A slow awakening as pale, golden light filtered in from the bedroom window and down onto her weary features. The tendrils of the dawn had crept in from the outside world to find her, see to her rising from a comfortable and dreamless sleep. And as it had been for too long now, she awoke to find the other side of her bed empty. Cold. Devoid of life.
It still felt so unnatural.
Cloudy Quartz reached out a hand to the empty half of the bed she never had used, almost in enough of a dream state to make herself believe that she would feel residual body heat from one who had just left, not the soft coldness of untouched bedsheets. But the more her mind demanded that she awaken, the more the unrelenting pang of reality made her recall that she was a widower. There was never to be another on that side of the bed again.
How wrong does it feel to be halved like this.
It hadn’t been anyone’s fault; no one could have seen it coming, not even the man himself who suffered it. A heart attack that violent would have required an instant reaction from people far more versed in the medical field than she or her daughters, but the best they could offer him was a final journey back into the house, and a peaceful few minutes on the couch before finally passing. She wanted to feel guilty, feel like she should have done something more- but Cloudy was not one to be fooled by wily emotions like grief. She had done everything she could, and had been there in her husband’s final moments. It was only the sorrow that their farewell from this world had not been a united thing many years down the road that still haunted her.
That, and this farmstead that so often now was empty save for herself.
Truth be told, that was a great deal her own fault. After Igneous’ passing, Cloudy had despaired all the more deeply at the sight of her daughters seeming so aimless after their father’s passing. Limestone spent more time than normal in a temper, needing to be away from others. Sweet little Marble had begun to speak so rarely that what words slipped past her lips were barely audible and hoarse. Even Maud had begun to show signs of emotion, real verve in her speech. The loss of their father so suddenly, so unexpectedly… of course it had affected the girls. So Cloudy had suggested they take time away, be anywhere else but the epicenter of their sorrow. And to her great surprise, all three of them had agreed to heed her words. Marble and Limestone had decided to travel across the country, visiting whichever place tickled their fancy whenever they pleased; the last word she had received from them was a postcard from Vanhoover, and that had been six months ago. Maud had volunteered for a geological research team that would be globetrotting for the next year.
All in all, the farmstead was rather quiet now. Perhaps that was for the best; Cloudy’s first month of solitude had been a fruitful one, even if it had been incredibly upsetting. Speaking to the ghosts in her walls, the nightmares of her past returning to life- not at all pleasant, but necessary. The conversations had been painfully illuminating, allowing the year’s worth of grief she’d been bearing to finally dissipate rather than linger upon her bones like weight. Her weight had begun to stabilize rather than continuously drop- the third month had even seen her gain back a few healthy pounds. The silence had become comfortable rather than something lonesome; her thoughts could be heard even if the wind blew.
Now, however… six months of living alone after years spent in a house filled with kindred had become a little lonesome. Closer to two years of being a widow than ever before, Cloudy found herself yearning for more companionship than what her isolated world afforded her. A neighbor checked in from time to time, friendly gestures to see how things were; welcome pleasantries, but not quite enough to stem the tide. Solitude was becoming too much of a norm for her tastes. Try as she might, the once demure and reclusive Cloudy Quartz was discovering she wished to have some company. Perhaps the many years beside her husband, raising the gaggle of girls she called her children, had changed something in her.
It is not good for man to be alone, Cloudy thought, and the same must go for women, too.
The day began as so many others had: with work. And being the sole pair of hands left on the stead, that meant Cloudy had plenty for her to accomplish.
Breakfast came first: a few eggs and some slices of bacon were all she needed- her stomach had never been very large. And then came the arduous tasks of seeing to whatever wear and tear the house was finding itself in the midst of; broken springs in the mattress, one of the legs on the chair needed mending, the couch cushions needed new feathers to help see it fluffed the washtub was filthy and required a thorough cleaning, clothes needed to be washed…
By the time Cloudy was done with work in the interior of the house, the sun was well on its way to being high in the sky. And so much still needed to be done across the whole of the farm. She needed to check their yield in the eastern fields, sort through last week’s trove that still awaited her judgment in the barn, setting the northern fields to be ready for tilling… it would be a miracle if she kept up at this point. Her daughters returning to the nest would be welcome, just so she could begin to keep this place at a steady pace rather than continuously declining.
