Chapters Chapter 1: 14 Years Later
“James can you give me a hoof over here–Termite quit that right now!” Odonata shouted from outside a small cottage, next to him was a young teenage Changeling with a stick in his mouth.
“But it has nutritional value!” the teen, Termite, protested with a pout.
His short mane was silver and his pupils were a pale blue, he was slim with a slightly muscular build.
The stick was pulled from his mouth by Odonata, who glared weakly at him. He shouted again, “James!” the door was opened and another Changeling stepped outside.
This Changeling had a bright green cob-webby mane that reached his jawline, his pupils were green and his horn had holes in it. It was James Bridge, now twenty-seven years old.
His ear had a small scar on it, but it only made him look even more charming. He had a smile on his face as he said, “sorry Odie, Willow needed my help with dinner!”
His friend turned back to his son and grumbled, “see, at least your brother knows how to follow directions. Now go help him in the kitchen as a good brother should.” Termite groaned before going back into the house.
James couldn't help but laugh at the sight, it was such a common occurrence that would never get old. Odonata sighed before putting a hoof to his head, “these kids are going to be the death of me, just wait for when you have your own James...”
“Like anyone would be that interested in me, I'm happy just helping out,” James responded in a kind tone, going over to sit next to his friend.
Odonata cocked an eyebrow, “Is that so? I'm sure you're a pretty good catch from what I've seen, haven't you tried dating at all?”
“I have, it’s just that none of them stick. To be completely honest I think most of them just wanted a physical relationship with me... It's gross once I think about it. How about you, still not over your prince charming?”
“Oh hush you,” Odonata blushed, “I can remain loyal all my life if it's necessary, I've already settled down in a way. Besides, I'm sure that I'll see him again one day.”
James shrugged, “that doesn't sound very likely but, who am I to judge. I've never been in love, not really.”
“Remember that boy you told me about a couple of years ago? What was his name, oh right! Cricket, you said he was the cutest—” Odonata was interrupted by a hoof being slapped over his mouth.
James’ cheeks flushed bright green as he hissed, “shut it! We don't speak of that, it's in the past anyway.”
His friend gasped aloud, “you so still like him, that’s so sweet! Or is your type similar to him, tell me about it,” James had no idea how he constantly forgot how much Odonata loved to tease him.
“Leave me be, you heathen!”
“Mama, why are we here again?” a pale green earth pony asked in a whisper, her raven black mane was in a low ponytail.
She was walking down a path with her family, her father was pulling a wagon full of luggage and sentimental items. Her mother was walking right beside her while her younger and older siblings were behind them.
Her teal eyes held nothing but exhaustion, especially when her mother responded with, “because Lily, you're helping out by being a nurse here, they need all the help they can get. Plus your pretty face might help recruit a few more stallions, maybe you'll meet a particularly handsome one here?”
The young mare gagged, rolling her eyes before grumbling, “yeah right...” the mere idea of finding interest in a stallion that was probably decades older than her was enough to make her sick.
Her cheeks flushed a soft pink as she remembered someone who caught her eye over a decade before, she still remembered his handsome face and kind words. Too bad she was never going to see him again, maybe it just wasn't fate.
Lily never really believed in all that anyways, if fate was real then her mother wouldn't be stuck with her lousy father. All she could do was hope that the same wouldn't happen to her, then again she was still young.
Eighteen-years-old, the year she was supposed to be enjoying her life before her parents kicked her out of the house. Well her father would, if it was her mother's choice she’d be allowed to stay until the day she dies.
“We’re here, set your things inside won't you, Liliana?” her mother gently instructed, Lily did as told as she found no reason to ignore her.
The cottage was small, but then again it was only temporary. Her father told them that they'd only be staying for a few months to recruit soldiers, then they'll be gone to who knows where.
Lily felt out of place when she stepped inside, hearing the floorboards creak underneath her. She could only hope that there weren't as many bugs as she feared, just imagining it made her cringe.
A sharp voice barked behind her, making her jump, “Liliana, get your useless ass out here and help me unload the wagon!” she sighed, having not expected anything less from her father.
She set her things by the doorway before walking outside, she wasn't in the mood to have her hair pulled out of her skull again. She saw her father's harsh glare towards her, she didn't feel scared though.
