A Lifetime of Tomorrows
“Do you take this woman, Sunset Shimmer, to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself solely unto her for as long as you both shall live?”
“I do.” You stare into the most gorgeous set of eyes you’ve ever known as you speak the words.
“And do you, Sunset Shimmer, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself solely unto her for as long as you both shall live?”
“I do.” She stares back at you, reveling in the moment just as much as you are.
The words echo around you, searing into your memory for all time. Pride, joy, and everything in between swells within you. The goofy smile on your face is matched only by the one gracing your love’s angelic visage.
“Then by the power vested in me by the city of Canterlot, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
Your hand tightens around hers as your heart pounds inside your chest. It’s really happened. She’s really yours. You’re really hers. You and Sunset. Together forever.
“You may kiss the bride.”
You both lean forward. But just before your lips touch in the first kiss of your new life together, you hear your wife whisper something—
“Are we there yet?”
The sudden, unexpected question derails your lips and then your entire train of thought. Before you know it the altar, the guests, the entire wedding is fading away from you, replaced by a somewhat muted thrumming sound and… is that coffee you smell?
“I said, are we there yet?”
The dreamscape seems to dissipate around you and your eyes flutter open, only to be immediately assaulted by harsh overhead lighting. “Ow…”
“Morning, sleepyhead. Looks like we’re almost there.”
Even when trapped half in and half out of a quite lovely dream, that voice is music to your ears. While you fumble for the seat controls to return your seat to a mostly upright state, you continue to squint your eyes against the harsh cabin lights. “Now I see why the newer models have dimmable LEDs,” you mutter.
You slowly depress the nearby latch to flip out the entertainment screen and tap it awake. The Route Tracker now shows just under two hours until landing.
“How’d you sleep?” she asks.
“Surprisingly alright,” you answer. “Helps when you can lie flat for the most part, of course. You?”
“About the same, I’d say.” Sunset pulls her phone out of her purse and checks the time. “Forgetting timezones for a sec, I think we were out for about three hours? Maybe a bit longer than that?”
You let out a slight yawn that quickly morphs into an upper body stretch. “Not a full night’s sleep, but way better than none at all. Gotta say, these business class seats are pretty dang good.”
Sunset grunts in approval as she struggles to run a brush through her hair. It doesn’t appear quite as chaotic as her usual ‘bedhead’ look, but you’re just glad she’s mostly gotten over her old habit of just making finger guns in the mirror and heading out the door without a second thought.
One of the flight attendants, a tall brunette named Azure, slips into your field of view a few minutes later, bearing her seemingly constant smile and a pot of hot coffee.
Sunset eyes the coffee carafe like it’s the fabled holy grail. “Ah, salvation has arrived!”
A light breakfast service soon follows, which you both happily dig into. You watch the sun continue to rise above the cloud deck as you eat, the serene view doing as much to boost your energy as the meal itself. As you wash down the food with some fresh orange juice and a second cup of French roast, you let your mind wander through the remainder of your interrupted dream. Holding Sunset’s hand, slipping that simple gold band on her finger, declaring your unending love for each other in front of your closest family and friends. And that first kiss… just thinking about it sends a spark through you all over again.
You can’t help but send up a silent thank you to whatever’s up there in the heavens for bringing you back to that coffee shop a little over a year ago. Because if not for that, you’d never have gone back to the cabin, and without that, well, you wouldn’t be on your honeymoon right now at all.
Sunset finishes her breakfast soon after you, though she takes a few minutes to savor the extra croissant that Azure “accidentally” added to her plate alongside the expected warm scone, a nod to a comment Sunset had made just after boarding about how much she loved the croissants in the airline’s Business-class lounge.
With breakfast service done, you and Sunset take turns freshening up a bit in the lavatory, top off the charge in your phones, and prep your other carry-ons while you watch the final minutes tick away on the 3D route tracker function built into each seat’s infotainment screen. After a few minutes you hear the familiar ding of the cabin announcement system.
”Good morning, ladies and gentleman. Quick update from the flight deck. We’ll be beginning our initial descent in approximately twenty minutes, so if you need to make one last trip to the lavatory, please do so before that seatbelt sign comes back on.
“Traffic pattern looks good this morning, so we should have you on the ground and to our gate a few minutes ahead of schedule. Weather on the ground in Zurich is mostly sunny with some high clouds and light winds. Current temperature is fifteen degrees centigrade.
“On behalf of myself, my first officer, and our entire crew, we want to thank you for choosing Air Europa, and we hope to see you again soon, wherever your travels take you next.”
