It was just another day in the red light district of Manehattan, which was to say the sun was setting as that was when the 'day' truly began for the seedy underbelly of the city. The bright neon signs of nightclubs and strip-joints lit up the darkening sky and bathed the street in their unnatural glow. Bars of ill-repute opened their doors and put out signage and the street filled with the clopping of the hooves of ponies, largely the more wealthy business stallions, as the work day ended and the time for them to 'play' began. It was an all too familiar sight to Chase as he entered the mane drag of the red light district. Even in this swarm of degenerate stallions and mares looking to get their rocks off, getting drunk, enjoying the company of dancing mares or even picking up call fillies and call colts Chase stood out something fierce. Standing nearly a foot above most of the other ponies, bar the occasional larger stallion, wearing a beat-up old hat, heavy saddlebags and dragging a small cart in his wake, the farm stallion stuck out like a sore hoof amid the sea of well-dressed ponies.
It was hardly an issue as he turned off down a darkened alley, heavy saddlebags straddling his sides and a cart trailing behind him. Even if he were to remain in the crowd, no one would ask questions. Most of the ponies were there to partake in illicit activities so no one wanted to ask questions. After all, would you ask questions of others when you were trying to fly under the radar yourself? This was a trip the farm stallion had made so many times he could probably navigate these back streets blind. Left, Right, Right... He came to the back of one of the large nightclubs and was met with an almost equally burly stallion. He shrugged the saddlebags from his back, picking them up and tossing them over the other stallion's back. The other stallion reached back, checking the saddlebags. They were filled to the brim with baggies of white powder, as promised and as regularly delivered for years now.
He grunted his approval of the transaction, tossing a heavy sack of bits into the cart behind Chase. Chase didn't bother counting it, knowing his business partners knew better than to short him. He was more than a regular in the illicit scene of Manehattan, he was the one who kept the parties rolling. The Coke he provided to dealers was the drug of choice of the wealthier ponies partying in the district and his... Other business was rather lucrative too. He navigated the borderline labyrinthine back alleys of the red light district, this time stopping at the back of a rather famous establishment, the most popular strip club in the city, High Tails. A Unicorn met him at the back door of the establishment.
"Hey boss, business goin' smooth as ever?" he asked in an obnoxiously thick Manehattan accent. Chase shrugged, "can't complain, production on the farm has been good. More than enough booger-sugar to keep this place partying until I return next week. How are things running around here?" The unicorn beamed proudly, "things been runnin' like a well-oiled machine boss. The girls are all earning and we haven't had any try to up and quit on us."
Chase nodded curtly, "I see, so I don't need to pick up any more 'marefriends' any time soon... That's good. What about my prize gal? Is Kiwi still pulling in her weight in bits?" The manager of the strip club nodded enthusiastically, "oh yeah boss, that mare is always outdoing herself... He was headed off to get himself a much rarer treat than plowing one of his whores. He was headed to the most shady and secret place in the red light district only a hoofful of ponies knew about.
The draconic being whined in a raspy voice, his body aching all over from the rough capture and constant beatings since. He was ambushed sunning himself on a hot rock in the volcanic wastes to the south. He was a particularly rare specimen. He was no simple dragon but rather a cross-breed. A being known as a Dracony. “I told you to shut yer stupid mouth,” a large grizzled looking unicorn behind the counter shouted at him. “That anti-firebreath spell can only be broken by a skilled unicorn and it’ll wreck yer voicebox as long as it’s active. No one can understand your stupid hissing and wheezing.” Draco simply hissed at him aggressively and rattled his cage, clawing at the bars. “Stupid critter…” the unicorn poacher muttered under his breath.
Chase pulled up in front of the slave market, unhitching his wagon and leaving by the door. He was plenty confident between his own brawn and the shopkeep’s magic any thieves would be truly shit outta luck if they tried anything and theft was bad for business. He’d personally seen the shopkeep leap the counter and throttle a thief once and the next week he had seen the same thief in a cage of his own. Most commonly the slave market traded in exotic species, as procuring ponies no one would look for and who didn’t have some kind of papertrail was harder than simply hunting out beings that didn’t have legal rights in Equestria.
A side effect of the ludicrous amount of illegitimate wealth he had accumulated through his illicit businesses was a constant slide into increasingly depraved activities to keep his interest. Chase’s sins could fill a library of ledgers. It wasn’t like he could spend this wealth in legitimate ways… There was only so much money you could launder through one small farm outside of Manehattan. So trips to the slave market to buy exotic creatures for his farm was not uncommon for Chase. He was probably their top three customers all in one pony.
“Oh, it’s you big guy. Should have known. It’s ‘that day’ isn’t it?” the slave keeper said knowingly, refering to Chase’s once weekly trips into town to sell his drugs and check up on the brothel. Business been slow in the slave trade. No new ponies in a fortnight. We’ve mostly been selling laborer minotaurs but something real special came in just yesterday.”
Chase raised an eyebrow as he was ushered into the back room and shown the Dracony in the cage. His eyes immediately lit up at the sight of this rare, magnificent critter. He gave the cage a small rattle, eliciting a choked hiss from Draco. “Damn, you’ve really outdone yourself this time… I thought these things were just a myth told by heat-crazed adventurers.” Chase said enthusiastically.
