Chapter 2: Knowing The Locals

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The Next Day…

Fury finally opened his eyes and gave a deep yawn.

“Ohhhh… that was a good nap!” Fury said. “This bed definitely hit the spot.”

Then Fury realized something. “Wait, didn't I pass out? Aw man, not again. I guess I let myself eat and talk too much. Real classy, fish breath. Real classy.” He moaned to himself. Looking over at the clock, he saw that it was 5:30 the next morning. The sun was barely coming over the horizon and some lanterns were still lit on the balcony in his room.

Fury was always an early riser, developing a sort of fondness for the early morning air as he got up to usually pick up the odd job around his home to pay the bills. But now, he wasn't really sure what to do.

“Well, I doubt I have to find another job now. I'm getting fed, housed and cared for by royalty, so the usual schedule is out the window. I guess I can just get my usual exercise around the castle until breakfast is ready. Yeah, that'll get me going.”

Fury took a deep breath, charged up his energy and- Wait. Would racing around the castle really be a good idea at this hour?

“Well, I don't want to wake up anyone who's still sleeping, that's for sure. Cadence definitely seems like the ‘Beauty Sleep’ type. Looks like I'm going for a regular jog.” He said to himself as he straightened up and went at a more reasonable pace. As he went about his business, he took in how the warm sun seemed to radiate through the stained glass of some windows, almost as if each color gave a new sensation for him to feel as he walked by. The early morning sun gave an orange glow to the inside of the castle where the non-stained glass stood, a completely new atmosphere for him.

Turning his vision a little lower, he saw the maids already at work maintaining the castle. Scrub buckets and window washers everywhere as they kept the areas he walked through clean to impress their rulers. There were also some wielding some weird contraption with feathers, but he didn't mind it. Everything in the morning seemed much more quiet, the usual noise of birds and early morning crickets replaced with the hollow feeling of indoor hustle and bustle.

Fury decided to go take his morning jog outside, and perhaps check out the gardens around the palace. Being careful to not trip over any staff cleaning up the palace, he eventually made it to the double doors that lead out to the Royal gardens. Taking a step into the fresh morning air, he took a hearty sniff of the aroma the flowers were giving off. The scent of daffodils, lilies, roses and other flora were very different from where he grew up. Most of the scents he would pick up back home were pine and maple trees with the occasional smell of the sludge pits near the swamp.

Walking along the stone path, his paws were greeted with a very pleasant feeling. The stone seemed to be warm to the touch, even though the sun was barely in the sky. Perhaps this was that special magic he heard some ponies possessed, heating the stone for a more comfortable experience.

Just then, a more prominent smell caught his nose. The scent of daisies and warm sunshine trailed from somewhere deep in the gardens. His other senses immediately began to work on it, translating the information and adding to his internal data pool. From the scent itself, he could tell this was a living thing moving around. His hearing picked up the faint chatter of two ponies talking while his paws felt the vibrations of their movements.

Being someone who preferred to access his surroundings before going in, he hid behind some of the hedge bushes as the scent got stronger. The smell came to a head a few seconds later and he made out two voices, one more familiar than the other.

“...Yes, yes, I understand. A Royal's work is nothing to be left unattended, but can't this wait until I've at least had breakfast, Raven?”

Well, that's obviously Celestia talking. But who's this ‘Raven’? Another pony? Someone else?

“I assure you, there will be time for food after you address the masses of your niece’s second wedding upcoming this week. We cannot delay.” The other voice said, a very posh accent along with it.

Sounds sophisticated… orderly… she's probably the type who goes by the book if she has the brass bearings to speak to the princess that way. And at almost half past five too. He thought shuddering at the idea of doing busy work that early. What kind of work schedule did Celestia have?

Before he could get any more information, the vibrations stopped and the speaking went quiet. The scent was still close by, but it seemed to be stationary for now. Fury was confused, was Celestia ticked off by this pony so much that she had to stop and breathe? He had seen his mother do much the same when she was irritated, maybe she did the same?

Then, Celestia spoke. “Night Fury, I know you're in those bushes. I can sense you from here.”

He almost squealed in fear at her voice, but calmed himself down as he made himself known. Looking towards Celestia, he saw the pony she was talking to. She had almost the same color fur as Celestia did, her mane a dark brown in a bun with semicircle glasses and a clipboard in hoof.

“How'd you know I was there? Usually, no creature knows we exist until we want them to.” Fury asked, curious as to how she knew his location.

“As an alicorn, I have learned many passive spells and abilities that keep me safe. I have a passive ability to sense the energy of any creature around me, and you are no different. Though, I could ask you the same thing.”

“Easy, I followed your scent.” Fury said simply.

“My scent?” Celestia parroted.

“Of course. Every creature gives off a scent, it's how we track our prey.” He said confidently. The pony next to Celestia didn't seem so impressed.

“Are you insinuating that the princess stinks!?” She asked aggressively.

“Woah woah, pump the brakes there! When did I say that!?” Fury questioned.

“Simple! When you implied that the Princess had a scent at all! What, do you think she’s some sort of smelly mutt? Hmmm?” The bespectacled mare shot back.

Celestia sighed at her advisor’s quick but misplaced response. “Raven, what did we say about jumping to conclusions?”

“But, Your Majesty-”

“No buts. He did not mean anything negative. Besides, this is the guest I have told you about. Raven, this is Night Fury. The Speed Shifter that we brought in to give us an inside eye into their culture.” She said, Raven's head turning to the unamused feline that stood in front of her.

Raven finally got it through her head, she made a mistake. “My apologies, I was just… a bit stressed. I have a lot of tasks going on today.”

“No biggie, you seemed like the high strung, orderly type. Though, you telling Celestia when she can eat… let me ask you this. Ahem… do you want to keep your lungs inside your chest?” Fury said. Celestia laughed at his assumption. Out of all the creatures she had met, even he had made the misconception that she was a tyrant.

“Oh Fury, I'm not as ruthless as you think. She can do that because she is my Royal Advisor. She keeps my schedules and manages many of the things going on in the castle along with assisting in my duties.” Celestia explained.

“Oh, so she's a right hoof mare? Huh, I've seen the chief of my tribe go through many in his years. Poor sap, never seemed to lower his standards.” Fury sighed. “Wait… you're the first pony I've met in this city that isn't royalty! Hey, look at that, I'm getting more familiar with other creatures!”

Raven nodded. “And likewise. I got so worked up that I forgot I was talking to our guest. Raven Inkwell, it's a pleasure.” She said, putting her hoof out to shake. Fury gladly took it.

“I wanted to see you, Fury, earlier. But I was working on preparations for you coming here, I ironically had no time to see you myself. Her Majesty Mi Amore Cadenza, told me to take a rest before seeing you.”

“Eh, it's not that big. To be honest, I'm surprised Cadence's wedding isn't the biggest thing going around. From what I know, things are gonna get busy around here.” Fury said. Then, he stood up straight, his ears flicking around.

“Is something the matter?” Raven asked.

“I hear something. It's far off, but my ears are super sensitive so it's practically next to me. I hear… whooshing? No, puffing! And a whistle.”

“That must be the train from Ponyville arriving at the station. Your hearing must be very good to hear that, the station is very far away from here.” Celestia said.

“Coming from where I grew up, missing the slightest sound cue can mean the difference between living beyond 16 and being 6 feet under.”

“My goodness, it sounds like your people live in a harsh land if you have that to worry about. You must be powerful.” Raven said.

“Yep. Even the weakest Shifter has to pull some of his weight if he wants to survive. Especially when we live in a village and not in big cities like our ancestors had. I guess we got the hard lot in the generational game.” Fury said with a chuckle. “But honestly, I kind of like it that way. It makes it more interesting.”

“Even so, you have still proven your worth to us.” Celestia said with a reassuring smile. “Now, I'll greet our invitees at the train station. Raven, if you would lead our guest to the dining hall for breakfast…”

“Of course, your majesty.” Raven said with a bow. Fury could see the satisfaction Raven had when Celestia agreed.

“So you caved in to her demands, huh? At least this time. I guess even monarchs can get bossed around.” Fury said.

Celestia shrugged. “Well, it is her job, after all. I have my work as royalty, that much is clear. Even so, sometimes I need a little help with my job and keeping my ducks in a row and not getting overloaded with work that surprises me. It is only expected that I sometimes need a stern reminder of what I need to get done and when, even if I could fire them for such snippy responses.”

“Huh, well I guess we all make sacrifices to keep ourselves going everyday.” Fury said as he went to catch up to Raven and grab something to eat.

Later that morning…

Luna, Cadence, Fury and Raven had already had their important meals of the day and were now going to meet the Mane Six and discuss the preparations for the upcoming wedding. Fury could only imagine what these ponies were like. Were they even more snooty or less? Could they take a joke or were they more serious? Only time would tell as they made their way to meet with them.

He had to admit that he was a little nervous about meeting them as his attempts to make friends before had never really worked at home. His past being a major talking point and being the main block that put most Speed Shifters off about him. He hanged back, hiding behind the two larger figures in front of him to mask his figure and keep him out of sight.

Cadence noticed his increasingly noticeable anxiety and decided to address the issue. “Feeling nervous about meeting them?”

“Like a kid doing a show and tell for the first time. It's a bit of current and past mushing together. I want to make new friends and give myself a better life, but my trust issues from back home aren't making things easy.” He said with his ears pinned to the sides of his head.

Cadence could understand where he would feel anxious in this situation. After going so long feeling like his entire existence was forfeit and shutting the world out in a fit of depression, he could very well be scared of even getting close to them.

“Don't worry, Twilight and her friends are nice. They won't bring you any harm. We'll all be here for you if you feel uncomfortable.” She said reassuringly, getting somewhat of a grin out of the still visibly nervous feline.

Soon enough, they arrived in the private room Celestia said to meet her in. From what Fury could see, there were six ponies there to meet him, but much of the details were blocked by the princesses he was sheepishly hiding behind.

“Ah right on time. Girls, I must warn you ahead of time that he is very shy when it comes to meeting new creatures, so please give him the benefit of the doubt.” Celestia asked.

“Don't worry princess, we'll be gentle with him.” Another voice said.

“Well then, there's nothing else to do but introduce him. Girls, I'd like you to meet Night Fury.” Cadence and Luna stepped aside to allow him to be seen, but he stepped along with them and hid in Luna's shadow, his nervous eyes being the only thing being visible. One pony stepped forward with a caring smile, a yellow pegasus with a pink mane swooped over her face.

“Hey, don't be scared. It's okay.” She said in a soft voice.

Fury just stood there nervously, his body fighting his mind in trying to get acquainted with these new faces. He could see this particular pony meant well, but his memories and lingering trust issues were a bit of a hassle at the moment.

“Heh, sorry about that. I'm still not used to seeing other ponies. The princesses have been the only ones I’ve seen. So uh… what’s your name?” Fury asked.

“Oh um, I'm… Fluttershy. I'm from um… Cloudsdale.”

Well at least I know I'm not the only socially awkward one. She seems more nervous than me!

“Well, it's nice to meet you. I hope we get to know each other.”

Fury decided for now to move onto the other ponies, now with less fear and more confidence. These seemed like ponies that could be talked to with no hassle. He stepped out of the princesses’ shadow and allowed himself to be seen in daylight, his very different form getting interesting reactions from all.

The white, orange and blue ones seemed shocked, the purple one seemed curious and the pink one had an eager smile, maybe a little too eager.

“Well… I guess the cat is out of the bag.” Fury said, trying to make a joke. “I'm Night Fury, the speed shifter guest, you've heard of. It's nice to meet you-”

“OH MY GOSH! THIS IS AMAZING! YOU LOOK LIKE A GIANT KITTEN!” The pink one said, inches away.

“Wait how did you get here-”

“I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG TO MEET YOU!!! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? DO YOU LIKE DANCING? JOKES? PIN THE TAIL ON THE DONKEY?! I WAS JUST WAITING SO LONG FOR-”

Then the pink pony was grabbed by what seemed to be purple magic. “Pinkie! Let our guest have some space!”