Sunset reaches over the seat divider and grabs your hand. You turn your head and meet her smile with one of your own.
“Ready to make some new memories?” she asks.
You squeeze her hand tightly. “Like you wouldn’t believe.”
“Are you sure we’re going the right way?”
“Yes! I haven’t steered us wrong yet, have I?”
“No. Well, except for that traffic circle back in town.”
“Hey, all of those street names sounded the same!” You grunt and quickly take a hand off the wheel to wave it in the air. “You try picking out ‘Strassbergstrasse’ from ‘Zweierstras-whatever the heck that was’ while also trying to drive in a circle without hitting something.”
Sunset sticks out her tongue and blows a raspberry at you. You return the favor and manage to hold it for a few seconds before you both break into a bit of laughter.
“I’ll let you slide this time, dear,” she finally says. “But we did find that cute little coffee stand as a result, so I guess it wasn’t an entirely wasted side trip.”
“True, although I’m pretty sure the currency conversion made that the most expensive latte I’ve ever had too.”
She shrugs at that. “Eh, it’s our honeymoon. We can splurge a bit, right?”
You nod your head in agreement as you carefully move into the left lane to pass some slower traffic. The dark blue sedan you had rented was no top of the line performance machine, but it displayed more than adequate power, and so far was darn comfortable too.
“Gotta say, this isn’t a bad car at all. Too bad they don’t sell these back home. I could rock one of these.”
“And give up your fancy imported coupe?” Sunset asked, feigning shock.
“Well, at least rock it as a daily driver,” you answer. “Ditch the cramped coupe, then keep the truck for weekends or something. Besides,” you brush your hand across the soft material on the upper dash, “this is a good setup. Leather, power everything, turbo motor, more cargo room, and great mileage. Sounds good to me!”
“Fair point.” Sunset fidgets in her seat until she’s leaning a bit to her left. “But there’s one thing that old truck has that all this new tech wizardry can never beat.”
“Rumbling exhaust note?”
“No…”
You suddenly feel Sunset’s hand on your right leg, moving quickly up your thigh and right to your crotch. Her fingers brush against you and your whole body tenses in the best possible way.
“A bench seat.”
Her fingers explore a bit, teasing you through the fabric of your jeans. You breathe deeply and try to refocus your mind on the road ahead of you. Jeans or not, the mere sensation of her hands on you sends little sparks through your leg, causing your foot to ever so slightly goose the gas pedal a little more.
“I’m… I’m trying to drive you know…” you finally say.
“Am I wrong though?” she asks, right before her fingers slide under your shirt and tease the skin just above your waistline.
“Hmmm…” you let out a small sigh, silently thanking lady luck for the lack of other cars around you at the moment. “N-no… not at all, Sunny.” Memories of the many times that the bench seat in your old truck was put to use flash through your mind, and it takes every ounce of your concentration not to pull her over the center console right then, physical limitations be damned.
And just as quickly as her hand had arrived, Sunset pulls it back. She pecks you on the cheek and sits back, laughing innocently. “Sorry, you know you’re too easy to tease sometimes.”
“You just know how to push my buttons.”
“Who? Me?” you glance over to Sunset, who’s playfully holding her hands over her head in the shape of a halo.
“Yes, you,” you reply with a grin. “But I know how to push yours too, you know.”
“That you do,” she replies, smiling mischievously. “And you can push them as much as you want later. Speaking of later, where’s this mystery hotel anyway? You still haven’t told me exactly where we’re going.”
“Getting close, I promise. Only another…” you reach out to your phone, still anchored to one of the air vents with a car clip, and refresh the map. “forty-five minutes, give or take. But don’t worry, I think you’ll like it there.”
“Dear heavens… this is… this is real?!”
Sunset is standing on your room’s spacious balcony, staring out into the distance. Calm, crystal blue water stretches out below, seemingly within arms’ reach of the hotel, itself nestled on the slope of one of the many mountains that surround this lake in the heart of the Swiss Alps. She slowly scans the horizon over and over, as if it’ll disappear if she looks away for more than a second.
You step out onto the balcony behind her, a chilled bottle of champagne in one hand and two crystal flutes in the other. You gently place them on the small table to your left, then scoot over to your right and wrap an arm over her shoulders, careful not to trap her hair in the process.
“So, what do you think?”
Sunset sighs and rests her head on your shoulder, her eyes still locked on the gorgeous mountain views all around you. You begin to say something, but instead you pull her a bit closer and let the silence linger for a moment. Majestic snow-capped mountains tower over you in nearly every direction. The valley below is lush and green, dotted with farms and small roads, a quaint town and a small private airstrip. Clusters of tall, noble trees fill in the hillsides, becoming sparser as the lush slopes give way to the rocky mountainsides.
