All seemed well. But under the sun kissed heavens ran a cold shiver down the spine of the world. Fall was slowly turning into winter, the many creatures that roamed the land were preparing to hibernate, and the citizens of Ponyville had been living rough for the last week. Their homes and places of work had been obliterated by King Sombra, or at least a version of him from another timeline. While some had been able to seek shelter with relatives in other towns, the majority of the townsfolk weren't so lucky, instead having to either seek refuge in the hospital or Twilight's castle, the only two structures not reduced to ashes capable of holding so many people. Fortunately, rebuilding for a second time in as many months had been sped along by the assistance of the Royal sisters, contributing supplies and manpower in order to have the town rebuilt before the winter chill fully took hold, with construction efforts almost around the clock. No hands had been idle during the reconstruction, and one pair of hands hard at work were those of Peter Parker, once again finding himself playing handyman. Only this time he felt more part of this community, not just a passerby or a stranger. Or even a prisoner. Now he felt some semblance of belonging. And with that came a sense of conviction. “Ok. That should do until the next wood shipment arrives. I need to run over the plans with AJ anyway. Might as well stop for a water break.” Despite the carnage that had unfolded, everyone's spirits seemed to run high. None more so than Peter’s. For months he had felt so isolated in a world not his own, almost leaving his life as a hero behind. But it would seem he could never be done with Spider-Man, even if he tried. That part of him seemed to follow him, even across dimensions. Not only that, but he was able to face his anger and use it in a positive way, saving the residents and others in the process. Maybe he wasn't a monster after all - a thought that brought him some degree of happiness. A quick shake of his water canteen dulled his happiness a tiny bit, as the contents were all but gone. “I could have sworn there was still some left.” “Too far in yer own head again, Pete?” The southern tone of Applejack caught Peter’s attention, in her hand was an extra canteen of water, which he took with gusto. “Thanks AJ. Guess I’ve been doing more work than I thought.” The farmgirl took a seat on the ground, motioning Peter to join her. “Ah don't think it's that. You’ve been workin hard, no doubt, but ya ain't been a one-man crew so to speak. And I’ve seen how strong ye can really be. Ah think yer still recoverin from last week.” Just the mention of those events caused flashes of memories to pass in Peter's mind, making him remember the beating he had taken. Sure, he had been in bigger scraps, but it had been a while. Maybe he was just shaking off the rust? “You might be right. Been awhile since I’ve had to fight that hard. All that healing won’t be helping either. I’ll have to take it easy for a while.” A nudge to the shoulder hinted that Applejack would be keeping a close eye on her friend while he recovered. “Ah’ll hold ya to that. Gotta say, you have been puttin in a lotta work. Sure ya don’t wanna rest up for a bit?” A few drops of water later and Peter got to his feet, ready to continue. “Not until I’ve got these supports finished and checked. Wanna give me a hand?” A firm nod from the farmgirl, signalling the two to get back to work, both grabbing some of the last pieces of wooden supports they had to hand. The day continued to pass on by, only now the light of the sun was fading faster than it had done the week before. Apart from the chill air, it was a sign that winter was on the approach. And so much had still to be done. Buildings were beginning to take shape, but not as they had done before. Looking over the plans, Peter noticed a key addition that was very different from before - A means to utilise electricity. “Must be weird to have the town modernised like this? I heard some of the older folks blew it off.” Having been raised on a farm, Applejack wasn't accustomed to much when it came to more fanciful things like electricity. “Ponyville is an old town, with an old history. Ya might say we've had to do a little catchin up with the rest of the world. And we did it all slowly. This… this aint slow. We aint used to this sorta leap into the future, so ta speak. It’ll take time. Folk here aint like the ones in the big cities.” Even as she looked at the new layout, Applejack found it hard to comprehend. Behind the plain and simple building would run wires and other fixtures. Even the lampposts out on the street would be replaced, their oil burners taken away to be lit by the gentle hum of a lightbulb. All of it began to feel a little overwhelming, even for her. “Ah know we all voted on it, but it feels all so sudden.” Peter thought back on the two months he had lived in Equestria, and all the things he had to adapt to. Now that he thought about it, he was kinda spoiled with how things worked in his world. “I know what you mean. Change like that can feel overwhelming. How's Granny Smith taking it all?” Applejack remembered the talk her family had regarding what was to happen. Though she wasn't thrilled with the result. “Ah would say we had a calm discussion on the matter, but that would require maself or Big Mac gettin a word in. It was more Granny goin on about how the older folk are bein left behind. Even Applebloom got brushed off!”” As the two worked away, Applejack was letting her frustration take over, missing multiple swings of her hammer. Fortunately, Peter was there to keep her right, catching her next botched swing before she damaged anything, or herself. Seeing how worried he was gave Applejack pause allowing her to regain her composure. “You said once that Granny Smith was one of the older villagers, right?” One thing Peter had yet to learn was the intricacies of the three clans. It felt like he knew more about the Alicorn princesses than the people they ruled over. “Yep. We Earth Clan live for quite a long time. Though Granny’s a rare case. Most of us don’t live for as long as she has. Ah get why she's so stuck in her ways, but it gets ma goat everytime we argue. What about you? How long do folk live on your world?” Peter began to wonder how he could answer such a question. People back home weren't exactly like him. “Well, the regular old humans on Earth only live about a hundred years at best. And seeing as I’m not human, I have no idea how long I’ll live for.” Ever since Applejack and her friends had found out Peter's secret, there had been so much more mystery around him. From what they were told, not only was he alien to their world, but to his own as well. She couldn't comprehend just how lonely it must feel. “Did ya ever try and find out where ya came from before? Find out what you are?” Applejack's question gave Peter pause. In truth, he had tried to seek out his origin, only to find more questions with no closure in sight. And those who did have the answers weren't exactly forthcoming. “I did. Never found any answers. Eventually I just gave up.” The truth and a lie all at once, so well