“Why can’t I dream? Where is it written that I can’t have hopes and aspirations? My thoughts no longer break free of the monotony, the mundane and grey walls of life. The dreams I once found escape and retreat in no longer comfort my nights. Now as life painfully drags on, I feel myself going through the motions, but I have no feeling left, having given so much and received so little back from this world.”
With pencil in hand a young man sat there at his desk, spilling his thoughts onto paper. Each flowing stroke of writing, ebbing away the sharpened point of the lead. The shadow of a young man stretched eerily across the parchment, its looming presence expanded and accentuated, by the single lamp casting a dull glowing light throughout the small room. He paused here and there, as a long drawn out sigh would pass through his lips, embodying his sullen and sorrowed state of being. ”What do I do,” He asked aloud to the empty room. Sitting expectantly for a moment, as if awaiting an answer.
Sadly though no answer came, only silence ringing out with its deafening non existent song of solitude. He leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his shaggy brown hair casting a searching glance out into the darkness. His worn and weary eyes shining a dull green, they had lost the almost emerald brilliance they had once contained. But one could not expect a pure hue to remain radiant with life, seeing all, and living as that young man had. Another long sigh resonated from the young man, as he rubbed his eyes in a mix of frustration and exhaustion before looking out the window to his right. Night had settled hours ago. Now rain had begun to knock at his window, leaving tiny droplets of moisture that streaked down the glass.
Is this it? He thought, as he gazed out into the night sky. Is this how it will end? He stood pushing his chair back from the desk he’d been sitting at, before he stepped towards the window to gaze out more intently at the night sky. He stood in silence for what seemed like an eternity, hands clasped together ever so gently behind him, against the small of his back. Turning to gaze at his room, collecting his thoughts, he quietly looked it over. His room was small and simple with a bed, a writing desk, and a nightstand as well as select various items. Everything was neat and organized, as if everything had it’s own designated place. Time had seemed to stand still as he just stood there, letting his shoulders slump forward with a sigh, looking at the paper on his desk.
“Well then, I suppose it’s about that time,” he whispered to himself. As he walked back to his desk. He reached down, grabbing the pencil he’d been using earlier, as he scribbled a few last notes.
“There, that’ll do it,” he spoke again. His voice trailing off as he laid the pencil back down, his gaze now falling on one of the desk’s many drawers. Reaching down he slid the drawer open, taking from it a small bottle of whiskey. A black label its only markings. “How about one last drink my old friend,” he asked. Almost as if it was normal to talk to a bottle of ninety proof.
He made his way towards a door in the corner of his room. Opening it he reached in and flipped on the light. Nearly blinding himself with the sudden reflection of the light, off the white tiles and fixtures. The bathroom, same as his bedroom, was immaculately conditioned. Everything shining brilliantly, showing it’s owners care in cleaning it. Another sigh escaped him. Hopefully the last. he thought. As he sat down on the floor. Leaning his back against the bathtub, twisting the cap off the bottle clenched tightly in his hand, taking a long drink. His face contorted slightly from the harsh burning of the liquid, as it snaked it’s way down his throat, before finding his stomach.
He gasped before inhaling deeply, wiping the excess from his mouth with his sleeve. Oh! I never thought if I was dressed for the occasion. He thought, suddenly looking down, giving himself a quick once over. Black slacks, dress shoes and a long sleeve button up…it’ll do. He thought, but soon his thoughts quickly returned to the bottle in his hand. He took another long drink, the previous burning sensation now numbed. He wasn’t sure of the time, all he knew was that night still blanketed the world, as rain gently washed all that seemed wrong. He suddenly found himself wishing things were that simple, as he finished off the last bit of whiskey.
Silence overtook him once again, his shallow breaths mixing with the soothing sounds of the rain. “Well then,” he spoke. Looking towards the ceiling, a steady stream of tears cascading down his face. “Well then, I guess this is goodbye,” he said. Suddenly smashing the bottle he held onto the cold tiled floor. Without a moments hesitation he rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, before grabbing a broken shard of glass. Quickly he brought it across one of his exposed wrists, then suddenly across the other. He held back a gasp at the sensation of the glass slicing through his skin, and soon became silent, watching his very life drain onto the cold white floor and pool beneath him. Minutes passed and soon his head was becoming heavy, as he quickly found his strength seeping away. He slumped over, his eyes shut firmly, body growing numb. He knew it wouldn’t be long now, a few more minutes, and he would be free to dream forever.
“You, do you really hate your life this much,” called a stern yet tender voice.
“I do. I have lost all hope, and I am tired of clinging to this existence. I’m tired of the constant ridicule and torment...I’m tired of my kindness going unnoticed,” he said. his strength fading more and more, with each passing moment he could feel death’s embrace drawing closer.
“Did you wish to receive reward for something so simple as living with kindness in your heart,” The voice called. Its tone seeming almost saddened.
“No, I only wished to be accepted. I wished that even just once that my kindness would be returned, or even noticed.” He could feel the sensation of tears forming in the corner of his eyes now, the voice seeming to take hold of his heart.
“Then I must know, do you truly wish to die,” the voice called. He shifted his body, stretching out onto the floor. Blood soaked his clothing, dying his white shirt a crimson red. He reached out, summoning up what strength he had to do so.
“No, no I don’t want to die,” he cried. Suddenly feeling something nuzzle his hand softly.
“Then I will save you, give you a second chance. However you will never know of the life you once had. you will begin anew, my friend.”
Friend? he thought. When suddenly he recalled memories he thought long forgotten. “Wait,” he called. Struggling to move, forcing his eyes to open as he saw the flowing blue mane of his friend. “It’s you, I’ve waited so long for you,” he whispered. Seeing the alicorn princess’ face lower into view.
“I’m sorry, I’m so very sorry I made you wait all this time for my return,” she spoke softly. Nuzzling his cheek, as he became engulfed by the blue aura of her magic resonating from her horn.
“Lu…Luna…please tell me I won’t forget you,” he whispered. Every breathe strained as he became weaker. Luna turned from him, a tear falling, rolling down her cheek.
“I’m sorry, but you will forget ever knowing me. I will be nothing more than a stranger to you after tonight.”
He could feel his heart break at her words, the pain of those words seemed to numb his already weakened heart. Still he had to be strong, he couldn’t show any remorse or fear. He wouldn’t let her see his pain. It was his final gift to her, as he accepted her final gift. The final gift she gave to a broken young man, foolish enough to take his life. He reached out, his hand falling limp over one of Luna’s forehooves, as he forced a smile.
“No matter what this new life you give me brings, I will find you again Luna,” he said. The smile slowly fading from his lips. He could feel it, his time was nearly over. The princess of the night felt a pain burn in her chest as she listened to his words, tears now streaming down her graceful cheeks.
“Because I never got the chance to tell you that…that…I…I…love.” His body fell limp, the last of his shuddered breaths escaping his lungs. Luna stood silent, her chest heaved as small sobs passed her lips.
“I will miss you my friend but I can never let this happen to you again...I can never let memories of our time together burden you,” she leaned down kissing his cheek tenderly as she spoke. Giving one final look down at her friend. The bathroom became engulfed in her magic, and just as suddenly as Luna had appeared...she was gone. Along with the young man she knew as her friend.
The bathroom, stained red with blood, was the only evidence found by the police several days later. Those who investigated the young man’s disappearance, found only a letter left on a small desk. The letter asking why dreams no longer came, why life was so unfair, and why kindness seemed to be nothing but a myth. The letter signed by James Ivanez...

Chapter 1: Entering The Beyond.
“Hey everyone look!” Called out a child, pointing and laughing. His tone and demeanor mocking the very existence of the small frail looking boy, who he’d forced into the spotlight. As others began shouting callous words of malice, the child who’d became the target of their assault simply stood there. Tears streamed down his flushed cheeks, wishing only to disappear, as he began to vocalize his cries. “Why don’t you go back home weirdo!” Shouted another child as he flung a rock at the boy, barely missing his head, before a second volley hit it’s mark.
James gasped as he suddenly sat up, his head throbbing with an intense pain. He let out a low sigh, placing a hoof against his temple, before taking in his surroundings. “I still have no idea where I am,” he said in a frustrated tone. Rising to stand from his resting place beneath a large tree. He couldn’t explain the situation he found himself in, no more now than when he awoke three days prior. He only knew his name was James. Other than that, he didn’t know where he was, or where he’d been before.
He began to walk, just as he’d done the previous days, not really having any set destination. As far as he was concerned, anywhere was where he wanted to be, anywhere that had other signs of life. Don’t get him wrong, nature was amazing, but waking up alone with no memory in a forest…wasn’t exactly his idea of a camping trip. As he walked he found himself stumbling from time to time, as if he was a child, still getting down the concept of walking. He couldn’t help but wonder why everything seemed so common, so familiar to him, and yet it was if he were learning a new way of life.
He was exhausted, and he could feel small twinges of pain shoot through his legs with every few steps. The first day he’d awoke he could barely stand, let alone walk. Each step he’d fallen, trying to quickly grasp the mechanics of movement, and his legs showed signs of many failed attempts. Cuts and bruises covered his legs, body and wings. He was thankful he’d gotten the general idea of walking. He knew that the cuts that already pained him with a dull burning sensation, were going to be enough to handle without proper medical attention, let alone adding more to it. All he could think about was finding somepony, anypony to help him. He needed rest, not on the cold forest floor, but in a warm bed for his strength to return.
“Oh are you serious,” he questioned. His tone irate, as rain began to slowly fall. Within minutes the seemingly harmless summer shower became a downpour. Soaking his brown shaggy mane and tail, along with his light brown coat and wings. “Why am I even here,” he shouted suddenly. Feeling the frustration of his situation finally boil over. “Where the hell am I,” his shout echoed through the forest. But he received no answer. All he was given in return was the sound of rain, striking the earth that he walked on.
“I just…I just want to go home,” he said finally. Breaking through the melody the rain had created. “Wherever home is,” he trailed off. As he realized that shouting at empty woods would do him no good.
He continued to walk, feeling the weight of his body grow, straining what strength his legs did have. The rain soaking him to the very core, causing him to shiver. I can’t lose my cool, I just got to think, I just got to remember something…anything! He thought, as he took refuge from the rain best he could, beneath the branch of a large tree. He looked himself over, ringing out his tail, before attempting to stretch out his wings. Learning to walk had been more than a challenge to him, so he’d simply passed on the notion of flying. To be honest, he didn’t even know if flight was possible, and he wasn’t in any hurry to find out. After he’d collected himself, and dried off the best he could. He began the task at hand, trying to remember anything he could.
All I really know is that my name is James…and I’m not even entirely sure about that. He thought, rubbing a hoof through his dampened mane as he thought. All I can really remember is waking up in this forest. He slouched forward as he thought. Even though he knew it was unlikely he’d remember anything, he was still slightly depressed by the realization of how little he actually knew. Maybe if I just rest, at least until the storm passes…maybe then I can remember something? He thought, as he folded his legs beneath him. I’ll just rest here until it clears up…then I’ll keep going. With that thought, James slipped off into sleep.
“What’s wrong, you going to cry?” Asked a smug looking young man, his eyes and words lined with an obviously condescending tone. “What good is crying going to do you anyways?” His voice was cold, his words sharp as they cut at the brown haired boy he belittled.
“I’m not crying, you threw dirt in my eyes…you…you cheater!” The boy shouted, as he tried to cover his emotions.
“Whatever you little twerp, you should know by now you’re too different to hang around with any of us.” The young man said calmly, turning away from the boy. “But just in case you haven’t gotten the message.” He said turning quickly, drawing back his fist.
James’s eyes flew open, he was panting heavily. His eyes shot back and forth, taking in his surroundings once again, as he felt a shiver run down his spine. The rain had stopped and night had fallen, as the moon cast down a silver glow on the world. He sat there for a moment, his breath seeming almost forced, as his chest heaved. “Why,” he started. Quickly silencing himself for a moment so he could think. He inhaled deeply, letting out a long, shuddered breath. How long was I out for? He thought, as he stood and stepped out from beneath his branch shelter. Should I keep going…?
The forest was dark, the moon providing the only light. Stars blotted the night sky, offering a dim almost soothing glow. James found himself simply staring up at the night sky. The longer he looked up at the almost ephemeral blanket of the night, the calmer he found himself becoming. Suddenly he could feel something, something scratching at the back of his mind. I can remember this. I can remember sitting and staring up at the moon each night…but why? His moment of happiness at remembering even such a small detail about himself was soon stolen away. Replaced by an unknown sorrow and the realization that even his memories brought more questions.
James continued to sit there, even though he clearly didn’t know why, he just sat there. Each star that his eyes fell upon, seemed to shine brighter than the one before. Each time he paused and stared longingly at the moon, everything was like recalling something sealed away and forgotten. When suddenly his eyes became focused on one star, far outshining the others.
A beautiful blue aura shown brightly from the denizen of the night, drawing his full attention. He could feel a strange sensation in his chest, a yearning he could not describe with words. He felt as if it was calling to him, a single light amid the darkness that would lead him to safety. He paused, reeling back from the surreal moment, shaking his head. What am I thinking? I may not remember many things…but I know stars do not call out to ponies. He felt almost foolish as he turned away from the night sky, to stare down at the darkened soil beneath his hooves. He sighed, as if he was soon to give up hope. Yet once again he turned his gaze back to the sky, the star he’d focused on earlier burning even brighter now.
His eyes widened at the marvel of the stars brilliance, and he could feel his body start to move forward. Well it’s not as if I can get even more lost. He thought, putting one hoof in front of the other, slowly walking in the direction the star held before him. First he walked, then cantered and eventually found himself at a full gallop. He moved as fast as his weakened body could take him. His hope for escaping the forest somehow renewed by the glow of the star that plotted his course.
How long have I been running? He thought, his chest heaving as he ran. He could see the moon had clearly moved, following it’s course through the night sky. The star that guided him however, had stayed stalwart in it’s position. The rest of the sky moving seamlessly around it, yet there it stayed, vigilant in it’s position.
Time continued on, time that James could not define. Soon he could see the moon slowly sinking beyond the horizon. Giving it’s final farewell before it’s sister the sun awoke, lighting the world in a golden blanket. Still he pushed on, mustering the last of his strength to chase after the star that was slowly beginning to fade.