“It will get done, in time,” Cloudy said to herself, wiping sweat and grime from her brow, doing her best to survey her home and not feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume what required her care. “The girls will come home again someday, and things…”
They would never be quite normal. But they would become something she could find comfort in. Eventually.
Cloudy’s thoughts had absorbed her; taken her focus away from the world about her that it was a time before she realized something was amiss. A silhouette on the horizon that had not been there before now drew her attentions, the aging farmwoman peering out at who –or what- now came to her home. Had Mrs. Jergens decided to pay another visit?
It certainly doesn’t look like her; too swift in pace, and no limp, Cloudy determined. Limestone or Marble? No, only one person was visible. Maud? Not tall enough. Just who was…
The sound of a bright, endlessly cheery voice echoed across the vast expanse of dry earth that the aged matriarch knew as home, its familiar peal a sweet sound in her ear- and enough to trigger recognition. Now the silhouette she saw coming towards her bore marks of the familiar. What came towards her was a sight she had not seen since the days following her husband’s funeral, and was perhaps the most welcome sight she’d had in many, many months. What came racing towards her was not ill news or a doting voice, but a vivacious thing so full of life that this empty and tranquil farmstead had never been enough to contain an ounce of it.
The strange prodigal daughter, the oddball, the most joyful and bright that the whole of the Pie family had ever known, was making her way down the farm’s main road and right towards her in a hurry, shouting loud and proud strong words of friendly greeting.
“But… what on earth is Pinkie doing here?” Cloudy couldn’t help but wonder.
If she was supposed to have time to process the matter, Cloudy wasn’t allowed it. What would have taken the average person several minutes to traverse only took Pinkie a spare few seconds, she barreling towards her mother with such an enthusiasm that the dust trails behind her looked like they would reach the clouds in the sky above. There was pink- so much pink, so much color, and suddenly so much person!
“Hiiiiii, Mom!” The cry was enough to rupture unfamiliar eardrums, Cloudy feeling arms wrap about her and see her lifted well off the ground- and more than a few feet away from where she’d been standing. If she hadn’t grown up being well used to such enthusiasm, Pinkie’s wild happiness might have actually caused her quite a fright. But after so many months of solitude, and even more time without the desperate feeling of physical affection, this ferocious outpouring of physical affection was better than anything she’d felt in years. Pinkie’s hugs were a force of nature, impossible to ignore and unrelenting in their fierceness; one could not escape the sensations they brought. But they also brought warmth, the tenderness of genuine love. And Cloudy was more than vulnerable enough to overlook all deficiencies in favor of such a wondrous outpouring.
“Hello, Pinkie!” Cloudy said- or perhaps more accurately wheezed, considering what pressure her daughter’s arms had put upon her lungs. The smile came unbidden, instinctive; Pinkie’s happiness was physically infectious. “Goodness gracious, I didn’t expect to see you at all! I didn’t even know you were visiting!”
“That’s cause it was a surprise, Mom! I didn’t even tell Maud or Limestone or Marble that I was coming!” As the older matriarch was settled back on her feet, Pinkie came into fuller focus: a frizzy-haired, bright-eyed woman with an infectious smile that could make even the gloomiest of hearts want to radiate happiness. Dressed in her usual frilly pink dress that fell to just beyond her knees, the young woman was a bombast of color and life that was a bit dazzling to the eyes. Buxom, a little more plush every time she saw her, her wild child was a sight for sore eyes and a delight to the lonesome mother that was glad to play host once again.
