(De)Flowering Hearth's Warming Gift
Nothing seemed to shake off the uneasiness that clouded chief Green Hoof’s mind. The stallion had pranced through some of the plantations of his village, inspected its crops, mended the garbs of a few scarecrows and lectured a couple of ponies he had found slacking on the job. He even offered himself to look over some of the foals to keep his mind busy, but he had far outgrown the days where he had the patience to handle their energetic antics, so he quickly dumped them on somepony else instead.
It didn’t matter what task he preoccupied himself with, the leader of the Earth Pony village couldn’t sit still, quite literally as he walked around in circles on an unnamed road. Some younger folk had gathered around to watch him and even started betting on how deep the trench he would dig from his incessant prance, until he yelled at them to mind their own business.
Mister Hoof resigned to his worries and made way to his office at the heart of the settlement, thinking that maybe he could quadruple check some of the crop rotation papers to help pass the time. A few of his fellow ponies had crossed by his path and asked how he was doing. Some offered him a delicious brunch and others invited him to drink with them and talk about unimportant things. Hoof rejected their offers, the guilt and worry that ate at his mind coupled with his workaholic nature prevented him from taking it easy.
Truth is, they needed more food. The Earth ponies never had trouble growing crops - at least when the other tribes cooperated with them - but due to an unexpected event, their supplies had diminished to an amount the chief wasn’t comfortable with.
The uppity unicorns had increased their food quota in the last delivery. They sent an envoy down from the unicorn mountain, something that was as rare as finding a four-leaf-clover, and met with the chief to personally and politely “ask” for more. Green had chased off the horned horse before he had the chance to ask why the sudden change, but his advisor - Mousse - along with a few trusted ponies convinced him to do as they requested.
Green Hoof mumbled a few expletives and pushed the door into his office: the most ornate building in the whole village. It was built with the best materials his ponies could find and the walls were adorned with decorations that the other tribes had offered him and his predecessors in good faith of their trade deals. It wasn’t meant to show superiority over everypony else, like the expertly crafted castle atop unicorn mountain, but yes to prove to the other tribes that even the leader of the Earth ponies should be respected. That, and it was a nice bonus for the back-breaking work that came with the position.
He muttered a faint groan when he sat down in front of his sturdy table, took out a scroll he kept locked up and counted the revisioned account of their food supplies. The chart looked as if they were well stocked, and thankfully the last time somepony had died of starvation was but a faint memory. But Green Hoof and Mousse have been working in this field for long enough to notice that they were approaching a very dangerous line that made both of them sweat.
Turns out that the most difficult task of being the leader of the Earth ponies wasn’t managing their supplies or keeping the peace; those were important tasks, but he always had his advisor and others he trusted to keep those in check. No, the most stressful thing so far was managing the food so they had enough to split it between his people and the other tribes.
Unicorns were self-entitled elitists that demanded food in exchange for raising the sun and the moon, and protection in case the flying rats came crashing down on them. The pegasi were war-mongering brutes that wouldn’t think twice about invading his land and enslaving his people, but the magical ponies atop the mountain made them hesitant. Still, the Earth ponies feared that starvation could push them to conquer their land, so they gave the pegasi food on the premise that they cleared the weather to better wield crops.
It took a while for him to notice that he had been tapping on the table again, furrowing a dent in the wood where his hoof usually sat. After he absentmindedly skimmed through his papers several times, he stopped to wonder if maybe he should call his mare to help pass the time, at least until Mousse returned from his delivery trip. Even an important pony like him deserves a few breaks every once in a while, or so he tries to convince himself.
Right when he was about to go out to call his wife, one of the youngsters from earlier showed up at his door with a smug grin. Green Hoof had made sure to remember her name, Apple Pie. Ever since her mark appeared she turned rebellious, playing pranks on ponies, taunting him and slacking off at work, more than enough times that he had to reprimand her in person.
“Hey, chief. Got your old hips tired of digging that hole? You’re not gonna impress fillies with those old customs, maybe you can find somepony your age up in the fields.” the young mare snarked, barely holding on to a laugh.
“If you have the time to come here and mock me, then I can send you to work for the rest of the day, young mare.” the chief shot back with a deadpan threat.
