Heart's Desire

Chapter 1: Moving

Star Shadow and her two elder sisters Firebrand and Snowflake Obsidian were packing the last of their belongings for their move to Ponyville. The movers we're going to be there early in the morning.

Snowflake was the oldest of the three bat ponies, Firebrand was sixteen Star Shadow being the youngest at fifteen. She looked up and asked her seventeen-year-old sister Snowflake, "Do you think that the other ponies at our new school will like us?"

With a gentle voice that seemed like it belonged to somepony much older replied from the far side of the room, "They will have to get used to us being there, but they will I'm sure of it. I heard a unicorn say at the street market that the "Princess of Friendship" lives there....... that'll be Princess Twilight Sparkle. If I recall the element bearers live there too, so it'll be easy to make friends. There is nothing to worry about silly filly."

Star Shadow stuck her tongue out and crossed her eyes, Firebrand had been observing from the closet bringing down smaller boxes of miscellaneous items laughed as Snowflake whipped around and chucked a pillow at her youngest sister! These sisters had their moments of disagreement like all ponies, but when it came to protecting the youngest none was so fierce as Snowflake herself. They finally finished packing up their room, and trotted down the stairs to see that their parents had already finished; the packing only took a whole week but it was now done. Upon deciding where to eat they bundled up because Fall was creeping in. they walked toward a diner that served the best hay burgers in town. when they arrived they sat down and placed their order.

their food arrived and they munched for a while in silence, it was broken by Star Shadow asking, "What time is our train tomorrow?"

Their mother replied, "6:00 AM darling, you'll be able to sleep during the ride." They finished the burgers and then their father ordered milkshakes.

6 A.M. came too quickly for the girls and they rolled out of bed and quickly freshened up for the day. It was a chaotic scramble to the boarding dock for the train; they made it there with just three minutes to spare.

They boarded and Star Shadow crashed and was asleep once they were in their assigned stateroom. The ride was uneventful, to say the least. Firebrand fell asleep as well an hour into the ride; Snowflake rattled off facts about Ponyville she had learned. They arrived at the new house as the movers just getting there themselves. The unpacking was easy and the organization was a bear to deal with considering they had more house to work with, but by great luck they got it done by dinner time with a tad left to the next day.

Chapter 2: First Impressions

The girls scrambled for their first day at their new school, they wanted to look their best since first impressions were important. Firebrand was always up early and down before anypony else and she hollered from the kitchen, "Snowflake! Star Shadow get down here we're gonna be late!" Snowflake rolled her eyes as she cantered down the stairs and Star Shadow hadn't budged. She was nervously brushing her mane, when they arrived she had noticed several cute stallions around Ponyville, would any of them be at their school?

"Pull yourself together, you're still young..........." her thoughts were interrupted by a massive amount of bass from two houses down, from the other side of their house she heard a cello and somepony viola. Why in Celestia's name was she stuck between two spectrums of music?

"I swear Star if you don't get down here I'll drag you down myself!"

"Firebrand be patient, I'm sure she's coming."

"Yes mother." Firebrand sounded annoyed. Firebrand finally appeared and they hastily ate breakfast and flew to school. Star Shadow was jealous of Snowflake, her landings were amazing to say the least, she was able to glide into her landings at a forty-five degree leans. Firebrand could always hit the ground performing a three hundred sixty degree flat spin without messing up her mane.

Star Shadow was a tad klutzy with her landings, they were never smooth. "For a bat pony you're sure landing rough! What's wrong are your eyes crossed like Derpy's over there?"

Snowflake and Firebrand whipped around toward the speaker about the same time two farm ponies appeared, one was orange with a blonde braid, the other was a tall muscular stallion with a blonde mane as well; he stood taller than most of the stallions his age.

"You leave her alone Staccato or else!"

"Or else what Big Macintosh? You going to hit a lady, what will Granny Smith say?" The one called Big Mac glared, before he could retort a blinding white and red blur flew past him and collided with the one called Staccato. The orange earth leapt in to pull Snowflake off.

"Applejack you're a witness this crazy pony tried to kill me!!"

"Ah can't say ah blame her.......you just insulted her younger sister, if somepony insulted Big Mac I'd clobber em too."