If anything she was bored by how normal it was to her.
“Here's your dinner, uncle James!” a young teenage Changeling cheerfully said, placing a bowl of Cao lau in front of the elder male.
His hair was long and silver, reaching below his shoulders and being silky. Unlike his brother who's blue eyes held a sense of adventure and wonder, his held kindness and contentment.
“Thank you, Willow,” James responded with a smile.
He then took a bite out of the dish, tasting the rice noodles mixed with pork. He still couldn't believe he once went over a month without the meat, he'd lose it if he had to do that again.
Poor Willow had been so embarrassed to ask for help earlier, but thankfully James stepped in without teasing him. The ingredients were rather simple: rice noodles, pork, greens, bean sprouts, herbs, and some broth.
Judging from the salty yet sweet flavor, Willow did an excellent job!
“It came out even better than expected, amazing work Willow!” James praised, lightly patting the young Changeling’s head.
Willow uttered a shy thank you before sitting down as well, serving himself a noticeably smaller amount of food. He was always self-conscious about his weight, James surprisingly never really went through that when he was Willow’s age.
Willow’s twin brother Termite, on the other hoof, ate like there was no tomorrow. Quite typical of him...
“Do you think we can go on a walk by the river tomorrow?” Willow asked his father, who nodded with a grin.
“Of course we can, Willie... Oh, or do you just want to see that kelpie again?” Odonata teased, making his son flush bright blue.
Then he bit his cheek as he mumbled, “m-maybe...”
His brother shot out from his chair and pointed at him, “I knew it! I saw you kissing a girl last week, that was her, wasn't it?! That kelpie!”
“S-stop, Myrtle and I aren't together!” Willow squeaked, covering his flushed face.
James couldn't stop himself from snorting as he watched this exchange going on between the brothers.
“Willow and Myrtle sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”
“TERMITE!”
Author's Note
The sequels here!!! Also I really wanted to show the different family dynamics between them, one is healthy while the other is clearly abusive
Chapter 2: The Mare in the Meadows
“Mama, I'll be out for a few hours! If dad asks where I am, tell him you don't know, ” Lily told her mother before leaving the house, her father was at the base a few miles away.
That meant she had a break from him for just a few hours, which sounded like paradise to her. Lily had been planning on exploring the wildlife here, having been inspired by talking to her penpal, Fluttershy about nature in general.
She planned on gathering some flowers to make a bouquet, maybe she should have multiple different ones instead of just one kind. The idea made her smile softly to herself, it was nice whenever she found a small distraction from her home life.
Lily wasn't too knowledgeable on the subject of Trotland flowers and plants so it would also be a learning experience for her, it'd be fun, to be honest. Fluttershy was really influencing her hobbies, then again she was a good influence.
As she made her way to the meadows, she hummed quietly to herself. Lily never realized how strange it was to be able to hum, her father often gave her a dirty look whenever she did it. Once again, she was used to it, so it didn't bother her too much.
Another voice startled her out of her thoughts, so she turned to see a strange creature standing in the grass. Her heart skipped a beat as she was hit with familiarity...
Could... Could that be...?
“Uncle James! Watch tv with us,” Termite called out, waving to the older Changeling.
On the screen was a cartoon with a strange little Changeling with a monkey’s tail, James recognized it as Dragon Ball; that new cartoon that Changelings were going crazy over.
The twins were watching it with Thaydonese subtitles as the language it was in was Chenjinese, the one language James just couldn't pick up.
He grinned at the twins, replying with, “I’ll join you two later, I have to find some leaves or flowers for tea. Your dad will have my head if I don't start looking now.”
“Okay, have fun!” Willow giggled before waving goodbye.
Termite on the other hoof just stuck his tongue out at him.
How typical of the brothers.
James left with a smile on his face, it was nice to have a family again. But, at the same time, it was kind of bittersweet for him... Whatever happened to Netwing anyway? The Changeling could only hope that his adoptive father got better after he left, and maybe he even left his good-for-nothing wife!
Trotland was lovely, with how green and lush it looked around him. He still missed Fanggook of course, tending to the fields and seeing the wildlife was what made it worth living in. Nowadays he was just helping out Odonata with the kids and picking up whatever jobs he could find, it would be a lot easier if he was still in the military...
