Chapter 1: Black and White

I wake up.
Looking around my current location, I discover my own body. It's as plain as the blank canvas surrounding me. My shape is merely an outline of black and white. With no alternating colour, I am nothing more than a basic template. I try to move, but I find the place forbids me from doing so. Instead, I just wait as I stand still in the vast emptiness. Waiting for something, anything — it mattered not.
I don't know what to feel. Being in this plain void of nothingness is strange, but being frozen in place is much stranger. Who knows what will happen to me. I don't wish to think or care about it, whatever happens.
A voice randomly erupts from nowhere. I try to find the source, but there is no use. No good will come of it, I fear. The words are most definitely present, but I can't hear them well enough to understand. Perhaps I'm not supposed to. Perhaps this whole insane scenario will come to an end before I even know it.
As the speech goes on, however, I notice several changes on my body. No longer just black and white, I am coloured. It doesn't matter which colours they are, as that is irrelevant. The fact that I'm no longer a simple template is the most important issue. Some parts of me are still left without colour, but they too are soon filled in. I try to find the creator of this to thank it for its kindness. It has given me uniqueness, a thing not gained easily. Glancing around the whiteness once more, I find nothing. I try to talk, but my uncoloured mouth does not allow it. Patience is key, apparently.
More colour seeps into my body. To my surprise, a pair of wings begin to grow on either side of my chest. I only realise now that I am a pony. It seems strange and illogical to suggest otherwise. My hooves, colourful tail and mane give it away. I silently thank whoever created me — whoever brought me into this existence, no matter how pitiful or meaningless it seems at this moment in time.
The colours have now ceased. As I look down on myself, the realisation hits. I am not just one, simple colour — I am, in fact, many. My multicoloured mane falls down from the top of my head the back of my neck. A small part covers the right side of my face, which obscures my vision ever so slightly. Exactly like my mane, my tail is not straightened. Both are rough and uncared for, which gives a classic look of ruggedness.
How and why did I not already know that? This mane had been with me my entire life; it is odd to think what I would be without it. No matter, my creator seems to have finished. Nothing happens for a long time, but the voice never leaves my side. Even more things to be grateful about. I try to focus in on the words, attempting to understand either the creator, or more about myself. It does not matter so much to me. Then, I hear it.
“This... Rainbow Dash.”
Is that my name? Rainbow Dash? It does make sense, seeing as though I have every colour on my mane and tail. In actuality, I love it, and I think it suits me perfectly. Dashing seems a bit restricted at the moment, but it can wait. There's no rush at the moment, even if that is what my name suggests. I try to settle down as the time passes. The voice disappears for a while, but I can't expect it to stay with me forever.
New emotions begin to course through my mind. What the hay am I doing in this place? In fact, where the hay is this place? I try to move by galloping away, but nothing happens; I stay exactly where I was before. I have my weather job to do right now, so how can this happen now? Of course, just my luck. Just had to teleport to this strange, blank land.
Whatever I try to do to escape, nothing works. For Pete's sake! My wings just don't seem to be working like they usually do, let alone the rest of my body. If I was actually in control of my limbs, I would've probably high-tailed it out of here by now. My friends, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie and Rarity were waiting for me! My best friends, who had been there my entire life! I can't just stay put and leave them! Amongst all the anxiety and insecurity in my already occupied head, a new emotion bubbles to mind.
Fear.
What if I can never go back? How would Ponyville know where I went? I begin to panic. Trapped in my own thoughts in my own mind — just how in Celestia's name am I supposed to get out? I can't stay here... No one can force me to stay here... I want to go out. I need to get out, right now!
“LET ME GO!”
Words escape my lips. I know I should've been used to it by now, but something new stirred inside of me. It's almost like I had never heard the sound of my own voice before, as if this strange occurrence had somehow made me forget.
Suddenly, I can feel my limbs once more. Finally able to move, I put the strange thought to the back of my head before giving my extended wings a good shake. Time to get out of here! Whatever this blankness is, it was changing at a fast rate. Colours begin to seep through, and it starts to look a lot more like Ponyville. Trees, grass and houses all form in front of my very eyes.
“Ponyville, here I come!” I yell triumphantly. Putting all my strength into flapping my wings, I am soon flying. The void is now crumbling away, revealing the entire town of Ponyville. “I'm so happy to finally escape this miserable, poorly-decorated —“
I'm flying fast across the sky with safety being the least of my worries. I don't even know what brought on this sudden rush of speed, but I like it. Dash by name, Dash by game — just my style.
All of a sudden, a purple blur appears in front of me. I try to swerve to avoid it, but it's just too late. I crash head-first into the blob, sending it soaring into the brown mud with me alongside it. As I got up from a strange lump to wipe the muck off my fur, I look up to find a rather unhappy unicorn underneath me.
I can't help but laugh. As sorry as I am for what I did, it sure is a funny sight. The mare is just so helpless and filthy at the same time. After picking myself up from the mud, I help the unicorn to her hooves. She isn't smiling, but I can soon fix that. I put on a convincing tone before making my apology.
“Uh, excuse me!”
Twilight Sparkle certainly wasn't in the mood to excuse me that day. It didn't really matter as such, because our friendship still flourished, and it still does to this very day. I don't regret crashing into her like that, and I'm sure she didn't mind. After all, we would barely know each other is that didn't happen.
I physically can't remember what happened before that event that day. Not boasting about it, but I usually have a very good memory. Hay, I can remember stuff from my fillyhood, but I just can't remember the beginning of that day for the life of me. It doesn't matter, really, but I just haven't been able to let it go. It's like a gap in my memories, and I just can't quite patch it back up.
There is one thing I do remember, though. Through all that happened on the rest of that day, with Nightmare Moon and all, I do remember a distinct voice. The words, of course, I don't recall, and I obviously can't put a name or face to them. It was a voice filled with hope and joy, however. Just remembering the way it spoke makes me feel that all is well.
Whatever, or whoever it was, it spoke with a passion I've never known before.
A/N: So, I decided to stray away from the comedy today. This was both very interesting and hard to write, and I hope it hasn't confused you too much. Well, I secretly hope it has. Never written a story like this before, so I'd like to hear your response. Leave a comment if you like, and I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities.