“I'm Twilight Sparkle. Sorry, that was Pinkie Pie, she's a bit… excitable.” The purple unicorn said. Fury noticed her mane was straight and finely kept, her fur getting much the same attention. The detective side of Fury's brain immediately put things together and made out that she must be the orderly one, the one keeping everything in line.

“Yeah, no kidding.” Fury muttered with an eye roll.

“She means well, you'll get used to her.” Twilight said.

“I hope so. So you're that infamous prized pupil? I bet you've been around the block a few times when it comes to history.”

“I guess you could say that. Still I wouldn't call myself that experienced in history. I only read fifteen of the great writers’ works and there's still so many more I must read to even call myself that.”

Fury was amused. “Yep. You're definitely Twilight Sparkle, egghead premier.” He then stepped up to the orange one before an unamused Twilight could respond back. The pony he saw next wore a traditional cowgirl hat and had a muscular build. But not from the usual exercise. It looked more like a work bod, toned and worn down from days on a ranch.

“Country girl, huh? You look like the type to preach work ethic and doing things yourself.” Fury theorized.

“You got me figured right out, partner. Not just me, but my brother and sister too. We Apples love a good day's work and make everypony happy with cider. If you come to Ponyville, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by it. Name's Applejack by the way.” The cowpony said, tipping her hat.

“Oh you bet I will, but we'll get to that when the time comes.” Fury said, turning his gaze to the pony closest to Applejack .

The next one was a light blue, another pegasus with a rainbow mane and a prominent athlete look. From what he could see, she was more like him. Built for speed.

“Let me guess, you're the athletic one in this group. Adrenaline junkie much?” He asked with a slick grin, now getting a little more comfortable.

“Adrenaline junkie is putting it lightly. I'm obsessed with it. Nothing beats flying with all your will. I'm the fastest pony in Ponyville, in fact, maybe in all of Equestria. Rainbow Dash is the name, speed and sports are my game!” The pegasus proudly proclaimed.

“Well, Rainbow Dash, just don't be too cocky. I'm pretty fast myself. We’re not called Speed Shifters for nothing.” Fury boasted.

“Oh, we'll see about that one.” She shot back. Fury moved on to the next pony of the group, the white unicorn. Her mane was a purple much like Twilight's fur, but her coat was a pristine white like Celestia's. She wore her hair in a sort of coil, eye shadow and extended lashes adding more to her features. Definitely a girl with a taste for the latest trends.

“Why hello, darling, my name is Rarity. Fashion designer. I can work up a nice suit or dress for anypony- I mean anyone who needs it. I'm pretty sure you could use one for the wedding.” Rarity said with a big grin.

“Perhaps, but I'll come to you when the time is right. To be honest, you look like you belong here instead of someplace else.” Fury said.

“Well, that comes down to how I was raised. I was an oddity in my more rural family before I decided to take up fashion. I wanted to live in Canterlot, but time has shown me that living the high life isn't as glorious as it seems. Ponyville may be a bit… dirtier than I'd like, but it is where I shall stay.” Rarity said.

“Well, sometimes the things you see as bad are the things you grow the most attached to. It's always about seeing what's beneath the surface that gets you the good spots in life.” Fury said, fighting his own inner voices about the irony of his life. Though his mouth didn't move, his thoughts were not exactly silent as Luna could pick up on the changes in his energy when making the comment. Though she minded herself as the time was not right to address the fact.

And finally, a familiar pink earth pony with a very fluffy mane came by seeming calm on the outside this time but he could tell she was about to explode.

“Pinkie would like to give a re-greeting.” Twilight said.

“Yep. Sorry about that. I'm Pinkie Pie! I like making baked goods and all sorts of sugary delights. And I also like to throw parties. I hope you'll enjoy them!” Pinkie said, taking deep breaths trying to contain her sheer excitement.

“A baker, nice! I could get used to that. Haven't had anything remotely sweet in a good while. Can't wait to see what you can do! In other words, put ‘er there!” Fury said, holding out his paw. Pinkie let out a gasp as she went to shake his paw. But as soon as she made contact…

Bzzzzzzt!

“Yowza!” Pinkie jumped at the slight jolt she got from his paw.

“A little trick I picked up from my BFF back home.” He said as he showed off his paw, revealing that he used his energy to make it into a built-in hoofshake buzzer.

“Not a bad trick, big guy. I thought you were just trying to contain yourself. Nice to see another prank enthusiast.” Pinkie said.

“Eh, maybe a little bit. But I scanned my surroundings for the best opportunity, and I saw one right in front of me. Been a while since I delved into the classic buzzer trick.” Fury admitted, now seeming fully relaxed and comfortable with the new arrivals.

“I think you and I are going to be great friends. But just remember…” Pinkie then stared into Fury's eyes. “You haven't had the last laugh, my friend. I have my own tricks.”

“Oh I don't doubt it.” Fury said smugly. “May the best one win.”

“Well, it seems you all have gotten acquainted rather well.” Celestia said smiling. “Now, onto the important things. Cadence, if you would…” The pink princess nodded and stepped forward.

“As you all may know, in a few days, my wedding will be taking place and it should go without saying that everything needs to be just right. So over the next few days, I'll have all of you helping out making sure this romantic redo of my marriage goes smoothly.”

“I would be honored to, Princess.” Rarity said. “I have so many ideas for your wedding dress, I can hardly wait!”

“I would be happy making the food for the reception. I'll make them so tasty, you'll wish you could have it all to yourself!” Applejack said.

“Leave the entertainment to me, your highness. I'll have this wedding be the talk of Canterlot for years!” Pinkie chirped.

“I can help with the airshow after the rings get exchanged. I may just be in the reserves, but I'm still a part of the Wonderbolts regardless!” Rainbow said confidently.

“I'll have my animals singing in perfect harmony in no time, your majesty. The music for your entrance will be perfect.” Fluttershy added.

“And I'll make sure everything stays in order. Things may have gone south the first time around, but I'll be sure it stays the way it should be. You have my word as your future sister-in-law!” Twilight said.

“Yeah, all of your jobs are cool and all, but what exactly am I supposed to do? I'm not exactly sure how I fit into this picture.” Fury asked curiously.

“Well, you'll be checking on the preparations with me, of course!” Cadence announced.

“Oh yeah, that seems logical- wait, what?” He said, doing a double take that got a giggle out of her.

“I know it may seem odd that I'm asking you to help me keep track of progress, but I believe that having an outside eye into how my wedding is going could provide some unique perspective. Besides, why not give you a tour of Canterlot itself in the meantime?” Cadence offered. Night Fury was a little skeptical about revealing himself to the outside world, but having Cadence by his side would make things a little more bearable.

“Well, okay. I guess if I'm here in Canterlot I might as well get familiar.” Fury said. “Well, I'll be seeing you guys later. I can't wait to see how all of this turns out!”

Fury rushed out to everyone's surprise.

“Hooey! That is one fast cat!” Applejack said.

“Heh, not bad but still not faster than me. I guess I got a rival on my hooves.” Rainbow said.

Twilight though was quiet. She wondered what sort of creatures are these Speed Shifters to have such vast speed.

It was now the top of noon. There was now activity in Canterlot, especially the streets where merchants sold their wares. Fury could see customers lining up for many valuables from radiant crystals to special treats like baguettes. But even though he was with Cadence at the moment, he still felt worried for his safety. Being the first of his kind to step into Equestria in so long and being seen in the city for more than a few minutes, he felt a little exposed and was anxious about what could happen.

Okay, try and calm down. It's just a few stops around the city… a very populated, high society, prestigious city with very harsh views on other creatures!

Cadence noticed the anxiety of her friend. She understood and could feel his worry.

“Hey, it’ll be okay. It's always hard going to new places. Tell you what, how about I pick the first spot we go to get you acquainted. And I know just the one.”

“Let’s hope it’s nothing too formal. Don't want to cause too much of a scene.” Fury mumbled.

Cadence shook her head. “Just the opposite. This is a place for true authentic cuisine for the average pony.”

“Okay then. But, I have to ask. If your wedding isn't for the next couple of days, why are we going through the paces of checking on progress? Wouldn't there basically be… no progress?” He asked.

“That may be true, but watching how things are starting to develop can shape how things can look in the future. Rarity will go through hundreds of wedding dress designs, Pinkie Pie will have to pick out of a good list of entertainers, Fluttershy’s animal friends will need some time to get in tune and Applejack will need to go through tons of recipes in order to find some good choices for the banquet. It's all about going through the process of elimination to suit my ideal wedding.” Cadence explained.

Fury was a bit more understanding of what she was talking about now that he knew the drill. A wedding of any kind, especially a Royal Wedding, was a big event. Planning and preparations were a must and needed to go through a long process before the lucky bride and groom could exchange vows. He had only ever attended weddings after the fact, so his scope was a bit limited on how the behind the scenes went about.

Cadence and Fury walked up to a large building and saw a sign with a chef with a fancy mustache stabbing a loaf of bread with his trident. designating the mix of pride and informality.

“Looks like a nice casual place. I like the look-” Fury stopped immediately as his nose caught the flood of new smells coming in from just standing outside. Buttercream, spices, dough, jelly and jam. Everything he smelled was so powerful that it put him in a trance of deliciousness. He hummed softly as his tail swung behind him in a sense of delight.

“Smells tasty, doesn't it?” Cadence asked with a smile.

“It's almost as if I can taste the air itself… and it tastes amazing.” Fury said with a huff.

“Yep, that's Baked Goods for you. Everypony from guards to merchants love to go here for some nice authentic treats.”

“Yeah, well, I can't wait any longer. I'm going in. I'm ready to try out some of the goods!” Fury said.

“Wha- Hey, slow down!”

Fury marched right in. He noticed in contrast to the sparkly palace, this place was the opposite. It was filled with wood and old fashioned windows. He was able to see the actual cooking process. Ponies went back and forth between stations, mixing and preparing ingredients in silver bowls with some brand new machines that he had never seen. He also saw Applejack and Twilight in the room, the former sprinting left and right while maintaining her own tasks.

“Alright Twi, the samples are ready. We should be good to go with the first batch of food.” Applejack said.

“Then it's a good thing we showed up on time.” Cadence said, the ponies around stopping what they were doing to give her a respectful bow.

“Howdy princess! We've got the sample array set up for ya to test out.”

“Thank you Applejack, but I won't be the only one.” Cadence gestured to the feline next to herm

“You got that right. I'm ready to try some stuff too. But I have to admit I'm a little surprised to see you two here? I didn't know you worked here.” Fury said.

Applejack shook her head.

“Nope, we're just here to use the kitchen here. The owner was kind enough to let us use it.” Applejack said.

“Well, technically us, but it's mostly Applejack. I don't have nearly the culinary ability as her. I'm kind of learning how to cook on the fly.” Twilight said.

“Beware that notion, Twilight's cooking has never really been too… edible. Even if she knows the recipe by heart, when it comes to putting her hooves to work… it doesn't end very well. Trust me, I foalsat her for a good couple of years.” Cadence whispered.

“Hey, I heard that!” Twilight said with a pout. “And I'm improving! From that um… time.”

“Heh, not really surprising. Reading it doesn’t beat experience as my dad says.” Fury said not so softly. Moving along from embarrassing the purple unicorn, the other three moved to a long table that featured a good amount of food. Hayburgers, Hay fries, horseshoe chips, cookies, cupcakes. Everything a pony could want was there for testing. But as the record stood, there was one outlier.

“Yeesh, is this what you guys eat? Looks like a bunch of dry straw covered in random toppings between two buns.” Fury said bluntly.

“Huh, I never thought of it that way.” Cadence admitted. “But yep this is the stuff we ponies like. It's the highest grade of hay too.”

“High grade? Ha! For me, this is what I'd use as bait to get my food to come closer. Either way, I have to accept I'm in a different world now, so I'll let it slide.” Fury said, an amused look coming from Cadence as she tested one of the burgers.