No, no, dammit don’t leave me! He found himself thinking frantically. Suddenly he caught sight of a shape, an all too familiar shape through the tree line. It can’t be? He thought. With one final burst of energy James dove from the forest, landing hard on the ground just beyond. He rolled across the hardened earth, finally coming to a sudden stop as he smashed into the side of a building. A gasp escaped his lips, knocking what little air out of him was left. He closed his eyes as he rolled onto his back, his front and back legs falling limp from exhaustion, his wings tucked tightly against his back.
I…I can’t believe I made it out. He thought, opening his eyes to see the last bit of the beautiful blue aura that radiated from his heavenly guide fade into morning. Thank you. Letting out a weakened chuckle, he wondered why he’d just thanked a star. His ears perked suddenly, hearing the sounds of hooves rapidly approaching him. As they drew closer he could feel his body give way to the strain of the last three days.
What did I run into? He wondered, a small smile spreading across his face. He turned his head and let out a small laugh, as he saw the giant red side of a barn. Boy do I have a comeback for that old you can’t hit the broadside of a barn comment. He thought, relieved that he could make such nonsensical jokes now that his life wasn’t on the line.
“Whoa there! You alright stranger?” James’s turned his head seeing a rather concerned looking pony wearing a Stetson. He couldn’t help but smile, taking note of her light orange coat and blonde mane.
“Well I could be better.” He said weakly with a chuckle, feeling his eyelids grow heavier. “Sorry about running into…your…barn.” With that he slipped off into sleep, too exhausted to say or do anymore.
Chapter 2: To The Nurse's Office.

Chapter 2: To The Nurse’s Office.
Light filtered in through the small window. The soft golden glow blanketing the body that hid itself under a layer of blankets, in an attempt to embrace the night for a moment or two longer. James was desperately clinging to sleep. His dreams for the first time in what seemed like an eternity, or at least since his waking in the forest a dew days ago, weren’t filled with nightmares. He slowly roused himself from the warm nest he’d created himself, and sat up in the small bed. James couldn’t remember it all clearly, then again he couldn’t even remember anything but his own name. He did however recall running through the forest, before...oh yeah he had run into a barn...hadn’t he? A small chuckle escaped him as he thought about how frantically he’d ran, how much force he’d pushed to his legs. How obviously blind he’d been from the sheer adrenaline pumping through his veins, and then wham! I didn’t even know I could run that fast. He thought, rolling off of the bed. His hooves landed on the wooden floor of the room. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the calming feeling he found in the simplistic surroundings.
“Looks like y’er feeling a heap better there stranger,” called an orange mare, leaning against the doorway.
James turned to see her standing there, and smiled at her words. “Uh yeah, I’m actually feeling a lot better,” he paused. “Then again I had been sleeping in the woods before,” he said. Rather embarrassed by the fact that he had indeed been forced to sleep on the forest floor.
“Yeah about that, what were you doing out there?” She had stepped inside the room, staring the unknown pegasi down suspiciously.
James found himself feeling slightly intimidated by the orange earth pony, as his mind searched for an answer. Sadly though, as had been the case when questioning himself in the forest, no answer came.
“Well,” she asked. Arching a brow in question.
With a long sigh James thought it best to be honest with her. “My name is James...or at least I think it is,” he started. “There isn’t really much to say honestly...I woke up in the forest three, no wait four days ago,” he paused, realising how odd it must sound. “I don’t know who I am, where I am, or even where I’m from. All I can say for certain is that I wandered those woods until I stumble across your barn.”
“More like ran head first into it.” The orange mare said with a small laugh, causing James to blush.
“Yeah I guess I kinda did do that didn’t I?” James joined in with his own bit of laughter, thinking about how he must have looked.
“Well it’s a pleasure to meet you James, my names Applejack. Lotta folks round here call me AJ for short.” Applejack smiled, holding out a forehoof to greet James.
“It’s nice to meet you as well Applejack,’ James said with a smile. Reaching his forehoof out to shake her’s. He cringed slightly as he felt a small pang of pain shoot through his legs, his face contorting slightly.
“You alright there James,” Aj asked? The pony after years of caring for her family, had learned to notice such small changes.
“Yeah I’m fine, my legs are just a little sore.” James looked his legs over, taking note of the cuts and bruises that covered them. “I guess I got a bit more banged up in those woods than I first thought.”
Applejack stared at James for a moment, gazing at his legs. The pony was right, a series of of cuts from thorns, and limbs covered him. “Well you look like y’er more than a little sore. I would even say them wood worked you over pretty good. Why didn’t you just fly out?” Applejack gave him a quizzical look as she waited for his answer.
James stretched his wings slowly, even they were sore from his little trek through the woods. “Well...I...I don’t know how to fly. I don’t even know if I can fly with these,” he said. Admittedly he was confused, and embarrassed by his lack of knowledge.
Aj just stared at him for a moment, finding even she was at a loss for words. “Wow so you mean to tell me, you claiming ta have amnesia...isn’t just a cover up or nothin’,” she asked, admittedly she was more than a bit confused. Here she thought that James’ story had been nothing more than an excuse not to tell her about himself. James simply shook his head, not really knowing what to say in response. Aj sighed, before stepping towards James, placing a hoof on his back.
“Look James, there ain’t a thing I can do about y’er memories,” she paused, thinking for a moment. “I won’t lie and say I know what its like to be in a place I know nothin’ about, without even an idea of who I was, or where I’m from.” With that she smiled. “What I can tell you is that it’ll be a whole mess easier if you have a friend.” The orange earth pony continued to smile, causing James to blush with embarrassment from her kindness.
‘Well come on now, I’ll introduce you to my family. I figure ya might wanna meet ‘em since you’ll be stayin’ with us a while.” Aj stepped out of the room, a smile still across her face. James stood there, more than a bit confused. You’ll be stayin’ with us a while. He thought about her words. Did she really just invite me to stay here, with her family? James wondered how somepony he’d just met, could invite him to stay with her and her family. He quickly stifled his thoughts, another quick pain shooting through him. He let out a sigh, slowly making his way towards the door. Even though he had small pains passing through his body from time to time, he couldn’t help but let out a quick chuckle out at how quickly he’d become accustomed to walking.
“James you coming!?” James heard Aj shout from downstairs, causing him to poke his head out into the hallway. “Yes I’m on my way down,” he shouted. Stepping out of the room he couldn’t help but smile. Everything looks so peaceful, so tranquil. He thought, taking in the way the Apple’s had decorated their home. The walls were lined with pictures of family, some looking older than the house itself. James slowly, and slightly painfully, made his way down the stairs. Reaching the bottom step, he was greeted by a small yellow pony. He was taken aback for a moment as she smiled up at him, her red mane tied back in a large bow.
“Hiya James ah’m Applebloom, ah’m Applejack’s little sister.” the small filly said. Her accent seeming almost thicker than her sisters, as she bounced around excitedly. James was about to respond, when he suddenly was cut off by a large red stallion standing behind her. He was taken back by the sheer size of the pony before him, as he was nearly twice as tall as James himself. The stallion noticing the look of intimidation in James’s eyes the stallion smiled, feeling a bit embarrassed about scaring the unknown pegasus.
“Aw don’t mind him Jame’s.” Applejack appeared from the kitchen, a older green mare following behind her. “That theres just my brother Big Macintosh, Big Mac for short . He may seem like a tough guy, but he’s one of the nicest colts around,” she said with a chuckle. “Eeyup,” Big Mac said in response, nodding his head in agreement with his sisters words.“An this right here would be Granny Smith,” Aj said. She stepped to the side so James could get a look at the Apple family Matriarch, who just smiled and replied simply with, “Howdy.”James looked at them all and smiled. They seem like such a happy family. He thought. When his thoughts were broken by Aj staring him right at him. James could feel his cheeks heat as he blushed. Why is she staring at me like that? He thought, seamlessly drifting back off into his own little world. “It’s very nice to meet you all, I’m James.” He finally said after noticing that their stares had all fallen on him while he’d been lost in thought.
James spent the next half hour of his morning with the Apple family in their kitchen, where he was offered a delicious breakfast. Apple pancakes, apple turnovers, apple doughnuts and apple juice...just to name a few. He ate to his hearts content, conversing with his new found friends as he did. He went back through the story he’d told Aj already, how he’d awoken in the woods, and eventually came to run into the Apple families barn. Once they had finished breakfast, James leant a hoof in cleaning up the dishes, before receiving an quick goodbye from Applebloom as she left for school. Big Mac also bid a quick farewell to James, explaining how he had to tend to the orchard, before taking his leave. As for Granny Smith, she had no sooner finished eating before she was sitting in her rocker, taking an after breakfast nap.
“Well Ah recon that takes care of the cleanup, ah appreciate the help James.” Aj called over her shoulder, as she made her way back into the living room. James following behind her.
“Think nothing of it Applejack, after all you and your family are nice enough to open up your home to me,” He said with a smile. When Aj turned to face him.
“Well ah guess we should be heading out,” she said quickly. She was looking James over again, taking note of the cuts on his legs as, she had earlier.
“Uh...where...where are we going?” James was a bit confused, she hadn’t mentioned anything earlier about going anywhere.
“Well ah thought it’d be best to take you to see Nurse Redheart. She can give you a quick look over, patch up your legs...and well,” Aj paused. “She might know, or even be able to help you with your memory problem,” she said.
James just simply nodded in response. He knew it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a nurse pony patch him up, and if she could...if she could help him regain his memory. James started to feel a bit of hope, but quickly he subdued his thoughts. He realised thats if he got his hopes up...well he realised that it would be best for him to simply go to Nurse Redheart with an open mind.
Applejack told James to wait there in the living room while she ran upstairs, mentioning that she had to grab something . She came back down after a few minutes, to find James simply sitting by the door, staring out at the orchard. She walked up to stand beside him, they exchanged a few words, and then they set out. She lead him down the front path, asking him a few questions here and there, which in turn James responded with questions of his own. They passed through the orchard, casually walking down the path towards Ponyville, stopping every so often as James would rest his leg. With each minute they drew closer and closer to Ponyville, and by the time they had reached its outskirts, James knew he was in Equestria...and that the town they were nearing was called Ponyville.
The two made their way into Ponyville, James pausing with a smile as he took in the sights and sounds. James finding himself smiling from all the different ponies he saw, even seeming a bit giddy as he watched the weather patrol pegasi fly overhead. Which prompted him to make the astute comment, “Wow so you mean I can fly like that?” Applejack just laughed at his bit of childlike splendor. That’s when he saw it, their destination. They made their way towards a small white building, a large red medical cross on the sign that hung above the door. Compared to the other buildings surrounding it, this one looked rather new. Applejack took lead, making her way to the door she opened it, ushering the bewildered pegasus named James inside.
Once inside James was quickly greeted by a white pony, her mane and tail pink, and her eyes a deep sapphire. He just stared at her for a moment, not really sure what to say, when Applejack cleared her throat.
“Howdy Nurse Redheart, hows things going with the new clinic,” she asked?
“Well hello there Applejack,” she said. “The new clinic is doing well, but what brings you here, you didn’t get hurt applebucking did you?” Nurse Redheart cast Aj a quick glance looking her over, before focusing on James.
“Nah ah’m fit as a fiddle,” Applejack proclaimed proudly. “But my friend James here is a bit worn for wear. I thought you could patch him up.” Applejack spoke, gesturing towards James as she did.
“James..,” she paused looking him over. “Well he does seem a bit roughed up...a few lacerations on his legs, as well as several on his wings.” She began to mumble something to herself, placing a hoof to her chin. “Don’t you worry one bit my dear, Nurse Redheart will fix you right up,” she said with a reassuring smile. “Now Applejack says your name is James, are you new to Ponyville,” she asked the brown pegasus?
James stammered for a moment, before recovering his train of thought and nodding. “Yes actually I am. I’ve only been here for a few days,” he paused. His cheeks shown with blush, slightly embarrassed by how he’d have to explain the cuts covering him. “I was attempting to find Apple Acres, but got lost in the woods...if you’re wondering about the cuts,” He said quickly. Feeling like a child that had to admit he’d been wrong.
Nurse Redheart simply laughed, and waved her hoof. “Now now no need to be embarrassed.” She remarked, as if she knew exactly what the pegasi was feeling. “We all get a little lost from time to time.” James smiled, thanking Nurse Redheart for her understanding, as she instructed him to take a seat behind a curtained off area, while she spoke with Applejack for a moment.
“So Applejack, your friend..” Nurse Redheart started, staring at the orange earth pony with a smile.
“Oh no, now don’t you be getting any ideas...James is just a friend ah’m trying to help out.” Aj replied quickly, causing Nurse Redheart to laugh softly.
“Oh I’m just poking some fun dear, but you know,” she paused, looking off towards the curtain James had just passed through. “Something just seems off...you have noticed he has no cutie mark?” She asked, pausing to wait for Applejack’s reply.
“Ah noticed, and thats one of the things ah wanted to speak with you about.” Applejack began to explain how she’d come to find James after he’d burst out of the forest surrounding Apple Acres, how he’d crashed into her barn, and also how he had no memory.
Nurse Redheart listened intently, finding her interest in this new pony growing by the second. “So you’re saying he’s suffering from amnesia?” She said after Applejack had finished her story, which prompted Applejack to nod in reply. “So we have here a pegasus nopony knows anything about, who doesn’t even have a cutie mark despite seeming to be in his twenties...and he doesn’t even have his memories...” Nurse Redheart rubbed her forehead with a hoof before sighing.
“Is there something you can do for him Nurse Redheart?” Applejack asked, hoping the white mare would have some kind of answer. Sadly though she was answered by a distraught look.
“I’m sorry Applejack, I wish there was something I could do...but amnesia is tricky business,” she said with a slight pause. “Even if we could force him to remember, it could leave lasting damages to his psyche. Its best that he slowly regains his memories, of his own accord.” Nurse Redheart placed a foreleg around Applejack, giving her a small hug. “What he needs is a friend, and he couldn’t have asked for a better one than you.” With that Nurse Redheart turned, and began walking towards the back, disappearing behind the curtain leading to James.
A few minutes passed, as Applejack waited just outside the clinic for James. She let out a soft sigh, as she thought about Nurse Redheart’s word’s. Let him remember on his own huh...what he needs is friends... She thought. Not even noticing the brown, bandaged pegasus that stood next to her.
“You alright Applejack?” James asked suddenly, startling Aj.
“What! Oh James it’s you...yeah ah’m just fine.” She said with a weak smile.
“Is something wrong, you look a little preoccupied?” He asked, before striking a rather silly pose. “So what do you think, do these bandages make me look fat?” James was smiling, trying his best to cheer up his friend.