mixed that even Applejack herself couldn't tell the difference. So she decided it was best not to pry and move on. Perhaps with time Peter would tell the whole story. But it wouldn't be today. “Why aren't you two wrapped up more?!” Came the quiet yet stern voice of Fluttershy, dressed more appropriately for the incoming weather as opposed to her two friends, wearing only shirts and safety gloves on their top halves. “Looks like my favourite cinnamon roll has as many layers as the real thing.” Peter called out to Fluttershy, who tried to burrow her face into the collar of her jacket to hide her flushing cheeks. “You should be wearing more layers too, mister! And you, Applejack. What if you catch a cold?” The farmgirl, barely feeling a lick of the cold, carried on with her work as if to prove a point. “Quit yer fussin, Fluttershy. I’ll be perfectly fine. As will Pete. We’ll be stoppin soon anyway, what with it gettin late and all.” With the sun now cresting below the horizon, it was time to consider calling it a job well done for the day, brought on more by Fluttershy tossing the pair their jackets. Though his mind wanted to continue and finish at least something, Peter knew his body was more than depleted, which he found odd. But with the ever disapproving stare of Fluttershy setting on him, he had no choice but to relent. “Might as well tidy up and head back. Wonder how everyone else got on today.” TWILIGHTS CASTLE The three friends, tools and supplies in hand, made their way to the castle, which had been used as a base of operations for the rebuilding efforts. And as a refugee camp of sorts. Many of the rooms had been converted into storage, or makeshift bedrooms, mostly for the townsfolk still displaced. Though it was quickly found out that even the mighty castle couldn't hold almost half the town and accommodate supplies and guards, so several townsfolk lined the hallways Royal guards had been stationed within the castle to help oversee things, and to act as extra security should another attack somehow befall them. An officer sat at a desk, tasked with keeping a registry of supplies and tools. Fluttershy began to veer off from the others, heading towards the map room. “You two sign in your gear, and I’ll meet you for dinner.” She left Peter and Applejack to return their tools, something they had to do at the end of each day. Not only that, but they had to document what work they had done and how many supplies they had used. It was a lot more bureaucratic than what Applejack had been used to. Then again, she was pretty much her own boss. “So much darn paperwork. Ah ain't ever seen the like! And what if one day ah make a mistake and have to use extra wood or nails? They gonna write me up for it?” Peter found it a little funny that the farm girl was getting so worked up over something like this. “You aren't used to other people having oversight over your job, are you?” If looks could kill, the stare Peter got from Applejack could have ended him hundreds of times over. Then again, he’d probably survive those too. “The only person ever bossed me about was Granny, and that were so ah could learn how ta run the farm. Nowadays, the only one ah answer to is me. So yeah, ya might say I’m a little pissed that I’m getting told how to work I’ve been doin most of ma life!” Applejack practically shouted the last few words, a few pairs of eyes looking her way, making her feel a little embarrassed and wanting to escape. She hurried towards the map room, Peter following behind apologising to those who were startled. “I get it. You go so long doing your own thing, then have to work as part of a team. And suddenly you're not the master of your own destiny anymore.” “It ain't like that” Sighed Applejack. “I love being part of a team. The girls and I? I'd follow that team anywhere, anytime. But this ain't no team. It's all paperwork and fussin over little things.” Peter had worked with Applejack long enough to know that she was a lenient boss. If the work was done on time and everything was done as it should, she didn't complain. The problem she had here, at least in Peters mind, was the greater extent of micromanagement that came with putting a whole town back together. “Trust me, they don't exactly like it either. But this is an entirely different sort of job. These are people's homes we’re rebuilding, so we have to do it by the book.” Despite her grief with the situation, AJ knew that Peter was right. She began to chuckle, causing Peter to be confused. “Sorry, ah ain't laughin at you. The funny thing is how much you’ve changed bein here. Now you’re the one tryin to keep us on the straight and narrow. Maybe ya needed that fight to get yer head in gear.” It was something Everyone had taken notice of. Ever since his battle with Sombra, Peter had been a lot less reserved with them, more open to even little conversations with people. Much of his past was still a mystery to them, but it was more than the girls had gotten in months. And for them, that was more than enough. Besides, after the whole “alien from another dimension” part came into the light, what else could they ask? ”Might be enough fer most of us, but Twilight might keep pushin him fer more. Might wanna bring that up with her, prevent future drama. Petes done more than enough fer us.” The two pushed open the doors to the map room catching the attention of everyone inside. Celestia and Luna were busy overseeing several documents relating to the town's rebuilding efforts, while Cadence played with Flurry Heart, the latter of which made a beeline for Peter as soon as she spotted him. “Well hello to you too, Flurry! Look at you, all wrapped up for the weather.” The infant princess had on about three layers of clothing to keep her insulated from the oncoming cold. Perhaps a little excessive, but Peter wasn't about to tell Cadence how to best look after her own daughter. One thing he had noticed over the past week was that Cadence had been spending even more time around Flurry, and in return the baby girl had been seeking the attention of her parents. Perhaps as a reaction to the events from a week ago. Rarity was also in the thick of paperwork herself, having agreed to help oversee parts of supply shipments as well as the funding that would have to come back into the town once things were rebuilt, a task she was doing in tandem with other business owners. Rainbow Dash was decked out in similar work gear as AJ and Peter, doing her own part with the labour involved to put things back together. Though she had to be slow and methodical like everyone else, which irked her somewhat. Fluttershy put her reserved nature aside to hand out food and water to everyone, or to remind them to keep warm now that the weather was changing. Though some took that advice more than others. And Pinkie did what she did best - keep everyone in high spirits. “Welcome back, you two!” Chirped the pink haired party planner, ever happy to see her friends. “I made up some warm cocoa for everyone, so help yourselves. There's plenty to go around!” A warm drink sounded amazing right now, so Peter and AJ grabbed the biggest glasses they could and filled up, Peter making sure to grab