Chapter 204: RESET

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

“So then, after this RESET and after freeing the monsters and helping them settle down… What's next?” Phantom asked. ”More specifically-what to do about him?” She waved in Chara's general direction.

Sweetie Void hummed. ”I… don't think there is anything left to do? We more than taught him his lesson, and he promised to fix things up. So unless he further messes up, we leave things be.”

Phantom tsked. ”That's-”

“The fair thing to do,” Frisk spoke up. ”If one is willing, they should always have the option to make up for their mistakes.”

“And it's not like there’s a completely blameless party here,” Apple Death said. "The Frisk of this timeline just wanted a way ta save his Asriel, but nonetheless he committed great sins in trying ta. Chara, for all the wrong he did by sabotaging Frisk's second Pacifist Run and pressuring Frisk on a second Genocide, was ta an extent rightfully angry that Frisk thought himself ta be above consequences for his actions and could just have his happy ending completely scott-free.”

Sweetie Void nodded. ”Yeah. So all in all, I am willing to give them another chance in the new timeline. Again,so long as they never do something like that again.”

“Me too,” Frisk agreed.

“Mmm… Ah’m a bit on the fence with this one, but not entirely against the idea,” Apple Death said.

Phantom crossed her arms. ”Well I'm not. And you better watch yourself, I’ll be keeping an eye on you both,” she said as she sent a glare at Chara making him flinch.

Everyone then looked at Sans, being the only one left yet to voice his opinion.

Sans just sighed, sounding tired.

“look kid, i could be all threatening and stuff too but… honestly, at this point, i don't feel like beating on a dead horse,” he said, chuckling a bit before talking seriously again.

“i don't know if i ever feel like forgiving ya and you definitely never have my trust again-not to the degree I once had it anyway, although some serious talk could help. All that's to say that for the sake of everyone else, i'm at the very least willing to remain civil. how stuff goes after that, it’s all on you.”

Chara nodded. ”Ok. Frisk agrees too.”

Sweetie Void smiled. ”Well, guess it’s time for the Reset now.”

Chara nodded. Then, his body glitched back into Frisk’s body, and Frisk dropped on his knees before it could register to him that he had control again.

Then, he stared at the other Frisk for a moment before he jumped on his feet and wrapped her in his arms, crying. “Thank you!”

Smiling, Female Frisk wrapped her arms around her counterpart and gently patted his back. “There, there. It’s over now. Now, please, RESET. Let’s make things right.”

Male Frisk nodded, then released his counterpart.

“Wait,” Sweetie Void suddenly said before she looked at Female Frisk. “Don’t you want to return to your world first?”

Female Frisk giggled. “And miss all the fun here?”

Sweetie Void grinned. “Good point. We will have to find a nickname for you then. Well then, everyone who doesn’t want to be RESET, gather around me. Frisk, do your thing.”

Male Frisk, who rubbed his cheeks to remove the tears, nodded and walked away from everyone who gathered around the alicorn.

Sweetie Void lit her horn, creating a field around her.

Male Frisk RESET, and the world disappeared, then reappeared.

Any damage taken by the Hall was gone. Male Frisk was also gone, obviously back to the starting point, in the Ruins.

Sweetie Void removed the field she created, and Sans immediately stepped away from her, waving his arm above him.

“welp, i’m returning to my job. see ya once you step out of the ruins.”

With that, he walked behind a pillar and disappeared.

Sweetie Void looked at Apple Death and Phantom and smirked. “Hey. How about we turn into humans?”

Frisk had to put a hand on her mouth to stop herself from laughing. “Five humans at once. Everyone will lose their mind. Especially Papyrus. And Undyne may go Super Sayian, literally.”

“If her hair turns golden, I’m calling dibs,” Sweetie Void said before she looked back at the fillies. “So, what do you think, you two?”

Phantom gave a very evil grin. “Why not? Let’s turn this place crazy.”

Apple Death laughed. “Yeah. Let’s do it.”