Applejack let out a soft laugh, before focusing her green eyes on James’. “So did Nurse Redheart, did she talk to you about your memories,” Aj asked a bit hesitantly?
“Yeah she did, and she told me that I’d just have to wait for my memories to return.” James’ expression confused Applejack. He seemed almost as ease with the news.
“Well are you not upset,” She asked quickly.
James just shook his head and smiled. “Nah, why should I be? I know now that eventually I’ll get them back, besides if I don’t...well I guess they weren’t worth remembering.” James said with a laugh, and was relieved when he heard Applejack join in.
“Well we best grab somethin’ to eat,” Aj said once she’d subsided her laughter. “I got somepony I’d like you to meet, and believe me you’ll need your energy...or she’ll dash right by ya.” With that Applejack smiled, as she began walking away from the clinic.
James stood there for a moment, more than a bit confused by Aj’s comment as he thought about it. She’ll dash right by me? "Hey wait up, what do you mean!?"

“Where is the boy?” Asked a woman in a grey dress. The sounds of machines beeping echoed throughout the off white halls of the hospital. The fluorescent lights casted a dim glow over the patients, and visitors. “He’s in the waiting room over there.” Replied a short, blonde nurse sitting behind a large desk. The woman in grey nodded, turning on her heel, before making her way to the waiting room. The boy in question was a small boy with brown hair, his green eyes focused intently on the floor between his feet.
The large wooden door of the waiting room slowly swung open, causing the boy to turn his gaze towards the cause of the movement. “Ah so you must be James, its nice to meet you.” The woman said with a smile, taking a seat beside James. “My name is Ms. Hallsworth, I’m with the Department of Social Services.” Ms. Hallsworth paused, staring down at James. “Do you know why I’m here James?” She asked the boy, noting his sullen demeanor, and reserved gaze.
“You...you’re here because...” James began, pausing for a moment clinging tightly to a worn stuffed bear. “You’re here because Mommy and Daddy have gone away.” He finally said, his voice cracking, as he spoke. Ms. Hallsworth let a small smile grace her lips, placing a hand on the boy’s small shoulder. “Thats right, but don’t worry, we’ll find someone who’ll take good care of you.” She couldn’t help but feel sorry for the boy, and found herself wishing his situation was different.
“Come on James, lets go. I’ll take you by your home to collect a few of your things.” James nodded quietly, rising from his seat to stand on the cold, sterile linoleum floor. Mommy and Daddy are gone. James found himself running the sentence through his head over and over again. He really couldn’t believe it honestly, he’d just seen them not even two hours ago, its seemed like a strange foreign memory now.
“Have a good day at school sweetheart.” His mother had said, her strawberry blonde hair up in its usual curls. Her hazel eyes stared at her son, offering a kindness that only a mothers eyes could show her child. “Yeah we’ll be here to pick you up once school is done, and remember we love you.” Shouted James’ father from the driver seat. Green eyes full of wisdom, brown disheveled hair that perfectly embodied his spontaneous nature...thats was his dad...was being the keyword. James let a tear roll down his cheek as he realized the cold hard truth, his parents...were dead.
“James, James...you alright there sugarcube,” Applejack asked. She placed a hoof on the napping pegasus’ shoulder, shaking him gently, causing him to stir from his resting place beneath the shade of a large tree. His eyes slowly parted, as his subconscious reluctantly gave way.
"Yeah...I'm alright Applejack, why is something wrong," He asked? A yawn escaped him as he raised his forelegs in a stretch, before smiling sleepily. It took him a moment to notice the concerned look on her face, her eyes never leaving his. "Are you okay?" James could feel his cheeks fill with heat as he blushed, trying to focus on something other Than Applejack.
"Well...it's just that...well you're crying." Applejack moved a hoof to his cheek as she spoke, softly brushing away the tears from his face. "Did you have a nightmare or somethin'?"
James' face had shifted from embarrassment to confusion, raising a hoof of his own to his face. He could feel the trail the tears had left on his coat, but he couldn't remember. "I...I don't know." He said after a few minutes. "I don't remember dreaming anything."
Applejack let out a small sigh, before a kind smile spread across her face. "Well ah guess you should take that as a sign not to nap after lunch." Her tone was kind, she knew trying to push the issue wouldn't help. "So other than the cryin, how was your nap?"
James chuckled slightly, all be it simply for Applejacks sake. He didn't want her worrying, even though his mind was raging. "Pretty good, pretty good. So did you find your friend you were talking about?" He asked. Even though his mind searched drastically for an answer, he found hiding it was surprisingly easy to do.
"Oh ah found her alright, right where I thought she'd be." Applejack said, rolling her eyes.
"Really? Well that's convenient." James smiled, happy to know she'd been successful in her search.
"Oh yeah, she was doin' exactly what you was...taking a nap. Though her choice of nappin spots is a cloud."
"Wait you mean she can sleep on clouds?" James asked suddenly, trying to imagine what a cloud would feel like.
"Yeah ah mean ain't you never..." She trailed off, looking down. "Ah'm sorry James I forgot." She began to apologize, but was quickly cut off by James.
"Hey you don't have to apologize Applejack, I mean I'm probably the only Pegasus you've ever known who couldn't fly." James said with an understanding tone. For all he knew he was right, and he wasn't about to make the only friend he had feel guilty. "So no worries, okay?" He smiled at her, as he stood and stretched out.
"Right." Applejack replied, glad she hadn't upset James with her slip up.
"Wait you're gonna leave me here?" James was a bit confused. Admittedly he wasn't the greatest with meeting ponies, or at least he had the feeling he wasn't.
“Uh yeah, like ah said I need to be gettin back...so I just told her to meet you here.” Applejack asked, casting him an odd look. “Why is there somthin wrong with that?”
“No, No nothing at all.” He was lying, he was nervous, and too embarrassed to admit it. “It’s just...I don’t know what she looks like.” James said, thinking after he could’ve thought up a better excuse.
“Well if that’s all you're worried about then you’ll be just fine.” Applejack smiled, before stepping forward, and placing a hoof on James’ shoulder. “Believe me, you can’t miss her.” James was more than a bit uneasy about Applejack’s confidence.
“Is that a good thing?” James asked, raising a hoof to scratch the back of his head. A small, nervous laugh accompanying it.
Applejack laughed, as she turned to head down the path leading to Apple Acres. “Ah’ll be headin back into town later, ah’ll see you then.” She turned and started down the path, thinking to herself as she walked. Is this really a good idea, leaving James’ alone like this? Ah mean Rainbow Dash did say she’d keep an eye on him...that an if he’s gonna be needin friends to get his memories back. She paused at that thought, thinking about what Nurse Redheart had told her earlier. She thought of how Nurse Redheart had said friends would help James, how they could potentially help bring his memories back. Ah just know those two will get along, then that’ll be another friend to help James. She thought, a hidden hoof pump following the thought.
James just sighed, watching Applejack walk off. “Great...” He said with a sigh, a yawn escaping him, as he flopped back onto the ground. I wonder how long I’ll be here waiting. He thought, enjoying the shade he lay under. “Eh, it’s good to be a pony.” He said to no one in particular, closing his eyes.
“Hmmm....so thats him?” Asked a slender white alicorn, her multicolored mane flowing beautifully.
“Yes, that would be him.” Replied a smaller black alicorn, her blue mane flowing just as effortlessly as her sisters.
“But Luna, why would you bring a human into Equestria?” Celestia asked, looking over to her sister.
“Well he’s technically not a human anymore, he’s a pegasus.” Luna said in an innocent tone. She smiled up at her sister, fully aware that her response wouldn’t suffice.
“Luna you know full well what I mean, now will you give me a real answer this time?” Celestia began to slowly tap her hoof on the floor. “Well?” She asked after an extended silence.
Luna gave a frustrated sigh. She knew better than any other pony that her sister wouldn’t drop the subject, not until she got an honest answer. “Celestia...uh...I mean sister.” The young princess began, turning to gaze out the magic portal Celestia and herself had been using to watch James. “James’ story is a sad one, I won’t go into any details right now, but I promise I’ll tell you everything soon.” Luna paused, sighing as she watched James, wishing she could welcome her friend to his new life. “For now, I just want you to know that...I caused this...and this is my only way of making it right.” Luna hung her head, thinking about finding James in his bathroom...dying. Before she watched his life slowly fade from him, right in front of her.
“I will hold you to that sister, for now...go rest. We will speak more about this later.” Celestia said with a kind gaze. She could see the pain in her sister's eyes, and somehow knew this subject was not spoken of with ease.
Luna thanked her sister with a nod, and a weak smile, before heading to her chambers. Celestia thought for a moment, watching her sister walk towards her room, waiting until she was out of sight before turning to the portal. What is my sister planning, and why bring a human here? Celestia had her gaze affixed on James. He seems harmless enough, still I will keep a watchful eye on him...until I know what’s really going on.
James gazed up through the branches of the tree he laid under, noting all the creatures that scurried through its maze of leaves and limbs. How long does it take a pony to get here? He sighed, sitting up and stretching, as he did.
“Yo are you James?” Called a cyan pegasus, that hovered above James.
“When did you get here?” James asked suddenly, finding himself enchanted by the mare. “Are you Rainbow Dash?” He found himself asking, though he assumed she was, given her rainbow mane.
“Oh so you’ve heard of me, what are you a fan?” She replied, posing for a moment, as she landed. “I’m the most radical, most cool, most awesome pony in all of Equestria...and yes there is a difference in awesome, radical and cool.” She said quickly, before clearing her throat to continue. “The best flier in all of ponydom...Rainbow Dash.”
James stared, bewildered at her sheer awesomeness, when suddenly a thought struck him. “Wait theres a difference between awesome, cool and radical?”
“Well yeah duh, of course there is.” She said with a smile. “You’re looking at the perfect combination of all three.” Rainbow was suddenly wearing a pair of, undeniably cool, sunglasses. “Oh yeah who’s the pony.”
“Well its uh...its uh nice to meet you Rainbow Dash...I’m James.” James found himself slightly caught off guard by the sudden appearance of Rainbow’s sunglasses. How did she...but I was looking at her the whole time? He thought for a moment, before regaining his composure at hearing Rainbow speak.
“Nice to meet you too.” She said with a smile, the sunglasses no longer anywhere to be seen. “So Aj says you’re new around here, said you wanted to be shown around. Thought you could use the RBD tour.” Rainbow said with a laugh.
“Uh yeah...yeah that’s it exactly.” James said, with a nervous laugh. How does she keep doing that with the sunglasses?
“Well what are we waiting for? Lets dash!” Rainbow exclaimed, soaring off towards the center of Ponyville. Rainbow had just reached town hall, when she stopped and turned around. “So Ja...uh James...where you at?” She said, surprised that the fellow pegasi was nowhere around. “What the hay?” She mumbled, speeding back towards the tree she’d found James at, only to find the brown pegasus standing there.
“Wow you’re fast!” James shouted, a smile broad across his face.
“Yeah I know, I’m great.” She said, taking a few moments to bask in James’ admiration. “So yeah James, why didn’t you follow me?”
“Well you just kinda flew off, how was I supposed to know where you were going?” James answered, putting a hoof to his chin, as he sat down. “I mean I couldn’t see you, and I can’t really run that fast...even if my legs were healed.” James’ answer took a minute to sink in, but soon the cyan mare found herself realizing, he hadn’t even mentioned anything about flying after her.
“Are your wings hurt too? I kinda just assumed you’d fly after me.” Rainbow saw the sudden change in James’ demeanor, after she’d mention him flying. “Hey are you alright?” She asked, feeling like she’d said something to upset him.
“...I...I can’t fly.” He squeaked after a moment.
“Excuse me, but what?” Rainbow asked suddenly, casting an odd gaze at the brown colt. “What do you mean you can’t fly, you’re like what twenty two, three maybe?”
“Actually I’m twenty five.” He said before pausing. “So I’m guessing its safe to say Applejack didn’t tell you huh?” James questioned. He knew Applejack wasn’t to blame, she had seemed to be in a hurry to get home. She probably just forgot in her haste. James thought with a nod.
“No, she most definitely didn’t tell me you couldn’t fly...but I mean how? Did you not go to flight camp?”
“Okay look...I know this might be hard to believe...but I have no idea what you’re talking about.” James said. Noticing the confused look on her face, James decided now would be as good a time as any, to tell the cyan pegasus his story. He started at the beginning. Waking up in the forest, wandering for three days, crashing into Aj’s barn. He made sure to explain it all, just as he remembered it, before he began explaining todays earlier events. “And that’s how we now find ourselves in this current moment of time.” He said with a quick sigh of relief, all too glad his story was finished in its telling.
“Amnesia huh, sounds heavy.” Rainbow commented from her perch. During his rendition of his story, Rainbow had snatched a comfy looking cloud that floated by, and now laid across it.
“Yes I suppose, I don’t really know...its just like...a piece is missing. No not even that. Everything just has this sense of distant familiarity to me....you know what I mean?” James asked, not sure if Rainbow had dozed off on her cloud, or not.
“I have no idea dude, sounds to me like you’re talking some pretty big egghead talk. You should go talk to Twilight, she’d probably get a kick out of it.” She said through a yawn. “But I do know one thing.” She said suddenly, holding a hoof up to the air.
“Oh, and what would that be?” James asked. Admittedly he was a bit irked by the egghead comment, but he would let it slide...for now.
“I;m gonna teach you how to fly...well once those cuts on your wings heal up enough.” Rainbow looked down from her cloud perch, and smiled.
“Really...you mean...I’m gonna fly?” James immediately found himself drifting off into fantasy. Thoughts of himself flying through the sky, looking down at the world why he soared high above it, he could sleep on a cloud. He couldn’t help but let out a, “yes,” as he jumped up and danced around happily.
Usually Rainbow would look at anypony dancing around like that, and call them out on how uncool they were being. She however, couldn’t bring herself to ruin the moment for James, after all he’d never flown before. “Well I think I’m gonna call it a day.” Rainbow commented with a yawn. “I’ll stop by Apple Acres sometime so we can figure out when to start...Rainbow Dash’s totally rad flight camp.” She said with a smile, when she caught sight of Applejack approaching.
“Howdy y’all.” Applejack called. Stopping to stand next to James. “Ah hope you two got along alright.” She said with a smile.
“Yo Aj you could have told me James here couldn’t fly. I could have spent the day showing him some moves.” Rainbow called down from her resting place.
