Once A Shadow - From the other side
Chapter 29 - Vigilante's Veil
Previous ChapterNext ChapterI woke up early, very early in fact. I had planned this of course, but noone else knew about it. I got out of bed, and opened a rusty trunk at the foot of the bed. Inside was some clothing, A leather cap, a trench coat and a dark grey shemagh to cover up my face, all of which I donned before leaving my room. I snuck downstairs over to the main room, to find Spitfire reading and Soarin snoozing in a chair opposite. To avoid being seen, I dashed across the doorway. I did so a little too fast, nearly knocking over a vase full of flowers on a nearby table. This noise caught Spitfire's attention, but only temporarily as she went back to her book seconds later. With a sigh of relief I continued though the Wonderbolts HQ and outside, careful not to disturb anyone that might still be awake.
Once I was outside, I flew up, looking for something or anything out of place. The sky was a nice dark black, with only street lamps to light the way to anyone that would be up at this time of night. Eventually I found what I was looking for, what seemed to be a group of 5 young colts surrounding a lone mare. They started beating up the mare, before I started swooping down towards them, completely unaware of the fate that was in store for them.
"Please, leave me alone!" The mare cried out, tears in her eyes.
"Aw, don't be like that, all want is a few bits, then we'll leave you alone. You can do that, can't you?" One of the attackers said with a menacing tone.
"But I don't have any money with me! I just got back from working at the Cloudiseum, I'm just a cleaner for Celestia's sake!"
"Well then, that's too bad. We're just gonna have to-" He said before turning towards me, having landed right in front of the rest of his crew.
"Leave her alone, or you answer to me." I said in a gruff voice.
"Well well, what do we have here? A wannabe hero coming to save the damsel in distress? I don't think so, take him down!"
I simply turned my head to the side a little before lunging at the first one, flipping him over and planting my right forehoof into his stomach. I then dashed over to the seond one and simply punched him straight in the chin, sending him backwards. The third one managed to throw a punch, to which I easily avoided before kicking him into a nearby wall. The fourth one went for a broken bottle on the ground, but befoer he could get it off the ground I had already crushed it and was standing on his hoof, before headbutting him. The last one started to back up, realising he wasn't about to win the fight. he turned around at started to bolt, but forgot that he was in a dead end alley and ended up planting himself on a wall.
The mare looked up, hearing that the fight was over, only to find 5 unconscious thugs and a note left in front of her, reading Try to sick to the main road, also call the guards over to lock them up. Yours sincerely, Armour Piercing. She clutched the note tight smiling before running out of the alley and finding the nearest guard. Above in the clouds, I took of the shemagh and smiled, before putting it back on and flying off to look for more trouble. Unfortunately before I could find some, I was tackled out of the sky by a yellow blur. This should be good. We landed on another cloud before I found out who it was, Sptifire (of course, only she could be so devious).
"Oh crud." I simply said.
She pulled the shemagh off my face. "What the hay are you doing, putting your identity at risk like this?" She said angrily.
I smiled nervously. "Helping ponies?"
She sighed. "Look, I don't mind that you're helping ponies, but this isn't the way to do it. If somepony finds out who you are, it could jeopardize us all. If that happens, then our whole organization could fall apart, and I won't let that happen just because somepony thinks he can make a difference by beating up a few street punks."
"Says the pony who's not supposed to be out here in the first place, little miss non-existant."
She smiled back. "Touche. Look, you can keep doing this if you want, but if something goes wrong, I don't want you dragging the rest of us down with you, got it?"
"Thanks. You've become much more agreeable these days, I swear you're going soft on me."
"Oh really? We'll see about that. Come one, let's go back and I'll show you."
"I'd like to see that." I said smiling, before taking off with her. "You know Soarin's starting to suspect me of being involved with the recent crime drop."
"Really? I wonder who it could be?" She said sarcastically as we flew back to the HQ. We arrived with a few hours of the night left, and entered the main hall. "Well, I'll go back to reading, you should get some sleep. Good night, Mr. crime fighter."
"Good night, Ms. non existant." With that, I headed back upstairs. I entered my room and was about was to get back into bed when I was tackled onto it. It was Crystal, with a rather aggresive look on her face.
"You said that you'd have some time for little old me, so here I am." I simply smiled and climbed into bed.
