//-------------------------------------------------------// Equus: The Lurking Darkness -by Fate Weaver- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// 1. Author and the Guard //-------------------------------------------------------// 1. Author and the Guard The Author The sun was finally setting on the city of Baltimare, and Far Reach was finally able to clean the floor between the bookshelves of the library. After doing his final duty, he flipped the plaque on the door to "closed", took one of the books and, sitting at one of the tables, started to read voracious; but not even a minute after he started, someone, to his annoyance, started knocking on the front door. Far Reach didn't know who was at the door, but he needed to be presentable, so he tucked his simple white shirt under his pants, hiding part of his light red fur, and tried to arrange his gray mane while tucking his wings near his back. "A moment, please!' He shouted, but it was too late. A figure taller than him opened the door and entered, wearing the full armor of a city guard. At the scene, Far Reach just stopped and blinked expressionless and, making a 190° turn, he stated returning to his table. "Hey!' The guard trotted after him, taking off the helmet to revel in the beautiful face of a mare."What kind of welcome is that?" Far Reach, already sitting by his table, just looked at the guard mare and smiled soft. "Alloy, you don't need a welcome, you're home." The mare blushed a little with his affirmation and took a sit at the table. "So, Reach, what's you working on?" "You know how I can't understand this world, right?" Alloy nodded "So, I'm studying about it." Alloy horn shone with baby blue light, not much different from her azure coat, and the book in Reach's hands floated to her. "Behavior pattern and culture of Equines population, by D. Liebercolt..." Alloy then looked to Reach, her eyes with a tint of disdain "Reach, you are a PEGASUS, how can you be SO nerdy!" "Hey, you know I don't know much of this world besides...I'm not truly a Pegasus" "Oh, we both agreed on this" Alloy sported a devilish smile, Reach's wings spread a little unconsciously. "Yeah, because I'm hum...-" Alloy cut his sentence, emphasizing her words over his "Because you can't FLY!" Reach looked at her unimpressed, but the way his ears moved showed to Alloy that he was really annoyed, which made her laugh loudly. "Not funny" "Yes, it is" Alloy fought a little to contain her laugh and, after some struggle, managed to do it and looked at her friend seriously."Look, if you really want to get to know us better, then I have an offer for you." Reach raised an eyebrow. "Why, instead of reading about the things you want to know, why don't you look for your answers by yourself?" "How?" "Observation, interviews, etc. Etc..." Alloy spoke slowly "You can even compare it with all these things you have been reading." "Maybe..." Reach was deep in thinking as his friend spoke, he couldn't deny the truthfulness of her words "Alloy, maybe you are right. I saw so many species around the city.... I wish I could know more..." "So it is decided, I will take some days off work, and we will travel around taking notes and meeting new ponies!" "But the library..." "Mom can take care of the library for some days. Besides..." She smiled a little before her face turned a bright shade of pink " ...Never mind, it will be SO FUN!" "If you say so... I'm in." When his last work escaped his muzzle, Alloy jumped from her seat with a brightly smiled. "Deal, you and me, traveling alone throughout Equestria and..." Her face started to redden more and more as she spoke " You will write, I will protect and we... Maybe you can even remember who you are and... and..." It was too much for her, as Alloy's face was so red that anyone who saw it would think she was going to faint at any time, so with a weak "bye" she ran away, leaving Far Reach alone once again in the library. He sighed while looking at the door closing, smiling slightly. He had been in this world for six months, and yet there was a surprise every day. And now Alloy have given him a golden opportunity, something he wouldn't lose. He then stood up and trotted to the second floor of the library, the place where he had been living ever since he got there and, quickly, he found what he was searching for. Some blank scrolls, ink and a quill. Returning to the table on the first floor, Reach turned on one of the light crystals that littered the place and started writing, not in Ponish, but in English. My name is Farley Richard, also known as Far Reach by the locals, and I am a human. Far Reach then bit the point of the quill while thinking, so much has happened in the last half year that he didn't know where to start. He was already writing in a language no pony would be able to read – a fantastic way to protect his information. Six months ago, I was shot while going to college and... I believe I have... died. But, instead of going to any kind of afterlife... I woke here. In Equestria. The place of that cartoon show. As one of them. Far Reach's quill stopped as he recalled the first weeks when he was wandering the city of Baltimare, walking aimless and eating anything he could get, no matter the quality. He felt once again the fear and loneliness and absolute despair of his situation. But he swore to himself not to dwell on these emotions because, thanks to his state, he was rescued. I woke in the streets of a city named Baltimare, and after some time, I got rescued by the Baltimare Guard force, and because of that I found myself in a comfortable bed, a bathroom and had some books to read. What was the problem because I soon realized that, while we can speak the same language, the written one was completely different. Again, memories flooded. This time, happy ones. Reach remembered how he was interrogated by the guards and how none of them believed his story, with all believing he had lost his memory and dreamed his whole life. Even so, one of the guardsmare chose to help him. Day on and day out, she stayed in the barracks the maximum she could, teaching Far Reach how to read and helped him cope with his loss. No matter what, she was always there even when it wasn't her duty, she was there for him. And, one day, she asked him if he would like a job as a librarian so that he could get out of jail. It goes without saying that he accepted it on the spot. The people here are really understanding, and most of them have good hearts. Some of them are angels in disguise. That is why I wish to know more about them. This is my goal in writing this. To have a gift for the ones I that changed my life. To the ones I love. //-------------------------------------------------------// 2. A Storm on The Horizon. //-------------------------------------------------------// 2. A Storm on The Horizon. 2. A Storm on The Horizon. Far Reach woke groggy, still sitting at the study table of the library. His entire body hurt, his mane and fur was a mess, his breath was stinking. So, after a quickly done stretching, Far Reach ran to do his basic hygiene. It was almost time to open the library, but he felt as if starting working without a proper breakfast was just wrong. With this in mind, Reach left his home to eat somenting at the nearest, and in his opinion, the best place, the Bunny's Café. "Good morning and welcome to the bunny's café, can I take your order?" Spoke a brown Earth pony mare wearing a simple set of black clothes "Oh, it's you, Reach!" "Good morning, Harmony, I'm good. Thanks" Reach answered, he loved how friendly those ponies were. "And you?" Chocolate Harmony stood there, looking at Far Reach and scanning him head to hoof. Reach knew her enough to know her dirty smile. "Reach, are you really OK?" Reach was confused at her statement, "you look like you got run over by a Minotaur or... did my dear Alloy manage to FINALLY get some-" "Hey!" Reach almost shouted, his face reddened "I didn't sleep well because I'm writing a book!" "Yeah, I know this kinda of book very well" harmony blinked to the even redder Reach "Now, you will want the usual, right." "Yes..." "Okay, I'll be back shortly." It was fast, and even before Reach's face could return to his normal coral color, Harmony was back with his black coffee and some breads. Without a care in the world, she sat at Reach's table, crossed her leg and smiled. At the same time, a shiver was felt in Reach's spine. "So, what is the book about?" "You know, I don't understand much about the equestrian culture and..." "About OUR culture." Harmony raised a finger "Why do you always speak as if you are from another species?" Reach was about to talk about how he was not a pony but a human, but something inside him urged him not to do it, so he just looked down, incapable of lying to one of his closest friends. "Oh...sorry... I forgot about the memory thing..." "It's okay, really" Reach rose his head, a faint smile in his lips "I just want to know more...to feel part of the group" "Well, maybe I can help with it" Reach raised an eyebrow as Harmony widened her smiled "You can start with us, earth ponies!" "How?" "My family own a farm not far from the city, so you could go there and ask questions to your heart content" "Harmony, you're great!" "I know." And with it, Harmony rose up to return to her job "After you finish your breakfast, I will give you the address." "Thanks, harmony." "Of course, if you could just fly there, maybe you could go there even today, but... well, this is life." When Harmony finished her sentence, Reach's ears flattened and his eyes widened. "WAIT, HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT IT!" Her answer was just a mischievous smile. At that moment, Reach decided to have a serious talk with Alloy about with whom she talks about his... grounded state. Violet Alloy walked into the barracks with a big dumb smile in her face, completely oblivious to the guards looking at her with knowing smirks. She was a mare in a mission, and everything else was dispensable. After all, she spent all night practicing how to speak with her captain about taking some of her days off, and, by Celestia, she was determined to achieve her goal. With a determined look in her eyes, she opened the door to the captain's office without thinking or even knocking. But only after taking three steps, she stopped. There stood the captain, a slate coat pegasus mare named Gravel Wings, and an unknown unicorn that had a grayish azure coat and a dark blue mane. "Officer Alloy, just who I was talking about!" Gravel Wings spoke, her grave voice and professional tone, "When I sent some pony to get you, I didn't believe they would get you so fast." "Yes, Ma'am...?" Alloy was uncertain about what to say next. "Alloy, this here is Night Light" with her hand, Gravel presented the blue unicorn next to her." He is from a special division of Canterlot guard and has come here to ask our help in his next mission." "Exactly" Night Light took a steep forward and extended a hand, "Your captain told me much about you, and I believe that together we can achieve our goal." After a brief handshake, Alloy recompose herself enough to ask the question that started bugging in her mind. "Mister Night Light, you spoke of a goal, but what the goal is?" The unicorn took a quick look at Gravel Wings, that nodded to him. He then took a deep breath. "We have been receiving reports of strange activity in the docks of Horse Shoe Bay, and we believe that the culprit is somepony extremely dangerous." "Do you know who?" "If the descriptions we receive are correct, then we believe that this is the criminal" The serious tone of Gravel's voice made Alloy shiver." His name is Callaghan, a rogue griffon with a reward of more than 10,000.00 Bits for his head." "Wait, MORE than 10,000.00 bits!" "Yes." This time it was Night Light who spoke "he was on our list for some time, and this is the first time we got a chance to catch him in years." "That's when you enter" Gravel Wings continued, her wings extending a little with excitement "I, Night Light, and you will go together to the docks to locate where Callaghan is hiding, we will send a signal and around twenty guards, that will be in position, will come to make the arrest." "A perfect raid." concluded Night Light "and we will start in the late afternoon." "But sir, why me?" "Alloy, you're one of our bravest and most trusted guards. You're the only logical option." answered Gravel Wings "Perfect... but..." Because of all the talk of the plans and criminals, Alloy's anxiety returned in full force when she decided to brig up her day offs. "But, what?"Gravel crossed her arms, she had an idea of what was coming, "say it at once!" "Er... after the raid..." Alloy started sweating and mumbling "can I have some days off?" "Oh, so you finally got the courage to take your colt friend out!" A bright smile came out of Gravel’s snout" You can go, just remember to take precautions, okay." "Thanks, Ma'am, and... he is just a friend." "Riiight." Gravel returned slowly to her table "Now, officer alloy, please return to your post." "Yes Ma'am, and thanks once again"and with it Violet Alloy left the room. "You know, Gravel" Night Light approached the Captain's table." I think she is in love." "Really Light, what gave it away?" The two looked at each other eyes for a second and then busted into laughter. It was already time to close the library, but Far Reach felt strange. It was the first time ever since he came to work in the library that Violet Alloy didn't come after her shift. He was worried, but he calmed down when the mail mare delivered him a simple note from said mare. To Far Reach, Sorry, I will not be able to visit you today and tomorrow because of work, but rest assured that after those days we will go out and travel, my boss already told me that I will have my off days. ~~Lov~~ Best regards Violet Alloy It was everything he needed to know. Then, sitting at his study table with his trusted quill, scroll and ink, he started to write in English some of his knowledge about the Equestrian species. Author's Note Hello people, Weaver here. So, the chapter got longer than expected, and because of that I chose to split it in two. One chapter focused on the main events and another focused on Far Reach's writings. Reach's Notes on the story of Equestria and Ponies uncommon Subspecies. //-------------------------------------------------------// 3. Reach's Notes on the story of Equestria and Ponies uncommon Subspecies. An Essay About Pony Culture, By F. Reach At this Reach smiled, if the version of him of