“Mmmm, that's very good. Perfectly grilled, juicy pickles, smooth and buttery buns. A good start.” Cadence said, Twilight writing her thoughts down from a distance. Next, the Hay Fries. Levitating a batch in her magic, she stuffed them in her mouth and hummed in satisfaction.

“Salted to perfection. They are a little too crispy though, perhaps with a little less time in the fryer.” She declared, Applejack nodding and Twilight taking that down.

As much as his pony friends felt satisfaction with the hay, he felt confusion and some disgust over even looking at this weird food.

“Ugh, all of this is pony food. There's nothing here that could satisfy me. And before you ask, yes, we do eat other things besides fish.” Fury said. He tapped his chin in thought at how to rectify this culinary injustice and came to a resolution.

“Hey, do you mind if I show you guys one of my favorites? It's a universal treat I'm sure everyone would love at the banquet.” Fury said. Applejack, Twilight and Cadence were skeptical, but they didn't see the harm.

“Sure thing, partner. What do ya need?” Applejack asked. “Just so long as it ain't other critters.”

“No worries, it'll be pony approved. Ok, I need 5 avocados, some bell peppers, tortilla chips, tomatoes and some spices. Salt and pepper should do.” Fury said.

“You heard him, let's get him what he needs!” Twilight called.

“Yessiree, we will!” Applejack said.

The two and many other ponies went into the kitchen to ask the baker for the food to which he agreed and picked up some tasty goods for him to use in this mystery dish. Coming back with everything he needed, he was ready to get started.

“Alright, here's everything you need. But I still don't understand what this is.” Twilight said.

“It's a snack that I used to make for myself back home. Tastes awesome! Here, let me show you what I've got.”

Getting started with a bowl and a knife, he slit the outer shells off of the avocados and dug out the good stuff. He placed them into the bowl with some salt and pepper and began mushing it all together.

“Okay, that's a good start. Now Applejack, I need you to keep mushing until it's a good paste while I dice up these bell peppers.”

“You got it! All the practice with my mashing apples will pay off.”

Applejack pressed on the avocados as if they were apples at her farm making them into a fine paste, ready for consumption. Fury added a few diced peppers and some water for consistency.

“Okay, now for the tortilla chips and tomatoes.” Fury moved over to the tortilla chips bag and popped it open. Dumping some salt into the bag he held the top and shook the bag to spread the seasoning. Cadence was watching carefully at his very impressive cooking skills, taking notes of all the meat tricks he used.

Moving a large oval serving plate he set a smaller, oval dish inside to which he directed Applejack to pour the guacamole into. Slicing the tomatoes into halves, he went back to the mashing bowl and did the same process. Salt, pepper, bell peppers, water, mush. The smell was getting to the other ponies who were watching him work and they thought it smelled pretty good.

A small bowl was filled with salsa and the chips were added on the side, some being dipped in the big dish with guac for style.

“A little more salt on top… aaaand viola!”

In front of the befuddled ponies was a strange array of chips in green and red sauces.

“Well, who will be the test tester?” Applejack asked.

“Hmmm, let me try.” Twilight says. “I'd like to see this Shifter cuisine.”

She took one of the chips, dipped it into the sauces and she ate one.

Her eyes opened wide. She was silent at first.

“Um Twilight, you there?”

“This is amazing!” Twilight said. “And I thought hayburgers were the best ever.”

Fury smiled. “Nice to see you've been converted to the right side. Well the rest of you? She gave her glowing review, so dig in!”

The other ponies helped themselves and got themselves a chip each, dipping in the guacamole, salsa or even both. All of them seemed to share the same opinion, that of satisfaction with this strange creature's culture.

“So, would the bride-to-be like to take her own turn?” Fury said, gesturing to the platter before her.

“With absolute pleasure.” Cadence already loved its savory scent. She had one and she was delighted.

“I see you like it, but maybe I should save this for later-”

“No you won't! This is the best ever!” Cadence said as she dipped and chewed multiple chips in only a few minutes.

“This is so good!” She said with a full mouth.

“Wow, I never thought I would be so good at pleasing royalty with food. I might just be a little too good at it if she's throwing her manners out the window.” Fury chuckled.

Cadence's cheeks blushed at that and stopped eating. “Well, I guess I just haven't had the chance for something so raw. I guess all the Canterlot food is good but it doesn't quite have that potency that these chips have.”

“I agree! All this fancy food ain't what I'm used to, but this is some good stuff! We should use this recipe for the wedding!” Applejack said. Fury snapped out of his prideful stance at those words.

“Recipe? Aw, darn it! I should have been writing that down for you!”

“Not to fear, I always keep some parchment on me. I was keeping track while you were making this.” Twilight said.

“Ah, of course you were.” Fury said. “Well, read it and know it well because if you don't do it just right, you'll ruin it.”

“Eeyup, that's what granny tells me with food.” Applejack said.

“Well, those chips were delicious.” Cadence said, rubbing her stomach. “How about we move onto the desserts?”

“Now that's something I can get behind.” Fury said as they moved onto the rest of the very long list of foods to try.

20 Minutes Later…

Both Cadence and Fury walked slowly along the streets of Canterlot, both overstuffed with food that they admittedly went too deep into. Their stomachs bulged a good bit and drew a couple stares from passersby.

“Ugh… maybe those treats were a bit too good. I'm so full…” Fury moaned.

“Applejack is good at what she does. She's a family pony, always making sure that everypony gets their fair share and no pony goes hungry. And with the way she can cook, she often has ponies pushing past their limits with how good it turns out.” Cadence responded, sounding just as exhausted.

Fury nodded. “Well she succeeded in that. But I don't think I can eat another food item no matter how tasty.”

“Me neither… but thankfully, we're checking on Rarity next and she's staying in one of the towers, so we can let our stomachs settle before we have to show our faces. Urp!” Cadence let out a tiny squeak of a burp that caught Fury's attention. The princess covered her muzzle, but the damage had already been done as Fury cracked a smile.

“Well, excuse you, princess.” He said with a cheeky smirk, the pink alicorn turning a shade of red that could only be matched by an apple.

“But anyways I wonder what Rarity will do with my appearance. I've never been the best at grooming, especially recently.” Fury admitted.

“Well, just prepare for some intensity. She is as she calls herself an artiste.” Cadence said in a mock fancy voice. “She means well, but just be ready.”

“I just hope she won't be as paws on as my mom was in a formal event. Goddess knows how many times she practically had a meltdown when she saw one follicle of fur out of arrangement.”

The two finally reached the tower. It was nice to be back after having such a time of ‘Testing’ the trial food, but now was the time to get serious. And what better way to get started on that path than getting a close look at the dresses for the bride and her bridesmaids. They opened the doors that lead into the tower and they got a good view of what Rarity had gotten done. Sketches of designs and arrangements lined some of the walls, fabric and cloth of multiple colors were being moved around by a blue aura, the center point being a sewing machine where Rarity was stationed.

The fashionista looked up and noticed the two coming to her. “Your highness, Night Fury! Good to see you, darlings!”

“Right back at you.” Fury said. “You sure have your hooves full trying to make these dresses. So what did you have in mind?”

“Well, I've been working on multiple designs for Cadence and her bridesmaids. But considering you're going to be a guest here too, I need to get you ready for the big day as well.” Rarity spoke.

“I don't know. Couldn't you just buy a suit for me to use? You seem like the type with bits and I didn't take the time to bring some with me myself.” He said regretfully.

“Darling, this is a wedding! We are not just going to get some cheap, store bought suit. I am going to make sure you look your best for this special occasion. Speaking of which, I need to take your measurements.” She declared, getting close to shape him up. But when she got close enough…

“Eugh! What is that wretched smell!?” She recoiled back to a safe distance and put on a decorated hazmat suit that he was surprised she had handy. Fury took a sniff of himself and did just about the same.

“Yikes! I guess I was so distracted while walking this morning that I forgot about hygiene. No problem, I can take care of that. Do either of you know where the nearest river is?” He asked casually. Rarity looked at him with a confused expression.

“River? Darling, I'm being serious. I need you to be cleaned up and tidy!”

“I'm being serious too. Nothing washes off the stench like a good plunge in the river. We do it at home all the time!” Fury said, causing Rarity to hit her limit.

Wump!

“Uh… did I say something offensive?” Fury asked worriedly.

“At least to her.” Cadence chimed in. “But Rarity’s right, washing off in a river isn't exactly the best way to get clean. At least not in Equestria.”

“Well, it's a different story back home. Where I'm from, the rivers and streams nearby are our chosen place of hygiene. Unlike here, we don't have… what was it again? Plunging? Plumage?”

“Plumbing?” Cadence corrected.

“Exactly! The landscape doesn't fit the bill. Plus, with the amount of creatures that dig underground and could just bite through the metal pipes, the repair cost just wouldn't be worth it. So we do things the old fashioned way.” Fury said proudly. Cadence got worried about the ramifications that could cause to a creature’s health, and more so the limits of what they would do. So she decided to ask the big question.

“So, you do everything the old fashioned way when it comes to hygiene?” Cadence asked nervously.

“Yep.”

“Washing off, brushing your teeth and the like?”

“Uhuh.”

“And even when-”

“Yes, even answering the call of nature.” Fury said.

“Oh sweet mother of my Auntie Celestia…” Cadence shuddered in disgust at the realization of where Fury had come from. “Okay, from now on… let us never talk of that again. Agreed?”

“Agreed.” Fury answered.

Rarity tried to resist fainting and tried to regain her bearings. “Well darling, I appreciate your way of… doing things. But I think you'll find the way ponies clean up just as pleasant. Have you ever heard of a shower?”

“Um…”

“Never mind. Follow me.” Rarity said.

Later on…

“Wow, this water sure is hot!” Fury said, calling out from the bathroom. “And it's temperature controlled too!? Usually we'd have to find a hot spring to get this type of water!”

Cadence and Rarity waited outside one of the bathrooms inside the castle while Fury got used to the idea of a shower. It took them a while to get him to understand what everything was for and making sure he knew that the soap may have smelled good, but it wasn't tasty.

During his time inside, Celestia and Luna passed by and saw what was happening. They were both instantly brought to a state of confusion when they saw Rarity and their niece waiting by the bathroom.

“Might I ask why you are standing outside the bathroom, Niece? I thought you were supposed to be watching over the progress for the wedding?” Luna asked.

“She is. But I cannot focus with Night Fury carrying around such a stench distracting me.” Rarity said dramatically. “And worst of all, he doesn't even use plumbing! I had to show him how to use a shower! Besides, I would never dream of bathing in Canterlot's waters.”

“Bathing in rivers?” Luna asked. “Our species hasn't had to do that for hundreds of moons.”

“Not Speed Shifters. Apparently, they're unable to use plumbing due to the harsh terrain and animals that would damage the infrastructure if they did use standard plumbing. And the extent to which they take this system is… disturbing to say the least.” Cadence explained.

“Well, perhaps, but considering how they have survived and thrived for so long, they've made the most out of the minimal infrastructure. I guess for Fury and his kind, they've adapted. Even if Shifters no longer live in grand cities of old like before, they make the most of it.” Celestia said.

Rarity, as much as she was still not used to it, could understand. “Hmmm, I never thought of it that way. I guess one does what they need to make their goals.” Rarity said with more respect. “I still think the shower is better though and I have a feeling Fury does too now.”

Soon enough, the bathroom door opened with a hiss of steam and the smell of strawberry shampoo.

“Hoowee, that felt so good! Haven't felt this clean in ages.” Fury said confidently, but Cadence stopped him.

“Hold on, Fury. You're still forgetting something.”

“What?” The pink alicorn pointed to his still dripping fur.

“You can't just go out like that. You'll get the floors all slippery. You need this towel.” Cadence said, levitating a towel to him.

“Oh! Okay, that's fine. But it's a little hard for those of us that don't have… you know what to get all the tough spots.”