At least that paid enough money for food and necessities.
If only they were still in contact with Bright Mac and Burnt Oak, they’d probably help them out in a heartbeat! Unfortunately, from what happened fourteen years ago, they didn’t seem to trust them anymore.
What he would give to be with those guys again, seeing Odonata truly happy sounds more than worth it! One day , he reminded himself, he’ll be in Equestria one day with Odonata and the twins.
James let out a sigh, saying with a tired smile, “Gods help me...” this was mainly to himself.
What more could he ever want—
“H-hey there! Do I know you?” The voice sounded feminine and weirdly familiar, but more mature if that made any sense.
He turned to see a sight that made him stop in his tracks, his jaw may have dropped even! Never had he seen such a gentle and serene sight, a pale green mare with a flowing black mane was standing alone in the fields, smiling hopefully at him as she waved her hoof.
Her teal eyes looked so alive, gleaming in the sunlight.
It took James a moment to realize something, he knew this mare... but from where? He was about to answer her when she ran towards him, exclaiming, “you look really familiar! And that’s saying something, I don’t usually see Changelings around here.”
“U-uhh...” his heart skipped a beat as she observed his features, gently lifting his chin up with the tip of her hoof.
He couldn’t help but note this, she was so gentle towards him. Even her voice was soft as she whispered, “you look like a Prince, a pretty one at that...”
When she said that, it hit her who he was. “You’re James, right?! The soldier I had a huge crush on!” She practically shouted before covering her mouth, as if she didn’t mean to add that last part.
“Y-yeah... that’s me,” James mumbled with a green flush, then continued with, “you look familiar to me, I just can’t remember how.”
The mare blushed softly before trying to answer, “I’m—“
“Liliana!”
The loud shout made them both jump, they turned their heads to see an older stallion standing not too far away. He had a dark look on his face, then he started to step towards the mare as he snapped, “where in Equestria have you been?! Your mother didn’t know a damn thing, or did you tell her to say that you little...”
He paused as his eyes landed on James, his deep frown turned into a sneer, “you! How many years had it been, Bridges? Over ten I believe... I can’t believe you’re still showing your sorry ass out in public.”
James gritted his teeth, answering in the most polite tone he could muster, “it’s nice to see you as well, Rivera. I just so happened to be in the area, although I live in this country; so, I would prefer it you didn’t act like I don’t belong here.”
He glanced at the mare, now knowing her name, Liliana... what a beautiful name... wait a minute—
He remembered who she was! That annoying filly he met as a teen, constantly said they’d get married and have foals. It was kind of uncomfortable thinking about that and seeing just how beautiful she grew up to be.
James hadn’t realized that he had began to stare at her, though she didn’t seem to mind as she smiled back at him. Rivera however, did mind this. He grabbed his daughter by the mane and yanked her away, making her yelp in pain.
“Eying my daughter now, huh?! How typical of a creature like you, drooling over a girl you last met as a kid. It’s kind of creepy if you think about it,” Rivera mocked as he forced Liliana to look up at James, aggressively pulling her mane up.
The Changeling glared at him, hissing, “you shouldn’t be handling her like that, I thought we made this clear over a decade ago.”
He easily pushed his strange attraction to her aside, feeling protective of the young mare. Things haven’t changed much, that was obvious. Lily was still stuck with her abusive father and helpless mother, he tried to help her but his actions clearly didn’t do much.
“Like I told you before, it’s none of your business,” Rivera retorted as he began pulling his daughter away, her soft cries of pain still made James wince.
He knew that once she looked back at him with tear filled eyes, he had to get her away from that stallion, no matter what.
Chapter 3: Remembering the Past
“And then there’s... James, are you even listening to me?” Odonata asked after realizing that his younger friend spaced out.
James blinked a few times before quietly apologizing, then he looked up at Odonata, “what were you saying?”
The older Changeling just sighed and repeated himself, “soldiers are coming to Trotland because a small war is happening. I was also about to say that there’s a chance we might see you-know-who again.”
“I wouldn’t get my hopes up—ouch!” James winced as he was elbowed by Odonata, who glared weakly at him.