Staccato turned and stormed off dragging a gray mare with a black mane behind her, "Come on Octavia, let's leave the losers." As they trotted off Snowflake whipped around eyes red with fury. Applejack backed away, and Big Mac stepped up and a very mellow tone said:

"Nope" Snowflake blinked, he just used more than one word sentences. "You need to can yourself before you do something stupid." Snowflake just realized how big he was, she stood just below his shoulder, and see felt small, even when Star Shadow stood to him she looked like a little foal.

They all went their separate ways, but when they gathered together the two farm ponies from earlier were in their class along with Staccato and Octavia, the latter was sitting with a white unicorn with a blue mane. Big Mac was talking with Cheerilee a pink earth pony with a lighter dual tone pink mane and Sugar Belle another pink mare but her mane was a deep royal purple.

Star Shadow couldn't help but stare at Big Mac, Firebrand had noticed and leaned over; "Go talk to him sis, you know you want to do it." Star Shadow wasn't a flirt, but she was too shy to talk to stallions. Firebrand was confident in herself and did it all the time........for a mare as grouchy as she was stallions chased her . Snowflake was more mild, she kept to herself and kinda ignored stallions altogether: what was Star to do? She had no clue on how to talk to stallions?

Class began and all Star Shadow managed to do was get called out for doodling. Her sisters leaned in to see what she had been sketching, Firebrand almost exploded with laughter; Star had sketched Big Mac's Cutie Mark the whole time.

During lunch period, Firebrand managed to weasel her way into a group of ponies that were of the musical types, that included Octavia, Vinyl, Lyra & Beauty Brass. Star Shadow sat alone trying to avoid Staccato. Snowflake sat across the room with a purple unicorn discussing philosophy. Staccato walked up bit down on her ear and pulled her to the floor, she yelled and before her sisters could reach her Big Mac who never hit anypony threw his body mass into Staccato and sent sliding on the floor. Applejack froze , her brother never got this mad before; sweet Celestia he sure was scary.

"Staccato Melody, of you get near her again I'll make you wish you hadn't!" Staccato nodded stood and quickly walked off.......okay she limped off having twisted her back left hoof at impact.

Star Shadow could only go, "Hhmm" in muttering her thanks. Snowflake and Firebrand glared in the direction Staccato went.

The rest of the day was spent with the Apple siblings, and meeting other ponies who went to school there.

Chapter 3: Crushing

The sisters had attended Ponyville High for a few weeks now, six to be exact. Star Shadow's grade were doing well except physical education. She didn't have the strength or speed to keep up. She was feeling down and discouraged when a shadow fell across her face and she turned her head a saw a red mass; looking up she saw Big Mac looking down at her. "What's bothering you sugar cube?" Taken aback, Big Mac was one of the most popular stallions in the school and he was taking time to talk to her.she almost shut down and said nothing because she felt a tad useless and she was also very shy around him. She had the chance to get his attention an she better not lose it!

"It's nothing big, it's that most mares my age in this class are stronger, faster and even more agile.........Rainbow Dash makes me look like a slug! I don't even have that much muscle strength to show. I'm feeling just l.......useless! I can't believe I just told all of this!"

"Most ponies think they're strong when they mask what's bothering them, the way I see it true strength shows when you share your heart. You have your own strength, I've seen how you treat younger ponies and foals in town, you're very gentle with em, Sugar Belle and Cheerilee agree. No matter what, you're never useless." The conversation was deep, and Big Mac sat and listened; and an occasional comment or two left his lips.

Star Shadow was feeling a ton better that afternoon until Staccato approached her at her locker, "Big Mag is gonna be mine! Sugar Belle and Cheerilee think they can take him but guess what? They're not, and not even you can stop me.

School let out and as the three sisters walked home, Star Shadow was silent.

She was coming to he realization that she had a crush on Big Mac! The following days and weeks any time Big Mac spoke to her all she manage was a , "Mhmm".

Chapter 4: Rivals

Big Mac had now noticed that four mare essentially were pursuing him, he felt like hunted prey! Granted the mares were cute, there was the local gal Cheerilee and that mare from up north, Sugar Belle. He also had Staccato from Canterlot and that new girl from out of town who just moved in, Star Shadow; he had no shortage in mares to pick from but he was beginning to stress as the first school dance of the year as coming up and he didn't have a date yet.