“Pffft. I’ll have you know that I’ve already done my chores for the day, for real.” she shook her hoof at him and rolled her eyes after listening to his predictable threat. “Besides, I’ve already picked up all of the apples on my family’s side, so there isn’t anything for me to do ‘til dad comes back from horny mountain.”
“Good to hear that the apples are doing well. And since you’re starting to become such a dutiful young mare, I can find you a nice open field for you to work at, all by yourself.
“Hah, you wish. Sending a defenseless filly at my blossoming age, all by herself to someplace far away from everypony else?” she coyly waved a hoof at his direction before continuing. “Just say that you’ve fallen for me and get it over with. Unfortunately for you, I’m a delicate flower and I wouldn't be able to handle somepony your size, love."
“Young mare!” His hoof shook the table with a loud impact, almost adding another dent on its surface.
“The supply stallions are back, and Mousse’s waiting for you at the village entrance.” Apple Pie threw a raspberry and closed the door, snickering to herself.
The news transformed his anger into an anxious sting in his gut. Green Hoof hurriedly stored the papers and sprinted to the entrance of the village. On his way there, he passed by some of the delivery ponies and their wagons as they made their way back home, and the lack of injuries on them relieved the chief. Some of them stopped in their tracks to salutate their leader, but he didn’t dawdle for long. Once they relayed to him that there were no casualties nor injuries this time, he continued on his path.
The soft dirt road started to get more coarse towards the outskirts, and right at the mouth of the village he found the pony he trusted the most - something he wouldn’t dare admit it to his wife - Mousse. The stallion was only a decade younger than him, but his cleverness helped him immensely with the load of things he had to manage with his people. His meticulous attention to details and multi-tasking was what awarded him the merit of second-in-command.
Mousse waved and called his superior, and his high spirits made Green Hoof smile in return. The chief had to cover his eyes from the sunset rays that came down directly on his face, and because of them he didn’t notice the small figure wearing a purple robe peering at the surroundings that stuck behind the advisor.
“Hey, Green! We delivered the food with no problems. No bandits were spotted on the way up either, it was a smooth operation.” his subordinate opened up the conversation brimming with glee. “We also had no problems on our way back. The unicorns gave us water to quench our thirst, and even offered us rooms to rest for the night, but most of the crew preferred to come back to their families.”
It is no wonder to the chief why they chose that. The trek to and back was arduous and tense, but after spending a whole day anxiously looking at the clouds, waiting for flying rats to swoop down and rob their load and possibly maim them would leave anypony longing for the comfort of their close ones. That, and the snobby attitudes of the mountainous ponies could only be endured for so long.
“Good, that’s good. They’ll have tomorrow’s day off for their good work. Did you do as I have asked and spoke with Queen Shine?” the leader wasted no time with their introduction. They could start with pleasantries once he knew what excuse they had passed down to them.
The younger advisor averted his gaze and scratched his neck. “I sought an audience with her, yes… She seemed very glad that we brought more offers this time around, but when I inquired about the increased taxation, she requested that she speak with you personally.” he spoke carefully. “I insisted that you had given me permission to negotiate in your place, but she would not have none but her way.”
Greenhoof snorted, that indeed sounded like the unicorn leader. Spoiled to the bone, more stubborn than a tree stump. He doubts that his underling could manage to sway her opinion on the matter, because if that were possible then they would have had less troubles in their past negotiations.
“So you’re saying that the witch requires my presence to give us the grace of explaining why she’s raising her quota?” the chief exhaled through his gritted teeth. “I swear to the Titans… OK. I’m going there tomorrow, and you can take care of the village while I’m gone.”
“Witch…?” a quiet voice spoke from behind Mousse.
Green Hoof’s attention snapped to the mysterious figure, who cranked their neck from its hiding spot and looked back at him. The robe it was wearing was a might too big, and it drooped down over their face and eyes. A dim blue glow shone from under the cape, lifting it over the pony’s head, revealing a little unicorn filly with a sparkling horn. That took the chief by surprise, he lifted his hoof to check if he had stepped on any four-leaf-clovers by mistake.
“No need, Green. Well, I don’t think so, at least. She might have ignored my plea, but she arranged her own messenger to talk with you instead. It’s this little filly here, by the by,” he clarified, stepping out of the way once he noticed that the visitor still clung to his backside. “She told me that this foal would carry the message for you to listen in private. Honestly, I’m a little bit insulted, I could have carried the letter myself.”