“Well, you certainly have me very happy to see you!” Cloudy said, arms about her daughter’s waist and eagerly returning that wide smile with a smaller, but just as genuine, one of her own. “It is a delight to see you, Pinkie.”
“And I’m so glad to see you, too, Mom! You look hot! Like, wow-” Pinkie grinned, but paused as she took in the surroundings of her old home. “Hey, where is everyone? I know Maud said she and the others had been away- is nobody back yet?”
“Not… no, dear, it’s just me here right now,” Cloudy admitted. She knew there wasn’t an ounce of cruel judgment in her daughter, but Pinkie’s examination of the family homestead wasn’t exactly pleasant to witness. Igneous had done such a good job of maintaining the place, and now that it was only Cloudy… “I’m running a bit behind on things today.”
“Well, goodness, why didn’t ya say so?” With a heave, Pinkie tossed her bags towards the farmhouse with the accuracy even a shot-putter would envy-
There came to their ears the sound of glass shattering. Cloudy winced.
“I’ll fix that, I promise-”
Crash. Shatter. Tinkle.
… Silence at last.
Pinkie dared to release the breath stored in her lungs. “Sorry.”
If she’d been younger –both of them, really- then Cloudy might have found reason for anger. But instead, she could only give a sigh and let a chuckle escape across her lips. “There are far more important things to worry about,” she said. “It is good to see you, Pinkie.”
“Good to see you too, Mom,” Pinkie said, and she graced her mother’s cheek with a kiss. “Can I help out with chores?”
“I’d be delighted if you would.”
The evening was wonderful. Cloudy was in the best mood she’d had in far too long, her period of solitude coming to an end now that her most vivacious daughter was back in her midst. Absence had made her heart grow fonder, assuring that Pinkie’s presence was all the more wonderful than ever before. She seemed more grown up than before, more mature and caring… Cloudy knew not why she thought such things, but delighted that she did all the same. Her brightest, liveliest child was here and ensuring that her sorrows were held at bay.
It was a better reunion than their last; Cloudy was glad to see her, especially when this visit had come about so unexpectedly. Pinkie had not been summoned here to mourn, or even been summoned at all; of her own accord, her own desires, she now sat nestled next to her mother on the freshly-repaired couch, a mug of tea in hand and happily chatting away. The feeling of her being so close and so cheerful was warmth in the older woman’s soul.
“But what would ever possess you to come all this way?” Cloudy inquired. “After all, you do live quite a long way from home.”
“I was thinking about you a lot, Mom,” Pinkie said. “And I hated the thought of you feeling lonely and sad, so I decided I needed to come and spend a lot of quality time with you! Isn’t that fun?”
“It is! Very much so, sweetheart,” the dark-haired woman said. Truth be told, it was more pleasant to have her than usual. Pinkie seemed more delightful to her eyes than she ever had before, more lovely and welcome; her body heat was comfortable as a blanket on a cold night, her smile like the first rays of sunshine. Enough to tickle one’s heart, really. “I am very glad to see you.”
“And I’m glad to be with you, Mom,” Pinkie said, offering another kiss of the cheek- not even the second of its kind, and likely not the last; her wild child seemed determined to be more physically affectionate than usual. “It feels great to be with you! And you look great, too!”
Perhaps a bit of a strange thing to say. “I look… great?”
Pinkie beamed. “Yeah! Like you’ve been taking care of yourself again, so you’re back to looking super yummy and sexy!”