six months ago saw him writing about himself with the name the locals call him, he would faint; but things were different now. In this essay, I aim to clarify many of the common misconceptions about the species and many of its subspecies, although some of those cultures have an isolationist attitude toward the rest of the world, making it hard to understand how they truly operate and behave. Reach stopped again trying to remember the scientific name of the species, only to remember that, because of the over reliance on magic of that culture, science never developed enough to earn this kind of categorization. First of all, Ponykind history is full of misconceptions, lies and deception, something that only an outsider could understand and see, I will touch on said subject a little far ahead in this text. Ponies (Equus Sapiens) as they like being called are anthropomorphic horses that can have all sort of color in their fur (coat), and mane (Hair and tail); they also possess something generally called "Destiny Brand" or "Cutie Mark". This particularly special "mark" shows itself in the shoulder of an individual and can't be hidden by any means beside clothes or other material – anything in the flesh (fur) that obscure the mark – like a tattoo – is just ignored by it and, by some unknown magical means, become a second-plane image. That being said, it was noted by Hippocrates (a famous hippogriff doctor of ancient times) that when the member where the mark resides is removed, it just changes place and retains all its prior properties. Reach's put a hand in his cheek, questioning himself about what he was writing, but he remembered that it was only the first draft and that no one in Equestria knew how to read English. “So, why not make some comparisons with humans?” And smiled. Physically speaking, the ponies are bipedal creatures that have a straight center of gravity, having two arms and two legs, the same as humans, but having Digigrade hooves instead of plantigrade feet (As humans do). The faces of the ponies are the perfect mixture of horse and human, with the eyes being bigger than that of a human, probably an adaptation to show more emotion - something helped by other physical clues like posture, ears flicking and even wings in the subspecies that have it; most of those were clearly unconscious. Interesting, it does not fall into the uncanny valley Reach was about starting writing about some points in the story and the social structure of Equestria, but he felt compelled to write something about a truth no one in that world should know. Note A: This world is indeed the same as the show that I saw while on earth, but... It is different. More dangerous. The colors are brighter and the dark more frightening. I really want to know what the hell is going on or even why I am here... but anyway, let's continue. Generally speaking, ponykind have a great affinity to the magic of this world, I would even say it is essential to their way of life. The problems with this arrangement is that those with greater affinity to magic have way more opportunities and status than those with less. This can be easily verified by just looking at the majority of nobles families, the great majority made of Unicorns. But, let leave the discussion about the subspecies for later. The history of the kingdom known as Equestria is, as I already stated, foggy at best and full of lies at worse. In all the history books I read, it is claimed that the three great tribes of ponies (Earth Ponies, Unicorn and Pegasus) accepted their difference and became a unity when faced with a magical blizzard, but I can't believe it. Of all the books I read on the theme, only one, written by an ancient Minotaur, spoke of something called "The unification war"; when the princess Celestia and Luna fought, with the help of some of the greater leaders of its time, to subjugate all the region under their rule and to quell any and all rebellion. Of course, this book is extremely rare and would be called blasphemy by any pony who lives under Celestia's wings. It was during the unification wars when a group known as "the pillars" appeared, they were the heroes of their times, and without them, it would be impossible for the land to be under one banner. Another great notable war that was down plaid in the stories books was "The Crystal War" were the King of the eponymous crystal Kingdom, a strange unicorn known as Sombra and his armies of a variation of ponies called, creatively, "crystal ponies" tried to annex part of the Equestrian Kingdom. Unfortunately for them, the princesses answer was quick and brutal, so brutal that, after some years of fighting, the entirety of the Crystal Kingdom disappeared. Whether it was destroyed by the princesses or not is a guess I'm not comfortable doing. Even so, looking at the maps, it seems that the King tried to do it to get more farmland as the weather of the place where the empire resided was extremely cold. Well, this is just my opinion. Anyway, some legends said that the king made some evil pact to save his citizen, others believe that everything was just a beautiful cover-up. What is certain is that there are still a few pockets of crystal ponies in the far north; and it is said that they hate princess Celestia for her part in the downfall of their empire. A subspecies that has held a grudge for so much time deserves, at least, respect on my part. And because of those few groups that reside in the north, the crystal ponies are considered a rare subspecies in Equestria. The last great conflict Equestria faced was the civil war led by princess Luna. The majority of books talking about the topic of this civil war were confiscated, but some journals of the combatants remained. For what I gathered, it can be assumed that Luna, aided in bulk by another unusual subspecies of ponies, the Thestrals (Bat ponies) and some noble, started a war for some unknown reason; but I know. It was because the princess in question was possessed by some dark force, and this force manipulated her and all her followers. Anyway, it is as clear as water that this is the reason why a great part of the population has a bias against the Thestals, whom they call pejoratively "bat ponies". Another factor to take is that, even so many centuries after the banishment of Luna, they are still incredibly loyal to her. For this reason they always keep to themselves, watching from their land in Hollow Shade the going on of Equestria – This is not a rule, even I have already seen some lone Thestrals walking here in Baltimare, but they are the exception, not the rule. That's why I, after finishing my research on the three great tribes, plan to go to Hollow Shade to know more about them. Reach smiled, It was a dream of him to leave Baltimare and know another place and Hollow shade really looked like a lovely place to him, at least he hoped Violet Alloy would love there. After contemplating the destination of his travel, he refocused on his writing. The last uncommon subspecies I want to speak of is the Zebras from the West continent; a group of mysterious and isolationist ponies that, by the writing of many authors, are practitioners of shamanism and the holders of many secrets. Maybe one day I will have the pleasure to go there and unveil them." After finishing the last line, Reach yawned. He didn't know how much time he had spent writing, but it was far more than he expected. So, he just rose up and walked to his bed on the second floor. He knew the next day would be fantastic, after all, who doesn't like to spend a day on the farm? //-------------------------------------------------------// 4. A day on the Farm. //-------------------------------------------------------// 4. A day on the Farm. Who doesn't like to spend a day on the farm? - Reach thought as he lifted a big cube of hay into a cart - By God, me! I don't like to spend a day on a farm! " Hey, sugar, is everything okay?" Spoke the country earth mare that was helping Reach to do his task. "O yeah... everything is just... PERFECT!" As Far Reach bent to lift another hay cube, he thought to himself how he got into this mess, but everything happened so fast that he just went with the flow. Wake up, eat breakfast and then go to the address Chocolate Harmony gave him yesterday. Her family at the farm was extremely friendly with him and, after he told them that Harmony had sent him, welcome him with open arms. The farm wasn't that big, having only a hay plantation and some animals, like those big birds those ponies used to ride and other farm animals, like pigs and sheep, that were used to produce raw material or to export. As Reach had come to the farm really early, they still had a whole day of hard work and told Reach to wait a little till noon, but he, always helpful, offered a helping hand. "I don't know, sugar, you don't look the type of pony who likes hard work..." spoke the matriarch of the house. "Miss, trust me. I can do it!" was Reach cheerful response. If he could interact with his past self, he would not speak to him, he would just hit him in the face right on the face. Either way, it was useless to think about his terrible life choices. Now he needed to focus on the work so that he would not bother Harmony's sister, Chocolate Evergrow, with his total lack of talent in hand works. " Okay, sugar, you can take a little break now" Evergrow had picked his angry tone from before and, by the flicker of her ears, didn't want to bother him much "I have a better idea of what you can do to help us." "Well, anything you say." Evergrow then looked at the sky and smiled. "You see, it's very hot today. Why don't you go to that cloud and make some rain for us?" She spoke with a hopeful smile, "It would be fantastic to get a refreshment now!" Far Reach looked at her with emotionless eyes, then at the cloud she was talking about, blinked three times and spoke in a tone of resignation and defeat. "Okay, let's see if I can lift more than one hay cube at the same time..." Chocolate Evergrow was confused at his reaction, but thinking that he may have his reasons, let him work in silence. It was finally noon, and the matriarch rang the bell announcing lunchtime. On their way to the main house from the hayfields, Reach and Evergrow spoke of many topics, and, in the end, Reach revealed his secret. He couldn't fly. "So, you're saying that you can't fly." "Yes." "But you're a PEGASUS!" "Yes." "I have NEVER met a ground Pegasus before!" Evergrow spoke loudly and excited "I CAN’T believe in this!" "Yes" at this point Reach wasn't even hearing her, answering as a mere reflex, didn't even notice that both were reaching the main house. "A grounded Pegasus?" Suddenly, a voice from inside the house could be heard as the matriarch approached the door "That explains why you know how to work hard!" Reach facepalmed, but it was useless to get angry, he knew none of them had any kind of malice in their comment, so he did the only thing he could do. He laughed. Loudly. The mother and daughter were confused at first, but followed him soon after with their own laugh. And with it, the trio entered to eat a well-deserved meal. The table was small, with only three chairs and, on a large table by the wall, a great number of dishes stood. Reach didn't know half of them, but he promised himself to try all of them. "So, Reach, what's your relation with my daughter?" Asked the matriarch. "Ma'am, she is one of my best friends" Reach answered while eating, "I go to her café with Alloy almost every day!" "Alloy?" "Yes, the mare that changed my life!" Reach answered without thinking while eating many different dishes at the same time. It took him a second to realize what he spoke. "Darn!" This time it was Chocolate Evergrow that spoke "And I was thinking she finally managed a good catch!" Reach eyes widened. The only thing in his mind was *Am I a good catch?* And he would ask something on that line when the matriarch spoke. " So, Reach, I believe you came here with something in mind besides helping my daughter" "Of course!" The Pegasus smiled again, "I'm writing a book, and I want to know how it is to be a true earth pony." "Hum... just that?" The matriarch quipped. "Yes, just a quick interview." "So it is a deal, we will do it." The matriarch then looked at her daughter and grinned, "after you help my poor Evergrow with ALL the animals." Evergrow smiled while Reach felt as if he was going to die, but he was happy. Helping good people is always a good thing; besides, the food was awesome. Celestia's sun started its descent in the sky to give space to the moon and, inside the captain's office in the barracks, three figures were getting ready for the eventuality of a fight. "Light, Alloy." Spoke Gravel, still adjusting her wing to her armor,"Are you two ready?" " Yes, Ma'am" Alloy answered quickly while putting her helmet and closing the visor "I already check my shield and my spear." "I'm ready too" Night Light complemented." But you have to remember, Gravel, we are not to engage in combat." "What are you talking about, Light?" Gravel opened her wings as she huffed in discontent." If we can make the arrest, we will do it!" Night Light just shook his head. He was friends with Gravel Wing for some years now, and he always found her propensity to engage in fights first and think about lather rather... problematic. " Listen, Gravel, Callaghan is not your run-of-the-mill criminal" Night Light looked dead serious at the captain's eyes while sheathing his long sword "We don't know what his goal is or if he has allies here. By Celestia, we have no intel on how strong he really is!" "More reasons to stop him before he does something dangerous, right, Alloy?" Alloy didn't answer, her mind was in a small floor's library, where a certain amnesiac Pegasus was writing a book. "Alloy, are you there?" Gravel poked Alloy with the point of her bow, making her jump with a 'EEP' "you best stay alert during our mission." "Yes, Ma'am." Sorry, Ma'am" "Anyway, I will take my sword with the blacksmith, and then we shall go." Spoke Gravel with a serious tone. "I will also prepare our support team to be ready to enter the scene as soon as we need them." " Yes, Ma'am." Night Light and Violet Alloy answered in unison. But in his mind, Night Light had a bad feeling about it. About everything. //-------------------------------------------------------// 5. Reach's Notes on Equestrian Society and Culture. //-------------------------------------------------------// 5. Reach's Notes on Equestrian Society and Culture. Far Reach has achieved his goal, but had to pay