“If I showed a picture of this to anypony back home, they’d swear I had visited Elysium.”
“Well,” you sigh before kissing the top of her head, “the website did say this was ‘heaven’s front door in the Alps’.”
Sunset chuckles a bit at that. “Seriously though, how’d you find this place anyway? I don’t recall this coming up in any of our trip planning searches.”
“A bit of dumb luck, actually,” you answer. “I was looking for a nice restaurant in Zurich to go to for our splurge dinner when this place popped up in the ‘hidden gems’ list. The menu alone caught my attention, but when I realized this hotel was attached to it, it was a no brainer.”
“I can see why. Hard to think of anything that would beat this view.”
“I can think of one thing,” you say in a somewhat low voice.
“Oh?” She turns her head to look back at you and smiles. “What would that be?”
You peck her on the lips. “I’m lookin’ at it.”
Sunset kisses you back and laughs that perfect little laugh that you love so much. “I didn’t realize the champagne came with cheese instead of strawberr– Eep!”
Her sarcasm is interrupted by your fingers dancing around her waist where you know she’s the most ticklish.
“Eee! S-stop! Ha!” She squirms in your grasp for a few moments before finally surrendering to your embrace. “Big meanie,” she says, adding a playful thump on your shoulder for added effect.
You loosen your grip enough to stretch behind you and grab the champagne glasses one at a time, passing the first to her. After carefully filling each glass you set the bottle down, then raise your glass in a toast.
“If I was really mean, I wouldn’t be sharing the bubbly, now would I?” You clink your glasses together and take a sip. “Mhmm, great stuff.”
“Heck yeah,” she replies. “Oh, and by the way…” Sunset quickly follows the first sip with another, larger pull from the glass, smiling as it washes down her throat. “If you weren’t going to share, I think I could convince you otherwise.”
Before you can answer she darts forward and kisses you. The lingering cold from the bubbly shocks your senses, but it quickly fades into a pleasant warmth when your tongues meet one another. Your pallet is awash in strawberries and champagne all over again, and you eagerly shift your arm down to your side to draw her closer without spilling your glass. The moment is brief, but still your mind already senses the amazing experiences awaiting you and your wife in this, the most romantic setting you could have ever imagined. That ember of anticipation and desire flares inside you and you deepen your kiss, drawing the cutest of coos from Sunset.
You break for air and the first thing you see is the cute flush in her cheeks, and the devilish look in her eyes. No need to ask what she’s thinking. You know it’s the same mix of giddy anticipation that’s beginning to burn inside of you too. The temptation to abandon your plans for the rest of the day and carry the red-haired goddess before you into your room and lay her over the extremely comfortable looking chaise lounge becomes stronger by the second.
The temptation builds quickly, and you’re just about ready to put your glass down and do just that when you hear a knock on your room door. “Ah, I think I know what that’s about. One sec.”
You pass your glass to Sunset, noting wryly as you turn away that she’s already taking an extra sip off the top of your glass. At the door is the friendly gentleman you met at the reception desk when you arrived. The two of you chat for just a minute before he takes his leave.
“What was that?” Sunset asks as she makes her way in from the balcony.
You turn around fully, a wide smile on your face. In your hands are two ivory colored fluffy robes and a sealed envelope.
“Our plans for the rest of the day, actually.” You set the robes on the side table near the door and pat them with your hand. “First, a couples massage to wash away the jet lag. Hot stones of course,” you add with a wink. Sunset is beaming already at the idea.
“Followed up by…” you open the small envelope and pull out a single card, which you turn so she can see it. “Dinner for two downstairs.”
The elated look on Sunset’s face says it all for you. She hops up and down a few times and squees a bit. “Oh, you really did think of everything, didn’t you!” She skips over to you and wraps her arms around your neck. “I’m a lucky girl.”
“And I’m a lucky guy.” You kiss her playfully before reaching over and passing one of the robes to her. “Let’s get some things unpacked first, then it’s off to the spa!”
“Oh my god, I have never felt so relaxed in my life. That was just divine.”
Sunset looks over at you from the other side of the couch, which you all but collapsed into as soon as you returned to your room. “Hmm, that’s good to hear.” She licks her lips playfully. “And the massage?”
“Huh-” you begin to question, but her real meaning hits you a second later and you give her a sly grin. “Heh. Well played.” You scoot closer to her and wrap an arm over her shoulders. “The massage was excellent, yes. But, I think that the steam room still has it beat.”