Cloudy felt her face flush; it wasn’t an unpleasant compliment, but to hear her own daughter describe her in such a way was…
Is it bad? It doesn’t feel like it. But it does feel rather different, Cloudy eventually surmised. “Thank you very much, Pinkie. You look- erm, quite nice- yourself.” She at least meant it: her lively daughter had never quite been what was considered conventionally attractive, possessing a few extra pounds and no hourglass figure that turned heads. But her chest was a luxurious thing, her bottom was easily noticeable and drew attention with every stride she took, and her facial features were lovely even if the frizzy hair was not suited to one’s tastes. The smile was always there, ready to be summoned even when it appeared not on her lips; the joy Pinkie so naturally exuded could never fully be extinquished, her eyes always aglow and ready to shine forth her happiness. Goodness, perhaps that was the most delightfully attractive thing about her! That Pinkie was just so joyful all the time, always eager to celebrate and be happy. An infectious, radiant happiness that so easily swayed you into joining in. Made you want to love her, and feel her love in return…
And then Cloudy realized just to what ends she’d let her mind wander. Good heavens, thinking about her own daughter in such a manner! The very idea, especially for a widow! Had she let her whole world truly go topsy-turvy in these few months of seclusion? Surely some time on her own hadn’t warped her need for human contact this badly. Yes, it felt perfectly comfortable and natural to think of Pinkie with desire, but that didn’t mean she shoul-
No, for the love mercy! Stop that, now! Halfway through trying to control her thoughts, she’d somehow returned right back to where she’d started. How completely ridiculous.
“You OK, Mom? You’ve been quiet for kind of a while.”
So it was to be the worst-case scenario. Cloudy knew her face was flush, but hopefully not for guessable reasons; a couple of coughs to help recenter her mind, then she turned focus back to her living daughter before her- and definitely not the imaginations that wanted to be prioritized. “Forgive me, Pinkie,” Cloudy murmured. “Your dear old mother has been… distracted lately. You understand.”
“Of course I do, Mom,” Pinkie said sweetly, a hand clutching her mother’s right wrist and giving it a small squeeze. Those bright eyes glowed not just with happiness now, but also with sorrow and tears. “That’s why I wanted to be out here with you for a little while. I think you really needed company, and I wanted that company to be me. Is that OK?”
“Without a doubt, sweetheart,” the aging matriarch answered, glad to see her young daughter beam. “I will always be glad to spend time with you.”
“Aww, that’s way too sweet, Mom!” Pinkie said, and she took Cloudy into a hug that very nearly was back-breaking. She’d always been like this, affectionate to the point of almost being painful. But the isolation had taken its toll, and even one of Pinkie’s super-hugs was a welcome token of physical comfort. “I love you so much, you’re seriously amazing! It’s so great to spend time with you like this, just you and me. I feel like we never really got the chance even when I was a kid!”
Cloudy softly chuckled. “You were always heading this way and that, like a little firecracker. I could hardly have even tried to keep you to myself for a minute. You were too busy being kind to everyone all at once. I’m amazed you never wore yourself out- that you don’t wear yourself out now.”
“Well… I do have a bunch of good friends to help me with things like that,” Pinkie admitted. “Even if they’ve been a little busy with other things here and there. When we have the time, it’s always great fun to go do something nice for someone else. To see someone’s frown turned upside-down!”
Cloudy let her sweet daughter carry on for a time, glad to hear stories of kindness and adventure recalled for her listening ears to hear. Pinkie continued to do so much for others, always prioritizing the other person so that they might be made just as joyful as she was. It was almost as if that were all she did: think of others, put others first, love others more than herself. Even now, Pinkie was doing what she could to help keep her tired and lonely mother in good spirits, being a loving companion by providing the comfort of presence. Even a few compliments upon her mother’s physical beauty as well! As though she were trying to be a good spouse rather than just a physical manifestation of a pick-me-up. It was the greatest kindness Cloudy had felt in many a long day.
But like any mother… “Pinkie, you’re not- overworking yourself, are you?” Cloudy couldn’t help the fretting even if she consciously tried to stop it. “You know I would hate to see you exhausted. Or… or not taking care of yourself properly. I know you do so love to make others happy, but I sometimes worry you’re not making yourself happy, too.”
Pinkie gave a start- and then beamed. “Oh, don’t worry, Mom! I’m always able to do what makes me happy, too!” She declared. “Even if it is a little different sometimes, I always know how to have a good time. Like right now- I get to spend time with my super-sexy mommy!”
