A tale of ponies not for those with kind hearts. Chapter 1

Introduction

Well just about everypony else has their stories about Equestria, from times where life was more simple. They would tend to their farms and pay the rates and do their thing to help the land. After those stories came the ones of strange discovery's and lessons learned from mistakes of others, most including messing with the new found power of magic. Then came war with it's death and sorrow, only because one pony wanted more then the other. After those horrible times things started relax and return to peace. There was still death and disease but it was manged thanks to study and understanding of that same magic that created it. However the scars left from the misuse of magic were still fresh, especially on the other side of the globe, where the wars were raged and dead left unburied. The magic aftermath left strange effects that created things that should not of been. Most of these things came to the peaceful part of the world where they now live such as timber wolves and dragons. The more evil things were locked away behind a giant gate that was locked forever until such a time when harmony was at it's peak and it would break free, ready for it's vengeance...

Location: Birth village. Age: 8

My story begins in a peaceful village on the borders of Equestira, we were just a group of farmers that used the land to help the great kingdoms and find our place in this world. Being on the edge of the Everfree forest had left us somewhat isolated and under worry of being attacked but we were never were and so we had defenses that would repeal a small convoy of foals. I lived with my Pegasus family who's job was to pretty much make sure the sun shone when we wanted it to. In the family there was Mum and Dad, my big brother, and me. Mom and Dad were both bright purples, with a mix of white and yellow mane colours. My name at the time was Night Wing, properly because of my midnight blue coat and ghost white mane. My brother was called Fire Wing due to the face that he could somehow manipulate fire with his wings. His coat was maroon red and he had the same ghost white mane I had. We were always getting into trouble one way or another, mainly because we would love to go adventuring into the forest.

"You sure this is a good idea? You know that we will likely never need to live in the forest right?" Adventure is out there! And we were here to find it. The sun had it's happy face on and was shining it's brightest. That helped to make the forest

less creepy then average and gave us extra energy. The path was covered in the last of the snow from winter and spring was being spring. That didn't stop the ground from being as mushy as the river bed. Fire Wing just flew over it all, saving him the trouble of washing his hooves when we got home.

"You never know, and until you learn to fly that will always be a problem." So I can't fly. I'm only eight, and mom says late flyers are stronger flyers. "Well, this time we are looking at caves that give us shelter and cover us from the sight of any predators. Just remember the drill." The drill was 'Run from pissed off wildlife'.

I was about to reply with a sly comment when my left fore hoof got stuck in the mud and I did a face plant. Turns out karma is a mind reader. "Hey bro- heehee- are you- *snort* ookkk-AAAHHHHAAHAHAHAH! OH YOUR FACE! YOU SHOULD SEE IT!! HAHAHAA!" When I learn to fly brother. Oh when I learn to fly...

I pulled myself out of the mud and trotted by my so-called loving brother. "Come on mule, lets get outta here. Let's go see some caves then go home." He continued to laugh like an idiot while I went ahead. Further down the path I stopped, a cave hidden by a large tree caught my eye. "Hey! Here's a good one!" Looking back he was still recovering. Sighing, I entered the hidden cave and had a poke around, it was pretty dark so  I just felt my way around.

I eventually found something furry. "What the? Brother is that you? Hello?" I gave the furry thing a tug to get it's attention, and was replied with a roar of a pissed off manticore. "YYYYAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!" I said in turn, turning around and heading for the light.

Racing into the light I was blinded for a split second and the manticore went flying over my head and face-treed himself. I wasted no time in getting the buck away from the giant lion/scorpion/bat/thing. "Brother! Run!" Looking around he was no where to be found. Guessing he heard the roar and was already gone I continued running, stealing a quick glance behind me to spot the manticore back on it's paws, it's eyes already red from blood yet to be spilled.

It was closing down on me quickly and I could feel its breath on my neck, the smell of rotten meat making me gag. I took one last look back at it before falling flat on my face in the mud again. I turned, staring up at my death in the shape of a manticore paw being raised into the air.

"Hey ugly!" Fire Wing came zooming from right crashing into the paw and holding on for dear life. "Run Night Wing! Save yourself!" That was all he said before being flicked my the arm by the other arm, being sent flying into the forest. I wasted no time thinking, just got out of the mud and ran.