The twins glanced at them and then at each other, as if deciding who would question the adults. After a few seconds, Willow decided to ask with a raised eyebrow, “what do you mean by that papa?”
“I’m not saying who yet, no need to get your hopes up for nothing,“ Odonata responded honestly, patting his son’s head with a serene smile.
Then he looked back at James with a more serious look in his eyes, “you’ve been acting weirder than usual today. You were completely fine yesterday but now here you are, sitting with an expression that only says one thing.”
“And that is?” James questioned with an unamused look on his face.
As if dodging the question, Odonata went on about something that almost gave James whiplash from how out of nowhere it felt, “there’s a myth from Fanghai I remember being told by my father when I was young, the tale of Empress Pennata and her lover Orchid. It’s said that—“
“Sorry for interrupting but what does this have to do with me?” James interjected, only to be shushed by Termite and Willow.
He rolled his eyes and decided to just let Odonata go on his little tangent.
“As I was saying,” Odonata said through gritted teeth, “it’s said that she was so enchanted with his beauty and grace that upon meeting him, he never left her thoughts and kept her from doing her duties as Empress. When her advisors realized the reason for her sudden incompetence, they suggested that she seek him out and appoint him as her second husband.”
James rested his cheek on his hoof, already beginning to feel sleepy. It wasn’t his fault! He was so used to falling asleep to folktales being told by his foster father that it was natural for him.
“Even when she learned he lived in a different country she didn’t give up, determined to find the one who caught her heart in a single moment. It’s rumored that she somehow managed to visit him every single night, showing her pure love and devotion to him!”
When Odonata stopped talking James realized that he was done with his story. Since he couldn’t see how it connected with his recent behavior he responded in a snarky tone, “didn’t Pennata also force him to betray his country in order to conquer it? Then after he did so she left him for dead.”
“That part of the story doesn’t matter, what matters is the beginning!” Odonata brushed James’ sarcastic response with a sweet smile.
It almost made James want to uppercut him but then again, that’s just how Odonata was.
“Once again, what does this have to do with me?”
“Papa thinks you’re in love,” Termite bluntly answered before taking a bite of his food.
Willow snorted and covered his muzzle as he saw the look of disbelief on the elder Changeling’s face. “In love?! Odonata your ridiculous ideals are finally getting to your head, how could you possibly come up with that?!”
“It only makes sense, I’ve never seen such a longing look on a Changeling who isn’t in love. So who’s the lucky boy or girl?”
“Even if that was true I wouldn’t tell you,” James hissed as he started to get up.
Odonata yanked him back down as he snapped, “oh yes you are, whether you like it or not! I care a lot about you, James. At least let me help you with this crush of yours, even if it doesn’t go anywhere... I just want you to actually be happy for once.”
The twins looked up expectantly at their ‘uncle’, who flushed red before groaning and letting himself be pulled down. “I’ll answer whatever you want, heathen.”
“There you go, now what’s this mystery mare or stallion called? Are they a pony or perhaps a Changeling!”
James sighed before starting with, “do you remember Vietrot?” Odonata’s lip twitched and his teasing expression changed into a much more somber one.
“Of course I remember, the love of my life left me behind there...” he answered softly.
“Well, ignoring all the mishaps with you and the other hookers—“
“Entertainers!” Odonata hissed as he subtly gestured towards his kids, who gave him incredulous looks.
James rolled his eyes, “hookers, anyways, do you also remember General Fig?”
His friend took a moment to snap out of his embarrassment to realize who he was talking about, “I believe so, always had that filly following him around; she was probably his granddaughter or something.”
“Yeah about that...”
Author's Note
Sorry I’ve been gone for awhile, schools been pretty stressful and I was suffering with a mix of writers block and lack of motivation
“James, things aren’t the way they used to be. Give it a chance, sure the way you two met isn’t the most orthodox, but still! What if you regret not doing anything in the future, this could be your chance!” Odonata excitedly encouraged with a huge grin.
James on the other hoof just cocked an eyebrow, “I’m surprised you even know the word orthodox... anyways, what do you mean by things aren’t the way they used to be? Nothings changed.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, old friend,” the older Changeling gestured for his sons to cover their ears, which Willow did without complaint while Termite rolled his eyes.