a smaller cup for Flurry. Over at the map table, Twilight was glancing over a bunch of new notes she had been scrolling down, mingled in with plans for Ponyville's renovations, all dedicated to the workings of Peter's web shooters. While the intriguing gadgets had survived the battle with Sombra, they had taken more than a few beatings, largely unnoticed until the fight was over. With Peter being so focused on assisting with the work around town, Twilight had been using her spare time to look through the notes so she could learn how to repair them. “You know Peter, for such a simple sounding concept. You sure made these web shooters complicated to maintain. So many small, moving parts.” Though Twilight was always eager to learn new things, it seemed that the technical aspect of the shooters were a little out of her wheelhouse. She could take as many notes as she wanted, but she couldn't quite piece together the intricate mechanism that Peter had weaved to make the shooters work, earning more than a few chuckles around the room as her friends and family found her struggle a little amusing. So often it was Twilight who had all the answers, now here she was practically pleading for help. Fortunately, Peter was more than happy to assist, picking up the tiny pieces and slotting them into place without even thinking about it. “Believe me, I didn't have much fun figuring all this out either. But I had to try and minimise the components as much as I could while retaining the capacity to some degree. My first set of shooters were bulky, and much more prone to faults.” “How many times have you redesigned them?” Asked Twilight, her curiosity returned now that she wasn't struggling anymore. Years of designing spider gadgets flashed across Peter's mind, some he’d rather forget. “At least half a dozen. It took me about a year to get the parts to even come close to making them more compact. Helps when you get a job at a big tech company.” The last part was said with some degree of smug satisfaction, all while Peter sipped on his cup of cocoa and had Flurry nestled into his chest, clutching her own cup. “Pray tell, Peter. What sort of company did you work for? I never pegged you as someone to work for a corporation.” Rarity chimed in, her business laden mind piping up as she multitasked between listening in and helping with paperwork. In the past this was the point where Peter would have shut down, giving vague answers. It would seem this time was about to be different. “It's called Wayne Industries. They specialised in tech that would help people - medical care, space exploration, environmental protection, that sort of thing. Their science sector was one of the best in the world. When I got the opportunity for a scholarship with them, I jumped at the chance. Besides, the only other option was Os- some other place that didn't have what I was looking for.” The stumble that Peter made didn't go unnoticed. And while everyone wanted to know why, they figured it wasn't a good idea. “So why did ya go fer Wayne Industries? What made them stand out?” Applejack quickly got the conversation back on track, Peter letting out a sigh of relief, but his features still held some sadness in them. “Because they only made things to help people. To benefit lives. They didn't make things to kill people.” And slowly, more of the veil fell away. The way in which Peter spoke made the girls remember that there was still so much they didn't know. And made a few of them wonder if they would ever get the full story. Unfortunately, any further conversation was cut short by the doors to the room bursting open, with Shining Armour, Spike, and a few guards walking in, all carrying plates. “Ladies, and Peter - dinner is served!” A joyous cry went out while everyone found a spot to eat. Twilight and her friends made use of the map table, while the elder princesses had a temporary dining table set up, though most of it was covered in logistics. The boys, joined by Flurry, parked themselves on the floor in a little huddle. While there was still food to eat, lack of storage meant that whatever came in had to be given out equally from the kitchens. And despite being royalty, the princesses were more than happy to agree to this concession while they operated in Ponyville. A trait Peter very much respected them for. It wasn't the most 5 star banquet you'd ever see, but it was enough to warm bellies and make them feel content. Despite the work ahead and the chill of winter setting in, there was little reason for sadness in Ponyville. And for Peter, it finally felt like he could start living again. Author's Note And we are... BACK! I know it was a long wait, but here we are with the start of Season 2. Not exactly back with a bang, but our heroes need a little break, dont they? Episode 2 - Parent TrapEpisode 2 - Parent Trap Daylight crept through Equestria, despite the dark blanket of grey clouds that now covered the skies. As far as the eye could see, snow descended gently to the ground. While the Pegasi had done their best to keep the snow away from Ponyville as long as possible, even their efforts couldn't stand up to nature for long. Winter had finally arrived. And while much work had been completed in the weeks since Ponyville's destruction, many homes were still unfinished. While everyone was still determined to see everything completed, it would be a lie to say that the joyful spirit of the season hadn't sunk in yet for most. Even those whose homes had been finished had lost belongings, memories; things that couldn't be replaced. The military element didn't help either, though it had been reduced now that any retaliation seemed unlikely. It didn't hurt that a certain someone had a danger sense, and whose all clear had given Celestia peace of mind to begin winding down troop presence. Speaking of which, Peter had still been hard at work alongside Applejack for weeks now. This time the two were wrapped up in more than one layer of clothing, unable to begin work unless they were, lest they suffer the quiet wrath of Fluttershy. Though even Peter had to admit he was starting to feel the winter’s cold sting. Today they had help from Spike and Applebloom, the two kids mostly carrying around smaller tools along with other various bits and pieces, all while getting lost in talks about something called Hearth’s Warming Eve, which to Peter sounded an awful lot like Christmas. “It's a shame you weren't around a few years ago, Peter.” A gleeful Spike said. “We put on this big show in Canterlot about Hearth’s Warming, all the tribes coming together. And I got to narrate it!” The half drake definitely took pride in the little things from what Peter could tell. Spike was someone who took pride in helping where he could, be his role big or small. Much like today when he volunteered to assist Peter and AJ. Though that came with Twilight playing big sister and insisting Spike be wrapped up extra on account of his cold blooded tendencies. Likewise, Applebloom, at the insistence of her older sister, had maybe more layers on than what was needed. Any movement was hindered by the sheer amount of clothing she had on. Nearby, a bell began to ring, signalling