A few soft, teasing kisses, then you snuggle closer, letting both the warmth of the ultra soft robes and the residual body heat from the spa session lull you into a happy daze. Sunset sighs contentedly as she lets her free hand rest on your chest. You gently intertwine your fingers with hers, taking a moment to brush a finger over her wedding rings one more time.
Your whole body feels like a bowl of jelly after the incredible massage treatment. The masseuses found and promptly melted away kinks and tension points that you never knew you had. The scent of the infused oils and aromatherapy candles still cling to your nose, and you take a deep breath to soak in as much of it as you can for as long as you can.
Your mind wanders as you cuddle your wife, and it doesn’t take long for your imagination to replay the rest of your time in the spa. Images flash by in a kind of slow motion, like a film reel slowed down to half speed...
The melodic ping of a small chime pulling you both back to the waking world at the end of a truly exquisite couple’s massage.
The short walk down a dimly-lit, private hallway inside the spa complex to a luxuriously appointed steam room that was all yours for thirty uninterrupted minutes.
Climbing up onto one of the polished wooden bench seats next to Sunset, both of you clad only in oversized and incredibly soft towels. Holding hands and basking in the silence while the first wisps of steam begin to emanate from the walls, the floor, and even the ceiling.
Holding each other close as you watch the jasmine and white tea infused clouds envelop you with an almost sublime warmth, melting away tension and inhibition alike.
Your hand slowly inching further and further up her leg while her hand teases the skin just below your own towel.

She suddenly pulls back and almost leaps off the couch. “An hour?! I-I gotta get ready!”
Your explanation that it’s plenty of time and the restaurant is literally an elevator ride away falls on deaf ears as Sunset grabs you and drags you toward the ensuite bathroom. “Get dressed fast! I need time to do my hair!”
You stop and look at your reflection in a large mirror on the wall just around the corner from the hotel’s restaurant. A quick once over to ensure your suit coat and tie are all sorted, just to be sure. You would have done all this upstairs, but after hurriedly freshening up in the bathroom and getting dressed, Sunset had shooed you out of the room. Something about not wanting you to see the dress she had brought for the occasion, and needing complete silence to use her curling iron.
Your outfit, on the other hand, was no mystery. Sunset, along with Rarity, had been there to help you pick out the three-button suit a few months back. Paired with a crisp new shirt, coordinating tie and pocket square, and freshly polished shoes, you smile approvingly at your reflection. “I guess the TV guy was right,” you say as you adjust your tie tack, a polished silver piece designed after Sunset’s cutie mark, “I do like the way I look.”
Satisfied with your appearance, you enter the restaurant and greet the maitre d, who quickly shows you to a table on the far side of the dining room that literally has yours and Sunset’s name written on it in the form of a welcome card signed by the restaurant staff. Even more impressive, however, is the gorgeous view out toward the lake and the valley below afforded to you through the picture window.
Your waiter appears momentarily to introduce himself and offer a pre-dinner drink to start your evening. You order a Gin & Tonic, Sunset’s go-to cocktail, for her, and a Manhattan for yourself. The waiter promises to deliver them both upon Sunset’s arrival, then takes his leave to attend to the few other tables who had opted for a somewhat early dining time.
You quickly check your watch, then turn your attention to the dining room itself. It sits at the end of the hallway you were previously in, not unlike the cross on top of a T. Plush leather chairs and white table cloths accompany tables large and small, all of which afford their guests at least one good angle to take in the amazing views outside. Thick, warmly colored curtains flank each picture window, while muted whites, greens, and yellows diffuse the light from the sparkling light fixtures into a warm, welcoming glow. Through the French doors beyond you can see the expansive patio dotted with more casually appointed tables, large umbrellas to provide shade from the late afternoon sun, and a stone fire pit for use in the evenings.
The sound of heels clicking against tile reaches your ear, and you turn your eyes back to the arched entryway you just came through yourself. A nervous excitement is already brewing inside you. The sound grows closer, and a moment later you see the maitre d re-enter, followed by Sunset. As soon as you see her, you know only one thing for certain…
There’s not a shade on the patio that could dim the light of the star that just walked in.
“Wow…”
You stand to get a better view. Your eyes meet hers in an instant and never lose focus, following her every step of the way as she’s led towards your table. Her dress is… you can hardly put a word to it, because your mind’s ground to a halt in sheer awe.
Sunset is wearing an absolutely stunning one-shoulder dress. It flows down from the wide strap on her right shoulder, with the top hem cutting down and across her chest towards her left side, dipping down just enough to tease the swell of her left breast. Combined with the exposed shoulders, it’s a hundred times more alluring than any plunging neckline you’d ever seen her wear.