a price. And what a price it was. Now all his body was in pain for the physical effort he did, something that not even the kind family of Chocolate Harmony could help. To make matters worse, he had no news of Alloy in the entire day. It wasn't like her to do something like this, and, looking out through the window and seeing the light of the moon shine, it was already quite late. Because he didn't know what to do about his dear friend, he did the only thing that, even when he was on Earth, helped him to take his mind off his worries. And what he did was work. Sitting by the table and preparing his quill and scroll, Reach thought a little about what to write and how to write, finally reaching the conclusion that, as no one would read his notes, he didn't have the need to write all formal. And with this new perspective in mind, he started. Notes about Equestrian Society and Culture. One of the most incredible things in equestrian society is the ratio of male to female, a fact that molded the entire culture along the thousands of years it has existed; and it is a stark contrast with the human male to female ratio. When on Earth the proportion are relatively close, here in equestria the number of mares far surpass the number of stallions, and because of that reality, many behaviors credited as manly on Earth are firmly held by females in Equestria. Normally, in Equestria, males are considered the fragile sex; of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but the great majority of stallion accept this fact and just "go with it". What I mean is that, in a relationship, it is expected that, after the mare pregnancy, the stallion is the one that takes care of the house and foals while the mare works and provides for the family. Another good example is the courtship. Here, it is expected that the mare take the lead and "hook" the stallion with her charms, while the stallion acts more like a sitting duck waiting to be picked by some female. This is so engrained in the culture that when a stallion does not conform with those behaviors, the mare's become shocked as if it was something from another world. Yes. Here the stallions are painfully passive, with only some exception. Even I, who came from earth and was an antisocial nerd, am much better than them, and I am extremely shy! (At least, I hope) Anyway, the relationships in Equestria advance quickly in the majority of cases and are, by the time I am writing this, mostly monogamous. I'm saying this because I read that until some decades ago the common practice was doing something called "herding", where a stallion would hook up with two or more mares, the first being the "alpha mare" and the leader of the group, but as I said, this practice is falling off favor with the newer generation. This "herding" thing is actually incredible to outsiders like me, and a fantastic way to ensure the success of the species, seeing how the ratio of male to female is. This ratio also manifests itself as the majority of mares have an innate desire to protect the stallion as they are, "Weak-willed individuals, who only go where is said". An interesting point in this is that the ratio was perfect to the rise of a powerful matriarchal frame, where the mares are normally in positions of power like mayors, military commanders, and even more. The fact that their leader is an immortal demigoddess of the sun probably helps even more these concepts Reach stopped writing and yawned, opening his wings at the same time. He questioned how he felt pain in the wing when they were stretched, as he had never fly. With a tired look, Reach dipped the point of the quill in the bottle of ink and prepared to continue putting his ideas in the paper. Equestria and Religion I like to make a point here. From everything I saw ever since I was sent to Equestria, nothing is more similar to the human culture than their religion. Of course, not their main religion, but the other ones. The main religion is called "The Way Of Harmony", and it is not a proper religion, but more a way of life that ALL ponies have a tendency to adopt in a way or another. The Way of Harmony says that there's a force that binds us all together, all living things and even the ones that have already departed, and one should not judge by race, gender, or even social class. All is one, and one is all. It is said that there are six main tenets of this religion, each one represented by one of those Elements of Harmony that appeared in the first episode of the show. Honesty; The principle of being true to yourself and to others. Loyalty; The essence of trust between different creatures or even close friends. Kindness; The idea of empathy, to understand other and to know how to help and even if it is necessary to do so... And, besides, selfishness leads one to the dark side. Generosity; Those who give without expecting something in return are the richer beings in the world. Of course, no one told this to the dragons. Laughter; Some say that laughter is food for the soul, but I believe that laughter is something that brings different people together... even so, I'm not certain about it. Really, I am truly confused about it. Maybe I should ask alloy about it when we have time. MAGIC; of course, this is the last one, and it is the one that kinda prioritize unicorns as the best representatives of the cult of harmony because they have magic horns. Yes, I'm bitter with unicorns because they have access to magic, and I can't even fly. This cult is truly beautiful and amazing, linking everyone together. Yet, it is incomplete. Some time ago, I read in a book that "half of one can never be complete". What I mean is that, centuries ago, a cult called "The path of Chaos" was banned in equestria and hunted down by the Church of Sol (I will speak of them later); the problem of this is that harmony represents stability while chaos represents change. Without chaos, this world just stagnate. What may explain the slow development of new technologies, and even advancements in magic, is in this land. Another pseudo cult that appeared in Equestria is "The way of the warrior" and showed itself as pretty popular between the meat-eating species and some groups of Pegasus. By what I read, it is a mix of something similar to the Japanese Bushido, that was bought by the Foxes when they came from the East, and a Nordic way of thinking that was already strong in the far north with yaks and Minotaur's. The result was the creation of the way of the warrior, something with some core tenants, but that can be adjusted by any species and their liking. This way of thinking is noted taking roots in Minoa (Minotaur), the dragon Lands, Griffonstone, with the foxes of the north, Zebras and even wolves. Of course, this is only what I know... maybe there's more to it. More importantly, this way of thinking is especially strong with the quartet of Dragons, Foxes, Minotaur and Griffons – they love it and made "the way of the warrior" an integral part of their culture. The principal tenants of this creed are- KABOOM! The sound of a massive explosion came from the south of his house-library, scaring him and making him jump in fright. Then another one came. Another one. And Another. Far Reach was confused, but he knew that this sound was bad news, and while flapping his wings uselessly, Far Reach ran up the stairs and reached the highest window he had in his home. From there he could see the dark smoke and dancing lights of flames coming from the docks. Author's Note Yo, Weaver's Here! So, I will not be able to post Sunday because I will be DMing for some friends; which means that I will be posting today! (31/07) https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/twilightsmile.png By the way, the next chapter is almost over; if I have time, I will release it tomorrow. :pinkiecrazy: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/pinkiecrazy.png See you all later. :pinkiehappy: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/pinkiehappy.png //-------------------------------------------------------// 6. Lights OUT! //-------------------------------------------------------// 6. Lights OUT! Night Light walked slowly throughout the halls of the Canterlot School for Gifted Unicorns; his goal was the lovely librarian that had stolen his heart, and in no time he found the mare that was alerted by his heavy steps. - Light! - Twilight Velvet put down the book she was reading and ran to him wearing a bright smile that made his heart melt. - Sorry, I'm late... - Night Lite was a little awkwardly, but he hit his sturdy armor with his left arm as a sigh of bravura to her - We had a little problem, and they needed us... When Night Light made the movement with his arm, Twilight Velvet saw a small fillet of blood escape from his biceps, she knew his job was dangerous – not anyone can claim to be part of the CTSA or the Canterlot Team of Search and Arrest – but even so, she felt fear. - Mister Night Light, it is decided - Twilight took some steps off Night Light, pointed a finger at him as if lecturing him - You will learn some magic! - Wait, what? - Light rose both hands defensively - I'm a warrior, besides, I already know the basics of magic and... Night Light stopped when he looked at his soon-to-be wife, and she was puffing her cheeks in an adorkable way. He knew it was useless to argue with her, so he just sighed. - Okay, Velvet... But just one spell, okay? Twilight Velvet just smiled and, full of joy, jumped in her colt friend's arms. The cold air of the night sent chills down Night Light's spine as he, Violet Alloy and Captain Gravel surveilled the perimeter. The trio was atop of a building that offered plenty of view of the buildings at the pier, and of the many boats and ships docked there – many of them part of the Royal Army. All around them, the support team was getting into their position in the clouds around the area as a weak rain started to fall. That was when Alloy, that was using a magical telescope to aid the search, whispered. Found them. A warehouse at the end of the pier, two griffons guard at the entrance – she side glanced at Gravel – they don't even seem to bother trying to hide their weapons. Night Light and Violet Alloy - Gravel spoke firmly but quietly - each of you will take one guard. Then we will start the raid. Light and Alloy nodded. It took less than ten minutes for Night Light and Violet Alloy to be in their respective positions, each sneaking quietly to the sides of the warehouse. The soft sound of rain disguising their hooves sounds, making the two door guards oblivious of their presence. Even so, Night Light and Alloy were cautious and, with a node at each other, advanced at the same time to incapacitate the guards. There was no scuffle or fight, just the thud of the pummel of Night Light's sword hitting the bird in the back of the head, and the gasp of air of the other who was being choked by Alloy. When both Griffon guards were unconscious, Gravel glided from her position in the clouds, with the spear ready at hand. Gravel was serious, and her dark semblance was accented by the drops of water over her helmet. She didn't speak, nor she needed to do so. As she approached, Alloy and Light prepared to open each one of the sides of the big warehouse door. It was now or never, and Gravel would be the one to advance as soon as the door opened. What no one knew was that, deep down, she desired to fight the fierce opponent behind the door; she was a warrior, after all. Callaghan was arched over a big table where the map of the entire Equestria was, as his two daggers. He shuffled his blood-red feathers as his beak contorted with a sinister smile while he wiped his lion tale. Those stupid ponies will not even see what hit'em. - Callaghan took his special dagger from the table and marked two other cities on the map – this will be might funny. Maybe the headmistress will let me have some of the prisoners we get to... His train of thoughts were stopped by the loud sound of the doors being forcibly opened; when Callaghan looked at its origins, he found an armored Pegasus pony flying in his direction with a spear ready to impale him. Callaghan was caught in surprise, but he was far from unprepared, and as the tip of the spear approached his chest, Callaghan flap his wing while a silvery mist surrounded him, and he disappeared, only to reappear by the right side of his assailant and, with incredible speed, hitting it in the spot between the wing two times with his special dagger. The last attack was not alone, as when the tip of the dagger pierced the armor and hit the flesh, a torrent of magic was released when the griffon muttered simply: *Blood Blast!* The attack caused an explosion, mangling the Pegasus wings, scattering its feathers and sending it into the wall, where it lay inert. Callaghan then looked at its enemy companions as its feathers slowly fell after the explosion, and seeing the reaction of the two ponies at the entrance, he returned his sinister smile; his patron would be happy with his new offering. But why end the game so soon? It seems that this one is already broken - Callahan calmly retrieved his other dagger from the table while the two ponies processed what just happened - You know, this is the part where you two beg for your life. When the door opened, Night Light didn't expect Gravel's action of flying right on the enemy or its quick reaction in dealing with her; even worse, it seemed that this griffon had access to magic. And now he Night Light was at the door, speechless, the same as his companion Violet Alloy, while Gravel was lying on the ground, wings mangled and with the back of her armor torn out by the attack she received, with an armed and dangerous griffon close to her. It seems that this one is already broken – the red griffon spoke coldly while retrieving his other dagger from the table at the center of the warehouse while the two ponies tighten their grip on the weapons and shield – You know, this is the part where you two beg for your life. Night Light knew this griffon was not bluffing, he had the skills to back up his words; Gravel was heavily injured, maybe even in a life-threatening way, and because of that he needed to act fast. Alloy. - Night light murmured, his eyes locked on the red griffon facing him while a faint glow of light started to gather around his horn - On my clue, fetch Gravel and get out of here. We need backup. Now. Yes, sir. And what, in heaven's name, make you believe I will let you take this corpse and get help? - spoke Callaghan, still smiling in disdain - I will kill you two before that! Night Light answer was not words, but action. Raising his shield, he advanced swinging his sword with the experience of many years, only to be parried by the griffon with both daggers that then, flapping his wings, got a little space between the two only to hit Night Light with his clawed paws. Night Light's helmet was sent flying by Callahan's kick. In the background of the fight, Violet Alloy ran and reached her captain, quickly understanding the gravity of her injuries. Carefully, Alloy grabbed Gravel, holding her in her back. But she couldn't see an opening to the front door, as the path was blocked by the two combatants that had reengaged. Light, I need an opening! On it - Night Light spoke, his mane disheveled and moving with the winds of his moves, and with a strong bash of his shield he made Callaghan retreat a little. Do you think this is enough for me to let them pass? No, but this might do! - Night light's horn started shining in his pale blue magic as memories of Twilight velvet flooded his mind - LIGHTS OUT! Night Light yelled, and from the tip of his horn a wave of magical darkness flowed, engulfing Callahan for a moment; enough time for Alloy to run to the exit. Callaghan was furious, he would not let them escape. Because of that, he remembered a skill he had never used before, an ability that could change everything. Lady Carmila, daughter of the abyss, make your eyes mine! - Callaghan murmured, making a small cut in his right hand with his special dagger, only for his eyes to start shining with a crimson red energy. Even so, Callaghan couldn't see well, only the shadow forms of his enemies. Then, pointing the tip of his dagger to the shadow carrying another – The Unicorn mare with the injured Pegasus. The smile returned to Callaghan's beak as he uttered his words. *Blood Blast!