“Yeah ah guess I could’ve mentioned that, but I figured it wasn’t any of my business to tell ya.” She said with a reaffirming nod. “Anyways, it seems like James told you.”
“Yeah well, it still would have been nice to know.” Rainbow replied. Suddenly she sank through the cloud, twisting her body in mid-air just in time to land hooves first on the ground. “Anyways, like I just told James, I’ll stop by the orchard sometime. I can’t let a pegasus his age go on not knowing how to fly, but for today...I’m spent.” Rainbow turned from the other two, spreading her wings out. “Catch you guys later, its time to Dash.” With that Rainbow soared into the sky, leaving James and Aj behind.
“Ah swear that pony never changes.” Applejack said with a chuckle. “So you ready to head back to the house?” Applejack asked, turning to look at James, who answered with a nod.
James and Applejack made there way back to Apple Acres, James telling her about all that he and Rainbow discussed, and Applejack listening politely to every word. Once they reached their destination, they quickly washed up. Well after Applejack showed James where he could do so. Once done they joined the rest of the Apple clan in the kitchen. Just as the case had been with breakfast, James found himself treated to a extensive spread of apple based dishes, which he topped off with some amazing Apple family cider. James smiled and laughed with the family. He listened to Applebloom’s story of her latest escapades with the Cutie Mark Crusaders...whatever that was, as well as Granny Smith’s story of how things were in her day. Big Mac, well he didn't say much, which James thought was a recurring theme with the large, red stallion. With dinner finished James once again helped with the cleaning of the dishes, and thanked the Apple family one by one for their kindness, as he wished them good night.
“Hey you alright James?” Applejack called from the doorway of his room. She had been on her way down the hall to her own, when she saw his door was open, and noticed him sitting by the window. What in tarnation is he doing? She thought, as she watched him staring up at the moon, a small smile on his lips.
“Hey Applejack...can I ask you a question?” He called.
“Yeah, what’s on your mind?” She asked. Stepping into the room, she sat down on the floor next to him, joining him in gazing at the moon.
“You ever stare up at the moon, and wonder if somepony out there is staring at that exact same moon...just like you are?”
“Well I’d say there are plenty of ponies staring up at the moon right now.” She replied.
“Yeah I know.” James said with a chuckle. “You know what I think I’m gonna get some sleep, good night Applejack.”
“G’night James.” Applejack said, making her way to the door.
“Oh and Applejack...thank you.”
Applejack just smiled. “Your welcome.” She replied, before closing his door.
James sat there for a few more moments, admittedly enjoying the silence of the night, his gaze still fixed on the giant silver orb in the sky. “G’night.” He whispered, finally turning from his window, and climbing into bed.
“Good night James.” Luna whispered. She was sitting on a hill, overlooking Apple Acres. From her seat she could see into James room perfectly, while still remaining hidden from his view.
Sweet dreams my friend. You don’t even realize it...but seeing you like this...seeing you enjoy life again. She paused. A smile was present, as a tear rolled down her cheek. This is something that I thought I’d never see. Luna’s horn began to glow, the aura of her magic lighting James’ room with a blue hue, as his blanket covered him. She giggled softly as she watched him roll over, cuddling one of his pillows tightly, with a smile. “I’ll see you later.” She whispered, and then suddenly...she was gone.

Celestia allowed a soft sigh to escape her as she stared up at the night sky. How long had she waited for her sister, after discovering her chambers empty, where had she gone for that matter? The princess of the sun couldn't help but wonder, wonder if her sisters absence was because of that Pegasus. What was he to her? How did she even know a human? Celestia found herself thinking. Another, more frustrated, sigh emitted from Celestia. She tapped a fore hoof against the ground impatiently, her thoughts seemingly only bringing about more questions. Really what was she thinking!? Celestia found herself thinking. The questions that formed, soon made way for aggravation, and irritation.
"Sister, what brings you to my chamber so late?" Luna had seemingly appeared beside her sister. Though truth be told, Celestia was to rapt in thought to notice that, her sister had simply walked in through the door.
"Luna, where have you been," Celestia asked. Her voice was a mixture of surprise, and still lingering emotions from her thoughts.
"Where have I been?" Luna was taken back by the sudden questioning. "I've been out," she replied calmly.
Celestia's gaze narrowed, her eyes focused on her sister. "You were out...that's it huh? Sure you weren't out with a certain mysterious Pegasus?"
Luna returned her sisters gaze, preparing to defend herself, before sighing deeply. "Alright fine," she huffed. Luna moved past her sister to step out onto the balcony. A smile graced her lips, as the cool air of her night met with the heat of her body. "I went to check on James," she said. Her gaze feel upon the moon, as she looked to the heavens, thinking of the question she'd heard James ask Applejack.
Celestia shook her head, as she stepped out onto the balcony, taking a spot by her sister. "So are you ready to tell me about him," she asked. Even though she was frustrated by the whole situation, she knew Luna must have her reasons for bringing him to Equestria. "I mean you didn't even consult me, you just brought a human here...into our world."
“Do you ever wonder dear sister,” She spoke. Luna paused for a moment, taking a deep breathe. “Do you ever find yourself gazing at the moon, wondering if somepony out there is staring at the moon just like you are?” Luna trailed off after she spoke, wondering how foolish she must sound to her sister.
Celestia smiled, turning to gaze at the moon, a small sigh escaping her. “He must be important to you,” she said. Her voice was kind as she spoke, knowing full well the answer to her question.
Luna nodded, her eyes never straying from the silvered moon, as her sister spoke. “He is, very much so.” Her gaze finally turned from the night sky, now focusing softly on her sister. “I suppose you’d like me to start at the beginning,” she asked.
“I would indeed,” she said. Celestia nodded to her sister, a loving smile ever present on her face, as she waited for Luna to begin.
“Well it all began when James was twelve.” Luna began her story. Recalling the first time she saw James. He was alone, and so sad. She had not been long removed from her one thousand year banishment, and another late night spent alone lead her to the library. Luna had found this to be a place she would find herself often. Spending many a lonely night, lost within the pages of the books, until she had to lower the moon. “I found a very odd book the night I first met James,” She said. “The look of the old leather bound covering, the gold trimmed lettering, and the words dictionarii hominum.”
“The Dictionary Of Humans?” Celestia looked to her sister, as she spoke, eyes full of disbelief. She herself had found, and red, the very same book centuries ago. She had believed the information within it to be to dangerous, and had hidden it deep within the catalogs of the library.
“Yes.” Luna nodded, replying simply, to her sister. “I red its pages, and found out many things,” she paused. “Did you even know there’s a spell that can connect our world with the humans?”
“Luna! That’s a forbidden spell.” Celestia couldn’t believe it, but that would explain how she’d met James.
“Yes well now that you know the how, perhaps you’d like to know the why?” She could still remember it like it’d just happened. She’d used the spell she found to open a doorway, a doorway to the human world, a doorway to James.
“So you got bored, opened a connection between two worlds, and used a forbidden spell to open said connection?” Celestia was more than a bit confused. How had she missed this, how had she not felt the surge of magic Luna surely created by the spells casting alone.
“Well to put it simply, yes,” Luna answered. “I crossed into James’ world. I found myself surrounded by unknown sights, and sounds. I panicked at the sheer sensory overload, and flew off,’ she paused. “I just kept going, until I finally found myself out of breath. I sat down atop a hill near a few small homes, trying to collect my thoughts, when I saw him.” Luna paused, and turned back towards the sky. “He was just sitting there, so sad, so alone.”
Celestia could hear the sadness in Luna’s voice, she could see the tears forming in her eyes. “Are you alright,” She asked.
“Yes.” Luna sighed, closing her eyes, a smile smile at her lips. She remembered his shock at her sudden appearance outside his window. How he marveled at her, and went on and on with questions, once he worked up the courage to speak. “You know at first he didn’t know what to do or say, he just sat there like a statue, while i just stood there at his window.” She turned to her sister, a gentle smile on her face. “But you better believe once he started talking, he just wouldn’t stop.” Luna laughed, as she envisioned his face.
“So you found a friend in the boy, at a time when you thought you had none.” Celestia could understand why her sister had sought friendship in the boy. He wasn’t from Equestria, he had no idea who or even what Luna was, and he didn’t know of her past. “Sister, I wish to hear more of your time together with James, but first why did you bring him here,” She asked.
“I...I left one night, and went to see James,” she began. “He was seventeen, and we’d gotten close, I was like a big sister to him. He would always wait by the window, every night, just so he could watch for me. When I would arrive he’d tell me all about his day, what he’d done, and if anything was bothering him.” Luna sighed as she spoke, she almost couldn’t bring herself to speak the next words. “That night though, James didn’t wait...he wasn’t even in his room...so I left...I thought, he’ll be back tomorrow...but he wasn’t.” She could remember how she’d longed to see her friend, how her nights once again became empty. “I returned every night, for a week straight, only to find his room vacant. When I left the seventh night, I did not return.”
Celestia stared at her sister. Her eyes kind, and showing a slight sadness. “I’m sorry Luna. I’m sure you felt as if you’d lost your only friend.”
“I did...but my leaving had a heavier price than my own sadness.” Luna could feel a lump beginning to build in her throat, and tears pool once again. “I should have went back sooner,” she said. “I left him all alone for eight years.”
“But how?” Celestia asked suddenly, pondering her sisters words. “You haven’t even been returned from your banishment for eight years, yet you say you’ve known James for almost thirteen.”
“Time is greatly different between our worlds sister. One complete year in our world, is almost three in the humans.”
“Interesting...,” Celestia was deep in thought now. She was going through many a hypothesis as to how such an anomaly in space, and time could occur. She was quickly removed from her thoughts though, as she looked upon the face of her sister, noticing Luna’s sullen demeanor. “Are you alright,” she asked.
“I found him...,” she whispered.
“You found who,” Celestia asked.
I found James...The night I brought him here...” Luna was trying desperately to hold back her emotions, though she found it not to be an easy thing to do, as she spoke. “I hadn’t seen James for eight years, but I suddenly found myself wanting to see him...I wanted to see my friend one more time.” She shuddered at those words. One...Last...Time. She relived that moment of finding James in his bathroom, over and over again. The blood stained floor, James sitting there looking so at peace...”I found him in his bathroom...he was...he was just sitting there waiting to die.”
Celestia’s eyes widened. What is she trying to say, did he...did he try to...kill himself? She thought.
“I couldn’t just let him die, not after having left him all alone for so long...I just couldn’t let him, “ Luna sobbed. Her chest heaved, as she fought to speak through gasps of air and tears.
Celestia moved to her sister’s side, wrapping her forelegs around her tightly in a loving embrace. “Shhh, its okay Luna...I understand.”The sisters sat there, Luna crying, Celestia simply comforting her. “Luna...That’s enough for tonight...but...perhaps I can hear more about James later,” she asked.
Luna simply nodded, freeing herself from Celestia’s embrace, slowly rising to stand once again. “I promise I’ll tell you more, just know...I had my reasons to bring James here.”
“I can see that now, but as I said, I still want to know more though.” Celestia smiled down at her sister, standing at her side as they turned, and walked in from the balcony.
Luna slowly made her way to her bed, and stretched as she laid across it. “I wish I could go see him, talk to him, smile with him just like before.”
“Why can’t you,” Celestia asked. She moved to the other side of the bed, and sat on its edge.
“I...I...I just can’t.” Luna finally said, looking rather disappointed by her own words. “There is a reason, but as I said, I will tell you about it later.” The princess of the night let out an exhausted yawn, as she felt her eyelids grow heavy.
Celestia let out a small laugh, and stood from Luna’s bed. “Sleep dear sister, I will wake you when it is time to lower the moon.”
“Thank you,” Luna whispered. She smiled as she closed her eyes, a sigh escaping her, and soon she was lost to sleep.
Celestia just stood there, looking over her sister for a moment, before taking her leave. The halls of the castle were still, and bare. No sound echoed throughout, no sound but her own hoof steps. Was his life as a human really so bad...that...he tried to kill himself? She thought, as she made her way to her own personal chambers. Celestia let out a frustrated sigh, closing the door behind her. I suppose there is more to James than I thought...at least with his history with Luna. I will let things be for now, but I will still keep an eye on him...for Luna’s sake at least. With those final thoughts, Celestia moved onto her bed to rest, allowing the sweet embrace of sleep to take hold.

Chapter 5: Ephemeral.
Why...why did this happen? The boy thought, sitting in the corner of his dark room. Why did you guys have to leave me? Tears slowly streamed down his face. He looked down at the picture he held, keeping it close, his thoughts raging. Is...is this..all my fault? He gazed upon the warm smiles of his parents forever captured in the photo he cherished, forever ingrained into his heart.
He closed his eyes, thinking back to that day, his parents had dropped him off at school. The way his mom smiled, and waved goodbye. No don’t say goodbye! His father, as always, smiling that goofy smile of his. I want to see you guys again! They drove off, and he was sure they’d be back, he knew they’d be back. He recalled watching them leave, before he went into school. It was one, no two hours...before the principal came and pulled me from class. He could still remember everything so clearly, everything seemed to be forever held, in his mind.
“James.” His principal had said, in a kind voice, once they were in his office. “I have something to tell you okay,” he had asked. James simply nodded in reply, not knowing why he was there, not knowing if he was in trouble. I wish I would have just been in trouble. He sighed as he thought about it all.
“It seems that your parents have been involved in an accident.” He said it so calmly that James almost didn’t believe it, or maybe it just didn’t register. This is all some kinda joke right? He had to be joking. “Seeing as you have no immediate family aside from your parents, someone from the hospital they’re at will be coming along shortly to pick you up...I’m sorry James.”
James sat there, his mouth agape, in disbelief. Just as his principal had said, someone from the hospital picked him up from school. He sat there in the cold sterile waiting room. The sounds of beeping machines, and shuffling feet all around him, overpowering his own soft breaths. He tightly held onto a tattered teddy bear, the bear his dad had won for him.
“I’m sorry but they’re both in very critical condition, I’m afraid I can’t let the boy see them.” That’s what one of the nurses had said. I couldn’t even see you guys...I couldn’t even say goodbye.”
James sat the picture at his side, as he cupped his face, and sobbed. I was only eight. He thought, not wishing to recall the rest. Even now...even after four years...I miss you guys so much. James tried, and failed, to wipe his face clean of the tears he continued to shed. I’ve already been through five different families...none of them wanted me. His eyes were swollen now from crying, and they burned from the tears. They all start out the same. He thought. Oh such a charming boy, of course we’ll take care of him. A sigh escaped James as he thought. He had been able to calm himself, if ever so slightly, and think about the families he’d lived with. They were all nice to me, but I just can’t let go of you guys...and they knew that...they knew I’d never call them mom or dad.
