Princess Twilight, ruler of all Equestria, walked down the halls of the castle as she followed the attendant in front of her. But this was not her castle. The walls were not the shiny white marble as the one in Canterlot, but instead made of sandstone decorated with large masks of many different colors and shapes along with the occasional tapestry. The floor was made of well polished wood with a thin, red rug in the middle whose strands were noticeably thicker than the ones Twilight was used to seeing in her own home. From time to time, she passed by a series of large open windows which allowed the blazing afternoon sun to shine its light within as well as giving the Princess a look at the vast grasslands outside as well as the many rivers and canals that belonged to the nation of Zebraca.
Nervousness bubbled within the purple princess as she fought to keep herself from biting her lower lip, twitching her wings like mad, or do anything that would ruin the image of grace she had been working so hard on. She knew so little about this land, its populace, and its costumes even after studying all of the rare (and limited) books she could get her hands on about the Zebras. Nor could she get anything out of Zecora who had, sadly, been away to a distant part of Equestria to obtain rare herbs when the Zebra envoy had arrived. Armed with so little information, and Twilight being Twilight, her fears kicked into overdrive as she couldn’t help but imagine the worst possible outcomes. Like creating an international incident, leading to war and losing all the allies Equestria had made during her time as Princess.
The guards here didn’t help ease her nerves any either. They stood along the walls in groups of two or four, staring blankly in front of them as they allowed their royal guests to pass. Everyone of these black and white striped warriors was tall and muscular with their manes cut into identical Mohawks. So well built that she felt confident that any one of them could give Big Mac a run for his money in the strength department. None of the guards here was wearing the plated armor that Twilight was so used to seeing, instead going with a tanned button up shirt with matching pants. Judging by the heat she had felt outside, wearing plate armor would have just cooked these stallions alive. And perhaps these uniforms allowed for greater mobility within the grasslands and the surrounding areas. Though they were not without some form of protection: a spear held in one of their powerful hands while the other held a large oval wooden spear.
“Just breathe,” whispered a voice next to her, the owner’s musical tone instantly putting her slightly more at ease. Smiling a little, Twilight turned to her companion on this journey and sister-in-law: Cadence. While the pink princess of the north smiled back, there was a slight strain to it while sweat appeared around her brow. Something that Twilight could feel on hers as well, though it was not from stress. Neither of them were used to such high temperatures and their attire did not do them any favors. Both Princesses had decided to dress as they normally would for a formal international meeting with Cadence wearing a long sleeved, dark red dress with crystals around the neckline as well as her wrists. Twilight’s was a dark blue one with long sleeves as well and slightly elevated collar on the back complimentary of Rarity who claimed they were going to be making a comeback. The end result being a slightly comfortable yet still tolerable amount of heat trapped within themselves. Hopefully night would help cool them down.
Twilight did not answer in words as she noticed the nameless attendant gesturing with his hand at two guards just ahead of them who were standing before a massive set of doors. Silently the pair went to work, opening the doors so as to not interrupt the flow of the trio’s travel. So, Twilight said nothing as they made their way into the room and only gave a brief nod to her sister-in-law to show that she understood. She needed to stay calm and not worry so much. She had Cadence here by her side, ready to help her as much as any of her friends back in Equestria. Together, they would face whatever would come their way.
And so, Twilight walked past the threshold and entered what had to be the throne room of the Zebra king. The room itself was a large, circular room that looked like it could hold fifty or more ponies at once without any of them feeling crowded. Along the walls were more masks, some that Twilight recognized from trips to Zecora’s hut while others she did not. Several thick wooden beams ran up along the wall, leading to a glass domed ceiling above their head which allowed the light of the sun to shine down upon the middle like a powerful spotlight. The red carpet was gone, leaving only the wooden floors beneath their hooves as they moved closer to the throne situated in the shadows.
There is where he sat, the ruler of all Zebras: King Zed. He sat there, dressed in a light red outfit that covered one of his shoulders and leaving the other bare as it then seemed to wrap around his muscular form. Like the guards, he was almost much taller than Twilight had expected even while seated and his mane was also cut as a Mohawk. However, unlike the guards, he greeted them with cool blue eyes that twinkled with kindness and warmth that made Twilight feel a bit more at ease. As they approached him, King Zed stood to his full height (something that made Twilight feel even smaller in his presence) as he spread his arms in a welcoming manner.
“Ah, our pony cousins have arrived,” he said warmly. “You are here sooner than I would have expected.”
Before speaking, Twilight bowed her head in respect. “We came as soon as we could,” she said kindly. “The envoy you sent said that the matter was urgent, regarding a crisis that has taken hold over your land.”