* From the dagger, the blood-red energy was emitted and hurled at the running pony, only for the other pony to intercept. The strength of the explosion was enough that the darkness of the magic cast by the unicorn was dispelled in all directions, leaving only Night Light, with his raised shield, to face him. The force of the attack confirmed Night Light's fears as its strength was enough to deform his shield, but even in the face of this frightening opponent, Night Light was determined not to bow down. Instead, he threw his shield to the side and held his long sword with both hands, the tip pointed to the red griffon. My name is Night Light from the CTSA - He spoke slowly and deliberately with a stern voice - and by the authority of Princess Celestia, you are under arrest! Callaghan was furious with the boldness of this pony, a pony that made him lose two of his preys. He, too, made a decision. I am going to BUCKING KILL YOU! Author's Note Observations: Blood Blast is a variation on Eldritch Blast, with a different type of damage. //-------------------------------------------------------// 7. CALLAGHAN, THE RED //-------------------------------------------------------// 7. CALLAGHAN, THE RED It was the worst drought that the Land of the Griffons had faced in more than centuries, and, unlike the other times, they are not prepared. Worse yet, the pride of the powerful griffon leaders backed by part of their citizens would not let them ask for the help of their neighbor countries. As famine and poverty scattered around the country, many young chicks died in the arms of their family while they fought not to prosper, but to survive. It was in this scenario that Callaghan found himself, a young guard, in a small village next to the Guto River that at this point was drying. His white feathers and his fiery eyes made even the most seasoned burglar rethink their actions. But, with everything that was happening, the guard stipend provided by the crown was not enough. Seeing the member of the village he was supposed to protect suffer was too much for him and, combined with his rage against his own condition, made him take a drastic decision, and after a few days talking to some of his peers, he was ready. Stealing some weapons and armors from the barrack's armory, the band spearheaded by Callaghan travelled north, to a metal structure that linked the Griffon lands to Equestria; the place was still under construction, but it was enough for some convoys sent by the ponies to pass by. Of course, the ponies would try to help the griffons, even if in hidden ways, they were way too soft. And those convoys were the perfect target for Callaghan and his band of outlaws. And for three years the group delighted themselves in money, fabrics and food coming from the land of the ponies. But one day, everything changed. Everything was alright at first, even the number of members in the convoy, and it seemed that it was filled with goods; the perfect target. So, as if they were vultures on a carcass, they landed in front of the merchants. That's when, from the wagons, a group of Pegasi warriors rose. They were hiding inside with weapons ready, just waiting for the gang to approach—and Callaghan and their troupe fell under their trap. After that, it was a bloodbath. The last one to fall under the ponies’ might was Callaghan himself, that full of seeing his friends bleed out, refused to stay down. While he fought with all his might, he managed to get an advantage under the mare he was facing, but when he was going to finish her, an arrow pierced him in the shoulder. An Arrow sent by a blue stallion with a rainbow mane. - Windy, be careful! - yelled the stallion - Thanks, Bow. - returned the pale blue mare, never taking her eyes from Callaghan - anyway, he can't fight anymore. She was right. He was bleeding, weak from all the fighting and exhausted. Even so, he refused to give those ponies the pleasure of defeating him, and with everything he got, he tried to rise once again – only to meet the pummel of Windy Whistles short sword and fall unconscious. When Callaghan awoke, he was in jail and, by the architecture of the place and the terrible food, he was still in the griffon kingdom. There he stood for five years, his fury against all the ponies growing by the day while the image of his former friends never left his mind; in special the fury against those two ponies that managed to lead the attack against his group, the rainbow mane stallion and that mare's name "Windy". But one day he received a visit, a young and noble female griffon wearing noble regalia; her steps were calculated, her owl head showed wisdom and power. In her chest, a single badge – a badge that the oldest griffons spoke off as if it was a legend – with the single of a black claw grasping a white heart. She was, undoubtedly, a member of the dark claw; the legendary group of griffon know to never interfere in anything unless absolutely necessary. - Callaghan, I presume. - The owl spoke, her beautiful voice reaching inside him and squashing his heart at the same time - I heard a lot of you. - The same, Ma'm - Callaghan was sitting at the end of his cell - what'cha want? - I came to you with an offer, nothing less, nothing more. - The owl replayed while taking a coin from her beautiful dark robe and, with a flimsy movement, trowing it at Callaghan's paw - Callaghan, you are weak. If you are ready to make a sacrifice for power and obey me, I will take you out of here. - And why would I obey you? - Callaghan took the coin to look at it, it seemed ancient—what can you give me? - Freedom. Callaghan laughed, It had been years since he stopped desiring his freedom. - Vengeance. This took Callaghan by surprise and, by the smile in that owl face, she knew it; she then, with a simple gesture, made the loyal guards of the crown open his cell. - Now, Callaghan. Come with me. - And if I say no? - Callaghan spoke in a jest while getting up, but the owl looked at him with the corner of her eyes, and a shill went down his spine. After that, he followed her in silence. Not long after getting out of the perimeters of the barracks where Callaghan passed the last few years, the two griffons started to fly. The owl was leading, and Callaghan was behind, having a hard time trying to accompany her. It was not that he was a bad flyer, but she was really fast. - Next hour you will have a chance to get an enormous amount of power - The owl spoke calmly to the griffon behind - but you will have only one chance. - understood, I was hankerin' for it. - Answered Callaghan - Now, tell me, lady, what's your darn name? - I don't have to tell you yet... - Callaghan could swear she was smiling, but with the effort he was making to accompany her, he couldn't be certain. - But you can call me "Second". - Understood. It didn't take long for the griffons to reach a strong and ominous looking castle that had five black towers around it and big and sturdy defensive walls, seemingly to be built on some special kind of black stones. The griffons than landed in a small entrance in one of the towers, a place full of potions, some kind of lab, and many symbols written in red ink on the floor and walls. - Welcome Callaghan to my home. - Second... is this ? - Yes, Callaghan, this is where your test will be taking part - Second pointed at the biggest symbol in the center of the room, where many symbols had been written – you just need to enter the circle with the coin and meditate a little. If everything goes as planned, you may become part of us. - Us? - Callaghan had an idea about what she meant, but he couldn't believe it. - What do you mean by us? - The dark Claw. We're recruiting. - "Second" stated – you were on our radar for a time, but the problem is that you are weak. But I want you to participate in our group regarless of it. - what! - I want to make you strong using this ritual. The only thing you need to do is not fail. - hum... - Callaghan was looking at the circle with uncertainty - And if I fail? - Let's not talk about it. - Did someone participate in this "ritual" before, Ma'm? - As I said, I will not disclose any information before you go through the ritual. - Then Callaghan felt something, an oppressing presence coming from "Second" body, bloodlust - And if you refuse it now, I will have to act accordingly. Callaghan shook his head, he had already decided not to back down, but, now, he had no way to do it. He calmly walked into the strange red circle painted on the ground, sat and, holding the strange coin, closed his eyes. For a moment nothing happened, but after some minutes he felt his entire body getting numb and heard "Second" voice muttering strange words, if he didn't know better, he would believe they were some kind of arcane words. That was the moment he felt his body burning, as if his entire body was lit on fire at that moment, and in that excruciating pain, he black out. Callahan woke to the sound of a thousand voices screaming in pain, and the cries of uncountable beings suffering. He was floating, and yet he could not feel his body nor close his eyes or ears. He was there, but not his body, and his vision of everything around was distorted. That's when a voice called him by his name. - Callaghan, you shouldn't be here yet - comes the female voice from somewhere in that cursed place - What did I do to deserve such a great guest? - Who... Who's there? In front of Callaghan, an enormous creature manifested. She was beautiful and, at the same time, extremely menacing. By what he could see, she was more than 3 meters tall; she looked like a pony, but her pointy teeth betrayed her diet; her fur was blood-red, she had a slightest curved horn in the same color as the fur in her forehead; a leathery black wing adorned her back and her mane, darker than the abyss itself, descended back till her hip; all while her regalia exhibiting the power that kings and queen always desired to attain in their lives, but never could. I'm Fayin, the great fury - spoke the demoness - but your kind call me Carmila, the bird of war and blood. Callaghan could not believe who he was meeting, he even tried to bow down, but without his body, it was useless. Fayin giggled at his action. Do not try to flatter me, Callaghan, I have been watching you ever since you decided to quit being your king's dog - Fayin spoke - and it seems that the dark claw managed to discover it. "That must be the reason they took you to try this... experiment of theirs. Normally, I would just chain your soul here and make you my slave for all eternity and send some of my servants to inhabit the hollow body. But fear not, Callaghan, you are different from the others, and I have a deal for you that might be good for us both." At the tower, Callaghan woke. His mind full of arcane secrets and the power of Carmila, the bird of blood, flowing through his body. This power flowing inside him was so great that all his feathers became red as blood – the same color as his patron. Looking ahead, he saw "Second" analyzing him with a small scroll in her hand. - Are you Callaghan, or I will have to dispose of you too? - I am Callaghan... the red. - Perfect. Now our numbers are complete. - "Second" placed her scroll over one of the many tables scattered around the place - Come, Callaghan, let's discuss... the war. My name is Night Light from the CTSA - He spoke slowly and deliberately with a stern voice - and by the authority of Princess Celestia, you are under arrest! Callaghan was furious with the boldness of this pony, a pony that made him lose two valuable sacrifices for his patron; he wanted to kill him, he wanted to dismember him, he wanted to make him PAY. Callaghan strengthened the grip on his two daggers and shuffled his wings as his red feathers scattered. I am going to BUCKING KILL YOU! Callaghan shouted, his mind going completely blank as an untold fury took hold of his mind and tendrils of blood-red tendril of magic erupted from his back. The gift of Carmila, the bird of war and blood. But this wasn't what was on Callaghan's mind, the only thing he could focus on was destroying the pony in front of him. Night Light was taken aback by the sudden change of Callaghan's posture, plus the tendrils of some kind of red magic show to him that there was more at play. But what really made Night Light enter a defensive position was the changes in Callaghan's physical body. His eyes were bulging with madness, his muscles were growing and expanding unnaturally, and as the griffon screamed in some kind of trance-induced fury, his dagger became enveloped by the red magical energy that came from his back. This made Night Light change his mind and, with his hooves firmly place on the ground, he advanced swinging his long sword with