Prohibition of liquor was the law of the land in Equestria. But thanks to loopholes and ponies simply breaking the law, liquor had become dangerous in more ways than one.

After the end of the Industrial Revolution and the beginning of the Roaring Markets, perspectives were changing in Equestria.

Alcohol, produced for thousands of years prior without issue, had long drawn ire from married mares and family stallions who decried the damage booze was doing to their fellow ponies. Facing enormous public and political pressure, Princess Celestia signed prohibition into law, sending her nation down an uncertain path. When the economic collapse hit, things only got worse.

Wrapped up in all this, two wise guys employed by the mob to push booze to illicit buyers had to face down a night neither would ever forget.
