Rainbow Dash was sitting under a tree, not too far off from the edge of Ponyville. The violent thunderstorm meant rain pounded down all around her, which the tree just barely protected her from. The thundering booms around her caused by the storm barely phased her as she was whimpering and crying, reflecting on everything that had happened to her in just such a short span of weeks.
It all started with her parents. It was some kind of flying accident, apparently. All Rainbow Dash could remember, however, was the...aftermath. The image that would haunt her mind for the rest of her miserable life.
"Oh, sw-sweet Celestia," she whimpered, the image of the aftermath again coming back to her. It wasn't even that gruesome, but it still haunted her. She couldn't accept what had happened. She just couldn't.
All the stress and mental pain had led to her accidentally getting into a flight accident of her own, permanently disfiguring her left wing. It had to be amputated to save her life, or else she would of likely bled out. One day she could get a prosthetic wing, but it would be expensive. It might even take years to get the money needed.
Years before she could experience her one true joy again.
As a result of this flight accident, she had to resign from the Wonderbolts. Turning in that resignation notice felt horrible, but she did it. And after that, she felt like things couldn't get any worse.
But they did, of course they did.
Twilight Sparkle was coronated princess of all of Equestria.
Rainbow should of been happy for Twilight, but...Twilight was the love of her life. For years she admired and had a crush on Twilight, and now her hopes were broken and destroyed.
Twilight would never have time for a no-good, flightless pegasus like her, let alone want to spend forever with her.
Rainbow Dash whimpered and sobbed more under the tree, praying to any gods above that things might bet better. That she might see a sparkle of hope.
Just then, she heard hoofsteps nearby. They crunched softly on the wet grass, and approached at a moderate pace. Rainbow Dash looked up and saw...
Twilight Sparkle.
Rainbow mentally groaned. Why? Is this just torture me more, torment me since me and her will never be together?
Twilight looked at Rainbow with gloomy and concerned eyes.
"Hey, Rainbow, I'm entirely free today...you wanna talk?" Twilight asked, giving Rainbow a gentle smile.
"Please just leave me alone. Just leave me all alone. Just let me miserable alone. Forget about me. Just go, Twilight, I'm not worth the effort," Rainbow ordered, never once breaking a monotone tone.
"Rainbow Dash, I can't just leave you," Twilight said, slightly more sternly now.
"I don't matter. I never mattered. This world would be better without me," Rainbow responded.
"Rainbow Dash, I never wanna hear those words come out of your mouth again!" Twilight rebuked.
"See, I did something wrong yet again," Rainbow Dash gloomily responded.
"Rainbow, please...just lemme talk, alright?" Twilight asked.
"You actually wanna talk to the planet's biggest loser?" Rainbow asked, looking up at Twilight.
"You are not a loser, Dash," Twilight responded.
Twilight walked to Rainbow's side and sat down.
"Rainbow Dash: the most loyal, brave, and friendly pegasus I know. One who cares about others above herself, a very respectible action. One who never gives up, no matter what life throws at her," Twilight spoke aloud.
Rainbow looked at Twilight, so...nervous and hurt. Hearing Twilight, the love of her life, say all this...when she knew they would likely never be together. It hurt her soul.
"P-please stop, please leave me alone...please just let me give up," Rainbow Dash whimpered.
Twilight looked deep into Rainbow's eyes and saw a feeling she knew well...love. Twilight barely hesitated to tell Rainbow something, something she had bottled up for years.
"Dashie, I...can't leave you. Dashie, I...love you so much, I've loved you for so long," Twilight spoke gently.
Rainbow jerked away and began hyperventilating.
"Please, nononono, please...please...I...please...please, you're joking, r-right? This is a big joke, right?" Rainbow asked, hyperventilating and in a panic.
"Of course not, Dashie. I love you, and I would love you to be my marefriend," Twilight responded with a gentle smile.
"Nonono...I can't...I can't get close, I can't lose you...if I get close and lose you...I can't deal with that pain," Rainbow whimpered.
"I'm an alicorn, I'm immortal now," Twilight said with a smile.
"B-but if an accident happens? Like with my parents?" Rainbow whimpered out.
"Alicorns have very good regenerative abilities. It takes a lot to kill one," Twilight responded.
"If I die, you'll just hurt. I'll just mess up again," Rainbow replied sadly.
"I heard once that once an alicorn finds her soulmate, their soulmate shares their immortality forever. And Dashie, you're my soulmate," Twilight said with a smile.
"Y-you're the ruler of Equestria, we'll have no time for each other," Rainbow retorted.
"I'll make time for my loyal soulmate," Twilight said with a gentle grin.
Rainbow Dash couldn't believe it. A light at the end of a dark tunnel. A...sparkle of hope. A Twilight Sparkle of hope.
"So Dashie, will you be the very lucky marefriend of the now very lucky to have you princess of friendship?" Twilight asked.
"W-we can't go on flies together...I can't do a lot of things with just 1 wing," Rainbow whimpered.
"I don't need romantic flights with you. I don't need anything fancy, Dashie. I just need your love. To wake up to your cheerful loyal smile everyday. To see the colors of the rainbow every night before I to to sleep. To feel your warm embrace. To hear you tell me you love me. To hear you encourage me. That's all I need to be happy, is you, and besides...we're gonna save up money and get you that prosthetic wing, and one day we will go on romantic flies together," Twilight responded.
Rainbow paused for a few seconds, reflecting on Twilight's words before reaching a decision.
"Twilight, I...I love you so much. I...want to spend forever with you. I want...you to never leave me. I want to...be in your wings forever and ever, I...will be your marefriend. And whenever you want me to, I'll gladly marry you," Rainbow responded.
Twilight embraced Rainbow in her wing.
"Trust me, I'm never gonna leave you. I love you, Dashie, and nothing in this world is gonna change that," Twilight responded.
"T-thank you so much, I-I think I can finally...be happy again," Rainbow responded with a gentle smile.
"Trust me, Dashie, it's gonna all be fine. Mental wounds will heal with time. And...maybe not literally, but...you're gonna be in my wings forever," Twilight responded, returning the gentle smile.
The two looked at each other.
They were gonna be in each other's wings forever.
