Chapter 13: Friday The 13th's Full Moon. (P.O.V Switch, Monarch.)

"What should I look for once I arrive?" I ask the Princess who's name escaped me.

"A large arch marked by the crescent moon." A dark blue one said as she flew in through a balcony. "'Tis been a millenia, Monarch."

"Luna, a millenia too long," I folded my hands. "You still owe me,"

"We haven't forgotten what thou hast done for us."

"Do you really still talk like that, beautiful?"

"Our.. er, my apologies, Monarch. It's been dreadful boring, up here." She banged on her head.

"I know the feeling," I stand up and walk over to her, wrapping my arms around her I kiss her cheek.

"Whoa, lover boy." Cress's voice sounded in my head, but I ignored him.

"So I take it we'll be working together again," She nodded. "Good, like old times."

She smiled and blushed. "Like old times." She leaned in and kissed me, after a few seconds she broke the blissful union and smiled.

"Exactly like old times." I laughed, and looked at the white Princess. "Celestia, will you be joining us, this time?"

"No Monarch, not this time." She turned away and pouted.

"Shame,"

"Princess?," The purple one seemed confused as she looked to her mentor.

"Luna, shall we take our leave?"

"Yes, Monarch we have some catching up to do." Luna smiled and we flew up and out the balcony.

"Good, he's gone. I had forgotten how much I hate him," I huff.

"Princess, what just happened, that couldn't have been Cress." Twilight asked me still confused.

"My past has come back to haunt me once again. Monarch was a ronin warrior, traveling over Equestria and the surrounding countries, cutting down anypony in his way, Starswirl thought that if Monarch continued on this path he would eventually kill somepony important. So I sent the entire Solar Guard, to bring him to answer for his crimes. I lost many a good stallion that day, until he gave himself up to White Knight,"

"My great grandfather?" Twilight seemed suprised.

"Three times removed."

"But, why would he surrender, if what you said is true Princess, he coulda easily obliterated 'em, no offense Twi." Applejack posed a good question.

"That may have been true, if he wasn't honorbound."

"Honorbound?" Rarity seemed questioning.

"He lost the duel, and therefore he had a right to challenge for redemtion, but Monarch knew he could not defeat White Knight in his current state of mind, conflicted, distracted. So he agreed to return with Knight to the castle," It was uneasing to recall something I chose to forget. "Monarch welcomed his punishment with open arms."

"Punishment," Young Fluttershy stepped back and bit her finger.

"Harboring the souls of those he had killed."

"You mean you used the soul transfer on him, that's dangerous." For the first time my student had questioned my authority.

"For somepony who's mind isn't strong." I sat down in the armchair. "He had proven that he could handle the stress, without saying one word, he just smiled. 'I welcome the company' he said. I admit he had quite the charm about him, Luna seemed to notice as well. Shortly after he applied at the Solunar Academy, and proved himself very capable of strategic adaptation. He rose through the ranks rather quickly until he stood captain of the Lunar Guard, and invoked his right to rematch."

"The duel of day and night," Twilight was dumbfounded.

"I see your constant study hasn't failed you,"

"Naturally." She smiled and her expression returned to serious.

"As you may know White Knight won that bout, but just barely. Sadly that victory meant losing the most powerful of allies. Disgraced Monarch left not to be seen again for months." I sighed. "Luna had seemed obsessed with finding him and left the castle to search, Leaving Starswirl and I to worry, after a week she hadn't come back and Starswirl told me to go looking for her, he said 'I can keep things running for a few days.' " I look out the window and point to the sun and flick it behind the horizon.

"Um, not to be rude, but," The timid pegasus stammered.

"Yes, what is it Dear?"

"Well, um I'm confused, so he had all those ponies in his head?"

"Yes,"

"And, he just ran away?"

"Yes, he did."

"Why?"

"He was disgraced, dishonored, he felt useless." Applejack took the words out of my mouth. "The only way to prove his worth to himself was to duel the greatest swordsponies he knew, but I just thought that was a legend."

"Correct,"

"THE LEGEND OF THE SWORD MASTER. States that he challenged many foes defeating each in single combat, and after each one passed their spirits haunted him, honing his skills." Applejack's description was eerily exact. "And one day he found a beautiful princess, and they were wed, but the ceremony was interupted by a challenge from the Princess' brother. Even the Sword Master's intense training could not help him against the swordsponyship of the Prince, and he was killed releasing the warrior's accumulated spirits, that about right Princess?"

"Yes it is," I replied shocked.

"Thought so." She responded.

"Well, that explains a lot, actually." Twilight who was pulling out her mane earlier paused to think. "But who is the Prince, I've never read about him."

"Of course you have you just don't realize. his name was Enigma, or Black Knight, current Lunar Guard Captain. Because Monarch was killed while protecting his honor I felt guilty for just watching that happen. I asked Starswirl to seal him inside an amulet for his widow to wear around her neck, so he could be with her always."
