Chapter V: The Fitting

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Everything at the cottage was ready to go, but with Cadence's proposal to Twilight, more planning needed to occur in under a week. Twilight sat alone in the backyard with a notepad and quill levitating in her magic as she took notes on what needed to be done until Flurry surprised her with a tackle hug.

"Oh," Twilight giggled as she hugged the youngest alicorn. "Hello, Flurry." Flurry repositioned herself on Twilight's lap as if she were a filly as she smiled at the lavender alicorn.

"Are you excited about everything?" Flurry asked with a bright smile on her face. Twilight looked at her notes for a second.

"Honestly, I'm a little concerned, sweetie," Twilight answered.

"Why?" Flurry as she leaned in to see Twilight's notes.

"Dresses," Twilight answered. "I know Celestia and Luna have theirs ready to go, but your mother and I haven't had the time to get fittings and everything. Even if we got the best to work on it, the timing would be too close for comfort." Twilight sighed. "It's a good thing I've gotten over my Twilight Spazzes." Flurry giggled. Twilight looked at her niece with a smirk. "You were too young to remember my moments."

"Mom told me about them," Flurry smiled. "But, that's not what I was laughing about." Twilight raised an eyebrow as she watched the youngest alicorn.

"And what might you be laughing at, little one?" Twilight asked as Flurry hopped off Twilight's lap.

"How's you're teleporting magic?" Flurry asked.

"Well, not to brag, but I could teleport to the other side of the world now," Twilight observed as she scratched her chin.

"Good!" Flurry proclaimed as she grabbed Twilight's hoof. "To mom's room back at the empire." Twilight raised an eyebrow. "Trust me," Flurry assured with a smile. "Mom won't mind that we popped in for a few minutes, and you will love what you'll see." Twilight looked back at the cottage to find Cadence mingling with Celestia through the kitchen window. The two went back inside to start cooking a meal for everyone after making the backyard perfect for the occasion. Twilight blinked when she felt her wing being pulled by Flurry's magic. "The longer you take thinking about it, the longer we're gonna be gone."

"Still the eager little filly, aren't you?" Twilight asked with a smile.

"Only when I'm with family!" Flurry replied as she nuzzled Twilight's cheek. "Now, let's go!" Twilight chuckled and ignited her horn with her magic. In a flash of Twilight's magic, they found themselves in a large crystal room, decorated with pictures on every dresser and every wall of Cadence with her family. Everything from the Canterlot Wedding to Flurry's coronation and more. Twilight took a minute to walk around the room to admire the pictures, cracking a tear at most of them while Flurry walked over to a curtain with a smile on her face as she watched her aunt.

"I never knew she had all this?" Twilight observed as she looked around.

"Mom always said she never wanted to forget the best moments," Flurry explained. Twilight looked at Flurry, who stood next to the curtain, which looked large enough to hold two full-grown alicorns behind it. "She especially wanted to keep these preserved," Flurry said as she used her magic to open the curtain. Twilight gasped as she saw what was behind. Within the cavity stood two mannequins, one dawning Cadence's wedding dress, and the other wore Shining's Armor's outfit, but both looked slightly different than the day the couple wore them for their wedding.

"Those are," Twilight studdered as she took a few steps closer.

"Mom couldn't stomach the idea of losing them, so she kept them preserved," Flurry explained as she watched Twilight with a smile. Twilight took a closer look at the outfits.

"Looks like she did more than preserve them," Twilight observed as her tears stained her cheeks. The fabrics were new and vibrant as if non of the original material survived the years. Not only was the material fresh and new, but the outfits also looked larger than Twilight remembered as if Cadence had them refitted over the years. On top of them looking like they could fit a gull-grown alicorn, Shining's suit had wing holes added to the back.

"Well, she did do more than just preserve them," Flurry blushed a bit. Twilight looked at Flurry in curiosity as she used her magic to take the bright red suit off the mannequin and levitate it to twilight. "Try it on." Twilight blinked.

"Flurry, sweetie," Twilight took a step back. "This was your father's. I couldn't possibly-"

"Try it on," Flurry interjected with a smile. "If dad were here, would he really be upset at you for using it for such a special occasion?" Twilight bit her lip as more tears fell down her cheek. After a minute, Twilight took the outfit in her magic. Flurry turned her back at Twilight to admire the beauty of her mother's wedding dress and to give Twilight a moment to slip the outfit on. Twilight found putting the red coat on was considerably easy and that it fit her body to a "T."