He wiped away a few more tears, as he reached down beside him, and picked the picture of his parents back up. All the families had different reasons for giving me up, but really...they just didn’t want a kid that clung to his dead parents. James sighed, he stared at the picture longingly, thinking about the memories he had of them. I miss you guys...I want to see you again...just one more time. He thought, tears starting to pool at the corner of his eyes, once again.

“MORNIN’ JAMES!” Shouted Apple Bloom, as she burst in through the door of his room.
“AHHHHH!” James shouted. He sprung up from his bed, landing surprisingly gracefully on all hooves ready to bolt, when he noticed the small filly. “Oh Apple Bloom its just you,” he said with a relieved sigh. “How many times are you gonna burst in here, and almost scare me to death,” he asked, to which the filly only smiled.
“Well lets see here.” Apple Bloom turned her head up in thought mouthing a few words, too quietly for James to hear. “Ah reckon about three more days.” The young filly replied with a beaming smile.
“So that’s when Aj is getting back huh,” James asked.
“Eeyup.” Apple Bloom said, with her very best impression of Big Mac. “The rodeo lasts for two more days. Then it’s a days train ride back from Appleloosa.”
“Oh okay.” James’s eyebrow twitched as he replied. She’s done this for the last four days. He thought. I still don’t know why Aj wouldn't take me with her?
Four Days Earlier:
“Ah’m sorry James, but I can’t take you with me.” Applejack bustled about quickly, making sure she’d packed everything she’d be needing for the trip.
“Why not? I’d really like to see Appleloosa, well and...I’d like to see you compete,” he said, his cheeks slowly becoming red with blush.
Applejack let out a soft laugh, covering her mouth to hide her smile. “Now Ah know you wanna go, but Appleloosa ain’t like Ponyville. There’s a heap more ponies, and Ah don’t want you getting spooked by the crowds at the rodeo.”
“Aw, but what am I supposed to do while you’re gone,” James had asked.
“Well Rainbow Dash is supposed to be giving you flying lessons,” Aj said, throwing an extra rope in her saddle bags. “So you’ll have Rainbow Dash to hang out with, not to mention Big Mac, and Apple Bloom. Why Ah’m sure you’ll have plenty of things to do.” Applejack smiled, as she patted James on his back.
“Yeah I guess you’re right,” he said with a false smile. “Just make sure you come back with a story or two to share, okay?” James let out a soft laugh as he spoke.
“Hey James, you listening to me!?” Apple Bloom had jumped up onto James’s bed, while he’d slipped into thought, now standing face to face with the brown pegasus.
“Huh,” James answered. “What were you saying Apple Bloom? Sorry but I kinda drifted off there.” James let out an embarrassed chuckle, scratching the back of his head with a forehoof, as he stared back at the slightly annoyed young filly.
“Ah was just sayin’,” she began. “Granny Smith has breakfast all ready, but if’n you don’t wanna eat, I guess I can just eat yours.” She had a somewhat evil grin spread across her face as she spoke of eating James’s breakfast, and honestly James didn’t know which shocked him more....the grin...or the thought of not eating breakfast.
“Wait a second there Apple Bloom, lets not be hasty, how about we just go eat some breakfast,” James replied quickly. He turned from Apple Bloom, and began walking to his door, when he felt something jump on his back.
“YEEHAW! Giddy-up pegasus!” Apple Bloom smiled as she sat on his back, holding on to his dark brown mane for stability.
Are you serious? James thought, when he looked over his shoulder to the little filly, and smiled. “How about I’ll give you a pony-back ride.” he asked. “But no more of this giddy-up stuff, alright?” James had one eyebrow arched as he stared at her, a somewhat annoyed yet, a happy smile on his face.
“Deal.” she shouted. “Now onward, to breakfast!”
James had to admit she had spirit, perhaps a bit too much at times, but never the less spirit. “Alright, alright, lets go.” James couldn’t help but smile as he headed out of his room. I really do enjoy this. He thought.
James had spent the greater part of the last four days, since Applejacks leaving, getting better acquainted with the rest of his Apple family roommates. The first day he’d tried to help out Big Mac with some of the farm work but quickly found that pulling a plow, or applebucking, was best left to the big guy. Instead James had settled with carrying apple bushels back to the barn, sorting out the good from the bad, and running the cider press. Needless to say by the end of day one, James was more than tired, he was sore as hell. The more he thought about it, the more he’d wished he hadn’t jump right into farm work so soon, the greater his still recovering legs ached. The day had been...a learning experience, to say the least.
Day two was a bit different, except for the soreness and the exhaustion. Rainbow Dash had showed up bright and early that morning, she had even joined James and the Apples’ for breakfast. She had worked things out to get out of her shift for the weather team, which James would later find out meant she had just not went in for the day. Once breakfast was over James cleaned up,with the help of an all too insistent, yet easily bored cyan pegasus. The cyan pegasus in question then proceeded to, what some would call forcibly, drag James out to the fields for a flying lesson. The rest of the day was spent with Rainbow showing James the basics of flying. Which resulted in many a failed attempt, and many faceplants, by the brown pegasus she called her “student”. Eventually James was able to successfully hover a few inches off the ground, but anything else was nothing more than dream for his current skill level. The day ended with Rainbow surprisingly happy with his...simple progress, saying that some progress is better than no progress.
Thankfully day three was a bit more simple...yeah simple. James had spent that whole day pretty much inside, trying to recover from the first two days, but instead spent the better part of it helping Granny Smith. He had to admit he still wasn’t all too sure what he’d helped her with exactly, and he still had no clue why Granny Smith had insisted he wear a giant chicken costume, when they were only supposed to be making dinner. The rest of day three was spent reading, and laying about...after...the chicken suit fiasco, which ended with James covered head to hoof in apple sauce.
Day four was by far the easiest, even though it was spent with Apple Bloom, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Apple Bloom had burst into his room that morning, accompanied by an orange pegasus, and a white unicorn. They both seemed to be Apple Bloom’s age, and they all shared something in common with James...they didn’t have cutie marks. James really hadn’t given it much thought, nor had he really noticed until the three filly’s brought it up, but everypony in ponyville had one of those cutie marks. Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, and Apple Bloom...or as they emphatically called themselves “The Cutie Mark Crusaders” explained the strange marks to him...or at least the best they could. James spent the day with them, laughing at the odd situations they found themselves in, while trying to obtain their cutie marks. They even managed to drag James into a few, which lead to him receiving more than a couple “lectures” from a few ponies in town, telling him he should know better, and that he should be setting an example for the young filly’s instead of encouraging them. The day ended with James becoming an official member of the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
“Look he’s doing it again,” Apple Bloom shouted, from her seat next to Granny Smith. “You reckon somethings wrong with him?”
The next thing James knew, he was brought out of his daze, by a swift bop on his head. “Ow.” He shouted, his forehoofs quickly covering his head out of instinct, when he turned his head to stare at Big Mac.
“Nope.” The red stallion said simply to Apple Bloom, before standing from the table, and putting his plate next to the sink.
“What was that for Big Mac,” James asked.
“He was just making sure you was alright,” Apple Bloom said, quickly finishing her flapjacks. “You’ve barely touched your breakfast...just been sitting there staring off into space.”
“Oh..I..Uh sorry, I was just thinking,” James replied quietly, a hint of embarrassment in his voice. James smiled after a moment, before digging into his breakfast, finishing it rather quickly and standing.
“Where you heading to in such a hurry James?” Granny Smith was standing by the sink, washing her plate, as she called to James.
“Oh well nowhere really, thought about heading into town for a little bit.” James sat his plate on top of Big Mac’s, offering Granny Smith a smile as he spoke.
“Well if that’s the case, you mind walking half-pint here to school?”
“Ah don’t need anypony to walk me to school Granny,” Apple Bloom replied curtly, causing Granny Smith to cast her an uncharastically stern look.
“I don’t mind, really it would be my pleasure,” James chimed in quickly, a nervous smile on his face. I didn’t think Granny Smith knew how to sound like that...let alone make that serious of a face. He thought.
“Well then you two scoot, Ah got a kitchen to clean an the...zZzZzZz.”
“Wow did she really just fall asleep standing there,” James asked. He had seen her fall asleep mid sentence before, but never standing in the kitchen.
“Yeah she does that from time to time,” Apple Bloom said. “So you really don’t mind to walk me to school,” She asked with a smile.
“Nah I don’t mind, now come on, we don’t want you to be late.” James turned from the sink, and the sleeping elderly mare, when he felt the all too familiar weight of Apple Bloom on his back. James just shook his head, turning to look at Big Mac, who was trying to figure out what to do about Granny Smith. “Well, I’ll see you later Big Mac.”
“Eeyup,” Big Mac replied, trying to decided if he should bring Granny’s rocker in the kitchen.
“Yeah Ah’ll see you later too.” The young filly called from atop James’s back. Waving to her older brother, as they made their way out of the kitchen.
“So I guess you’re gonna just stay up there until you get to school,” James asked, knowing full well Apple Bloom’s answer, which was confirmed by her smile. “Alright, well lets go.”
James, or perhaps the Pegasus Express was a more fitting name, made his way out the door. Apple Bloom simply smiled, and hummed what she dubbed the CMC theme song, as she sat contently on his back. They made their way down through the orchard, following the very same path Applejack had lead James down on his first trip to Ponyville, enjoying the warm sunshine.
“So James can I ask you somethin?” Apple Bloom asked after a few minutes, leaning forward as she spoke, careful not to put any weight on James’s wings.
“Yeah sure,” James replied, as he saw Ponyville slowly come into view.
“Ah know you’re new here and all, and that you ain’t got no memories...but doesn’t it bother you that you don’t got a cutie mark?”
James continued walking, though his mind was now searching for an answer for the young filly. “Well...not really.” He answered after a few moments thought. “Up until you and the other Cutie Mark Crusaders’ brought it up, I’d never really thought about it. Even now I don’t really think about it, I mean it’s kinda hard to think about something I’ve never had.” James shot Apple Bloom a quick smile over his shoulder. “Plus if I had one, I wouldn’t be a Cutie Mark Crusader...would I?”
“No...I guess you wouldn’t, but still...don’t you wonder what your special talent is,” she asked in response.
“Hey I got no problem not knowing my special talent, it just means I’m good at something, and I’ll be all the happier when I find it out.” James stopped after he spoke, looking over his shoulder to Apple Bloom. “Well, this is your stop.”
Apple Bloom climbed down from James’s back, and walked around to stand in front of him. “Thanks James.” She said with a smile, before she turned and ran off towards Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, who waited happily for her in the schoolyard.
James waved goodbye to the girls, and headed off down the cobblestone path into town. I’ve had a good couple days. He thought with a smile. James passed through the market, stopping here and there, inspecting the stalls that he passed. Life here was simply, it was easy, and beautiful. The ponies hustled and bustled about, voices rang out drawing customers to stalls, and everything was so serene. James could feel a sort of peace blanket him, a peace he felt like he’d craved for a long time...even though he didn’t really know why. Come to think of it...I’ve felt this way...ever since that one night. He thought back to the day he’d met Rainbow Dash, and how that night he’d felt the urge to just stare up at the moon...as if waiting for something. Ever since then, he couldn’t shake the feeling of something...like an unseen presence watching him. He really couldn’t describe it, and he really didn’t want to, but he did know one thing. Whatever this thing was, it brought him peace.
James was lost in thought once again, as he continued to walk down the street. The cobblestone clicking lightly beneath his hooves. I’ve only been here for about a week...but this place feels like home. He thought, when he was hit by a sobering thought. I don’t even know where home is. He hung his head, thinking about his sudden realization, when he was forced back into reality...once again. This time it wasn’t a quick knock to his noggin that jolted him, but a head on collision with a white mare.
“Oh my I’m so sorry, here let me help you up,” she said. James was about to protest, when he became enveloped by a light blue aura, and sat back on his hooves. “I’m so sorry darling, are you alright?”
James quickly inspected himself, knocking a bit of dirt from one of his wings, before turning his attention to the pony he’d run into. “Uh, yeah I’m fine.” He had to admit, he was a bit lost for words. Wow. He thought staring into a pair of sapphire eyes, partially hidden by a beautifully kept purple mane, that only accentuated her marshmallow coat.
“Well that’s good.” She flipped her mane as she spoke, with a refined accent, very much unlike that of Applejack and Rainbow Dash’s. “Well this is odd, I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of meeting?”
James was speechless for a moment, before he suddenly realized she was speaking. Man I really need to stop zoning out. He thought, before smiling. “Actually I’m new in town, I’ve only been here for about a week. My name is James.”
“Well it’s a pleasure James,” she said with a smile. “I’m Rarity, proprietor of Carousel Boutique, where everything is chic, unique, and magnifique.”
“What’s that?” James was admittedly a bit confused.
Rarity let out an astonished gasp, dramatically placing the back of one of her forehooves to her forehead. “Darling! Are you saying you’ve never heard of The Carousel Boutique?”
“Yeah...but like I said I’m new here so.” James stood there silently as he watched Rarity. Did I upset her?
“No, no, no this will never do,” Rarity said quickly. Her horn began to glow a faint blue, the same faint blue that had enveloped James earlier, as she levitated a planner from her saddle bag. “Now let me see here...,” she began.
“Hey, how are you doing that?” James was more than a bit entranced by the spectacle before him. How is she doing that? He thought, before noticing Rarity’s stare.
“This is magic darling, surely you know that,” She asked, casting James an odd look.
“Nope sorry, I didn’t know that...I mean I’ve passed by and seen other unicorns using magic...but I never actually knew it was magic.” James had to admit to himself, he must sound like some looney that crawled out from under a rock. Applejack had explained to him the three different kinds of ponies in Equestria. He knew that Rainbow Dash and himself were Pegasi, and that Applejack and her family were considered Earth Ponies...but he’d yet to meet a Unicorn...well until now that is.
“My word, I don’t mean to sound rude darling, but where exactly are you from?” She looked confused. He looks to be in his early twenties...and yet he hasn’t heard of The Carousel Boutique, or magic? She thought, before returning the planner to her saddle bag.
