Poring over the numerous files in her tablet, Sweetie found herself in a rare sense of contentment. A mug of peppermint tea in one hand while another held a stylus, sifting through the numerous ballads that she had stored within the SD card, songs from across the decades that she could use as inspiration. She’d always had a love for Ella Fitzgerald- for obvious reasons! Such a beautiful, sonorous voice that just swept one’s mind away to the grand bands of yesteryear, especially when Louis Armstrong was the accompaniment. Just imagine all that glamour and glitz, so many loving couples swaying to the sound of one of the greatest singers that had ever been or ever will be. If she let herself be indulgent, it wasn’t hard for the young woman to see herself in similar shoes: crooning an aching love ballad that set a whole host of hearts to melting, dressed in the utmost finery and utterly at home before a microphone.
Maybe, if she got lucky, she’d someday get the chance. But for now, sipping her mug of hot tea, the daydreams felt just as nice. And there were so many styles with which she could practice! Why only be a master of the crooners of yesteryear? So much of music had changed, and pop music brought such an energy; maybe that would be a great place to start for a debut album. And then who knows where it would go from there? Hmm… would it be better if she made her own EP and debuted without a record contract, or should she try to-
A creak from somewhere in the living room came to her ears, alerting Sweetie to the fact that she was no longer alone. From her comfortable spot in the dimly lit kitchen, she peered through the threshold to see a long-haired silhouette slowly push the front door closed, hunched over and barely able to hold back tremors across her form. As the door was gently pushed close, the beauteous figure took a moment to try and recover only to give a sob and rush up to the bedroom above.
Sweetie sighed; so Rarity was in a mood this evening, and not a good one by the looks of it. Was she going to require sisterly aid, or did she want to be a drama queen and cry her night away alone? Either one was just as likely as the other. For one who’d seen it occur countless times over her childhood, having to play the role of comforter in her adult years wasn’t something the aspiring singer had anticipated. But what could she do? Ignoring Rarity’s misery hardly seemed a kind thing to do. Comfortable though she was, Sweetie took only a few minutes to decide that she needed to at least allow Rarity the opportunity of denying her company. And better see it begun early rather than beating around the bush…
Pushing Rarity’s bedroom door open just a tinge, Sweetie was pleasantly surprised to find that her sister wasn’t in paroxysms of grief atop the bed, instead removing her jewelry before her vanity mirror. There were plenty of sniffles, sure, but this was the most sober she’d ever found her elder sister to be when in the midst of sorrow. Hopefully her presence wouldn’t be what set the fashionista off…
“Rarity? Rares?” Sweetie called softly, pushing the door open further so she could stick her head in. “You OK?”
A long, wet sniff and Rarity sat up straight atop her chair, looking over to the concerned sibling just outside. “Sweetie!” She said thickly. “Oh, goodness, I’m sorry- I didn’t even realize you were back home…”
“Scoots and AB needed to head out early,” Sweetie said, now daring to enter within. “Are you OK..?”
“Y- yes, yes, I’m fine, darling,” Rarity answered, though the wetness in her voice answered otherwise. “Just… just a bit morose, that’s all.”
Sweetie hoped her surprise didn’t show on her face; Rarity was definitely unhappy, but also not having a meltdown about it. Feeling a little surer that she wasn’t going to have her shoulder soaked by tears, she dared to take a seat on the bed. “I thought you had a date tonight… what’s wrong?”
“Oh… yes, I did, darling,” Rarity said. “That’s- where I came from. But it was Thunderlane and I’s… last. That’s all.”
Sweetie stiffened. Uh-oh. Rarity was fresh from a break-up and they were in the same room, a certified recipe for disaster. The memory of she and Flash breaking up at the end of high school had been a terrific disaster; Sandalwood and she had actually had a shouting match at the end of her freshman year of college that Sweetie had somehow been ‘gifted’ the fortune of witnessing. Was this only the calm before the storm? “Oh… Rarity, I’m sorry…”
“Oh, it’s- don’t be darling,” Rarity said, even though she gave another heart sniffle. Her hand reached out from where she sat and soon found it in the grasp of her younger sister, glad for the squeeze. “I was the one to end it this time, actually. It was just… very hard to do.” At last able to look over at her fellow, the beautiful fashionista gave a watery smile. “A first time for everything, isn’t there?”
“Y- yeah…” Sweetie hoped the awe wasn’t too strong in her voice; Rarity had broken up with Thunderlane? She usually held on like a dying man to rope all the way until the last strand frayed. The very idea that she had been the one to end the romance-! “Wh- what happened?”
“Oh, it was… we simply weren’t compatible,” answered the older sister. “I hated the thought of us being one of those couples that… that always just fought wherever we went. So I decided it was time to be done. But he was so very insistent that we try and carry on… I hated having to say that I didn’t feel the same.” Her beautiful head sunk low in despair. “Such a nice man… he deserves to be happy.”
More stunned than she’d ever been in her life, Rarity looked at her sister in absolute awe. Not once had she ever, ever guessed that her sibling would actually behave so calmly after a breakup. Rarity cherished romance more than oxygen! How was she not having an utter meltdown after her relationship ended- and she’d even been the one to end it! Had the world gone topsy-turvy? “I… oh.”
Rarity gave a weak smile, then struggled to hold back tears; a few even managed to leak out, tearing at her mascara. “Oh, I know it was the right choice, but he- he was so unhappy… I hated having to hurt him so. But I know it was better for it to end this way.”
“Yeah…” Sweetie wasn’t sure what to say. Not just for comfort, but for basic common sense; Rarity was being remarkably mature in regards to romance and that wasn’t something she was used to dealing with. Was she even necessary here? “Are you… gonna be- you know, OK?”
Another heady sniff. “Yes, yes… I will be, darling,” Rarity answered, giving her sister’s hand an assuring pat. “I know you must think I’m about to be a mess. Heaven knows I have been dozens of times over before, haven’t I?”
It felt rude to give an honest answer right now, so Sweetie only allowed herself to give a smile. Surprisingly, it was enough to set her sister to a weak sort of laughter, one she could share in. “I’m right downstairs if you need me,” she offered.