“Ah. Of course darling. Take your time. I know I sure do.” Rarity said.

“That's an understatement.” Cadence said with a chuckle.

Fury took his time to get all dried up especially since Rarity wouldn’t expect any less. After a little while, he was finally ready to go out.

“Well, I'm all clean now, m’ladies. What's the verdict?” Cadence came in for an official sniff test.

“Looking and smelling good, Fury. Now, back to business. Rarity, I'd assume you have some initial sketches on hoof?” Cadence asked.

“Why most certainly. While you were showering I made some adjustments to my sketches. I'm sure you'll find them stunning.” Rarity said as she took her bejeweled sketchbook and showed crude pencil outlines of the different dresses and suits with each page. Fury took notice of the color pallets Rarity had lined up next to each drawing, a guide for what color fabric to use. This caught Fury's attention and brought up a long standing question he had.

“Wow, all of these look pretty snazzy. But, here's a question about a little thing I've been confused about. Not the suits, but the wedding in general. Why is it such taboo for anyone to be wearing bright colors at the reception?” Fury asked.

“Ah, I see you haven't really delved into the world of marriage.” Celestia chirped. “Well, it mainly comes from the thought of not wanting to outshine the bride and groom. Of course, a wedding is about two individuals becoming eternal partners, so it is expected to have them be the most recognizable among the crowds. And it becomes even more important if the bride or groom is of high stature, like my niece being a Princess and her husband being the Captain of the Royal Guard. So it is customary for all others to wear neutral colors. Black, gray, variations of brown and so on.”

“Oh I got it!” Fury said, nodding in realization. “Yeah, for us guests, we’re the ones being honored to see them, not the other way around. Besides, we Shifters like to blend in. We hunt our prey in the dark, so we need to stay neutral among the vegetation.”

Rarity smiled. “It took me a long time to realize that you can't stand out with your clothes all the time, but for me I now know my assignment and if you're happy with the outfit then I can proceed to fit you in one.”

“Hey, the sooner the better.”

“Perfect! Now follow me, and I'm going to fit you with the suit you'll love. Come along, I still need to take your measurements.” Rarity said with pride as she led the charge towards fitting both the bride and her guest with a suit and dress.

“Uh Rarity, I understand you need to judge what my dimensions are for the suit, but is my tail length really necessary?” Fury asked. The group of now five were standing in the tower she'd been working in. Rarity had taken it upon herself to get every detail for her design of his suit.

“Oh, but of course! As a fashion designer, every measurement we take is important for understanding what a piece of clothing needs. I couldn't just make a wedding dress without taking Cadence's wingspan into account!” Rarity said. “Trust me, it prevents awkward accidents while walking. I learned that the hard way.” She cringed.

“Okay, you're the expert.” Fury sighed with an eye roll. She then proceeded to get his tail length, height from paw to ear, body length from chest to flank and neck diameter.

“Alright, now we move on to your barrel. Let's just see how your figure looks.”

Fury mustered the slightest bit of his patience he had to stand still as Rarity looked to and fro from her tape and Fury.

“Hmm… Interesting.” Rarity said.

“Huh? What's going on?” Fury asked, wondering what it was.

“Your barrel is fairly round for your stature. It gives an interesting cylindrical shape. I'm not used to seeing ponies shaped like this.” Rarity said. Like a ripe strawberry, Fury's face went a bright red, practically shining in front of the princesses as the fashionista indirectly called him chubby.

“I see. I guess most ponies aren't fat like me.” Fury said.

Rarity then panicked. “No darling, I'm not calling you that! It's just… different. You have to understand, I see so many clients, I'm used to seeing the same old body types. But with you, it's a chance to try something new. To give me a new challenge. I'm actually glad to be making an outfit for you along with Princess Cadence's taller size.”

“Even if I look like a squishy blackberry?” Fury said, his face still glowing red.

“Oh don't beat yourself up, I think you look fine.” Cadence stepped in. “I wouldn't be so blunt with my observations, obviously…”

Rarity took a back step and changed a few shades herself.

“But you look good the way you are. Who cares if you're a little pudgy, my Auntie Celestia says that's a sign of a good appetite. Besides, I wasn't so different from you when I was a teen.” Cadence materialized a picture with her magic and showed it to him. From the image, he saw that she was much different. She was less lanky, a bit shorter and much more chubby.

“Woah, you looked way different! You had as much of a tummy as I do.”

“It was one reason I got into so many athletic clubs at school from softball to buckball to even competitive swimming. I always felt self conscious of my tubby look, so I pushed myself harder than needed. But, a bit of encouragement from my elders taught me that just because you don't like your look doesn't mean you can't enjoy life the way you should. You may be a little more round, but you can still enjoy everything life has to offer without the feeling of guilt.”

“Even so, you still have an appetite that could rival a competitive eater.” Celestia said out of nowhere. Fury and Rarity gasped at the ensuing drama.

“Such a scandalous move, princess!” Rarity said with a hoof to her chest.

“Auntie!” Cadence squealed.

“Oh don't act like you didn't go undercover a few times to buy some greasy Hayburgers when you were younger, my dear niece. You were practically addicted to them.”

Fury was surprised that Cadence had so much hidden baggage about her figure, but was even more taken aback by Celestia openly embarrassing her. Although, it wasn't too far fetched considering family, whether blood or adoptive, can be just as ruthless. It had him so surprised that he did the unthinkable.

“Heh… hehehehahahaha! Ahahahahaha!” The princesses looked at Fury in surprise. He was laughing. Actually laughing. He had finally broken out of his shell and gotten truly comfortable with his new life. Cadence and Celestia smiled the most at this new development, his transformation into a more social being coming with a feeling of content and excitement.

“Fury… you're laughing. You're really laughing!” Cadence said gleefully, momentarily forgetting her aunt exposing her.

“I guess my family aren't the only ones with entertaining snarky comebacks. You guys take the cake. I hope you don't have any juicy secrets too, Celestia.” Fury said with an evil smile.

“Oh I do have a few.” Celestia said with a chuckle. “Many more embarrassing moments from my niece's time in Canterlot.”

“More importantly, dear aunt of mine…” Cadence snapped while trying to get away from the spotlight. “Night Fury, you were actually laughing. You finally broke out of your shell and got comfortable with yourself. I'm proud of you. You're taking your first steps to easing your complex emotions. Tell me, how do you feel?”

Fury was a bit silent. He had to admit he was surprised he felt this way. But it felt good. It felt familiar. “I feel like I'm… home. Among creatures I can trust. Not even ones who are polite but don't really open up. I mean I feel serious connections, like I could tell you anything and not be truly judged for it.” Fury said warmly.

Celestia and Cadence smiled at that.

“Well, I say the feeling is mutual.” Celestia said. “Many times besides my staff and recently my sister, I often feel alone despite having so many guests to entertain. Guests who are only interested in my favors. Not to me personally. But you, Fury. You've been nothing but a delight in this palace. I can't name a time I was able to go pranking like I did in my fillyhood.”

Cadence rolled her eyes. “You can say that again.”

“Hey, it's all part of the fun.” Fury said. “I guess we're all just a bunch of crazy nuts. Each one of us. And we don't have to hide that from ourselves.”

“Oh I can relate to that too, darling.” Rarity said, finishing up the last of her measurements. “Alright, that should do it. I'll get started on designing your suit in the meantime.”

“Thanks for the help, Rarity. Now, what's next on the checklist?” Cadence pulled the checklist from under her wing and checked its contents. “The next stop on our list is… entertainment!”

“That must be Pinkie Pie! I wonder what she's got waiting for us?” Fury said.

“You wouldn't mind if my sister and I tagged along, would you Cadence? We have basically nothing to do now that your eventual wedlock is upcoming.” Celestia asked.

“Of course, Auntie! The more the merrier! Let's get going, Pinkie should be setting up in the ballroom for the after-party.”

Fury was curious to find out what Pinkie had planned. Rarity may have been overly meticulous in her etiquette. But Pinkie would be the complete opposite. Pure chaos.

But he liked a little chaos. It makes it fun.

Fury smiled as he made it to the doors with his royal escort. But before he went in, he heard something distressing. Fury's ears perked up and his eyes went slit, catching the eldest ruler's attention.

“Is something the matter? What do you hear?” Celestia asked, getting her fellow royals to turn her attention to him.

“It sounds like Pinkie, but she's not happy. Sounds like someone's giving her a lot of jaw about her style choices. Posh accent, using big words… sounds like the type of guy to roll his R’s when he's ticked off.” Fury said.

“Is that so?” Cadence asked. “Just who could he be?”

“Only one way to find out.” Fury put his paws to the door and forced them open with a grunt. Inside, there were streamers, a DJ booth, balloons, and a cannon of some sort. But at the moment, the epicenter of the group's attention was directed to Pinkie trying to reason with a white unicorn with a blue mane and a monocle.

“Who's the tool? The guy looks old, disagreeable and… extremely punchable.” Fury snarled, a little defensive with how Pinkie was basically under attack.

“Fury! Don't say that!” Cadence said with a whisper.

“Oh come on, she's getting verbally pummeled. I'm not standing for this, not after I let it happen to me.” Fury said, stepping up. “Hey, snowball!”

Both Pinkie and the unicorn, confused, looked at Fury.

“Um, what exactly are you referring to, good sir?” The unicorn asked, adjusting his eyepiece.

“I'm referring to you, genius!” Fury said, marching up to him.

“Well, um, nice to meet you. I'm Fancy Pants.” He said a bit confused. “Look, can we talk later? I have some business to deal with-”

“Cut the pleasantries. You better start making sense of why Pinkie here is getting all of that yakkin’ from you!”

“Oh that.” Fancy Pants said, now knowing he had to justify himself to a potential friend. “Well, if you really must know, Miss Pinkie Pie has for whatever reason decided to decorate Her Majesty's palace with all sorts of strange devices. Party balloons and DJ area! This is supposed to be a formal area. And as one of those in charge of this palace's running, I cannot tolerate this.”

From that moment, Fury understood just who he was talking to, his face going deadpan. “Oh boy… let me guess… you're the ‘Royal Dinner Party’ type, aren't you?”

“I do enjoy some seared asparagus with a side of caviar, why do you ask?” Fancy Pants said.

Fury just sighed. “Celestia, come get ya pompous pin cushion.”

Celestia also sighed. This was already getting too complicated.

Fury looked at him. “Listen uh… Fancy Pants was it? You might think you know what's best. But I can tell you, you don't. My friend Pinkie is trying to make this a great party for the Princess of Love. And we don't need you trying to mess that up.”

“Mess that up you say? I'm just trying to get things in order! Weddings have a certain way about them and this wasn't what I was expecting!”

“What you were expecting!? This isn't about you! It's about her and her husband coming together for the rest of their days! What gives you the right to bust in and start giving Pinkie all this trouble when she was specifically asked to do this job?”

“It wasn't what I intended her to do!” Fancy Pants said now arguing as loudly. “I don't think you'd be pleased if your butler gave you a cucumber sandwich instead of a parfait like you asked.”

“Heh, still as fancy as ever. Well let me tell you what you really are-”

ALRIGHT, THAT IS ENOUGH YOU TWO!” A thundering voice called out, Celestia turning out to be the orchestrator.

“We are going to settle this like adults! This is a time of celebration, not pointless bickering.” She turned to Fury. “Now, allow me, Fury, to talk to Mr. Fancy Pants. I will settle things.”

“But Princess-”

“Trust me. I know what I'm doing.” Celestia said, looking at him.

Reluctantly, Fury nodded.

Celestia walked up to Fancy Pants. “Now, I know this type of wedding is not the usual, but that is fine. Pinkie Pie, if you've heard of her, has given great joy to me and her friends. Rest assured that this wedding will be only enhanced with her unusual but entertaining methods.”

Fancy Pants respected Celestia, she being the one who introduced his family to the high life going back to his great grandfather. Everything she had provided for his family has gotten him to where he is now, so the least he could do was admit to his errors.

