Twilight was struck by the ambiance as she stepped into the conference room. The faint smell of lilac that came from the gently glowing flower buds that grew on the thick vine walls which bathed the room in an evening glow that gave the room the feeling of a mild and peaceful night. A sensation made all the more prominent by the open canopy which offered an unrestricted view into the vast darkness of space.

Despite the natural feel to everything, it was clear that the details were deliberate, trying to set a calming atmosphere where discussions could happen more comfortably.

Never ignore the details, Twilight remembered Seto telling her during one of their conversations, small, silent signals set the tone you'll be working with.

She walked around the meeting room, the sound of her hooves quieted by the natural walls. In the center of the room was a large wooden table that was even now being set with pitchers of water and glasses for the attendees. The table itself appeared unadorned, however the intricate wood grain entwined itself into a distinct pattern.

Twilight wondered briefly if there was some book she could read that would explain how the effect was achieved before she reminded herself what she was doing here. The weight on her back for the future of a government now forming. The fear of what may happen if she messed anything up.

Somepony's lying to you. Celestia doesn't trust you anymore. What did you ever do to earn this position? These thoughts joined others that buzzed around Twilight's mind as the realization of what was coming began to sink in.

“Is the room to your liking Twilight?” Seto's voice was as calm and steady as ever as she spoke. Her abrupt appearance making Twilight's heart leap.

Before considering the question Twilight thought on Seto's demeanor, always calm and collected. Inwardly she wondered if she'd ever be able to have that much control over herself. “It's beautiful and … calming.” Twilight answered as her mind once more began to focus on the implications of what she needed to accomplish.

Seto nodded, almost in approval. “Peace, in it's many forms, is never created by accident.” She said, her eyes drifting over the flowers and table.

“I'm glad James had this room available for us.” Twilight said, following Seto's gaze.

“He does enjoy conducting negotiations in a relaxed atmosphere.” Seto noted as she turned once more to Twilight. “What do you think?”

Twilight pondered a moment, taking Seto's comment into consideration. “I think it's just what we need.” She answered, “The Shisan Republic is formed of former pirates, and with the pirate problems in this area specifically I think tensions are going to be high enough already.”

Seto's face changed, almost imperceptibly, but Twilight was certain she saw the approval Seto's nod hinted at earlier.

“That is certainly true. As the Shisan Pirate Guild, they not only engaged in the normal petty theft of pirates, but carried out raids of planets leaving many dead as they escaped with important treasures. Many of great historical value.”

Twilight's stomach turned as she considered the scale of suffering that the Shisan had in their wake. She'd worked to make peace with yaks and dragons, but that was before anything had happened to cause suffering. This … it was beyond anything she'd had to consider before. “I … hadn't thought about that.” She admitted, remembering once more that what she knew as pirates were nothing like the ones Seto knew.

“Does that change how you plan to proceed?”

Twilight wanted to offer a quick “no” as an answer, but could she in light of the suffering the Shisan republic had caused? What about the demands the delegates might have? Could she keep things moving towards peace if they wanted vengeance? And would they be so wrong to demand it?

“While they cannot be charged with any crimes due to the statute of limitations, I would expect many delegates will have stipulations. How would you address those who might seek compensation, or even retribution?” Seto asked, her voice calm yet pressing.

Twilight fought to not hyper ventilate as the prospect of being the only safeguard against an interplanetary war.

“Remember, Twilight,” Seto continued, her gaze steady, “Jurai is committed to maintaining order, but we do have our own interests, and you must be ready to navigate that too.”

Twilight remained silent, feeling as though the ground were shifting beneath her.

“I'll leave you to prepare.” Seto said as she calmly turned and walked from the room.

Twilight stood silently by the window, gazing out into the infinite blackness of space. The unfamiliar glow of Hinako's lights contrasting the dark view that Twilight now stared into. Lost in her thoughts as she was, she didn't register Starlight walking in.

“Uh-oh.” Starlight's voice broke the silence, and Twilight turned to see her friend regarding her with a sympathetic smile. “Window staring already.”

Twilight's wings drooped and she shook her head. “What am I supposed to do?” she muttered, turning back to the abyss outside. “I'm not ready for intergalactic peace talks. I wasn't even ready to rule Equestria …” She let out a short bitter laugh, “and that's not even a pin on the map to these civilizations!”

Starlight's expression softened as she walked up to Twilight, finally thinking about the scale of what was being asked of her and appreciating the enormity of it. “Yeah, that's a lot,” she admitted, gently placing a hoof on Twilight's back. “But maybe don't think of it all at once. Just focus on what's in front of you.”

Twilight raised an eyebrow and deadpanned, “The infinite expanse of space?”

“Not literally, Twilight.” Starlight chuckled as she nudged Twilight, “Maybe just … focus on the creatures in the room with you. They're the one's you're dealing with, not their entire … uh, space empires.”

Twilight pulled her eyes away from the window. The worry etched on her face was unmistakable, “If it were just that, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.” Her head dropped as she spoke, her voice low. “But it's more than that Starlight. So much more.”

Starlight took a moment to examine Twilight's expression, “How bad is it?”

“Back when they were pirates they … hurt so many.” Twilight's gaze dropped, her voice tinged with sorrow. “And now I'm supposed to ask the people they hurt to just forgive them? What if they don't listen? What if they want revenge? And … what about me? I'm here helping the ones who caused all that suffering …”

Starlight looked down, as she considered Twilight's words, searching for something she could say that would help. Eventually she looked up, meeting Twilight's eyes. “How would you convince them to give me a chance?”

Twilight looked at her confused. “But you're nothing like them?”

Starlight took a steadying breath, “I hurt ponies. Remember? I was messing around with time and practically destroyed Equestria over and over … until you stopped me.” A slight smile spread on her face as she continued. “But somehow, you still forgave me. You gave me a chance.”

Twilight's face softened as she remembered that day. “But you weren't anywhere near as bad as them. And once you knew what was at stake, you genuinely wanted to be better.”