“And I’m glad of it,” Rarity said, rising from her seat to give her sister an embrace. “You’re too kind, Sweetie Belle, truly. You’re wonderful.”
“About time you noticed,” was the teasing reply, and this time both could laugh heartily.
“Cheek!” Rarity’s eyes still held tears, but there was less sorrow within them. “Well, I’m… going to get myself settled for the night, I suppose. Thank you for coming to check in on me, Sweetie.”
“Anytime.” She walked to the threshold and paused. “You want me to close your door?”
“Please, darling. Have… have a good night,” Rarity said.
“Night, Rares,” Sweetie called, and walked away to leave her sister to grieve quietly alone. As she pulled the door closed, there was a sense of admiration for her sister she’d never felt before; yes, there was always the beauty she possessed, but this was… a maturity. A loveliness of character she hadn’t displayed before. Sweetie couldn’t help but smile at the freshly made memory.
When her parents had declared their desire to pursue their dream of moving to Vanhoover permanently, Sweetie had been left aghast. Moving? She’d only just begun her first semester of college, really begun to feel her way out into the world away from her familial influence. Where was she going to live if the home she’d always known to be home was no longer? For a little while, the young woman had been forced to seriously question her path and where she was meant to be. It had almost been too silly to believe that she’d not considered moving in with her sister. Rarity had a decent townhouse in a safe part of town; the only question would be if her beautiful, oft-dramatic sister would be willing to live with her younger sibling again. The answer had been a swift yes, and Sweetie had found herself comfortably nestled in the smaller bedroom ever since. Rarity was actually a great roommate: generous in her cooking, always willing to help clean, and hardly ever complained. A drama queen when it came to actual issues –and romance of any kind whatsoever- but far better a housemate than she’d been when they’d both been young. She’d even been a listening ear for when Sweetie declared her intent to pursue a musical career, encouraging Sweetie to continue with her education as well as chase her dreams.
As of now, Sweetie lay in her bed, waiting to hear the sound of her sister making use of the small bathroom they shared. It was about her usual time to get up, just a bit past eight and the sun creeping through the windows. But not a sound so far, and Rarity wasn’t one to break her strict punctuality. Was something amiss?
Memory flickered back to last night, and the tears that had been shed. Right. Perhaps she was… still a bit morose. Sweetie pursed her lips; maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if she decided to check in. Or bring about a pick-me-up. All it would take was a quick trip downstairs to the kitchen for her to begin…
Rarity, on the other hand, still lay beneath her bedsheets. Sleep had been hard to come by last night, and where she currently resided didn’t feel comfortable enough to see her awakened nor back to slumbering. The world was still grey and cold, even if she knew it to be otherwise. The severing of romantic ties had been her call to make; why did she lay there and mope so?
“Silly girl you are,” she murmured quietly, enough fight in her to at least give herself a good chastising. “What are you being so sad for? You knew what you were getting into. And you didn’t like him as much as he did you. You made the wise, mature decision.”
The words were true, even if her feelings made them ring hollow. She hated how the end of relationships felt, regardless of who had seen the deed done. And she wasn’t quite as young anymore, twenty-five now… practically an old maid! Even if there was still hope, the beautiful seamstress couldn’t help but feel that her time was running out. A clock ticking that would see all hope for love and marriage being swept away into the past, never to be found again. She had her work, yes, her friends and her family- but to be alone like that. Solitary…
She dreaded the feeling. So Rarity looked out into her dim bedroom and tried to rouse herself into some sensible thought. It was time to get up and be productive, even if she didn’t wish it-
A knock came at the door, off-kilter and a little awkward. “Rarity?” The voice of her lovely sister came through from the other side. “Are you awake?”
“Yes, darling,” Rarity answered, though abjectly confused as to why she heard Sweetie now. “Is something wrong?”
No answer at first, but then the door opened to allow Sweetie entry, a tray in her hands that carried a plate of hot breakfast and steaming tea. “Morning,” she said softly, gazing at her sister with love and sympathy. “Figured you might like a little breakfast in bed. You know, to shake things up.”
It was as though the whole of Rarity’s world had suddenly come aglow, her dank and empty bedroom being filled with sunlight from beyond the threshold. The sight of her sister there, smiling so warmly and carrying such a delicious meal of all her favorites: egg muffins and bacon with a side of grits! “Oh, Sweetie, darling,” Rarity breathed, drinking in the sight with wonder. “You- darling, you shouldn’t have!”
Sweetie gave a bashful smile and shrugged, setting the tray down so that her sister could begin to dine. “Let me know if anything’s off. I think I did alright this time. I’ve… never been a great cook, have I?”
“Oh, Sweetie!” Rarity was so affected that it was a wonder she didn’t cry, beckoning for the younger girl to come about for a hug. “You really are the most wonderful person. This is so kind of you!”
The two women laughed together for a bit, sympathy and love overwhelming sorrow and melancholy before they could see the day ruined. With plenty of food to go around for the both of them, Sweetie and Rarity made a meal together as they began their day in harmonious chatter, caring not for the crumbs or mess that they could make. There was reason to be kind and pleasant, why pay attention to anything else? The morning was made for them.
“So, were you planning on just sitting around the house today?” Sweetie inquired, cradling her own mug of tea as she set on the edge of the bed. “I figured you would probably be in sort of a mopey mood today…”
“Oh, I’d certainly love to do just that,” Rarity admitted, polishing off her last crumbs and giving a stretch, “but I’d like to not keep up the habit. I would say my time might be better spent doing something more useful, don’t you agree?”
“Like what?”
“Well…” Rarity gave a small chuckle as she mentally pored over her planner. Try as she might, she didn’t have a great host of things to attend to. “I… do have an order I can finish up. A lovely lady out on the west coast commissioned me for a dress and I’ve almost finished. I just need to see to hemming it properly. And to see the buttons for the collar be sewn in.”
“Which dress?” Sweetie inquired.
“The one in the closet, on the mannequin,” Rarity gestured. “Just take a look in the door, you’ll see it.”
