It was a brand new start for Mobius. Ever since the Resistance took the world back from Eggman and Infinite before disbanding, things were getting back on track. Now with the Phantom Ruby seemingly gone, there were no more illusions left to defeat and everyone pitched in to fix up the damage left behind.

Speaking of which, Sonic the Hedgehog rushed his legs across the wooden bridge of Green Hill, checking his surroundings to see if anything else needed fixing. Aside from some dusty and broken spots, there didn't seem to be anything left to clean up. The valleys reverted back to green instead of pale-yellow, the shuttle loops and corkscrews were completely whole again, and there weren't many signs of sand or robots to be found.

"Wow! Looks like things are picking up. Better clean up the rest while I'm at it."

But while Sonic zoomed by, a black silhouette with a glowing red eye glared at him while hovering between the caverns. His fist clenched at the sight of Sonic as the speedster restored the remaining spots of Green Hill in less than 10 seconds. The figure then flew away at point-blank speeds before the hedgehog could notice him.

"Phew! That was almost too easy. Hmm... The Chemical Plant should be close by. Let's do it!" Sonic raced to the horizon as that same figure watched him from far away.

Muttering under his breath. "Just you wait, hedgehog. In due time, everything you love will have come... and gone." The figured teleported.

At the Chemical Plant, Sonic blew a chilly breath of air as the freezing atmosphere made him wish for the sun again, but he kept going regardless.

"Brr... Clean up's gonna be a chore here."

As he ran and bounced up to the upper layer using a somehow, non-frozen spring, a small device near his ear started beeping, causing him to skid to a halt.

'Sonic! Can you hear me?!'

"Tails? What's up?"

"The computer just picked up two energy signals coming from the Eggman Empire!"

"Uh-oh! Could Eggman be at it again?"

"I don't know! But you need to get there and see what's going on!"

"Don't worry. On my way!" He said.

And with a sonic boom, Sonic went straight to the Eggman Empire Fortress. He almost slipped a few times due to the icy ground, but that wasn't enough to stop him. If it's Eggman, then how did he come back? Him returning was nothing new for the group, but the last time Sonic and his friends fought him, he just disappeared in that Null Space area and haven't came back since. Whether it's Eggman or not, if those two signals are just as evil, then they're in for a real ride.

Anyway, Sonic kept running as fast as he could towards the Eggman Empire Fortress' entrance. Along the way, he spin-dashed through three normal robots and homing-attacked the top of the bigger robots' heads, making them explode and topple-over. After landing, he finally made it to the entrance and gave the door a massive kick down.

"Welp, this is it. Let's figure out what's really going..." Sonic took a moment to pause. "...on?"

Sonic walked down the dark hallway. All around, the place looked like it's seen better days, not that it was any better to begin with. There were sparking wires that looked like they were chewed by a wild animal, holes that were about as big as Sonic himself, and dead robots everywhere, but still no sign of the two signals.

"Woah! What happened here?"

Sonic's ear communicator beeped before he held it up. "Sonic! Did you find something?"

"Yeah... Uh, Tails? You might wanna take a look at this..."

At Tails' Workshop, he typed something on his keyboard. The computer screen popped up footage from Sonic's view, showing the two-tailed fox all the damage down to the fortress. His eyes widened at the sight of the destruction. If neither of those signals weren't Eggman, then who were they and what do they want?

"Tails, are you seeing this?"

"Yeah, I am. But I still can't believe it."

"Hmph. Can't expect much from old Egghead in terms of spring cleaning." Sonic wiped some dust off of a broken robot. "Still, who did all of this?"

"I don't know! But, hurry and find out before it's too late!"

"Right! I'm almost to the signals. Let's go!" Sonic dashed off again, making huge clouds of dust from the area blow by in the process.

"Okay. I made it. Now let's... Wait, is that...? No way!" Sonic widened his eyes as he stepped back a bit from the two signals. Right in front of him were Eggman, whose clothes were torn up a bit, and Infinite. Infinite was the one who surprised Sonic the most. Last time they fought, he turned into illusion cubes and flew away to the Eggman Fortress. How did he return? And why was he glowing more than usual?

"No! Stay back, you fool! How dare you defy me?!" Eggman demanded.

"I am not another plaything for you to throw away, Doctor. It's time you learned that." Infinite replied.

Eggman growled.

Sonic stepped forward. "Mind if I throw in my two rings?"

"Sonic!" Both the Doctor and Infinite shouted.

"Finally. I knew this would get your attention, but I didn't anticipate you getting here so quickly."

"It's almost like I'm called Sonic for a reason, huh?"

"Enough! Let us wrap this up, you two." Infinite snapped his fingers. A giant, dark-purple portal appeared, growing larger and larger with each passing second as it sucked the two in.

"Wait-- That's-!" Sonic said with shock.

"NO! Stop!" Eggman followed.

Both Sonic and Eggman bolted out of there. But since Eggman took so long to get out of his Egg-Mobile, he was the first one to get caught. "Noooooooooo!"

Sonic, on the other hand, tried to high-tail it out of there, but Infinite threw energy cubes to make it harder for him. Dodging each cube one by one, the hedgehog finally had enough and spin-dashed one of them, only to get electrocuted.

Yelping in pain, he then dropped and was sucked into the portal, too. The portal closed itself up.

"Now, that's better. Two down, Eleven more to go. First, I must find Shadow... I have some long overdue payback to give to him."

Infinite flew off. Unbeknownst to him, Sonic's ear piece communicator was dropped on the floor after he was blasted.

"Sonic! Are you there?! Sonic...? Sonic...?!"