Starlight smirked as she tilted her head. “Isn't that what they're doing now? They know what's at stake, and they're currently trying to change. So why not give them the same chance you game me?”

Twilight's shoulders relaxed as she considered what Starlight had said. “You're right, Starlight. They are trying to be better, even if it means making amends with those that they hurt.” She took a couple deep breaths as she began to calm down. “And that all I can do is deal with what's in front of me.” She paused a moment longer before reaching out and hugging Starlight. “Thank you.” She quietly said.

“What are friends for.” Starlight said, returning the hug.

With a sigh Twilight stood up and began walking out of the room. “I should probably get ready.”

“Hey.” Starlight said as Twilight went to leave. “We all believe in you.”

Twilight found herself once more in the conference room, and though the dimmer lighting earlier had set a calming atmosphere, the brighter lighting that now illuminated the room was a welcome change. She smiled as she once more examined the conference room. The relief was short lived, though, as she looked to the seating assignments.

She hadn't arranged the seating on a whim, and had spent hours considering what the seating might say about what her own position is. Now the Shisan delegate was sitting directly to her left – clearly marking her not as a neutral party, but closely tied to them. And the seat they were now assigned had been James' seat as she hoped to get his help during the talks.

Her wings twitched as she ran from space to space, seeing who was now sat where and trying desperately to understand why everything had changed. “Hinkao!” she called, desperation obvious in her voice.

Before Twilight, Hinako's avatar appeared in her familiar holographic screen. “Is everything alright?” The text beneath the motherly figure asked, her face emoting the question as clearly as the words.

“What happened to the seating arrangements? I had everything set up just right!” Twilight's eyes darted around, trying to make sense of why they would be rearranged in the placing they now had.

Hinako's image closed her eyes and looked down, her brown hair framing the sympathetic look she wore. “It was Lady Seto Kamiki Jurai's decision.” The text beneath her read. “She mentioned that it would better assist in dialog.”

“Really, she said that?” Twilight asked, her tone shifting suddenly hopeful.

The avatar's face changed to a slightly embarrassed expression as it turned to look up at Twilight. “Not exactly …” Hinako clearly hesitated as she scratched her cheek and deliberately looked away. The text remained for a few moments before changing once more. “Her exact words were: “This should be fun.””

Twilight's jaw fell slack as she read the quote, horrified at the casual way Seto had chosen to change her arrangements. Desperate to understand, Twilight looked over the seating once more hoping to find some kind of advantage that this could give her. Something that Seto had seen that she hadn't.

She's been doing this for millenia, of course she'd know something about this that I don't. Twilight reasoned as she tried to imagine how she was going to handle the meeting.

But I had a plan on how I was going to do this! I had everything set up perfectly. Twilight thought, her eyes bouncing between every seat, going over who she was going to talk to in order, now it felt completely random.

Twilight turned, ready to ask when the delegates were expected to arrive, only to see Hinako's disappointed face as she silently pointed up.

Following the direction given, Twilight watched as several spaceships seemingly appeared overhead. The delegates had arrived, and like it or not she had to work with what she had.

The realization brought with it a crushing stress, but despite her racing heart Twilight squared herself and took a breath. Quietly, she whispered to herself what Seto had told her earlier. “Peace, in it's many forms, is never created by accident.”

“Thank you Hinako.” Twilight said with a nod, readying herself to greet the delegates as they arrived.

She didn't have to wait long, as through the doorway a tall bearded man dressed in what appeared to be a military dress uniform walked in.

Despite his meticulously groomed appearance, he looked uncomfortable. His eyes darted around, as if trying to find an escape if it were necessary. Once his gaze landed on Twilight he turned abruptly and strode towards her.

“Princess Twilight,” He said, bowing slightly as he stopped in front of her. “On behalf of the Shisan Republic, I thank you for your part in the upcoming proceedings.” His tone was quick, as he had clearly practiced this several times.

Twilight cleared her throat and smiled. “I'm glad you could be here.” She said, holding out her hoof as if to shake his hand.

Twilight couldn't help but notice the delegate's hesitation as he hesitantly took her hoof. He relaxed significantly as she initiated the familiar shake. Well, at least we've got some familiar ground to work with, she thought with a small measure of relief that quickly faded as the other delegates filed into the room.

The Wau delegate's tail flicked, clearly showing the irritation he barely hid behind his practiced facade.

“Well if nothing else these talks will be interesting.” His sharp lion-like features serving to enhance the already imposing figure he cut.

Twilight's wings twitched as she sensed the underlying tension brewing with the pointed comment.

“Please, even if nothing is accomplished these talks will prove insightful.” A human woman dressed in a Galaxy Police dress uniform commented, her voice laced with disdain. She looked as though she were evaluating everything in the room, and was ready to offer a unique complaint on all of it.

The Wau's ears twitched at the comment, turning his focus from the former pirate to the officer. “That's rich coming from the GP, who allowed the statute of limitations to run out on the pirate guild.”

Twilight's heart raced. This isn't just formality; everything they're saying is weighted.

“Their guild been quiet for a couple centuries.” The officer answered, the edge of her voice matching that of the Wau's. “To be frank, there were more pressing matters.”

How am I supposed to get them to be okay with the Shisan when they're already having trouble getting along with each other. “H- hello.” Twilight said, struggling to keep her voice steady as she tried to not think about the sheer number of people these delegates represented. “It's a pleasure to meet you.” She offered with a slight bow of her own.

The Wau returned the gesture, his stone face unchanged as he offered her a short, but easy “Thank you.”

“It is good to be here.” The GP officer responded with a nod.

One by one delegates entered, each taking their reserved seat at the table. In all twelve delegates were in attendance, including Twilight and James.

“I just want to make one thing clear before we begin.” Said a short, beady-eyed woman, her high, clipped tone aimed directly at the Shisan delegate. “While we all hope for peace, we cannot simply ignore the past. The people each of us represent have lost something precious – be it money, history, or more devastatingly – friends and families.”

