“Happy Birthday to me” I mumbled under my breath walking down the Ponyville streets.
Here I was, today was my birthday. One year older for Allium. I wasn’t quite as excited as normal. You see, most of my friends had been out of town for the week. “Some important royal business.” or whatever Twilight said. She didn’t really want me to have to spend my birthday with something that wasn’t going to be any fun, so she didn’t invite me to come with. I was pretty bummed out about that, a bit mad too. At Least Pinkie was still around. She was invited but she decided to stay because she “Didn’t want me to have a lonely birthday.” Such is the reason I was walking to Sugarcube Corner today, Pinkie planned a party just for me and her. I’m excited for it, but seriously, it’s pretty damn cold out, early spring sucks. Nonetheless, here I was.
The streets were rather calm today, there didn't seem to be many foals out, or ponies in general really. Everypony must be bundled up inside, who wants to be out when it’s cold out anyway. I kept making my way through the center of Ponyville, until I was interrupted by a familiar voice
“Hey Allium, happy birthday! What are you doing out so early?”
I looked over begrudgingly, not wanting to be bothered before I realized it was Sweetie Belle. I gave a big smile and opened my mouth “Oh hey Sweetie, how’s it going. I’m heading to Sugarcube Corner, hanging out with Pinkie, probably going to have some cake and stuff”
“That sounds great! Oh, could you save a slice of cake for Scootaloo, Applebloom, and me? Anyway, here, we made this for you, I was going to drop it off at your house before I met up with them. But I ran into you first.”
“Thanks, uh sure I’ll save the three of you each a slice, Not like I could eat a whole cake by myself. Pinkie on the other hoof. Anyway, thanks, I’ll catch you around.” I said wide eyed as I took the envelope from sweetie. I politely took off and started flying just above the ground as continued on my way towards Sugarcube corner. I opened up the envelope and blushed. “To our favorite adult friend and honorary crusader.” inside it read “Happy Birthday Allium, congrats on another year, and thanks for always helping us out, from Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, and Applebloom.” There was also a drawing on the front. It was a bit crude but you could tell it was a drawing of the three of them and myself. It was rather cute in all actuality, and it warmed my heart. Then it occurred to me how silly it was that three of my closest friends are relatively young fillies. Guess I am just a child at heart. Anyway, I finally arrived at Sugarcube corner and before I could even knock on the door, it was flung open. I was quickly dragged in and pinned to the ground before I could even react.
“Happy Birthday Allium! Are you ready for your party!”
“Yes Pinkie, of course I’m ready, that’s why I showed up. What’s first on the agenda?” I said with a hint of grumpiness as Pinkie moved off of me and I got up.
“Wellllll I’ve got quite a few things planned for us. First of all there’s…”
“Pinkie, I don’t mean to be a bummer, but could we keep it a bit simple, I don’t want it to get to out of hoof.” I said with a bit of melancholy. It felt weird that it would be just me and her today. While I never had a ton of friends, it was always a bit livelier than this.
“Ok, but turn that frown upside down, how about we start with a game of checkers, then we can take a big birthday picture and afterwards I’ll give you your cake! That’s sure to cheer you up.” Pinkie said absolutely beaming from ear to ear.
I couldn’t stop my forced smile from turning into a genuine one. Her enthusiasm was infectious. Maybe today will be a good day, Afterall Pinkie is one of my best friends. I thought briefly that, yes it would be nice to have some fun with her today, before I replied, “Yeah Pinkie that does sound wonderful, let’s get started.”
From this point on Pinkie brought out the checkers board and some pop. We sat down across from each other and played a few games, laughing and chatting the whole time. In the end the record was 3 me, 2 Pinkie, but it was a great time. I got a bit riled up when she told me it was time to take a photo. I stood up and mussed up my hair a bit before pinkie walked over to my side.
“Allium, are you ready!? Happy Birthday, wait for it, now smile!” Pinkie said, throwing her arms around my neck in a tight hug as I blushed and smiled at the camera. The flash went off and I looked about trying to ignore the little spots that get in your eyes when you look at bright lights. As Pinkie broke the hug, my blush started to subside and I looked at her and said “Can we have the cake now?”
“Just a second silly, we have to look at the picture first.” Pinkie said as she grabbed the photo and brought it over to me. We both looked over it, it was a decent enough looking picture, I was blushing from the unexpected hug, but nonetheless I liked it. I gave Pinkie a small nod and she set it back down.
“I hope you're ready Allium, I worked hard and baked this cake especially for you! Close your eyes while I go get it!” Pinkie demanded in a very energetic tone.
I awkwardly closed my eyes and compiled. In the darkness, I took a deep breath first through my mouth and then through my nose. I could hear the soft clopping noise of Pinkies hoofsteps and I could also smell something wonderful. A sweet, gentle smell made its way to me. “That must be my cake.” I muttered under my breath excitedly, as I basked in the glory of the smell.