Whatever that mare was thinking confused Green. If the level of secrecy was such that she could only trust a personal courier, one so young at that, then something bad must be looming in the horizon.
The chief’s jaw locked firmly on his muzzle and his eyes inspected the messenger. Her deep purple robe clashed horribly with the tones of her body, a dark grey in coat with a lighter tone in her wavy mane. The two stared each other down, the foal observed the stallion from top to bottom, and the trained eyes of the chief saw the ever slight tremble in her body.
“Welcome.” Green opened up, his voice firm as a boulder. “I’m the leader of the Earth ponies, Green Hoof, and I’m told your ride here was uneventful. Though our village may be humble, I have an abode that may satiate your palate. Come, we can discuss the matter at hoof in private.”
The filly drew a breath, got onto her hoofs and bowed at him. “Yes, sir.” Then, the edges of her cape levitated with her magical glow, as the cloth was too big for her stature and it would otherwise get dragged along the ground. The hood fell over her face again, making the blue glow underneath the only hint as to her true nature.
The chief nodded and said his goodbyes with his subordinate. They parted their ways, with Greenhoof motioning the foal to follow after him. If left alone, she could possibly get lost in the myriad of roads and intersections in his village, or possibly get stuck in the middle of a corn field maze. Or worse, dirty her clothes and complain about ruining her hooficure, whatever that meant.
Strangely enough, there weren’t any complaints, neither mumbles, grumbles nor bleating. Actually, the messenger didn’t even comment on the down-to-earth nature of his home at all, quite unlike the rest of her people. The silence was such that the stallion looked back at her several times to make sure that she had been following him and hadn’t fallen into a ditch.
Instead, the filly’s gaze inspected everything as curiosity spread across her face. Greenhoof assumed that his village looked a tad different from the things she was used to seeing, to say the absolute least. She made no condescending comments about anything, which was a relief, but had him knocking on wood. If not for the foreboding nature of the message, he’d be liking this change of pace.
Most of the folks that came across the duo didn’t give them much attention, aside from complimenting the foal’s cape, and only some had noticed the shape of the horned protrusion underneath the cloth. Those that did, gave her a wide berth, as past experiences usually ended up with shrill nagging that would echo through the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the visitor eyed them with interest, studying how they looked and behaved, oftentimes slowing herself down to a crawl.
“Hey, chief! Woah, lookit we have it here!” a voice breaks out not far away from them. Apple Pie leaned forward, crossing her front hooves over the wooden fence that made up the sides of the road with a smug smile on her mug. “You couldn’t take my rejection, so you fetched somepony younger? You’re pretty giddy for someone your age.”
Pie’s unexpected comment made Green Hoof break a sweat. It was bad enough that he had called the foal’s queen a witch earlier, but having this clueless teen call him a foal fiddler on top of suggesting that he’d have relations with the VIP was going to tarnish his reputation with her.
“Apple Pie! Stop with your foul mouth! Go back to your home this instant before I lose my patience with you!” Green threatened, holding a scowl that conveyed his authority to the apple filly.
“But damn, she looks old enough to be your great granddaughter! I knew you had a thing for me, but this is wild. What would everypony else think about your forbidden love, chief?” she continued her relentless tease.
“She’s an envoy sent by the leader of the unicorns herself.”
“Oh?” The statement caught Apple Pie by surprise. She glanced at the foal, who lifted her cape with magic to show off her horn to the apple teen. “Ooooh.” her ears splayed backwards once she started to process the situation she was in and had put Green through. “Oh.”
Green closed in the apple’s face and looked dead in her trembling eyes. “Go back to your family. I’ll have a word with them later about your behavior.” he spoke with ice-cold clarity.
Cold as his voice was, Apple Pie only felt the burn of coal dropping on her stomach. Her gaze shifted between the stallion and the foal in rapid motion, until her shame broke her and she sprinted off towards her house, almost tripping on her hoofs.
Embarrassed, the chief expected his VIP’s reaction to be of contempt or disapproval. Thankfully, the foal didn’t so much as glare at him, instead she seemed to find more interest in looking down at the dirt road. Green rubbed his face with a hoof and picked up the pace, motioning her to continue on the track forward.