Twilight's heart sank. The enormity of her task, and the fresh reminder of the pain these people carried made the air feel heavy.

“I do hope you'll act in good faith, as I've always known you to do Shizune.” A young-looking woman with waist-length violet hair said softly, dressed in a flowing kimono of white and soft pink. “Jurai will not allow these talks to devolve into open warfare.”

Twilight's eye's widened as Shizune's face flickered with a brief flash of unease. She quickly collected herself, but even that split-second reaction spoke volumes. Around the table, Twilight caught the murmurs and sharp glances, a ripple of tension at the possibility of Jurai's intervention.

Almost subconsciously, Twilight's eyes drifted to the stars outside. Could the presence of just two Juraian ships really be enough to keep so many others in check? The thought left her both relieved and wary.

“So …” Twilight uncomfortably said, a wide awkward smile spreading across her face. “I know we're all familiar with why we're here, but maybe we should introduce ourselves.”

The Wau delegate huffed briefly, directing a cold glare to Twilight. “We're all aware of who we sit with today, introductions are hardly necessary.”

Twilight froze momentarily under his gaze. Quietly she swallowed the lump forming as she cleared her throat. “I know part of the preparation was reading about who we'd be dealing with, but names and profiles aren't individuals. And while many of you have probably seen each quite a lot, I can think of two individuals here who may not know everyone already.” She offered, successfully keeping her voice still. “I'll start: I'm Princess Twilight Sparkle. I was officially asked to mediate by Lady Seto Kamiki Jurai.”

A delegate dressed in a gold-trimmed white suit openly sighed as he listened to Twilight. Just as he began to open his mouth, the Juraian delegate cut him off, standing as she did.

“I believe that would be a good idea. We have the Shisan delegate at enough of a disadvantage.” She said with a smile as she looked over the attendants. “I am Eika Tatsuki, representative of Jurai. And I appreciate Lady Seto finding a non affiliated mediator to assist in these talks.”

James smirked as he watched, casually standing once Eika had taken her seat once more. “Far be it from me to refuse that invitation. James Glastos, New Guardia.” He said as easily as he stood, and after a brief nod he once more sat and watched the remaining delegates.

“Elhest De'tas.” The Wau said curtly, not standing as the two before him had. “Of the United Planets of Ratik.”

The man in the white and gold suit stood, bowing slightly towards the Juraian delegate. “Markus Anders, representing Ferash.” He said, his voice quiet but firm.

Not even waiting for Markus to sit, Shizune stood, “Shizune Daigiin, I'm here for the people of Melmas. And I too appreciate a neutral mediator.” As Shizune sat back in her seat she appeared more at ease.

One by one the remaining delegates introduced themselves, until finally: “And I am Henrik Soder, of the Shisan Republic.” The Shisan delegate said, glancing quickly around the room at each of the other delegates.

Twilight couldn't help but hear the brief waver in his voice, realizing that if she noticed: so did everyone else. And that would likely embolden them to make heavier demands and concessions. Once again Twilight thought back to her diplomatic relations with the Yaks, wishing desperately that it could all be smoothed over by one of Pinkie Pie's parties.

“If it's all the same to you,” Elhest said with less of an edge to his tone, “I'd prefer if we got into the actual talks now.”

“Of course.” Twilight answered without thinking, only to realize her mistake when Elhest grinned.

Just as he was about to speak again Twilight spoke up, “Henrik, please tell us just what it is you're hoping to achieve here.” In the corner of her eye she caught a hint of a smile tugging at James' mouth.

“The goal of the Shisan republic is peace. We've broken away from the pirate guilds and wish to provide safety for our people. That would be easier with the cooperation of the other governments.”

“As many of our own people wished!” Elhest snapped, “but your guild saw fit attack and rob us! Irreplaceable cultural treasures plundered in your raids! And now that you can no longer be charged with their theft you come asking to be treated as though you are not pirates?”

“And what of that territory you claim as your own? No small portion was once part of Melmas.” Shizune added, not giving Henrik the opportunity to answer.

“And that our governments should commit forces to your aid against the other pirates guilds?” Markus added before Shizune had even finished. It wasn't long until nearly all of the other delegates were loudly competing with each other simply to shout their frustrations.

Twilight closed her eyes, not blocking the commotion out, but rather trying to calm herself. She couldn't even think with the commotion and the stress that it had only been minutes and already nearly everyone was shouting at each other.

In moments this group of near strangers had devolved to fighting she would have expected from the Hooffields and McColts who had been fighting for generations
Twilight grit her teeth as a gold flecked violet luminescence surrounded her horn. Then with a flash of light Twilight shouted, “Quiet!” An ambient violet aura with feint golden flakes filled the room as Twilight looked between each of the delegates.

The eyes of the delegates darted around, all of their other features frozen as Twilight held the spell in place. There was a weight to the light, pressing in gently but firmly and keeping everyone motionless and silent. And in the now silent room Twilight began to speak. “I know you are all upset, and that you all have good reason to be so. But we accomplish nothing by shouting over each other and not even taking the time to listen. We're here to talk and come to an understanding, and we can't do that if we can't even hear each other!”

The violet light soon faded as Twilight released the spell, and the room remained silent as the delegates tried to understand what had just happened.

James was the first to speak, “Perhaps a fifteen minute break to cool our heads? Then we can come back and discuss things more respectfully.”

“I second that.” Eika added, “Twilight?”

As they spoke Twilight had closed her eyes tightly, silently ridiculing herself for forcefully silencing everyone. Still keeping her eyes closed she nodded, “Fifteen minutes should work.”

Twilight heard the murmuring as each of the delegates left, and while she couldn't make out individual words, the tone was more than enough to tell her that she had screwed up big time. Jumping down from her chair, Twilight went to stare out into space once more. She needed to think if she even could save these talks, or if she should ask Seto to find someone else. Clearly she wasn't up to the task.