“I suppose I may have stepped over my boundaries a bit. I had not been kept abreast of who was in charge of what preparations, so my instincts kicked in. I believe I owe both of you an apology.” Fancy Pants said.

“You're all fine and dandy in my book!” Pinkie said, but Fury wasn't so easily swayed.

“Oh no, you're not getting that from me. I made that mistake once, I'm not going to do it again. You don't get acceptance from me with that disrespect, you earn it. And you've got a long way before you’re gonna be able to look at the bright side.”

Celestia and Cadence sighed at this. They should have known from his encounters with Luna, he was one to take things especially personally.

“...Then what can I do to earn it?” Fancy Pants asked.

“Well, the first thing you can do is leave now that you know you don't have anything to contribute.” Fury said. “Then maybe we can talk.”

“I understand-”

Then Pinkie stopped them. “Nonsense! Now that we got this mopey business outta the way, how about you have one of my pastries? I made it while you two were talking!”

Fancy Pants shrugged “Uh I don't really think-”

But she stuffed it in his face anyway.

He seemed to like it.

“Why it's absolutely stupendous. I really am thankful for you forgiving me.” He said before leaving.

Fury was a bit confused how Pinkie despite being berated could still be so friendly to him.

“Tsk, weren't you the least bit angry with him? I know I was. I don't let things go by so easily.”

“Fury, I only know one thing. And that's a happy pony with a satisfied tummy.” Pinkie said. “What matters is the present after all. And speaking of the present, care for a bite?”

All Fury could do was look back at the exit and snarl softly at who he had just been verbally challenged by. Ever since that fateful day, he wanted to go back and blow up at the ones he wanted to get back at. Everyone who ever disrespected his honor or stuck out their chest in superiority was a target, and it didn't help that Fancy Pants did much the same.

“Sure whatever.” Fury said getting her pastry. He was still annoyed and confused by her lenience but decided to pass it up.

But then he forgot about that when his mouth chewed on this new treat she'd made.

“Wow.” He said with a stuffed mouth. “This is tasty! Is this cherry?”

“Yep! Just like Mr and Mrs Cake taught me!” Pinkie said. “If you want more I got a whole bunch for you. And in different flavors too.”

“Don't need to tell me, I can already smell ‘em. Strawberry, Lemon Meringue, Raspberry… Cheesecake too?”

“Yepperoni! It seems you are a fellow connoisseur of sweets my feline friend! Let's go and give you the fruit extravaganza of a lifetime!”

She said, dashing to the kitchen and five seconds later, having all of the sweets. Fury couldn't understand how she did it so quickly. But he was too interested in the sweets to care.

He chowed down on all of the sweets like a ravenous animal. Even doing tricks to catch a few like a puppy.

Celestia looked relieved. “Leave it to the Element of Laughter to bring a smile to our guest with a bit of sweets.”

“Mmm true. But our guest could afford to eat a bit more… professionally.” Luna said, rolling her eyes.

“You know I heard that, smart lips.” Fury deadpanned, catching Luna by surprise.

“I forgot. You have good hearing. I still don't deny what I said though.” Luna said.

“Hey, I'm professional. A professional eater, that is. This is how I honor the food I've been gifted with. By not holding back and showing my appreciation my way. And let's all be fair here, if there's any creature that could use an attitude overturn, it's you.”

“The feeling is mutual.” Luna shot back.

Fury shrugged and kept on eating. If she wanted to be that way, fine. But he had some food to eat.

“Well, while our feline friend is buried in buttercream, I suppose I should get to the true intention of our arrival. Pinkie, how is the entertainment and decorating going?” Cadence asked, the party planner being all too excited to show off her work.

Pinkie jumped near Cadence, a bit too close. “It's going super, abso-positively well! I decorated nearly every place with balloons and streamers. The party cannons are in place. I have a many games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey as well as-”

“A lot right?” Cadence said interrupting. “Good work Pinkie, I knew I could count on you.”

“I still have a few more sweets to distribute to guests, but it will be done!” Pinkie said.

Fury was finally done eating all of the pastries. “Ahh! Whew, I haven't had sweets that good since I snatched cookies under my mom's nose.”

Fury gasped and covered his mouth.

Uh oh… TMI, Fury, TMI…

“Um… W-what I meant to say was that she-”

“Don't even try. It's not the worst thing you probably did.” Luna said. “Besides, my sister can fully relate to you stealing sweets. Right, Celestia?”

Celestia blushed in embarrassment. “Yes. Yes it is. I was a filly after all.”

“But you do it even to this day.” Luna said with a smirk.

Now that the spotlight was off of him, Fury laughed. “Gee, Luna, you are savage to everyone today. I gotta hand that to you.”

Luna drank some tea she conjured up. “Hmmmm, I suppose I do have a certain wave of snappy responses that washes over from time to time.”

“To think, I thought you'd just be a plank of wood. I think I'm starting to look forward to you.” Fury said.

After sipping some tea, Luna looked at Fury. “And I thought you'd just be a vulgar guest, and while you still are in a way, you too interest me.”

Fury smiled at this as well as Cadence and Celestia. “Glad to see you favor the brighter side of me. Anywho, this place is looking good, Pinks! Say, what kind of music do you ponies listen to anyway? Most of the time, I've only been around old jazz and classical records thanks to my ever so proper mother. Nearly drove me insane.”

“Oh I know that feeling! You my friend, deserve the superest, funtime tunes! I'm a bit of a musician myself.” Pinkie said, grabbing something out of her tail. Which happened to be a drum and an accordion, much to Fury's confusion. “Get ready for the funnest polka session of life! I call it… Ponka Polka.” She said dramatically.

Pinkie then played the giant funny looking instruments. Fury could tell this was different from l the calm tunes from his village. This was meant to get others moving, and it definitely worked as even the princesses did a little jig.

Fury was amazed at how fun and energetic Pinkie's music playing was. He had a good feeling about this.

“Those are some really great tunes! Y'know, I had a bit of vocal range when I was a kid. Never really showed it off though. Hang on, gotta grab something!” Fury sped off to go grab something from his bags. Soon enough, he came back with a golden egg looking contraption.

“Oooh, what's this fancy thing?” Pinkie asked.

“It's a Memory Sealer. Back in the early years of Shifter culture, we found a special type of crystal that, when touched, ran you through your entire life in a single instance. Y'know how they say in dangerous situations, your life flashes before your eyes? Well, this crystal we found did exactly that! So, our best sorcerers went to work refining its abilities and made these things. They link to a Shifter’s mind and store all of their memories from birth to present. And let's just say, my best memories didn't go missing.”

Fury pressed a button on the side and set it down. As if a flower started blooming out of the device, the top split away to reveal a red crystal in the middle which glowed a bright color before displaying a screen that went back to the chosen memory.

In The Past…

“Ugh, my parents are such losers!” A young Fury spoke as he walked. Being young and all, the feeling of having your parents tell you what to do was nothing he was exclusive to. Every one of his friends had the same idea, always having to deal with the tyranny that was parental intervention. His best friend, Jade, had the same gripes.

“You're telling me! I mean, come on! Getting grounded for a week for a little water balloon fight that just so happened to catch the chief in the crossfire!? Total overreaction!” The green eyed Shifter lamented. The two had been best friends practically since birth, coming together with similar ideals and interests that led them to be attached at the flank ever since.

“Man, I wish I didn't have my parents bugging me all the time. It's like they hate the very thought of fun with their entire being! I can't think of a time when my mom wasn't hounding me to ‘Keep your manners up to date’ or ‘Don’t be so brash’. I don't even know what brash means!” Fury huffed.

“It means crazy, dude.” Jade deadpanned.

“Oh…” Fury said, sounding embarrassed at his lack of vocabulary. Just then, another voice chimed in.

“My parents suck!” Said a female voice. Looking over, Jade and Fury made the voice out to be Silver Bullet, another friend of theirs.

“Hey Silver. Your folks giving you grief too?” Fury asked.

“More like the seven stages of grief! My mom told me I was the worst out of the lot of us because I was the one who landed the hit on the chief!” Silver cried. Jade and Fury had only known her for a few weeks at the time, but her life was no secret.

Being the daughter of one of the council members, she and her home life was pretty well known. She was not only a council member’s daughter, but she was the oldest of three, meaning she fell under the curse of The Eldest Child. Always catching the blame for everything, including stuff that wasn't her fault and light-hearted mistakes. And while the BFF duo felt bad for her, they were simultaneously grateful they were born as single children.

“Well at least they treat all troublemakers equally, regardless of familial status.” Jade said snarkily.

“Gee, thanks. What a relief.” Silver said, sticking her tongue out.

Fury yawned. “You guys gonna be able to survive the boredom of home isolation?”

Jade shrugged. “Eh, I can manage. My parents usually think I’m okay. They won't make me do too much. I guess those good grades at school help a good bit.”

“Lucky you. My parents don't let me off the hook at all. I'll be in it for the long haul. Probably have to care for my little siblings.” She said, shuddering.

Fury was dissatisfied with the turn out of the simple fun they had a few days before. If anything, the adults were in the wrong.

“You know, one of these days, I can't wait to finally be my own Shifter. Maybe I'll run off to distant lands, sail the seas, discover ancient ruins. Anything to escape being told what to do all the time.” Fury said. But then, he got an idea.

“Y’know what? No more far off dreams in the future. I'm gonna jumpstart that independence right now! Jade… we're getting the Purple Paw Gang together again.”

Jade was shocked. That little group had been inactive for so long, especially after they'd been split with school and distance between houses.

“A-are you sure? We haven't grouped up in so long.” Jade said, a little unsure.

“I'm absolutely sure! We need to take a stand, and that starts today. Make the call. Silver, you're with me. I'm gonna start a concert!”

“Look I know life's boring here, but our goal should be to get back our reputation.” Jade said. “At least so we won't do even more chores-”

“No. Fury's right!” Silver said, stomping her paw. “We can choose to cower and live a life half-lived or we can choose to live on the edge.” She said, trying to sound cool. “You really think we can do that, Fury? Go back to those good old days?”

Fury nodded. “Yep! We'll get those exclusive Purple Paw Gang Scarves we made, and we will do all the fun activities we did back then. We went too soft today, so let's instead go all out.” Fury said.

“Yeah, now you're talking!” Silver cheered.

“I don't know…” Jade skeptically mumbled.

“Come on, you know deep down the spirit of adventure beckons to you.” Silver said, sticking her paw out. “I can see it in your eyes.”

“Yeah, loosen up a bit! We've been BFF’s for years and I never saw you back out of an opportunity to hang out with me. So come on, let's set the record straight!” Fury confidently declared, doing much the same.

“Well…” Jade then smiled. “Okay fine, you convinced me. Besides, I gotta keep you two from getting into too much trouble.” He said putting his paw out.

“Then let's talk about what to do next...”

One Hour and Multiple Invitations Later…

By the time noon had given way to the afternoon, every kid that was associated with the Purple Paw Gang, veteran members and new inductees, were grouped up around what they liked to call ‘The Den’. It was a tree-filled area with hollowed out trunks and holes in the treetops to serve as clubhouse rooms with a big Oak tree as its centerpiece.

Around the area, everyone was having a good time. Shifters were buying snacks with trades of valuable items they'd accrued, making crafts with the forest's plentiful treasure box of goodies and just chatted up after having been inactive for so long.

Meanwhile, Silver was setting up the last of the things needed for Fury to host his little performance. Giving a thumbs up to him off-stage, he gave her a nod and allowed her to get the rest of the gang’s attention.

“What's up everyone?! You enjoying yourselves today?”

“Yeah!!!” All the members said.

“It's been a while since our organization was made. We got older and the grown ups wanted to make us more ‘Responsible’ and to be ‘Mature Members Of Society’.”She said in air quotes with disgust.

“Booooo!” The crowds answered in a similar tone.

“But that all stops now! We're kids, we're meant to have freedom, ideas, fun! And that's what we're gonna do today. Ladies and Gentlecats, please welcome the founder of our cause… Night Fury!”