all his might against the now oversize griffon, who blocked it with an attack of his own; the strength of the impact almost ripping the blade from Night Light's hands and trowing him off balance. Callaghan didn't lose time, not aiming, not thinking, just striking each time with one of his magic-coated daggers; each time the griffon attacks grew in power. Night Light tried to protect himself, but his stamina started to face, he couldn't hold his sword for long, and, while trying to retreat a few steps, he fell down on his rump. Callaghan didn't give Night Light any time to breathe, stepping forward for another strike, but, at the same moment, a spear flew through the air and pierced the berserker avian in the stomach; when he looked back at the source of the unexpected attack, there was Violet Alloy. That was the chance Night Light was waiting, and in the second Callaghan looked at his attacker, he plunged forward with holding his sword with both hands – Piercing the avian in the chest with his long sword. Callaghan tried to scream, but no sound came from his beak. He tried to get out of the blade piecing him, but he had no strength left. And, without any reservation, he let his mind go to the darkness. Up in the clouds, two figures stood proudly while watching all the battle inside the warehouse. When it all ended, one of the figures, a young female griffon with the head of an owl and wearing regal regalia, spoke. I saw enough. He almost failed. Second sister, you were expecting too much of him - spoke the second figure, a female griffon with the head of a Pallid harrier, and wearing a dark blue armor, answered - Besides, mother didn't like him that much. You are not wrong, fifth sister, but for some reason Carmila had an interest in him. But this doesn't matter anymore – The Second sister took a small red stone from her robes – now, are you ready for the fireworks? The Fifth sister nodded, and with her talons the Second sister crushed the small stone. Not even a second later, the equestrian ships anchored into the Horse Shoe bay started to glow, only to explode in the next moment. The power of the explosion was enough to scatter the clouds above. The entirety of the Equestrian marine fleet that was stationed in Baltmare was gone into ashes. The Second Sister smiled, even if he was dead now, Callaghan, or the Eighth Brother, did this part of his job well. Vert well. Fifth Sister, I am going to check if they're done their work on Fillydelphia; Third brother and seventh sister are there. And you? I am going to stay a little more - The fifth sister had her eyes glued to the smoke and debris of the massive explosion - Mother said that there was a rumor about a pony being a human and to retrieve him. It wouldn't take long. Understood. By the way, what about the first sister? - Asked the fifth- I heard she had come too. She is in Manehattan. You don't need to worry about her, since she is the strongest of us. fifth smiled and nodded. and with that, the second sister flew north, leaving the fifth sister alone in the cloud, admiring the embers of the formers embarkations. Author's Note Hello, friends, Weaver here. So, I have SIX things to announce. This chapter is the one I would release tomorrow, but as it is Father's Day in my country, I will not have any access to the internet... so here you have it. How the buck is called a Female Griffon? A chick? I HAVE NO IDEA! PLEASE, SOMEONE, HELP ME! There is a slim chance I will have to delay the next chapter, but I am not certain (yet); anyway, I will update the situation on my blog. I will post the map I'm using to tell the story on my blog. But I will probably put it here too. I just need to find the source. This chapter was special. Not all of them will be so long. I am planning posting character status, what do you all think about it? That's it. See you all later. :pinkiehappy: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/pinkiehappy.png //-------------------------------------------------------// 8. In the Reach of the dark //-------------------------------------------------------// 8. In the Reach of the dark In the Reach of the dark The soft beat of the rain and the fire rising at the docks made Far Reach enter some kind of trance. He couldn't think right about anything as a bunch of worries grew inside his heart. He knew that if something like that happened, Alloy's presence would be essential to help any pony that got injured or worse... And this thought made him angry. He wished he could be stronger and be with her. He wished he could help her in her fights. But there he was. A Pegasus who couldn't even fly. And in his anger, he hit the wall with his hoof before stepping back to sit at his bed. Both hands holding his head as, after so much time trying to adapt to that world, everything fell down. As tears started slowly to escape his eyelids, Far Reach started to murmur to himself in a low voice, attempting and failing to hold his fears and sadness. I... I am alone... uttered alone - the hold of his head tightened as the tear started to flow freely - she is there... and I am useless! Between gags and tear, the low tone of Reach started to rise; his cheeks getting redder by the mixture of emotions. I SHOULD BE DEAD! - he yelled to himself - WHY AM I HERE? WHY I HAVE TO SUFFER EVERYTHING AGAIN? "FOR GOD'S SAKE, WHY AM I ALIVE! I CAN VIVID REMEMBER BEING SHOT BY THOSE THUGS, SO, GOD, WHY? I TRIED MY BEST AND GIVE MY ALL IN THE FIRST TIME TO LEARN EVERYTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS JUST SO COULD BE SHOT AND AWAKE HERE? A PLACE WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY, ONLY MAGIC! FUCKING MAGIC! THIS MUST BE SOME KIND OF JOKE; A FUCKING GODLY JOKE! A WORLD OF PONIES... Ponies that have a heart of gold..." His rage was subsiding, but not his sadness; but not his worry with that mare. Trying to sort his mind, Reach just lied on his bed; eyes glued into the ceiling, his voice becoming quieter by the second. Ponies that welcome me with open arms, even when I was in jail... - he put one arm on his eyes, a small smile forming amidst the tears - Ponies that accepted me without questions and... gave me a home, a job, and even friendship. "Shit, I'm an idiot. I should stop complaining and just support her... I should be happy to just have a second chance and try to live to the fullest... funny... I can't even imagine what the guys would say if they knew that I am having feelings for a Mare..." Far Reach spoke with a little giggle, and yet there he stood, still looking at the ceiling and thinking about everything that happened in the last six months, he was right. He really had developed feelings for the guard-mare, and there was nothing he could do. This acceptance made him blush. That's when he heard the sound of the front door of the library opening, and, by being so late in the night, in the mind of Far Reach there was only one person who would come to visit him. Violet Alloy. His heart started pumping fast, and jumping from his bed, Far Reach started running as fast as he could in the direction of the stairs and, with some careful steps, he started the descent. The first floor of the library looked like a haunted place into Reach's eyes, and he could feel a chill up his spine. And as he stepped down the next step, he could see how the place got strange. Far more strange than when he left. Reaching the first floor, Reach walked carefully, trying not to hit anything while looking around in the search for some light as all the candles he had lit up before were off, and he felt as if a heavy, unnatural darkness was hovering over him. Alloy, are you here? The answer came with the piercing sensation of something on his left wing, something that had enough strength not only to pierce his wing but also to pin him against the wall on his back. The pain was enormous, almost the same as the bullet, maybe more; and as a reflex, Far Reach tried to scream, but a talon like hand reached his muzzle before he could. So you are the human the rumors were talking about? - spoke the unknown assailant with a feminine voice - I thought you would be bigger. Far reach didn't know what to do, as he was pinned down by something in his wing and had someone atop of him. Even so, he tried to yell, only to feel another pain in the right wing. His assailant had pierced him with something in both wings, and he could feel clearly the warm blood seeping. No. No. No. - spoke the attacker, an attacker that Reach could now see the silhouette of a beak and big wings - Big sister didn't tell you that you could scream... yet... And, finally, Far Reach could see that he was dealing with some kind of griffon, or maybe a hen by the voice, but while Reach was trying to identify the enemy, he felt another surge of pain. The hen had kneeled on his groin, making tears flow with his suffering. As a reflex, he closed his eyes and pulled his wings, only for the injury in them to hurt even more. You know, big sister here doesn't like it when you make a face like this, maybe your big sister should teach you some manner? - Reach didn't have recovered from the hit when he felt something sharp slide over his check, maybe another weapon - besides, they only told me to take you... not to do it without some fun. This time, before the hen could do anything, Far reach started making noises, as if he had something important to say. The hen was not in a hurry, no one knew she was there, and it was the first time in a long while that she had been assigned a target, and she wanted to enjoy each second of it. Oh, my little brother wants to speak? How cute! - The hen smiled, putting the tip of her weapon against Reach's crotch - But if you try to scream, I will take your "sword". After she spoke, the hen giggled and, slowly, took out her talon like hand of Far Reach's mouth. Because of the constant pain on his wings, Reach was out of breath, but he could still mutter. You... will… pay... for... This? - The hen cackled while hitting Reach in the face - and who will make me pay? Your mare-friend? A fillet of blood escaped Reach's muzzle, but before he could speak, the hen continued. You know, she really was strong... maybe she could make me pay... oh my! - The hen was mocking Far Reach with her hand over her beak, faking fear - Luck that your big sister doesn't need to worry about her anymore, and I can have you ALL for myself! -What? - even in the darkness, Far Reach's eyes widened – What do you MEAN? Oh! Sorry, I forgot you didn't know! - The hen cackled once again - That unicorn was strong and fought bravely, but the best part was when I stabbed her, and she spoke your name! Such a romantic act! Wh...what? IT... IT CAN'T BE! But it is true. SHE.IS.DEAD! - hearing her words, Far Reach broke, and the hen laughed loudly. She had her fun, now she was going direct to business and, with a simple hit with the pommel of her weapon on Reach's head, made him unconscious. Ah, little brother, a shame I can't continue playing with you - she spoke almost rhythmic while taking out the daggers she had plunged unto Reach's wings - maybe your big sister will have a chance to play with... The hen stopped, the ears peaking. Something had landed outside the front door of the library. Her mission was to be invisible, a ghost. But now that she had acquired the target, something had come into her way. She was going to pick up Far Reach with her arms and ran to the second floor to try to fly by the window when the door was broken open, splinters flying everywhere. As the light of the moon pierced inside the library, a pony stepped in. By the size of the pony, it was a mare and, by the wings, the hen believed it was one of those Pegasus, but soon she perceived that the wing had no feather and the coat was almost dark. Move away from the Pegasus and back off, or you're going to regret it. - spoke the newly arrived. Do you think you can take me on alone? Maybe I can, maybe not. - The bat pony mare pointed a weapon at the hen - that's why I brought reinforcements. As if with the clue, the hen could hear many "clicks" of at least a dozen crossbows outside the library. The hen was strong, strong enough to claim the fifth position on the dark claw, but it wasn't her specialty taking down an entire battalion – even more one made of those darn bat-ponies – Bat-ponies that, if what she heard was correct, were few in numbers but compensate with dedication and strength. Fifth slowly retreat to the stairs, leaving the unconscious Pegasus in the ground and, running to the window on the second floor, she escaped. She lost this round, but she would follow him, and she would, inevitably, attain her "human" target. No matter what. Captain, should we pursue her? - asked a Thestral stallion armed with a crossbow. No, our priority is the Pegasus, not his pursuer. Besides, the count said that those behind this attack would come for him no matter where he may be, so this hen will probably follow us - The Thestral captain made a gesture and another Thestral mare landed by her side - Quick, apply first aid on him. We're taking him with us to Hollow Shades. The captain pointed at the Thestral stallion that made the first question. You stay and tell the guards that we took him by the orders of the count – then she turn the whole battalion – NOW, YOUR BUNCH OF WORM-EATERS, WE FLY. WE WILL REACH HOLLOW SHADES BEFORE THE SUN RISE. UNDERSTOOD? UNDERSTOOD! - all the captain soldiers replied. Author's Note So... I had an extra time this week, so I'm posting this chapter today. Why? Because I have anxiety and I already have other chapters ready. So, the chapter of Sunday's chapter will still be release on Sunday. See ya. (Btw, I love comments, they make us write better. So if you have any comment, opinion or even correction to make... Go crazy!) //-------------------------------------------------------// 9. Preparations for the Storm //-------------------------------------------------------// 9. Preparations for the Storm Preparations for the Storm Baltimare barracks was a mess, guards were trotting and running from side to side without knowing what to do in such an emergency, and the captain of the station, Gravel Wings, was hospitalized in critical condition with a real risk of losing her wings. Inside the office of the injured captain, around her working table, three ponies were discussing the current situation. Sitting on Gravel Wings chair was Night Light, and facing him was the chief of the guard forces of Baltmare, Lady Saphire; both of them were locked in a fiery argument. By the door stood Violet Alloy holding