"Wow," Twilight observed. "It fits perfectly." Flurry turned to look at Twilight and smiled brightly with tears sliding down her cheeks.

"And it suits you," Flurry observed. Both alicorns smiled at each other with tears running down their cheeks.

"You really don't have a problem with your aunt marrying your mother?" Twilight asked. "While wearing your father's wedding suit?" Flurry walked up and pulled Twilight into a warm hug.

"You've been a mother to me for almost a hundred years," Flurry reminded her. "I can't think of anyone else to call a second mother than you." Twilight teared up as she returned the hug.

"I'd be proud to think of you as my daughter," Twilight observed tearfully. "You sure your mother won't mind me wearing this?" Twilight asked as she found a full mirror to look at herself in the red coat.

"I think the way it fits answers that question," Flurry observed as she smiled at Twilight in the mirror. Twilight smiled as she observed herself in the mirror. It felt as though she was not wearing anything at all. The red fabric molded around her body perfectly and was the most comfortable she had ever felt.

"It fits so perfectly," Twilight observed as she admired the suit in the mirror.

"That's because I spent the last year making sure it was perfect for you," Cadence's voice made both of them jump and look over to find Cadence standing by the door with a smirk on her face.

"Mom!" Flurry said in surprise as she scratched the back of her head and chuckled nervously. "What are you doing here?"

"You didn't think I left something so important without an alarm spell, did you?" Cadence replied. Flurry blushed as she took a few steps back while Cadence walked up to Twilight with a smile. "So, what do you think?" Twilight blushed as she looked at herself.

"How'd you get it so perfect?" Twilight asked.

"By very carefully using magic to get your exact measurements every chance I got," Cadence answered as she admired Twilight in a refitted version of her late husband's wedding suit.

"How'd you manage that?" Twilight asked as she looked at Cadence. "I would've felt magic around my body."

"Discord was more than happy to help," Cadence answered with a smirk.

"Really?" Twilight asked with a raised eyebrow before Discord appeared with an arm over Twilight's back.

"Now, why would you think I wouldn't be happy to help a friend?" Discord asked before vanishing again. Cadence and Flurry giggled as Twilight rolled her eyes with a shake of her head.

"Discord made it easy for me to take measurements every time I visited over the last year," Cadence explained as she admired Twilight all over. Twilight blushed as she stood there.

"Isn't it bad luck to see the bride before the altar?" Twilight protested.

"That only counts for the groom," Flurry answered as she walked up. "And there's no groom here." Twilight blushed.

"She has a point," Cadence observed. "Even so, I'm glad I got a chance to see my efforts paid off." Cadence smiled as she admired Twilight in her wedding outfit. Twilight stood tall and proud in the suit her brother used for his special day before Cadence surprised her with a peck on the cheek. "Let's get them packed up and back to the cottage." Discord suddenly appeared by Cadence's dress with a smiled on his face.

"Allow me!" Discord proclaimed as he readied to snap his claws.

"Discord!" Cadence barked. "If anything happens to these outfits, so help me-"

"My dear, Cadence," Discord interjected. "I'm surprised after all these years; you still don't trust me to handle something as precious as this." He snapped his fingers, and they all found themselves back at Celestia and Luna's cottage. The outfits were hanging neatly on-air while securely sealed in plastic wrap to protect them from the elements. "Honestly, I may be the spirit of disharmony, but I know how to take care of important items."

"Like you did with Cosy Glow, Queen Chrysalis, and Tirek?" Flurry countered with a smirk on her face.

"Now, I had that completely under control," Discord defended himself. "I just underestimated their ability to put their differences aside and work together."

"And all of Equestria nearly got destroyed by the Windigoes because of it," Cadence observed.

"But if it weren't for Twilight and her teachings, Equestria wouldn't have united and come out stronger because of it," Discord defended himself again. "The outcome of the ordeal was one-hundred percent intended; the details just got a little out of control, is all."

"Now, leave him alone, girls," Twilight interjected with a smile. "It's true, Discord does have his faults, but so do us all. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be standing here now, getting ready for the biggest day of our lives."

"The biggest day?" Discord asked with a smirk.

"Okay, one of the biggest," Twilight giggled.

"Are you four too invested in talking, or are you all ready for lunch?" Celestia called out from around the corner with a proud smile on her face.
