“Of course I don’t care about P-princess Twilight! Just -hic!- because she’s got more wingfeathers than brain cells doesn't make her the -hic!- boss of me.”
With those words, war was declared in Moon Dancer’s mind. It’d been several months since her reunion with Twilight Sparkle, and she’d gone through a lot since they’d amended fences. The countless days in her room mourning their lost time had nearly broken her. Twilight’s past rejections of her plagued her dreams.
But Moon had come out the opposite end as a better mare; the shards of her past were glued back with friendship. It would not be the same as it was when Twilight left in that purple balloon for Ponyville. Perhaps that was the point, though; she and Twilight had agreed that the old way didn’t work. And the foundation they now stood on was not the same, but it was stronger for the four forehooves put to work repairing it.
That was possibly why she’d traded up to match Twilight’s glamor at this new Grand Galloping Gala; a ratty sweater for a black silk gown, a single-shoulder-strap number that clung to her frame. Well, more snugly than the knowledge that this was her mother’s prom dress at least.
Moon had protested at first, slightly irked at what questions it would draw. ”Mom, how is Twilight going to take me showing up in your dress at my first Gala visit?” she’d wailed.
“The same as she took you baring your soul to her!” she’d responded. And all she had then was a sweater, glasses and a hair tie. Now that she had time to prepare, she was going to this event dressed to the nines. And they’d promised an entourage to take her home, too.
“Plus; the friends Twily’s with? I’ve seen better help than ‘em in -hic!- in Fleur de Lis’ bedroom!”

Raven’s dark chestnut hair was knotted in a bun behind her head, though her glasses were in far better condition than Moon Dancer's. The red ruffles at the neckline of her dress were long enough to fall into the curves of her chest, something Moon Dancer did not spend time staring at on the trip to this castle.
However, Moon Dancer knowing this pony would only made her icy words prickle her coat all the harder because Raven Inkwell was apparently hammered. Since everypony else was either dancing in that filling ballroom or keeping their distance it seemed to fall on Moon Dancer to help stop this walking rabble-rouser. Had their friendship dwindled to this?
“Excuse me, Raven.”
“Inkwell, Moonpie…. “ A swaggering waver and Moon Dancer had proof of what had loosened and poisoned Raven's tongue - all 40-proof of it. Seriously, who’d snuck all this Berry Brew into the proceedings!? Even Moon Dancer could tell its aroma from a mile away. Even now, Moon Dancer could see DJ Pon-3 spinning tracks in the ballroom behind them. She gulped. Thes was going well, wasn’t it? “Look, when I asked you to be my plus one, you promised to stay away from the heavy stuff.”
“I did, Moondummy~” Raven’s sing-song tone was grating on Moon Dancer’s nerves with Dash-level speed. “My bowl was over there.” Her white hoof pointed at the jar all the way on the other side of the room, and to Moon Dancer’s surprise that was the same one most of the Guards were drinking from too.
“Somepony spiked it?!” Already Moon Dancer’s heart was treating her ribcage like a pinball machine. She mugged out the watch she'd brought with her to this party. Great. Three hours until the entourage came up and she could go home. Look, we have to warn the Princesses, Raven.”
“You warn the Princesses. I’m off the clock, Goodnight Moon.”
Could Raven’s insults at least start making sense? Fighting away the tic growing in her temple Moon Dancer tried diplomacy again. “Seriously, Raven, you’re tipsy now-”

And nearly went into a coughing fit over the alcohol as Raven purred into her face. “And I’ve never felt better. How could I be -hic!- when I’m the in-demand assistant, and you're… a pile of hoof-me-downs poured into a pony suit?”
“”S-so? They're not assistants to Princesses now, are they?” One tittering laugh later, and Raven had to re-brace her rear legs to keep her tail from tipping into the punch bowl. “Y’could be too if you weren’t such a stick in the… well, -hic!- Twilight-knows-where, you little suck-up.”
Moon Dancer’s anger started swirling in her stomach faster than that brew before her. Right now, Pinkie Pie had bounded to it and started adding - goodness, was that ignition powder? “I’m nothing like that, Raven.”