Sweetie did just that, pulling open the walk-in closet and peering in, finding a mannequin adorned in a beautiful pink tea-length dress dotted with strawberries- and also on the floor with one of its wooden feet snapped. “Umm… I’m guessing that’s not where you want it.”
“Oh, drat it all!” Rarity cried. Setting her tray aside, she quickly moved into the closet to examine her craft and see to its needs. “The stand broke, look at it! Oh, that’s what I heard fall over last night, I thought I’d imagined it! And I’m still not done…” The beautiful woman examined her newest creation, uneven hems and more that would require her touch. “So much for a quiet day at home, I’ll have to see if I can buy a new one at the consignment shop. Or somewhere-”
“Could I help?” Sweetie offered.
Rarity blinked. “I suppose you could. How, though?”
“I could be your mannequin, I guess,” the young woman suggested. “You’ve done that before for stuff. Am I close enough in size? I can help you out when I come back from classes.”
Rarity put a hand to her lips, pondering the thought. “Well, you’re… probably a little thinner, and more buxom, but- yes, I’d certainly be grateful. Would you really be willing to stand still for that long? I could very well take a while.”
Sweetie smiled. “I guess it’ll help that I’m not a hyperactive middle-schooler, won’t it?”
“Oh, you really are the best, darling,” Rarity said, and she gave her sibling another heartfelt embrace. “What time do you think you’ll be back?”
“A little after one?”
“Then I’ll make sure you have a lovely lunch waiting for you,” Rarity said warmly. “You really have been my dearest person lately, haven’t you?”
Sweetie could only give an embarrassed shrug and carry on, delighted all the same. What sort of person was she if she didn’t rescue a damsel in distress when the damsel was right before her? Sister or not, no one could ignore that.
For once, it was her world that was darkened.
Sweetie had been in a good mood all day. Coursework had gone well, her first midterm had come back with a good grade; there were reasons to be cheerful. Beyond having a disposition towards the pleasant, the young girl had little reason to want to be depressed or upset. Why not have joy in the everyday? But today happened to be… disconcerting. And she knew not quite what to do.
I am not going to hide, Sweetie counseled herself, sitting on the couch in the living room and refusing to shed a tear. She’d handled worse rejections, hadn’t she? So what if the first record company she’d had the bravery to reach out to had decided to send her a rejection letter- the world was to carry on. Even if the hope had been of a more personal nature, the response had been less than friendly, and- and maybe it had been enough to…
Sweetie pushed the tears away long before they had the chance to really form. No, she was not going to behave like a child over this. Not here, not now! Too far had she come to ever be that tearful girl ever again. Even if- if…
The sound of the front door opening was terror like a lightning bolt to her heart, and Sweetie tried to throw the letter into the trash, only to realize she wasn’t near a trash can and what she’d thrown was now sitting on the floor. Scrambling for the refuse she’d discarded wasn’t the best of sights and she knew it, but she had to make sure it was out of sight-
“- And goodness knows what Rainbow is going to do, she actually made the Olympic trials. Can you imagine here up there on a podium? She’ll never let us hear the end of it.” Sweetie was gifted pure luck; Rarity was on the phone and not paying attention to her actions, speaking to whomever it was on the other line. Likely Fluttershy, if her guess was good. “Yes, of course I’ll support her regardless, but she does need to behave a little. All that arrogance does nobody good. I’d hate to see a dear friend be a puffed-up prig.”
Noticing nearby company, the beautiful fashion monarch gave a wave and a smile to her younger sister before returning to present conversation. “No, darling, I don’t hate Rainbow, I love her dearly. But that means I’ll criticize her bad habits, you know I only mean well for a friend… no, I won’t say anything to ruin it. If someone is to counsel her, that would be you. You’re her oldest friend and all… if you want to say something, you do it however you think best and I’ll support you… yes, I’ll be sure to be in touch soon. Take care, darling!”
At last free from whatever had been bound to her since her arrival, Rarity hung up her end of the line and gave Sweetie a dazzling smile. “Goodness, I wasn’t expecting to see you out here this late. I thought you’d be getting ready to go out with Apple Bloom and Scootaloo. I know you mentioned having plans...”
“I wasn’t feeling it.” The truthful answer, even if it didn’t explain much. Sweetie had let her oldest companions know that she wasn’t feeling up to being sociable. Being good folk that they were, they hadn’t questioned any of it.
“Are you alright, darling?” Rarity inquired, taking note of her sweet sister’s more solemn countenance. “Feeling alright?”
“Yeah.”
Rarity scrutinized her sister, trying not to peer so intently as to be obnoxious. It had been a month since she’d come back bawling from a relationship she’d willingly ended, and Sweetie had been a steady hand since. Was this her time to return the favor? “It’s not like you to be so reclusive,” she said, coming to sit on the floor and allowing Sweetie the whole of the couch. “Is everything alright?”
Sweetie, still bound by gloom and shadow, wasn’t eager to spill the beans. But as she felt her features screw up in displeasure, a part of her began to speak a little louder; who else in the world could she trust more than her sister, who had been there at her side through thick and thin? If anyone was worthy of hearing out her shame, it was this lovely creature that smiled at her now. Tentatively, the child within still acting as though abashment was coming, removed the crumpled letter and envelope from its place beneath the blanket. “I… I got a response.”
Rarity was no fool and was quick on the uptake; to her feet did she rise, settling herself beside her sister and taking her into her arms. “Oh, darling,” she murmured softly, “what a poor decision they made. Anyone who could hear you knows you’re a marvel to behold. Why, you could make the angels weep!”
“They said I was outdated,” Sweetie said, and at that she felt a tug in her throat. No tears, not now! “I thought I’d show off, and- try a little Ella Fitzgerald. But I guess it didn’t amount to much.”
“Darling… oh, my Sweetie Belle,” Rarity said. Cradling her sister’s face in her hands, she made sure that no words were to be missed, keeping that emerald gaze held with her own. “Now you listen here: I know quality when I see it, and I know your voice is magnificent. Don’t you go and let this one foolish opinion try to rob you of your dream. I have promised that I’d be there when you had your first real performance and I will, no matter how many years it takes. And I intend to keep that promise, do you understand?”
