“So…” Rumble began, laying on his side on the bed across from Button’s, looking over at him. “Did you have a good time?”

Button didn’t even really have to think about it. “Yeah. There were a few not great parts, but I was pretty much in my own personal heaven for ten straight hours.”

Rumble chuckled. “Absolutely nothing straight about what happened today.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Button waved him off. “And how was your day?”

Rumble rolled over onto his back, staring into the blank, beige ceiling. “Well I went shopping for food and stuff, but that was over in an hour. After that I just came right back and, uh, edged myself until you helped me out. Thanks again, by the way.”

Button shrugged. “It’s what I’m here for. And hey, if you ever need your dick sucked or an ass tapped, call me. I mean it. Absolutely no strings attached.”

Silence filled the room after he said this, and he was worried he had somehow crossed a line. He was about to take it back, say “Haha, just kidding!” when Rumble spoke up, almost too quiet to hear at first.

“What if… What if I want a few strings attached?”

Silence again, but this time the shoe was on the other hoof, and Button was struggling to come up with an appropriate response. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”

Rumble took a shaky breath. “I’m asking if you want to be my coltfriend, not just my best friend.”

Button was shocked. Not because he didn’t feel the same way and was surprised that Rumble had asked, but just because Rumble had been so adamantly against getting into anything more than lewd banter with him until today. He briefly considered the possibility that Rumble had been replaced by a changeling, but then figured that the chance of him being targeted by a stray love-starved drone a dozen years after that sort of thing had stopped being much of a problem was so low as to be entirely dismissed.

Then he realized that he hadn’t said anything for a while, and that Rumble was probably very quickly becoming a nervous wreck.

“Yes!” he yelled, completely accidentally. “I mean, uh, sorry. Yes, we can be coltfriends. Though on one condition.”

Rumble let out a breath that Button hoped he hadn’t been holding the whole time. “Yeah, what is it?”

“If we become coltfriends, you have to promise me that, if we break up, we are able to go back to just being friends. I don’t want any drama with exes, and I don’t want that to include my oldest friend. Got it?”

Rumble nodded. “Yeah, yes. Definitely. That sounds completely fair.”

For the fourth time in as many minutes, the room was silent, both afraid to make the first move in their new relationship.

Button decided to suck it up, getting up from his bed, turning off the lights, and hopping into Rumble’s.

“No funny business. I’m way too tired for any of that.”

Rumble nodded, too happy about the strong earth pony hooves that were now wrapped around him. “Good night, Butt.”

Button smiled wide and nuzzled into Rumble’s neck. “Night, Rumble.”

His last thought before drifting off to the dream realm was that he had a ton of stories to bring back to Ponyville already, and they were only on day one.
