Chapter 3: In Every Junkpile, There Is A Gem

Previous Chapter

Sunset and Fluttershy soon joined the rest of their friends out in the junkyard. The early morning air gently breezing against their skin. The former unicorn took in a deep breath as she surveyed the sights of the junkyard. Old, wrecked cars stacked on top of each other as far as the eye could see. Some were destroyed behind recognition, while others look like they were still able to drive.

The rest of her friends were already in the process of looking around the junkyard. Applejack and Rainbow Dash were busy digging through piles of scrap to uncover a few cars that, from a distance, looked like they would work. Rarity was basically doing the exact opposite, trying her best to not get herself dirty as she examined another car that looked in relatively good shape. Pinkie was nowhere to be seen, maybe off somewhere deeper in the towers of scrap.

"Um, I'm going to go see if I can find Pinkie and maybe help her look for a car." Fluttershy nodded as she started off in the direction of a row of cars off to the side.

"Let us know if you find anything!" Sunset called after her shy friend as she made her way towards Rarity, who was in the process of removing a piece of metal from the hood of the car she was looking at, "Here, let me give you a hand,"

"Oh, thank you darling" the fashionista smiled over at Sunset as they were able to drag the piece of metal off the hood, revealing the old muscle car beneath it, "I saw this as we exited the shop. I don't know why, but it seemed like it was calling too me, like it knew it was meant for me to use,"

Sunset got a better look at the car now that it was in the light of the early morning sun. While the body was a little rough, a few dents and sun damage to the paint, it looked fairly decent otherwise. "It seems to be a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle. It was quiet the heavy hitter back in the day," the flamed haired girl bent down in front of the grill and wiped off the center, revealing a SS logo in the center "Better still, it's an SS model,"

"What does SS stand for?" Rarity had knelt down next to Sunset to get a look at what she was looking at, seeing the logo in the middle of the grill.

"It stands for Super Sport. A more powerful version then the base model. usually coming with the huge 6.5 liter V8." Sunset was almost drooling as she showed her bit of knowledge on the muscle car.

"You girls find something?" Ranch called over to the pair as he was helping Applejack clear away some junk from what looked to be a pickup truck that had defiantly seen better days.

"I believe we can cross Rarity off the list. Found a Chevelle SS that's in pretty decent shape. Just needs a little body work and the necessary upgrades and it'll be ready for the streets." Sunset called back over to the former race car driver.

Ranch soon made his way over to the old muscle car as Rainbow came over and helped Applejack clear away the rest of the junk from the pickup "That's one of the more recent additions. Old guy had been trying to restore it for the past twenty years, but could never afford all the necessary parts. Called me up and I hauled it off for him" He nodded as he put his hand on the hood, running it over the faded paint. Even through all the rust, a faded blue could still be made out, showing it being the former color.

Sunset and Rarity nodded as Ranch told them the story behind the car. Rarity then turned her attention towards the car and, using her fashion expertise, was already envisioning what she could do to the car to bring it back to it's former glory. A smile broke out across her face as multiple ideas ran through her head "Oh yes, I can make this work,"

Sunset smiled, seeing the fashionista's enthusiasm behind working with the car "Hey, Sunset! Ah' think ah' found something!" Applejack called over to Sunset, who looked over to see the apple farmer waving for her to come over, and Rainbow standing there with her arms crossed.

"What'd you find AJ?" Sunset then made her way over while Rarity and Ranch were discussing somethings in regards to her new Chevelle.

"What'd ya think?" Applejack indicated back at the old pickup truck that she and Rainbow were working on uncovering. Sunset got a better look, and it defiantly looked to have seen better days. It was in much rougher shape then the Chevelle. The lower parts of the door was rusted through, rust had started eating into the rear wheel well. Dents perforated all along the body.

Sunset cocked an eyebrow as she looked at Applejack, who was beaming brightly "A 1970 Ford F-100? OK, given, yes, it's something that has your name written all over it. Exactly how would a pickup truck be made to compete in street racing?"