“Oooooh, a Debbie-Doubter. Let me prove it with three questions.” Raven cleared her throat. “Question: which of us needed daddy’s help to get into a ball? Question: Which of us needed Minuette’s help to be in a party that didn’t close out when the librarian Folio said ‘shhhh!’?”
“She told you that?” glowered Moon Dancer.
“Minnie told everypony that this morning.” Raven rolled her eyes. “Or was Twilight too busy burping you -hichichic!- then, too?”
Despite Moon Dancer’s mind reciting repeatedly that Raven was a rather loose-lipped drunk, despite her heart telling her not to pummel Inkwell for something even she’d regret later, the bookworm’s mind blanked out for a second. It was only after he left forehoof cocked back behind her that made her stop it from plunging it into Raven Inkwell’s jaw.
Well, that and Raven’s interruption. “Ah-ah-ah, Honey-Mooner. Hoof touches me, you spend the rest of the week with iron bars and bat Guards. Assistant’s rule number seven.”
Moon Dancer’s headache returned with a throbbing vengeance. Assistants were untouchable at the Gala?! What primped-up, shadow-scared dolt had gotten that rule past Celestia’s quill pen-
Her look flattened out into a flat shock at her epiphany. Of course, that dwarfish dragon had added that in. Speaking of Spikes, her blood pressure was about to hit the roof - if the poor sap who’d tasted Pinkie’s new brew didn’t first. Poor Blueblood, thought Moon Dancer.
“And -hic!- and not like Rarity is, either,” finished Raven. Moon Dancer turned where her hoof pointed now out of morbid curiosity. Within seconds, she nearly shrank back into her silk dress as she saw the blitzed fashionista rubbing flanks with two Night Guard mares on the bar. Their metal skirt-covered glutes swung with Rarity’s green-slip covered hips.
Above them all, Vinyl’s newest track pulsed into everyone’s ears, a chorus to the part’s slow slide into under-the-radar debauchery. Moon Dancer put some lyrics to that instrumental beat, though. “Eat me, Raven.”
“You wish, Dark of the Moon.” Raven’s purred. Try as she might, Moon couldn’t blame all of the heat that surged through her on the rage brimming behind her forced grin. “Couldn’t hold down a drink anyways, could you?“
Suddenly, Moon Dancer was grateful the Princess wouldn’t be coming down until the end of the Gala this time. Maybe Fluttershy would help this party with her poetry slam later. Of course, considering how she’d acted at the last party…
Moon Dancer snatched Raven’s glass from her hoof and downed it in one gulp. “No worries; not touching you. And pray to Luna I don’t find a way to tonight.” Strafing back into the clock as Raven looked wide-eyed at her Moon Dancer smirked. The drink burned at the back of her throat, yes, but it was a satisfying burn this time. The one that came with fighting fire with fire.
<~~One Soon-to-Be-Disappointing Hour Later~~~>
Where was Moon Dancer before Raven interrupted her? Oh yes, talking about limits.
Limiting as it was, Moon Dancer could learn from her mistakes in the right state of mind.
Limiting as it was, Moon Dancer saw her rocky road with Twilight as an incentive to be a better pony. At least, better than she was when those sharp stones were underhoof.
Limiting as it was, Moon Dancer was patient in getting what she wanted. It was a trait she didn’t know she had until she’d gotten that photo of herself, Twilight, and Minuette from their last party. It now rested in the observatory Twilight had given her now, much like she wanted to.
Apparently, that limit was something other ponies saw as a footstool.
Because just after vanishing into the crowd, Princess Luna came up to her and told her that she was the one who’d thrown Berry’s mix into every other drink bowl. Though, the fact that Luna had called her ‘Twilight’ may have been evidence that she had a couple pints of the stuff herself.
Then soon afterward, she’d been roped into helping Applejack and Big Mac control a drunk Minuette. This wasn’t an exaggeration; Applejack’s warrant lasso throw had snagged her too, nearly taking her through two tables before the farmpony had realized her error.
