Once again, it was that time of year, Hearths Warming Eve to be exact. Typically a rather dreadful time for Trixie Lulamoon. However this year, she didn’t feel the icy snow on her bare hooves. She didn’t feel the frigid winds brush through her mane, leaving it a tangled snowy mess. She didn’t see the snowflakes falling gently all around her. Nor did the unicorn see miles of snow from a storm the previous night. Her wagon was no where in sight. Instead she saw a castle filled with ponies having fun under the traditional Equestrian fire of friendship. It gave Trixie a warm feeling of comfort.
Trixie had spent many past years of her life traveling Equestria, performing great feats of magic for ponies from all walks of life to see. More often that not it was a fulfilling feeling when she finished her magic shows and awaited to be showered with praise from her adoring audience. Yet, after a while it would be redundant. Not to mention the hassle it had been living life on the road.
It was only one year ago today that Trixie had been trying to shovel snow out of her way to get her wagon back on the road. Cold winds brushing against her coat until the weather conditions around Hearth’s Warming Eve would get too bad to keep staying in her own wagon. Having to take shelter in a small town inn, cocooning herself in blankets while she watched her wagon through a window get covered in piles of snow.
Hearth’s warming was never about friends or family for the magician. Not when she had no friends and her family living on the other side Equestria. Yet tonight, Trixie was surrounded by ponies from all over Ponyville. Ponies she knew and even ones she didn’t. A giant Pine tree, a symbol of the pony holiday in the middle of Twilight’s castle where she was holding the town wide celebration.
There were presents under the tree, candy and sweets, streamers and all kinds of decorations all over, and confetti all over the floor, courtesy of Pinkie Pie of course. Ponies talking, laughing, smiling all around her. A warm feeling in her heart that she hadn’t exactly felt since she was much younger. It was different from the satisfaction of performing her magic, she loved doing that, but this…this was different.
Trixie watched it all happen from the corner of the room. The unicorn wasn’t usually one to sit out on a party, but this felt different. A little more distant than she would have liked. Maybe it was just the cold weather, but-
“Trix what are you doing back here? I’ve been looking for you all evening!” A sweet, familiar voice spoke from beside her.
Trixie snapped out of her thoughts and turned to see Starlight standing beside her with a warm smile on her face. Trixie couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her girlfriend. Seeing her reminded Trixie of the whole reason she was here in the first place. If it wasn’t for her she would still be trudging her wagon through a snowstorm somewhere far off in Equestria.
“Just thinking, is all.” Was Trixie’s only reply. She seemed somewhat distant, maybe zoned out a bit.
Starlight must’ve noticed that there was clearly something else on her mind. She gave the unicorn a quick kiss on the cheek and held out her hoof, “Come on, Trix, I know you, and I know when somethings bothering you. What’s up?”
Trixie stayed silent for a moment, pondering on what to say next. She hoped Starlight would just, understand. Something told her she would, so she took a shot at it.
“I am a traveling magician after all. I guess…This is just my first real hearth’s warming in a while…” She trailed off, glancing to the side to avoid eye contact. If it had been anypony else, Trixie would have never said anything, but it wasn’t anypony else, it was Starlight.
Starlight seemed a little surprised, speechless, but only for a moment. Then the mare giggled, causing Trixie to turn back towards her with a puzzled look on her face.
“Oh Trixie, I know what you mean. I haven’t been home for the holidays in years either.” She offered a smile.
“You…haven’t?”
“Trix, I was in my old village. We had Hearths Warming Eve parties, but they weren’t the same.” She paused and took a short breath, “They didn’t feel the same.”
There was a short silence while Trixie processed what she had just said. She and Starlight had become good friends only a little before last Hearth’s Warming. They knew about each other’s past, maybe that was what brought them together at first, but it was more than that now. It was more than just what ponies thought of them and regrets, things like that change your views on life. Maybe those experiences meant more to each of them than they originally thought.
‘Maybe…it’s still more than that.’ She thought to herself as she looked deep into her girlfriend’s violet blue eyes.
Starlight continued talking, “But hey look Trixie, now we’re both here. Ponies that forgave you and like you for who you are. When I first came to Ponyville and had to celebrate hearth’s warming with Twilight and the girls I didn’t want to, but they showed me that I could feel the love of the ponies all around me, they showed me what this holiday was really about!” She took Trixie’s hoof and looked into Trixie’s deep violet eyes. She said more with a look than any words ever could, “Maybe this year…I can show you? Does that sound okay?” She offered with a loving smile. Her voice sounded slightly nervous, Trixie understood that. She’d gone through the same thing, maybe that just made this a whole lot better.
Trixie smiled in return naturally, she couldn’t help it when she was around Starlight. Sweet Celestia did she love that girl.
“I’d like that.” She said, smiling, as she followed Starlight into the party. Maybe this year…she could find what she had been missing out on. Yet, seeing Starlight walking beside her with a happy smile on her face, reminded her that she already had.