“Well, that’s a bit hard to explain.” James trailed off with a nervous laugh, his face turning red with embarrassment, unable to answer Rarity’s question. “In fact, it would take a while to explain.”
Rarity studied James for a moment, before she smiled and let out a soft laugh. “Wonderful,” she said, causing James to give her a confused look. “I was just checking my planner, and fortunate for you I have some free time today. How about I show you my shop, and you can tell me about yourself?’
James nodded in reply wondering how such a refined, and more than likely rational pony, would take his somewhat irrational story. “Sounds like a plan Miss Rarity,” he said after a moment.
Rarity covered her mouth as she laughed softly, waving her hoof playfully. “Now, now darling there's no need for such formality between friends.”
“Yeah your ri...wait friends?”
“Why of course, I wouldn’t just invite anyone into The Boutique,” she said with a smile. “Now shall we?”
James walked beside Rarity as they walked through town, James telling her his story, and Rarity responding with the occasional gasp or exaggerated statement. Soon they came upon Rarity’s home, and place of business, Carousel Boutique. Once inside, Rarity gave James a bit of a tour, taking the opportunity to show off a few of her latest creations. After she had her fill of showboating, Rarity lead James into the kitchen, where she had him sit at the table while she prepared some tea.
“Well James I honestly don’t know how you’re coping with all you’re going through, I mean to have no memories, and to find yourself in a strange place.” Rarity paused, taking a delicate sip of her tea, thinking over James’s story.
“Well I will admit the first few days were a bit rough, but since the Apple family has taken me in, and I’ve become friends with Applejack and Rainbow Dash it’s not so bad.” James sat silently in thought for a moment, staring down at the cup of tea between his hooves. “Having friends makes it a lot easier, and besides...” James paused letting out a soft sigh.
“Besides what darling, you know it’s not nice to keep a lady waiting,” Rarity said.
“Besides,” James said with a sigh. “If I can’t get back my memories, then I guess they weren’t worth remembering...so I’ll just make new ones.”
“Well that’s very touching, but I must correct you on one thing.”
“Oh and what would that be,” James asked, his brow raised in curiosity.
“I’m your friend as well, and you are always welcome at Carousel Boutique darling.” Her smile was pure, and kind. James couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle, a smile quickly spreading across his face as he did.
“Well I thank you,” he said, before taking another sip of his tea.
James sat at the boutique, talking to Rarity, for what seemed like hours before he finally stood from the table. He thanked Rarity for the tea, as well as the company, not to mention her friendship. They briefly discussed plans for lunch the next day, in which Rarity added in possibly taking James to the spa. After they had made their plans James bid Rarity farewell, so that she could begin work on a new dress for some noble pony.
“Goodbye James, don’t forget about lunch and the spa tomorrow.” Rarity called from the doorway.
“I won’t forget.” James called back, thinking that he’d figure out how to get out of the spa later.
James made his way back through Ponyville, heading towards Sweet Apple Acres. The sun was beginning to set on the horizon, and the sky was covered by the beautiful orange glow of the setting sun, as it made way for the moon. James knew that undoubtedly Apple Bloom had made her way home, but still he passed by the school, just to be sure. He walked the path he’d come to know very well, and almost let out a sigh of comfort as the cobblestone gave way to dirt. Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity...plus Aj’s family, and The Cutie Mark Crusaders...seems like I’m getting some pretty good friends. James thought, as he caught sight of the first silver rays of the moon. He smiled, feeling the sense of warmth that d welled within him all day grow. Maybe not having any memories isn't so bad...and like I've said...I can always make new ones.

“I’m so proud of you my friend.” Luna whispered, as she hovered in the sky, just out of sight. “It seems like bringing you here was the right choice, then again...it was the only choice.”
Luna landed gracefully on the hill she’d come to sit at every night, so that she could wish James goodnight. She would sit there patiently each and every night, as James would eat dinner with the Apples’, then wash up. She would smile and think of the times they laughed together, as she’d see him step into his room, and nearly cry as she watched him set by the window and stare up into the moon. I guess old habits are hard to break. She thought as the cycle repeated itself, and she watched James walk into his room, and sit by the window.
My dear friend, I wish I could show myself...I wish that I could appear...so you’d no longer have to sit and wait for me. She thought, tears forming at the corners of her eyes.
Luna watched with a smile, brushing away her tears, as James climbed up into bed. Knowing you’re safe and happy though, makes everything better though. Luna chuckled softly as she watched James kick his covers off in his sleep. “You always did have an issue with blankets... didn't you?” She cooed softly, speaking to herself, knowing that James couldn't hear her. She did as she had many nights before, and her horn began glowing, as she used her magic to pull James’s blankets back over him. She was delighted by the small smile that graced his lips at the sudden warmth of the blankets, and yet...she felt empty.
“One day my friend...one day you and I will meet again...I promise.” Luna stood, slowly from her spot on the hill, casting one more glance into James’s room. “I’m always with you.” She whispered before spreading her wings, and taking flight once more, vanishing into the dark of the night sky.

Chapter 6: Of Sapphire Eye’s & Fluttershy’s.
For the times we wander, we shall forever walk side by side. The earth beneath, beguiled by the silver allure of Luna, while Solis blesses those who falter to her sisters charms. I will forever wait, for the day that you and I shall be reunited. For the times we wander, we shall forever walk side by side, or path guided by Sol et Luna. “Lunae lucem orationem.” Luna whispered to herself, watching the last of her moons beauty fade, as her sisters sun slowly rose in it’s place.
“Ah Lunae lucem orationem...I haven’t heard it in centuries, what made you think of it?” Celestia asked, as she sat next to her sister, watching the rays of her sun stretch out across their kingdom.
“I don’t know really, it just came to me suddenly,” Luna replied. She smiled as she spoke, turning her gaze to rest upon her sister. “Has it really been centuries,” she asked suddenly.
“I believe so, though I couldn’t give you an exact date.” Celestia smiled, closing her eyes, as she inhaled deeply the early morning air. “Will you be returning to your chambers now...Lulu?” Her smile took on a mischievous look, as she called Luna by her childhood nickname. Knowing full well how her sister despised it.
“I had thought about joining you for breakfast, Cele, but I’m not so sure about it now,” Luna replied. She shot Celestia her own mischievous grin, as she saw the look on her sisters face.
“Well, well, well...Lulu, when did your nickname stop bothering you?” Celestia was a bit taken aback by Luna’s reply, yet somewhat entertained. “Could my dear Lulu be growing up,” Celestia asked, covering her mouth, as she chuckled.
“Maybe,” she replied. Luna’s gaze had shifted from her sister, as she stared off into the distance, watching the pony’s within the city of Canterlot begin to stir.
“Is something wrong,” Celestia asked. She stared at her sister, noticing the reserved smile she bore, and the quiet melancholy look in her eyes. “Sister what troubles you?”
Luna shook her head, waving a forehoof dismissively, as she turned her attention back to Celestia. “Nothing my dear sister, just memories...memories that I wonder if I should hold onto.” With those words Luna rose as the regalia she wore on her hooves, softly, clacked on the marble floor of Celestia’s balcony.
“I know you speak of James sister, but I don’t understand why you torment yourself so with thoughts of him. I feel as if there is nothing I can do to help you, to help you heal, if you don’t let go.” Celestia stood, the same soft echo of regalia against marble echoing out as she did so, moving closer to her sister. “You know he doesn’t have his memories anymore, you know he doesn’t remember you...so why hold on and suffer,” she asked. Celestia stood silently for a moment after she spoke, before wrapping one of her wings around Luna. “I just want you to smile again Lulu.”
Luna was silent for a moment, a moment that lasted an eternity to her, as she felt the solitude she’d known during her banishment slowly return. “What you say is true, but I can not simply forget him,” she replied finally, forcing down the lump building in her throat. “I can’t...to forget him, would be just as if I were denying my part in his old life ending, and I will not allow that.” Luna sighed as she leaned against Celestia, nuzzling her face into her sisters prismatic mane.
Celestia lowered her head, resting it upon Luna’s lightly. “Lulu...you’re not to blame for his death, he is the only one at fault,” Celestia whispered softly, trying to comfort the younger alicorn. “Why do you keep blaming yourself?”
“I was all he had.” Luna shifted her gaze up towards Celestia, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “I know I told you I found him...when he...when he tried to take his life,” she spoke softly. Luna feared the surge of emotion that would undoubtedly follow, sadness, anger. The sensation she felt tugging at her heart, when she realized time and time again, how close she’d really come to losing him.
“Lulu,” Celestia whispered, as she stroked Luna’s mane. “I’m sure you’re just overthinking things. Surely he had his parents, and what of siblings?”
“He was all alone,” she replied. Her voice seemed to just vanish, every word, growing more and more quietly. “His mother, and father, both died when he was but a small boy...no brother nor sister. He was truly all alone...those that housed him, they didn’t care about him,” she paused. Luna thought back to all the times she would find James crying into that old teddy bear of his, all the times she would sit in silence, embracing him as he wept. “I was all he had, and I just left him.” A tear slipped free from the corner of her eye, trailing a path down her elegant face, before being brushed away by Celestia,
“But did you not tell me that it was James that left you, wasn’t he the one who vanished, leaving you heart broken,” Celestia asked.
Luna only nodded in reply, stifling the sobs that wished to escape her. “Yes, but I’m beginning to think I was wrong.” Luna couldn’t do anything but think, her mind returning to the night she discovered James. “I opened the portal to James’s world, just like I had done so many times before...but something felt...odd.” She stood from her sister, leaving the warm embrace of her wing, and made her way to the edge of the balcony. Luna leaned back, propping her forelegs on the railing, as she closed her eyes.
Celestia quickly followed her sister, choosing rather to sit at her side, than stand. “What happened next, you can tell me.” Celestia spoke, placing a hoof on Luna’s shoulder.
“I went to the home where I would often visit James, yet as before, he wasn’t there...only an empty, barren room. I must admit I’d lost hope, I mean how was I supposed to find him.” Luna asked. She didn’t seek an answer from her sister, only understanding, which she could see in Celestia’s eyes. “I was about to depart, come back to Equestria with my tail between my legs...when...when something I still can’t explain happened.” Luna stopped for a moment, pushing off of the railing, as she moved to sit by her sister.
“Well, what exactly happened?”
“I felt him...I heard him call out to me.” Luna closed her eyes, still finding it hard to believe herself, but she could still feel it.
Celestia sighed, a weak smile playing at her lips. “When one feels strongly for another, often bonds are formed,” Celestia spoke softly. “A bond born in the heart, a bond that all may know, but only few truly do. This bond is known as friendship, and many times over it has proved to be more powerful than any magic. Though we may not see it, or even be able to rationalize it...we can always know it, and feel it. Because when two hearts are connected through friendship, no door is ever closed, and no barrier ever separates.”
Luna smiled, as she wiped away a tear. “Truly beautiful words my dear sister, and they are appreciated.” She leaned against Celestia once more, closing her eyes, as she relaxed. “I closed my eyes, thats when I saw it..,” she said, trailing off.
“What exactly did you see, James?”
“No, then again...maybe it was.” She was admittedly just as confused now by the strange occurrence, than she was when it happened. “I saw a beam of pure beautiful light, more amazing than any moonlight I have ever created, it’s brilliance rivaling that of your sun’s. I was captivated by it...I felt as a moth to the flame...enticed, entranced. I was filled with the warmth of heart that I found at James side, the calming serenity I found in his voice..,” she said tenderly.
Celestia found herself becoming teary eyed at her sister's words, feeling their truth, seeing the sincerity in her eyes. “You loved him...didn’t you?”
“I still do,” Luna whispered. “I followed the light, even with my eyes closed, I soared through the sky. It wasn’t until I’d nearly reached James, that I realised the light, was fading...quickly.” Luna sighed once more, as graphic images of how she’d found James, came to her. “I entered his window, finding nothing but a small note on a writing desk...before I was overwhelmed by the scent of a strong spirit, and blood.” Luna turned her gaze to Celestia, her eyes swelling, as she fought to hold back her tears. “I followed the mixture of scents to the bathroom, where I was greeted with sadness, and despair. I saw James sitting there, his eyes closed, blood flowing from his wrists. I called out to him most certainly sure that he had already passed, but through weakened beats of his heart, and labored breaths...he spoke.”
Celestia sat there, listening intently to her sister, unable until now to fully grasp the severity of the state Luna had discovered James in. She knew Luna had spoken to her briefly about it before, but not in such detail, not in such a way that she could almost swear she’d seen it personally. “Luna...I had...I had no idea.” For the first time in a millennia, Celestia was speechless. “I’m sorry,” she said sheepishly. She realized now how wrong she’d been in assuming Luna had brought James to Equestria without just cause.
“No apology is needed sister, I know full well that you only wish for the safety of our subjects...but know that I would never have brought James here, unless I knew he would not be a danger.” Luna smiled, hugging her sister tightly, wrapping one of her wings around Celestia. “The rest...well you already know. I saved James, by convincing him to let me bring him here, and now he’s a pegasus. A pegasus with no memories of who he was, the life he lived, or the bonds he formed.” Luna stretched, as she pulled her wing away from Celestia, before letting out yawn.
“It seems that you’re tired dear sister,” Celestia said with a smile. “Perhaps you’d like to sleep, I’m sure the retelling of James’s story is hard on you?”
“It is, but as I said...I cannot just forget it.” Luna sighed, as she rested against her sister, enjoying the warmth of her coat. “I know I wanted to blame James for leaving me, I wanted to despise him, to forget him,” she said, wiping away a tear. “But once he realised the voice that called out to him was my own, he said something that I cannot even understand.”
“What did he say, or was it just random words of a man upon death’s door?” Celestia was curious, though she did her best to hide it. She did not want her sister feeling as if she was trying to pry, or as if she were interested in the details of James’s death...but she was. Celestia wanted to know what was said, she ached to know why her sister was still so enthralled by this former human, who had lived a life so distraught that he would end it.
Luna’s body quivered, trying desperately to hold back the unshed tears, the heaving sobs that racked her form. “He said he had waited for me, he’d waited for me many years...he waited many lonely nights,” Luna trailed off. She recalled James stretching out across the bathroom floor, desperately reaching out to her. “Even after I told him that he would forget everything, his only question was...would he forget me. I can still remember the look in his eyes as I told him he would, the heartbreak in his voice, as he spoke again. He said that no matter what his new life brought him, that he would find me again, that he...” Luna couldn’t hold it in anymore, as she began to softly weep.