“Not a bad start.” James casually said, catching Twilight's attention.

“Given the tension in the room, I'd say you kept things quite peaceful.” Eika added before Twilight turned to see the two standing behind her.

“Yeah, now I just need to keep everycreature magically paralyzed and the talks can go swimmingly.” Twilight said sarcastically.

“Twilight, Elhest was trying to take control of the talks away from you, and you showed him twice that he's not going to be able to do that.” Eika explained as she knelt and placed a hand on Twilight's shoulder. “You're keeping things directed toward peace when some of the others would prefer taking the Shisan's territory by force and carving it up between them. The region is stable for now, but a territory grab like that would jeopardize security for the surrounding sectors as they try to defend their acquisition from pirates interested in expanding, and the Shisan now in their borders who wouldn't be happy about just being taken over.”

Twilight groaned in response, not ready to think of this as a positive outcome. I lost my temper, and somehow that's a good thing? Yeah right. They're just trying to make me feel better. Though why would Eika try? I know why James would, but her?

James had heard that groan before and knew that Twilight didn't believe them. “Twilight, they have a martial art specifically for debates. With you here we may get through this without anyone even getting the chance to use it.”

Twilight glared at James, unconvinced.

“It's going to take a while,” James said calmly, kneeling to look Twilight in the eye, “but I promise you things are going in the right direction.”

“While we've got these fifteen minutes,” Eiko said, standing alongside James, “let's let Twilight think about what comes next.”

“That alright with you, Twilight?” James asked.

Twilight silently nodded, returning to her window gazing as she reminded herself that she was here at the request of Lady Seto. With only the gentle glow of the lights and the peaceful silence for company, she asked herself what Seto could have possibly seen to put so much faith in her to accomplish these peace talks.

Twilight shook her head. Whether or not she felt she could handle it, it was her responsibility and she would do everything in her power to ensure peace.

It had been closer to twenty minutes when the delegates had all returned, while not silent the room was still quiet.

“How can she ask us to listen to this pirate and not even hear our grievances?” Elhest muttered to the GP officer he had complained about earlier.

Whispers in a similar vein could be heard in the quiet before Twilight was ready to start the talks once more. “Henrik,” Twilight said with a forced calm, “Was there anything else you wished to say, or can we move on to what the others want?”

Henrik nodded appreciatively, he was more composed now as he spoke, knowing that Twilight would and could keep the peace in the room. “I know that peace is hard fought and even more difficult to achieve when the animosity is justified. And to show that we are serious, the Shisan republic is ready to return the historical relics that we stole and still have in our possession. Verified for authenticity by Jurai, and delivered by New Guardia.”

Once more murmurs began, and much to Twilight's relief they didn't entirely sound angry. As she looked around, she could see that the delegates were paying more attention to what was being said instead of their own list of complaints.

Somehow she had managed to do the right thing, and quietly thanked James and Eika in her mind. Maybe she could do this after all, showing Seto – and herself – that she was ready for the responsibility.

“Not the usual delivery for New Guardia,” James said, his voice only hinting at optimism as he spoke. “But for the cause of peace, we're certainly willing to do this? How about you Ms. Tatsuki?”

“It will take time, but Jurai can and will identify each artifact and ensure it's authenticity.” Eika said in the calm pleasant tone that seemed to come so naturally to Juraians.

I guess that sometimes the right thing to do isn't always the nice, or even respectful, thing. Sometimes you just have to put your hoof down and make somepony listen.

***

Twilight sighed as she walked down the corridor towards her room, allowing the vine covered wood to take her away from the meeting that she just left. The quiet hum of power being a subtle reminder to where she actually was.

As the door slid open she was pulled suddenly from the comforting calm she had in her mind by a blast of confetti and a shout of “Surprise!” from her friends.

“Congratulations, Twilight!” Pinkie excitedly said, shoving a party hat on Twilight's head.

Pinkie pie had clearly worked hard decorating the party, there were streamers that matched Twilight's mane hanging about the room alongside paper lanterns that had been painted to look like planets, with a particularly large one painted with Twilight's cutie mark in the center. The small coffee table had been loaded with trays of cupcakes frosted with dark blue glittery frosting and a large bowel of punch, and music played just loud enough to enjoy but not drown out anything someone might say.

Even with as difficult as the day had been, seeing her friends gathered together gave Twilight a comfortable and familiar feeling.

“Yeah, I bet you showed them how things work in Equestria.” Rainbow Dash said as she hovered in the air, her hooves folded across her chest.

“Is everything alright, darling?” Rarity asked, having noticed that Twilight wasn't smiling.

Twilight managed a strained smile, looking to her friends. “We're only just starting.”

“Twilight,” Applejack said, concerned as she walked to her friend, “you were in there talking to them for twelve hours. How is it you're only just starting?”

Twilight sighed, dropping her head slightly as she recalled the day. “We spent all day just talking about what everyone wanted, and their grievances. And there are a lot. The only one making concessions today was Henrik.”

“Henrik?” Applejack asked, tilting her head slightly.

“He's the Shisan delegate.”

“What are they demanding?” Starlight asked as she took a sip from a cup of punch.

“They're demanding that the Shisan leaders and ranking officers surrender themselves to stand trial on their planets. Which we can't do for several reasons, not the least of which being that would leave the area defenseless where other pirate guilds could take over. But I have reason to think that they'd be more at risk of being taken over by some of the factions sitting at the table.” Twilight took a breath, as she quietly ran over the warning that Eika had given her during their first break.

“Woah. So it didn't go well, then?” Rainbow Dash asked, gently landing as she heard the news.

“Actually, supposedly it did go well. It was rough at first, but I think they're starting to listen now.”

“Ooh!” Pinkie excitedly said, bouncing as an idea coursed through her mind. “Then instead of a “Congratulations on a successful peace conference” party, this can be a “Congratulations on a good start” party!”