"Farmtruck," Was the only response Sunset got out of the apple farmer. The annoyed look on Rainbow's face told her that she didn't like the idea of having a pickup truck racing on their list.

"So, your saying that because Farmtruck has an old Chevrolet truck on the 405's list, that we should have one on ours?" Sunset wasn't really surprised that Applejack would want to use a truck, but she was hoping that she would've found one in better condition.

"Eeyup," AJ simply replied, mimicking her big brother's usual response and rubbing the Ford's rusty fender with a look of happiness etched onto her face.

Ranch then approached, and caught a look at the apple farmer's find. "Nice find, that will make a nice 'false security' taste to you list," He stated, having overheard the conversation. And there was a kernel of truth in all of this. Farmtruck and his partner and buddy AZN were masters of misdirection, as Farmtruck's... well, Farmtruck looked old but was bad fast under the hood. AZN had his own car that followed this trend, a 1966 VW Beetle he called the Dung Beetle. The Dung Beetle may look rusty and old, but it had a 1000hp turbo-charged engine that could easily smoke any victims that the pair 'reel in'.

Applejack's F-100 could have the same factor of surprise if a quick restoration job was done, but the engine was worked on the most. And given that she was such a big fan of Farmtruck, it made sense that she would want to be like him.

Obviously, Dash was not a fan of this idea. "You CANNOT be serious! If you take this against the 405, or even us, you're going to get smoked seven ways 'till Sunday!" She argued at the farmer, clearly not happy about the idea of a truck in their list.

"That's jus' the thing, Dash! They'll see the rusty body of this truck that be lulled into a false sense of security. And when it races, my opponent's jaws will hit the floor!" AJ argued back.

"Okay, that's enough!" Ranch stated, stepping in between the two girls, "You made a mighty fine choice here, Applejack. This car is going to need de-rusting, some new body panels and some upgrades to the engine, but I think we have a sleeper on our hands." AJ just beamed as Ranch marked the pickup with a tiny red flag, so that the wreck would be easy to find in the whole junkpile. He then did the same with the Chevelle that Rarity found.

Sunset was watching as the ex-NASCAR driver marked the cars that were to be saved and smiled inside. Not only were they saving pieces of automotive history, but they would get to drive them against the best street racers in America! She could see Rarity and AJ racing the 405 in her mind now.

Of course, she was snapped out of her daydream by Twilight. "Hey, girls!! We found some more!!" She cried out, waving a hand in the air, beckoning all four of her friends and Ranch to follow. And when they got to where they were going, all of them saw something amazing.

There was not one, not two, but THREE full-blown muscle cars that had been pulled clear of the nearby pile. Well, only two of them were muscle cars, as the third looked more like a late-60s sedan. But all of them were covered with rust, whatever paint was left had faded and at least 1 body panel was missing on each car.

Sunset got a good look at all three cars and judging by the style of the car, she was quick to make the identifications. "Now, these are some nice cars. That car on the left, that's a 1968 Chevrolet Impala. An old classic from Chevy," She stated, as he popped the rusty hood of the Impala, "It gets better! Looks like this one has the 427-cubic V8. When it was new, it could put out at least 425 horsepower,"

Once those words were out of Sunset's mouth, Dash immediately rushed up to the Chevy and latched onto the massive hood of the car. "This one is mine! No-one else is having it!" She immediately stated, clinging to her chosen car.

"Well, if no-one wants it, that's fine," Sunset stated, about giggling at Dash's eagerness over her chosen ride. She then turned to Twilight and asked, "Do you want the Impala?" To which Twilight immediately shook her head. So, Dash would get to keep the 427 Impala.

As for the other two cars, they were easily identified. The car in the middle of the three was identified as a 1971 Oldsmobile 442, a classic muscle car that did some time in the NASCAR racing scene. Hell, even legend Richard Petty once drove an Oldsmobile. Sunset thought that this would be the perfect car for Ranch, until the mechanic explained that he already had a car that he could create into a racer worthy of the 405. So, Sunset took the 442 for herself. And the final car in the three, was a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the star ride of the movie series Smokey and the Bandit. The faded image of the legendary Firebird decal was still clearly etched into the hood. This ride was given to Twilight, as she had a thing for cars with history behind them.

