Stepping out of the shadows of the darkened streets of Canterlot, Princess Luna waves to a nearby couple whom she had startled with her sudden appearance. At first, it was simple things, like visiting Twilight and stargazing together, or spending time with her sister. That lasted until she found out about clubbing.
The concept baffled her at first, especially with a name that seemed to imply bludgeoning ponies, but after her first visit to DJ Pon-3’s club, she fell in love with the idea. Every week, she would go to various clubs across Equestria, earning a reputation as ‘the Princess of the People.’ Dancing and singing with the regular ponies of Equestria was always the highlight of her week, and had the wonderful side effects of demystifying her and helping her to relate to the common ponies.
Many months ago, she had been invited to a special club by DJ Pon-3. As she looks over the menu again, the barkeep makes his way over to her, having finished with the drink he was mixing when she approached.
“Welcome to the Wild Side, Princess,” the barkeep says, flicking a bit of his silver mane out of his vision with a toss of his head. “What can I offer you tonight?”
“I would like The Sun and Moon, and a ginger ale if you don’t mind.”
“Sure thing, Princess. This one’s on the house, courtesy of Ms. Scratch.” He pulls out two bottles of liquor. One shot of each is poured, and the amber coloured one is lit on fire with a spark from the barkeep's horn.
Luna lifts the flaming shot to her lips and downs it. The warm cinnamon had an almost nutty taste to it, and the whole drink tasted like warm sunshine on her tongue. Setting the shot glass down, she lets the warmth fill her for a moment before she lifts the shot of ice cold vodka to her lips. Downing the second shot, she’s surprised just how much it feels like a cool night to her throat, despite the burn of the alcohol. She sits there quiet for a moment before she sets the shot glass down.
“This has to be the best set of shots I’ve had since my return.” She says as she slides the shot glasses back to the barkeep.
“I’m glad you liked them. That first one is Sun Stone Cinnamon Rum, it has your sister’s personal seal of approval,” he tells her as he pours her a glass of ginger ale. “The second was Crystal Mountain Moonlight Vodka.”
“I will have to look into procuring a bottle of the vodka for myself, and see about giving them my own seal of approval,” Luna smiles as she takes the glass of ginger ale in her magic. “Thank you for introducing me to it.”
“Not a problem, Princess. Have fun out there,” he replies before stepping away to tend to another patron.
Luna spins around to watch the crowd of ponies on the floor. It’s a menagerie of sexual activity. A hoofful of ponies are pissing on a mare that’s lying on the floor, while others are spreading shit across each other’s bellies. The club truly lives up to its name; Wild Side. As she sips her ginger ale, she notices a gaggle of ponies coming into the club from the entrance. “Hi, Princess Luna,” says one of the mares, a unicorn, as she approaches them. “I had no idea you were into this kind of thing.”
“I’m still ‘new to the scene,’ as it were,” Luna replies with a demure smile.
“Why don’t you join us?” The mare asks as she gestured to her friends with a violet hoof. “We’re still deciding what we’re going to do tonight.”
“Sure, as long as your friends don’t mind.”
The mare’s friends quickly assert that they wouldn’t mind at all and, as a group, make their way over to the less occupied east side of the room. Most of the U-shaped booths that line that wall were unoccupied, so the group slides into one to sit and chat about what they want to do tonight. As the newest addition to the group, Luna is the last one to take a seat. The group consists of three stallions and four mares, not counting herself, and all of them seem to be close friends.
“Welcome to our little group, Princess,” a slate gray earth pony stallion says, as he brushes a bit of his brown mane out of his face. “My name’s Jackhammer.”
“Nice to meet you, Jackhammer, and please, call me Luna,” she says and reaches across the table to hoof bump him.
“Sure thing, Luna,” he replies as he returns her hoof bump.
“I’m Violet Star,” the mare she had first talked to says, “it’s nice to meet you, as well.”
“Likewise,” Luna smiles at her, “and who are your other compatriots?”
Violet Star points to the earth pony mare next to her, who has a golden yellow coat and purple mane. “This is Bit Stack.”
Bit Stack waves to Luna before looking past her and flagging down a waitress. “Nice to meet you Luna, though we better order before they become much busier.”
Violet points to the unicorn stallion next to Jackhammer, who has a white coat and light brown mane. “That’s Prose.”