I galloped like I never had before, finally reaching the village, screaming at the top of my lounges trying to catch everyponys attention. "Night Wing, what's wrong?" came the sweet reassuring voice of Mom.

Between gasps and sobs I managed a feeble few words. "Cave... Forest... Fire Wing... Manticore." As if on cue the manticore came bursting out of the tree line, death in its eyes. Mom said nothing, just flew up to it and started to spin around it, catching it's attention. I looked up to see dad creating as big a storm cloud and quickly as he could. Once he was satisfied, it jumped on it unleashing a powerful jolt of lightning that stuck the manticore on the head with a CRACK.

The manticore yelped in surprise and turned back to the forest, running with its tail in-between its legs. I was cheering happily until my parents looked at me. Their faces said it all. Fire Wing then came out of the forest, somehow unharmed.

"Night Wing. Into the house. Now." Mom looked like she might have more blood in her eyes than the manticore. I looked at my dad and he simply nodded. I sighed and slowly made my way to home.

================================================================

"Please? You can't seriously be making me do this!" I wined. My mother gave me a glare that would freeze a bear, and it worked. "I mean... It was... Fire Wings... Fault?"

"Young colt! You brought a manitcore into town! Do you know what could've happened if me and your father were not around?! Somepony could of been killed!" Yea, so we pissed off a manitcore. I would still rather have that than my mothers rage. "You and your brother will be staying home tonight, both your doors locked and you will clean you rooms every possible way and not stop till we get home!"

"WHAT?! Wha... What about the party?!" The village throws party's ever now and then mainly to increase moral or bring new ponies into town. But this time the village managed to buy a new water wheel and so with a real reason to celebrate the party will be a real one, which according to the legends (my brother) they were the most wild things ever!

Mum was just about to answer when Fire Wing tried sneaking past her, no doubt avoiding what could be his doom. Mum didn't even turn around, she just simply said "Night Wing to your room. Fire Wing, we need to talk." so I slowly trotted off to my room, wishing a good luck to Fire Wing on the way past.

I didn't hear most of the conversation but I could tell it was getting pretty heated. Eventually I heard doors slamming and when I looked out my window I could see Fire Wing flying away into the distance.

A short while later, I was cleaning my room like I was told when there was a knock on my window.

=======================================================

"Hey! Wait up!" I cried as I fell behind, "It's not fair that you know how to fly!"

"Shh! Do you want to get caught again?" sneered Fire Wing, "Remember what happened last time we got caught? I had to push clouds around all day while you got to sit back and help in the kitchen." Fire Wing shook his head sadly. "You know I could teach you to fly, if you weren't scared of clouds."

I looked at him in anger. "I am not! I just don't want to do all those extra chores. And if that means staying on the ground then fine!" My face must of been red because he chuckled before moving on.

We were out after dark doing what we do best, pissing around and annoying our parents, and hoping to get away from the village before the adults started having their party.

"Well you can stop complaining! We're almost there." Me and my brother have always been close, we never lie to each other, tell on each other, or fight over anything. Nether of us had out cutie marks as well so we spent a lot of time trying to find them. I trust him completely, so when hes says there was an amazing cave with some weird gems in them, I was pretty excited.

"When did you find this cave exactly? I thought you were to busy being knocked out to go findings caves." He stopped for a moment, like he was thinking of a lie, before answering.

"I was in it when I came to. It was a pretty lucky hit." There was something off about his voice. Almost as if he didn't want me to know something.

We went under roots, over streams and even jumped across huge gaps in the ground. We finally arrived at the cave Fire Wing had been talking about. The entranced hidden by a few giant ferns.

"It this the cave brother? It looks empty." Indeed there was not a lot in the cave save for a few boulders.

"Yes this is diffidently the place. The room with the drawing is just over there." He pointed a hoof into the darkness. After realizing it was to dark for me to see he flicked a wing and created a ball of fire that showed that way. "Just over there. You go and have a look, I just need to check something over here." he wondered off to a different corner and looked content, so with ball of light floating in the room I advanced to see what was to be the biggest change in my life.

And on the walls of this strange wall was...

Nothing.

