Author's Note
So! I wrote this something like the week after the movie premiered, and I’ve been sitting on it since then. Y’see... there was a glaringly obvious pairing in the film, and this was it.
But as heavily as they leaned on that unhealthy, pathetic, mama's boy side of Sprout, it was pretty obvious that they couldn't possibly have anything other than a grossly dysfunctional relationship, so here we are!
I have fluffier stories coming, honest! In the meantime, enjoy creepy-fun-family time.
Other Side of the Coin
Phyllis Cloverleaf hummed to herself and smiled as she looked through the wine cellar She could smell the ratatouille cooking upstairs, something celebratory, and so she looked for a good syrah to pair it with. Cinnamon Sauce was always offering to pick the wine for dinner, but Phyllis didn't want to get completely out of practice. Besides, tonight was special!
As she considered several bottles, trying to remember what was supposed to be different between each one, she thought back on the long last couple of days. The disaster at the expo, a unicorn coming to Maretime Bay, that stupid little filly running off with her…
It would have been enough to drive her to the wine cellar for entirely different reasons if not for the bright spot: Her little Sprout was finally starting to blossom.
After years of watching him languish in Hitch's shadow, he was finally getting his day in the light. Sure, he might be letting it get to his head a little - she still needed to talk to him about the whole "Emperor Sprout" thing - but she felt that a little power and confidence agreed with him.
"And it's all thanks to your love and encouragement," he'd said.
Phyllis had felt her heart flutter a bit at that. It had been more than twenty years of work, but it was finally paying off, wasn't it? Sprout was growing into the stallion she'd always dreamed of, the stallion his father could never have been. A strong, confident, handsome stallion who loved the mare who made him what he was.
Picking out a bottle, a hefty magnum of syrah from the Limestone Basin, Phyllis went back upstairs humming a happy tune, looking forward to the night ahead.
As it turned out, she was right to do so. Sprout had gotten home at a decent hour, dinner had been both delicious and pleasantly calm, and the wine choice was perfect, if Phyllis had to say so herself!
Now, however, came the touchy part….
“Sprout, sweetie, are you sure about this ‘going on offense’ thing?” She asked him after they’d finished eating, sipping from her fourth glass of wine in the last couple of hours. “Canterlogic has always been about protecting earth ponies.”
“That’s just the point, Mommy,” Sprout grinned, swirling his fifth glass around a little before draining it. “This is about protecting us. Protecting all of Maretime Bay for good.” He stamped a hoof down on the table for emphasis before refilling his glass with the last of the wine. “You’ve been making sure we’re prepared for an attack for more than twenty years - almost my whole life! I’m going to make sure it’s the unicorns and the pegasi who are afraid now. So afraid of us coming back that they’ll take their magic and go somewhere they can never threaten us again!”
“I just don’t want anypony to get hurt, dear,” Phyllis sighed. She finished her wine, swishing her tail behind her nervously. “Least of all you!”
“Don’t worry! I’m using the top of the line in Canterlogic technology to make sure we’re magic-proof, flight-proof, bomb-proof, and freaky-psychic-power-proof." He stood up and walked around to Phyllis' side of the table, nuzzling her cheek gently.
"I don't want anypony hurt either. But I'm going to do what Hitch never could; make us all safe. And it's all," he paused to kiss her cheek, “thanks," another pause, his lips ghosting along her jawline making her shiver at the attention, "to," he turned her head, looking her lovingly in the eyes, "you." He kissed her again, on the lips, and Phyllis moaned into the contact.
When had her Sprout gotten this forward?
"Maybe we should take this somewhere more private, and I can thank you properly?"
"Confidence suits you," Phyllis rumbled as she drained her wine and stood to join her son.
The house was quiet, empty except for the two of them, but they still snuck through it like a couple of teenagers afraid of waking their parents. Sprout nipped at his mother's flank playfully, and she giggled as she swatted him with her tail, 'accidentally' fanning the scent of her growing arousal into his face. They each swayed a little, slightly tipsy after dinner and the wine, but neither especially drunk.
Just enough to be an excuse if the unthinkable happened and they somehow got caught.
Phyllis whirled around inside her bedroom, meeting Sprout as he rose to his hind legs, the two of them embracing and falling back onto her plush bed amid giggles and the wet smacking sounds of an incestuous make out session.
"My handsome stallion," Phyllis rumbled.

“Let me get turned around,” she murmured. She started to roll over, but Sprout put a hoof on her barrel to stop her.
“Maybe we can try something new?” He suggested, shifting his hips to rub his shaft against her muzzle. “I’ll do the work tonight.”
Phyllis frowned a little bit, but shrugged. If he wanted something new, why not?
“All right, just go slow to start, okay sweetie? It’s been a while since Mommy’s done this!” She turned, stroking his shaft with a hoof and licking at it, savoring the taste before she laid her head back and stretched her jaw to accommodate his not-insignificant shaft.
“I’ll start slow,” he promised. He started to slide forward as Phyllis suckled at his head, moaning contentedly as her son fed himself down her throat. More than you can imagine, Phyllis thought, but despite that, she shook her head.
“No, Sweetie, I just… just need to go take a shower and get a drink.”
“M’kay… you want me to come with you?”
“No, Sprout. Just… change the sheets before you go to sleep, okay? Mommy will be right back.” Sprout nodded as Phyllis rolled over, wincing at the feel of her fur pulling against the sheets, glued down by her son’s seed. “And, ah… don’t be too hard on Sunny, once she’s back. Hitch will be back in charge then,” she pointed out, turning to limp off into the master bath.
“Sheriff doesn’t outrank Emperor. Unless they don’t pass the Sprout Act, it’ll be fine,” Sprout countered easily, sending a shudder up her spine before she closed the bathroom door.
And, for the first time in years, locked it behind her.
Phyllis looked in the mirror at her tear-streaked face, her ruined makeup running in both directions from her eyes. She got her supplies out of the medicine cabinet, and made short work of cleaning off the muddy streaks of mascara and eye shadow before she climbed into the shower and twisted the water as hot as she could stand it before collapsing onto the ceramic tile, letting the steaming water soak her all over, and the noise of it drown out her gasping sobs.
Emperor Sprout. It had almost sounded funny earlier, but now….
She’d talk to him about it. In the morning, when she could talk to him without thinking about what he’d done.
Or what she’d done to him ten years before.
Shakily, Phyllis stood up and started washing herself. Scalding water and fur-wash got the stickiness out from her fur, but it did nothing to wash away the sickness in her gut. When she was clean, and the hot water was starting to run out, she turned it off and sat beneath the showerhead for a few minutes before shaking herself off and turning on the blow-dryers built into the wall. Finally, she climbed out of the shower and took a deep breath before returning to the bedroom.
Sprout was laying on his side in the bed, the sheets changed and folded back on the other side for Phyllis to climb under.
“G’n take y’r horns away,” Sprout murmured in his sleep. “Wings too….”
Phyllis climbed into the bed with him, giving him a light nudge.
“Hmm?”
“You’re talking in your sleep, Sweetie.”
“S’rry.” He pushed the sheets back and climbed out of the bed, giving her a kiss. “I’ll go back to my room. Love you, Mommy.”
“Love you too, Sweetie,” Phyllis whispered, watching him leave the room before putting her head down on the pillows.
And trying to figure out when things had gotten so out of hoof.