“Your daughter?” the foal’s quiet voice asked, the first time he listened to it.
“No… No. My daughters are well behaved. This one’s a… bit of a rascal. Likes to pull pranks at the worst times.” he explained, trying to keep the frustration out of his tone.
“Sorry. You all look the same.”
If it were any other unicorn, he’d assume that it was an insult, but her haughty remark was betrayed by her timidness. Green raised an eyebrow, expecting her to continue, but she never did. He cleared his throat and asked: “We all look the same, how?”
“Sorry, sir. I, I didn’t mean it in a bad way.” she fumbled her words, but managed to keep a steady voice by the end. “This… You’re all new to me. Sorry.”
It was at that point that Green started to question whether she was really an unicorn, or if their foals weren’t as annoying as their parents. Maybe they soured as they grew. She seemed to be somewhat humble compared to what he’s used to, so maybe it’s going to be easier to be cordial with her. “And I am sorry that your first interaction has been so uncharacteristic of us. We all aren’t like her.”
She nodded, and remained silent for the rest of their walk. Thankfully for the chief, there weren’t any other encounters with troublemakers on their way, saving him a lot of embarrassment. Once at the front of his office, Green held the door open for the filly, who bowed and entered with haste, as she was probably tired of walking on dirt roads for the day.
The foal was already wiping her hoofs on the doormat before Green had the chance to offer her. He extended his hoof in an offer to take her clothing, but she merely blinked at his gesture, looking at him with the same underlying uncertainty that she presented earlier.
“Umm… sir?”
“Nevermind. Come, let’s sit down and start our talk.”
Green pointed to the lounge on the other side of the office, away from his office table. It sported a couple of cushioned chairs, a coffee table and a fireplace next to them. Usually he’d be behind the furniture to assert his position to the visitors, but he felt that there wasn’t much need to intimidate a foal, VIP or not. While she was trying to get on top of her seat, the stallion started the fireplace once he saw that the sun was starting to be pulled back out of the sky.
Once the filly had climbed atop her seat, the light that came from the fire exposed her barrel, and Green Hoof cringed when he saw how her ribs clung to her fur. It was a beauty standard for the unicorns to be thin and lean, unhealthily so, but he didn’t expect them to starve their kids as well. Or maybe it wasn’t an aesthetic choice, but a scarcity problem. He starts to wonder if this was why she sent this foal to him, an attempt to tug at his heartstrings.
“Where are my manners, why don’t you eat some of these fruits? They’re the same as the ones you have at your home, but these are fresh out of the fields.” he suggested, motioning to a stuffed bowl on the table.
“Thank you, sir.”
She then picked a banana from the bowl, and slowly ate through it. Green patiently waited for her to finish up, stopping her with his hoof when she was about to speak. Every so often her eyes would go back and forth, examining the place and its owner, but in a blink they’d be back on the meal in her hoofs. When she finished her meal, he offered her another one, but she refused it.
“I mustn't eat too much. I’ll get fat.”
Green Hoof exhales from his mouth upon hearing her comment. The more he mused about the situation, the bigger headache he caused himself, so he decided to go straight into the topic so he can go home and rest. He readjusts himself into his “official business” pose and clears his throat.
“Let us cut to the chase. I’m Chief Green Hoof, of the Earth ponies. What’s your name, little unicorn?” he starts off with his pre-recited go phrase.
“Oh! Excuse me sir, I forget myself. I’m Dusty Trail.” The filly responded after being caught by surprise.
“Very well. Dusty Trail, you do know that all of your meals come from my home, yes? We usually send a predetermined amount to your mountain, but this time your Queen had decided to increase the quota in the last expedition without an explanation.” The chief told a half-truth with steady wording and stern voice. “I would have gone there myself and asked her about the change, but recently my village has been victim to a few stray pegasi that thought our storages were easy pickings.
“So I sent my second in command in my place to speak with your leader, but he came back empty hoofed, telling me that she wouldn’t share words with him. Instead, she sends you to speak to me.
“And no insult to you, but in all the trips I’ve made to her castle, I’ve never seen you once in my entire life. Not in her court, not in the festivals, nowhere. So tell me, Dusty Trail, who are you, and why did your Queen decide to send a foal to my doorstep instead of explaining herself to the pony I trust the most.”
