Twilight looked around, confused at the strange turn of events. Her morning coffee cup was frozen solid, hovering in the air like it was encased in somepony’s telekinesis. More confusing, the spilling coffee was frozen in a dark brown waterfall. She rubbed her eyes, considering the very likely possibility she was half asleep and dreaming the coffee cup, or even entirely still asleep and dreaming the whole morning.
“Spike! Can you see this coffee cup?”
Spike did not answer. When Twilight turned to question his silence, she noted that he was frozen in surprise.
She decided that this did not bode well. The “Still Asleep and Dreaming” theory was rapidly gaining traction. Carefully, she gently tapped a hoof on his head. It was rock solid, far sturdier than the dragon’s usually hard but pliable scales should be.
She tapped harder, and it hurt her hoof. Spike continued to be distressingly unresponsive.
“Oh dear…” Twilight looked further around the room, noting that the steam from her cup was also frozen in space, not floating lazily to the ceiling as thermodynamics suggested it should.
Her eyes happened across a clock, the second hand also frozen. She groaned as the visual made her predicament clear. Time had stopped. Or more accurately, she wasn’t anchored to the timeline properly.
Still, if that were truly the case, she’d be dead. The chemical reactions that kept ponies alive only worked because they could happen while properly anchored in time, and more immediately, she needed to breathe air to live. The air, as exemplified by the frozen steam, should be properly anchored to the timeline, and yet she was able to breathe something. If it was some sort of field protecting her, the liquid coffee or the steam would have moved when she poked them.
They had not.
She tried to scoot her chair back in order to get away from the table, but it wouldn’t move. Grumbling, she worked herself free from the chair and the table by climbing over the chair back and working her hind legs free from under the table. Landing on the ground, she noted the muteness of her hoof-steps.
The silence caused her some minor concern. It indicated that perhaps she wasn’t moving the air around her as she moved. The “clop” noise that usually accompanied walking, trotting, or in her case, jumping off a chair, was caused mostly by the air getting trapped between a hoof and a hard place. If the “clop” wasn’t happening, it meant her hooves hadn’t trapped the air. Yet, she was somehow moving through it.
Twilight filed that information away. Her hooves didn’t trap the air, but she could move through it. Was it moving through her? With a panicked look, she checked herself over. As far as she could tell, there was no oozing blood or even any bruises forming. Now that she was thinking about particles, how could she see? Light should be frozen as well. She “hmm’d” in thought, sitting down on the hard floor to contemplate the situation.
As much as she tried, no simple rule of physics or magical theory could explain her selective ability to interact with the world. It didn’t seem to be an automated spell, at least one she could decipher. If she’d truly lost her anchor to time itself, she’d be quite dead, blind, and disintegrating from micro-particles. That was assuming the rules of physics even held true. If they didn’t, then she’d immediately dissolve anyways.
That ruled a few situations out, and highlighted an important fact.
If she truly wasn’t dreaming, then this situation wasn’t an accident. It had to take complex spellwork to preserve her physical and mental integrity while keeping her out of the timeline. Even more immediately distressing, she realized it would likely require direct observation in order to fine tune the spell.
Any entity capable of safely removing her from the timeline and observing her would be capable of hiding from her as well. Perhaps a second later in time, or a second earlier. Or maybe in the same frozen moment, but simply outside of view.
Twilight swallowed her fear, and forced a mask of placidity on her face. She was a princess now, she could handle this.
“Can you come out? I know you have to be watching me, and I have some questions.”
An excited alien voice reverberated in her mind. “Wow. Less than two minutes. I’m impressed!”
Twilight had a cold chill go down her spine, but maintained her calm composure as light coalesced into a being in front of her.
The creature was tall, much taller than her. It had golden legs, bare naked feet, and was wearing a white toga. As she watched, the facial features on it firmed up until it looked like one of the humans from the mirror Equestria. Silver hair lined its head, and a small golden wreath was circling over it, like a round floating hat.