“But what if I don’t-”
“You will,” Rarity assured her, and she placed a kiss on Sweetie’s nose for good measure- the action enough to make them both giggle. “I’ve no doubt! There’s still the chance, darling, and you know it. Plenty of other labels to try and see. Someone with some sense will sign you in a heartbeat and, and… and when they do, I’ll design you a whole wardrobe!”
“You will?” The sheer effort!
“I most certainly will, darling,” Rarity assured her, all smiles and still not releasing Sweetie from her grasp. “I will be your biggest fan, your staunchest supporter, and I’ll always be the one who designs your outfits. You’ll do more than just dazzle the world with your voice, you’ll make them all fall at your feet!”
“You mean you’ll make them fall at my feet,” Sweetie said, and there was a lilt in her voice that spoke to happiness. Unable to suppress her abashed laughter, she took Rarity into a deeper embrace and let the warmth flow through her bones. “Thanks, Rarity. It means a lot.”
“And I meant every word, darling,” Rarity assured her, her voice so soft and lovely to the ear.
As their embrace came to an end, the two women simply sat there and gazed at one another with smiles on their lips. There was a loveliness to be found in one another, a contrast that was as pleasant and different as they were from one another: Rarity’s appeal was sensuous and potent, a smoldering thing that lured one in. Yet Sweetie had the better body, more petite and bearing the breasts and bottom of a modern-day supermodel; her hair fell in waves to just beyond her shoulders, Rarity’s fell to her waist in curls. There was a natural beauty in Sweetie, the allure of finely set makeup and eyeshadow upon Rarity’s own beautiful form. As they held and beheld one another, it was though they looked upon one another for the first time and saw something truly resplendent rather than the sibling they’d always known. There was only the woman they saw now, and a heartbeat striking in between.
“Would you like to dance, darling?” Rarity inquired, taking to her feet and pushing the coffee table aside. “Why let these blues get the best of you? I’d hate to see such a… sweet thing as you be despairing.”
“I’m not great at it, though,” Sweetie said, and she said so truthfully. Even at prom she’d been useless.
“Then let me guide you, darling,” the glorious seamstress said, taking her partner in hand and seeing her settled. It was to be a dance of intimacy, arms wrapped comfortably about one another to enjoy the presence and warmth they could share. “Might I… ask for one thing? One little extra thing?”
“Of course…”
Rarity smiled, pulling out her phone and seeing it put music to life; the notes that came were soft, lilting to the soul. “Sing ‘Misty’ for me, darling,” she breathed.
Sweetie smiled, the prickings of tears in her eyes. Who was she to not oblige? What flowed from her lips was only her very best, and nothing else would ever again come close.
Drunk? No, certainly not, such a behavior wasn’t ladylike. And they were both ladies, weren’t they? They just happened to be having a good time and being in good moods. With alcohol involved, only to help the good cheer flow. Absolutely not were either of them inebriated, Rarity would never lead her favorite person into such debauchery!
But she did feel like her head was a bit fuzzy. So maybe there was a little truth to it. But not like she had anything to be ashamed about!
“A little more, darling? After all, we have more than enough reason to celebrate,” Rarity purred, pouring out more of the champagne into her sister’s glass, letting the joyous liquid flow freely until it touched the rim. “There we are… now, where were we?”
Sweetie’s eyes were fixated upon the glass, she taking in the champagne and its brilliant colour. Rarity, as always, had chosen well for this little girl’s night; a vibrant brút that was tempting to the palate, and good for celebrations. It simply had so many bubbles, though! Were they supposed to have that many bubbles? She’d never really had much alcohol, so this was novel. She had to study it a little, see if this was to be the norm for her drink.
“… Darling?”
Sweetie rose from her fixation. “What?”
Rarity opened her mouth to ask a question, and then halted. “Where… what were we saying?”
The two women pondered it for a moment before Sweetie finally confessed, “I don’t know!” It was all they could do to keep their laughter in check. This was a posh setting, after all, a lovely cocktail bar just outside the main thoroughfare of downtown and away from where the silliness of college kids would despoil the atmosphere; it wouldn’t do to be too raucous.
“Goodness, darling, we are a couple of silly girls, aren’t we?” Rarity said, stirring the décor of her glass with a slow twirl of her finger. “But maybe we needed it… there’s no harm in being silly when life is good, is there?”
“Nah… not tonight,” Sweetie said, her voice so soft and happy that she hardly knew how she could stand it. “I know it’s not a guarantee or anything, but it’s nice to think that people took a look at that song and thought I was… worth the time.”
“Of course they did, darling!” Rarity said, taking Sweetie’s hand in hers and giving it a squeeze. “A voice so beautiful and lovely, you were perfect! Everyone who heard it had to think you were amazing.”
“It’s not a record deal, though,” Sweetie reminded her. “They might still say no.”
“But we both know they won’t,” her elder sister assured her. “They’ll invite you in, you’ll sing a few ballads, and they’ll melt at your feet! You have such a repertoire to show them, why wouldn’t they say yes? There’s no chance they won’t sing you on the spot. After all, look at the reception your video received! The public already loves you!”
Sweetie flushed, yet still all smiles as she recalled the very truth her sister spoke of. It had been at the insistence of Rarity that she’d even dared to record herself, merely a simple cover of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep to help feel a little better after a long day. But the amount of positive feedback she’d received! A viral video in less than a day, and even a record company reaching out to bring her in for an audition- more than she’d ever dared expect when all she’d done was enjoy singing for her sister to hear.
“I… I hope it goes alright,” Sweetie said quietly, feeling nervous as she looked towards the future. “I… it could go badly. But I really want this.”
“You’ll do fine, darling! And I just know that the outfit I design for you will send them over the edge.”
In her current state, it was as though she was hearing the delighted news for the first time all over again. "Oh, you'll really design a dress for me? You really will?"
“Of course! I can’t let my beautiful Sweetie go onstage without her being dressed in the finest!” Rarity crowed, taking a sip of her champagne. “I’ll design every outfit you could ask for darling, for every occasion. When you’re onstage, when you’re at the red carpet… oh, for everything you could imagine! I’ll be delighted to do it! I'll be in charge of your wardrobe for your entire career, if you'll let me!"