His thoughts were interrupted by Applejack, "Big Mac, Rarity is gonna kill me! I was just asked by Trenderhoof, she's been trying to get his attention for months! What am I going to do?"

"Nothing, just do it for one night and she can have him. My problem is who to ask? I got Cheerilee, Sugar Belle, Staccato & Star Shadow" he was cut off by Granny Smith who walked in.

"Take Staccato off yet list Big Macintosh, that lass is rude, arrogant, and from what I heard at the PTA meeting she's a bully! For the past two years you took Cheerilee one year as a date to a school dance and the same goes for that Sugar Belle. Why don't you ask that Are Shadow what's the worst that can happen?"

"She says no?" Grammy Smith face hoofed and groaned, Applejack smacked her head onto the table top:

"Wrong answer, try again bro. I beg you let it be a right answer?"

"She's already taken?" Applejack quickly stood and walked out laughing. Granny Smith took over at this point.

"Listen Big Mac! If she says no then you're still at square one so you better ask her!" When she left Big Mac walked over to the home of Star Shadow.

When he got there he knocked, Star Shadow opened and stared blankly for a moment before inviting him in. He made his question known before he wimped out and left. She said yes but it was barely audible but it was a yes.

Her sisters gently teased her for being so quiet, a whole lot like Fluttershy. With the dance three months away she practiced and got dance lessons. She felt so lucky, a date with Big Mac!

The next day Big Mac saw all four mares having a heated discussion, they all thought that Big Mac should've asked them over the other; over the course of the day and the entire week they'd try various ways to get him to change his mind. Star Shadow didn't know how a rivalry was supposed to work. So, she she stayed back and watch the others act in ways that were get most stallions attention and they tried baking and various ways of getting his attention. Star Shadow was just be her usual shy self and trying to stay away from Staccato.

In the end, Big Mac stayed with his decision of Star Shadow being his date.

Chapter 5: Spring Dance

It was a hot humid day for Spring, not a breeze stirred and Star Shadow and her sisters were in class. Thank Celestia it was near the end!

"One last note class before you leave, the annual Spring Dance will be on March fifteenth at the Melody Dance Studio starting at 5 P.M. sharp. Also don't forget to bring a dessert and a you young stallions better start asking the fine young mares to be your date!"

The students filed out of the room and began chatting. Star Shadow hoped Big Mac would ask her, Big Mac on the other hoof wanted to ask her but was getting cold hooves. "Go on Big Mac ask her!" Hissed Applejack to her brother. Cheerilee and Sugar Belle gently prodded him forward. They knew he had developed some feelings for the bat pony; being the ponies they were they didn't want to stand in the way of gate. As Star so Shadow walked up looking for Snowflake. Firebrand joined them and muttering on how she didn't want nothing to do with the dance.

"Pardon me Big Mac, but have you seen Snowflake anywhere?"

"Eeyup" and he raised a hoof toward the school library. Cheerilee, Sugar Belle and Applejack looked at him and all three mares face-hoofed.

Why was Big Mac so shy around certain mares and then others he wouldn't stop talking?

The week before the dance Big Mac finally built up the courage to finally ask Star Shadow to be his date.

Big Mac slowly walked up the front door of the house where Star Shadow lived, why was he so nervous? He raised a hoof to knock when it swung openly suddenly and Star Shadow stood gawking.

"Big Mac what are you doing here? She asked shocked.

Big Mac sheepishly asked, "Will you be my date to the spring dance?"

Star Shadow stuttered until all she could manage was a very quiet and squeaky, "Hhmm" which only served as a yes. When she told her family Snowflake burst out:

"Finally!!! I thought he'd never ask." She was laughing so hard that she fell off the sofa she had been laying on. Snowflake and Firebrand hadn't been asked yet so they were planning on being home. A couple of days later Firebrand landed Zephyr Breeze, Fluttershy's brother as her date. Only one who wasn't lined up with a date was Snowflake herself. She didn't care all that much but she was going as a volunteer to help out during the event.

Three days later, the students were setting up the studio, Staccato and Snowflake were working in the kitchen. Everypony else were doing other chores for the event. "Uggg, I hate cleaning! I'm outta here, a mare of my class shouldn't be scrubbing dishes and sweeping!"

"Staccato your parents own the studio, and you should help, this is too much for one pony."