Ranch remarked that each of the cars would need some serious derusting and would need to have some parts replaced, but they were in an okay shape. Once again, he marked each of the cars with a flag so that they could come back for them later.

It was as he was setting his flag on the Pontiac when Pinkie Pie's voice cried out for them. "GIRLS!!!!!! GET A LOOK AT THIS!!!!!!" Immediately, the entire group rushed over. What they saw was a massive junkpile, with Pinkie somehow standing on the top of the entire thing.

Wilder just looked up, his face showing a clear mix of confusion and awe. "How did she get up there?"

"It's Pinkie, don't question it," Twilight immediately answered him, not wanting to have him trying to figure out the pink party planner. Wilder took heed to her advise and just nodded.

He was lucky that he didn't question it, as seconds later, Pinkie dived into the pile, disappeared into the hulks of broken machinery. Only seconds later, she hopped out of the pile right at the ground (somehow only covered in grime and no cuts from the sharp and rusted metal), pushing a seriously banged up sedan out of it.

Sunset immediately identified the car. "Wow, a 1984 Ford Thunderbird! It may be a luxury car, but don't let that fool you. This thing has a chassis similar to the one seen on the Fox Body Mustang, like the Death Trap that Chuck drives. Also, this one must have the 5.0 liter Winsor V8 engine, pushing out 140 horsepower when it was new,"

Wilder just smiled and stated, "What's even more special, is that my dad used to have one of these. Every time it went wrong, we would fix it together and drive it around town. Great job bringing back those memories,"

"So, you can fix this?" Dash remarked. She did have a point, as the T-Bird Pinkie found was definitely the worst-for-wear of the bunch. Many panels were missing from the car, it was completely covered in rust and even had a wheel missing.

The mechanic just ran his hand over the rushed hood of the Ford and sighed, "Well, the bodywork is rusted to high heaven and some panels are missing. One of the wheels is missing too and even the smallest bolts are at the end of their lives. But if it means restoring this piece of automotive history, then yes,"

All of the girls the got together in a celebratory group hug, with Rarity doing her best to distance herself from the dirty Pinkie. Finally, they all had their cars. All they needed to do was restore and turn them into road-tearing street racing beasts. But when that though entered her head, Fluttershy immediately froze.

"Uhh, girls?" She timidly spoke, catching the attention of the celebrating Rainbooms, "I don't mean to spoil the celebration, but we don't know anything about restoring or working cars,"

This caused the others to immediately stop, Cause Flutters was right. They had forgotten about their lack of knowledge in the mechanics department. All they knew about cars came from the show itself, and even still it didn't reveal anything. They realized how difficult it would be to even get started.

Thankfully, Ranch already knew this and stepped in. "No need to worry. I'll call in a few favors and friends and I'll have these cars up to scratch in no time!"

All of the girls let out a sigh of relief. But that changed when Ranch then said, "I just need your help for one little thing..."

It seemed like it had taken the whole rest of the day, once the sun had begun to set over the horizon. It had taken them the whole rest of the day to get all of their chosen cars out of the junk and back to the garage. While the Chevelle and the other cars that still had all their wheels were quite easy, it was the wrecked Thunderbird that gave everyone the most trouble. The missing wheel and all the rusted metal made the car very difficult and dangerous to push. By the time that the car had only been moved 7 feet, all of the rusted metal had cut the girls pretty badly. Thankfully, one of the crane drivers that worked at the yard arrived only a few minutes ago used a crane to help get the rusted car where they needed it. And they were done.

Despite offering to help, Ranch waved it off. He said that he was getting all the help he needed from his other buddies. All he did tell the girls to do was to wait until he contacted them again to say that his work was finished. And with that, they all left him too it.

Once he was finished, they would have the cars...
