Sunburst sighed to himself as he heard the muffled crack-pop of what must be yet another sparkling, colourful barrage of summertime merriment in the distance. The Summer Sun Celebration might have been the shortest night of the year, but it did its damndest to make up for it by being the loudest. Especially in Canterlot.
It wasn’t that Sunburst didn’t like the holiday. Although he rarely got invited to attend with someone, the festivities were open to all, and the yearly celebration had for years been one of the few much-needed reprieves from his endless cycle of in-depth study, and failed application. If anything, it was disappointing that rather than joining the festivities under the moonlight, he was instead descending into the dark on these poorly-kept stairs in one of the less-visited wings of the School for Gifted Unicorns.

He shook his head, ridding his spectacled vision of his ever-frazzled vermillion mane. Tonight, he had more important things to do. His hooves found the bottom of the staircase, and he looked at the rough-cut stone that was so different from the normal tiles used in the school. The door in front of him had never been locked when he first found it, so he figured it must have been allowed for a student to come down here. For him to enter the labyrinthine under-tunnels that ran beneath Canterlot.
The first time he’d descended into the dark, subterranean passages, he’d been terrified. Only his intellectual curiosity had spurred him on. Now, having made this curious trip many times, the novelty had long since been lost. The ancient unicorns who had cut these passages did so in an orderly, measured manner in their hunt for crystals for ornamentation and spellcraft. All one had to do was recognise the pattern.
Sunburst was good with patterns.
His interest in the tunnels wasn’t chiefly historical, however. In his studies, he had uncovered any number of curiosities the once-users and denizens of this network had left. Most were merely interesting, but the one he was making for now had real applications. Especially tonight.
He paused as the path suddenly widened into a pony-made cavern. It had a domed ceiling perfectly carved from the crystalline walls surrounding them, and no entrance but the path he came along. One less studied on the history of the unicorns who had lived here generations ago could easily dismiss the space as an unimportant room, one inconsequential dead-end among many. Sunburst knew the place for what it was. Although the smooth walls and ceiling were no long polished to a reflective sheen as they once would have been, the structure still functioned: it was a resonance chamber, meant for trapping and amplifying magic cast within.
He had set up his materials in advance of the Summer Sun Celebration and was glad to see they hadn’t been disturbed. The intricate geometric patterns he’d painstakingly marked out on the floor with magically infused charcoal was still in place to the line, circle, and rune. It had taken him a month to memorize the formations so he could mark them out without mistakenly disturbing one line with another. Then it had taken another two to figure out how to plausibly modify it to his needs. His changes to the arcane circle should feed additional power to its aim: reaching through to the next plane and pulling from it a being not native to this world. Normally that change would destabilize the formation, but that was where the resonating chamber came in. He knew the ancient unicorn architecture would keep it stable.
Theoretically, anyway.
He tried not to let that familiar doubt take root as he took the time to light the four candles marking the cardinal directions at the corners of the summoning circle. The thought that unicorns generations upon generations ago had performed this exact step hundreds if not thousands of times in this chamber gave him a strange sense of peace.
With the candles lit, though, came the final and most difficult step. His horn shimmered with golden magic as he began to channel it into the carefully arranged array. The magically infused geometry and runes began to glow in that same colour as they absorbed it like a reservoir. Normally, it would take much more time and effort, possibly necessitating a group of unicorns working in tandem.
The final aspect of his thoroughly-studied plan came in here. It was widely understood that during the summer solstice, their world would be at its closest to the neighbouring plane. With enough magic, one could reach deep and far in search of a being to conjure into the world. Again, theoretically, this should mean it would require less magic to reach into shallower depths. All he needed to prove the efficacy of his theory, of his formation, and the importance of the ancient unicorn chamber it was arrayed in was to grasp even a lesser spirit and draw it into this world. That would be enough to garner the attention of at least an advanced institution. Perhaps it would even garner the attention of a patron in Canterlot with a special interest in summoning magic!
Then, all his restless nights of studies would be worth it.
The faith of his mother would not be misplaced, and she could stop bothering him about his direction in life now that he was a stallion.
He gave a small gasp as the arcane circle reached maximum charge, glimmering momentarily, beautifully sunlight-yellow, filling the room with its glow. Surely, this beat out any of the fireworks that would have been on display in the city streets.
He focused his magic towards the center, finding a sensation like resistance. Then, he pushed, focusing narrower and narrower, and those innermost runes seemed to fold around the distorting space, at once empowering and stabilizing the growing opening between worlds.
“Agh!” Sunburst shouted as, with a crash and pop, a sun-bright flash filled the chamber for a split second. Had he failed after everything? After so much effort and so many lonely nights squinting at old texts in the dark? Even as his vision began to clear, it was already blurring again, the too-familiar hot sting of tears starting at the edge of his vision.