And of course, only a minute after Fluttershy’s first stuttered-out poem, back came Raven Jerkwad.
“Oh, pipe down -hic! Hic!- you bunch of vultures! Fluttershy worked hard to get that poem out!”
“I both resent and admire that!” Gilda snickered from the back.
“Right you are, Gilda; I do have a presentation you’ll all be inspired by!” Raven, after patting the grateful Fluttershy’s back as she left the stage, rose on her rear hooves. Aiming her front hoof at the throne of speakers and soundboards that DJ Pon-3 presided over. “Vinyl! Give oscillation to that defecation!”
“Did you mean ‘spin that shit’, Raaaaven?” purred out Sapphire Shores a seat away.
“Probably Like her music -hic!- dropped a chandelier back there, dear.” Rarity added, now stretching out on Sapphire’s lap as if she was Opal. Again, poor Blueblood, thought Moon Dancer, however solitary her sympathy for the haughty stallion was. Minuette would be able to get the glass out of his tuckus before noon tomorrow anyway.
However, Moon’s train of thought soon bucked the rails and flew into Ponyville General with the next works that fell from Inkwell’s pursed lips.
“Inkwell is back; so DJ, run that track;
I’m the biggest little mare in all of Canterlot’s pack!
‘Cause -hic!- I’m Celestia’s number one, and my body is kicking;
To the rest, your clock’s ticking; keep your loins from slick-”
The mic was spoon ripped from Raven’s hoof. Moon Dancer wasn’t the only one fed up with Raven’s antics, and not just because it was horrifyingly off-beat.”Raven Inkwell!” came the rumbling Canterlot Voice of Celestia. Moon swore she could hear a ‘Whoa, nelly…” come from Applejack’s general direction.
“We’ll be talking about this later, sister!” Celestia's hoof rested on the bridge of her snout. “As for you, Miss Inkwell, I apologize for Luna’s actions, but this does not excuse the problem you’ve made for us here.”
“Sorry for that, Princess - wait, problem? Did Princess Luna put you up to this?” Despite her words, Raven’s hooves clasped to get to try and beg off her punishment. “Because if she did, I'd like to ask her whether she thinks it’ll come close to hiding her batpony fetish!”
“That is a blatant over-exaggeration!” howled Luna, her dark cheeks turning red. “Of which I will be sure to have them correct in my bedchambers within the hour!”
“One, I did not need to know of this here, sister.” Celestia's smile couldn’t have looked more forced. “And two, Miss Inkwell, know I’m doing this for your own good; you’re relieved from assistantship duties for the rest of the day.”
“You're not an assistant right now? Do my ears deceive me?” Moon’s ears were so flared back that she’d probably be able to hear Chrysalis’ deceptions with them.
“What is it to you, Moon? Didn’t know you cared.”
“Oh I will after this. It’s just that I have an ask for you.” A sorcerous snap later, and Moon Dancer’s left hoof was brought up to Raven’s face. “Question: what’s on my hoof right now?”
Raven’s eyebrow quirked up. “A silver horseshoe, why?”
Moon Dancer’s grin as she cocked back that foreleg could’ve rivaled the moon outside in length.
<~~~ One Chaotic Gala Later ~~~>
“... and then you missed Inkwell entirely - which is just insane, she was two inches in front of you - so that horseshoe flew off and beaned Big Mac! Sent him right into the punch bowl! Speaking of, I gotta get Luna’s recipe, I think we’ll need Bulk to pry Mac from that door.”
“I know this, Dash, I was there. On Inkwell’s back when I was wailing on her, but I was there.” Indeed, Raven was facedown on one of the benches just behind the Canterlot hedge gardens, hooves running through her ruined brown mane. “So why are you reminding me of this?”
“That’s why I’m sending you outside to cool off instead of halfway across Canterlot! Think you’ve both done enough for tonight!” Now if you both don’t mind, I - and this -” With a swipe of her cyan forehoof, A.J’s Stetson hat was taken off Moon’s head, “-have to get back to my friend.”