Only after he had stopped talking was when Green Hoof thought that maybe he was being a bit harsh with the foal. He expected that his barrage of loaded words would cause foals her age to sob - his children always did - but Dusty stood her ground. Her body trembled ever so slightly and her ears folded backwards, but otherwise she showed no signs of wetting his chair.
“I am sorry, sir. I wasn’t the one that decided on this… convoluted way of relaying information to you, sir.” she answered with a strained voice.
“Yes, it is quite convoluted. Would you mind answering my question, or should I repeat myself?” he repeated himself. Foal or not, this was an important reunion, and he’d treat her like he would any other guest.
“Sor- I’m no important pony, sir. I’m the daughter of Cleaning Duty, sister to three fillies and two colts. My mother is one of the many maids employed under Her care.”
The chief groaned and rubbed his face with a hoof. “So she sent a nopony. Is this a prank? Would she ignore the words of my advisor - somepony she knows is trustworthy, disrespecting us both? Please tell me, Dusty, that there's a reason behind her actions.”
Dusty fidgeted with a pocket on the inside of her cloak after he finished speaking, presenting a rolled up scroll adorned with the royal seal to the chief. “She is sane, I assure you, sir. I was selected and prepared for this occasion, this message was meant for me to relay to you.”
Her words helped get the sour taste out of the chief’s mouth. Her choices were strange, yes, but it seemed less like an action of bad taste than what he thought. “Speak.”
Dusty bowed once more, and a blue shimmer took off the seal from the paper, which disappeared once it lost contact with the surface.
“‘To the Noble Chief Green Hoof of the earth ponies. Greetings. It brought me to great joy when I saw your supple gift arriving at my gates. Thanks to your selfless heart, I’ll be able to prepare a dashing banquet that’ll be the talk of our annual festival. At first -”
“Wait a minute, wait a minute.” He interrupted. “Festival? Banquet? Are you seriously telling me that all of that food I’ve sent to her was a “gift”? There’s no food shortage, nothing? I sent all of that so that she could splurge at a fancy party!” the stallion almost yelled at the filly.
Dusty didn’t know what to make of his remark, her mouth opened and closed while trying to grasp words and her eyes darted between the letter and the receiver. While the stallion fumed on his chair, she read the next few sentences and gained clarity on the situation.
“You, I mean, earth ponies do not partake in exchanging gifts? Sir?”
Green Hoof started to believe that the reason why they had sent her instead of a grownup was because they gambled on him not going too harsh on a foal. The more he listened about this the angrier he had gotten.
“Explain.” he demanded.
“It is customary that at this time of the year that Unicorns would exchange presents to one another, in show of fortune or good faith, sir.” the filly carefully explained without deviating her gaze from his eyes. “I had done the same with my siblings, exchanged trinkets or coins I have been saving for various moons. Everypony does it. I’m sorry, sir, I should have explained from the start. I didn’t know.”
“So you’re saying that all that extra food, that I could have been saving, was sent as just a gift. Great, just... Excellent.” The stallion exhaled loudly and slumped on his seat. “Played me like a fool, Queen Shine.”
Dusty sat in silence, watching the stallion murmuring under his breath, waiting for him to ask her to continue. He didn’t seem overjoyed about the news, so she thought that maybe letting the cracking of the fire let him calm down would be a good idea. As strange as earth ponies looked to her, it seemed like both races similarly complained to relieve stress.
“Titans. Go on, read the rest.”
“Ah, yes. ‘At first, I wasn't expecting that you would participate in this exchange with me, after you had sent my messenger packing. It was a bit rude of you, but I can overlook such an incident. But oh how have you proven me happily wrong. With these, I’ll be the shining gem of the festival - as I always am, of course.
“‘I must admit, in anticipation of your response, I may have gotten ahead of myself and prepared a heartfelt gift of my own, so I am overjoyed that I didn’t go to waste. I hope you find it to your liking, for I have spent much of my time organizing the best of the best for you. Enjoy the fruit when it’s at its ripest. Sincerely, Queen Shining Gem.’”
With that, Dusty levitated the parchment for Green to read. She gave him some time to check its contents himself, then threw the paper on the fire next to them. “As per her request.”