"Snowflake Obsidian, you and your family should just go back to Fillydelphia where you came from. I'm gone!" Staccato left and Obsidian was stuck trying to get all done. She failed to see the broom Staccato left laying on the floor.

"Shining Armor be a help and take those cups to the kitchen please?" The pony in question shrugged and levitated a stack of cups and walked off and noticed Big Mac snickering, rolling his eyes he kept walking. When he got to the kitchen he saw Staccato was gone and he hastily placed the cups as dishes went flying! He used his magic and caught them all.

Looking at the pony who lost hold of them was getting off the floor, mane soaked with sweat, white coat covered in dirt and seeming very stressed. "Snowflake, I don't know if you have a date yet and I would love to have you as my date to the dance this weekend. I know I waited really long but I was nervous that you'd say no." To his excitement she said yes.

After Staccato left, snowflake being left alone with all the washed the dishes as quickly as she dared. Crying from the stress she didn't see the broom Staccato left on the floor. Dishes went airborne as she hit floor, awaiting for the crash that never came. She looked up and saw Shining Armor had caught the dishes by his magic and set them on the table by the cups he brought in. Covered in sweat and dirt Snowflake was embarrassed that she was so Filthy and he was prestine white still.

"Snowflake, I don't know if you have a date yet and I would love to have you as my date to the dance this weekend. I know I waited really long but I was nervous that you'd say no." To his excitement she said yes.

Shining Armor's mind clicked, this was why Big Mac snickered! He was privy to him and Snowflake hooking up for the dance and Star Shadow planned this; she knew Staccato would leave Snowflake by herself so pairing them was easy. Snowflake realized the same thing and the both of them laughed loudly.

Chapter 6: The Big Night

The big night was finally here, the girls were getting ready and talking excitedly. "Snowflake I can't believe you got Shining Armor! That mare that had been flirting with was ticked!"

"Ain't that the truth Star, she was livid. Oh well, I landed a mane stylist, Zephyr will be here shortly to style our manes; and Shining Armor and Big Mac will be with him. The three stallions appeared on the door step, afraid to knock because they were fifteen minutes early. Big Mac stepped up and raised a hoof to knock and it swung open as his hoof went forward and colliding with the shocked face of Star Shadow's mother.

Big Mac completely embarrassed tried to help her up but he fell forward on top of her almost crushing her. Her husband who heard the commotion trotted into the living room and saw the seen before him. "I pray to Celestia that I didn't look like this when I came early for her back in my day." When all were re-situated and looking put together again the girls popped their heads out of their room. The three stallions were wondering how they were so lucky to have such cute dates tonight. Looking at the clock Zephyr quickly got to work. Big Mac followed our tried to follow Zephyr's instructions, but all he could manage was to brush all the tangles out her wavy mane and place a white Hibiscus flower. Zephyr had braided Firebrand's mane, it had looked perfect he didn't want to do too much.

Shining Armor tried to fix Snowflake's mane but it was a battle of magic and telekinesis between the two ponies but Snowflake won out in the end.

This whole time no pony noticed that twice during the skirmish between Snowflake and Shining Armor that Big Mac and Star almost nuzzled and but drew back feeling awkward; no pony noticed but Snowflake had caught the motions. It was a quarter till 6pm and the three couples went downstairs and posed for Crimson Rose the mother of the three most beautiful bat ponies in Equestria, their father Crimson Trail was watching from a recliner in the corner of the room. They left and began their walk to the dance studio. Big Mac so badly wanted to give Star a kiss but didn't dare because he had been taught behave better than some stallions who would kiss a mare of she wanted it or not! He knew of a couple from the upper crust who would. When they arrived at the studio their ears were blasted by an excessive amount of bass coming from the corner and there they saw their fellow schoolmate on a mixing table and with A laptop. Her partner Octavia was marching beat and tempo just fine. They were there because they provided the music. Staccato walked up and brushed and passed by Big Mac in way that was for a mare of her social class too brazen and a bit to seductive to be proper. Being bat ponies made the three sisters very light and graceful dancers. After awhile Big Mac had to excuse himself. Star talked to several ponies but went looking after Big Mac after and hour had passed.