Twilight chuckled at Pinkie's boundless optimism, which was exactly the thing she needed right now. “I'll drink to that.” Twilight said, a filled cup of punch floating over from the table, held up by her gold flecked magic.

***

Okay, Twilight thought to herself, They spent all day yesterday talking about grievances, that may continue for a while today, but we need to keep things moving forward.

Twilight once again was in the conference room, inspecting everything with the hope that her effort would lead to a swifter resolution. She did briefly consider moving the seating to where she had wanted it before, but as she recalled the previous day it was clear that the delegates were at ease with who they were sat beside.

I need to keep an eye on Elhest. I think he's probably the most determined to undermine these talks. She considered as she placed a pair of small baskets containing breads and a larger basket of fruits at the center of the table.

“That's nice.” James said as he entered the room, his morning mug of coffee still steaming.

“Oh, good morning. I thought that maybe we could have something here so I can be sure hunger won't be an excuse for everycreature being irritable.” Twilight explained, setting out small plates for the simple fare.

James sipped his coffee and smiled, “Not a bad idea. I think I might just make a little contribution of my own. Something to really get their attention.” James' smile widened as he considered his idea.

“Oh, what?” Twilight asked, eager to hear what had put James in such a good mood.

“Just some Zap Apple Jam.” He casually answered. “A little taste they might never enjoy otherwise.”

“Oh, yeah, I think it would be nice to let them try something from Equestria.” While she did like the jam, she wasn't sure why James seemed so happy about the idea. “Are you planning something with it?”

James took another swig of his coffee and nodded. “Well, it's a bit of a power play. Since Applejack's family are the only ones who make it – and I control the flow of it outside Equestria – it's become a luxury item that only heads of state and the ludicrously wealthy enjoy out here. Just one jar of it on the table for everyone to enjoy should be enough to make them more manageable.”

Twilight cocked her eyebrow as she considered what James was saying, curious as to just how a five bit bottle of jam could really make them more manageable. Then again, she considered, he does know more about these talks than I do. And besides, if he's wrong there's just some jam for everycreature.

“It would worth breaking my rule about it just to get Elhest to stop his posturing for minute.” James added with a chuckle.

Twilight couldn't help but give a smirk at the absurdity of the comment as she looked to James who was hiding his own smirk behind his mug. With a nod she began to walk to the door where James stood. “That would make things a bit easier for me.”

“Maybe some sticky toffee to glue his mouth shut then?” James joked, “I'm certain Pinkie either has or could make some.”

Twilight chuckled at the suggestion, and the mental image of the overly stern delegate trying to speak with a mouth-full of candy. “Let's see if the jam works, and consider the toffee later.”

Twilight stood in the doorway a moment longer as James began to walk off. The talks were set to start again soon, and with a sudden pang of hunger Twilight realized that she had neglected breakfast herself. With a quick glance back to the conference room as she went to finish getting herself ready, she allowed herself to feel prepared. Yesterday's tension still lingered, especially with Elhest, but today, she planned to keep things moving on her trajectory.

Much to Twilight's surprise, once James informed the delegates that it was Zap Apple Jam that they were eating, they did in fact become noticeably less argumentative. And in the calm of the room Twilight was able to more clearly see how the delegates aligned with each other. Elhest clearly had the military might to throw around, with his aggressive stance, while Markus had diplomatic pull as he was more soft spoken, asking open ended questions to adjust his responses to their answers. Shizune seemed to have some power over several delegates as they deferred to her at times, and while not openly confrontational they often talked guarded around each other.

It was obvious who would be a problem if the Shisan were left defenseless.

As the talks continued into the afternoon they eventually finished addressing grievances, which felt more and more like accusing Henrik of every crime his government had ever committed and then some.

Twilight sighed as she realized that it was finally all in the open. “Now the question is:” Twilight began, looking around the delegates. “What can we do about this?”

“Isn't it obvious?!” Elhest snarled, the lion-like growl of his voice sending a chill down Twilight's spine.

“I know what's been suggested, and it's not a practical solution.”

“And how is that?” Markus calmly asked, raising an eyebrow as he did.

“Yes, it sounds reasonable to me.” Shizune said, clearly irritated at the dismissal of the suggestion.

“You're suggesting locking up the entire Shisan Government and all it's military leaders!” Henrik growled, raising from his seat and slamming his palms on the table.

“It's crime and punishment. Simple as that.” Markus said, scowling at Henrik. “And I know it's not a skill pirates such as yourself excel in, but please control yourself.”

“I believe even that may be asking too much.” Shizune quipped, giving a self-satisfied grin as she did.

“Honestly he's right to be upset at the suggestion.” Twilight said, her voice still among the increasingly frustrated group. “In several ways. You're talking about crippling their government and their military when they're just seeking peace! And with their territory as it stands …”

“Territory that they stole!” Shizune cut in, drawing a exasperated sigh from Twilight.

“With their territory as it stands …” Twilight repeated, sternly, “is virtually surrounded by pirate guilds that won't be too pleased with them breaking away.” Twilight took a moment to look between Elhest and Shizune. “Something that I expect you notice will make them a tempting target to anycreature looking to expand their own territory.”

“Crimes have been committed, and the injured deserve justice!” Elhest said, attempting to cover his condescension.

“Let's talk about laws then.” Eika said before anyone else could talk. “The agreement that establishes the laws that would have once allowed you to prosecute the leaders you are so desperate to get a hold of also establish a distinct frame of time that those laws can be enforced.” Eika tapped in the air as a holographic monitor appeared in front of her, automatically scrolling through text as she searched. “And as we are past that deadline, attempting to extradite them would be a miscarriage of the justice you insist on holding them to.”

“By barely a few days.” Elhest snapped.

“Are the laws so easily ignored when they're inconvenient?” Markus asked, remaining calm. “I'll not deny that my own government and people are calling for the Shisan republic be made to answer for their past piracy. But to flout the law would make us no better than the pirates we wish to see put behind bars.”

Elhest glared at Markus and leaned back in his chair.