her spear, trying not to look bothered by the fact that he wanted to be in a certain library. Saphire, are you DUMB? - Night Light yelled and slammed the table with his hands, pointing at the map recovered in the warehouse - Do you REALLY think he was working alone? "Look, there are markings here in Baltmare, in Fillydelphia and even in Manehatan! All places that suffered attacks yesterday!" And what you want to say with this, Mister Night Light? - Replied the earth pony mare with a posh accent - Do you really believe in this conspiracy? This is but a coincidence, nothing more. A COINCIDENCE? - Night light was almost screaming, sparks flying from his horn as his anger grew - How many ponies DIED because of this 'COINCIDENCE'? "SAPPHIRE, BY THE LIGHT OF CELESTIA SUN, LISTEN TO ME, THE ENTIRE MARINE FLEET OF EQUESTRIA WAS DESTROYED IN ONE NIGHT! THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE!" Sapphire was taken aback by Night Light's reaction. She knew very well that Night Light was known for his patience, something that he wasn't showing, but even so, it seemed too convenient for some ponies to do an elaborate plan like this. And even if it was true, was that really about it? What if she, following Night Light's hint, caused more damage than help? She could destroy her chances of winning the election for mayor! Er... Miss Sapphire - spoke the unicorn at the door, Sapphire had barely noticed her before - Did you know exactly what happened yesterday? Some guards told me, why? Because yesterday I was there fighting by Night Light side, with captain Gravel... - The Mare guard sadly spoke - I tried to send the signal to the back-up team and... no one came. Later we discovered that something knocked all of them... And? - Sapphire asked, raising her eyebrow. What she is trying to say is that Callaghan was not alone - Night Light interjected - And to do something this big, they must have some strong allies in their side. And what would you suggest to me to do? Evacuate the entire city? - Sapphire answered in a condescending tone. Yes - Night Light spoke firmly - we also have the need to send letters to the other cities to warn them, some letters to request back up and even to the princess herself to inform the situation. The cities of Fillydelphia and Manehatan didn't find the culprit of the attacks, so they must be professionals. It can get worse... much worse. The audacity of this unicorn was getting on the nerves of Sapphire, a pony from out of town that had come to HER town and even defied her authority. She was going to let him know a piece of her mind when he spoke again with a low voice. It seems we will get nowhere with this conversation; I didn't want to do this, but you forced my hand - Night Light rose up from the chair while searching for something inside his armor, trowing his badge in the table - By the authority of princess Celestia and the CTSA, I, Night Light, am assuming your position temporary on the chain of command and declaring state of emergency. Do you have any objection, Miss sapphire?" What? - Sapphire was incredulous - You CAN'T DO THAT! Yes, I CAN, and I am DOING IT. - Light's voice was deliberated as his eyes focused on the head of the guard forces - we don't have time to waste with some stupid conversations; we must act. "You didn't see it, but I saw how all the other captains had some strange problems in the last days, and I also read all of their reports. The indication of some kind of sabotage is obvious. All the signs align... That's why I will prepare this city for the worse." Night light started searching into Gravel's drawer, finally finding some blank scrolls and ink; and without losing a beat, he started writing a letter. You can't just ignore me! - Sapphire's face was red with anger, and she looked like a prey stuck in a corner - DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I AM THE HEAD OF SECURITY OF THIS CITY! I WILL ARREST YOU AND YOU WILL NEVER GET A JOB AGAIN AND...- Night Light rose a hand to her, silencing her rant and, after writing a sentence in the scroll, rose his head to meet Sapphire's eyes. The difference was that Night Light face lacked any emotion. Miss Alloy, please put this mare in the jail for a while, she's getting too tense, and I believe she needs to cool off a little; besides, I really need peace to do this work - Night Light then returned his attention to the letter he was writing Sapphire almost screamed, but when the tip of Alloy's spear touched her back, she stopped. Because she was in such a shock, she couldn't see the smile in the guard mare's face. As Alloy was returning to her post after locking the mad mare into the jail, her mind wandered. She was worried by many things at the moment, primary by the state of her friend Gravel Wings and, of course, with Far Reach. Ever since yesterday, she couldn't meet him because of the troubles with all the operation to catch Callaghan, and now it seemed that it would take even longer for her to go to the library since Night Light declared a state of emergency. For a moment, she questioned his decision. She didn't even know if a member of the CTSA could do it, but it didn't matter. She saw all the evidence that something was deeply wrong, and was certain that Night Light was the one to make things right... many ponies could get injured because of inaction, and that mare, who was a civilian appointed by the mayor, would not stand in the way of doing what is right. As Alloy was arriving at the office door, an unusual figure brought her back to reality. A slender bat-pony stallion wearing the dark-blue armor of the private army of the count of Hollow Shades awaited by the door. As she stopped to look at him, he saw her and smiled. Good day, miss, the stallion spoke in a hard accent, he was clearly bothered by the sun's light - Is the head of the barracks here? Oh, yes, he's inside - Alloy was confused - did you knock? Yes, miss, but no one answered. A moment, please, I will see what I can do. Night Light was bent over the table, a big frown in his forehead to indicate the level of his concentration while writing the letters that, in his mind, were essential. Excuse, Night Light. Night Light raised his head and seeing Violet Alloy, alone, let a wiak smiled and let himself fall into the chair. Alloy... I think I messed up... What do you mean? Taking over the duty of the head of the guard and locking her into a cell is almost an act of treason... - Night Light shook his head, sighing - It is a gamble I am willing to do, but even so... I am kind of afraid. Night Light, I am with you in this, so don't worry. Everything will be alright – Violet Alloy gave Night Light a comforting smile, but it didn't seem to work – by the way, there's a bat pony at the door. He wants to talk to you. Send him in. The Bat pony entered the office with confidence that only those who have fought the whole life could archive. His slitter eyes locked on Night Light, who didn't even budge. Alloy spoke that you wanted to meet me - Night Light started as soon as the bat pony entered the office, it seemed that he was anxious to return to his other duties - So, how can I help you? I came here to report an incident that happened not too long after the attack on the dock - the bat pony declared - I wished to come earlier, but I had a problem in doing that. And what problem was this? - Alloy asked from behind the pony, returning to her station by the door, the bat pony only glanced at her before answering. I overslept. My kind is not good with the daylight - Night light sighed, and the bat pony returned his attention to him - As I was saying, there was an attack on a library by an unknown assailant. The pony inside, a Pegasus, got injured during the process. WHAT! - Alloy yelled, her heart pounding faster, and her eyes widened in fear. A library with a Pegasus inside. It was no error, it was Far Reach - HOW IS HE? WHERE IS HE? Night Light wanted to make her stop, but he knew that if the same thing happened with Twilight Velvet, he would act in the same way. With this, he signed to the bat-pony to answer. He got some injuries in the wings and muzzle, and because of some information we got, our count decided to send us to take him to Hollow Shades, for his own protection. Information? - Night Light asked, he felt as if the bat pony knew more than he was letting on. Let's just say to your people to prepare for war. Something big is coming. War... - Night Light muttered to himself Anyway, with an injured Pegasus, my battalion must reach Hollow Shades in two days, despite what our captain wants - The Bat pony then turned to the door and started walking - Our count will send a letter to you with details of everything that he has in some days. Violet Alloy’s mind was confused, sad and afraid. If a war is coming, Far Reach could be in danger if he stayed in Baltmare and the safest place for him would be in Hollow Shades, the place full of guards and under the protection of the count. Even so, her heart was heavy, and a cloud of sadness was almost taking over her mind. Even she, who had training, would be in danger, and no pony could tell when they would meet again, or even if they would do so. You said war and... - Violet Alloy was tripping over her words, but, shaking her head, she made her mind up- can you take a letter of mine to Far Reach? The Pegasus? Alloy nodded. Yes, I can. After Alloy wrote her letter and the bat pony left, only Violet Alloy and Night Light remained at the office. He sighed, took all the letter he wrote and threw it at the ground. It seems that the situation is more dire than we thought – Light looked at alloy, apprehension on his face – What I wouldn't do for some kind of direct line to the princess... Author's Note Hello, everypony! I have an announcement and two questions for you all. First, the announcement. I will be changing the name of the story in the next few days because... well, while Far Reach is an important character in the tale, but we have many other "protagonist" that will have the spotlight like: Night Light, Violet Alloy, some members of the Dark Claw, the princess and a certain Doctor. Second, the question (s) 1- in my research, it looks like MLP G4 was released in October 2010, is it true? 2 - What do you think about the story in general, what do you think I could get better? This is something I always ask my friends when we play D&D, and I think feedback here would be awesome! And yes, there will be a chapter tomorrow. :pinkiehappy: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/pinkiehappy.png //-------------------------------------------------------// 10. The Count of Hollow Shades //-------------------------------------------------------// 10. The Count of Hollow Shades The Count of Hollow Shades Captain Viola trotted throughout the halls of the small castle in Hollow Shades while slightly shifting her wings. She was going to meet the count again to present her reports about the outsider she and her battalion brought three days ago and how he was recovering. Even so, for her, the task to face his daunting presence was immense, even if he was always just and calm – but she knew the power behind those calm eyes and the storm he could bring if so wanted. Besides that, he was, after all, the only pony besides the true queen of Equestria who could lead the Thestrals to the right path. Viola finally arrived at the door of the count's office atop one of the towers of the castle, and as the fleeting lights of the torches that littered the walls of the cold castle on that night danced, she raised her hand to knock, only to hear the count's voice from inside. You may enter. Viola shivered, he always did this, and she was always unsettled by it. It was natural for the thestrals to have a good hearing because of the habitat they lived in, but the count's hearing was on a league of his own. After taking a deep breath, Viola entered the Count’s office and met his eyes as he was sitting at his table of dark wood, reading the scrolls she found inside the library. Viola, a fantastic night we have today - The count voice was strong, imposing - So, how is our guest? Sir, he is in the guest room reading the book you forced let by his nightstand. Unfortunately, his mental health hasn't improved much. Of course, this would happen, that hen wished to break his body and soul – the count started tapping at the desk with his fingers, and for a second Viola believed that he smiled - Anyway, you don't need to bother with this now. Now, Viola, tell me the healing of his healing? His wings are healing slowly, as you predicted - The count nodded to Viola as she continued the report - The force of the attack was enough to piece his wings in and out, he's lucky it didn't hit any bone; besides this, he also received some cuts that was inches from his wing's tendons. Even with our best doctor's, he won't be able to fly for some time. -heh... - The count smiled, anyone besides those who knew him wouldn't believe it to be possible - It seems that our guest is luckier than expected. Count, May I ask a question? Yes, Viola, you can. Why do you instruct us to wait for the last minute possible to intervene in case something happened to him? - Viola was genuinely confused, any pony would hate to see another suffer like that, and she wasn't an exception – we had him under surveillance for a time, and we could easily intercept the attacker! The count laughed, something that Viola knew he would only do when he was with the ones he felt he could trust, and after the count recompose himself, he replied. You must think it was cruel to let this poor pony be beaten and have his wings almost ripped off, right, Viola? - the count asked without expecting confirmation – but this was essential to us in the long run. "You need to understand, Viola, that after the Queen of the Night revolution failed, we became pariahs in this land. We were few, but our loyalty was always with the fallen princess, even if we can't deny the importance of Celestia's sun. That's the reason why I, after reaching my position, chose to change the rules. We operate in the shadows, we fight those in the dark, and the only light we may accept is the one of the moon. In this game we play, information is the key, and that's why I told you not to act earlier." But, my lord, I can't understand! The count raised a finger, trying to make it easy for his subordinate to understand. Basically, those individuals tend to say far more than they need when they are having 'fun' - The count's gaze was profound and his eyes were cold - For example, because