Laughter’s The Best Medicine, Even For Rainbow Dash

Healing Laughs

It was a lovely morning. The sun shone bright, its golden rays shining down upon the residents of Ponyville. Ponies were trotting through the streets, waving hello to each other and wishing them a happy Hearts and Hooves Day. Everypony was out of their houses, celebrating Hearts and Hooves Day with their kids and loved ones.

However, there was one pony that chose not to go outside, and that pony was Rainbow Dash. The cyan Pegasus was sound asleep in her bed, holding a Pinkie Pie plushie close to her chest. She squeezed the doll and mumbled in her sleep; the mare seemed to be dreaming about something, but whatever it was, nopony would know. After all, Rainbow Dash always liked to keep her dreams a secret.

Suddenly, her rose-colored eyes flew open, and she slowly sat up straight in her bed. Covering her mouth with her hoof, she let out a yawn and stretched her forelegs above her head. Suddenly, she felt something start to creep up her throat. Swallowing hard, she laid back down, letting out a sigh of relief when she felt whatever that was creeping up her throat stop. However, that feeling came back, and she tried her best to gulp it down.

Rainbow Dash felt queasy.

The cyan Pegasus moved to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through her head, causing her to groan in slight agony. Poor Dashie… she just wasn’t feeling well that morning, but why? Could it have been a cold? Or could it have been too much flying around with the Wonderbolts yesterday? Either way, Rainbow Dash didn’t feel like getting up; she felt terrible. Literally.

“Man, this is a rough morning,” she said to herself, her voice sounding quite hoarse. “What in Equestria is wrong with me today? I better not be getting sick. That wouldn’t be twenty percent cooler.”

But unfortunately for her, she was definitely under the weather. She felt very warm, and her voice sounded just… awful. With a groan, she laid back down and tried to go back to sleep, but the pain in her head kept pounding, just like how it felt when somepony was kicking her in the head.

“Oh, geez… can you pleeeease stop it?” she groaned as if talking to her own head. “Argh… stupid, stupid brain.”

She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping that it would help her agonizing headache go away, but it didn’t. In fact, the pounding only grew worse. She was on the verge of tears at this moment, simply wanting her head to just stop hurting immediately.

“There must be something I can do to stop this horrible headache!” she exclaimed, throwing her head back against the pillows. “Ugh… but I’m too tired to even move a muscle!”

“Too tired to… moooove?”

“Hmm?” Rainbow sat up and looked around, wondering who was in the room with her, but she smiled when she saw only her marefriend Pinkie Pie standing in front of her bed with a cheery smile. “Oh… hey, Pinkie Pie,” she said with a groan.

“Good morning, Rainbow Dash!” Pinkie said, grinning at the cyan Pegasus. “Whatcha doing?”

Rainbow sighed. “I’m gonna be doing nothing today…” she whined. “I woke up *cough* with a *cough cough* headache this morning, and I *cough cough cough* don’t feel like *cough* getting out of *cough cough* bed this morning… *cough cough cough*.”

Pinkie frowned, knowing exactly what was wrong with Rainbow Dash.

“Well, Rainbow Dash… that doesn’t sound like a headache to me!” she said. “You are sicker than Winona!”

“Huh?”

“I mean, you are sicker than a dog!” Pinkie said, giggling a bit. “Get it? Sicker? Sicker than a dog?”

Rainbow rolled her eyes. “Yeah, yeah… very funny,” she said. “Look, Pinkie… I’m not really in the mood for jokes.”

“But Dashie, sometimes laughter can help you feel better!” Pinkie said, smiling brightly. “And don’t worry, I have tons of stuff that’ll make you laugh!”

“Pinkie Pie!” Rainbow yelled in a hoarse tone. “I mean, Pinkie Pie… I appreciate you trying to cheer me up like you always do, but uh… I kinda need more than just jokes and good laughs.”

“Oh, I know!” Pinkie said, nodding. “We cannot forget about the non-funny stuff to help you feel better! And look! I’m a nurse, Rainbow Dash! You didn’t see my nurse outfit, did you?”

Rainbow gasped as she looked closely at Pinkie Pie. To her surprise, her marefriend was indeed dressed in a nurse’s outfit; she also wore a stethoscope around her neck and even had some lollipops stored in the pockets of the white lab coat she wore.

“Wow, Pinkie…” Rainbow said, impressed. “You really did dress up, didn’t you?”