She tried her best to keep her composure as she analyzed the creature. “You look like a human, but you are not. They don’t have magic. You also aren’t Equestrian. Your spellwork is far too foreign. What are you?”
The creature smiled, showing sharp golden teeth. Two appeared to be almost fangs. “Correct! I’m not technically a human. I am once again impressed by your knowledge. While I knew you would be a smart cookie, I hadn’t expected you to be quite so rabidly analytical.”
Twilight pursed her lips. “It’s keeping me from panicking. Now, not to be rude, but what are you and what do you want with me?”
The creature tapped its chin. “What I am is a boring question. The answer is absolute, and based on your analytical prowess, you will eventually deduce it. A better question is who am I? What is my name? Such a thing cannot be wrung from the information on display before you. More importantly, perhaps the answer changes as you ask me. Of course, it may stay the same as well.” The creature tapped the table, creating a clicking noise that distracted Twilight from the otherwise eerie silence.
If the creature was right and she could deduce what he was, then she already was aware of whatever kind of creature he was. He wasn’t something new. She focused on the tapping, it sounded like the seconds of a clock, and was the only noise she could hear.
The tapping suddenly stopped. “Well? Aren’t you going to ask me my name?”
Twilight shook her head, momentarily disoriented. “Fine. What are you called?”
Its smile grew. “Ooh. Analytical and clever to boot. I’m going to like you. Fine. I’ll give you something to work with. I’ve been called Vladimir. I’ve been called Zhang Wei. I’ve been called James. I’ve been called evil, good, omnipotent, powerless, everything and nothing. I’ve been called a tyrant, a dictator, and gift. Really, the only thing I have not been called is late.”
Twilight frowned. The names it gave meant nothing to her, but the rest was informative. “You are… time. In the same way that Discord is chaos. You’re a spirit.”
It chuckled. “Close enough. I prefer being called a god.”
Its answer made Twilight nervous. “Equestria doesn’t have gods. We have spirits…”
“And princesses! How wonderful!”
She continued slowly. “Therefore, you are not from Equestria, are you?”
Its eyes sparkled with golden light. “No. I am not.”
Twilight tried pulling on her magic, but found it unresponsive. She probably couldn’t call on her magic when she was stuck out of time. Her hair started to stand up, as she realized how utterly powerless she was in this situation.
“You are incredibly dangerous, aren’t you?”
“That goes without saying! But so are you.” Its eyes narrowed as its smile became almost vicious.
She slowly shook her head. “I might be a princess, but I’m a minor one. I don’t control the sun or the moon. I merely embody the concept of friendship.”
It shook its head. “No. You are far and away the most powerful princess. It’s why I came to you.”
She didn’t retort, unsure of how to respond.
It rolled its golden eyes. “Your world subsists on magic, unlike mine. Also, in your world, friendship is magic. Your potential influence is impossibly powerful. You alter fates, change destinies, bend the river of time to your desired destination. If I was from your world, even I’d be subservient to you.”
“It doesn’t work like that here. All the princesses work together.”
“Because you will it so! Tell me, did they ever go at odds before you?” The toothy grin was back, fangs and all.
She frowned. “I see where your going with this, but Celestia and Luna made up on their own.”
It laughed. “I can see through time, Twilight Sparkle. You played a large part in it. One of your facets even reformed the spirit of chaos, a natural enemy of your world. No, don’t deny it. Her magic is merely an extension of yours. Everything in your world, from the moment you put on that tiara, bends to your will eventually. Whether you realize it or not.”
Twilight shivered again. “It’s not like that.”
The god laughed again. “Your tyranny, while far more benevolent, is as absolute as my own.”
She glared at the mirthful creature, slowly growing angry, but unable to find the words to refute it. “No. I don’t… It isn’t like that.”
It shrugged. “Like it or not, it is.” It reached forward, and gently tapped her nose, momentarily causing her to go cross eyed. “Lucky for me, I am not from your world, and at the moment we are not entirely in it.”