She found him in a back hallway with Staccato looking like they were kissing and they were talking about something, but what she didn't see was Big Mac trying to push her away. She bolted and when she was outside wept, her heart felt like it was breaking. She heard hoof steps turning she saw Big Mac. "I know what you saw looked bad, really bad, but let me explain? What you saw was Staccato at first wanted a kiss but I told her no, then she was suggesting something and said I'd never get the courage to do it.........and how she saw that I was so, well drawn to ya and if your mad at me letting myself get into that situation so be it, but I didn't go looking for it; I wish it hadn't happened. I sorry that I hadn't pushed her harder." He stood and turned watched him leave. For a few moments she cried alone in the cool spring air under the stars. She heard more steps and she looked and it was Cheerilee and Sugar Belle, moaning she let them join her

Sugar Belle motioned with her hoof toward Cheerilee to do the talking, rolling her eyes Cheerilee began:

"Saw what happened. Big Mac had his choice in mares he could have asked any of us but he chose you! Why? Your personality is genuine, we saw how you looked at him from the day you arrived here. He kept glancing back at you, poor guy he told us how he felt about ya. We didn't want to hinder him so we tried to convince him to ask you to be his date. The first time he thought that he was in a dream so he asked ya again. He is one of the best hard working honest stallions in this town. Don't lose him now! If you do Staccato will rub it in your face for years. Go in and win him back, he's feeling right now like he lost a rare gem."

Star Shadow sat in silence for a few moments feeling those two hold her close like a sister gave her the courage to rise out of this puddle of self-pity and she trotted in to the studio once again. First pony that intercepted her path to Big Mac was Staccato.

"Star Shadow, heard you lost your date" she jabbed in a mocking tone, "face it, he to good for the likes of you! You should just leave and go back to Las Pegasus where you came from. There is nothing in this town for you, your just a part of a surplus population of pure ponies like us."

Star Shadow's sisters saw the whole interaction and charged but were stopped by Applejack and Big Mac. Big Mac glared but he said calmly, "Let Star fight this alone, it will be good for her self confidence and this is her fight now." Four ponies glared and the others watched in curiosity to see how this will unfold.

Star walked up to Staccato nose-to-nose and glared, "I am sick and tired of you treating me and my sisters like second class citizens! You think because of your social standing and money you can just walk all over us middle-class ponies like a throw rug? Lemme tell ya, one day you'll look up in a time of need and you'll be alone with no pony to share your burden. Your younger sister is way nicer than you by a long shot! She has more true friends than you'll have at this rate!" Out of breath Star Shadow stepped a half step back to breath.

"Bitch!" Staccato screamed and raised a hoof to hit Star who cowered when realizing she yelled at a pony who was taller and out weighed her by a solid twenty pounds.

As the hoof came forward a red blurry mass stood between her and Staccato. With a thud and a very deep oof Big Mac had the biggest shiner in all of Equestria!

"Staccato" he spoke while he issued a few hard jabs with his hoof, "Star and her sisters are more lady-like than you'll ever be! That is the reason why I chose Star over you, Cheerilee and Sugar Belle knew that and they took it with more grace than you!!" As Staccato stormed off, Star walked up to face Big Mac.

Looking into his eyes, she spoke gently, "I love you Big Mac, with all of my being and every fiber with every breath I take!" Big Mac wrapped his hoof around her and drew her close; he planted a gently kiss on her lips, no pony knew he could be so gentle.

Shining looked toward Vinyl & Octavia and cued them to play a soft musical number. The room watched Big Mac and Star Shadow dance slowly in time with the music. This was the biggest night in Star Shadow's life and she was happy, happy that she had found a stallion who respected and loved her for who she was.

Chapter 7: Courting

The couples left the dance that night and enjoyed the food spring night as they walked slowly. ”Big Mac" Star began,"we should let Granny Smith meet my folks, but I should warn you though; my mother is skilled in making ponies feel overly doted on."

"So does Granny Smith, how bout tomorrow at Sweet Apple Acres?"

"How about a neutral territory, how about the park?" She replied leaning her tired head on his shoulder. When they arrived home, the stallions went their separate ways. As she lay in her bed, her sisters chatted quietly since their parents were now asleep, "Wow! Star how does it feel to have your date go home with a shiner?"

