Why are they're no stars at night?
Twilight
The moon.
The princess is going to raise the moon!
The filly was beyond excited when her teacher asked her if she wanted to see her raise the moon.
Twilight loved the night. And she knew all about it. She read any book she could find on the topic. She thinks the night looks beautiful.
"How long more, princess?" Twilight asked her mentor from her spot on the princess's back.
Celestia chuckled. "Patience, my faithful student. We're nearly there."
"I can't wait!" The filly responded with a giddy clap of her little hooves.
"Hmmm, you seem quite excited." Celestia said while flicking a warm smile at the child on her back.
Twilight giggled. "I am! I've never seen you raise the moon before. So I'm reeeeaally eager to see!"
The white alicorn chuckled again.
"Well then, you might be in luck because we're here!"
Twilight's whole face brightened with excitement.
"Really! Yaaaayyyy!"
Celestia's horn ignited with a golden flare that she used to open the door before her that lead to the balcony. She stepped out and stopped at the rim.
Twilight could barely hold her excitement. She was finally going to see it! She was going to see the Princess of Equestria lower the sun and bring out the moon.
"Ready?" The sun princess asked.
"Yes, yes, yes!"
With that, Celestia lit her horn again and focused on the sun. Twilight drew in a sharp breath as it started to dip to the sky's horizon. The heavenly colors turned from the vivid blue to a vibrant orange and then a magical violet.
The sun disappeared beneath the horizon.
The filly felt her breath catch in her throat as darkness fell around her. She clung tighter to Celestia.
Then, a light began to shine from the horizon.
And then the lavender foal saw it. The pale white moon rose gracefully up in the sky. Twilight didn't think she would see anything more beautiful.
'It's so pretty' Twilight thought.
But wait.
Something was... missing.
The night... apart from the moon... didn't look anything like what the filly had seen in her book.
It was the stars.
The stars were not there.
Twilight could swear that in all the books and tomes she had read so far about the night sky... the stars were there.
Noticing the foals frown, Celestia raised a brow.
"Twilight? What's the matter?" The monarch asked.
Twilight hesitated. "Wa... why are... why are there no stars?"
A weird look flashed across the sun queens face.
Celestia's calm state fell into a more somber and slight fearful one.
Twilight wished she hadn't said that. But she was still curious. So she tried again.
"Please princess. Tell me. Why are there no stars?" The unicorn pressed.
Celestia looked down and still remained silent for a while. But it was still her that broke the small silence.
"It... it's because... She hesitated before heaving a deep breath.
"It's not my duty", she admitted quietly.
Twilight's eyes widened with disbelief. "Princess. What do you mean?"
Celestia gazed into the distance for a bit.
A long silence reigned.
"I have a sister", she confessed sadly.
The filly's eyes became as wide as the moon.
"Really?"
A teardrop ran down the monarch's face as she gave a sad nod.
"Bringing the night as well as the stars is her duty. It's just she isn't here right now. She's somewhere far away. And I miss her."
A few more tears rolled down Celestia's face as she confessed the truth.
Twilight's look saddened. "Really? I-I didn't know that.... Where is your sister now?"
Celestia looked up at the starless sky, her look softened a bit.
"That, my faithful student, is a story for another time. I will tell you when I think your ready."
The filly glanced to the side before responding.
"Oh... Okay, princess," she said.
Celestia smiled.
"Cheer up, my little one. Even you should know that you will be destined for something special. And when you find your purpose, you will learn of my beloved sister as well."
Twilight's eyes widened again. "I'm going to be special!?" She asked in a breathless tone. "When? How?"
The white alicorn chuckled. "Twilight, patience please. You will see soon. Time will tell you when it thinks your ready. Alright." Celestia finished while giving her protege a wink.
Twilight only stared in confusion for a second before smiling with a nod.
"Okay, princess."
Celestia
Sorrow.
Guilt.
Pressure.
It was all that she felt.
Since her faithful student Twilight had asked her of the stars, it took Celestia all of her might to not collapse. She had not expected for the filly to ask her such a question but she knew she couldn't lie.
Well for the most part.
But Celestia knew that she was honest. She really did miss Luna. Everytime she came out to raise the moon, her heart would ache when memories of her sister would flood her mind again.
Celestia glanced back at her student.
Twilight was smiling. But it wasn't the happiest.
Celestia wished she could bring the stars somehow just to cheer her filly up. But bringing the night's true glory wasn't her special talent. It was Luna's. So all she could do is wait. Wait some more.
"I wish I could see the stars." Her students voice snapped Celestia's train of thought.
Immediately the sadness was back.
'Me too,' the monarch thought.
Celestia hoped that someday, if she couldn't, then perhaps her student could somehow return Luna to how she used to be. Celestia strongly believed that Twilight would someday become something special. Something extraordinary. Something even better than Celestia. And she would bring an everlasting affect to Equestria in a way in which Celestia never could.
"Will the stars ever come back?" Twilight's voice brought Celestia back to the reality again.
It took several minutes for Celestia's mind to process the filly's question.
"Well yes. Of course they will."
"When, princess?"
Celestia glanced to the side. She then looked up to the sky. Deep down a part of her heart apologized to the night for taking away it's true glory.
"Soon, my faithful student. Soon."