Odonata then elaborated, “you see, we aren’t in the slums of Flygon anymore. The few Changelings that managed to get here are living in peace, not fearing the future idea of being forced to work on the streets or going hungry. Have you ever noticed how little you’ve been affected by the past?”
James blinked a few times as he thought about it, his friend wasn’t wrong and that idea almost scared him. He knew for a fact that many of the soldiers must have suffered with flashbacks to the bloodiest of times during the war, he had his fair share as well but then again... that wasn’t the only thing he was exposed to as a kid.
He was constantly surrounded by sex workers and they used crude language that made even present day him cringe. The only explanation he had was, “I guess I wasn’t that fazed by the hookers because I was expecting a life like that. My second name was practically the confirmation for that kind of life.”
“Then don’t you see, this is fate! An opportunity to prove to that bi—“ Odonata stopped himself as he realized Termite wasn’t covering his ears with much effort, so he instead said, “jerk of a name-giver that you’re so much more than that.”
James sighed and picked at what remained of his food, mumbling, “I guess... I never really gave much thought into having a relationship.”
Odonata blushed as he asked in Fangnese—thankfully a language his sons didn’t know, “you’re still a virgin, aren’t you?” Well he certainly wasn’t beating around the bush.
“I-I... Odonata!” James hissed.
Willow questioned, “what’d he say, uncle James?”
“Yeah, why are you so green, uncle James!” Termite smirked with a mischievous gleam in his eyes.
“That’s none of your business, heathen!” James snapped as he ignored the twin’s questions.
Odonata pointed towards the door before saying, “Termite, Willow, do me a favor and collect tea leaves for me.” They protested by pointing out that James just did that this morning, but one glare from their father made them stand up and leave without another word.
Now that they were alone, Odonata leaned against the table as he continued, “I’m serious James, from what you tell me, you’re not very experienced when it comes to relationships.”
“I-I mean... it’s not like I’m that inexperienced. I’ve been kissed before, a few times—and no I don’t just mean Cricket,” James grumbled as he blushed even more, this wasn’t the conversation he wanted to have with his best friend.
“So…?” Odonata tilted his head with a teasing look.
James inhaled sharply, “just because my little sexual interactions haven’t lead to full on intercourse doesn’t mean I’m completely inexperienced.”
His friend snorted, “now if I had that mentality when I was younger than you, I probably wouldn’t have called myself a virgin after I gave another male a—“
“Please, don’t tell me, I don’t want to know about it,” James pleaded with a cringe.
Odonata was like an older brother to him, so hearing a story like that didn’t do anything other than disgust him. Unless it was one that ended in hilarious embarrassment for either Odonata or the partner in the story, James didn’t want to hear it.
Thankfully he didn’t continue the story, unfortunately he decided to mock James by saying, “by the way, no one who’s ever had sex refers to it as intercourse un-ironically.”
“Shut up!”
“This is such a dumb idea, I feel like some pathetic protagonist in a romance novel,” James grumbled as he hid in a bush with Odonata later that night, staring at the house of his supposed “love interest” as his friend put it.
“And that’s alright, as long as it ends in happiness and grubs,” Odonata chirped before patting James on the head.
The plan was simple, wait until all the lights they can see shut off, then James will throw a pebble (not a rock, Odonata clarified from bad experiences from his youth) at whatever window appeared to be Lily’s… and then…
What was end game again? Hopefully not grubs like Odonata was suggesting, unlike him James wasn’t the fatherly type at all.
He was about to ask this question but was interrupted by Odonata shaking his shoulders and whisper-shouting, “all the lights are out! Go fly up and look where she’s sleeps.”
“I’m not a peeping Tom, Odonata. This doesn’t suit my morals,” he grumbled with a flushed face.
“Your virginity says otherwise,” and that comment was what made him move.
Damn Odonata and his stupid remarks, he doesn’t know anything.
Despite his military past and obvious success in it, he was absolutely terrible at stealth missions. And you know what? That wasn’t his fault.
Blame the stupidly loud fly wings he was born with, maybe he should save up money to get them cut off (not like it wasn’t a beauty standard back at home in Fanggook). Why was he complaining about this, you may ask, it was because as soon as he flew up to one of the windows it was opened and a head popped out.