The dress gently hugs her every curve through her midsection and past her hips, which sway hypnotically as she draws ever closer. The ambient light casts a slight sheen off the dark teal fabric, reminding you in some ways of the dress she wore to the concert at Camp Everfree all those years ago.
Streaks of golds and oranges in numerous hues dance across the dress, flowing down from Sunset’s right shoulder into an angled skirt that stops mid-calf on her left leg, but just above her ankle on her right side. The pattern seems almost floral at first glance, but as she rounds the last set of tables separating you, you see it more clearly.
“Feathers…”
Phoenix feathers, to be exact. Much like the ones she described to you from her time in her native Canterlot. The stylized feathers overlap a bit, giving the impression that the fiery bird was about to take flight and leap off the fabric at any moment. The hidden meaning in that image, in light of everything you know she had gone through over the years, isn’t lost on you one bit.
Your eyes catch the small flashes of green on her black patent leather heels for a moment, but that only makes you realize that a big reason why Sunset’s dress seems so flowy is because of the gentle slit along the left side that goes up to her mid-thigh. Only a sense of propriety in public forces your eyes away from watching her long legs play hide and seek with the dress.
You lift your gaze, following that beautiful figure all the way back to Sunset’s smiling face. “You look…” you take her hand and gently raise it to your lips. “You look amazing.”
“Surprised then?” she asks coyly.
“Yes! I mean, I knew you and Rarity were going dress shopping at some point, but this is just magnificent.”
She smiles brightly, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. “Shall we?”
“Of course!”
The maître d pulls out Sunset’s chair, followed by your own. As you settle in and unbutton your suit jacket for some extra comfort, you get a good look at the rest of Sunset’s beautiful ensemble.
Some of her luscious, silky hair cascades in gentle curls over her right shoulder, while a kind of half updo transforms the rest into perfectly nested layers of red and yellow. Simple drop earrings show off vibrant orange topaz gemstones, providing a perfect complement to the pendant around her neck – a handcrafted silver piece intricately styled after her cutie mark and filled with small red and yellow gemstones that simply glow in the evening light streaming through the window.
If you didn’t already know the gorgeous woman across from you, you’d bet everything that your dining companion was Aphrodite herself.
Your waiter returns moments later and delivers your drinks, much to Sunset’s delight. After a brief toast, you take turns sipping each other’s drink while perusing the short but exquisitely presented menu.
“By the way…” Sunset says, using the menu to shield her voice a bit, “I couldn’t help but look this place up on my phone while waiting for the curling iron to heat up. I know we’re splurging and all, but you did see the going rates at this place, right?”
“Sure did,” you nod, “but don’t worry, we’re not paying the full fare.”
“Oh?” she piques an eyebrow. “I know we used air miles for the flight, but…”
“As always, knowing Rarity opens all sorts of doors for you.”
“Let me guess,” Sunset answers, “she’s somehow a regular here too?”
“No, but she was a longtime client of Lotus and Aloe. Remember they used to run that day spa back in Canterlot?” Sunset nods.
“They sold it and moved over here to be closer to family. Turns out they manage the spa program here now, so Rarity may have called in a favor or two when I told her I was going to book here.” You take a sip from your drink, smiling over the rim of the glass. “Allegedly, of course.”
Sunset sighs and smiles. “That girl knows someone everywhere, I swear,” she laughs. “We definitely need to get her a nice gift while we’re here.”
“Absolutely. So,” you continue, flipping open the menu, “what’s for dinner?”
The next hour and a half is a gastronomic tour de force for both of you. From starter to dessert, each piece of your four-course meal takes you and Sunset on a journey of smells and tastes that you’d never think to combine, but taken together seem almost magical in their own right. The optional wine pairing you opt for raises each dish another notch still, accentuating every flavor profile perfectly. By the time the dessert plates are quietly scooped up by the ever attentive but never intrusive staff, your taste buds are happier than they’ve ever been.
After signing the room charge slip you help Sunset out of her chair, you both bid farewell to the maitre d and begin a leisurely walk back to your room. When you return you doff your tie and jacket and hang them in the closet nearby for now. While Sunset begins to put away her jewelry, you take a look out the balcony doors and nod approvingly.
“Ah, plenty of daylight left, I think. Perfect.”
“Perfect for what?” Sunset asks, walking over while removing her ear rings.
“For a swim, my dear.” You lean in and give her a quick peck on the cheek, careful not to smudge her makeup. “And one with a view like you’ve never seen.”