of you following my orders, we could confirm the connection between this attack and the one by the docks with Callaghan, way faster if you had her arrested and then interrogated. "And this confirms my suspicion that everything has been orchestrated not by the griffon kingdom, but by the dark claw. Now, the only question I have is the 'why'; even more, it seems that they are using forbidden knowledge to archive this goal." Forbidden knowledge? - Viola Widened her eyes Yes, the reports of the Battle against Callaghan mention him using magic—when Viola heard that, she was astonished—I have my suspicions of how they managed to get magic, and that's why we are acting, but for now we still have some time to prepare. Count, do you believe that SHE is involved? maybe... - The count looked at the silver layered mace hanging in the north wall - that's why I told all our troops to be ready to act at any time. For now, Viola, could you get our guest here? I wanted to finally meet him. There were some things Viola wanted to talk with the acting leader of the thestrals, but she knew that, at the moment he gave the order to fetch the guest, the talk was over. So, resigning to speak to him another time, she replied. As you wish. Far Reach was organizing the books in the library while whistling a lullaby that he heard when he was in the human world, that's when he heard the sound of the front door opening; he quickly stopped what he was doing to attend the potential client, but his jaw fell when he saw who it was. At the door stood Violet Alloy wearing a beautiful white dress, her long mane made and utilized to accented her own beauty. Reach couldn't control himself, he was so happy to see her after all those crazy events, but when he stepped in her direction and blinked, everything changed. The library was dark and lugubrious, the only light was over Alloy, and she was crying. Her beautiful white dress was stained in red, while her neck hanged low. She looked at Reach, fear and despair in her eyes as blood flowed from her eyes and mouth. Why didn't you save me? No... - Reach couldn't react, couldn't speak. I loved you and you let her kill me... No! No! No! No! - Far Reach closed his eyes, his screams growing louder and louder in a useless attempt to silence her words - NO! Reach woke screaming Alloy's name, his face sweating from fear and pure angsty, a normal occurrence for him. There was nothing he could do anymore, she was gone. In fact, everything he believed that would be his new life was taken away. To make thing worse, those bat ponies had abducted him without explanation, and no matter what he asked, they would always have the same reply. "The count will explain everything to you in due time." Beyond the problems inside his own head, Far Reach was, except for his wings, in good condition. They had been taking good care of him while he was recovering. Food, medical care and a good bed. The only things Far Reach would need to do was stay in his room, that was large and comfortable, and read a book about plants and nature. The last thing made Reach curious for the reasons behind it, but he would not question it, he already had a lot in his head. A knock on the door alerted Reach, who put his blankets over his lower parts. Come in. The door opened, revealing a sturdy looking mare, her dark blue coat and dark purplish mane make a good combination with her dark blue eyes. Reach had heard some passing guards speak of her as a captain and, by the toned form of her figure, he would not doubt it. Good. You're awake – she stated to him, her emotions indecipherable – this makes things easy. Please, put some clothes on and come with me, the count wants to meet you. A small smile came into Reach's muzzle, after three days of him staying in this big castle, he was finally allowed to meet his host. He was ready to get out of the bed and put some of the clothes that the bat ponies had offered to him, but then he looked at the mare who entered his room. er... I'm going to put my clothes on now. Please do - replied her. Are you staying? why not? - spoke the mare nonchalantly I am naked under the blankets... It took a moment for the mare to understand what Far Reach meant by "Are you staying?", but when she did, but even the dark fur of her face could hide the red hue; she was clearly ashamed, but, maybe because of the pride by her occupation, didn't let it change her stance or even the tone of her voice. I understand, I will be waiting outside - she spoke, exiting the room - please be brief. The bat pony mare walked fast through the halls of dark stone of the castle, she was almost trotting ahead of Far Reach, who, being out of shape, struggled to keep with her. Then an idea came to his mind, maybe if she spoke while walking, she would slow down. so, miss... Viola – spoke the mare without slowing down her pace – captain of the tenth battalion of the night hunter. Reach expected a name, not a description of her patent and job. Maybe she wished to cut out the talk, but he would not give up. So...miss Viola. How is the Count? - while trotting after the mare, Reach continued - to organize so many bat ponies in a place and make it function so well, he must be a great leader and... Viola suddenly stopped, and Far Reach almost collided with her. She slowly turned and looked at him. What did you say? - she asked. that he must be a great leader and... Far Reach couldn't finish his phrase as Viola hit him with her wing and, when he was distracted, she put him against the dark wall, her arm pinned his throat and almost choking him. Viola approached her face to him, locking eyes. Look, feather-head, you don't know this, but I will make it super clear to you - Viola spoke, anger contained in her voice - First, we don't like your kind here. You should be in Cloudsdale or some other bright place, not here in OUR home. "Second, we are NOT bat-ponies. We are Thestrals, and we are PROUD of this, understood. And finally, if you dare to ask any stupid question to our count I will GLADLY tear your head off, because he is our leader and has been for a long, long time. If you have any mother-bucking questions, wait till you got there and ask him yourself." Viola then let Far Reach out of her grasp and started walking to the count's office. It took Reach a moment to realize it, but it made sense. The bat-po...Thestrals allied themselves to Nightmare Moon during the civil war and, because of her defeat, they must have suffered from all sides during the fallout of the event. Well, now he had another pain to worry about; this and the fact that the count might kill him. But without Alloy's smile, he didn't care that much. That's when he realized that Viola was getting far away, so he ran to reach her. This time, without trying to talk to her. After some minutes of walking in utter silence and walking up a big flight of stairs, Viola finally reached the door of the count's office. Far Reach was not much behind, finally catching up with her while breathing laboriously and, to Reach's frown, Viola smiled when she saw him like that. Viola then raised her hand to knock, only for a strong voice to come from inside the office. Come in From Far Reach's point of view, Viola seemed angry, but she tried not to show it, and then she took a deep breath to, finally, open the door for both. When he entered the office, Far Reach was take aback. The place was completely different from what he had imagined. The walls were painted in bright colors, but the paint almost couldn't be seemed as all the walls were littered with bookshelves, except one where, displayed in ornamented pieces of metal, various weapons stood and, in the lower part, a fireplace burned bright. And, above one of the bookshelves, a beautiful painted portrait stood. In the floor, a glorious red rug stood and above it the desk where the count of the Thestrals stood up. Just after delivering the guest, Viola hurried to station herself by the door, only to be cut off by the count. Viola, today this won't be necessary - the count calmly spoke. While he was speaking, Far Reach was take back by his appearance. He was build the same way as a strong Earth Pony, but was a little slenderer than them; his black mane was short with some gray threads and was completely combed back with, in combination with the well-kept goatee and his choice of clothes, a black tuxedo with a red tie, gave him the vibes of a James Bond villain. But what if he tried anything? We know nothing about him! - Viola tried to argue. I know enough - was the count simple answer - Now, Viola, please go to the base of the tower and don't let anyone approach. Understood? Viola seemed bothered but accepted it, and slowly exited the room while Far reach looked at her. He was certain she saw him trying to hide a smile. After she left, the count presented Reach the chair in front of his desk while sitting in his own chair. After both were comfortable, he took a piece of paper off the desk and started reading. Farley Richard, also known as Far Reach. Arrested in the city of Baltimare for disorderly conduct. Evidence were collected from locals of him walking aimless in the streets, eating garbage and having a disheveled appearance of a mad Pegasus. - The count stopped for a moment, looking at Reach, who only nodded - After apprehension, the pony showed indications of amnesia and confusion, claiming being a "human from another world"; he was kept under custody until the captain Gravel Wings gave him permission to leave. At this point, a mare was elected to help him be reintroduced to society. The mention of Alloy, even if indirectly, made him sad. That's when the impotent count spoke again. Is it true? - the count rose an eyebrow What? -You being a human from another world. At this point, Reach didn't care. So he did the only thing he could muster energy to do and nodded. After this, the count took out a bunch of scrolls from the table. Well, this explains a lot. I read all of your scrolls, but your way of writing isn't good yet... - The count opened some of the scrolls, pointing at linguistic errors - see, there is an error here and here. But if you want to go on with this project, I can help you find a good editor. Oh, thank you. I was thinking of letting this project go after what happened with Alloy, but... Reach stopped, his eyes widened as a realization hit his mind. How could this thestral be able to read English? How could he be capable of pointing grammatical errors? WAIT! - Far Reach even forgot who he was talking to - HOW CAN YOU READ IT? The count's only answer was loud and whole-hearted laughter. //-------------------------------------------------------// 11. An Unexpected Friend //-------------------------------------------------------// 11. An Unexpected Friend An Unexpected Friend The flames in the fireplace danced while the small pieces of wood crackled. Besides this, besides this, the only other sound was the Count’s loud laughter. Far Reach couldn't react. "It couldn't be possible" "No Way!" These were the only kinds of thoughts on his mind. The Count, perceiving his confusion, laughed even more. After a moment, the Count perceived that Far Reach was taking longer to compose himself than expected, so he decided to help him calm himself. Yes, Farley, you are not the only here human in Equestria and - The Count of Hollow Shades rose from his chair, walking to the nearest bookshelf where he took off some books to reveal a secret compartment; from where he retrieved a bottle of wine and two glasses - I doubt you will be the last. All the time Far Reach was looking to the Count, eyes widened in surprise while the count, who was putting the two glasses in the table and serving them both, was calmly doing his thing. So, Reach, can I call you Reach, right? - Far reach blinked, and the Count continued - So, how is the year three thousand on earth? What? - Reach blinked once again, now in pure confusion. The year three thousand! - The count, already sitting in his chair and sipping his wine, answered - I believe that I was sent here around the year two thousand and six, and I have been here for a long time so... Wait! - Reach finally noticed the glass of wine and tried it - I was sent here in January of two thousand eleven... Far Reach was going to say another thing, but the savor of the wine was too strong for him, and he almost spit all the content into the Count's face. But the Count was fast, too fast for Reach to believe and, when the wine approached him, he easily got out of the way. what out, this tuxedo is worth a small fortune! - Reach was absolutely ashamed of his action, but the count only smiled at him - do not worry, it is nothing. Really. Far Reach only watched while the count took his half-full glass and walked next to the fireplace, only to sit next to it. He then turned his attention to Reach, still smiling. Come here and sit with me - The count turned again to the flames - and don't forget to bring the wine and your glass. This wine is an acquired taste, and you will not get out here without it! All the tension Reach was building till that moment disappeared, the Count seemed like a good guy – far different from the dread person, or pony on this case, he had imagined. He sighed and followed the count order. When he sat, the count spoke once again, without looking at him. When I read the rumor that another human had appeared, it took my interest instantly, but - The count looked at the portrait above one of the bookshelves and Far Reach followed his gaze. The portrait was of the count, a young thestral and by his side was a greenish unicorn, both with big smiles on their faces – a human turned pony who loved to read and write that ended up in a library and that was pursued by some shadowy forces. You were too much like him for me to ignore. Him? yes. My best friend – The Count spoke solemnly. There was something bothering Reach all this time that he had spoken with the count, he was going to do it when he realized that his glass was full of wine again. Do not fret, if you have something you want to ask, go for it - The count spoke smiling - you just have to drink a glass of wine for each question. With the word from the count, Reach felt more comfortable and, carefully, drank the content of the glass. It was strong, but, this time, it felt better, and he didn't spit it. So, count, what's your name? This seemed to take the Count off-guard, but he laughed it off. He took a deep breath and answered. I realize you noticed the tendency of the natives of simplified our names, right? yes? And you understand that I'm a Thestral, also known as a bat pony, right? Yes... And that, as a noble, I am the count of Hollow Shades, right? The gears on the Far Reach's mind started turning, he couldn't believe, he wouldn't believe what he was thinking. Oh no... -yes. You didn't! How couldn't I? I CANT BELIEVE IT! Far Reach, nice to meet you - the count grinned at him - My name is Vlad Tempest the third, count of Hollow Shades and head of the last of the night guards. Reach blinked with the unbelievable name his new friend (?) chose for himself. All while Vlad was laughing to his heart content. When he stopped, he looked at Reach with a devious smile on his face. If you react like this to my name, I would love to see your reaction to my friend's name. What was his name? - Reach couldn't believe that and a name more silly than calling a bat pony a variation of Dracula’s true name would be possible, but he chose to follow along. The alcohol was starting to do its effect. So, as I said, he was a unicorn that loved to read and wished to be an author someday - Vlad raised a finger - and he was an exceptional lancer while in the solar brigade, even if he preferred to use a spear, so he became... Please... don't say the name that I think it is... Vlad looked at Reach with a smug look before speaking. - Shake Spear!