And yet, there was something at the center of his carefully crafted spell. A dark and solid shape, so it couldn’t be a wisp… Could it be an imp? But it seemed too large. Yet, it was so much smaller than the next most common monstrosity he might have snared in his spell.
As his vision finally resolved into the relative clearness his glasses afforded, Sunburst gawked at the silhouette standing in the madly flickering candlelight. It was of equine cast, with four legs and roughly the same proportions as a pony, but the similarities ended there, leaving the likeness uncanny rather than relieving. It had no coat, but instead a smooth black carapace, largely featureless except for a few segments around the midsection and neck. Each of its hooves was marred by irregular holes, and its ears were tattered where they stood off of its head. A pair of leathery wings, bat or dragon-like, flowed from its back, shimmering with an insectoid iridescence, while a pair of horns rose in elegant curves from its head. Its heart-shaped tail flicked as his eyes traced its slender length, only for him to raise his eyes and realise with a jump that its luminous purple eyes were studying him in return.
“For what have you summoned me, mortal?” she asked--as the creature’s voice left Sunburst little doubt that it was a she--with a silken confidence that suggested she already knew the answer. Sunburst found himself wishing he did, as well. He swallowed hard and immediately regretted it, as the creature flashed a smile full of brilliantly white fangs.
“I… That is… You’re…” Sunburst drew a deep breath and adjusted his glasses, as he often did in an attempt to clear his mind as well as his vision. He searched through the vast catalogue of knowledge he’d accrued in his time at the School for Gifted Unicorns. Far from the lesser spirit he’d attempted to conjure, what stood before him now appeared to be every bit as intelligent as a pony, and was aware of her circumstance. Sleek and predatory. The dark, feminine cast of its form. The way it waited and smiled, exuding hunger and lust. “... a succubus.”
She seemed puzzled by this reaction, and that terrible smile faltered for a moment as she glanced at the array of geometric runes surrounding her. When she looked back up at him, though, the vicious grin was restored. Perhaps it was intended to be comforting, though, considering the patient tone with which she answered, “Precisely so, conjurer. Was it not you who summoned me?”
“Well, yes, but…” Sunburst trailed off, his mind racing. This should be impossible. Or at least extremely improbable. A succubus hadn’t been called up in Equestria for more than a millennia, and the last time one had, it had led to the fall of the western reaches of the kingdom, and the birth of the Changeling swarm. Anxiety coiled around his throat, and he couldn’t help but glance towards the creature, and then away again at her expectant look. This was terrible! She was catastrophically dangerous, and it was his fault she was here.
But what magical knowledge could be gleaned from a being so ancient and terrible, to say nothing of what it could mean for his career? Forget being picked up as a teacher for a magic school, with this kind of notoriety he could head his own magic school. Maybe his mother would even stop bothering him about finding a girlfriend. So far, the changeling-like creature had been docile, if not friendly, and if nothing else the runes of binding and sealing around her could contain her.
“Yes! It was I who summoned you,” he suddenly announced, with as much pomposity as he could summon. The succubus looked at him and an awkward beat passed, and he was left to wonder just how long he’d been lost in his own thoughts. He cleared his throat and pushed up his glasses, before lifting a hoof to run over the fine red-orange hairs on his chin, as he imagined the great wizards of the past must have. What was next? Right, an important step in communing with and exercising power over otherworldly beings of all types: “What is your name, erm, succubus?”
“Acrasia,” she replied, matter-of-factly. Sunburst was stunned for a moment by how easily and quickly she answered.
“Uh, er, really? Don’t I need to press you for it, or something? Maybe answer a riddle?” He blinked, and she blinked back. “I mean, that’s what I needed to do with all the… Other beings I’ve summoned.”
“So I see,” she answered, and she gave him another one of those terrifying, reassuring smiles that so nicely emphasized the points of her teeth. “I have long grown weary of such trite theatrics. No, I would sooner not waste more of my, and your, precious time. We both know well why you have summoned me, oh conjurer.” The hunger in those bright, intensely purple eyes made his coat crawl and his face heat up. They wandered over him like so fine a meal, leering at his orange and white coat stretched over his self-admittedly scrawny frame as if he were the only stallion in the world. He knew at once what she meant.
“Uh… Haha, actually, you see… I was hoping I could just ask you some questions? That is, I’m…” Sunburst’s mind fumbled momentarily as he watched Acrasia’s tongue run across the smooth dark lines of her lips. It was forked, and luminescent in a shade of purple a touch darker than her eyes. “... I’m interested only in… expanding my knowledge of the arcane.”