So perhaps that is not the most normal of comments, Cloudy surmised, even if she was unable to keep the blush and smile from her face in the aftermath of it. Pinkie was being awfully doting upon her, and very complimentary. It was as though there was an air of romance in the atmosphere, giving a sultry edge to their words and gestures. Even now, Pinkie was just the smallest distance away, electricity coursing from one physical form to the other in the miniscule space between. And those bright eyes of hers were gleaming with… something very likeable. Desirable.
“Hey, Mom, I had an idea!” Pinkie said suddenly, startling her mother from what reverie had taken her. “How about I make us breakfast in the morning, huh? One of those super-special Pinkie Pie Breakfasts that always put someone in a good mood? And I’ll even make sure everything is just right- so coffee just the way you like it, tasty pancakes, I’ll even make sure to look super sexy with only my secret apron on and everything! And when we’re done with breakfast, we can make a cake together! Doesn’t that sound exciting?”
“It certainly does, Pinkie, dear. I’d be delighted if you made me breakf-” Only a small portion of her daughter’s words had actually filtered their way through her brain before Cloudy realized what she’d agreed to. Having breakfast made was one thing, but then there was the thought of her vivacious child walking around the kitchen with only an apron for clothing, revealing all of her delicious body for the world to see. But not for the world to see, only for her to see, to relish in, to enjoy… and maybe even-
Wait! The actual reality of what that meant now came crashing down on her and Cloudy tried to backtrack before she had to awaken into a truly wild morning scenario. “Pinkie, perhaps such a thing wouldn’t be appropriate-”
“Aww, thanks so much, Mom!” Pinkie said, and she made sure to grant a pair of kisses to each of her mother’s cheeks. “I’m gonna go clean up and get ready for bed, OK? You should get some rest, too, because we’re going to have a super exciting and fun day tomorrow! I love you so much, goodnight!”
And before Cloudy could manage any further into her objections, that wild bombast of color was gone and out of sight, ensuring that any word spoken after could not reach ears to hear.
She could still feel where her daughter’s lips had lingered upon her face, a lasting impression that brought upon a potent heat in… places. “What did- I just agree to?” Cloudy managed to stammer. She didn’t fully know just yet, but she had an inkling of what was to come- and wasn’t even quite sure if she even wanted to dislike it.
A later morning was what roused Cloudy from her slumber. So attuned to a specific hour of the dawn was her mind that it took only a few breaths of separation from her dreams that she could look about her chambers and realize it was not sunrise. In fact, it seemed a little more like late morning; had her night’s conversation with Pinkie been that exhausting to her?
The thought made her weary mind chuckle. I must really be getting old if late night talks with my daughter wear me out, she mused ruefully.
But the more she awoke, the more her memory returned. Of what she’d felt like after Pinkie had gone to bed, ensuring that her mind as given time to properly soak in a pool of muddled thoughts. Had that been intentional? Cloudy had struggled to see herself settled in bed, a mind still awake even when the body had been weary. Flesh had still tingled from where Pinkie had kissed her cheeks, and even now it made her heart move about in ways she wasn’t quite sure she wanted to name. And then, when sleep had finally managed to lay its claim upon her and see the tired form rest, the dreams had come…
Cloudy felt the muscles in her face twitch. No, she wasn’t going to smile. She couldn’t. Not when she was remembering dreams about… about things like that! And with whom!
Perhaps you’re just feeling a bit strange from being alone for so long, the spectacled matriarch told herself. It’s been a while since you had any real company, and Pinkie is so lovely. You’re just a bit out of balance since she’s quite attractive.