“Yeah! Let's see him! The Savior from Lameness!” One cub said.

“Fury, Fury, Fury!” The chant cried out.

But there was no one there.

“Uh Fury, where are you?” Jade asked.

His answer came quickly when he saw a lightning infused jolt come from a tree and landed right in the speaking area. It was none other than Night Fury.

“What’s up Thunder Hollow!?” Fury called out, nothing but cheers coming from the crowds.

“You all know me as the founder of the Purple Paw Gang, our little group away from the turmoil and tyranny of responsibility and rules. Well, we sort of fell apart after a while. School and our parents are keeping us away. But not today!” Fury declared, more appraisal coming from the kids of Thunder Hollow.

“As you all know, a little water balloon fight broke out in the center of town. And in a stroke of bad luck, the chief just so happened to catch a stray from Silver here. And as expected, our parents had to bring the hammer down and ground us for it.” He said somberly, getting boo’s and raspberries at the mention of it.

“We all know how terrible it is to be forced to sit inside, do chores and read books while we ‘Think about what we did’. Well I'm gonna make sure you remember who you are! We're not just kids… we're not even the Purple Paw Gang… We're the freedom fighters taking on the war on fun! And I think a little song is just what we need to boost our spirits. What do ya say!?”

Everyone knew what this meant. The anthem of their group.

Silver got the drums and Jade the flute as musical accompaniment. And for Fury, all he needed was his voice.

🎶It's not easy being me! Wash your face and wash your fur!🎶

🎶Nag nag nag, It's just not fair, we're the Purple Paw Gang!🎶

🎶We’re so done with school, we're gonna rule! And when we win, we'll do our thing.🎶

🎶And then our lives will be so sweet! Now say it with meeeeee!🎶

Meanwhile, in Thunder Hollow…

All the adults were confused. They could hear music akin to a rock concert, but no event was scheduled to happen today.

“That's strange. I don't remember any music festival happening today.” Fury's mother said, his father nodding in agreement to the thought.

“Me neither. The chief would have said something or at least made an announcement of changes to happen to the town to accommodate. But nothing has changed.” Said Silver's mom.

“If anything, I'd think this is coming from elsewhere. The sound does seem to be further out.” Jade's father spoke. The parents agreed and decided to find the source of the music. They grouped together with a few more adults to venture out a ways to find the source. They didn't have to travel far as the sound grew much louder, often a few minutes of walking. And what they stumbled upon was both surprising and magnificent.

🎶It's a bother being young, parents yell and teachers teach!🎶

🎶But now we say: “IT STOPS TODAY!”, so sing it boldlyyyy!🎶

🎶Na na na, na na nay! The Purple Paw Gang rules okay!🎶

🎶Now let's all ride and have our day, we're going crazyyyyy!🎶

The music ended and the crowd of kids cheered like mad.

“Woohoo! That was awesome!” The kids cried.

“Stick it to the system!”

Fury took a bow along with Jade and Silver. “Thank you. Thank you everyone! It's nice to know we still got it! Beat that, mom and dad!”

“We may be old, but I believe we can be just as out there.” A voice finally piped in. Every kid gasped and looked behind them, into the shadow of the treeline. Moments later, Silver's mom, Jade's dad and Fury's parents emerge from the trees along with a few other grown ups.

“Oh no.” Silver said. “Is that-”

“Oh brother.” Jade said facepalming.

“Mom?! Dad!?” Fury asked.

Every cub could frightfully see the adults in their midst.

“Uh hi! We were just, uh, practicing for the uh… talent show.” Fury said quickly, trying to deflect any incoming trouble.

“Yeah, and you gotta admit it's pretty cool huh?” Silver bragged unaware she wasn't helping.

“I see… and would that talent show be accepting of you spearheading a revolution over your parents?” Fury's mom asked. At that moment, Fury knew he was done for. He knew he couldn't lie about what they were doing and laid down his barriers.

Fury sighed. “Okay guys, the gig is up. We've been made. Let's turn ourselves in. No fighting the inevitable at this point.”

Everyone in the crowd hung their heads and turned together, walking to their parents to take their sentences. But what they didn't expect was their parents to actually disagree with them.

“Now hold on. I never said you should be ashamed of this.” Fury's mom spoke, getting everyone else to look up again.

“Mom?”

“Your mother's right, champ. This may be a bit of a surprise to us but… we're not mad. As a matter of fact, this little concert you put together taught us something about how we treat all of you.” Fury's dad spoke up.

“He's right. I know I gave you a lot of grief about hitting the chief with that water balloon, Silvy. But this little get together showed me that… you were just having a little fun and a little accident happened.” Silver’s mom said.

“She's right, Jade. As adults, we see the chief as an important figure. A god, if you will. And his word is what makes things happen around here. When we saw that little mishap go down, we only focused on how it would affect our standing. But then again, you all have just as much of a say in how that happened as we would have. And we didn't give you much say at all.”

All of the kids were surprised at what they were hearing. The adults were admitting that they were wrong about their judgment and were apologizing? To them, this was a major development.

“Dang, I never thought you guys could actually be cool.” Fury admitted bluntly. “Well at least mom. No offense.”

Fury's mom laughed. “Well sweetie, sometimes us adults have to come to our senses about things we may not understand. We may not like to admit it, but our age doesn't exactly correlate to whether we're smarter. Just know that while someone may be above you in terms of experience at one thing, that doesn't automatically give them the right to talk to you about what you do.”

Fury smiled a satisfied smile at hearing that. Getting to know that his word was actually valued was a beautiful thing. He may have been one of the more wild types, but to be told that he had just as much wisdom as a full grown Shifter was a whole other level of pride stacked onto his tiny body.

“Thanks mom, it feels good to know you all understand where we came from. C'mon guys, let's go grab some snacks! And from now on, The Purple Paw Gang is staying together!” The crowd of kids cheered at the thought of being able to convene more often, wanting to get more entangled with those they called their brethren and form a tighter bond for years to come.

In The Present…

The little device closed automatically and shut down the projection, Fury's memory having been displayed in full to all around. Well, almost anyway.

“Wowie, you really did have a singing voice back then! But, how come your parents looked blurry?” Pinkie asked. But she got no answer. Looking over, she saw Fury standing still, looking down at the device with a few wet spots on his cheeks.

“Yoohoo, Equestria to Fury! You there?” Pinkie said, waving a hoof in front of his face. He eventually snapped out of his reminisce and focused on what Pinkie had asked.

“Huh? Oh, sorry! Got a little distracted there.” Fury said, discreetly wiping away the tears so as to not raise the concern of the pink party planner. “I haven't really used this thing in a while, so the gem inside must be a little dirty. I’ll get around to cleaning it so I can show the full picture sometime.”

“Okie Dokie Lokie! Well, I better get back to getting this place ready for the wedding. Cause I may be a good party planner, but this is my biggest job yet! Can't leave it hanging for too long.” Pinkie said, bouncing back to her plans.

“Sure, no problem.” Fury said simply before sighing heavily. Cadence walked up to him.

“You were having a bit of trouble getting through that, weren't you?” She asked, placing a hoof on his shoulder in support.

“A little. It's a part of the reason why I haven't touched the thing in so long. It's just a reminder of all that I could have had if I didn't get the incredibly short end of the stick later on. Sure, it's one of my favorite memories, but…”

“All it does is bring back the sadness of what you had to endure for so long.” Celestia piped up. “It isn't too far off from what I had to go through while taking on the preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration.”

“Summer Sun Celebration? What's that?” Fury asked.

“A celebration held to celebrate the longest day of summer and, coincidentally, to commemorate the day I rose to power as Equestria's next princess after me and Luna's mother. To my subjects, it is a day to rejoice in happiness over another blessed summer and the health of their beloved ruler. But for me… it was just another terrible reminder that I'd had to banish my own sister for 1000 years.”

“Yeah, I can imagine. That must have been the worst. Family and clan are everything to us Shifters, after all.”

“Even so, I myself believe that what you had to go through was worse.” Luna said, shocking the black feline. “I specialize in curing those of their mental ailments, mostly because of my ability to see a creature's dreams. But that isn't the only thing I can do. I can also reach into the memories of someone to find out what may be bothering them in an effort to provide the best help I can. And yours… were rather harrowing.”

Fury's jaw dropped at the implications.

“Wait, you dug into my memories?” Fury said, sounding a little offended and confused.

“Not voluntarily, mind you. My magic was passively triggered when I sensed the emotional tension you felt meeting my sister's pupil and her friends. Through that, my mind was instinctively treated to your worst memories in order to help you heal.” Luna explained, defusing the situation before things got heated.

“I saw everything you had to go through, every thought that went through your mind, every scathing insult thrown at you. And I can say, from even what I went through, that I wouldn't wish that upon even those who said I should be imprisoned for my high treasonous actions.”

Everypony else seemed shocked. Even Celestia was somewhat taken aback, though she expected something much different in terms of Fury's reaction to his wishes being violated.

Night Fury just stood there, thinking about what he had just been told. The same mare who was imprisoned in the moon for 1000 years for wishing eternal night upon Equestria, effectively stunting her ability to effectively co-rule the nation she was sworn to protect and leaving a bad taste in everypony’s mouth, was saying that she felt he had it worse.

“So… I guess you know what I've been feeling, huh? I guess I have someone else to know my traumatic life story.” He said with a grim chuckle. “I was really trying to forget those times, to be honest. There's a reason I don't talk much with the other villagers these days.”

“This is just the usual routine for me.” Luna said. “Many worries and burdens are laid bare in the world of dreams. But it's not for amusement. I have these abilities to help others settle these dark affairs. And perhaps I can help yours.”

Fury gave a long sigh at that. “I doubt it's that simple, princess. I've been at this for years. Trying to fight myself from taking that fatal dive to solve my problems. This isn't just some pick up and play situation where I can just change.”

“I understand that. But as Cadence has told you, this is a healing process. A soldier cannot simply come home from war with battle scars, place a bandaid over it and call it a day. It is a long and often strenuous time of recuperation and acceptance. I promise you, we will help you fight what you're going through.” Luna said. “Just like I have to help many of our brave stallions with their trauma, so we shall help you.”

He looked around and everyone gave a supportive smile and nod. Fury had to admit, at first he didn't like others knowing his private life but now he feels a comfort in them.

“Thanks guys.” Fury said softly. “Now, to change the subject. Where are we headed next?”

Cadence thought about it. “Hmmm. Well, with the outfits and party preparations dealt with…” Then it came to her. “I know, the musical accompaniment! But not the organist or violinist. But the bird choir, led by Fluttershy.”

“Wait Fluttershy? You mean the one who could barely talk?” Fury asked.

“Her social skills around fellow ponies might not be the best, but her skills around animals is another story.” Celestia said. “I'm sure you'd love to see what new animals live in the Castle gardens.

“Well, no time like the present. C'mon let's go see.” And with that, they left the ballroom to see what progress was being made in terms of the orchestra.

Later on, in the Castle gardens…

While Fury had only seen the deep hedges of the garden that morning, the more decorated sections were even more stunning. Bushes of roses and fields of daffodils stretched across the plotted land, trees of many greens covered the paths with a decent amount of shade to keep them cool. All in all, the Royal Gardens were a sight that Fury was honored to have the ability to see first hoof.

“Wow, this is so beautiful. I would have never thought that something so close to the wild would be planted in the middle of this place.” Fury said, taking in the scenery.

“It truly is a sight to behold, isn't it? Our gardeners spend hours of their days maintaining this land for our personal viewing. Their work is just as valuable to this land as a maid is to a pile of laundry.” Celestia said.

Just then, Fury got an idea that made him snicker.

“What's so funny?” Cadence asked.

“I just thought of something. You guys are herbivores, right? So flowers, hay and other greens are what you eat.”

“Right… What's so funny about that?” The pink princess continued.

“If that's the case for your diets. Wouldn't that mean that a garden like this is technically an open range buffet?” Fury chuckled.

