A wobbly set of mud-ridden yellow hooves dug into the humid earth, desperately pushing Apple Pie forward by a few inches. She yelled profanities and snorted, trying to finish her task while her aching body screamed at her to stop. Unless he had come to offer to carry her back home, then she’d tolerate his presence temporarily.
“I’ve come to check up on your house, and you weren’t there yet. You’ve done all this today?” he asked.

“It’s good work. I wasn’t expecting you to do this much.”

The betrayal shocked her. Apple Pie had spent years of her life within the group, pleasing them and helping them when they got in trouble. Apple Pie decked the plow once more when she heard the news.

“I’m not your enemy, Apple Pie, I only do what’s expected of my job.” he said, picked up the lantern and walked over to her. “I don’t enjoy having to do these things to you, but since you keep causing trouble for others, I’m supposed to punish you.”
She didn’t respond to him, hoping that if she let him talk, he’d leave her alone to her misery once he got tired of wasting his time. But to her surprise, he didn’t continue yapping. The stallion sat the lantern atop the plow and gazed at the wavering fire.
“Recently, a friend of mine taught me something,” Green Hoof told Apple Pie. “I’ve been everypony’s leader for twenty years… When I was just about your age, the previous chieftain saw something in me, got me to learn under his wing. “What?” she asked, not daring to look away from his gaze, her ears pinned to the back of her skull. She understood what he had said, but the suddenness of his words befuddled her.
“No pony is going to mess with my mare. Your friends will start respecting you, or at least they’ll have to stop spreading rumours about you, if they know what’s good for them. You won’t have to do heavy lifting ever again, and if you do a good job as my wife, the villagers might start liking you again.”
What he said did make sense, but Apple Pie thought that his offer was too good to be true, it didn’t feel like he had anything to gain from it. She’s so used to her own silver tongue that she could tell that there was something else to this deal, especially because of their hectic history with each other.

His hoof came down harder after every point that he made, the metal rang out loudly as he struck the surface.