He waves to her with a smile. “Thanks for joining us, Luna.”
The introductions are interrupted by the arrival of the waitress that Bit Stack had flagged down. Everypony is given a menu and orders for drinks are taken before the table falls into silence as they mull over the menu. What catches Luna’s eye is the griffin dish of Fish and Chips; she had tried it once when an ambassador from one of the smaller griffin nations visited. It was a rather interesting dish, which she quite liked, but hadn’t had in a while. With her mind made up, she set the menu down. The only other pony who had set their menu down was Prose, who was looking out across the floor at the debauchery going on.
“It’s a weird dichotomy, don’t you think, Luna?” he asks as he gestures first to the group and then to the ponies out there fucking and rubbing shit on each other. “Here we are, sitting at a table, preparing to order food, and about fifty feet away, ponies are busy fucking their brains out.”
“It’s an interesting atmosphere for sure,” the other earth pony stallion chimes in. He has a gray coat with a fiery orange mane. “I’m Flint ‘n Tinder by the way, though most ponies just call me Tinder. And don’t mind Prose. He’s been this way since we met him.”
“Hey! I can’t help it and you know it,” Prose grouses.
Tinder ruffles Prose’s mane and pulls him into a hug. “I know, and we all love you the way you are, memories or no.”
“Those two lugs have been doing that since they met, like brothers in a way,” one of the yet unnamed mares says as she puts down her menu. She was the solo pegasus of the group with a wild white mane and sandy yellow coat. “I’m Windswept, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Luna.”
“You too, Windswept.”
“I guess that just leaves me,” the last mare says as she sets her own menu down. “I’m Pixie Dust.” She had a coat so pink, it could rival Pinkie Pie’s, and her deep purple mane reminds Luna of Rarity. Pixie also had a natural sparkle to her that could only come from being a crystal pony.
“Nice to meet you, Pixie, though I must say I’m surprised to find a crystal pony so far from the empire,” Luna says as she marvels at the mare’s sparkling form. “What brought you down here to Canterlot?”
“It’s the center of Equestria, both figuratively and literally,” Pixie replies with a smile. “It’s the source of some of the greatest fashion, and home to many different cultures. I love fashion, and here I’ve been able to achieve my dream of being a model.”
“Ah, I understand. Do you, perchance, know Rarity?”
“I do; I’ve modeled for her before in a couple of shows here in Canterlot. In fact, I’m her go-to for models here in the capital.”
Further talk is interrupted by the arrival of drinks, which are passed out to each of the ponies. A few interesting looking cocktails are passed out to the mares and Prose, while the other two stallions are given mugs of hard cider. Orders for food are quickly placed and menus passed back to the waitress. Toasts are given and everypony at the table takes a sip of their drink. Luna found her drink was a wonderful balance of flavours, if a bit strange-tasting.
“What drink did you go for, Luna?” Jackhammer asks as he sets his mug down on the table.
“The ‘Golden Delight,’ which is quite an interesting drink. It’s sweet and salty at the same time, with a hint of bitter,” Luna says before taking another sip.
The whole group breaks into chuckles at that, and Luna cocks her head to the side. “What?”
“The Golden Delight is a mix of lemon schnapps and fresh piss,” Prose says with a smile. “It’s one of the special drinks that the club makes.”
Luna blushes at her lack of experience, but takes another sip. “It’s better than I would have thought it’d be.”
“Yeah, most ponies expect that the urine would overwhelm the schnapps, but that liqueur is super sweet. It’s actually something I normally order, but I felt like trying something different tonight,” Prose says as he sips his own drink, a pink and orange cocktail that seemed to be slowly blending together.
“It’s definitely good,” Luna says as she takes a sip, “but not as good as the Sun and Moon.”
“Nothing beats that; it’s the club’s most popular drink,” Violet Star says as she sips her own cocktail.
Luna takes another sip of her drink. “So, I know now what Pixie does for a living, but what about the rest of you?”
Bit Stack sets her drink on the table after a sip with an appreciative hum, “I’m an accountant that works for one of the noble families. They’re not a big family and don’t have that much influence, but they have enough wealth to need a full-time accountant.”