One he didn’t recognize.
The foal appeared to be female and about two to three years old, with a brunette mane and a pale green coat. Her pale orange eyes were wide with curiosity as she stared at James, who was frozen in place, not even a minute had passed before he got caught!
“Lily!” She shouted behind her, making James flinch with a foreign curse the filly couldn't understand, thank the Gods. Speaking of the Gods, why did it feel like his patron Goddess, Caritas, was never backing him up in these types of situations?
Because as soon as the mare he was hoping to see tonight appeared beside her younger relative, his jaw dropped again and his heart skipped a few beats. This wasn’t fair, this was not fair!
Her silky looking mane was a bit messier than when he last saw her but it looked utterly charming on her, her surprised teal eyes looked up at him, glistening from the moonlight. She was also wearing a simple white nightgown that shouldn’t be making him flush as much as he did.
It was just a dress James, for the Gods sake, this is exactly why Odonata calls you a virgin!
James tried his best to say something after snapping his mouth shut, hoping to save whatever dignity he had earlier when the toddler asked her sister, “who’s that? Is he a friend?” Lily blinked a few times, as if trying to process who she was staring at.
Then it hit her, “o-oh, James! What are you doing here, and at such a time?” She shyly questioned, leaning on the window with her forearms.
“J-just hanging out, ya know?” He awkwardly responded while rubbing the back of his neck.
Lily glanced down at her sister before whispering, “why don’t we get you to bed, and before you start complaining,” she held her hoof to the filly’s lips, as if knowing she was about to start whining, “I promise I’ll make you pancakes with extra blueberries and whip cream tomorrow, okay?”
A smile split across the foal’s face, and she quickly rushed away from the window, probably heading to her bed. “Sorry about her, that’s my little sister Marigold, she’s a sweetheart honestly,” she explained with an embarrassed blush.
“It’s no problem, she’s pretty adorable,” James replied, still mesmerized by the beautiful mare in front of him.
He was suddenly grabbed by the neck, making him yelp as he was pulled forward, Lily leaned in to whisper with a cocked eyebrow and a low voice, “now about my earlier question, what are you doing here? You better not be up to any funny business, or else I’ll—“
“No, no,” James shook his head, “not at all. I just really wanted to see you, and to catch up and all. We haven’t seen each other in a long time, Liliana.”
She stammered, as if flustered by him using her full name, “w-well… i-if that’s all, then I guess it wouldn’t hurt letting you inside to talk…”
“I was kinda hoping we could take a walk?” James suggested, but regretted it when he was the suspicious look on her face.
“A walk?” She repeated.
James nodded, “mhm.”
“At night, just the two of us where my family probably won’t know where I’ve gone off to?”
“… possibly?”
“… James, this is exactly how murder happens or… you know, really unpleasant things.”
He sighed, “then be lucky I’m not a murderer, and believe me, being a male Changeling I grew up being warned about taking an offer like this from a female but look where I am now.”
Lily tilted her head in curiosity, “really? That’s… unexpected, I’ve never heard of stallions being warned about something like that before.”
“Hey, how about this? We take a walk, catch up, and I’ll answer any questions you have about Changeling society and norms. It’s not like I’ll mind, I actually really like talking about my heritage.”
“… alright but, try anything weird and I’ll punch you.”
“Deal, let’s go.”
“I’m sorry but you actually thought cutie marks were a ‘right of passage’?!” Lily cackled with tears in her eyes, pointing at the flushed Changeling as he huffed in embarrassment.
“You ponies are weird and that’s exactly why I thought it was the case!” He shot back.
They were both currently sitting by a pond that was well away from Lily’s home, thank the Gods her family couldn’t hear her from this distance. “And you Changelings aren’t?” She giggled, booping his nose with the tip of her hoof.
“I don’t see what’s strange about my species?” He answered honestly, tilting his head.
“How about the whole, discriminating males and the fact you guys eat meat?”
James blinked a few times in thought, it was still odd to think about. Ponies had the opposite problem in terms of gender norms and were strictly herbivores, yet his species wasn’t and it’s been that way for eons.