“It’s a chocolate vanilla swirl cake with a vanilla lemon frosting. It’s almost ready, One second.... Now open your eyes!” Pinkie shouted.
My mouth started to water upon hearing the flavor, and I opened my eyes in a jubilant fashion but was stunned by what I saw. The cake was shaped like a hoof. It was a rather large cake, but it was shaped like and frosted to resemble a pony’s hoof. I was absolutely mortified at this and did my best to not try to show my fear. Why did Pinkie bake my cake into the shape of a hoof? Did she know?
“Pinkie… Why does the cake look like somepony’s hoof?” I asked, trying my best to hide my fear.
“Don’t act like you don’t know silly. You know why your cake is shaped like that. Don’t you like it?” Pinkie asked with an enthusiastic inquisitiveness.
“Y-yeah I like it. So, you know?”
“Of course, I know! Practically everypony knows that you like hooves!” Pinkie said, still maintaining a veneer of energy.
“Why didn’t anypony say anything?” I asked looking away and blushing.
“It’s not like you were harming anypony. I mean how couldn’t we notice anytime somepony got a hoof rub at the spa. Or Celestia forbid anytime somepony was wearing socks or especially when they took them off. You’d always be looking over and pretending you weren’t. You also looked like a cherry tomato. You were so embarrassed. Nopony wanted to embarrass you so we never said anything.”
“Oh, wow.” I muttered blushing and wanting to crawl in a hole and die. I could barely believe Pinkie that my love for hooves was that obvious.
“Don’t worry about it! Anyway… I already talked to her about this, whose idea do you think it was? We already worked everything out together so there's no need to be embarrassed Allium. Just enjoy yourself!”
“Alright Pinkie, I guess if she agreed then it's alright. Let's enjoy the day then.” I said smiling a bit and looking at the cake with tears in my eyes. I was surprised how thoughtful it was that she would plan this out with Pinkie. I wiped the tears out and looked back at Pinkie and asked.
“Could I get a slice please?” I asked with a bit of a smile. I watched as Pinkie deftly cut the cake and presented both me and herself with a slice of the hoof shaped delicacy. I quickly wasted no time and put my utensil into the slice taking a bite and savoring the melding flavor of chocolate vanilla and a hint of lemon. After talking a bit more and finishing the slice, I looked at Pinkie and exclaimed with a big smile “It’s great Pinkie thanks.”
I watched a sly smile form on her face throughout her reply “That’s great Allium! Are you ready to have some more fun!? How about you try some cake from the inspiration?”
I looked at her in confusion “Huh, what’s that supposed to mean”
“Let me show you!” Pinkie shouted with an extreme amount of energy. She quickly grabbed the cake and set it on the floor. I could only watch on as she stepped in the cake with her hind hooves smearing it all over, before she jumped onto her bed back first, not dropping even a single crumb of the cake now caked on her hooves.
“See Allium! I told you we already planned this all out, aren’t you hungry, come on have some more cake.”
“From your hooves?” I asked with a mixture of excitable curiosity and anxiety.
“Of course, silly, what do you think I meant, the cake from the floor? I know you're excited for it, now come on!” Pinkie replied brimming with confidence.
I stood there for just a second steeling my resolve. I approached Pinkie's bed and looked over her, her hooves sticking up towards my face. I looked at them noting all of the frosting and cake that has now coated her hooves. I took a deep breath enjoying the sweet smell of cake, before I brought my face to her hoof and took a gentle lick. I enjoyed the subtle lemony flavor and took a longer more passionate lick trying to reach the soft flesh of her hoof. Ultimately, I just got a big mouthful of cake and frosting. I slowly chewed it down and swallowed it. Eating it off her hoof made it even tastier. The potent flavor of the chocolate vanilla cake kept me motivated to keep going and on my third wholehearted lick I finally reached her hoof. Pinkie pulled her hoof back just a bit at the sensation of my tongue caressing her hoof. The taste of the cake next to her skin was just a bit different, a tad saltier. I supposed that her hooves must be sweating just a bit under all the cake and frosting. She was warm to the touch, and her taste was quite pleasant. I continued to lap at her like an artist making each lick of the tongue with purpose as to please Pinkie. I didn’t respond as I continued out and left Sugarcube Corner. I took a small glance at the cake and continued until I was back out on the streets of Ponyville. I took a deep breath of the still air and looked around as my breath created a small fog in the air.
“Ah, It’s still so empty out. I guess I’ll just head home, it really was a long day.”
As I made my way back to my humble abode, it finally struck me when I reminisced about the cake.
“Damn! I was supposed to bring Sweetie and them a slice.” I groaned as I stood there astonished by my idiocy. I forgot to ask Pinkie to save a slice of cake for the fillies. Couldn’t do anything about that now since Pinkie stepped in the cake. One more thought popped into my head as I continued my walk home. “They're going to kill me when they found out I forgot the cake.”