Sweetie could only flush at that declaration, delighted beyond words that the best designer she’d ever seen was to be the mastermind behind her wardrobe. She’d look the part no matter what, at least! “Rarity, that’d- that’d be amazing..!” She breathed. “Thank you, so much!” She reached out and put her hand atop Rarity’s. “You’re just- just- the best! Ever!”
“Oh, you’re too sweet, darling,” Rarity declared, and without warning she leaned across the table and placed a kiss on the young songstress’ cheek. “Heaven knows what I’d have done without you these past several months. I feel like a new woman thanks to you being by my side!”
The beautiful girl smiled. It was strange to think that something so sorrowful had changed their world for the better- and so drastically, too. They’d always been close, and pleasant roommates to boot, but ever since Rarity had become single again… there’d been a change. They spent more time together, spoke to each other more often. Secrets were being shared the likes of which they’d never dared speak of. It was as though from the death of romance, something new had begun to bloom.
Which reminds me… “So,” Sweetie said, trying to sound nonchalant as she stirred her glass. “I think this is the longest you’ve ever been single. What gives? No one good enough to catch your eye yet?”
Rarity laughed and gave her sister’s hand a gentle swat. “To inquire about a lady’s love life- the nerve!” She said. “Oh, I just… I haven’t known what to do with myself. I know what I like, but I’m not sure what to make of it all.”
“As in you’ve found someone?” Sweetie asked.
Rarity hesitated. “Perhaps,” she drawled. “But I have… reservations, you see. Hesitancy. A lady would hate to make a rash decision. I simply must choose something wise. And ladylike!”
“You’re looking for a rich CEO, aren’t you?” Sweetie teased.
Rarity truly laughed that time, her beautiful curls moving across her radiant features like waves of rich color in motion as the current took them. “Oh, surely you don’t think your perfect sister is a gold digger!” She cried.
“Well… you at least go for good-looking people, at least,” Sweetie remarked, earning another playful swat that set them both to giggling. “You’ve got a type.”
“Do I? I didn’t try to have one,” Rarity said. “I always tried to keep an open mind. Who knew what sort of person would surprise me?”
“Then… have you ever considered women?”
Rarity’s mirth disappeared from her face. For a moment, the younger sister worried she had gone too far, dared too much. But her sibling’s face was pensive, not angered or offended; she was genuinely considering the question. “I… I have,” she confessed. “And perhaps there’s one who may have caught my eye. But-”
Now that made Sweetie’s eyes go wide. “Really? You’ve always dated men. I never figured you’d try to swing the other way.”
“Well, a lady can still be a lady no matter whom she loves, can’t she?” The gorgeous seamstress said proudly. “I just… wish to make up my mind. And be sure of how I feel.”
Sweetie leaned in a little closer. “So you’re not even gonna tell me who it is?” She inquired lightly. A bit breathily.
“N- not yet, darling,” Rarity confessed, and at this she looked ashamed. “Don’t hold it against me, please. I know I’ve come to trust you so deeply…”
“I’m right here, Rarity. Whenever you want me,” Sweetie assured her. Her beautiful locks tremored only slightly, the rich shades about her emerald eyes making her sweet features radiate like a line of jewels. “I’ll always hear you out.”
“… You promise, darling?”
“I promise.”
For a moment, they merely looked at one another, hands held and all thoughts lost. But their closeness had to make itself known before too long, and only a few heartbeats was what it took for them to be aware of this intimacy. Faces only mere inches apart, the potent rhythm of their hearts in sync; the crowd about them shouldn’t be privy to such a thing.
“Well- for another time,” Rarity declared, falling back into her seat and putting a well-manicured hand about her champagne flute. “Here’s to you, my darling Sweetie! May you be the next superstar of music!”
Sweetie gave a smile and made sure their glasses clinked. “To my future –and forever- wardrobe designer!”
And so they enjoyed their night, hearts beating as one and trying to recall that one moment where everything had nearly changed.
Rarity sat in front of her vanity mirror, seeing to a smooth and thorough application of lipstick. She had to look her best, didn’t she? Especially for such an occasion as this. It wasn’t often nowadays that she had a formal event to attend. It was really Sweetie’s event –a celebration by her college to send off the end of the semester- but guess who she’d decided to ask as her plus-one?
“Really? Rarity had been sitting on the couch, poring over a new request for a dress when her younger sister had sat down to chat. “You want me to go with you?”
“Sure! It’ll be a great time,” the beautiful woman declared, all smiles and eager to see the moment come. “We can both wear something nice, have a lot of fun, dance and be silly… just us girls! It’ll be fun!”
“But… darling, isn’t there someone in your class you’d like to go with?” the fashionista inquired. “A boy, a girl? I don’t know… surely you don’t really want to attend such a soiree with your boring sister.”
Sweetie did seem to give the thought consideration, but only ended up shaking her head against all alternatives. “No, not really,” she said. “I think going with you- no, I know I want to go with you. Come on! It’ll be way more relaxed that way. No pressure or anything, we can just be silly and have a good time.”
In truth, she’d only been feigning hesitancy. The moment this beautiful singer had offered a chance to attend a party, she’d been hooked; Rarity only had to pretend that she was uncertain about the whole thing lest she seem too unladylike. But now? “Well, then,” she said, her face in such a smile that it almost hurt. “I suppose I could… cook something up for us to wear. How fancy will this little party be?”
“Semi-formal. It’s only a college party. Nothing too crazy.”
“And you said there’ll be dancing? I assume there will be… libations, also?”
“Dancing? Definitely,” Sweetie nodded. “Alcohol? I dunno, but I’d guess so.”
“Hmm…” Rarity considered her sister’s words and then looked back down at her tablet. Pushing aside the commission she’d been given, she opened up a sketchbook and took to it with her stylus, hastily putting together a quick rush of designs. “No, you shouldn’t do strapless, it doesn’t suit your aesthetic-”
“Huh?”
“I mean that you’re too sweet-looking, darling,” Rarity assured her, “You’re not… sensuous. Seductive. Your allure is something lovely. I think I’d like to lean into that, even if…” she flipped over her tablet for her audience to see. “… I think something miniature wouldn’t hurt you.”