“At least now there won’t be any evidence of my stupidity. So, what did she send me? We don’t have the need for yet another gem-encrusted abacus, and I doubt that whatever luxury she has will make up for the empty spots in my storage.” he muttered. “And I’ve yet to hear why she sent you all the way over here, when she could have given the letter to my advisor, even if it saved me the embarrassment.”
The chief looked expectantly at the foal, waiting for her to produce a shiny and remotely useless trinket from her cape that he would throw into the pile with the rest of them. But instead, she got up and made her way over to him. Her right was illuminated by the fire, bathing her side in a yellowish tint, casting a shadow over the table and bowl of fruits. She bowed, and spoke with stiff words, as if she had practiced them over and over.
“I, Dusty Trail, am your gift, Sir Chief Green Hoof. I promise you that I’ll make myself worth your time.”
He didn’t move, nor react in any way. He stood still and watched her, letting what she said process in his head. Green fixed his slouched posture and leaned in close to her.
“This has got to be a prank.”
“Sir? It isn’t. Is something wrong with me? I’m sorry if I’m not up to par to sir’s tastes. I’ll grow leaner, I promise you.” she pleaded under his harsh stare. When it didn’t budge, she continued “I got my mark a few moons ago, so I’m very good at cleaning! I… I can cook! I’m not very good with sewing, but I can learn! I was tutored on how to pleasure you best, they told me I was good at it, too!”
That line had caught him by surprise. He lifted her chin so that he could study her face for certainty, and he found her eyes trembling. “Might you explain to me what you meant by the end there?”
“I was taught how to be a good partner for you, sir.” she reaffirmed.
“So you’re saying that,” he paused, “in exchange for wagons worth of food, the queen sent me a filly for me to rut.”
“And to keep. As my brothers and friends have been serving for the Queen, I was chosen to follow their example.”
His mind began to swirl with many thoughts. Him and the Queen have gotten acquainted over the years and both developed a mutual trust in each other, maybe he could even go as far as to say they had a friendship under their leadership duties. Her personal barrier around him had faded enough that she didn’t mind displaying her more… queer tastes, to him. Sure, they were unusual, but he had never thought that the shrewd mare groomed foals for her sexual desires. He recalls having seen a foal or two in her personal chambers, but he dismissed them as the children of her staff.
Green didn’t know how she managed her personnel, but it was safe to assume that this must be a collaborative effort from her court, to keep rumors from spreading to other houses. And now, she seemed to have decided that he was part of her close friends after scratching her back for long enough and doing her favors, she extended her grace to him, which put him in a tight spot.
He could send her back, but it was likely that the Queen would see this as a spit on her face, an ungrateful attitude, she would say. He could keep her and train her to be his assistant, to work under him and Mousse, that’d be practical. Keeping an unicorn around might not sit well with the rest of the ponies, but they have no say about what he does with his property.
His property, yes. Shine had gone through all the trouble of sending one of her prized possessions to him, and the food that he sent is gone forever anyways. He shouldn’t be looking at the gift horse in the mouth. He observed the filly in front of him, stiff as a statue and worry molded on her face, and wondered.
“Are you scared of going back, rejected? Or are you worried that the big mean Earth pony will push you on the dirt? Tell me what you want, Dusty. You wanna go back?” he inquired.
“I don’t know, sir. Good foals serve The Queen. She told me that I serve you now. I’ll be good, I promise you.”
While she pleaded, the stallion grabbed the cord of her luxurious robe and waited for her to finish. He pretended to think over it, causing the filly to worry harder, but then he pulled the string, unwrapping his gift. The cloth fell to the floor and now the chief could peer at her naked body.
She was thin, as to be expected from her kind. He wouldn’t go far as to say she’s malnourished, but she was close to the point. At least it seemed like she was well groomed, her fur and tail shone under the light of the fireplace, a testament to her race’s zeal. Her mark was as he predicted, a dusty dustpan, she mentioned only receiving it not long ago. She was young.
Young yes, but… under the yellow light, she reminded him of his first partner. They were about the same age as Dusty when they rolled in the barn when no one had been around. She didn’t stay with him, but his memory of her touch lingered, even long after he had married. Perhaps he could help him relive those old memories of a simpler time. It had been very long since he had a young filly under his grasp.
Dusty had , for a filly at least, uncharacteristically not shied away from his gaze when she was disrobed, and her breathing had calmed down once he wordlessly accepted her as his.