It seemed like a reasonable argument until she realized what she’d just thought. Cloudy could only groan and finally go about preparing for her day; there was a lot to do today, and she would need all of her strength to see it done. Even with Pinkie’s excessive energy, it would likely be another long day, and now she would have to play catch-up because of her late awakening. Putting a robe over her nightgown, Cloudy left her sunlit bedroom behind and made her way down to the kitchen where light shone forth-
The sound of clattering, Pinkie already hard at work making breakfast, a cheerful tune streaming from her in a pleasant hum. When she heard the footsteps of her mother creeping closer, from her tasks did she turn so as to greet Cloudy with a dazzling smile. “Gooood morning, Mom! You look super-duper pretty! I’m almost done making pancakes, but there’s coffee on the percolator if you want any!”
For a moment, Cloudy didn’t register much of anything amiss. But only for half a second, for what she was now witnessing was a bit too unbelievable for her still-sleepy mind to properly take in. The gasp was genuine. “Pinkie Pie!”
Pinkie’s grin faltered. “Something wrong, Mom?”
“Look at what you’re wear- you’re indecent!” The statement might have been too mild a one, all things considered: Pinkie’s extremely thicc figure was adorned only in a rather skimpy apron, barely wide enough to cover her bare breasts from view, and thin enough to ensure her nipples were evident beneath- and upon the apron itself were the words ‘Kiss the Cook.’
Another jaw-dropper. ‘Kiss’ would have actually been more decent than what the apron recommended you bestow upon the cook. “Come on, Mom! I promised I’d make you breakfast!” Pinkie was upon her mother, latching herself to Cloudy’s arm and giving a squeeze. “Now won’t you let your yummy daughter make you a really tasty breakfast? You’ll feel so much better, I know it! And then we can relax all morning, and maybe after we can bake a cake! Doesn’t that sound like fun?”
Oh heavens, that is her breast pushing into my arm! “Pinkie… perhaps I am a bit unfamiliar with how you like to enjoy your mornings now-”
“No, Mom, this is just for you! I wanted to do something extra-special for you, so I really hope you let me. Please, please, pretty please?” She came to stand before the matriarch, bending down so that she might look up into those dark eyes and make them witness the full force of her pleading. She felt a heat in her face. And across her whole body, if she were to be honest. Cloudy wanted to look away and do something else, but she… well, she had promised. And despite how much she wished to flee right now and deal with –things- she had always impressed upon her children the importance of keeping one’s promises. So if Pinkie was this intent on fulfilling her word, then what other choice did she have?
“I… suppose it wouldn’t be too bad,” Cloudy said, and she gave an uncertain smile. “If you’d really like to make breakfast for your dear old mother that badly…”
Pinkie gave a cheer and brought her mother into a brilliant hug, apron nearly falling off entirely from her form. “Oh, thank you, Mom! Feel free to look at me as much as you want, I don’t mind! Go grab yourself some coffee, OK? I’ll be done with the pancakes in just a minute- ooh, and then I’ll throw on a few slices of bacon, too!”
The sweethearted baker was true to her word and then some, Cloudy given a proper pampering the likes of which she hadn’t felt in ages. The pancakes were perfectly done, a pristine fluffiness and sweetness that seemed to melt in her mouth- and just a hint of something else within, almost as if the batter had been soaking in an additional flavor overnight. The coffee was rich and dark, just to the texture and flavor she preferred, the bacon so exquisitely cooked. It was as though Pinkie were trying to woo her, see her heart romanced via the happiness of her stomach. But more than a meal, the frizzy beauty brought company; comfort of voice and presence and touch meant to soothe the loneliness of a sorrowed spirit. Cloudy tried to feel uncomfortable as she spoke with her –mostly- naked daughter, but it was difficult to feel terribly perturbed the longer it went on. What motives Pinkie had, Cloudy couldn’t quite say; there was a romanticism to her actions. Which was strange, considering their blood relation…
Still. She almost felt bad to say that it felt rather nice. Especially as Pinkie became more and more eager to showcase her nudity, insisting that she wear the apron that currently hung about her daughter’s neck. Holy LORD, this should not have taken this long. I've been working on this stupid story for the length of the year so far. I should've produced this ages ago. But I'll be damned, I've not been myself in an age for about a million different reasons. Fuck me.