“There are always exceptions to be made.” Shizune commented, calmly.

Twilight nodded at the comment, drawing intrigued looks from several delegates. “Of course there are always exceptions to be made. But those exceptions should be in favor of peace and friendship, not punishing people because you're angry. If you start finding exceptions to hurt others, that's all you'll ever find.”

Once more Twilight found herself standing outside her door, trying to be almost anywhere else in her mind as the events of the day repeated in her head. There was no party waiting for her this day, which she considered with both relief and a pang of disappointment.

She didn't feel like partying, but if anything would take her mind off the day she just had it would be a Pinkie Pie Party with her friends.

“Hi Twilight.” Fluttershy's gentle voice brought Twilight's attention back to the hallway. “How did everything go today?”

Twilight sighed as she gestured for Fluttershy to follow her in. “Better … I think. I mean, we're past everycreature just dumping all of their frustrations on Henrik, so that's good. It just …” Twilight admitted after a pause, her tone heavy, “It just feels like I'm trying to hold back a war – and not even the one I thought I'd be dealing with.”

Fluttershy's eyes widened. “Oh my.” she whispered, gently placing her wing of Twilight's back. “You just sit down and I'll make some tea. You don't have to say anything you don't want to, but I'll listen if it helps.”

Twilight settled into a chair, watching as Fluttershy calmly prepared the tea. When she returned Twilight let the chamomile and lemon steam relax her before speaking again.

“The thing is it's almost like they want to fight, and … well, I think they really might.” Twilight took a sip of the tea Fluttershy had placed in front of her, letting the warmth and flavor spread as she thought. “It's just that if the Shisan were to give the other governments what was asked of them, there's no way they could defend themselves.”

Fluttershy nodded as she listened, her concerned expression showing that she understood so far.

Twilight briefly thought back to what Eika had said the day before, understanding the warning for what it was. “And I now I'm sure that it's not the pirates they have to worry about.”

“What?” Fluttershy gasped.

“Some of the delegates aren't looking for peace, but for an opportunity to expand their borders.” Twilight explained.

Fluttershy looked shocked and saddened as she thought about what Twilight had said. “They wouldn't really do that, would they?”

“Not all of them …” Twilight quietly answered, downcast as Fluttershy refilled their cups, “but I can think of two or three who I'm sure would.”

“That's horrible.” Fluttershy said, placing down her teacup. “They're really all alone in there, aren't they?” She asked, her tone sounding as if she were talking about a lost animal.

“It kind of reminds me of the parasprites. Just one or two problems at the start, but they double every second.”

Fluttershy nodded, giving Twilight a gentle smile as she did. “That sounds hard, but if anypony can help them, it's you, Twilight. You always find a way to bring creatures together, even when it seems impossible.”

Twilight returned the smile, “Thanks, Fluttershy. It helps knowing everypony's here for me.”

The next two days passed with little to no headway, each meeting leaving Twilight feeling like a weight was pulling her backwards.

By the end of the third day she was surprised to hear a knock at her door, her friends had just left so it likely wasn't one of them. Opening the door, while answering her question, did nothing to alleviate her surprise as one of the delegates stood before her.

“Markus?” Twilight asked, blinking at the carefully groomed man standing before her. “Uhm, is there anything I can help you with?”

He bowed with a flourish, his polite smile easy and practiced. “I believe that we can help each other, Twilight.”

Twilight hesitated, uncertainty pricking at the edges of her thoughts, Markus had been neutral at best throughout the talks, his comments polite but noncommittal. Even his requests for concessions had been mild compared to some of the others. This was a strangely sudden shift for the man who appeared to be only present as a formality. “Alright … Uhm, come in, and let's talk.”

“Thank you.” Markus stepped inside, glancing around the room with an air of casual curiosity. “The accommodations are quite pleasant. Jurai's commitment to hospitality truly must be commended.”

Twilight gave a small nod as she retrieved her tea set, keeping her primary focus on her guest. “I don't think it's any different from the rooms the other delegates have.”

“Of course,” Markus said, his tone light, “they would never allow their guests to reside in anything but the best.”

Twilight moved with deliberate care, preparing the tea and pouring two cups, placing one in front of Markus before taking her seat. “You mentioned that we could help each other. What exactly did you mean?”

Markus took a slow sip of his tea, his smile steady. “I believe it would be in the interest of the Ferash government to throw it's weight behind your efforts. “Stability, after all, is a benefit to us all.”

“Really?” Twilight asked, relief and excitement flooding her. “I'm so glad to hear that.” She stopped short, reminding herself that even these casual conversations could effect the talks going forward. Something that Markus, no doubt, knew all too well.

“Of course. It is certainly an easier thing for my government to do as the Shisan Pirate Guild did not bother us as often as it did others.”

The next day, Twilight entered the meeting room with a confidence she hadn't felt since the talks began. She took her seat, feeling the support of her friends, and trusting in Markus's quiet promise to back her efforts. However, as the discussions wore on and Markus remained silent, doubt crept in and began to erode her confidence. Had she been misguided to believe his offer of support? Or had she simply misjudged his intent entirely?

By midday the talks had once again spiraled into yet another heated exchange. And if it followed like the others, the shouting would begin all too soon.

“There is no way we would agree to temporary warrants for our leaders simply to satisfy your irrational demands!” Henrik's voice trembled with barely contained fury. “And we cannot trust any of you enough to agree to total disarmament! You would leave us defenseless, at the mercy of the very pirates we're trying to escape from – or worse, force us back into piracy to survive!”

“How are we to trust that you won't use this peace as a shield while you rebuild your fleets and begin raiding our boarders again?” Shizune countered, her tone as cold as steel.

“Or that you won't provide safe harbor to pirates striking against us?” Elhest added, leaning forward and stabbing a finger against the table for emphasis.