"Oh hush, Firebrand, I didn't try to get him hurt. At least I know he was raised to protect those smaller than himself, even though you could by his demeanor. The way he stood up to Staccato was amazing. For just moving into this town, I'm surprised we found such good stallions; Zephyr is a little odd, but he has a good heart. However, Snowflake how did you manage to the older brother of the most adorable little unicorn, who just so happens to be the personal student of royalty?"

The next morning a family of bat ponies could be seen walking along the main thoroughfare of Ponyville. It was a beautiful crisp spring morning and little fillies and colts played in the fresh air. If you were a pegasus, you would've seen an orange beanie with a small propeller on it and the little colt was playing on an electric gaming device and his mother scolding him.

The bat ponies arrived first and set up a nice shady spot under some cherry blossom trees. The Apple family trotted up next and Big Mac and Star hugged. Zephyr showed up with his parents and dragging his shy sister behind him. Shining Armor arrived last with his family and trying to keep a little purple unicorn walking in a straight line.

As the families met each other Star and Big Mac laughed as the little unicorn named Twilight bounced around incessantly with a her nose in a book.

When everything news set they sat down to eat lunch. When lunch was finished and Star and Big Mac walked off a little ways to talk. Twilight being a curious little filly she asked as Star and Big Mac tussled in the grass after Star stole his Stetson, "what are they doing? Are the having sex?" At this point Granny Smith and all the parents put down the embarrassing photos, Shining Armor's parents realized that they'd have to monitor their young filly's reading for one as young as her she was an honorary student at the girls high school; and she had talked to Snowflake about philosophy a few times.

"No dear” replied Shining's mother Twilight Velvet, "They're just playing around." After a few hours being at the park and the families packed up the lunch baskets Shining Armor and Snowflake began searching for Twilight who had walked from this side just a few seconds ago. They found her curled up next to Star Shadow both were sound asleep and Big Mac stood over them like a sphinx over its pharaoh's tomb. Relieved Shining Armor and Big Mac hoof bumped. Shining Armor gently woke Twilight from her nap and Big Mac gently whispered in Star Shadow's ear, "Time to wake up babe" she stirred and looked around and saw that the little purple unicorn was staring at her.

She quizzically at the Big Mac and Shining Armor. Later that day Big Mac was telling Applejack about wanting to take Star for a three day weekend trip.

"Big Mac, I don't know how that'll turn out. Granny Smith I know would be fine with it but her parents I'm not so sure. If something were to happen, things can get out of hoof. Give sometime and let our families know each other better. That is just my opinion."

"You're right Applejack, I'll give it a few months. Before suggesting a trip."

The families spent time together l, those who were able participated in the "Running of the Leaves" in the fall. Big Mac gave it every once of speed he had, but Star being much lighter and managed to stay just a few feet ahead of him the whole. Shining Armor laughed at Big Mac and threw a taunt hoping to spur his friend on, "What's wrong big buddy getting out run by a mare......" His taunt was cut short when a white, black and red shot past them in a cloud of dust and leaves.

"As you were saying?" They both laughed, Zephyr caught up out of breath as Firebrand left him the leaves.

"Why in Celestia's name am I doing this!!! Why even did I bother trying to out run Firebrand!!" They all laughed as their marefriends booked it at top speed. Applejack joined them and laughed at all three of them. They were soon joined by a cyan pegasus named Rainbow Dash. The five of them watched as the bat ponies out distanced everypony else.

Chapter 8: A Wedding & A Surprise

Big Mac finally asked Star Shadow's parents if the two of them could go on a weekend trip. The parents said yes, not knowing that this would be a a starting point of a chain of events. Let's just the father knew because he could see the future and knew not to mess up the time current.

Big Mac took the train to a small village thirty miles outside of Ponyville, from there they hiked to the cabin a total distance of only eight miles. Seeing the cabin was well stocked. There were a few bottles of hard cider in the cabinets, he failed to see that he bottles were a hundred years old so they'll be strong enough to get you drunk with just one glass. They went upstairs and Big Mac swore, "Damn it! Granny didn't give the other keys to the other rooms. I've got one large king size bed, as long as we don't get to drunk things shouldn't happen."

"Our families know us Big Mac, nothing will happen." That evening they played a few board games and drank some of the cider. Big Mac had grilled some hay burgers that evening for their dinner and he wasn't a bad cook. It was around 11pm and they began to stumble toward the stairs for bed. They had drank two bottles were more drunk than they realized.