At that, Sweetie Void turned herself and her friends into humans. Remembering the tradition that children wear striped clothes, she gave herself a black sweater with white stripes, gave Phantom a black one with red stripes, and gave Apple Death a red one with green stripes. Sweetie then eyed Frisk’s sweater and decided to reverse its colors, turning it purple with blue stripes.

“To better differency you from your twin.”

“My twin? Oh, I guess that we needed an excuse for the two of us looking similar.”

“Exactly. Any nickname in mind?”

“Mmh… Kris?”

“Ooh! An anagram of your name, without the F! Not bad! Well, I guess that that’s everything. Time to go. Frisk must be waiting for us.”

“And I don’t feel good leaving him alone for too long,” Phantom said.

“I don’t think that we will see him killing monsters anytime soon, don’t worry,” Sweetie Void reassured. “Now, let’s go.”

At that, she teleported the group to the start of the Ruins, at the patch of Golden Flowers under the hole. Here they found Frisk who was sitting on the flowers.

He smiled at them. “I thought that you wouldn’t appear before Toriel’s arrival.” Then he got a good look at them. “You turned yourselves into humans?”

“To see everyone’s reaction when they see us,” Sweetie Void said.

“Chaos worthy of Discord incoming,” Apple Death said with a chuckle.

Frisk then looked at his counterpart. “And you changed your sweater?”

“To make me look different from you. Also, call me Kris. Let’s make it short for Kristina. And think of me as your twin.”

“Alright. Wow. Papyrus will drop his jaw, literally.”

This made Sweetie Void and Kris laugh.

“And Undyne may take her Undying form,” Frisk continued.

This made the two stop and look at him in confusion.

“Undying form?” Kris asked.

Frisk got excited. “That’s right, you never saw it since you never did a Genocide. When I was about to kill Monster Kid, she jumped between me and him and was hit in his place. I gave all my killing intent, so she was a goner in just one hit, like Toriel and Papyrus before her. But then, instead of dying, she was suddenly filled with Determination and made a whole speech about how I will destroy everyone’s hopes and dreams, both humans and monsters, and she will not let me. Then she transformed, and she kicked my ass. That was awesome! Even Chara got huge respect for her!”

Everyone stared at him in awe.

“So, let me get this straight,” Kris began. “Undyne was dying, but then gave a heroic speech, said “NO” to Death, and turned Super Sayian before killing you, the bad guy, like a real heroine?”

“Yes! It took me so many tries to kill her the first time! She really became the heroine of monsterkind at this moment.”

Phantom whistled, then looked at Sweetie Void. “We should invite her to the Alliance.”

Sweetie Void looked down sadly and shook her head. “Undyne’s transformation is not without consequence for her. Determination is very bad for monsters. If they get too much of it, their body melts and loses physicality. If they don’t find other monsters to merge with, their body gives out, resulting in their death. So, even if Undyne had won, she would have eventually died. Unless she absorbed Frisk’s SOUL, but knowing Undyne, she would have left it for Asgore and let herself die with a big smile knowing that she did her duty and saved and freed monsterkind.”

“Oh… She really is a heroine. Selfless to the end.”

“Yeah.”

Kris changed the subject. “And then, there is Mettaton. I can’t imagine what-”

She was interrupted by a gasp.

They all looked at the exit of the room where they saw Toriel herself now present, hands on her mouth.

“F-five humans?!”

Sweetie Void gasped. “A goat woman!”

Toriel slowly approached the children, not wanting to scare them. “Hello my children, do not be scared. I am Toriel, the caretaker of this place, the Ruins. I come here everyday to see if humans like you have fallen. Are you alright? Are you hurt after this drop?”

Frisk got up from the flowers and shook his head. “No Miss Toriel, we are alright. Nobody is hurt.”

“Glad to hear.”

Kris then approached. “Hello gran… Miss Toriel. Nice to meet you. My name is Kris, and this is my twin brother, Frisk. And these are my friends… Uh…” She pointed at Sweetie Void. “Elize.” She pointed at Apple Death.

