Equus: The Lurking Darkness
5. Reach's Notes on Equestrian Society and Culture.
Previous ChapterNext ChapterFar Reach has achieved his goal, but had to pay a price. And what a price it was.
Now all his body was in pain for the physical effort he did, something that not even the kind family of Chocolate Harmony could help. To make matters worse, he had no news of Alloy in the entire day. It wasn't like her to do something like this, and, looking out through the window and seeing the light of the moon shine, it was already quite late.
Because he didn't know what to do about his dear friend, he did the only thing that, even when he was on Earth, helped him to take his mind off his worries. And what he did was work.
Sitting by the table and preparing his quill and scroll, Reach thought a little about what to write and how to write, finally reaching the conclusion that, as no one would read his notes, he didn't have the need to write all formal.
And with this new perspective in mind, he started.
Notes about Equestrian Society and Culture.
One of the most incredible things in equestrian society is the ratio of male to female, a fact that molded the entire culture along the thousands of years it has existed; and it is a stark contrast with the human male to female ratio.
When on Earth the proportion are relatively close, here in equestria the number of mares far surpass the number of stallions, and because of that reality, many behaviors credited as manly on Earth are firmly held by females in Equestria.
Normally, in Equestria, males are considered the fragile sex; of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but the great majority of stallion accept this fact and just "go with it". What I mean is that, in a relationship, it is expected that, after the mare pregnancy, the stallion is the one that takes care of the house and foals while the mare works and provides for the family.
Another good example is the courtship. Here, it is expected that the mare take the lead and "hook" the stallion with her charms, while the stallion acts more like a sitting duck waiting to be picked by some female. This is so engrained in the culture that when a stallion does not conform with those behaviors, the mare's become shocked as if it was something from another world.
Yes. Here the stallions are painfully passive, with only some exception. Even I, who came from earth and was an antisocial nerd, am much better than them, and I am extremely shy! (At least, I hope)
Anyway, the relationships in Equestria advance quickly in the majority of cases and are, by the time I am writing this, mostly monogamous. I'm saying this because I read that until some decades ago the common practice was doing something called "herding", where a stallion would hook up with two or more mares, the first being the "alpha mare" and the leader of the group, but as I said, this practice is falling off favor with the newer generation.
This "herding" thing is actually incredible to outsiders like me, and a fantastic way to ensure the success of the species, seeing how the ratio of male to female is. This ratio also manifests itself as the majority of mares have an innate desire to protect the stallion as they are, "Weak-willed individuals, who only go where is said".
An interesting point in this is that the ratio was perfect to the rise of a powerful matriarchal frame, where the mares are normally in positions of power like mayors, military commanders, and even more. The fact that their leader is an immortal demigoddess of the sun probably helps even more these concepts
Reach stopped writing and yawned, opening his wings at the same time. He questioned how he felt pain in the wing when they were stretched, as he had never fly.
With a tired look, Reach dipped the point of the quill in the bottle of ink and prepared to continue putting his ideas in the paper.
Equestria and Religion
I like to make a point here. From everything I saw ever since I was sent to Equestria, nothing is more similar to the human culture than their religion. Of course, not their main religion, but the other ones.
The main religion is called "The Way Of Harmony", and it is not a proper religion, but more a way of life that ALL ponies have a tendency to adopt in a way or another.
The Way of Harmony says that there's a force that binds us all together, all living things and even the ones that have already departed, and one should not judge by race, gender, or even social class.
All is one, and one is all.
It is said that there are six main tenets of this religion, each one represented by one of those Elements of Harmony that appeared in the first episode of the show.
Honesty; The principle of being true to yourself and to others.
Loyalty; The essence of trust between different creatures or even close friends.
Kindness; The idea of empathy, to understand other and to know how to help and even if it is necessary to do so... And, besides, selfishness leads one to the dark side.
Generosity; Those who give without expecting something in return are the richer beings in the world. Of course, no one told this to the dragons.
Laughter; Some say that laughter is food for the soul, but I believe that laughter is something that brings different people together... even so, I'm not certain about it. Really, I am truly confused about it. Maybe I should ask alloy about it when we have time.
MAGIC; of course, this is the last one, and it is the one that kinda prioritize unicorns as the best representatives of the cult of harmony because they have magic horns. Yes, I'm bitter with unicorns because they have access to magic, and I can't even fly.
This cult is truly beautiful and amazing, linking everyone together. Yet, it is incomplete.
Some time ago, I read in a book that "half of one can never be complete". What I mean is that, centuries ago, a cult called "The path of Chaos" was banned in equestria and hunted down by the Church of Sol (I will speak of them later); the problem of this is that harmony represents stability while chaos represents change. Without chaos, this world just stagnate.
What may explain the slow development of new technologies, and even advancements in magic, is in this land.
Another pseudo cult that appeared in Equestria is "The way of the warrior" and showed itself as pretty popular between the meat-eating species and some groups of Pegasus.
By what I read, it is a mix of something similar to the Japanese Bushido, that was bought by the Foxes when they came from the East, and a Nordic way of thinking that was already strong in the far north with yaks and Minotaur's.
The result was the creation of the way of the warrior, something with some core tenants, but that can be adjusted by any species and their liking. This way of thinking is noted taking roots in Minoa (Minotaur), the dragon Lands, Griffonstone, with the foxes of the north, Zebras and even wolves. Of course, this is only what I know... maybe there's more to it.
More importantly, this way of thinking is especially strong with the quartet of Dragons, Foxes, Minotaur and Griffons – they love it and made "the way of the warrior" an integral part of their culture.
The principal tenants of this creed are-
KABOOM!
The sound of a massive explosion came from the south of his house-library, scaring him and making him jump in fright.
Then another one came.
Another one.
And Another.
Far Reach was confused, but he knew that this sound was bad news, and while flapping his wings uselessly, Far Reach ran up the stairs and reached the highest window he had in his home.
From there he could see the dark smoke and dancing lights of flames coming from the docks.
