When Celestia sent Twilight to Ponyville, she sent her there knowing that if all went well, then Nightmare Moon would be defeated. It didn't go well. Nightmare Moon was successful in her take-over of Equestria and the world, plunging land everywhere into a blissful eternal night, with Celestia being banished to the moon to boot. After years of ruling however, Nightmare Moon has to produce an heir to the throne.