Henrik slammed his hand down, his frustrations boiling over at the continued accusations. “We've already made enemies of the nearby pirate guilds by assisting in the rescue of James Glastos!” He gestured sharply towards James, who calmly watched the shouting match beginning. “Maintaining safe boarders, at least on our end, is one of the main reasons we're here! We're trying to establish trust while you –“

“– Yet you refuse to hold your leaders accountable for their crimes,” Elhest interrupted with a scoff, leaning back in his chair with a smug expression. “That says plenty about the trustworthiness of your so-called republic.”

Twilight shifted uncomfortably, trying to think of a way to de-escalate the rising tension without forcibly silencing everyone again. She opened her mouth to speak, but Markus' calm voice cut through the clamor before she could interject.

“Are the return of our relics all you truly intend to offer toward peace?” Markus asked, his tone polite as ever, though pointed.

Henrik turned to Markus, calming down somewhat as at least someone wasn't making accusations. “Of course not, we're offering safe harbor and passage for allied ships, trade agreements, even humanitarian aid if requested. We don't come to the table empty-handed,” he said firmly. “But neither do we come ready to surrender everything we've fought to build.”

Markus nodded, folding his arms as he leaned slightly forward.

Twilight's heart raced, – was this it? Was he finally going to make his stance clear?

The debate between Elhest and Shizune had reached a fever pitch. Voices overlapped as accusations and insults flew freely, and the atmosphere grew more hostile with every passing moment. Twilight felt as though everything was crumbling around her, that she had failed to be any kind of mediator. Her horn began to glow as she grit her teeth, ready to forcefully silence everyone once more and hope that she somehow would manage to get them to see eye to eye.

Elhest's voice cut sharply through the noise, “You speak of peace, yet your alleged republic sits at the very center of this instability. If the Shisan cannot make reasonable concessions and ensure that their territory is secure, then perhaps it's best left to those of us capable of maintaining order.”

Shizune smirked, leaning forward. “Precisely. Your inability to manage your own affairs endangers all of us. Perhaps as territories under our governance you wouldn't pose such a risk to your neighbors.”

Henrik's hands balled into fists as he heard the suggestion. “Your demands are the very thing that would make us unable to manage our problems. We came seeking allies in peace, not vultures looking to feast on our corpse!”

Twilight was certain she had lost all control of the talks, and she had nopony to blame but herself.

How could I agree to this? I handle friendship problems, not intergalactic peace talks! Seto was wrong about me! I should just stick to my school, and my map table – I can't be trusted with anything like this. Princess Celestia was right to not leave Equestria to me!

As Twilight's mind raced with doubt a single voice came through to her.

Markus placed his hands on the table and spoke at last, his voice clear and commanding enough to quiet the room. “It seems to me this discussion has wandered far from peace,” his eyes deliberately moving between Elhest and Shizune. “All I see here are two parties angling for control – neither of you came here to discuss peace with the Shisan Republic. You both came with your allies to browbeat concession after concession until one of you could simply come in and claim their territory for yourselves.”

Twilight's horn went dark as she stared at Markus. Her attention fixed on him as he continued.

“Elhest, Shizune,” Markus said, his tone polite but firm, “your arguments betray your intentions. This isn't about trust, or even safeguarding your borders. Instead you intend to expand them! You both see the Shisan Republic not as a partner in peace, but as a pawn – a convenient battleground where your governments can settle some twisted rivalry under the guise of diplomacy.”

The room was as silent as the vacuum of space outside as the truth was laid bare for everyone.

Markus gestured towards Henrik, “And at what cost? The destabilization of the Shisan Republic would inevitably destroy them, plunging this entire region into chaos. Jurai would have no choice but to intervene, not to mention the pirate guilds watching this unfold, eager to expand their own territory in the bedlam caused by all of this.”

Eika, seated across the table, leaned forward, “Markus is correct,” she said coolly, “Jurai has no interest in seeing this region of space fall back under pirate control. If needed, we will act swiftly to restore order and secure the region against hostile action.”

The Galactic Police officer nodded in agreement, her voice measured but resolute. “Jurai's involvement would not go without support. The Seniwan military would stand with them. Any attempt to destabilize this region further would not go unchecked.”

The weight of their words hung heavily in the room, and for the first time since the talks began, Elhest and Shizune looked genuinely uneasy.

Markus turned back to Twilight and Henrik, his smile not the practiced one he so commonly wore, but simple and genuine. “The Shisan Republic has made clear their intentions and commitment to peace. Offering what they can without compromising their survival, which is more than can be said for some at this table.” Markus coldly looked over several of the other delegates, who did not raise their eyes to meet his.

He straightened, pulling slightly at his suit-coat as he did, and concluded, his voice firm as he spoke. “I support the Shisan Republic's recognition as a sovereign power. Furthermore, the Ferash government will not hesitate to send aid to help establish your borders and maintain security. This cannot – and will not – become a power-grab at the cost of peoples lives.”

“This isn't a voting matter!” Elhest insisted, standing abruptly as he spoke.

“You're right.” Markus calmly replied. “It was a statement of intent from the Ferash government. And if any of you move against the boarders of the Shisan Republic you will be in violation of several of our treaties.”

“That sounds pretty official to me.” The Galaxy Police officer commented, smirking at Elhest who suddenly looked deflated as he slowly sat back in his chair.

Pinkie's party was in full swing with streamers and confetti flying around the brightly decorated room. The paper lanterns had returned, joined by a large banner bearing the word “CONGRATULATIONS” with Twilight's cutie mark on either side. Cupcakes covered all of the table area not already taken by the punch bowl, and the lively music could easily be heard from the corridor.

“I knew you could do it!” Rainbow Dash said, landing beside Twilight with a grin. “When the pressure's on, you always come through.”

Twilight gave a faint smile, the pressure of the last few days still weighing on her. “Thanks Rainbow. But … It doesn't feel like I actually did that much.”

“Not much?” Applejack chimed in, sidling up to Twilight with a cup of punch. “Twi, if you think keepin' a room of folks – all angry at one creature – from goin' up in flames ain't much, then I think you need to lower yer standards a touch.”