“Really?” It was the succubus’s turn to be surprised by this breach of cliche. All the same, after a moment’s thought, she continued on in as silky a voice as ever, “Very well, oh studious disciple of the arcane. I will share with you my knowledge.”
Despite the slight trembling in his legs, Sunburst smiled. Acrasia continued, “But, certainly a summoner of... your talents must know that to sustain a conjuration, a degree of energy must be expended to ground the summon?” She noticed Sunburst’s eyes flicking towards the arcane circle around her feet, and cut in before he could say anything. “The arcane energy expended in the summoning may be enough to sustain a mere wisp or imp for some time, but for one such as I? It might keep me for an hour at most.”
“Right,” Sunburst sighed. He certainly hadn’t been prepared for this possibility, and fell into a sullen silence as he realised this, his greatest magical accomplishment--and indeed among the greatest magical accomplishments in Equestria for the past few hundred years--may fizzle out like a weak flame.
The unicorn once more flipped through the deep encyclopedia that was his mind for an answer, but one was quickly presented in smooth, sultry tones. “It would be so easy a thing, clever magician. I merely need from you the sustenance my kind craves, that we need…”
“Oh. You mean…” the young stallion cleared his throat, his ears burning, and he looked at his hooves lest he look into that voracious purple gaze.
“Do you find my appearance so displeasing?” The disappointment in Acrasia’s voice forced him to look at her.
“What? No, no, I…” His eyes roamed her form momentarily. She was strange, monstrous even, but to call her displeasing also didn’t do. He tracked the slender, feminine flow of her body, thin at the middle before flaring dramatically out into wide, full hips which in turn fed into the shapely buttocks he could only see a hint of given her current stance. Her face, too, was unworldly but undeniably pretty--no, beautiful, with a slender muzzle and deep black lips that made her perfectly white teeth show that much more vividly. “I’ve… Just never… You know…”
“Is that all?” Acrasia answered almost too quickly, and too kindly.

“Would it please you for me to change my form?” The creature leaned a bit closer, those large eyes lidding, just-so. “Tell me about a mare you like. Or, a stallion?”
It took him a bit of searching to settle on the answer to that. His struggling studies had left him little time to get to know his fellow students. But there was one, who always seemed to go out of her way to talk a moment to talk to him when she passed, and who invited him to events and parties no matter how many times he’d turned her down. Sometimes when he was lonely and aroused, he would remember her smiling face.
He started to describe her slowly, although he struggled to maintain his description as Acrasia changed shape bit by bit. Smooth chitin turned a creamy white before the coat grew out. She blinked and her eyes showed like a pony’s in glimmering turquoise. Her mane grew as hair filled out her tail, both curly and pink. The cutie mark she now bore showed a trio of blue stars.
The likeness she bore to Twinkleshine was incredible given the vagueness of his description, albeit with the goddess-like body of a succubus and pair of black horns arching above her head. She gave him a pretty smile. Without the shock of those predatory fangs, his heart raced for different reasons, and pulsed harder in different regions.
"This is better?" the succubus slowly asked with a swish of her new tail, and he nodded. "Good. Now come closer, into the circle, and let’s get comfortable, shall we?"
"Into the circle?" Sunburst echoed, and he gave the ring of arcane symbols a glance. He knew it was dangerous to cross the magical boundary that sealed a conjured entity, yet the succubus had been nothing but amiable so far, and with the face of his schoolboy crush, she only seemed all the less intimidating. She had more to lose than gain by lashing out at this point, having already given her name, and he could always call on the safety spells to bind and then banish her.
He stepped nearer, to Acrasia’s clear pleasure, his hoof-falls loud in the still underground chamber. Sunburst paused as he neared her, and began to say, “Alright. Now wh--” before he was abruptly cut off by the taste and heat of Twinkleshine’s--no, Acrasia’s lips on his own. He gasped at the suddenness and aggression of the act. She smelled sweet. Not like a flower or a pastry, but something much more intangible and alluring. He would have to note that in his study.
Any intellectual thoughts were suddenly derailed as he felt his balance suddenly stolen, a flash of magic from the succubus’s horns suddenly lifting and shoving him onto his back. Terror suddenly gripped him as he was rendered into as vulnerable a position as a pony was likely to find themself, his body tensing and trembling as his own conjuration bore down on him. Was it not you who entered this compact of your own will, seeking power? How fickle you are, mortal, to try to cast me out now, your pleasure taken.”
“No, I… I didn’t mean… You were…” Sunburst's lips tried to offer all of the possible excuses his brain could conjure at once.
“Cease your babbling.” She pressed down on his chest, pushing him roughly against the floor. “You are fortunate, my foolish morsel, that I am in a gracious mood, owing to your previous offerings… And the potential I have seen therein.