Before I could question Fire Wing he said: "Sorry bro." It wasn't till the ball of fire went out and I heard stone scraping against stone did I turn to find the exit blocked, and my brother no where to be found.

"Brother! Brother!" I screamed as I slammed against this new stone wall trying to free myself and find out what was going on. Alas, the stone stayed where it was and I quickly fell into panic. "No, Oh no no no! What do I do? What is this place?"

With no light and no idea of how or why I got into this mess, I decided to search for an exit that was unlikely to even be real. Unbelievably, I found one passage that was very real, I don't why I hadn't noticed it before. I was just small enough to squeeze through and I crawled my way down the passage. It was on a steep downward slope but if it got me out of the cave, I didn't care. After a few minutes of slowly making my way forward and getting poked by sharp rocks and roots, I started to see a light. It wasn't moonlight but it was some kind of light and I was sick of not seeing.

I came out into a room where the ground was made of a strange glowing rock the spread around my feet as I stepped on it. As I stood in the middle of the room it began to pulse like it was attached to a heart. As it pulsed the glow grew up the walls to show writings and pictures of a time lost to history.

It showed a group of ponies, three unicorns, four pegasi, and two earth ponies, make their way up what looked to be a mountain. At the top was a large gate covered in symbols that made no sense. The next picture showed the group of ponies standing before the gate. Then it got weird. The wall started moving. The gate opened revealing what look like a doll, had a imprint of what looked like a dog and another figure that looked like the doll.

I stepped forward and pick up the doll with my wing, turning it over to examine it. It looked nothing like any pony, it had a body but with no tail, two long things, I think they were legs, hanging off the bottom of it but instead of hooves it had flat pointed things. Slightly higher were two more legs but they went off to the side and made five little sticks (?) coming off each one. It's head wasn't attached but sat where the doll was. It was easy enough to guess where the head went but as I placed it the entire doll started to glow, then just disappeared. The glowing died down and stone could be heard moving behind me.

I turned to find a exit back into the forest. I didn't think twice about leaving and I galloped back towards home. It was brighter then normal but I was to guess that was because of the party, but as it came into view I saw that no pony was partying.

The whole town was ablaze. All the homes and stores were on fire as the ponies that lived there ran for their lives. I thought it was because of the fire but I was wrong. Chasing my poor neighbors were bandits, cutting and slashing the town and its ponies to pieces. Blood was sprayed everywhere as more and more ponies fell with lost limbs. The screaming was the worst part and it took me a while to realize that I was the one screaming. Unfortunately the bandits heard it too and started to gallop my way. I turned away from the blood soaked scene and attempted to lose myself in the forest.

I didn't make it far before tripping over roots and face planting into a stone wall.

I was fading out of conciseness and back in again. I turned to look at my approaching doom. Everything well blurry and my ears were ringing so I'm sure what happened next.

"Hey! There... ... ... Look out!... ... ... AARRrrhhhh... ... ... Run... ... get u- NNOOOOO... ..."

After a few more moments of blurriness, my vision finally started to clear up. I saw my brother. He had fear and horror all over his face and was looking... at ME. "Brother?" I wheezed. He shook his head, turned, and bucked me in the face.

That was the last thing I remember before falling unconscious.

I awoke sometime later. My head was pounding against my skull, threatening to crack open my head if I didn't do something to calm it. Looking around, there was no sign of any pony. In the distance was a wall of smoke climbing into the sky. I got up on my hooves, still dizzy from my headache, and started trotting back home.

There was not much left of it. Only charred bodies and piles of charcoal. I called out, trying to see if anypony was still around.

"HELLO? MUM? DAD? FIRE WING? ANYPONY?!" Not a sound was heard from any other living thing. All those that had survived were long gone. I knew that if the bandits came back there would be no running, but I didn't care. I sat down in the middle of my former town, and began to cry.

I stayed like that for an hour or two before I slowly got back on my hooves and headed back to the forest with no real plan. I had given up hope so I didn't care what happened to me any more. I just wanted to get away from this graveyard.

My whole life burned down overnight. I was alone.

This is the first time I have written a story so any and all feedback is helpful. Please tell me what I can do better and if you have ideas for where this could go I would be happy to hear them.

Any part that resembles another story is accidental and I’m sorry.