“My boss prefers that we call ourselves ‘Sensualists,’” Jackhammer pauses to take a sip of his drink, “but I’m a breeding stud. I work at the biggest insemination clinic in Canterlot. I can trace my family lineage all the way back to the founding of Equestria.”
Luna chuckles, “With your name, I would have figured you’d be doing construction.”
“That’s what my parents thought, too. I still plow into things with my hard, shafted tool, it’s just not the one most ponies are expecting.” Jackhammer laughs before taking another sip of his drink.
“I actually teach at your sister’s school,” Violet says as she nudges Luna. “I’ve seen you there once before, when you came to give a guest lecture on dream magic.”
Luna smiles at that. That guest lecture had been a great success. “Perhaps I will see you there some time; they’ve invited me to return to give another lecure.”
“I wouldn’t mind that.” Violet Star smiles back before taking another sip of her drink.
“I guess it’s my turn, then,” Windswept says as she sets her now empty glass down. “I work with the Canterlot weather team, managing the unicorn detachment, if you can believe it.”
“I bet they’re none too happy about that,” Luna replies before draining the last of her drink.
“Oh, they don’t mind too much. They know the value of having a pegasus leading the team. I'm an expert in weather magic and can tell when something’s going wrong with a storm before it spirals out of control,” she boasts with a hoof to her chest.
“Come off it, Wind,” Tinder says and takes a sip of his cider, “we all know you’re awesome, so you don’t have to brag.” He turns to Luna. “I’m a smith. I make an assortment of tools that are sold in local shops.”
“See, Tinder, you’re entirely too humble.” Wind says exasperatedly. “You make really cool sculptures out of metal, too!”
“It’s just a hobby,” Tinder says and lifts his mug to his muzzle again, but doesn’t take a drink.
Windswept just sighs and lays her head against the table in defeat.
“I guess that just leaves me,” Prose says as he rests a hoof on Windswept’s back to comfort her. “I’m kind of the odd one out. If it hasn’t already been stated, then let me be clear. I’ve lost all of my memories. All I can remember is the last three and a half years, but somewhere in that time I acquired enough bits to live off of for a good decade.” Prose takes a sip of his drink before continuing. “I’m figuring myself out, learning who I am and what I like all over again. Meanwhile, I’m writing a book about what it’s like to rediscover yourself. It’s been an interesting experience, to say the least.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Luna says with a sad smile, “but I at least have a little understanding as to what it’s like. Coming back from the moon was hard, but lately I’ve been feeling better about being part of the rest of society.”
The moment ends with the arrival of food, as the waitress passes everypony’s meal to them. A basket of fish and chips is set down in front of Luna, along with a small cup of tartar sauce. Why someone would name their sauce ‘tartar’ was beyond her, but her fish did taste better with it. Waters were also ordered before the waitress left, so that they’d have something non-alcoholic to drink, too. The table was quiet as everyone started on their meals, enjoying the bout of calm silence.
After a couple of minutes, Luna breaks the silence. “Earlier, you mentioned plans for tonight. What were you thinking of doing?”
Violet Star quickly swallows a mouthful of her pasta. “We usually pick somepony who’s going to be on the receiving end and the rest of us coat them in shit.”
“Since it’s your first time with us, why don’t you pick what you’d like to do?” Prose suggests, setting down his fork and looking around the table.
The others quickly agreed, putting the spotlight back on Luna. She thinks for a moment before speaking up. “I would like to be on the receiving end, and have you all paint me brown.”
“Then that’s what we’ll do,” Violet Star smiles before taking another bite of her pasta, “but dinner and drinks come first. Perhaps you could order a drink from the non-alcoholic menu, since I know you’re at the club’s limit, Luna.”
“To that end, how was everypony’s week?” Bit Stack asks as she sets her fork down so she can take a sip of her drink.
“Well enough,” Prose answers first, pausing to sip his drink. “Writing has been slow, but that’s par for the course. Putting your life into a book when you hardly know anything about it is hard, but each day brings new experiences. Mostly it’s just working out how to express how it feels that I’ve been struggling with.”
There is a brief pause as everypony looks down at their plates. They all wish they could help, but that’s easier said than done.
“I know I’ve only just met you, but if you ever need somepony to talk to, I’m happy to listen,” Luna pipes up, breaking the silence.
“Thank you, Luna.”