Rainbow Dash muttered under her breath as she returned into the palace interior. “Don’t even know why A.J put this on you, you barely kept on Raven’s back for seven seconds...”
Well, Moon Dancer’s embarrassment was complete. At least Raven had not avoided her force-feeding of humble pie either. Stumbling over to her inebriated frenemy, Moon Dancer plopped herself on the other end of the bench. Her horn drew out a redirect for her entourage to pick them up later, visible only to them.
The second it was done, she turned back to the pained Inkwell. Her white dress had hilted up too with their fight, her cutie mark - a quill and ink bottle - peek out to the pale moonlight.
“Cold, Inkwell.”
“Warmer than your mother’s bed.” A more sober Moon Dancer - like the one inside her head - wished herself dead the moment that sentence left her lips.
“My mother is a fashion-conquering, rose-flanked saint!” Those words would’ve had more weight if Moon Dancer hadn’t rushed to catch Raven. “And she’ll always be happy with how good I am.” It was only her close proximity to Raven that let her hear her whisper, a traitorous confession from a dust-white snout. “Even if I’ve never been good enough to make Inky proud.”
And with that, this moment in the unforgiving evening took a wild turn. It was not because of the words Inkwell spat into the cobbled ground, but the tone of it. It was a dreadfully familiar tenor, one where work was clung to because bonds were too painful when they broke.
Moon Dancer knew of it, never more so than when she saw what rejecting those bonds did to the rejected. Despite herself, her mind played the reel of the time she’d seen how deep it’d struck at the heart of the Princess of Friendship herself.
Moon Dancer’s hooves slammed into the polished floor ofCanterlot Castle. Of course Twilight Sparkle would treat you by back her bail-out on her with keys and parties and knickknacks! Did she not care how much she’d hurt her?
Beyond the largest of the golden double doors, Moon Dancer paused. This led to the throne room, and the two diarchs of Equestria. A quick end to her torment awaited beyond that pearl filigree. If Moon stepped in and pleaded with Princess Celestia enough, she could get Twilight to back off. Maybe if she told Luna how often Twilight filled her every slumbering moment, she’d express to that arrogant alicorn how much it hurt being away from her so long.
That was what hurt most of all; Moon Dancer would never smell her perfume without knowing it’d waft away in the next breeze with her, for those Elements’ sake. Never touch those wings of Twilight, without it flexing and flapping to put her endless gulfs away. Never see her so close to her cream-colored face without being plagued by the lewd thought of pinning her down to drink in every taste from between her curiosity-frozen cu-

Moon Dancer’s face flushed. Dare she find out what got that phrase spoken? The voice behind it was somewhat familiar.
“I cannot do this, and you know why!” That was Princess Celestia speaking, and at the level of desperation present in her pitch made Moon crouch in fear.
“I’m giving it to you, Princess!” Seriously, Moon Dancer could point this out, why was the shrillness such a good shroud to its identity? “I can live without this! But it deserves a better holder than me, after how thoroughly I forgot what it was made to represent!”
She had to know. At this point, it sounded like a Canterlot-wide crisis might erupt in that room. As the bookworm cracked open the door, though, her eyes bugged out at the scene before her.
Twilight Sparkle was there. Her attention was wholly focused on Celestia, the only other pony in that spacious throne room. Twilight’s wings were flapping madly to keep her aloft. And despite Celestia being in too stiff a pose to accept anything, that young Princess was trying to give Celestia her glittering tiara.
“Being a Princess is not given and taken away on one small fault, Twilight.” Some semblance of control had returned to Celestia’s voice.
“There’s nothing small about this fault, Celestia! I ruined Moon Dancer’s life. The one time -One. Time!- she reached out to anypony, I booked it an entire city away. I never wrote back, never checked up… never cared, until Spike reminded me. Nopony this ignorant of true friendship should be the embodiment of it.”
Even from her position, Moon Dancer could see the twinkle of those tears falling from Twilight's cheeks as she thrust out her crown again. “And nopony as bad as I was at reconciling with their peers should be a Princess of anything.”