“Yep!” Pinkie replied, bouncing up and down. “I’ve wanted to do this for a while.”

“You did?” Rainbow asked. “Aww, that’s so sweet! *cough cough*”

“Well, what I’m about to tell you will not be so sweet,” Pinkie said, sitting down on her marefriend’s bed. “You have… the flu, Rainbow Dash.”

“What?!” Rainbow shouted. “The flu?!?! Oh no no no! What am I gonna do?! It’s Hearts and Hooves Day today, and you expect me to just lay here in bed all day?! I don’t think so! I’d be bored!”

“Aww, don’t be sad, Dashie!” Pinkie said. “I totally promise it’ll be totally fun!”

“Yeah, right.” Rainbow rolled away from Pinkie. “Laying in bed with a bad cold all day is not fun, Pinkie Pie!” she said angrily. “But I’ll do it, anyway. I want to get better, so… how could it get *cough* any worse?”

“Well, how about this?” Pinkie offered Rainbow Dash a lollipop. “We can make it fun, and we can spend our Hearts and Hooves Day all by ourselves! Even if I got sick, I’d prefer to stay in bed with you other than hanging out with all of our friends!”

“Pinkie,” Rainbow began. “I don’t want you getting sick. You said it yourself… the flu is a really bad cold! And you think I’d tolerate you being sick and having to lay in bed with me?! No, no, no! Not a chance. If you got sick, you’d have to sleep in your own bed because I am not sharing my bed with you!”

“Aww… why not, Dashie?” Pinkie asked, unable to keep the wide grin off her face.

“It’s… it’s because it would be warm and fuzzy, and you know I don’t swing that way!” Rainbow sat up and took the lollipop from Pinkie. “Thanks for the lollipop,” she said, calming down. “What flavor is it again?”

Pinkie blinked. “Oh, it’s cherry flavored,” she said. “You love cherries!”

Rainbow laughed. “I sure do,” she said before licking the lollipop. “And it’s one of my favorite fruits… don’t tell anypony, you hear?”

“You told meee, though!” Pinkie said.

“Ugh… okay, I told you,” Rainbow said, rolling her eyes. “Big deal! Anyway, how exactly are we gonna make this whole boring laying-in-bed thing fun? So far, all I wanna do is sleep because this is boring me in ten seconds flat!”

Pinkie cleared her throat, her cheery attitude turning into a more serious one. “If you want to get better, the first thing you have to do is stop talking so much!” she said. “It’ll only hurt your throat more if you keep talking. Secondly, what cures a headache is some medicine and a nice glass of juice! Third, I can help you feel better with just a few laughs! So… what do you say, Dashie?”

Rainbow stared at Pinkie, thinking about how much fun it would be to have her marefriend there to take care of her while she was sick. She loved Pinkie Pie so much; she loved it whenever she was there for her. Taking a deep breath, the cyan Pegasus simply nodded.

“Okay, Pinkie,” she said. “Will you… stay here with me? I could really use some cheering up today, but absolutely no tickling! You know I’m very ticklish…”

“Oh, Dash… of course I won’t tickle you!” Pinkie said. “But are you okay with a hug?”

“Of course,” Rainbow replied. “Bring it in.”

“Oh… but I might catch what you have,” Pinkie said, looking down.

“Well, you know what? I’d rather lay in bed with you if you got sick, too.”

“Really?”

“Uh, no.”

Pinkie giggled. “But is it okay if I sit next to you instead?” she asked.

Rainbow responded with a simple nod. “As long as you use the stethoscope to listen to my heart,” she said. “That’ll tell you just how much I love you, Pinkie Pie.”

“Aww… I love you too, Rainbow Dash!” Pinkie squeaked. “Now give me a hug, or I’ll tickle you!”

Rainbow chuckled and wrapped her forelegs around her marefriend. “I don’t think tickling is necessary…” she said, smiling as Pinkie kissed her nose. “But a hug and a kiss will do. And maybe some laughs as well…”

“Some laughs, huh?” Pinkie said, smiling coyly as an idea came to her. “Well, I’ve got just the thing! TICKLE FIIIIGHT!”

“Aah!” Rainbow exclaimed, laughing as Pinkie pinned her to her bed and began to tickle her. “P-Pinkie!” she yelled. “S-Stop it! I-I told you… n-no tickling!!!”

“You know me, Rainbow Dash!” she said. “I’m all about tickles!!”

“PINKIE PIE!!!”
