The mighty and most regal King Sombra was furious.
Not only had the ungrateful curs of the Crystal Empire attempted to invite outsiders to take his throne away from him, but now they had the audacity to invade the sanctity of his castle! The nature of a living mind was far too complicated to be recreated by his magic, as powerful as it was. He needed real ponies who could make complicated decisions on their own without his guidance or magical energy. It was then he happened upon an experiment he had long since abandoned, one that allowed him to explore the universes beyond his own. The scholars had called him a mad-pony for even theorizing on the possibility. Months later he was delving deep into the dust and ash that lay beyond Luna’s accursed veil. None would humour his discovery, for both mockery and fear ruled the day.
He had seen a great many interesting things. Though without the ability to reach out and interact with them his options were greatly limited. Now refocused on the task Sombra whittled away many lonely hours in his chambers, reading tomes, conducting experiments and exploring the stars above. Progress was quick – Sombra’s embrace of dark magic had delivered unto him the ability to break the boundaries of what was possible.
And then he made his first breakthrough.
An animal, a singular dull spark, pulled through a portal of his own making and delivered to the castle. Still breathing and living as it always had. Sombra quickly killed the worthless rodent by snapping its neck and rejoiced. The solution he was seeking was close at hoof. An animal would not do. He needed intelligent creatures who would follow his orders. Weeks passed as Sombra divined many world and places in search of the perfect unwilling volunteers.
He found what he was looking for in the end. A blue and green planet filled with miserable, upright ape creatures. As disgusting as their forms were, they were greatly advanced as a species even without the benefit of magic. Sombra knew that fate had struck when he discovered that the planet even enjoyed a certain televised story that featured characters who were insultingly familiar. A selfish being like himself couldn’t let this opportunity pass by. After hours of thought he compiled a list of criteria that would narrow down his search. They had to be handsome, male, trained in guard duties or security, and most importantly – they had to be gay.

Job searching was a soul sucking experience.
This was something that everyone had to accept as fact these days. Sending out hundreds of applications to hundreds of jobs.