Celestia embraced her sister, tightly, lovingly. She almost cradled her younger sister, seeing the pain she was in emotionally. “Lulu,” she whispered. “You do not need to continue sister, I believe I understand.”
“No, Celestia you don’t,” Luna replied. Her tone dripped with sadness, as her mind was plagued by a longing to see James once more, to simply be at his side. “The last words he said to me...he said that he loved me.”
Celestia’s eyes widened. Could he really have loved Luna, she thought. “My dearest sister your heart aches, as does mine, at having to see you like this. I see you longing to be by his side once more, so tell me...why can’t you go to him?”
“The spell I used on James, it didn’t erase his memories, it simply sealed them,” Luna said to her sister. “I simply sealed them away, trying to erase them fully, could have destroyed his mind. The only catch to the spell, is that it needs a trigger, in case one was to ever want to break the seal on the memories. I cannot see James, cannot speak with him, for one reason only,” Luna sighed after she spoke. She leaned back slowly, her eyes turning to stare up at Celestia’s with a mournful gaze. “I am the trigger, I am the only thing in all of Equestria that can release James’s memories. I am the only thing that keeps James from remembering his past, and I am the only one who can make him relive the tragedies of that life.”
“You sacrificed your own happiness, your own feelings of love & friendship, so that James could know a new life free of despair...You subjected yourself to a life of simply watching from afar, of caring from a distance, just so he may know of all the good in life.” Celestia squeezed her sister gently, nuzzling her face into Luna’s mane. “You really have grown up Lulu,” she said, as she stared down at her sister. “You have learned, accepted, and put into practice one of the greatest virtues in friendship...self-sacrifice.” A tear rolled down Celestia’s graceful cheek as she spoke. She was proud of her sister, proud that she would so valiantly put others well being, and emotions before hers. Yet she was saddened, saddened beyond words, by the situation Luna had gotten herself into. “Come sister, it is time for you to rest. Let the weight of the world, and your emotions melt away, and rest. I shall watch over you, as I have always done,” Celestia paused for a moment, letting out a small sigh, as she kissed the top of Luna’s head. “I shall even watch over James for you.”
Luna gazed up at her sister, her eyes still shimmering with tears, as a faint smile graced her lips. “Thank you sister.” She spoke softly, nuzzling her face against Celestia’s neck. “I shall rest easy knowing you will watch over him.” Luna leaned away from her sister, and stood, wiping a few tears from her face. “Maybe one day, when I can talk about such things without crying, I shall tell you of my time with James.” With that Luna turned, walking into Celestia’s room, as she made way to the large chamber door.
“You are very welcome Lulu, and I’d really enjoy hearing about your time spent with James.” Celestia smiled at her sister, delighted that her words had brought her some comfort.
“Cele,” Luna called over her shoulder, as she opened the door.
“Yes?”
“I just want you to know, that I love you.”
Celestia felt a warmth in her heart at her sister's words, doing her best to ignore the tears that sat in the corners of her pale magenta eyes. “I know, and I love you, my dear sister.”
With that Luna offered one final week smile, as she left Celestia’s room, and headed to her own to sleep. Once Luna had left, Celestia let out a soft sigh, wiping the forming tears from her eyes. How I do pity your situation sister, but I can see now that there is nothing I can do to help, this is something you must face on your own. I will stand at your side though, and do all that I can, to make sure you stay safe. Celestia thought, before her horn began to glow with the bright hue of her magic. She waved a hoof before her, as a small rift formed, and soon expanded into a small portal.
“Oh hello princess. You must have something important for me this time, I mean if you’re opening up a direct link like this,” called a light aquamarine mare, her horn glowing a brilliant amber.
“Yes. Tell me, have there been any rumors about a new pegasus in Ponyville?” Celestia spoke in a low tone. She was sure Luna was well out of earshot, but still she’d rather her actions not be known.
“Well now that you mention it...I’ve heard a few things about this pegasus named James,” she replied.
“Oh! well that’s marvelous,” Celestia said with a smile. “Tell me what you’ve heard?”
“Well...uh...gosh, let me think.” She moved a hoof to her chin, sitting in thought for a moment, before clapping her hooves together. “Ah now I remember! Word is that he’s staying with the apple’s over at their orchard, also I’ve heard that he’s been seen with Applejack in town, as well as Rarity. I think I also heard Rainbow Dash even ditched weather patrol the other day, just to give the guy flying lessons...not to mention the ruckus he and the Cutie Mark Crusaders caused...something about a giant exploding muffin, if I remember correctly.”
“Well it seems like James has been busy,” Celestia replied. So that’s where you ran off to Rainbow Dash, I’ll have to be sure to have a word with you. Celestia thought, with a sly grin.
“Uh princess...you okay?”
“What?” Celestia answered absentmindedly, returning her focus to the portal before her. “My apologies, I drifted off there” She coughed, clearing her throat, before she spoke again. “I need you to observe James for me, and report his actions, daily.”
“So you just want me to watch him? No assassination, or anything like that,” she asked, almost sounding a bit disappointed.
“Now my dear, not every mission I hand down to you will require you to take out a tyrannical foreign dictator, besides this task is very important. I won’t go into details at this moment...but keeping an eye on that pegasus, will insure the safety of the kingdom.”
“Wow, he must be important or something,” she said with a quizzical gaze. She wanted to know more, but she knew asking would be futile, given Celestia’s record of keeping her assignments strictly under wraps. She wouldn’t take the chance of letting information leak, less her somewhat...unsavory orders became public. “Well whatever your reasoning, it’s not my place to question it. Should I begin the assignment immediately?”
“It would be appreciated, and remember...don’t let him know you’re watching,” Celestia said with a smile.
“He won’t even know I’m there. I’ll send you my first report by this evening princess.”
“Good, I will send for you later in the week, so I may give you more information about James. Now I must go, I have matters to attend to, and I look forward to your report my little pony.” With that Celestia closed the portal, before allowing a soft sigh to escape her. Dear sister, I understand now...but I cannot allow him to run about unattended, not until I’m absolutely certain he’ll do no one harm...

“ACHOO!” James sneezed suddenly, throwing himself off balance. “Oh no, no...no,” he shouted. He tried desperately to maintain his balance, as well as the balance of the apple bushel he carried. He stumbled around for a moment, narrowly avoiding Big Mac in the process, before finally regaining his balance. Thats was almost bad, he thought with a relieved sigh.
“Gesundheit,” Big Mac quickly replied, in his normally stoic manner.
“Thanks Big Mac, I don’t really know where that one came from,” James said, with a small chuckle. “I guess someone’s talking about me.” The brown pegasus said in passing, as he tried to remember if one sneeze meant good things were being said.
“Eeyup.”
“Your as riveting a conversationalist as ever Big Mac,” James said deadpanning.
“Eeyup,” Big Mac replied, with a wry grin.
James simply let out a sigh, as he and Big Mac reached the barn, and sat the apple bushels’ down. James stretched, his body feeling lighter than normal, after finally being free of the bushel’s added weight. He’d been up since sunrise once again trying to fill in for Applejack, but resorted back to simply carrying apple bushels’. “Well I guess the rest is up to you big guy, you sure you can handle it alone,” James asked, quickly receiving a nod from the red stallion. “Well then, I guess I’ll head back to the house and get cleaned up, see you later Big Mac,” James called, receiving another nod from Big Mac.
He began making his way through the orchard, following the worn trail that twisted through the field of trees, a light hearted smile across his face. You know I’m really starting to enjoy all this, even the work. He thought happily, as he stretched his wings. I mean this whole farming thing, isn’t so bad now that my legs and wings don’t hurt with every step...although I’m still not a hundred percent yet.
“Well howdy James. Would you like to help me cook up some lunch?” Granny Smith called from the kitchen, when James walked into the house. “I even got all the applesauce outta the chicken suit,” she said with a smile, as James poked his head into the kitchen.
“Uh...sorry Granny Smith, I uh actually gotta get cleaned up, and head into town.” He felt a shiver go down his spine, as she mentioned the chicken suit. So...so...so much applesauce...applesauce everywhere.
“Well alright then, best hurry along...don’t wanna keep the young lady waiting,” Granny Smith said, with a grin.
James could feel his face turn red, as heat rushed to his cheeks. “It’s nothing like that.” He replied quickly, turning away from the elder green mare. “I’m just going to meet a friend for lunch...anyways I’ll see you later Granny Smith.” James quickly made his way through the living room, and headed up the stairs, to the bathroom.
A sigh escaped James as he closed the door, and leaned against it, taking in the simple bathroom. A nice shower sounds amazing right now, he thought. James pushed himself off the door, yawning, as he made his way to the tub. I mean yeah it’s a lunch date, but it’s not like a ‘date’ date, he thought, pulling the shower curtain back. James sighed, as he rubbed the back of his head, popping his neck in the process. He turned on the shower, stretching out a forehoof, testing the warmth of the water. Once it was acceptable to the pegasus, he stepped in, sliding the shower curtain shut around him. He smiled as he felt the warm water soak his coat, and admired the feel of it against his somewhat sore wings, and legs. I can’t believe I’ve already made so many friends. James thought; as images of The Apples, Rainbow, and Rarity all flashed through his head. Oh! I can’t forget about The Cutie Mark Crusaders. He let out a soft chuckle, as he pushed his wet hair from his eyes, and went about cleaning himself up.
James stepped out from the bathroom after several minutes, a small cloud of steam following, and headed to his room. James shook his head, tossing his shaggy mane back and forth, pausing every so often to push down a stray strand of hair. Looking himself over in the mirror, that sat atop the small dresser in his room, he smiled at his work. “There, it looks delightfully disheveled.” James let out a small laugh after he spoke, before turning his attention to smoothing out his tail. He gave himself one last look over, nodding in approval, before turning and leaving his room.
I wonder what time I should head to Carousel Boutique? He thought, drifting off into his own thought filled world, as he often did. What if I was already supposed to be there!? He thought suddenly, as he hurried down the stairs, waving to Granny Smith as he rushed out the door.

Rarity was sitting on her couch going over a few new dress designs, peering through her work glasses, as she scribbled down notes. “Hmmmm, I believe an different stitching pattern would just make this divine,” she commented to herself, when she heard a knock at her door. “Just one moment,” she called. Rarity sat down her design sketchings, along with her glasses, as she stood from her couch. She made her way to the door, and opened it with a smile, when she saw James on the other side looking a bit...rattled. “My word James, are you alright?”
James nodded in reply, a bit too winded at the moment to speak. “Please do come in, and sit.” Rarity ushered James in, closing the door behind him, and watched as he slumped down onto the couch. “Darling you look absolutely exhausted, would you like some tea, water perhaps,” she asked, moving to James’s side.
“No...no...I’m alright, just winded.” He finally replied, trying to slow his breathing.
“Well what happened?”
James inhaled deeply, letting out a deep sigh, as his breath finally came to him. “Well...it’s kinda hard to explain, and I really don’t believe what happened myself.” James said after a moment, scratching the back of his head, as he thought over his words. “Well I was heading over here, and kinda took a wrong turn through the orchard,” he admitted with a sheepish grin. “Next thing I knew I was in a cave, tripped on something, and had a very angry dragon...or at least I think that’s what it was, chasing me.”
“Giant, covered in scales, breathing fire...?”
“Yeah that’d be the thing that was chasing me.”
“Yes darling, that was indeed a dragon.”
“I thought so, anyways, it chased me for a good solid thirty or so minutes.” James paused, shuddering at the thought of the terrifying creature. “After I finally lost him, which was no easy feat by the way, I didn’t really know where I was.”
“My word, how did you find your way back,” Rarity asked, as she stared at James with a concerned look.
“Well finding my way back was completely accidental, I kinda just wandered around, until I saw this grey pegasus flying overhead. I tried to get her attention, but she was too busy eating a muffin to notice me. Needless to say I just followed the direction she’d been flying in, and eventually found myself on the outskirts of town.” Once James had finished he sighed, rubbing the side of his neck, as he thought.
Rarity laughed softly, covering her mouth with a hoof, as she stared at James. “Well I’m certainly glad you’re alright.”
“Ye..yeah...thanks Rarity,” James said, blushing.
She continued to laugh, as she watched his face turn red. Oh Rarity you are just awful, she thought. “So then James, I’m sure after your ‘ordeal’ that you’re quite famished. Shall we go an get some lunch?” She stood as she spoke, moving to take her saddlebags from a small table, by her sewing machine. James was about to answer, when his stomach sudden growled, causing his blush to intensify. Rarity simple laughed once more, as she walked past him, and stopped by the door. “Well then, shall we?” James nodded, as he stood, following Rarity.
The sun hung high in the sky, casting a golden blanket across Equestria, as Rarity and James walked the streets of Ponyville. They didn’t really say much, each enjoying the beauty of the world around them, in comfortable silence. Rarity finally broke the silence, as she pointed out that the large tree they passed was in fact the library, and home of Twilight Sparkle.
“You haven’t met Twilight yet have you,” Rarity asked, looking to James, as they continued walking.
“No, afraid not.”
“Well I’ll be sure to introduce you two sometime, she’s absolutely darling.” Rarity smiled as she spoke. “Oh look there’s Bon Bon and Ly...huh I swear Lyra was just standing there.” Rarity quickly shook off her quick bought with confusion, and cleared her throat, as she flipped her mane. “Well then, it would seem we’re here, I hope the food here is to your liking?”
James was a bit taken aback from the sight of the restaurant he found himself before. What...what’s with all the fancy get ups? He thought, seeing ponies in fancy clothing all around him. “Are we still in Ponyville,” he asked, a bit bewildered.
Rarity couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. “Yes we are darling, but this is...how do I say, one of Ponyville’s more higher end restaurants.”
“I...I can’t even begin to say the name...La Mare...” James stopped, finding it rather difficult to even attempt to sound out the rest.
“La Mare Lumineux, it means The Shining Mare.”
“Well that’s great and all,” James said, pausing as he scratched his head. “But I don’t think I can afford anything in this place, let alone pronounce anything.”
“Nonsense darling, I’ll be paying for the meal,” Rarity said suddenly.
“What!? Oh no Rarity I can’t let you pay for my meal, that would be rude, and...” James would have continued, had he not found Rarity’s hoof to his lips.
“Shush, I am paying, and I’ll hear no more of it.” Rarity flipped her mane as she spoke, slowly lowering her hoof. “And if you should find yourself not able to understand the menu, then I’ll take the liberty of ordering for you.”