Three weeks and a great deal of inspiration, Rarity currently wore one of her latest fashion masterpieces, the color of which she matched with what she put upon her plump lips. A lovely amethyst pleated minidress, strapless and tightly bound to her curvaceous figure to help accentuate her beauty. The fabric had been her most difficult choice, eventually deciding upon a knitted fabric that shone brilliantly beneath light; not quite metallic, but certainly close to it. A bit more scandalously short than what she typically wore to occasions, but this wasn’t quite her usual clientele; younger crowds hardly minded a little extra sensuality to a woman’s attire.
Finishing up with her lipstick, Rarity admired herself in the mirror; a smile came as she took in the perfectly applied makeup, how the eyeshadow made her eyes pop. Taking to her feet and allowing her body to be flaunted, her smile became something smug. “Oh, you are lovely,” she purred. “Perhaps not quite as buxom as Sweetie, but your curves- to die for, darling!” She blew herself a kiss and giggled. Yes, she wasn’t up to Sweetie’s caliber in certain aspects, but did such a thing really matter? That beautiful singing girl would be on her arm all evening long; if anything, that was far better.
Leaving her room, the beautiful fashionista came to the other bedroom door and knocked. “I’m ready, darling. Are you all done in there?”
“Just a minute! I’ve got to try and look as good as you probably do,” Sweetie called.
Rarity wanted to hush her, but could only blush and smile. Sweetie was so ready with a compliment nowadays- and how the older woman loved it! It was like the early days, the flirtations and feelings that would come when two tiptoed around the obvious. They’d both become so close in the past many months, practically inseparable; so many nights out for drinks, nights at home with warm cups of tea. Yoga classes, making dinners, and so much more… it was almost as if they’d begun to- well, it just wasn’t said aloud yet.
“Coming! Ready to see it?” The door to Sweetie’s room cracked open just a hair, only a sliver of her green eyes there to be seen. “It feels amazing, by the way.”
“Certainly, darling!” Rarity said, leaning back casually but stomach all aflutter. “Let me see how my latest creation looks on you. I just know it’ll be glorious!”
“Alright…” The door went closed for a second- and then swung open, revealing the lady behind it to an awestruck crowd of one. Hands on her hips, beaming out her radiance, Sweetie was the perfect example of a sweet beauty. Colorful, silken hair that came to an end in gentle curls, a simple hairband keeping it all in order. Light eyeshadow, a dusting of makeup across her cheeks, and a clear lip gloss that gave highlight to the warmth of her smile. But most gorgeous of her adornments was the raspberry minidress that held fast to her features, a low neckline revealing more than her usual share of cleavage to contrast the lower hemline that covered just the right amount of thigh. It could have been so excessively sensual were it not for the straps across her shoulders, and so there stood a young woman with all the gentle loveliness in the world, now given a romantic edge to her appeal for the purpose of celebrating a grand night.
Rarity gasped. “My stars, darling..!”
Sweetie’s smile was wide. “That good?”
“Absolutely splendid, darling! You look wonderful!” Of course they shared a hug, holding one another and taking time to point out all the various things about one another they found lovely. There was plenty of cooing and adoring to be done, considering all the fine aspects of one another they continued to find, whether it be how well Sweetie wore her dress or the fineness of Rarity’s figure beneath her dress. The two sisters could hardly seem bothered to see the moment come to an end, even as they began to take pictures to help remember the moment.
“How about a few more saucy ones, dear?” Rarity said, removing herself from her sister’s embrace. “A few that are a little more scandalous, just for us! To look back on and enjoy.”
Sweetie gave her sister an amused glance, surprised and struggling not to laugh at such a proposition. “Is my fancy older sister suddenly not that fancy?”
“Well, a lady has to let her hair down every now and then,” Rarity countered, giving her own shimmering locks a shake for emphasis. “Now, how about something… a little lower? One for just we two?”
Her sister caught on quick, and a few photos from down below were taken before too long, revealing the loveliness of their fine forms for them to indulge in and enjoy. The garments below were revealed- or lack of, in Rarity’s case, Sweetie laughing uproariously as she discovered her sibling’s shocking secret.
“No panties? At a formal event? What on earth happened to you?” She asked, stomach beginning to hurt from the laughter. The evening hadn’t even really begun and already she was already enjoying herself immensely. “Who are you, and what have you done to my sister?”
“Oh, I’m simply being a perfect date,” Rarity said, giving Sweetie’s shoulder a gentle swat, only a small tinge of pink on her cheeks and a smile still remaining. “Besides, who else is to know but you? I certainly don’t want anyone else to find out. It’s for your eyes only.”
The beautiful songstress shook her head. The very idea! All her life she’d always known Rarity to be the primmest, most proper creature in all the world, down to the smallest iota. To think that she suddenly was deciding to be so brash and bold, so forward about her intentions… well, it was as though the world had gone topsy-turvy. “You… do look nice in your dress,” she murmured. And her face went a soft pink.
“And you in yours, darling,” Rarity replied, leaning in to press her painted lips against Sweetie’s soft cheek, the kiss lingering for just a moment.
The feeling of her..! Sweetie could feel the presence of where her sister had kissed her, lingering even after the moment had passed. They simply were there together and enjoying the moment. But why let it simply be staring into one another’s eyes? Sweetie dared to return the gesture, leaving her own glossy mark upon Rarity’s cheek. “So… how’s that for payback?” She asked.
Rarity only laughed and held her sister, offering a second kiss on the cheek- one that was promptly repaid by Sweetie. Then a kiss on the nose, one replicated; a kiss on the neck that was repeated happily. And then a-
They hesitated, the barest brushings of most tender flesh uniting only to occur as the moment halted. They gazed at one another, a mix of confusion and joy and unbearable longing like a storm in their hearts; it could be so swift and easy now, hardly even a nudge to make it begin. But the hesitation was still there, as though something beckoned to them both to belay their need and hold for a time yet to transpire.