Zed nodded while his smile saddened, looking a little strained on his face. “Yes, crisis,” he said before seating himself, a small sigh escaping as he did. “Or, rather, several that are running amok through my kingdom. Some worse than others. But I do not see our envoy with you. Did she not return?”
“I asked her if she wouldn’t mind staying in Canterlot with Prince Shining Armor,” replied Twilight. “Forgive me for doing so, but after such a long trip by hoof she was worn out and needed some rest. I also felt that it would be wise to have a Zebra repetitive there to assist Prince Armor as I relay instructions based on our talks.”
Warmth returned to King Zed’s smile, making Twilight feel even more at ease. “There is no need to ask for forgiveness,” he said. “Rather it is I who should be doing so for the kindness you have given her as well as your willingness to assist us in this hour of need.”
“Both Equestria and the Crystal Empire will do everything in their power to help,” said Cadence as she stepped forward. “Hopefully, together, we can help you solve the problems your nation is suffering under as we form a new bond of friendship.”
King Zed nodded. “Yes, let this be the beginning of a long friendship between our nations,” he said. It looked like he was about to say more, but stopped himself as he stared at Twilight for a moment. As he did, the Princess of Equestria felt a pang of sudden fear thinking that she had done something wrong…somehow. But what was it? Was she supposed to bow her head in respect again? Or was it something else. Before her mind could come up with a dozen or so scenarios of her possible misstep, a bead of sweat ran down her forehead and onto her nose. Quickly she wiped it away before giving the king an embarrassed smile.
“Perhaps, before we begin, our esteemed guests should have a short rest,” continued King Zed, a bit of humor in his voice before glancing up at the dome overhead. “You have, after all, had a long journey and the sun shall soon set. Please allow me to offer you the best services my castle has to offer so that you may freshen up whilst I prepare a fine feast to welcome our newest friends. Then, we may begin our talks in earnest.”
“T-That isn’t necessary,” said Twilight as she raised her hands in protest, eager to get to work. “The crisis in your land-”
King Zed, however, interrupted her by simply raising a hand. “Princess, my land has been dealing with these problems for some time now. Waiting but a few hours will not cause my lands to sink into the sea or whatnot. Besides, minds and bodies that are rested often produce the best results. We will all need to be at our peak if we are to solve anything.”
Twilight said nothing as she slowly lowered her hand, the king’s words reminding her of what she had told Fluttershy a few years ago when they had been searching for a cure for Swamp Fever. To get rest and to not ignore your own well being while trying to help another. While it was true that she and Cadence had not traveled here by hoof, the voyage over sea had been draining on the both of them. “Thank you King Zed,” said Twilight at last, watching as the king’s smile brightened. “We humbly accept your kind offer.”

After leaving the king’s chamber, the attendant had brought both her and Cadence to a spiraling stairway leading up a tower on the opposite side of the castle. Upward the two went, round and round with no doorways or platforms to give them any idea just how high they were going up this massive tower. “It is,” replied an impressed Princess Cadence as she began to walk away from Twilight towards an odd looking orange flower near them. “It’s alright Twilight,” said Cadence as she stood up, patting the side of her dress to shake off some of the dirt that had gotten on it while she did. Cadence then slowly turned around before approaching her sister-in-law with a kind and understanding smile on her face. “You’re still a little new to all this. I’m just glad we didn’t offend the king when you refused him the first time.”
Twilight tilted her head a little at that. “Do you really think something like that would offend him?” she asked with a frown.
Cadence nodded somberly. “It could,” she said sadly. “I’ve personally seen it happen before. In fact, it happened to me during one of my first solo diplomatic visits to the donkeys! When I arrived, they offered me a room to rest in as well as something to drink. I had declined them, stating that I had a bottle of water in my bag and that was as far as I got. “But that’s not what you meant, right?” asked Twilight as Cadence looked away.

Just in case.” Cadence then let out a small sigh before giving Twilight a serious look. “This is just one of the things you have to be aware of when visiting a foreign nation. “I see,” said Twilight in understanding as she looked around her. She was glad that her host knew that she had meant well when she had initially declined his rather generous offer. Cadence laughed a little. “Perhaps a little of both,” she said as she gestured for Twilight to follow her towards the nearest pool.
Together they walked, laughing a little as they did, and only stopped when they heard the soft splashing of water from one of the nearby pools. Seconds passed as four zebra mares, who had been hidden from sight until now thanks to the foliage, made their way out of the water and moved towards the two princesses. As they got out of the water one at a time, Twilight found it a little strange that these four were the first mares she had seen since getting off the ship.