Apple Death spoke before the girl at time to say something. “Jacqueline. Call me Jackie for short.”

“And I’m Ruby,” Phantom said.

“Nice meeting you, my children,” Toriel said. “Welcome to the Ruins. Now, let me guide you through the catacombs.”

“Of course,” Apple Death said.

Toriel moved toward the exit, and the children followed her. She guided them through the first puzzles, taught them to talk to a dummy, and scared away a Froggit who attacked them. Then, they reached a long room where Toriel asked them to walk to the other side by themselves to test their independence, much to the children’s amusement. She was such a mom. It got a bit on Phantom’s nerves to be treated like a toddler.

After that, Toriel gave them a very old phone that Kris took and left them alone, asking them to remain in the room and to wait for her.

“I tried waiting for her once,” Frisk informed. “However, an annoying dog stole her phone and kept her chasing it as long as I remained in the room.”

Frisk’s face suddenly changed, his eyes opening fully and pink appearing in his cheeks. “It’s this same dog who was stealing the red orb from us, no matter how much we tried to get it.”

Kris snorted. “Toby is a good boy, but I agree that he can be very annoying. Papyrus agrees too. Sans is pretty much best pal with him.”

“Not a big surprise,” Chara said with a flat look before he left his place back to Frisk.

“By the way,” Frisk then began before he looked at his counterpart. “Is it me, or you almost called Toriel “grandma”?”

“Well, she is my grandma,” Kris answered.

Sweetie Void chuckled. “Remember what I said? Chara and Flowey slash Asriel are your parents. By extension, Toriel and Asgore are your grandparents.”

Chara returned, looking angry. “That’s right! Where is that weed? I want to say two words to him!”

“I’m right here!” they heard from the exit of the room. There, they saw Flowey.

He was visibly shaking.

“YOU!” Chara yelled before he began to stomp toward Flowey, raising his stick.

Apple Death quickly grabbed him from behind, stopping him. “Woah there! Don’t do something ya’ll regret!”

“I won’t regret what I want to do to him! Let me go!”

“Nope!”

“He made me a father! At ten years old!”

“And it’s worth it,” Kris said before she began to massage his shoulders. Immediately, Chara stopped moving and began to melt with a moan. “You will see, once you two have your own bodies, you will have a lot of good and fun time together.”

While all this happened, Flowey observed, stopping shaking.

Sweetie Void placed herself in front of Chara. “You don’t seem to be surprised to learn that Frisk is your son.”

“...I saw part of your fight against Chara, hidden behind a pillar. I was there when you revealed to him about Frisk. Hehehe… That was… quite the world-shaking news. That whole fight has been a roller coaster of emotions. Learning about that and also about Chara killing me and seeing him being so easily and brutally killed by you and his past. You can say… that I need to have a talk with my brother.”

Kris stopped massaging Chara and stepped away from him. Sweetie Void also stepped away, and a calmer Chara approached the flower before sitting down in front of him.

The two stared at each other in silence.

The silence was suddenly broken by Toriel calling and telling that she would take longer than expected, asking them to wait a little longer as a result.

Chara and Asriel didn’t mind this.

Asriel then took a big breath. “Listen. Yes, I’m mad that you killed me in previous timelines. Several times apparently. And you were about to do it again. But, it’s like I told you back then. The two of us were the same. I… certainly would have done the same to you.”

“No, you wouldn’t have,” Chara suddenly said. “You still idealized me. A world without me would be too boring. You would have never killed me, unless I stopped being the Chara you thought I was. The cruel, broken, “kill or be killed” Chara. Which, I guess, would have never happened back then.”

“But me? I made you sacrifice yourself for nothing… I made us fail in freeing the monsters… I made the monsters suffer so much. Our parents… Of course you would still be mad at me. But this is why I adopted your “kill or be killed” vision! I turned myself into you, so I wouldn’t be this weak crybaby anymore! So you would be proud of me!.......... Seems like it wasn’t enough…”

Chara chuckled. “I actually forgave you. A long time ago.”