“They’re rare to be sure. They only live in the hottest places down south and they need to keep stealthy to avoid the attention of both ponies and dragons, neither is too kind to em. Extremely resilient to damage, extraordinarily flexible and just as smart as you or I… Heck, probably smarter than your farm hick ass,” he said with a small laugh.
Chase chuckled, staring down at the scared Draco, who stared daggers of hate back at him. This was EXACTLY the kind of pet he’d been interested in. Something that could hold up to the ‘punishment’ he had in mind. “Mate, for this you can take every bit in the cart as a down payment… You’ll receive the rest next week, deal?” he said.
“Any other customer who didn’t live in town I’d demand it up front. But with your name being what it is around here and your business interests being in town, I can agree to that.” The slaver said, shaking hooves with Chase. As soon as the agreement was struck he turned back to the Dracony, his horn lighting up and the world going dark for Draco.
‘Great… Just great. I’m probably gonna end up in some kind of pony fighting pit or something, fighting for their weirdo’s entertainment! Or a slave, labouring away until I collapse. Or… Or…!’ Draco thought groggily as he felt consciousness slowly return to him. He could hear the creaking sound of wagon wheels turning as he came to in his cage, now resting in Chase’s wagon.
The wagon groaned a little under the weight of the cage and the Dracony but held up. He hissed loudly, reaching out the front of the cage and trying to swat at Chase’s hinds as he pulled the cart. Sadly for Draco, they were well out of reach. “Awake huh? No matter, we are almost home anyhow, little lizard.” he said, blatant insincerity in his voice. He knew the Dracony didn’t want to be here, but it was part of the game for him to pretend to be kind. “Don’t worry, you’ll love the farm. So much room to roam around in if you behave. Heck, behave long enough and maybe we’ll have the slaver restore your voice, hm? You’d like that, right?”
‘Yeah right,’ Draco thought, settling down in the cage for now, waiting for a better chance to try to make a break for it. Eventually he would have to move him from the cage and that would be his chance. He let himself doze off for now, sparing his strength for when their voyage was over.
When the Dracony opened his eyes it was to the bright orange light of early dawn. He snapped to attention nearly immediately, looking about. He was still in the secure metal cage, however he was no longer in that creaky old wagon. He blinked his eyes a few times, urging them to fully wake up and adjust to the light. When his vision sharpened he was able to make out his surroundings. His cage rested by a pig pen on what was clearly a farm.
He looked about. Catching sight of a barn and a farmhouse. Both of them showed their age, clearly generations old, but were in extremely good condition. They were clearly very well cared for and had constant maintenance. Everything else looked at home on a farm. A chicken coop, a field with a few types of crops growing. Draco couldn’t figure out what use he would be in such a place… Perhaps the farmer intended to put him to work in the fields! ‘Ha,’ he thought, ‘I would simply tear up all his crops if he tried to make me pick them!’
He didn’t have to wonder about his fate for too much longer, as that farm door swung open and the large stallion stepped out, a rope draped over his neck. Chase approached the cage, “how is my little lizard now he’s had a rest? A little less, ‘cagey’ I hope,” he taunted, a certain glee in his tone with his little pun. Draco responded with an almost lazy sounding hissing sound. It was enough to be captive but did this stallion really have to taunt him so? ‘Little lizard?’ How outrageously belittling!
The farmer pulled back the bolt from the cage’s lock and opened the door and Draco shot off. He sprinted out of the cage with a speed he was confident no pony would keep up with! His wings were still bound to his sides with fairly strong ropes in an awkward position he couldn’t quite get at with his claws, but he could probably grind em down against a sharp rock or something.
The train of thought was cut short as a lasso slipped over his muzzle and was pulled tight, stopping him in his tracks! He looked over his back to see the farm pony holding the other end of the rope in his muzzle and pulling. Draco struggled, tugging against it but was slowly dragged back over to the stallion, tearing up the dirt under him as he went.
Once he was face to face with the stallion he tried to hiss through the lasso but couldn’t. Draco was instead met with a heavy blow from one of the hooves to the side of his head… This was nothing like the beatings from his captures, which stung mildly and added up to aches and pains. It felt like he was knocked out of his body for a second before the sensation of being jerked back into it hit a second later, along with the pain.
He whimpered softly, cowering just a little. He certainly wasn’t used to blows like that from a pony’s hooves. “Behave yourself lizard and I won’t have to do that again,” Chase said sternly. He tugged the rope, forcing a defeated Draco to follow him into the barn. Once inside the ropes around his wings were replaced with heavier leather straps, holding them in place to make flight impossible. A thick leather collar was locked in around his neck, as well as a muzzle fitted over his maw.
Draco wondered what fate could be waiting for him that required such bindings until Chase pulled an odd looking thing off of a shelf. It resembled a saddle, almost, but all wrong. The large farm stallion fitted the ‘saddle’ to himself, several straps dangling from his underside. Before he could even try to roll over Chase stepped over him, beginning to fit the straps into place.
Draco scratched out, successfully landing a few scratches on Chase. The stallion’s fur covering was thicker than he expected, as was his hard, leathery skin. He drew blood but not very deeply. Chase’s only response was to bind those claws up too, making it so Draco was now more or less immobile.