The smile on his face makes Luna smile as well. “Anytime. As for my week, dealing with the nobility is always troublesome. Not all are bad, mind you, but some of them could stand to be taken down a few pegs.”
The whole table broke out into chuckles and giggles at Luna’s comment, lightening the mood considerably. When things finally calm down, Jackhammer speaks up. “My week’s been fine. You know I can’t tell ya who, but I helped a pair of nice mares this week. With how sweet they were, I know they’ll be good moms.”
“To the new moms!” Luna cheers and raises her glass of water in a toast.
Everypony joins her, cheering “To the moms!” before taking a sip of their drinks. As the cheer hangs in the air, the waitress comes back and more drinks are ordered, including a strawberry lemonade for Luna. As things calm down, the conversation returns to the topic of everypony’s week.
“I’ve been busy with my clients. They’ve been looking at property, which means looking at financial feasibility,” Bit Stack says before downing the last of her first drink. “Just a small vacation home down in Ponyville.”
“I’m surprised more nobles aren’t doing so, especially with Equestria’s newest princess living there,” Luna comments, before taking a sip of her water.
“That’s exactly why they are looking,” Bit Stack shrugs. “She is their daughter after all.”
Luna spat her water out, narrowly avoiding Jackhammer’s food. “You work for Twilight’s parents?” Luna asks as she uses her napkin to wipe up some of the water that covered the table.
Bit Stack nods. “I do. Most ponies don’t realize they are a noble family, but they are.”
“Indeed, they hardly act like the nobles I have to deal with on a regular basis,” Luna agrees. “They act how real nobles should.”
“Quite right,” Violet Star chimes in. “They’re alumni at Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, and by far, the best of the bunch.”
“I’ve only met Velvet, but she is a very kind mare,” Prose adds.
“Their whole family is,” Luna nods. “They are descendants of Clover the Clever, after all.”
The whole table turns to look at Luna with a collective “What?!” Luna just smiles back, taking a sip of her water as the waitress arrives with their drinks. A few interesting ones are passed over to the mares while the stallions, minus Prose, are given new mugs of cider. Prose is passed two shots, one flaming and one not. He quickly downs the flaming shot and gives a happy sigh. Everypony else takes a sip of their drinks before turning back to look at Luna.
“‘Tis the truth. They are descendants of Clover the Clever. My sister has kept excellent records of the founding six’s lineage,” Luna says, pausing to take a sip of her strawberry lemonade. “While they have many descendants, Twilight Velvet’s side of the family is directly descended from Clover.”
The table is silent for a few moments before everypony but Luna collectively takes a sip of their drink. Revelations of that magnitude weren’t what they were expecting when they walked into the club that evening. When their drinks were set back down on the table, conversation started back up again.
“Returning to our main topic, work’s been good to me this week,” Violet smiles. “The foals in my class have been learning telekinetic precision, so they can better use their magic for things like sewing.”
“Rarity went through that training, too,” Pixie mentions after taking a sip of her drink. “She’s teaching her sister what she can about magic, but I suspect that she’s going to ask Twilight to help her out.”
“No better choice than Princess Celestia’s former protégé and the Element of Magic,” Violet adds.
“Any cool projects in your forge, Tinder?” Prose asks, steering the conversation towards the quiet stallion.
“Nothing too fancy. Just your usual tools and a couple custom weapons for higher-ranked guards,” Tinder replies after sipping his cider. “It’s hard, but rewarding work.”
“My week was similarly calm,” Pixie adds. “I modeled a new dress for Rarity, but that’s about it. The next fashion show isn’t for two weeks, so I don’t have much going on.”
“All of you have it easy,” Windswept grouses and sips her cocktail. “You don’t have to spend your week explaining the feeling of the weather to a team of unicorns. They never quite understand what I mean.”
“That’s the nature of being different races,” Violet says and wraps a wing around Windswept. “Unicorns don’t understand what weather feels like to a pegasus, just as a pegasus doesn’t understand the feeling of a spell that’s collapsing. Besides, we’re going to cover Luna in filth soon, which will definitely help destress you.”
“Yes, after drinks are done then?” Windswept asks as she looks around the table, receiving nods from everypony.
“That just leaves one question, Luna,” Prose smiles mischievously. “Public or private?”