“Rarity…” Sweetie’s arms were fast about the form of her sister; looking into those sapphire eyes was somehow the most delightful and painful thing she could possibly do. “Are we- what’s changed?”
“Something wonderful, I think,” Rarity offered, though her expression suggested that perhaps even she didn’t truly know just yet. Was it fear Sweetie she saw in her sister’s eyes? Hesitancy? It was difficult to tell what she saw versus what she herself was scared to see. “But… might we head out? We’ve a lovely evening ahead of us.”
“Yeah… yeah, that sounds good,” Sweetie said, and she took Rarity’s arm in hers, the two giggling sisters heading out the door. There was to be a magnificent night that awaited their entrance.
From the moment they arrived, it was clear the two ladies were going to steal the show. Their attire was unrivaled no matter where they looked, no woman able to be their equal. The glamour and sensuality of others couldn’t hope to match what they so naturally exuded; though Sweetie knew she gained many a glance from her classmates, the mysterious allure that was Rarity’s introduction into their midst was impossible for the whole of them to ignore. The aspiring singer they already knew, her angelic aspects a little too familiar to inspire awe- but who was this lovely creature that now clutched her arm? She seemed flawless in form, the proper amount of proud, and friendly with the appropriate amount of aloofness to add to her mystique. Whenever someone came up to them, Rarity would give them a friendly smile and kind words… but only for a moment. Her eyes were for Sweetie alone, her touch belonging to the younger woman who she ensured was kept at her side. Even if there was a bold one in their midst that would come forward and ask for a dance, they failed to tear her away from her evening’s date; the beautiful woman’s dance card was full, or simply reserved for one.
“You know, you don’t have to hang out with just me,” Sweetie offered as they took a moment’s respite at the open bar, quickly ordering up a pair of gin cocktails. “I won’t mind if you spent some time with someone else for a little while. I promise!”
“And I do not doubt you, darling,” Rarity assured her, “but… well, I’d hate to make you jealous. Paying attention to anyone but the divine songstress at my side would practically be a crime!”
Sweetie could only blush and turn away for a moment, her smile genuine even if she wished for it to be hidden. “You’re really good at this,” she murmured softly. “I… I guess it helps that you’ve dated a lot more than me, huh? I kinda feel like I’m just swinging for the fences and hoping I get lucky.”
A show of her pearly whites and Rarity’s hand entwined with that of Sweetie’s, smooth fingers joined together and glad of the shared warmth. “If it helps,” she breathed, “I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. You don’t need to feel like you have to try so hard with me. I… well, I- I already like it.”
“You do?”
The sumptuous woman smiled all the more, giving a small nod. “Just let yourself be you, Sweetie. I promise, that’s more than enough to win me over tonight.”
Sweetie’s blush was an even deeper shade of crimson, but this new level of delighted embarrassment wasn’t enough to see her eyes falter. She held that sapphire gaze, taking in how they sparkled like true jewels amidst the light. They were so lovely, the fluttering of those long lashes making them pop even more. If she could just… a little closer, and she just might feel the need to-
For a moment, there was a pause in sound. Chatter and noise of human activity continued, but the ambience behind faded- only to ignite once more, vibrant sound coming alive to call for their attentions. A few cheers came from the crowd as they recognized the ballad, more than a few rushing out to the dance floor to promptly revel in this new siren’s song.
“Oh my gosh, that’s my favorite song!” Rarity gasped, the catchy pop tune already working its magic upon her curvaceous figure and bringing motion to life. “Can- Sweetie, shall we? Oh, do your lady a favor!”
“What? As if it’s even a favor!” Sweetie declared, one last sip of her drink before setting beside her sister’s. Taking the older woman’s arm in hers, the two went out into the crowd so as to join in the frolic, their place within the maelstrom of human joy impossible to resist. “Come on, beautiful! Show me what you’ve got!”
For longer than either of them likely would ever realize, their evening took to this rhythm and held to it: dancing to a song deemed beloved before returning to their drinks so that laughter and vivacious words could be shared between them. Each new round of this tender, intimate cadence saw their words become a little more affectionate, their dancing increasing in sensuality. Spurred on by the imbibing of what alcohol that pleased them, sister held sister as more and more precious as the night carried on. Sweetie, a little less seasoned with her consumption, found herself wondering if she would be so openly affectionate if she were not a little tipsy; the more steady Rarity wondered how much further she would go if alcohol truly took hold of her. Bit by bit did they find the space in between to shrink, a particularly romantic tune seeing them slow dance together in perfect unison.
“You’re quite the dance partner, darling,” Rarity whispered into her sister’s ear. So close that she could feel the fabric of their attire rubbing together, her body was beginning to generate a tremendous heat beneath the friction; enough to make her core ache, even.
“Mmm, I think you’re better,” Sweetie said, looking up into her sister’s brilliant blue eyes with an open, happy longing; her left hand playing with the curls of the older girl’s hair, the right gently stroking at the rearward fabric, were doing wonders at putting her thoughts on open display. “I’m so glad I asked you to be my date tonight. This is amazing...”
“It truly is, darling. You’re the best date I could have asked for.” She could have acted upon her remark that very instant, Sweetie’s shining face so close and there for the taking. In fact, why not act? No one here knew who they were; hadn’t she just been introduced as Sweetie Belle’s date the whole evening long? They were hardly even the only pair of women in the crowd’s midst that were behaving amorously. She only had to lean down just a hair and they would be fully unified, a physical connection that would transcend even the spiritual. If only she was absolutely sure that-
Sweetie’s dreamy gaze was torn away from that adoring pair she loved and looked beyond, growing wide as delight overcame her. “Ohmygosh, a photo booth!” She said. “Look there, look!”
Rarity turned about and saw the report to be true. Comfortably nestled in the back of the spacious hall was a lavender photo booth with a curtain concealing the interior, a giggling couple exiting from within and returning to their crowd of friends further away. The fluttering of the curtain, the gentle light within the booth… it called to them!
“Ooh, we should go get pictures together!” Sweetie said, so excited by the thought that she bobbed up and down on her feet. “Come on, let’s go! Hurry!”