“What?”

“Back when Frisk did a Pacifist for the first time. You absorbed everyone’s SOULs and revealed yourself to be Asriel. Then I saw your pain, all that suffering that I caused you… And I decided that our death wasn’t your fault, but my fault, so I forgave you. You did the right thing, stopping me from killing the humans.”

Flowey stared at Chara in confusion. Did he hear it right? Chara said that he did the right thing? That it was okay that he let his weakness speak and caused the both of them to die?

“All that anger and hate that I had toward you and monsterkind… I redirected them toward myself. I accepted that I wasn’t the angel of the prophecy, but a demon only made to make others suffer, and I accepted my fate as a voice stuck within Frisk’s head, only spectating as the monsters settled into their new life of freedom without me. It was okay that I remained alone.

But then… Frisk RESET and eventually began killing monsters, and I felt the power of LOVE rush to me. And the more I took, the more I wanted. Monsters became nothing more than a stepping stone, you included. If I was good only to make others suffer, then let them suffer, and use that suffering to become greater. I didn’t kill you because I was angry at you for betraying me. I killed you because you were just one of many in my way to the absolute. Then I would finally leave this world of suffering behind.

But as Kris said, deep down, I still cared for you and for everyone. That thirst for power was just a way for me to hide myself. To hide the love I still felt for all of you. And the shame that I still felt for what I did, and what I was doing. I just… didn’t want to suffer anymore.

But now… I guess that I’m ready to give another chance to this world. No more “kill or be killed”.”

Flowey remained silent after Chara stopped talking. Toriel called again before the flower finally gritted his teeth and muttered, “”No more “kill or be killed””, uh?” He then glared at Chara and yelled, “Are you kidding me?!”

Chara didn’t even react to that.

“Since the day I found you, you constantly told me that the world is “kill or be killed”! You mocked me for my weakness and tried to shape me to become like you! Then I proved to you that you were right when I killed the both of us because of said weakness! So I adopted your vision, “kill or be killed”, and made it my whole life! My motto! All my actions turned around that! I turned into what you wanted me to be! And now, you are telling me “no more”?!”

Chara sighed. “I just want that cycle of hatred and suffering to stop.”

“THEN WHAT THE HELL WAS THE POINT OF EVERYTHING I DID?!!”

“Nothing. There was no point. Like I said, you were right to stop me. I was the one in the wrong.”

“There is no way! Come on, you get beat up, then you get hugged, and suddenly everything is different? But what about everything that happened to you before you came to the Underground? Don’t tell me that the world is not “kill or be killed” after all that! You killed your own father who had been about to kill you, damn it! This is proof!”

Chara looked down, his hair shading his eyes. “..........You are right. This world is messed up. There are moments where it is “kill or be killed”...” He looked back up at Asriel. “But it isn’t everything there is. When I was with you and the monsters, at no moment, there was that. There was only love. The only one who poisoned the underground with that vision was me, and look where it led us. It only brings suffering. It made you suffer. It made mom and dad suffer. It made the monsters suffer. But, no. More. While “kill or be killed” won’t be avoided on the surface, let’s avoid it as much as possible. Let’s rather “love and be loved”.

“BUT YOU KNOW I CAN’T LOVE! SUCH A WORLD IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME!”

Chara pointed at Sweetie Void above his shoulder. “Apparently, give her a couple of SOULs, and she will be able to help you about that.”

That made Asriel stop and give Sweetie Void a hopeful look before he shook his head, his eyes closing. “But then, what? Do we forget everything that happened?”

“No… It will be impossible to forget…”

“You are right. It doesn’t change the fact that… That… That you turned me into… that, FOR NOTHING,” Asriel said before he opened his eyes, now crying. “I wish that you had let your father strangle you.”

Then, he burrowed into the ground and disappeared.

Silence followed.

Chara closed his eyes, tears appearing. “Sweetie Void? Once you get the SOULs… Instead of giving me a body… send me to Hell. That’s all I deserve.”
