Being different is good.
That being said, being different comes with a price. And in a world divided by race and paranoia, the price doubles.
Being the only human in a world of sentient talking equines was no easy life. The mere fact that you were still able to earn your keep and thrive amongst the unique inhabitants was a borderline miracle. That, and you had to keep your head down for the most part.
You were walking along the sidewalk, taking care to avoid the stares of the ponies that would pass by you. You were quite used to this by now, and the way they would look at you was something that you were already familiar with.
The busy, bustling streets of the city made it easier to blend in, if it weren't for your towering stature that enabled you to look over the sea of pastel ponies at your own leisure. Ignoring the stares and muffled conversations going on about you, you duck into a nearby café.
The café itself was a quaint little establishment, in your opinion. The air inside was warm and welcoming, while the inhabitants, not quite so. Whispers would accentuate your approach, and a quick survey of your surroundings told you that you needed to make your visit a quick one.
You walk towards the cashier, the line parting to let you through. They knew enough to conclude that you weren't one of them.
"The regular, please." you hand a few bits to the cashier, who takes them from you while giving you a scathing look.
He then hands you a bag with the pastry you ordered.
"Thank you."
The cashier grunts in response, waving you off with a hoof. You were used to that kind of treatment, after all, you had lived among their kind long enough to know that they were simply too wary to get to know you at all.
You exit the shop, but as you walk down the lane towards your next destination, something catches your eye.
Or rather, somepony.
She peers at you from around a corner, waving at you with an adorable smile on her face. She giggles to herself before yelling loud enough that the whole street was now staring at you.
"Hiyiiieeeeeeee!! Mr. Human!"
You quicken your pace, it's her.
The unicorn had been tailing you for quite a while now. Whether due to the unusual nature of your presence or out of sheer curiosity, you didn't know. But one thing was for sure, she was definitely interested in you. And that was something.
You walk faster, but soon enough, she catches up to you, trotting at an easy pace by your side.
"Hiyie, Mr. Human! Wha'cha got there?"
You regard the unicorn with a bemused expression. This wasn't the first time that she had attempted to pull you into a conversation, the other attempts being mostly her rambling on about her day while you were forced to listen to what she had to say while getting on with what you were doing.
All in all, the unicorn's presence was something you've come to enjoy, so you let her join you for a while.
You decide that it's best for you to answer her question.
"... A donut."
"Mmmm! Sounds delicious! What flavor are you having?"
"Vanilla custard."
"I like that too! But you know what else I like?" she beams at you before continuing.
"Well, it all started one day when I was on my way to the donut shop..."
And here she was again. She would be going on and on for hours on end, about any topic that would cross her mind. You were quite used to it by now, and you had actually grown to enjoy her company. At least, it was much better in comparison to how most ponies would treat you.
You were getting close to where you lived, in an apartment building just next to the city park. Your unicorn companion was also just finishing talking about whatever she had to say, she had just been talking about anything from the weather to her favorite seasons, from the way pegasi fly to how churros are made.
"...and that's why tennis is one of my favorite sports! You should try it at one point, it's fun!"
"I'll take your word for it."
You eventually reach the entrance to the building. You were just walking up the steps when she calls to you from behind.
"Hey! Mr. Human!"
You turn around to face her, she's looking at you expectantly, as if waiting for a response.
"... Yes?"
"I didn't quite catch your name, what is it?" she tilts her head to the side.
"Do you need to know?" you smirk at her.
She nods.
You tell her your name, and she giggles to herself, before composing herself enough to respond.
"Huh, your name is different from ours...but I like it! It's so...unique!" she beams at you.
You feel elated to know that she thinks so, and you manage to stutter a response.
"T-thank you... Now, if you'll excuse me..."
You turn around to open the front door, but you turn again when she calls your name.
"Yes?"
She walks up to you.
"You didn't get my name." she says, batting her eyelids in what she probably thought was a coy expression.
"Very well. What is your name?"
"Do you need to know?" she smirks at you.
"Ah, touché."
She giggles hysterically, and you turn around again to enter the building before she calls at your retreating back.
"It's Izzy, Izzy Moonbow and you better remember it!"
You walk towards your apartment, the unicorn still on your mind. She was friendly, to say the least. And quite a talker, too. You appreciate the way she treats you like an equal, like a friend. And that was something new coming from a total stranger.
You then think back to what she told you.
You better remember it!
You were definitely going to remember her for a long time.