Twilight huffed, her fear and anger fighting for control over her emotions. “Fine. If we are equals, then I formally request to know what to call you and what you want from me.”
It raised its silver eyebrows and raised its hands in mock surrender. “Okay! You got me. Lets call me… Kairos. I think the moment is ripe for that.” It giggled at some joke that Twilight didn’t understand.
“Then, Kairos, why have you stolen me from my proper timeline? You could have entreated me easily enough without doing so.”
Kairos sighed. “No. No I could not. At least not as I wished.”
“Can you explain?”
“I’m… old isn’t the right word. Perhaps eternal? I always have been. And I always have been absolute. My form is reflective of the people who worship me, but I existed before them. I was a concept that had yet to be conceptualized. After they pass, as I know they will by my hand, I will continue.”
Such a fate hadn’t occurred to Twilight, and she contemplated it. Kairos was eccentric, but perhaps with good reason.
“Truth be told, I’m… lonely isn’t the right word either. Perhaps bored? Yes. Bored. So I happened across a solution to my problem.”
She took a breath. Maybe all Kairos wanted was a friend. Equestria had many creatures that might be understanding to the god’s odd plight, herself among them. Twilight smiled, putting forward the most honest cheer and confidence she could muster. “If you need a friend, I can certainly help with that.”
Kairos’s features momentarily fell into a flash of disappointment. “No doubt. Certainly if I’d approached you while you were anchored to your time, and more importantly to your power, you would have.”
Twilight’s blood ran cold as she considered what Kairos had said. “You need me separate from my power because you don’t want to make a friend. In fact, making a friend would be detrimental to your goal…”
Kairos nodded, the god’s face quite serious. “Indeed. You are so powerful that I had to approach you with everything all at once. No hesitation, no weakness. It took all of my power and focus to rip you from your timeline. I had to hit you so hard from out of nowhere that you had no hope of recovering, and no hope of manipulating me, as you are want to do.”
Twilight reeled from the information. Kairos had been scared of her.
“Me, of all beings, had no time. Now that is irony. The moment I entered your world I had to strike. No preparation, no research, no anything. I couldn’t risk your power influencing me across time. Normally I’m quite knowledgeable about those I interact with, but in your case I’m observing you as much as your observing me.”
Twilight bit her lip. “That’s why you hid at first. It was to give you a slight edge in our interactions.”
“I was afraid you still had access to your power. That you’d bind my fate in a way I hadn’t wanted.”
She glared at him, suddenly angry. “If I’d had my true magic, you’d have destroyed me, wouldn’t you?”
Kairos glanced slightly away. “Yes…”

Kairos calmly waited for her.
She decided to put her emotions about nearly being killed on hold, and focus on the problem at hoof. She’d have plenty of time to be angry and afraid later.

Slowly she refocused her gaze on Kairos’s eyes, searching them for answers. “So what need do you have that requires you to assault me so violently?”
Kairos grimaced. “You’re not one to mince words, and your language is right. I bore down on you with the entirety of my power for seemingly no reason. Fear and anger are an appropriate response.”
Twilight sighed. Kairos had some empathy; at least the god seemingly felt shame for its actions. “As I said, what need have you of me?”
Kairos glanced at her. “I thought I was clear. I need you completely in my power. I appear to have succeeded.”
Twilight nervously chewed her lip, frustrated at the way the god was skirting the answer she wanted. “So how does having me so utterly in your power alleviate your boredom? That appears counterproductive. If you had access to all of Equestria, then Discord would be a better choice for entertainment.”
“While Discord is entertaining, and would continue to be so if I took him home with me, that’s not the solution I’m looking for. Eventually, which is quickly for me, even Discord’s antics would become mundane. I need a limitless, and eternal supply of entertainment.”
Twilight’s mind was churning through possibilities. Based on what he thought about her, there was one likely possibility. “So you need me to… alter fate for you somehow?”