Moon Dancer watched this moment in silence. When Celestia spoke again, her tone was tense. “Twilight, my former student, that lesson is one you have no fault in learning just now.”
“How so, Princess? I… forgot one of my Canterlot friends for years on end!”
“And you figured it out within years. For some it takes… much longer.” For some reason unknown to Moon, Twilight fell silent, her hooves made loud claps as they landed on the ornate floor. Celestia continued nonetheless. “You know of that oversight now, and you have a chance to change it. Because for everypony, it’s never too late to try and fix a broken bond.”
Moon Dancer’s breath came in small clouds, but the five next words Celestia said after that fell like a hailstorm. “Even those broken over millennia.” Even she could grasp who Celestia spoke of now.
And almost as if summoned by the soothing words, Princess Luna strode out to the room behind the thrones to wave to her sister. “It is good to see you. Perhaps we can talk of the new developments today.”
“Of course, Luna. Right this way - I feel like a walk. Twilight, will you join…”
By that time, Moon Dancer was galloping away from that room as fast as possible. Her chest heaved and bobbed with every breath as she reached the library’s silver doors. She had to forget about all this. It was clearly an issue between alicorns, she’d been intruding.
“Oh, Moon Dancer! Back again so soon? Come on in, looks like you’ve seen a ghost!” Raven Inkwell had opened the door to the panting pony. Moon Dancer finally relaxed upon seeing her familiar face. “Folio’s just ahead; I’ll let her know you’re in before I’m due at Celestia’s side.”
Moon Dancer nodded dumbly. Yeah. Going into her true sanctum felt great right about now. Besides, it wasn’t like she was going to meet that life-meddling mare Twilight again. She’d apparently found her new best friends.
Thankfully, Moon Dancer had classes to catch the tear that fell from her cheek as she walked into the Royal Canterlot Library. And much like the alicorns, Raven never caught on to it either.
“I didn’t know you’d… done all you do for somepony too.” Moon Dancer felt she should have guessed, though. “Wait is it…”
“Yeah. Inky Rose.” Raven’s weary sigh made the bookworm shudder, helping Raven to a leaning position against the armrest of the bench. “We kept it secret; didn’t want either of our careers to be wholly credited to the other’s placement.” Raven’s shoulders sank further as she looked to the floor. “Course... that won’t matter when she hears of the mess I made today.”
It was all-too-reminiscent of Moon Dancer's plight for her to turn a blind eye to. All this acting out, how long had life been second-stringing Raven Inkwell along? Moon, herself a long-time resident of Canterlot, had only ever seen her serving a princess. Something she coveted ,but also resented. And how much had Raven thrown away to have it, if she was willing to spill the beans on it to a pony she’d said was just a wannabe?
Before Raven could flinch, Moon Dancer caught her in a hug. She’d had parents willing to hear out her every concern; to know of one that didn’t tore at her. To see just what part of Raven kept her distance from everyone besides a princess struck at her soul. “It’s okay, Raven.”
“Thank you, Moon. You’ve… been so understanding lately.” Raven’s shoulder shook, Moon’s shoulders grew damper with each tear dripping on it, but her grip didn’t break. Raven was left to pour her soul out on her friend’s collarbone. “You keep it all together until you need to strike. You’re so smart, and yet so precise. No matter what life throws at you… or pours in your drinks.”
For once, Moon Dancer didn’t have a response to Raven. She simply sat back and stroked at her fellow mare’s manae, finally trickling around her shoulders like her tears ran down her chin. It’d been… well, almost never since Raven had ever been this open, this raw to Moon Dancer.
Moon Dancer didn’t want to ruin it. So she let her silence serve as her response, and held Raven tight, and tried not to think about how warm this assistant felt against her heaving body.
And also where that thought had come from.
Eventually, enough time passed that Moon Dancer had to crane back to see the moonlight twinkle in Moon Dancer’s face. Wasn't easy thigh south the stinging stiffness buzzing through ehr limbs, from both their position and the cold.