the lunch break for the day. “Alright you two, scamper off. You’ve been more than helpful today.” Applejack called out to the two kids. They ran off, bumping into some of the other kids on the way there, while she and Peter packed away their tools. “Gotta say, it's gonna be a weird Hearth’s Warming this year. Half the town’s still gone, so we might be seein’ a smaller celebration this year.” Applejack lamented as she put her tools back in the toolbox, a quiet sadness underneath her words. Peter didn't know much about the event, but it seemed like a big deal. Before his secret was made known, Peter would have to pretend he knew all about Equestria and play along as a regular inhabitant. Now he had the luxury of just asking. “So what is Hearth's Warming anyway? Cause’ it sounds a lot similar to a holiday we have back on Earth. People get together, spend the holiday with family, exchange gifts, that sorta thing. But from what Spike said, there's more to it.” “Hearth’s Warming Eve is one of our oldest traditions, going back to the founding’ of Equestria.” Applejack began to tell the tale. “Thousands of moons ago, before even the princesses ruled the land, the three Clans lived divided from one another. And cause’ of that division, the land was covered in constant snowfall as Windigos raced through the skies. Hearth’s Warming celebrates the day the three tribes finally unified, and the Windigos disappeared. Legends say the snowfall every winter is them tryin’ to come back, so we celebrate together to ward them off again. So, what's your winter holiday like?” Looking over, Applejack was greeted with the flabbergasted look on Peter's face, who had been enamoured with the short but sort of epic tale. “Uh, depends on who you ask. Where I lived, we celebrate Christmas. Which is… kind of a mish mash of things. It used to be a Pagan thing, then it got co-opted to celebrate the Son of God, then good old capitalism took over. Now it's mostly about the presents.” “Sounds… confusing.” Was all Applejack could reply with. It didn't help that there was only so much Peter could say to explain this “Christmas” without a lengthy lesson on Earth’s history (which he had been tempted to do many times now). As the two went to join the others for food, a voice shouted out towards them, one Peter didn't recognise, but Applejack seemingly did. “Hello Applejack!” The farmgirl did her best to peer through the snowfall and see who was calling out to her. It took a few more steps before she recognised who it was, and was surprised at the reveal. “Windy? What in the blazes are ya doin’ here? Thought you’d be back in Cloudsdale hunkerin’ down fer the winter!” The two hugged like old friends, leaving Peter to guess who she was. Whoever she was, Windy appeared to be a bit older from what Peter could gleam. What he didn’t know was who she was in relation to the others. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait long to find out thanks to Applejack. “Oh, where are ma manners? Windy, this here is Peter, the newest addition to Ponyville. Peter, this is Windy Whistles, Rainbow Dash’s mom.” Now that she mentioned it, Peter was examining Windy more closely, beginning to see the resemblance. “It's nice to meet you, ma’am.” Peter extended his hand, which Windy took with great fervour, catching even someone with his strength off guard. “No need for such formalities, Peter. Windy is just fine. A new addition, you say? Where do you come from originally?” It was one thing for Applejack, the other girls and the princesses to know Peter's origins. But bringing their parents into it all wasn't on the cards. His mind drew a blank. It had been so long since he had to lie to someone about his secrets. What should he say? “He can't remember.” Applejack cut in. “When Pete arrived here, he was badly hurt. So bad, that he lost his memory. We’ve been keepin’ an eye on him ever since, makin’ sure he feels right at home.” Some of it was true, but still enough of a lie for Applejack to feel immensely guilty. Not that Windy could tell. She believed every word of it. “I'm so sorry to hear that. Well aren't you lucky, Peter? Ponyville might just be the best place for you to have ended up. I should find my husband. He’ll wanna say hello too!” Windy unfurled her wings and took off, though not as speedily as her daughter would have. Looking back at Applejack, Peter could see the guilt on her face. “Sorry you had to lie for me AJ. I just didn't know what to say.” The steadfast farmgirl waved her hand, as if to brush off her own feelings about the situation. “Don't worry about it. I’d prefer our families not know about yer secrets. It’s bad enough Granny found yer gear. But if ah can help it, Applebloom and Big Mac won’t know a thing. It’s the least we can do ta give ya some kinda normalcy here.” Now Peter was starting to feel guilty. “You shouldn't have to lie to your family for me. None of you should.” Despite his attempts to remove Applejack’s guilt, it only seemed to infuriate her. “Lemme tell ya somethin’, Pete. Ah ain't no celebrity, or royalty or anythin‘ like that. But me and the gals have saved Equestria enough times fer me ta be recognised outside Ponyville. And ah don't like it, the whole bein’ worshipped thing. You have no idea how badly ah wish ah had a mask to hide behind when I’m out there.” And just like that, it all came flooding back. Peter was beginning to remember why he wore a mask in the first place: the struggle to have some kind of normal life. And now here he was, almost ready to throw it all away. Was he getting too complacent? Too safe? “I never had to lie to my own family. My aunt who raised me knew from the first moment I decided to be Spider-Man. It made it all just that a little bit easier.” While Applejack understood where Peter was coming from, it did little to change her mind. “Ah do hate keepin’ secrets from them. But this one’s fer a good reason. Maybe one day, but not right now. Not when people don’t even know ya that well.” The silhouettes of two figures appeared from the snowfall, revealing Windy and someone who looked much similar to Rainbow Dash than what her mother did. “You remember Bow, don't you, Applejack?” Windy inquired in her chipper tone. Bow, who Peter could only assume at this point to be Dash's dad, stared in disbelief at the farmgirl. “Applejack? Could that really be you? Why, I haven't seen you since you were knee high!” “It’s sure has been a while, Bow. Ever since ah took over the farm, I’ve been kinda locked here in Ponyville. And when ah do get out, it’s ta fight some far off evil. And then all this happenin’.” A motion of her hand pointed out towards the slowly returned town of Ponyville. Just the mention of its destruction made the smiles on Windy and Bow’s faces turn to frowns. “We only heard about what happened a few weeks ago, so we had to visit and make sure our little Dashie was A-Ok!” Bow commented, his smile returning at the mention of his daughter, as did Windy’s. “Well, Dash should be on the other side of town right about now helpin’ out the other teams. If ya spot Scootaloo, Dash won't be too far behind.” Applejack pointed out the way, in the vague direction of where