“It all just kind of happened around me,” Twilight admitted, her wings drooping as she thought about the meetings. “Markus, Henrik, and even Eika – they're the ones who really did everything.”

“You're selling yourself short, darling,” Rarity said, flipping her mane as she approached. “Surely without your calm presence and natural charisma, there would have been no progress at all.”

Before Twilight could reply, James approached, finishing off the cupcake he held. “They're right,” he calmly said. “While a lot happened around you, none of it would have happened without you.”

Twilight looked up at him, uncertain. “But …”

“You're the reason the Shisan even got the chance to come to the table.” James explained, his tone warm as he continued. “You made sure that they got the opportunity to speak when something needed to be said. You kept actual fights from breaking out. You saw it through when things became heated. You did a good job, even if it doesn't feel like you did that much.”

Twilight blinked a couple times as she thought about his words, a smile beginning to tug at her lips as a flicker of pride began to break through her lingering doubt. “Thanks, everyone,”she said softly.

At that moment, Pinkie Pie bounced over, her party hat sitting askew on her head. “Hey, you're being too serious, this is a congratulations party!” She announced, “Now lets get on that dance floor!”

Everyone laughed at Pinkie's declaration and smiled as she dragged Twilight to the area that had been cleared just for dancing.

For the first time in days, Twilight felt the pressure begin to lift as she finally allowed herself to enjoy the moment.

She had no idea how long she'd been dancing when a knocking on her door brought her attention back from the dance floor.

Before Twilight realized what was going on, Pinkie had already dashed to the door, welcoming the new arrivals with her usual enthusiasm. “Come in!” Pinkie said with an excited squeal. “There's always room for more.”

Twilight immediately recognized the two new arrivals as Pinkie practically pushed them in. “Markus, Henrik.” Twilight smiled politely as she approached, curious about their unexpected visit. “Pinkie's right – there's certainly room if you want to join us.”

Markus nodded as he returned the smile and gave a quick polite bow. “I appreciate the offer, Twilight. I came to offer you an official thank you from the Ferash government. Your actions have not only added a stabilizing force to an area of space under contention from three forces, but opened much-needed trade opportunities for my people.”

Twilight blinked, momentarily caught off guard by the formality, but her chest swelled with a quiet pride. “That's kind of you to say,” She replied, trying to suppress a nervous laugh. “But it wasn't just me.”

The talk of trade quickly drew James' attention. He stepped forward, raising an eyebrow as he did. “You're talking trade agreements already?”

“Not just yet.” Henrik interjected, shaking his head. “Right now we're focused on the logistics of our borders and the aid Markus offered. But we're certainly going to need it.” His tone dropped slightly, betraying a hint of unease.

“Yes, the tedious work has only just begun.” Markus added with a sigh. “We'll make sure the information is properly distributed to minimize potential misunderstandings along the newly established border.”

James nodded briefly before reaching into a concealed pocket and producing a pair of cards that appeared to shimmer in the low light. “If you wish, this card will serve as an invitation to the annual Trade Conference New Guardia holds. Contact us by the date on the card and we can arrange transport and even a market stall if you want to bring a vendor.”

Markus and Henrik accepted the cards with quiet thanks. Markus looking at his card with a level of surprise, and Henrik placing his in his pocket with a nod.

The atmosphere was threatening to grow too serious when Pinkie interrupted with a blast from her party cannon, showering the group in confetti and streamers. “Come on,” she mock fumed, smiling as she waived them over to her. “What part of “party” is so hard to understand? You should be having fun! Work can wait.”

Markus looked around at the decorations, the confetti settling around them and the paper lanterns still swaying from the force. After a moment, he shrugged, a rare glimmer of relaxation in his otherwise composed demeanor. “We've got the time. I believe we've all earned a little celebration.”

Twilight chuckled softly, letting herself enjoy the sight of Markus and Henrik being swept into Pinkie's orbit. Rather than join them, she opted to walk towards Starlight, who was even now getting a fresh cup of punch, pulling a wayward streamer from the bowl as she did.

Starlight smiled as she saw Twilight approaching, “As crazy as it's been to even just be here, I'm looking forward to getting back to Ponyville.”

“Yeah, it'll be nice to finally be around ponies again …” Twilight began, her voice trailing off as her smile wavered.

“I'm sensing a “but” coming.” Starlight said with a knowing smirk. “Is this about the letter?”

Twilight groaned softly, “Of course it's about the letter. I mean, we have no idea who sent it, who they're talking about, what it even is I'm apparently being lied to about. It's the only clue I have and it gives me nothing.” She kept her voice low, unwilling to dampen Pinkie's party for a third time.

Starlight nodded, taking a sip of her punch. “I'm not going to tell you not to worry about it. We both know how useless that advice would be. But let me ask you this: How much did you know about these talks going into them?”

“I knew that the Shisan Republic, Jurai, and James would be involved.” Twilight answered, frowning as she tried to recall anything else.

“That sound's an awful lot like nothing to me.” Starlight grinned. “Now what did you know before Xellos showed up and brought back Grogar?”

Twilight flinched, vividly remembering the chaos and harm that the mazoku caused, all for the sake of getting an answer for his master that still didn't fully make sense to her.

“I was there, so I'll just go ahead and say “nothing,”” Starlight continued with a teasing tone. “Want me to keep going? I've got a dozen examples ready.” Starlight smiled as she collected a second cup of punch to give Twilight. “All I'm saying is, you've handled big problems with no clues before. And it's not like you have to do it alone, we're all here to help you like always.”

Twilight's horn lit up as she accepted the cup. Starlight's words taking the edge off her worries for the time being. “You're right. It's just … sometimes it's hard to remember I don't have to figure everything out by myself.”

“Well it's a good thing we're here to remind you.” Starlight said with a chuckle, holding her cup up in a toast.

Twilight smiled, tapping her cup to Starlight's and taking a drink, now more than ready to get back on the dance floor.