Cadence looked confused at this. “Just because we eat flowers, doesn't mean we would. They're meant for seeing, not consuming. Well, except for daffodils but that's an exception.”

“Sad. Because it would be kind of funny to see you eat one like a deer would.”

“I don't think I would be that desperate to eat these flowers.” Cadence said.

Celestia on the other hoof, looked amused at this. “It's funny you brought this up, Fury. When I was younger, l used to eat a lot of flowers until we limited most to aesthetics. They actually are kind of delectable in their own way.”

Fury chuckled. “See, Cadence, it's part of your heritage. You should eat some and not deny yourself.”

Cadence rolled her eyes. “Very funny, Fury. You can eat them later if you feel so comfortable. But right now, we have a job to find Fluttershy. So let's go.”

Fury chuckled. “Okay okay, I’ll let it go. Now where would she usually hang out?”

“She is a very secluded pony. Only the densest of shrubbery will do to make her comfortable.” Luna spoke up.

Fury nodded. “Okay, if so, to find my prey… Metaphorically, that is, we find where she would hang out. She seems to like nature and animals the most, and she is training a choir of birds so…” Fury looked around among the greens and flowers, taking a slow sweeping motion into action until he locked onto a yellow pegasus with an assortment of birds in the trees ahead of them.

He could hear a soft but soothing voice feminine voice alongside louder but no less pleasant sounding birds. He looked close to see Fluttershy rehearsing.

“Wow, I haven't seen or heard anything like this in my life. You're making some good progress so far.” Fury said.

“Eep!” Fluttershy said, shocked and hiding behind a tree.

“Whoa, whoa, don't worry. I'm not gonna eat you or anything. I'm just here as a plus one with the bride to see how you were doing.” Fury said. “And from what I can see, you did well with these birds.”

“I- I did?” Fluttershy asked, shyly but appreciating the compliment.

“Of course, it isn't every day that you can bring together an orchestra of birds like this on a whim. Seriously, I can't remember the last time I saw a Woodpecker perched anywhere remotely near a Bluejay! You've got something going here, and it is a beautiful thing at that.” Fury said with a genuine smile on his face.

Fluttershy was surprised. She hadn't even truly gotten to know this new individual and he was giving her complaints if he had known her for years. It was a rarity for her to hear that from someone outside her very tight circle of friends, but it was an appreciated effort.

“Um… thanks.” Fluttershy said.

“You must train them quite well. I guess. You probably give them some tasty treats to persuade them, huh?”

“Well, yes. Mostly bird seed and small nuts, but we still have a ways to go before we can sing ‘Here comes the bride’ at full capacity.” Fluttershy said.

“I'm sure by the time my wedding day rolls around that you'll be completely in tune. No singer can belt out a full piece without tons of rehearsals and training.” Cadence added.

“Why thank you princess. Now now, every bird, the princesses are here to see your progress. Let's give them a good show, okay?” The birds gave agreeing chirps and nods. “Okay then, from the top. And a one, two, three…”

Fury could hear the tune of a song that resembled something he heard from the radio on the train to Canterlot. But it seemed more interesting and wondrous when the song was done by trained birds. Each bird gave the perfect pitch for each beat.

From the Bluejays to the Robins, everything was a sweet tune to hear. That is until…

Skwaaak! Skwaaa!

“Uh… was that supposed to be part of the tune?” Fury asked while covering his ears.

“Oh dear.” Fluttershy said. “That wasn't a part of the number. I'll have to point out where the problem is.”

“No need, Fluttershy. I've lived in the wild long enough to know that squawking. Sounds like one of your Toucans has a bit of a sore throat.” Fury said, pointing out the colorful bird rubbing its neck in discomfort.

“Oh no, poor Sam. You sound just awful.” She said sympathetically.

“Do you need to give him some medicine?” Celestia asked.

“Just a little cough syrup should do the trick. Don't worry, I'll have that sore throat fixed up in no time.” Fluttershy said, trotting over to her saddlebags to grab some medicine.

“How did you know which bird was sore, Fury?” Cadence asked.

“We get tons of birds flying in from all over through the seasons. Snowy Owls, Toucans, Woodpeckers, even the occasional Falcon. Every bird that flew through town had its distinct call, and that sore Toucan is one I've heard a good bit.” Fury explained.

“And you can recognize each of them?” Luna asked.

“That's right. It was sort of a hobby of mine to keep me entertained on the side.” Fury said.

Fluttershy eventually found the cough syrup and walked over to Sam. “Here you go, Sam. This oughta make you feel better.”

Sam took the syrup slowly, still looking to be in distress. After it consumed it all, Fluttershy decided to pet him.

“I hope you’re feeling okay and that it wasn't too bitter.” She said sweetly.

The toucan's face seemed to mellow out after a minute.

“Since you seem well, let's see if you can sing better.” Fluttershy had the bird continue solo. Sam sounded much better and could hold notes much more easily.

“Look at that, he's got his voice back! No doubt he'll be singing beautifully by the time the big day rolls around.” Fury said excitedly.

“He sure will, he always was the best singer back at my cottage in Ponyville. Speaking of animals, I've actually wanted to get to know you a little better, Night Fury. It's been so long since I've seen you. Well, your species at least.”

Fury was surprised. “Wait, you know about Speed Shifters?”

“Of course, taking care of animals is my special talent, and knowing every single one down to the most obscure details is what I do.” Fluttershy said with a bit of pride. Fury then saw where Cadence was coming from on the way there. She really did seem to open up when it came to animals, almost as if she was a whole different pony when she got the chance.

“Well I'm a little different from say an owl.” Fury said.

“True, but every creature, sapient or not, affects the ecosystem in some way. And you're one of them.” Fluttershy said. “And speaking of which, I was wondering, what are the climate and conditions like where you come from?”

“Three words. Trees, mud, strange. I lived in a forest back home, a little village called Thunder Hollow. Your typical forest/jungle layout. Mud wallows, rivers, waterfalls, dirt paths. Just your usual heavy greenery type deal.”

Fluttershy’s eyes lit up. “I always wanted to go to the jungle. The creatures there are so colorful and even more dangerous if what I read is correct.”

“You sure did. We may be the top of our home’s food chain, but you'd better believe there are some wild animals there. Star spiders, Drillapedes… not to mention the Glyphids.” Fury moaned.

“Glyphids?” Fluttershy read about many animals with Twilight, but even that wasn't a name she believed she heard.

“Giant mutant cousins to the spider. Green blood, brown armor, tan body and masters of melee combat. They come in two stages. Swarmers, little baby crawlers with no armor but can still nab your ankles like a mangy dog. And Grunts, full grown and wearing their iconic brown, chitinous shielding to give them an edge. Though those aren't the only ones. They can get bigger, but the habitat we roam just doesn't permit that growth.” Fury explained.

“As a matter of fact…” The black Shifter took off quickly, spooking the yellow pegasus a bit before he returned with a journal.

“I have sketches of them in my journal. I may be the speedy type, but I do slow down every once and a while. Plus, I had to sketch these things for a biology class back when I was younger.” Fury said. “Now, I wouldn't call myself a genius when it comes to these bugs, but I do keep track of everything that I see in the world.”

Fluttershy and the princesses leaned in to get a look and were greatly scared, amazed and disturbed at the visual they got. 8 legs, no eyes and jagged teeth that overlap one another with gaps in-between each tooth like the worst case of snaggletooth.

“Yeesh. And I thought Manticores were scary.” Cadence said. “I guess we Equestrians are a bit spoiled in the fierce animal department.”

“Oh trust me, you let these things get too close in the dark and you can say bye bye to your limbs. They don't have eyes, but their ability to sense vibrations in the ground is almost supernatural. And the bigger ones…” Fury took a moment to brace himself.

“Those things are freaks of nature. Luckily they only exist in very deep caverns and caves below ground, so there's no chance of them getting top side unless certain, and very slim, conditions are met. But those who've been down below and came face to face with even a Praetorian… let's just say those therapy bills were stacked high.” Fury shuddered, closing the journal.

“Did you actually sketch these up close?” Celestia asked.

“Well, with the help of adults in case they spot us, but still it's not an experience you forget.” Fury shuddered.

Fluttershy however did not seem intimidated but was only enthralled at the sketches of the spider-like creatures.

“Such fascinating creatures! I never knew such bugs existed. If only I could see these up close.” Fluttershy said with a hint of jealousy.

Fury had to admit he was surprised to see the shy Fluttershy actually crave meeting such dangerous beasts. She had more than met the eyes.

“Sorry Flutters, but I don't think you ever will. Glyphids are subterranean creatures, mostly living their lives underground and away from the surface. Plus, they're aggressive to anything that disturbs them. So unless you want to plan a very extensive expedition into the depths and risk your innards becoming your out-ards, I'd suggest you stay clear.” Fury said, knowing that would surely deter her.

“Oh I would be fine with that, as long as I could see them. Well except for the uh… out-ards part, but I'm sure I can reason with them.” Fluttershy said nonchalantly. Fury's jaw dropped. At this point, he was in disbelief at just who big of a switch up he'd seen from this meek pegasus. One moment, she's getting spooked by his speech and stuttering under her breath. The next, she's acting completely unphased at meeting what's considered one of the most dangerous bugs to run into as a Speed Shifter.

“Heh heh, dang. You may not show it often, but you've got guts, Fluttershy. You don't seem phased at all with animals. And wait did you say ‘Reason with them’? Now I'm really confused.”

“Of course. You may say they're aggressive to anything that disturbs them, but who's to say it comes from nowhere? I'm certain they're just misunderstood and just want something simple.” Fluttershy said.

“Well, let's hope there's a time where you can prove that. I know I'd like to see it.” He muttered that last part. Just then, the clock in time square rang. Counting each ring, the time was near noon.

“Wow, it's only noon? It feels like it's been ages already.” Fury said.

“Sometimes, things keep you busy for so long that you lose track of how quickly or slowly you get them done. We must be making good time.” Celestia spoke.

“Speaking of which, our next stop is Rainbow Dash who is assisting the Wonderbolts with the airshow. We should get going if we want to see their practice session.”

“Wonderbolts? Airshow?” Fury asked.

Fluttershy explained. “You see, since we Pegasi can fly, many of us, like my friend Rainbow Dash, like to race and do tricks in the air. It's quite a spectacle to see! Especially from the Wonderbolts, the best hybrid Air Force/Stunt Flier squad in Equestria. Since you like going fast, I think you and Rainbow would hit it off well. She likes to race whether on land or air.”

Fury was really eager now. He always liked seeing fellow appreciators of speed. Maybe he could see just how fast she is compared to him.

“Yeah, I'd like to see her. Just to see how fast she thinks she is.” Fury said with a competitive voice. “Well, I'm off to go. It's been a pleasure talking to you about animals, Fluttershy.”

“Oh, me too. It's not everyday someone is interested in nature like you. And to give you a final farewell, my birds will give you one last song, the Cloudsdale Anthem that’s used in races as you leave, uh if that's okay with you.” Fluttershy said with her usual shyness.

“Fine by me! Just give it away!”

Fluttershy called all the birds to their places. And they sang a jubilant triumphant song. That made him feel eager and pumped up. He got in position and made a dash for where Rainbow would be.

“See ya later, Fluttershy!”

“Wait for us!” Celestia said as the alicorns flew to him.

For Fluttershy she simply smiled.

I wish you luck Rainbow Dash. You'll have quite an opponent.

Later on…

In one of the castle's many open areas, there was a group of Pegasi training with stylish blue and yellow uniforms. Some were doing sit-ups, others were doing warm-up laps, and some were even doing pushups with their wings.

“Wow, these guys mean business.” Fury said, walking past them. “I never thought you could actually exercise a wing like it was an arm.”

“To winged creatures like birds, feathers are basically like your paws.” Celestia said. “But pegasi go even further by exercising them to maximum capacity.”