Rainbow Dash could be. Peter knew fine well the rainbow haired Pegasus could be anywhere in the blink of an eye if she desired. As Windy and Bow ventured off to find their daughter, Peter gave Applejack a smirk. “Our little Dashie? I can't wait to use that one on her.” An elbow into his ribcage should have dissuaded Peter from any attempt to irritate the Pegasus with her parents pet name, but the idea sat ever present in his mind. “Just cause ya survived Sombra don't mean a pissed off Dash won’t end ya,” warned Applejack, giving Peter a very stern look. Out of the mist came Rainbow Dash, looking rather alarmed. “Hey you two! Better head over to the castle! We have company.” A sinister smile formed across Peter's features, his opportunity to annoy Dash now right in front of him. Before he could get a word out, Dash had already taken off towards Twilight's castle. “Gotta be quicker than that, Pete.” Scoffed Applejack, perhaps speaking from experience. Heeding Dash's words, the two made their way through the snow towards the castle, collars turned up as the blizzard picked up. *** The walk back was longer than expected on account of the snow now blistering through the air. While Peter could easily have pushed on ahead, he wasn't the biggest fan of leaving Applejack on her own, even if the likelihood of something happening was small. Sticking together was the best idea. The farmgirl was feeling the effects of the weather much more vividly than her friend. Even the layers of clothing did little to help her. “Ever seen snow this hostile? Could almost swear the Windigos were comin back!” Applejack cried out, her voice almost drowned out by the wind. Peter by comparison was laser focused on getting to the castle, the chilling bite of the cold having seemingly no effect on him. Applejack could have sworn she saw steam drifting from his face, the only visible part of his skin she could see. Was his skin really that warm? “We had a few winters like this back in my world. I woke up the next morning and Queens was under several inches of snow. Back when I was at school, every time it snowed I knew I was getting a day off. My Aunt and Uncle would take me outside all wrapped up so we could play and build snowmen. I might have wrecked a few of them though.” It was so surreal to Applejack to hear all these little pieces about Peter's past. It was also refreshing given how much he kept close to his chest even now. She didn't get to think about it long as a mighty gust of snow threatened to knock her off her feet. Fortunately she was more sure-footed than most, though it really did seem like something was controlling the weather and giving them what for. A firm hand had fallen on her shoulder, Peter making sure she didn't get knocked over, a gesture that while unnecessary was appreciated. Dim lights in the blizzard marked their destination. A welcome sight. One final push through the bronze doors later and the pair were in the clear, snow falling off their clothing and onto the floor. “Land sake! Thought we were gonna be buried out there fer sure!” Shaking the snow from her, Applejack tossed her jacket aside rather ungraciously. It landed at the feet of a waiting Rarity, quite possibly the worst person to have done it in front of. “Applejack, what shame! I gave you this coat specifically for such weather! Even if it has been tested to some degree.” Tested was an understatement. Rarity could feel the sheer amount of moisture the jacket now held due to the blizzard, which was something she hadn't figured to account for when she made it. “Well, I suppose I’ll have an excuse to make a new one, should this weather be the norm. Oh Peter, how did yours fare?” Same as with Applejack, a pool of water had formed at Peter's feet. However, when Rarity began to help him remove his jacket, she was surprised to discover that it was bone dry. Which made little sense to her - both jackets were made the same. In fact, Applejack’s had been the basis for her to make one for Peter, given they had matching builds to a degree. “Peter darling… How in Equestria is your jacket dry?” Rarity asked with some mild confusion. And once again, Peter gave the girls a little breadcrumb. “Oh yeah, I figured out that my Berserker thing actually raises my body heat. It’s the first time I’ve been able to test if it can dry me. Guess it works like a charm!” While it may have felt normal for Peter to just mention his new power-up, Rarity couldn't help but remember weeks ago when he used it to fight Sombra. For months she had known Peter as laid back and quiet, with a good heart to match. But what she saw that day scared her. Sometimes when she looked at him, she saw that faint red glow behind his eyes. “ I see. Are you sure it's wise to use such a thing as a personal heater? I don't mean to sound rude but, last time you used it you were quite… violent?” She did have a point. Peter could still remember the sheer rage he felt while battling Sombra. In his own mind he didn't have much choice - he had almost died during that fight. Getting angry was the only option he had. “I suppose I shouldn't just use it all the time then. But honestly, I feel like I've gotten a handle on it now.” While Rarity was sure he was telling the truth, a part of her preferred to never see Peter like that ever again. She wasn't the only one however. “You sure you wanna use something like that as a party trick, Pete? Ah get its cold, but somethin’ like that shouldn't be misused.” If Applejack was feeling uneasy about it too, then it stood to reason that the other girls were also in that camp. “I get it might be wrong to misuse it, but I feel like everytime I do, I get used to it more and more. And honestly, if someone like Sombra comes along again, then I gotta get a handle on it.” Even if they found Peters Berserker form offputting, it was nothing compared to the raw fear the girl felt when Sombra put their town to the torch. “Ah suppose. Just keep it to a minimum. Ah think ah speak for all of us when ah say that yer brown eyes are easier to look at. The red is… a tad evil.” Applejack was aware that Peter’s power was something he had to figure out his own way, but he in turn understood that it was a violent power. “I’ll do what I can. And I promise not to look eeeeeeeeviiiiiil.” He shouted in a cartoonish tone, getting a laugh out of the girls. “Very well then. Now, both of you to the map room. We have guests!” Rarity chirped before turning heel. “Oh we know. We bumped into Windy and Bow back in town.” Commented Applejack, prompting a raised eyebrow from Rarity. “Not just them, my dear. Seems everyone's parents got wind of what happened. And unfortunately, it seems that word of our new costumed friend has gotten out. It would be best to prepare for any questions we get asked.” Peter had wondered how long it would take for word of his persona to start spreading, especially with it being accompanied by the destruction of a whole town. “No one’s said anything, have they?” He inquired, curious to if the other girls had trusted their families with news of his secret. Rarity looked quite shocked at the idea. “Heavens no. I understand we came across your secret through happenstance, but