“Oh! Curse it all, Moon, I should’ve been more considerate. The life rushed back into Raven’s voice as she massaged at Moon Dancer’s fore-legs immediately. Warm, luxurious vigor surged back into the spectacled mare’s body weight each pass of Raven’s hooves. Soon, her breaths came heavy.
“R-raven?” But the assistant was too engrossed in her work to notice at first. Moon Dancer clopping her hooves together made her double back though. “Don’t worry. You did…. Good now.”
“I-I did?” Goodness, Raven almost sounded like a tentative little tyke now, and Moon Dancer almost giggled at the cuteness. It seemed the uptight Raven was full of surprises this Grand Galloping night. “Well, great. Wouldn’t want to see a mare as strong as you lose those limbs to nature's breath.”
“Don’t think we have to worry about that,” breathed Moon Dancer, her cheeks lighting up at the complement to her strength that Raven paid her. Just how much did that alcohol bring out of her? “And I… really hope you’ve got a way back home.”
Raven giggle-snorted lightly. “Inky’ll be here in a jiffy.” Then her gaze lowered down Moon Dancer’s body. “But… I did say I was sorry for what I did before. I think we’ve the time to make it up.”
This time, Moon Dancer couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled from her throat like cider. If that line were any cornier, it’d be in a Sweet Apple Acres trough.“
Then the laughter faded as Moon Dancer noticed Raven’s posture. She was looking at the floor, the smile fading but still present, her hooves sliding over each either in anticipation or angst.
“I’m sorry.” Goodness, that couple of words almost flew out of Moon Dancer’s lips. “I didn’t think you were seriou-”
Raven adjusted herself so she could stare right into her friend’s eyes. And at that point, the night’s complexion took a sharp turn, as Moon Dancer felt her heart jackhammer at the Yakyakistan-melting lust burning in Inkwell’s eyes. Moon Dancer could feel her breath catch in her throat as Raven trailed a hoof down it.
“R-raven what are you-”
“No, Moon. You’re right.” Raven’s voice was husky, low, almost desperate. “I fucked up. I fucked you over. Now would should be able to return the favor.“ She inched further into Moon Dancer’s orbit, her breath pricking the at Moon Dancer’s coat, blackberries and something sweeter making her ears perk up.
“Miss Inkwell..” panted Moon Dancer. Again, the words just wouldn’t well up for her in this hybrid moment, desperate to say another thing before Ravens’ sin-dripping voice burned away her last dregs of restraint.
But Raven was faster this time. “By Celestia, you’re beautiful.” And her lips softly touched Moon Dancer’s. It was barely a kiss, but neither pony pulled away. Both their eyes dilated, the intimate position meaning then draw closer.
Raven’s hooves soon moved upward, tugging away the band keeping Moon Dancer’s mane up. Soft red-and-purple locks fanned out of her temple, and Raven whistled at how Moon looked with her hair down. For a moment, it did feel like Twilight Sparkle had returned from her spot, calming down the chaos she’d turned the Gala into. And her brimming blue eyes stared at Raven with a grace she felt she didn’t deserve.
On Moon Dancer’s part, relief shot through her, just glad that Raven had stopped browbeating her. Was this how far a little bit of friendship went? She thought. Indeed, for years, it had felt like the rage and anger within Moon would never end. But now it seemed like Raven was going through that same mental metamorphosis.
Her horn glowed, and with a snap, Raven was without their trademark glasses. Even with her vision turning hazy, her cropped locks and creamy complexion of her love was crystal clear. Moon Dancer felt powerful, and accomplished, and… hot.
And thanks to her stillness, Moon Dancer could appreciate Raven’s body, like she had her mellowed mind. Her dress curved in the same hourglass figure, with its lower end. And sparkling sap speed from her thighs staining the bench below.
They were hot; amazingly so. Her half-lidded eyes stopped at the edge of her curtain of red-purple mane, Raven’s accessory-free snout crinkling as she licked her plush lips.