“Cool!” Fury said. “And I bet one specific pegasus is doing just that getting ready for her next race.” Fury said, referring to Rainbow Dash. “So where is she?”

“I think I see her over there!” Cadence said. High up in the sky, a rainbow trail glided across the sky. No doubt that was the mare they were there to see, but she seemed to be doing something special. Not too much later, a sonic boom went off, a flurry of colors filling the sky as the shockwave blew past.

The princesses looked unsurprised but impressed. But Fury was shocked. After a few seconds Fury finally opened his mouth.

“What the heck?! Did everyone just see that?! Was that an aurora?!” Fury said with pure amazement.

“Not necessarily. That is what Rainbow Dash likes to call a ‘Sonic Rainboom’.” Celestia said. Fury's face immediately changed to a sly grin.

“Wow, she's got that much of an ego that she had to trademark it?” He chuckled.

“That’s basically Rainbow Dash in a nutshell.” Celestia said.

“You can say that again, your highness! When you’re the first to do the move, you get naming rights.” Rainbow said as she flew in from high up and skidded on the grass. “Ain't no pony gonna match me when it comes to speed.”

“I wouldn't be so quick with the self applause, newbie. You said yourself earlier that you think whiskers over here could compete.” Said an orange pegasus with a fire-like mane.

Rainbow's face changed from cocky to surprised when she saw the other mare. “Spitfire! Uh, ma'am!” She said, nervous of her idol and Commander being in front of her before composing herself. “It is true. Fury here seems to like going fast. And from what Twilight told me, speed is practically in their blood. So I wanted to test out the speed he claims to have.” Rainbow said, staring into Fury's eyes with fire.

Fury smiled. Now there was somepony speaking his language.

“Heh, alright. One lap around the gardens with everything you've got. But I've gotta warn you, I'm practically a bullet train on legs.”

“Fine by me. But I'm gonna warn you, I'm the best flier in Ponyville.” The rainbow pegasus boasted.

“Besides that though, are you good on the rough ground or are your hooves all dainty from only flying?” Fury said smugly. The rest of the Wonderbolts Ooo’d at his direct shot at the rookie.

“Alright pipsqueak, line it up!” She called out. “We’ll see how tough you really are when we race for real.”

They both set up on the path leading around the gardens, both racers stretching out their limbs for the takeoff. Spitfire took to the front to start them off.

“Alright you two, one lap around the gardens. Hooves and paws to the ground, no holding back. I expect the best from both of you.” The orange pegasus announced, raising her wings to get ready.

“On your marks…” Both racers lowered themselves down, eyes trained on the path ahead.

“Get set…” Fury charged himself up to the max, no restrictions holding him down. Time slowed for a moment before the final say, Fury's smile growing as he felt his power flow.

Say goodbye to your ego, girlie. I'm gonna make sure you know who rules down here.

“Go!” With no second thought, Fury pushed off from the line in a roar of wind. A subsonic burst knocked Spitfire over and disoriented everyone else watching.

They could barely make out the actual bodies of the contestants. They simply appeared as colored blurs all the while dust clouds enveloped the tracks.

For Fury though, his race being attuned to such high speeds, he could still make out his rainbowy opponent. He was behind her at this moment.

Fury was impressed. He didn't expect a non Shifter to give him such a challenge in the speed department.

“You doing alright back there, buddy?” Rainbow asked with a cocky overtone. “You need me to slow down for you?”

Fury simply laughed. “Don't get cocky Rainbow! I'm just getting warmed up! Watch this!”

Fury took deeper breaths and allowed more energy around him to build up and go into his muscles. He got a burst of speed that allowed him to close in.

“So, you want me to slow down for you, Dashie?” Fury said just as cocky.

“Oh, it is on!” Rainbow said. The two racers took to the track with a devilish amount of speed, almost ludicrous in nature.

The spectators looked on with awe. Cadence looked with awe at these two racers. Celestia seemed calmer but even she seemed impressed. Luna tried to be stoic but she couldn't stop her jaw from dropping.

As Night Fury and Rainbow Dash struggled to manage their steps and their speed, they both kept up a determined face.

Fury indeed felt excited but he had to admit he used up much of his power to keep up with this blue speedster. He could go even faster if he used his core powers, probably more than Dash could think of, but using that speed would wear him out for days and only be used for tough enemies.

Screw it, this is for all the marbles! It'll be worth it. Besides, I'm not going to be seen as a weakling. Not again!

Fury focused on everything he had and pushed past his limits. Hitting the final straight, he called upon all his strength and did what he had to.

“This ends now, twerp!” Fury called out, blasting a cloud of dust behind him. While the rainbow pegasus thought she was reigning in the win, Fury was running for his life. But he could feel his strength depleting, and unbenounced to him, the princesses could see it too.

“Night Fury isn't looking too good. He's pushing himself too hard and his body is suffering the consequences already.” Cadence said with some concern.

“Perhaps it was a bad idea to accept this challenge. If he knows he wouldn't be able to sustain a high speed for so long, why would he take her on?” Luna asked.

“Because having such a power is a thing Speed Shifters are very proud of. Night Fury in particular, is very engrossed in the thought that his speed is unrivaled. But now that he's found another that can match and even beat his skill, he's pushed himself to and past his limits to maintain that glory. Even at the expense of his bodily strength.” Celestia explained.

Cadence looked on with awe and surprise. She couldn't understand how any creature could justify damaging their body for glory. She would do it for those she loved but not something like winning.

Luna however seemed to be silent and somewhat understanding. Celestia could tell from her expression she empathized with Fury in this. After all, Luna always tried to prove her own worth ever since she was a filly.

Celestia spoke up nevertheless to give calm. “Don't worry though. If anything happens, the Wonderbolts’ medical crew will fix him right up. They know what grizzly accidents can happen in races after all.”

Cadence nodded, trying to show she's calm.

Luna however was simply focused on Fury's dash of speed. Let's see your true resolve, Night Fury of Thunder Hollow.

Meanwhile, for Fury, he kept on catching up with Dash, giving his full endurance. He could see Rainbow was giving her all and so was he.

“Had enough already, furball?” Rainbow asked, trying to sound cocky.

“Only if you are, Dashie! If not then this furball is going to the very limit!” He said with a cocky smirk, trying to hide his heavy breathing. But his body had enough as he closed in on the finish line. Edging just ahead of Rainbow Dash, he crossed the line in a blur. Soon after, he pulled off the trail and onto the grass. His vision was a bit blurry and his breathing was now labored as he kneeled down and collapsed into the grass in a wheezing heap.

“Fury!” He could hear Celestia and Cadence crying out.

“Everyone check his vitals!” He heard what he assumed was a medic.

Fury realized he pushed himself harder than he had in a long time. He has only experienced that level of strain a few times, but only in short bursts during training when his father's cousin was helping him work out.

While the rainbow pegasus wanted to huff and puff about losing by a hair, seeing Fury practically gasping for air was enough to get her ego to take the bench.

“Woah woah, hold on big guy! You aren't doing too hot. You okay?” She asked worriedly.

He simply looked at Dash before he saw black.

About an hour later…

When Fury opened his eyes, he felt tired but at least comfortable. He struggled to stay awake at first but when he finally did, he wondered what had just happened. Looking around, he saw white walls and bright lights. Many gloves and cabinets adorned the walls and a faint beeping sound that seemed to match that of a heartbeat pulsed in his ears.

“Where am I?” He said confused, sitting up and holding his head with one paw.

“Why, you're in the medical ward.” He heard a familiar regal voice. It was Luna. “You passed out and became incapacitated after your race.”

“Wow… I really did push myself, huh?” Fury said with a chuckle.

“You did indeed. Your vitals were very concerning when you first fell unconscious, but you eventually stabilized. It took even our best medics to keep you stable as your biology is very new to our nation.” Luna explained. Fury sighed as he heard that, catching the lunar goddess’ attention.

“Is something the matter?”

“No, I'm just frustrated that I fell short again. After so many years, I thought I could improve and show that I was different from when I first messed up. But I just left nothing but a disappointing sack of meat to be picked up off the grass. Just another reminder that I'm just as useless as I was before.” Fury lamented.

Luna looked at him sympathetically. “You might have seen it that way, but to me, I saw someone use all their will and skill to make it to the end. That I believe is something to be admired. And you actually won! Behold!” Luna said, showing him a picture of him making it past the line.

Fury was actually surprised. “I did? Huh, well I guess something good came from this.” He said, still a little tired. Just then, Celestia, Cadence, Rainbow Dash, Spitfire and one of the medics came in. The Princess of Love immediately came to him and hugged him tightly as soon as she saw he was awake.

“Oh thank goodness, you're okay! I thought something terrible just happened to you!” She said.

“I'm fine, just a little tired and all.” Fury said, returning the gesture before turning to the medic. “So doc, what's the verdict?”

“Well, your energy usage definitely put you through something, I'll say that. Your muscles were tight, lungs and heart were in overdrive and your brain was sending messages at a million miles a minute. To say bringing your heart rate down was a chaotic endeavor is an understatement. We were basically learning how you work on the inside on the fly. It was like being in medical school again in double time.” The stallion said, examining him and a clipboard he held in his hoof.

“Well, that's what being a Speed Shifter does to ya. We're a unique species alright.” Fury said.

“That you are. Now, about your overall health. Your heart and lungs are fine, despite the high intensity of your running. Muscles have relaxed and are less tight, brain signals are down to normal levels and your blood work will be done soon.”

That last part caught Fury's attention. “Wait, blood work? You took some of my blood?”

“Of course. Considering this is our first time operating on one of your kind, we went through our usual N.C.P: New Creature Protocol. It mostly involves doing some of the usual work of a doctor. Testing reflexes, heart rate, breaths taken per hour and like I said before, blood work. Mostly to get a read on any possible pre-existing diseases, disorders and anything else that would need attention.”

“Plus, it will help us get used to your DNA and inner workings, so if we ever need to give you medical attention, you'll get the best care possible. It's been a very long time since we've had to do this, the last time we did was with that dragon Celestia's student hatched during her entrance exam.” The medic admitted.

“Dragon? Uh never mind, I guess I'll find that out later.” Fury said. “Anyways, I guess if it means keeping me alive, then I'm okay to surrender my blood. Just as long as you don't use it for any… weird reasons.”

“Oh don't worry, kid. We keep all of our samples under heavy guard, so no need to worry about you getting a genetic clone anytime this life.” The medic laughed.

“Good for me. I don't need to fight myself if yesterday showed me anything.” Fury said.

“But, speaking of samples, we will need you to come in sometime tomorrow if that's okay. We'd like to run more tests and take some more samples to make sure we have your genetic makeup locked down for another… accident.”

“Sure, I'm fine with that. Mom always taught me to trust due process, and if that includes being a test subject for better treatments, I'm down.” Fury said.

“Hey kid, you pushed yourself pretty hard on that final straight. I'd have thought you'd blow a fuse.” Spitfire said.

“You can say that again, ma'am.” Rainbow said, still maintaining a recruit style attitude.

“Hey, it's all a part of growing up like me. You have to be willing to push hard to win in life, especially when you have to defend yourself from bugs and birds so big that they make you look like the prey and them, the predator.” Fury admitted, calling back to the times he'd gotten himself in a bit of trouble.

“Besides that, we are just glad you're okay. I haven't seen a creature move like you do in eons, but your health is my number one priority as a ruler of Equestria.” Celestia said with sincerity.

“Thanks Celestia, I'm glad I found a crowd that puts creatures over credibility.” Fury said with a tired voice. “I think I'll stay here and rest up for a while. I may be awake, but I still feel a bit weak.”

“I shall remain with you while you recuperate. I believe I owe you that much after our little scuffle yesterday.” Luna said, making Fury smile.

“We'll leave you to get some rest.” Cadence said, leading the group out of the room.

“Get better soon, bud. And good race, by the way.” Rainbow Dash said as they left.

“Right back at you, pal.” Fury said, looking at the ceiling. Even if he did pass out, he felt better than ever like he could trust these people.