“Well, it’s always been like that. I was raised believing that my place was at home taking care of the Nymphs and tending to the fields. To think otherwise would get you a good dose of humiliation if others found out so, I’ve never bothered voicing my thoughts to the other villagers… except for…” he paused, a kind face flashed through his mind before he forced it away.
No need to think again about Cricket, the boy was probably already married off to a high-ranking female soldier with his pretty face. There was no point in dwelling on the past, he already left too much behind to think about it.
“Except for…?” Lily gently pushed with a kind smile.
“No one that matters now, I’ve gone too far to even think about going back,” he responded in a cold tone.
The mare was taken aback by this, “is it that personal to you, James? If so, I won’t push until you’re ready.”
“Thanks.”
Lily hummed as she asked, “is there anything from your culture that you like?” James nodded quickly.
“Of course! Don’t get me wrong, Liliana, I’m very proud of my heritage and I take great pride in it! I know it doesn’t sound all that great to outside perspectives but in reality, there were so many happy times I had. With my family…” he shut his mouth as soon as he uttered the word.
His lip twitched and his eyes felt hot, oh no, not right now. He wasn’t affected by it, he couldn’t be affected by it. It was so long ago when he ran away for a new life, when he abandoned his adoptive family just to run off with a group of Equestrians with no second thought… when he abandoned the only two Changelings who truly cared for him.
“James?” Lily softly said as she lifted his chin, he barely even noticed he had starting staring at the ground.
“Sorry, it’s nothing… how about you, what are things like with your family? Besides the whole thing with your dad, of course?” He was avoiding the subject but what else was there to do to make this conversation less awkward?
She lit up a bit as she started rambling about her younger siblings and how adorable they were no matter how much they got on her nerves. Her mother was the stereotypical Equestrian homemaker he’d see in those magazines GI’s back in Vietrot carried, but she had a pure heart and meant well.
James pitied the poor mare.
“Oh James!” Lily suddenly chirped, startling him out of his staring.
“Yeah?”
“Do you live on your own now, and what even brought you to Trotland?” She looked genuinely curious, still not understanding how or why he was here with her.
The Changeling tried to find a way to sugar coat it but failed to think of anyway to do so. “You see, after the Fall of Flygon, many of us didn’t have a choice but to flee the city or be killed by Chrysalis’s army or, even worse, be forced to become one of her mindless soldiers. Odonata and I were supposed to leave for Equestria as well but—“
“Odonata is the older Changeling you were with most of the time, right?” Lily interjected with a soft blush, not wanting to interrupt but wanting to confirm her fuzzy memory.
“Yeah, that’s him. He was actually our ticket to Equestria with his planned marriage to Burnt Oak, that’s the brown stallion we were with. However, something happened that separated us and well, we both got left behind.”
Lily gasped, “that’s horrible! How did you escape?!”
“We were forced to take emergency measures so, traveling by a rickety boat was our best chance at survival. Luckily for us, we survived the long and painful trip here, now here we are.”
“That’s so unfair,” the mare whispered, “you could’ve gone to Equestria but you ended up here of all places. All because of what, something separating you guys?”
James shrugged, “it’s actually a bit more complicated than that but I really don’t feel like going into it. Let me just say, there were a lot of unsolved misunderstandings that just so happened to occur right before the city fell.”
Lily sighed, “you have the most rotten luck, I wish I could’ve done something or at least my grandfather.”
“There was nothing to say or do in that situation, it was already too late when we figured out what was going on. Either way, I’m alright with how things are nowadays. It’s calmer here in Trotland.”
The mare stood up and stretched, “that’s nice to hear but, I wish you could’ve made it with your friends. On the other hoof,” she blushed softly as she admitted, “it’s nice to see a familiar face around here, no matter how long it’s been, you know?”
“Believe me, I get it and, I’m glad to see you too, Liliana.”
They shared a look for a moment before Lily whispered, “I really need to get going, it’s already well past midnight.”
“Yeah, yeah. I should be heading back too… do you maybe wanna…?”
“Do this again?” Lily giggled.
James blushed shyly as he nodded.
She smiled sweetly at him before leaning forward to whisper, “same time tomorrow? It’s not like I have anything else exciting to do.”
“Sounds good, Liliana… bye…”
“Heheh, have a good night, James.”
