When Ponyville fell to Zaka's forces, the town was scoured of all things that may have been useful to the invading zebras. This included stores of all goods they could carry, mares that could be pressed into service, and any fillies and colts that were young enough to be trained into service. All stallions, being seen as too hostile to be tamed, as well as any elderly or greatly infirmed, were discarded, as they would not be useful to them. Finally, a good many of the prisoners were released, and encouraged to flee to other towns and break down the Equestrian infrastructure, making it weaker for the zebras.

Among two of those captured were what remained of the Apple family, Applejack and Apple Bloom. They sat in the back of a prison wagon, tied up and gagged. There was still a fair amount of fight left in them, but that was soon to change.