it should spread no further for your own sake, Peter dear.” As she walked away, Peter's eyes turned to Applejack, her expression suggesting that her advice from earlier was already being shared by the others. So for now, Peter would have to continue the charade he had kept up for so many years. Though in hindsight, their point made sense. He had already made enemies here, even if most of them had been dealt with one way or another. “Ah did tell ya, Pete. And they know it too. Heck, even Dash promised she wouldn't say anything. And that gal tends to be loose-lipped about most things.” All Peter could give was a weak nod. For a moment he thought he could be done with the secrecy and just live in the open. From the looks of things, it wasn't that time yet. The two followed Rarity's trail, leading them to the familiar sight of the map room. Peter instantly spotted Rainbow Dash with her parents, as well as Scootaloo. Windy and Bow seemed to be giving the younger Pegasus a lot of attention, which she seemed to take in stride. Peter never did ask if she was related to Dash in some way, given that he had spotted them spending a lot of time together. Rarity had joined her sister Sweetie Belle with their parents, both dressed just as fashionable as their elder daughter always was. Peter realised there and then that he actually hadn’t interacted with Sweetie or Scootaloo to any great degree. Then again, he was either with their sisters or on the farm. Pinkie had a few individuals surrounding her. Caught in her vice grip hug were two women who looked roughly the same age. Sisters perhaps? The parents were the most interesting sight in Peter's mind, seeing as they were dressed so plainly. If they were her parents. Given their appearance, they were easily the oldest couple in the room, and dressed like they were from the Amish community, which reminded Peter of an old song from back home. Twilight's parents looked just as distinguished as Rarity’s, but in a way that screamed humble middle class family as opposed to the more out there way. Spike and Applebloom talked next to Big Mac and Granny Smith, both likely having been roped in to make this family ensemble complete. And finally, there was Fluttershy, dressed in an oversized sweater, the colour matching her light pink hair. Peter could feel himself practically staring at her, thinking about how lovely she looked. Once she looked around however he pulled his gaze away. Though she could tell, prompting her cheeks to flush. “I really hope no one saw me just stare at her.” Peter wished to himself. Unfortunately, Applejack was standing right next to him and saw the whole exchange. “Ya know, it is rude to stare.” She told him rather bluntly, catching Peter off guard. “I wasn't staring at anyone!” Easily the worst lie the farmgirl had heard in some time. “Yeah, right. Come on, start talkin’ to the folk rather than gawking all night. Maybe introduce yourself ta Fluttershys folks first. Mind her brother though. He's… an ass.” With that glowing endorsement, Applejack walked off to join the others, leaving Peter to find the courage to speak to Fluttershy and her family. Once he looked back, he still found Fluttershy looking his way, as if she was hoping he would walk over. “Guess I’m talking to her parents. Yay.” Once it was clear he was making his way over, Fluttershy's eyes widened, excitement filling her body. But also some form of dread. “Hey Peter. I'm glad you made it through the blizzard ok!” She stepped forward, going for a motion to reach out for a hug. But something stopped her halfway through, her arms dropping back to her side. Something Peter took notice of. “You ok there?” His attentiveness caused her cheeks to flare more, a feeling she was trying so hard to throw off. “Of course. I just wanted to make sure you were ok.” Her soft, caring voice made Peter's heart skip a beat or two, especially with how she was looking at him. The two couldn't take their eyes off each other. “Well now. whoooooo might this be, oh sister of mine?” Thankfully, someone decided to break their attention from each other. Even if that someone irked Fluttershy something fierce. “Peter, this is my younger brother, Zephyr. Zephyr, this is my friend Peter Parker.” A raised eyebrow from her sibling indicated that Zephyr didn't believe the “friend” part of the introduction. “Friend eh? So Peter, how long have you and my big sis been dating?” Everyone's attention was fully aimed towards Peter and Fluttershy at the very mention of the word “dating”. “What's this? Are you two together?! Oh I knew you would make a lovely couple!” Rarity screamed at the top of her lungs, further embarrassing Fluttershy, currently doing her best to mumble a response. “I… umm…” Before anyone could comprehend it, Fluttershy had sped her way out of the room, impressively fast, leaving Peter the centre of attention. “What she meant to say was that her brother was just making things up. We aren't dating.” A heavy sigh left Rarity's body. “What a shame. You two always look adorable together.” While Peter outwardly was delighted with the idea, inside he resented the very idea of being romantically involved with anyone. “I might have been here a while, but not long enough to forget that day. And what happened to her.” “I'm so sorry, my dear fellow. Zephyr here can be just a tiny bit… blunt, I suppose.” Said the older man that Fluttershy was talking to. Given his slight resemblance to Fluttershy, Peter could only assume that this was her dad. “Don’t worry about it. I guess I should introduce myself. The name is Peter Parker.” The two men shook hands, with Peter noticing that Fluttershy's dad had a rather light grip. Or was he just so used to guys stronger than him that he was numb to anything less? Then again, Windy gave him quite the handshake earlier. “The name is Gentle Breeze. This is my dear wife, Posey. You’ve already been introduced to our son, Zephyr.” “Quite the amazing and extraordinary son, wouldn't you say dad?” Zephyr yelled out, an air of arrogance around him. It was clear that Fluttershy's little brother was far removed from the kind, humble soul that his older sister had. Something about it rubbed Peter the wrong way. “So Zephyr, I'm guessing you must help out just as much as your sister does?” Figuring that a quick prod would get something of value, Peter began to quiz Zephyr on his background. “Oh you know, I do a little work here, a few jobs there. I can never decide where my gifts are best suited.” While Zephyr tried to view it as one way, Peter was able to see right through his bluster. “So what I'm hearing is, you can't keep a job.” “That's not how it is at all! I merely haven't found what I'm good at yet! No job is quite suited for how overqualified I am for them! I would have tried my hand in the weather facilities, but my application always gets rejected. It's a shame. More time with my gal Rainbow Dash would be a dream come true!” A quick glance towards Dash told Peter everything he needed to know. The pegasus was red in the face, and not in the same way Fluttershy was. If there was one thing Peter understood, it was abject rage. “Riiiiight. Well, I gotta head to the