James cleared his throat, undoubtedly trying not to think about Rarity’s hoof against his lips, before he spoke. “Alright, alright...you know you’re very persuasive,” he said with a chuckle.
“A true lady can always get what she wants darling, it’s just a matter of how she goes about it.” Rarity winked at James as she spoke, inciting another fit of blushing, as she lead him into the finely decorated restaurant.
“Ahh Madame’ Rarity, it is a pleasure to see you as always, I take it you want your usual table,” asked a rather formally dressed grey stallion, his cobalt mane and tail cropped short, and well maintained.
“Yes Jean, and please bring over an extra chair, I will be having a guest joining me for lunch today. Rarity replied, sounding even more proper than usual.
Jean replied with a simple nod, casting James a condescending glance from the corner of his eye, before heading out onto the dining floor.
Is there something wrong with me? James thought, feeling rather hurt by the condescending look of the male Earth pony, though he did his best to hide it. Once Rarity and himself had been seated, James glanced around the dining floor, taking note of all the exquisite decorations. Within a few moments drinks were brought out to the table, at which point the waiter asked for their order. As James had feared, he was left completely speechless, as he couldn’t make head nor tail of the menu he’d been given.
“My friend will have the linguine aux tomates, and I’ll have the daisy salade cesar.” Rarity quickly chimed in, seeing the confusion on James’s face.
“Ah marvelous choice madame’,” the waiter replied, as he took the menu from the table, and hurried off.
James let out a, somewhat, frustrated sigh once the waiter left. He turned his gaze to Rarity and smiled weakly, offering her a quick thanks for her help. The rest of lunch went well, as James and Rarity spoke. James speaking of what he did to help out around Sweet Apple Acres, and the flying lesson he’d had with Rainbow Dash...even the less than, dignifying situations the Cutie Mark Crusaders dragged him into. While Rarity spoke of her business, and of upcoming fashion shows she hoped to be attending, as well as her interest in giving James a make over. The latter of which prompted James into figuring out a polite way to decline. Once their food was delivered they ate in silence, due mostly impart to Rarity stating it was rude to converse while one’s mouth was full. Which given James’s current voracious appetite, translated roughly into, just shut up and eat.
Once James deftly devoured his meal, he still couldn’t pronounce it but found it delicious all the same, he let out a relieved sigh. “Well that was...a wondrous meal,” He remarked, with a smile. “Thank you Rarity.”
“Think nothing of it darling, sometimes it’s good to indulge ones...sophisticated tendencies.” Rarity wiped the corners of her mouth, delicately, as she spoke. “So then, are you ready for your day to get even better,” she asked.
James stared at her quizzically, thinking for a moment about what she could mean, when suddenly he remembered...the spa. “Oh...yes...you mean the spa, I uh actually have some pressing matters to attend to, and unfortunately won’t be able to accompany you.”
“My, my James, I had no word you could speak with such sophistication,” Rarity replied, batting her eyelashes. “But you’re not getting out of it.” She smiled deviously, causing James to feel a bit uneasy.
“But I...”
“Ah, ah, ah no buts. Really James it’s extremely impolite to refuse a lady’s request, especially after she’s bought you lunch,” she said, casting James commanding stare.
She’s...surprisingly intimidating. He thought, before laughing nervously. “Of course what was I thinking, that would be terribly rude of me, wouldn’t it?” James found it a little strange that he was so submissive to Rarity. Am I just being kind, or am I really intimidated...have I always been this much of a pushover? He thought, before being brought back to reality by the sudden appearance of their waiter.
“Your check madame’,” He said, in his uptight manner, as James would come to call it.
Rarity nodded, thanking him as she reached into one of her saddlebags, pulling a small coin pouch from it. “Here we are, keep the whatever is left as a tip,” she said.
The waiter thanked her, and turned quickly, scurrying back into the kitchen. “Well then James, let us not keep Aloe and Lotus waiting, they’re expecting us.”
“Who,” James replied, with a questioning tone.
“Ah yes I forgot you’ve never been to the spa, please do forgive me. Aloe and Lotus are the sisters who own, and operate the spa.” With that Rarity stood, as James quickly followed suit walking through the dining floor, and out the main entrance.
James inhaled deeply the still fresh, crisp, air that occupied Ponyville. Though they’d spent the better part of two hours in the restaurant, ponies still bustled about, even more than James had remembered it seemed. He walked alongside Rarity, once again becoming a silent listener, as she spoke of the spa.
“James I’m almost assured that you’ll love the spa, I myself make it a point to stop in once a week, once you leave...you’ll be coming back time and time again...we can make a habit of it,” she said, adding a bit of emphasis towards the end. James simply sighed in reply, thinking of how he would occupy his thoughts, as he sat through the spa treatments. They continued their walk, and James continued his listening about the spa, when soon he came to be standing before it. James stood in place, gazing at the building, when Rarity called to him from the door. “James.”
“I’m coming,” he replied, taking a moment to collect, and prepare himself. Lets do this. He thought, as he walked through the entrance with Rarity. James was immediately overpowered by the mixed scents of oils, lotions, and scented candles. Though...he had to admit...it wasn’t a bad thing. He was a bit surprised by the sudden appearance of the ‘Spa Ponies’, as Rarity had called them, but even more so their mirroring colors.
“Hello Rarity,” Lotus said with a smile, as she flipped her rose colored mane.
“Is this the friend you spoke of,” Aloe asked with a smile.
“Yes girls, this is James, and this is his first time in a spa...ever.” Rarity paused dramatically after she spoke, casting James a quick glance.
“Well then, should Aloe and I give him the works?”
“Oh yes darling, work him over completely, I want him looking like a new colt when you two are finished with him.” James could swear he saw a mischievous grin playing at the corner of Rarity’s lips, after she spoke. “And as for moi, well I’ll have my usual treatment.”
The sisters nodded in reply, as Aloe showed Rarity to her usual changing area so she could get her robe, while James was left facing Lotus.
“Uh...hi,” James said shyly, his face turning blood red, as Lotus leaned forward to get a better look of him. Do I have something on my face. He thought, desperately trying to avoid eye contact with her.
“Hmmm, come this way.” Lotus said , finally, after a few moments of awkward silence...or at least awkward on James’s part.
“Okay,” James replied, following the cerulean mare back towards a vacant room.
After several minutes a shrill shout escaped out into the spa, causing Aloe and Rarity to both smile, as they shot an entertained look at each other.

“Come now James, it wasn’t all that bad,” Rarity said with a laugh, as she looked across the bath at the irritated pegasus.
“Remind me to get you back for this,” James said, his tone irate. “I’ve never been so worked over in my life...I mean, I didn’t even know I could bend that way.” He sighed as he attempted to relax in the soothing bath. “Although the...what was it...preening, I think? Well whatever they called it, that part was enjoyable at least.” James had to admit it did feel rather nice, and this bath wasn’t hurting that thought in the least.
“See, I told you,” Rarity said with a smile, when she heard a very ‘faint’, yet familiar voice.
“Why hello Rarity.” Fluttershy called from the edge of the bath. “I didn’t expect to see you here today.” The soft spoken pegasus said happily, before taking notice of James, and quickly hiding behind Rarity.
“Oh well Fluttershy, whatever are you doing,” she asked, before remembering her friends...shy...nature towards pony’s she didn’t know. “Silly me.” Rarity said with a smile, slowly coaxing the yellow pegasus from behind her. “Fluttershy dear, this is my new friend James. James this is Fluttershy, one of my closest friends.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you fluttershy,” James said, slightly taken back by her initial reaction at seeing him. “I’m sorry if I startled you, I must admit, I scare myself sometimes.” James laughed softly as he spoke.
“Oh...no you...I mean...oh that is,” Fluttershy began, slowly stepping from behind Rarity. “What I mean to say is...it’s nice to meet you.” She finally said, after seeing the newcomer smiling, and laughing. “How is the bath today?”
“Oh it’s simply divine darling, do join us, won't you?” Rarity asked, receiving a small nod from Fluttershy in response.
Fluttershy eased into the warm water of the bath, taking a seat next to Rarity, as a very faint coo escaped her. James blushed deeply, barely hearing the faint noise, caused by the yellow pegasus.
“James, darling are you alright, you seem a bit flushed?”
“What me, oh yeah I’m fine, just enjoying the bath,” he replied quickly, turning his eyes away from the others. “Eeyup, just sitting here relaxing, why would anything be wrong,” he asked with a nervous chuckle.
“Is he alright,” Fluttershy whispered, leaning towards Rarity.
“Oh yes, he just gets like that from time to time, honestly it’s a bit cute...isn’t it?” Rarity asked with a sly grin, causing Fluttershy to blush deeply herself. Rarity let out a soft laugh, almost petting her friend, as she let her know she was joking.
The three sat in the bath relaxing, conversing every so often. Rarity telling Fluttershy of her meeting James the day before, and how their day had been today. James in return answering Fluttershy’s questions, concerning his lost memories, as well as his telling of his first days in Equestria.
“Oh how terrible, I would have been absolutely terrified to wake up in a forest with no memories of how I got there, or why I was even there.” Fluttershy shuddered at the very thought of it, as she tried to imagine how James must have felt.
“Yeah...it wasn’t exactly the best situation I’ve found myself in...I think,” James replied, wondering if he had indeed been in a worse situation.
“But he did make it out of the forest, and even managed to run into Applejack, so I’d say he did just fine.” Rarity commented, as she climbed out of the bath, and toweled off.
“Actually, I ran into the side of the barn,” James said, still remembering the force of the impact. “I’m starting to think if it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” He sighed as he spoke, slowly moving to pull himself from the bath. “But then again, I really can’t complain...I have made some wonderful friends.” James smiled, as he moved to grab a towel, hearing Rarity let out a soft ‘awwww’.
“Well James, I myself, and I’m sure all your other friends are happy to have met you. Why you and Fluttershy here should become friends, she is exactly the kind of mare one seeks in friendship,” Rarity said, causing Fluttershy to blush and mutter something under her breath, as Rarity nuzzled her cheek.
“Well...I...I mean if it’s okay with you, then...then we can be friends.” Fluttershy said timidly, as she herself exited the bath, and toweled off.
James smiled, as he tossed the now damp towel into a basket, and shook off the remaining water. “I’d like that Fluttershy, I mean...if you want to be my friend that is?”
“Yes, I believe I would,” Fluttershy said with a smile, as Rarity stepped between them.
“Well then, James,” Rarity said with a pleased grin. “Looks like you can add one more friend to your list, why with her medical treatment, and Rainbow’s skills...you’ll be flying in no time.”
James couldn’t help but smile feeling a sense of happiness fill his chest, as he fought back a tear, thanking them both.
The rest of the day went by smoothly for James, as he spent it with Rarity, and Fluttershy. They visited Fluttershy’s cottage, where she introduced James to Angel Bunny(unfortunately), which resulted in Fluttershy using ‘The Stare’ on the ill mannered creature. Which ended up scaring James just as much as Angel, and lead to an emphatic apology from the yellow pegasus, which included some rather delicious tea. After ‘The Incident’, which James would refer to it as, Rarity and James bid Fluttershy farewell.
“Well James, I believe I shall retire for the evening. I did ever so enjoy our day together, and as I said yesterday, you're always welcome at Carousel Boutique,” Rarity said with a smile, as she stood at her door.
“Yeah, all in all, it was a pretty good day...thanks again Rarity.” James smiled as he bid his friend goodnight, and she went inside. Yeah today was a great day. He thought, as he walked down the nearly empty streets of Ponyville, offering a smile to those he passed.

Princess Celestia sat patiently within her chambers, as she slowly lowered the sun, marveling at the beauty the fading sunlight created. When she heard a small crackle, and soon a small portal opened before her.
“Your majesty, I have the first of your daily reports ready,” the unicorn mare said with a smile.
“Ah, wonderful,” Celestia replied, as she finished lowering the sun. “Please be quick, Luna will be here soon, and I do not wish her to know I’m having James followed.”
“Yes your majesty,” the mare replied. “I began following the target shortly after speaking with you, first sighting him walking with Rarity through the market. They went and had lunch at La Mare Lumineux, which on a side note looks amazing,” the mare said, causing Celestia to shoot her annoyed glance. “Oh ye..yeah..sorry....After finishing their meal, they departed from the restaurant, and made their way to the Ponyville Spa...at which point they met Fluttershy. The target accompanied both Fluttershy, and Rarity to their respective homes after their spa visit, at which point he made his way back to Sweet Apple Acres.” The mare paused after she spoke, pushing aside a scroll she’d been reading from. “And that Princess ends my report.”
“Very good, I look forward to tomorrows report,” Celestia replied, before hearing the faint sound of her doors opening. “Continue the good work work, my little pony.” With that Celestia closed the portal, and quickly turned, smiling as Luna walked in. “Good evening dear sister, did you sleep well?”
“Yes, and thank you again for your kind words earlier sister, they truly put me at ease.” Luna smiled as she spoke, moving to stand at her sister's side.
“I am glad, now...shall you bring another night to our dear subjects?”
“Yes, and this night, I shall make it a truly beautiful one.” Luna’s horn began to glow, and soon the first silver rays of the moon began to emerge from the horizon, accompanied by a beautiful shroud of stars.
“It truly is beautiful Lulu.”
“Thank you...it’s for him,” she said, with a light hearted smile, causing Celestia to smile as well. Are you looking James, are you staring up at the night that I created for you?

James sat at his window, peering up at the freshly risen moon. His eyes danced, and played about, as they went from one star to the other...admiring their beauty. He found comfort in this night, more so than he had others before, as the feeling of the presence that watched over him returned. Thank you. He thought, admittedly confused why he’d just thanked the night sky, yet as he gazed into the moon...he felt as if thanks was in order.
James finally tore himself away from his window, though the intoxicating trance he found himself in was more than, a bit difficult to leave. He climbed into his bed, nesting himself between sheets, and blankets. He quickly found his eyes growing heavy with sleep, and turned in his bed, to stare at the moonlight that filtered through his window. Goodnight moon. Was his finally thought, before submitting to the blissful call of sleep.
“Goodnight James,” Luna whispered from atop the hill she sat on. For the times we wander, we shall forever walk side by side. The earth beneath, beguiled by the silver allure of Luna, while Solis blesses those who falter to her sisters charms. I will forever wait, for the day that you and I shall be reunited. For the times we wander, we shall forever walk side by side, or path guided by Sol et Luna. Luna thought, with a smile. “I will always watch over you...my love...my friend.