- Vlad shouted Far Reach facepalmed and Vlad, once again, loudly laughed. Vlad and Reach spoke for a long time, each minute Reach was getting more loose because of the alcohol and was clearly getting inebriated, and this made him talk openly about everything with his companion. And while the time passed, they talked about Earth, about how everything changed ever since Vlad was sent to Equestria, about how things were different in the world of equines and, about love. In special, the kind of love between a human in the body of a pony and a native. At first, Vlad wanted only to gather useful information from this human, but with the passage of time he felt as if he was talking to Spear again. "How could they both be so different and similar at the same time?" Though, Vlad many times during the conversation; but after some time, he bent to the feeling and let his heart get warm once again after so many years. Even so, he was careful not to tell anything unnecessary to his new friend, only the superfluous stuff. Vlad even thought that maybe it was the wine, a strong variation only found on his personal winery, but he knew that after so long he gained resistance to it. The truth was that he was taking a liking to this young pony. After this conclusion, he just enjoyed his time until Far Reach slept next to him by the fireplace, he was uttered defeated by the powerful wine. For a moment, Vlad glanced at Reach with a smile while remembering the time he felt this way with his friend, but his complexion grew cold when his eyes met the scar on Reach's wings. He rose from his spot and silently left the room. No one could hear his hoof steps while he descended the tower. It didn't take long for Vlad to reach the base of the tower, where he saw Viola in her position. She was one of the best on his forces and someone he could trust with almost anything, so it was her the pony he needed to give the order. Viola - Vlad spoke gently Viola reacted as he expected, branding her weapon in his direction and almost hitting him. It is always an almost hit. My lord, I am deeply sorry - Viola bowed to him, but he made many a sign for her to rise - I... I couldn't hear you coming. Do not worry, Viola, you did better than the others - he comforted her, but he knew that she felt a chill, of course, he couldn't contain his anger for long - Reach is sleeping on my tower, take him to his chambers when he wakes and take a very good care of him, as he is my lost grand-nephew. What! How! - In her confusion, Viola even forgot her manners - He is a PEGASUS! Yes, he is my lost grand-nephew and I even used magic to confirm it - Vlad grinned, he was never really found of the princess, but her skills of putting on a mask and lie to her subjected were something he was right to learn, of course, if Viola was an earth pony, it could be more difficult - so please, threat him as if he was me. Understood? For some reason, Viola got paler, but Vlad would not be the one to seek a reason. He had something else in mind, a matter that, for him, couldn't wait. Now, tell me, Viola. How was the severity of the injuries Reach had when he got here? Hum... - Viola took a time to remember and then answered - He had piercing and cuts injuries in each wing, almost reaching his tendons and bones. So, he could have lost his wings, right? Yes, sir. Understood, that's all I needed to know - the count put a hand over his eyes, hiding them from Viola - Captain, I am going to my nightly walk. Oh, may I accom... - Viola accidentally took a glimpse at the Count's blood-red eyes and stooped. No. I will go alone this time and – he started walking throughout a corridor in the direction of the courtyard – warn every pony. No matter what you hear or see. No one shall intervene. //-------------------------------------------------------// 12. The Last True Champion of the Night //-------------------------------------------------------// 12. The Last True Champion of the Night The Last True Champion of the Night The fifth sister was hiding in the clouds above the dark castle of Hollow Shades. It had been hard for her to escape the gazes and expanded hearing of the guards that continually patrolled the place, especially during the nighttime. The hardest challenge was maintaining herself fed, as the nearest village from hollow shades was almost half an hour away from the castle, even flying, so she didn't have a way to swipe away some dumb and small pony as her lunch. Her luck was that around the castle there existed a big and dark forest full of small critters that she could use to feed – Of course, she would trade all the animals of the forest for the taste of Pony flesh. Even so, she managed to survive in hiding, just awaiting any chance she could get to capture Far Reach, her prey that managed to escape. She was determined to "teach" her "little brother" how to properly behave and not to runway. "Maybe he won't need his wings or legs?" She caught herself thinking several times while drooling. That's when her luck seemed to change, as all the guards patrolling the courtyard had disappeared, and a lone bat pony left the building. She looked at him for a moment, many terrible acts passed through her mind to do with him, but her favorite was the meal he could become. The pony in question was tall for a bat-pony, with a short black mane with some gray threads, everything combed back in a way that, combine with his posh attire, made the fifth sister smile devilishly. A posh pony, alone, strolling during the night in the big unguarded courtyard of the castle. "This weaponless pony must be one of those business ponies I saw on Baltimare when I was making the reconnaissance. An easy prey." She thought. But the posh pony stopped as the fifth was reading herself for her attack and looked at her general direction, which took her by surprise. I know you are there, reveal yourself. - The pony spoke firmly, the way he spoke made the fifth sister remember of the first sister. - If you don't come, I will make you regret it. The hen was confused, "how did he know I was here?" She thought, but it was useless. If her location was found, there was no reason to hide again. So she leapt from the cloud and glided to a spot a few steps from the newcomer, in her hands, her short sword ready. Good, this makes everything easy for me - The pony didn't seem afraid of her imposing features, or even her armored state, and this made her very angry - I will ask you some questions, and you will answer. Simple, right? The rage inside the fifth sister was growing with each word of the bat pony, and before she thought, she yelled at him. Little pony, do you know who I AM? - The fifth sister yelled - maybe this big sister should teach you what men to feel fear! Oh, I know you very well - calmly answered the bat pony - Kirsten the hungry, currently working under the dark claw. I can't believe the "mother" accepted a trash like you as a high ranking officer in her organization, but seeing that even Callaghan managed to enter, it does not surprise me. WHAT, HOW DO YOU NOW? The voice of the pony was severe and regal, his eyes shining a bright red under the moon's light while he spoke. Kristen, you entered my domains after my guest. Do you think I wouldn't know who the invader or its associates are - The Count Vlad started walking to the now frightened hen - And do you really believe that someone as dangerous as you would be free to roam my lands and endanger my subjects? How did you know I was here? I knew it from the start, but chose to let it slide as long as you behaved yourself - he was getting close, his mouth twisting a dark smile and his red eyes making the hen shake - furthermore, I wanted to deal with you... myself. Seeing Vlad stepping under her reach, Kristen leaped into action, her short sword aiming for the Count's neck, only for him to dodge her attack to the side and, while dodging her, continue to talk. What is the goal of Dark Claw? - Vlad dodged a new attack from Kristen, who was taking a dagger with her other hand - Why did you go after the Pegasus? Kristen wasn't going to answer any question the Count asked, no. She was determined to kill him right now, and she would do it, no matter what. Without taking her eyes from her enemy, Kristen flatted her wings and managed to put some distance between the two. She then smirked, and she summoned the magical energy she gained from the second sister experiments. And as the energy enveloped her, in both of her sides, perfect clones appeared. This change of events made the leader of Hollow Shades change his demeanor to an even darker one. Kristen then pointed a talon at Vlad and the two clones advanced, attacking recklessly. The Count on his part tried to dodge the attacks of the clones, moving from side to side, retreating a few steps and evading each and every attack thrown at him. But even so, one of the short swords hit him. And nothing happened. Then Vlad looked closer at the clones and realized they were nothing more than minor illusions to distract him. Now, ignoring the harmless clones and burning with anger, Vlad looked at Kristen, who was now pointing the tip of her dagger to him with a smug look on her face. BURN, COUNT OF HOLLOW SHADES! BURN! From the tip of the dagger, a cone of flames erupted, engulfing the Count inside it. And while the flames raged, Kirsten heard the voice of the Count come loudly from amidst the fire. I tried being reasonable with you, I tried talking and only arresting you, but now... - From the point where the Count was supposed to be in the flames, an energy surge reverberated, countering and canceling the spell of fire. When the flames subsided, there was an imposing figure wearing a full suit of dark blue heavy plate armor with the symbol of a new moon engraved in its chest, while smoke was still being exhaled from it. Inside the helmet, Kristen could still see the red of the count eyes – But you just crossed a line you never should have. Kristen felt the pressure of his power that the count held, and disregarding her orders, chose to flee, flapping her wings as hard as she could. But as she was getting out of the ground, the Count pointed to her and spoke with strength. By the light of the moon, I compel you - he spoke firmly - FIGHT ME! Kirsten stopped and touched the ground once again, her mind clouded by something she couldn't put her finger on. The only thing she knew is that she NEEDED to fight the count. So, she turned to him with her dagger and short sword and advanced. The helmet the count was wearing disappeared as if it was made of smoke or clouds, and he smiled at the enrage hen, and when she trusted her short sword, Vlad was quick to grab the arms by the base of her talons pulling her to his side and, when she was with her arm stretched, he bit into it. The hen's eyes widened as the pain spread into her body and her blood spilled into the ground. With all her strength and desperation, she managed to get out of the Count's terrible hold over her arm. She managed to get some steps far from the count before looking at him and seeing his fang and his muzzle covered with her blood. That sight, mix with his dark-blue armor and the natural darkness of the moon, made her shiver in fear. Vlad's helmet reappeared in his head. How do you feel being in the menu for once, Kirsten, the foal eater? - The fear of Kirsten rose, this pony knew about her past—but we already dragged this far more than I wished. I'm going to finish it now. The armored Vlad started running towards the injured hen, his right arm and hand stretched, and there, in the palm of his hand, a beautiful and frightening Great Axe appeared from thin air. Kirsten opened her wings to try to escape again, but she barely had time to react when Vlad hid her with his shoulder, sending her back with unnatural strength. She tried to use her wings to readjust herself midair, but the Count struck again, this time with his great axe in an ascending arc, completely severing Kirsten's left wing clean. Kirsten screamed in pain with tears falling from her eyes, looking at the more than half of her wing lying on the ground. This was for one of Far Reach's wings, now let's see about the other one - The count spoke under his dark helmet. Kirsten tried to retract her right wing, but she didn't have the strength to do so. The pain she was feeling was so great that she even let her weapon fall to the ground. It only made the target easy for the Count that, with another strike of his axe, severed her right wing, and then followed with a strike with the head of the axe on the chest of the hen; making her unconscious instantly. Vlad then looked to the dark sky and smiled, and at that time three figures dressed in dark robes and wearing necklaces with the symbol of a new moon descended, kneeling at him. Take this hen to the dungeons and treat her wounds - he spoke casually - she will tell us her secrets and the ones from the dark claw. She wanting it or not. //-------------------------------------------------------// [LORE] The Map OF Equestria //-------------------------------------------------------// [LORE] The Map OF Equestria As I promised, here is the map I'm using for the story, and my entire AU - and is the same I will use in the other timelines present in this reality.