kitchens. Food ain't gonna eat itself you know.” As Peter left the room, the others returned to their conversations from before, just with a new topic on everyone's lips. Once he was outside, he took a breath, thinking about Fluttershy's reaction to ideas of the two dating. “Guess she's just as scared of me as the others are, if what Rarity said is true.” As he walked away, the door to the map room opened again. But rather than following Peter, whoever stepped out walked the other direction. TWILIGHT'S CASTLE, LIBRARY Deep in the recesses of the castle, Fluttershy hid away as best she could, still in tears over her brother's outburst. She wasn't sure what she was more upset over - the insinuation or the fact that it was untrue. But was it right for her to have these sorts of feelings for Peter? She had only known him a few months, and it was possible he had someone waiting for him back on his world, just never talking about it. Her thoughts were broken by the door opening, a familiar voice ringing out. “Fluttershy? Are you here?” While she wanted to hide away longer, she knew she couldn't hide forever. “Over here, Twilight.” The Princess of Friendship quickly found her friend at the furthest corner of the room, taking a seat next to her. “You missed Peter chewing out Zephyr. I think you would have approved.” The thought of her little brother trying to pull his usual song and dance with Peter of all people did bring a smile to her face. It faded just as fast just at the thought of him. “Why do I feel like this? It still feels like we just met him.” “I might have had my fears about Peter. But as it turns out, when you get right to his heart, he just wants to help people. Something you’ve always done, even when it involves putting yourself out there. You both have such a big thing in common. And admittedly, he's kinda easy on the eyes.” The two women agreed, giggling with each other. “Do you think he’d feel the same? I know he might have someone else back home… Oh, I'm so selfish!” Tears started to flow again from Fluttershy's eyes. Twilight, sensing her friend wasn't in the best frame of mind, pulled her in close to comfort her. “I’m sure he thinks you're wonderful, as we all do. Out of all of us you’ve shown him the most kindness, as you always do. You’ve made him feel the most welcome, and I know he appreciates that.” As always, the Princess of Friendship knew what to say to lift the spirits of her friends. Fluttershy, her confidence coming back just a little, dried off her eyes and got to her feet. “You’re right. I should just focus on being a good friend for now. If something comes of it, then I’ll figure out the next step from there. Come on. We should head back and say hello to everyone!” Twilight was rather impressed with just how quickly Fluttershy bounced back. But as the pegasus exited the library, part of her did wonder how much of that was false courage. “I hope you both find your way to each other somehow.” Author's Note Well, that took forever. Nice to be back everyone. Another light chapter while we get reaquianted with our cast of characters! Episode 3 - Oh BrotherEpisode 3 - Oh Brother “Alright Dash! You asked for this war, so you better be ready for it!” Peter cried out, snowball in hand. With the weather having subsided a little, the entirety of Ponyville was now coated in layers of snow, something the group was now taking advantage of. Everyone had gathered outside the castle, playing in the snow. It didn't take long for things to get competitive however. The real trouble for Peter was how he would be able to contend with Dash and not give up his secret. With the girls' families still around for the holiday season, there was little talk of anything Spider-Man related, and purposefully so. With her folks staying at her boutique, Rarity had to move anything she was working on out of her home and into a room in the castle that was deemed inaccessible. The need for secrecy wasn’t the most pleasant, but everyone agreed that it was still necessary. It just meant that Peter was likely going to have to take a snowball or twenty just to play the part. “Oh I'm more than ready, Peter. Just don't come crying to me with surrender when you can't land a hit!” The upside, at least for Dash, was that she was able to pretty much be herself and get this one moment. The two were joined by others to make up teams. Fluttershy had of course joined Peter's team, as did Applejack and Applebloom, the former of which wanted any opportunity to get one over on Dash. The Pegasus on the other hand was joined by Scootaloo, the sister duo of Rarity and Sweetie and perhaps the most dangerous of all, Pinkie Pie. Those not participating stood off to the side to avoid the line of fire, Twilight standing in the middle to act as referee. “Ok everyone! Now remember, the only hits that will count are below the neck and above the waist. And I mean it, Rainbow Dash!” Several dozen pairs of eyes fell on the tomboy Pegasus, a harsh blush on her tanned face. “That was ONE time, Twilight! And he deserved it. Besides, I’m sure Parker over there will put up a better show.” A clear nod to Peter's own abilities, but ones he was unable to show off without raising suspicion. If the other team got a lock on him, he had to take it. At the blow of a whistle, snowballs started flying, Dash showing off her superior speed. The Apple sisters had to hunker down and pick their openings carefully, given they wouldn't be able to react in time. Fluttershy, being light on her feet, was to the surprise of many doing very well. Even the highly skilled Rainbow Dash was unable to get a hit on her longtime friend. Peter fell somewhere in the middle by choice, having to go by what he saw rather than what he could sense, which was no small feat given how heavily he relied on his Spider-Sense for anything. One or two dodges would look cool. Anymore than that and eyebrows would raise, forcing Peter to often take cover when he knew he was being targeted. Which was often the case. It appeared as if Dash was taking advantage of the obvious handicap. She had seen how fast he could move, but also knew he couldn't show off. If Peter was knocked out, the rest would be easy. Or so she thought. Out of the four members of the opposing team, Fluttershy was trying her best to take out Dash the most. Apparently, it seemed that the most reserved member of the group had found some new streak of confidence, from what Dash could see. “I’ve never seen Flutters this competitive. She's gotten awfully confident with Peter around. I might actually have to work for the win this time. Good. I was hoping for some excitement today!” While the two Pegasi contended with each other, Peter turned his focus to the others. Rarity and Sweetie already had snow ammo in hand, glaring at him in case he made a move. “I would strongly advise that you surrender, Peter. It would be quite ungentlemanly of you to strike a lady. Even if it is just with snow.” The older of the sisters shouted across, doing her best impression of a damsel in distress, perhaps hoping to catch Peter's more heroic sensibilities. The two projectiles that caught her on each arm put those thoughts to rest;Rarity