Perhaps she was a bit more tipsy than she gave herself credit for; Rarity gave a small squeal of delight at the proposition and the two raced from the dance floor in a stream of giggles, making their way over to the awaiting photo booth and making themselves comfortable inside. Only a simple bench was available for them, but that was more than enough for two slender, sumptuous women to make themselves comfortable upon- especially when physical familiarity was what they desired.
“Come here- come here, darling!” Rarity tutted, pulling a delightedly laughing Sweetie Belle onto her lap, the younger woman acquiescing and putting her arms about the form of her companion. “Ooh, you hardly weigh a thing. And… there! Right where you belong!”
“You ready?” Sweetie asked. “What kinda photos do we wanna take? Silly ones, fancy ones?”
“Oh, whatever we feel like, darling!” Rarity said, and the two laughed together. A finger to the button and their miniature show began. “Come, come, darling- now, your most flirtatious look!”
Their first portrait came before either of them were truly ready, Rarity only able to begin attempting an affective smolder while Sweetie hardly even knew where to look for the camera. Too busy laughing at their outright failure, the second and third photograph caught them in each other’s arms and drunk on joy, unable to collect themselves and relishing the silliness of the moment. For two girls who so often prioritized formality and proper behavior, their failure to even come close to such a thing could only spur on their mirth. When the photos came to an end and the negatives dispensed for their viewing pleasure, still were they unable to contain themselves; Sweetie’s hiccups made Rarity giggle even more.
“OK, OK- I promise, I’m ready this time!” Sweetie declared, wiping away tears of laughter from her eyes before it managed to ruin her mascara. “Sorry! There we go…”
“It’ll still be a lovely memory, darling,” Rarity said sweetly, and the shimmering glow of her gaze emphasized the passion behind her words. “There now… get comfortable in my lap again- that’s the ticket..! Right where you should always be.”
“… I like this feeling,” Sweetie said, a solitary finger playing with one or Rarity’s curls. “Being in your lap. All comfy and cozy.” For a time, they simply smiled at one another, relishing the loveliness they continued to find in one another. The smile, the beauty, the glow of life that was radiant across their faces- the potent, sultry appeal of feminine beauty that defined it all.
A hand reached out to press the camera button once more, hesitating just long enough so that it might not give pressure just yet. “Sweetie,” Rarity began slowly, sounding almost nervous, “Would- does it bother you that we’re… kin? Do you mind that we’re sisters?”
Sweetie gave the matter no such thought, all smiles as she shook her head. “Of course it doesn’t, Rarity,” she said softly, perhaps even leaning in a little closer. “I like it.”
“And if I were to kiss you..?”
“Then I think I’d enjoy it,” the young songstress whispered, breath tinged by gin falling upon her sister’s plump lips.
Rarity smiled and pressed for the camera, arms returning to hold fast to her sister’s waist. “Now, darling… where were we?”
Sweetie smiled and leaned in, meeting Rarity’s lips in a tender press as the first camera flash illuminated their romance, their first kiss forever held in photograph ever on. The softness of the gesture soothed their beating, anxious hearts, quelling what fear and doubts either of them may have still held within. The gloss of lipstick mingled, the cool fire of alcohol added flavor, and the deep satisfaction of kissing the one they longed for only gave fuel to their desiring spirits. When the second camera flash came, their kiss had deepened, Rarity’s grasp coming tightly about Sweetie’s waist just as the tender touch of the young woman intensified about her shoulders; the third flash found them leaning back, melting together as happy, delighted sighs escaped their united mouths, the kiss in utter fullness as each gave themselves over to it. No empty space to be found, no hesitancy, nothing less than the fullness of their affection was there for them to take in, and the end of their first kiss came all too soon.
“Darling,” Rarity said, tenderly caressing the soft features of her sister, “I… I was so sure I’d given up on love. That I could just be happy the way I was. But now- now there’s you… I hardly know what to do with myself if I don’t have you by my side.”
“I’ve been crushing on you for months now, Rarity,” Sweetie murmured, giving Rarity’s neck a soft peck. “I know it’s…” she hesitated.
“… Different,” Rarity offered, earning a glance of relief in return. “But I think different suits us just fine.”
“I liked kissing you,” Sweetie offered, and in her emerald eyes was a sultry spark that was set to ignite. “Can… we kiss again?”
“Can we have several kisses, darling?” Rarity said, and her grasp upon her sister became ironshod.
“Can we have a makeout session?” Sweetie breathed hungrily.
“Can we have sex- right here, right this very moment?”
“And you won’t mind it not being proper?”
“Not at all, darling,” Rarity said fiercely. “Kiss me, darling. Kiss me and ravish your lady!”
And with a delighted, voracious grin, Sweetie did just that. Plunging forward until the union of their lips was a reckless thing, she kissed Rarity with a voraciousness that made the older woman swoon. A fiery stream of kisses saw them come together, glossy sleekness joyously merged with dark color until the two were irrevocably mixed together and impossible to distinguish who had begun with what. Sounds of happiness would escape them whenever their mouths parted: a swift breath so that another liplock could come about, a delighted sigh, a contented coo... the music sister made when pressed against sister was a symphony their ears cherished to hear. As a particularly fierce kiss found her mouth, she wondered if it was appropriate to become a little more touchy- would it be too much for her serene sister? The thought evaporated when she felt Rarity’s hands knead at her breasts. Throwing caution to the wind, she let hands grope across body wherever she wished, a contented sigh of happiness escaping her. Ooh, how perfect Rarity felt! Sweetie gave a giggle, pulling away only a hair’s breadth. “I didn’t know you could swear like that, Rarity,” she teased. “What’s got into you?”
“Shut up and spit in my mouth,” Rarity snapped, not at all in a mood for conversation when there was love to be made. Tongue outstretched, she made it clear that there needed to be escalation.
More than willing to oblige, Sweetie at first gave her sister’s tongue a gentle lathering; a transfer of fluid as tongue massaged tongue, the gentle motion eliciting a giggle from them both. But soon she took aim and spat into that open mouth- twice, even! The first had been obligation, but the second earned a cry of delight. Another press of tongues together for good measure, spittle becoming excessively viscous and seeing their painted lips become a mess of thin strings.