was out. A distracted Sweetie Belle followed suit as a well timed throw from Applebloom caught her in the chest. The youngest Apple sibling and Peter shared a quick thumbs up to celebrate their victory, only to have that feeling melted away as Applejack was sniped coming from behind her cover, half a dozen snowballs all hitting her in the chest and abdomen in quick succession. Peering over, Peter spied the culprit: a well armed Pinkie Pie. “Sorry Applejack! I had to get revenge for Rarity and Sweetie!” A disheartened Applebloom shuffled closer to Peter. “That Pinkie’s gonna be trouble if we don't deal with her! Plus, we still got Scoots to deal with too.” Peter nodded in agreement, knowing that if Pinkie were left unchecked, she would do more damage to their team than Dash ever could. Trouble was, how to remove her from the game? Peter had an idea, but it would be very risky. It would however check a lot of boxes at once. ”I'll get her attention. Once she's distracted, take your shot and make it count!” The young girl nodded, her hands locked and loaded with icy ammo. Peter did the same, standing and firing wildly in Pinkie's general direction. The pink haired baker dodged every shot immaculately, returning fire as soon as all shots had passed her by. The world seemed to slow down for Peter as the snowballs approached him. He knew that it would be so simple to move out of the way. But with the way he had left himself open on purpose, it would look far too good. Every single shot Pinkie fired hit dead centre of her target, shouts of glee echoing out from her. Until she felt herself be pelted by two shots. “Sorry Pinkie, ya took yer eye off the game!” Applebloom had followed through on the plan. Now it was down to just her and Fluttershy against Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo, but it seemed that the contest was no longer something the two kids could keep up with. The two older Pegasi were going all out against each other, and had even taken to abandoning their protective walls. Projectiles flew past even the bystanders, with Zephyr taking a few hits that looked suspiciously on the mark. Given their speed, it was hard to keep up with just what was going on, leaving the audience wondering what was happening. Only Twilight and Peter could keep track of who was where at any one time, the latter of who had become very impressed with how well Fluttershy was doing. “I've seen Dash move. That race we had is still stuck in my brain. I never took Flutters for being competitive. But I gotta admit… It's awesome to see.” Unexpectedly, the two stopped moving. The reason for which was across their clothing - both girls had tagged each other at the same time from the looks of things. The two were out, leaving just Applebloom and Scootaloo to decide the game. Peter figured that the younger Pegasus might have this in hand, but over the months he had lived in Ponyville he had noticed Scootaloo was slower than the others her age, and her wings appeared smaller. Was she just a late bloomer, or was it something else? Despite her disability, Scootaloo still moved faster than her Earth Clan opponent, dodging every throw aimed at her. Applebloom, despite being slower, appeared to be more methodical. Rather than throwing and hoping for the best, she meticulously chose her shots well, trying to hit Scootaloo not at where she might be, but where she was going to be, trying to use her speed against her. Scootaloo however was just throwing and praying, though this meant Applebloom spent most time behind cover, only getting a chance when her opponent ran out of ammo. In a stunning display of tactics, Applebloom stood over the ice wall and fired two snowballs at once in opposite directions just as Scootaloo began to move, catching her by surprise as one of the shots caught her on the arm. She was out, and the game was over. The victorious Applebloom jumped into the arms of her older sister, the siblings taking in their victory. Fluttershy, attention still focused on the game until its end, seemed to have snapped out of her competitive trance, her cheeks ablaze with red. “I'm so sorry, Dash. I don't know what came over me. I’ll understand if you're mad at me. I know you like to win.” Much to Fluttershy's surprise, her friend pulled her in for a bone crushing hug. “Are you kidding? I’ve never been more happy to lose. I got to see you give it your all, Flutters! I've never seen you go that fast for anything!” Fluttershy and Dash's parents had come over to congratulate the two, Peter even managing to steal a gaze from the pinked haired Pegasus and share a smile with her. “Well, I must say that I’ve never seen Fluttershy compete to such a degree. Might we have you to thank for her boost in confidence, Peter?” Rarity inquired, catching him off guard while his attention was elsewhere. “It must have come from somewhere I guess. I can't take any credit.” Even if he said otherwise, Peter himself had started to wonder if he was telling the truth. His thoughts were caught off by the happy jumps of Applebloom, looking for his attention. “We won, Peter!” The young girl held up her hand looking for a high five, which Peter returned crisply. “We did, thanks to you. Good job Applebloom.” Before he could get another word in, the girl had already zoomed off towards the others, possibly to find her friends. Peter had forgotten just how hyperactive and easily distracted kids could be, even though he was one not too long ago. Though at nineteen years old, his childhood felt so long ago. Especially when he factored in a few years of being Spider-Man. He began to wonder if he gave up a normal life too soon to pursue being a hero, but the sight of his friends safe and sound with their loved ones reminded him that it would always be worth it. He did notice that one person seemed to not be around to give Fluttershy her kudos - Zephyr. A quick look around brought Peter’s attention to the road leading into town, where Zephyr was spotted heading towards, seemingly unbeknownst to anyone else. While everyone else was busy playing in the snow now that the games were over, Peter decided it was time to have a word with Fluttershy's little brother. He thought back on the past few days. “Ever since he got here with his folks, all he's done is find some way to mock Fluttershy underhandedly. The fact she puts up with it is practically saintly. Unfortunately for him, I’m anything but saintly.” Once out of sight, Peter made use of his speed to all but disappear from view. The ones able to perceive him were already aware of his secret, and his senses would keep him alert just in case. The only one who noticed was Twilight, having already spotted Zephyr's absence and had now seen Peter in pursuit. Peter had expected Zephyr to walk through Ponyville, but he instead began to wander off the main path into town, instead heading out past the town limit. Ironically rough, he was walking the same direction Peter had first ventured into town many months ago, half dead and beaten up. While tailing Zephyr across the bridge, Peter lamented silently on the time he had spent here. How not long ago the river that ran past the town was pretty much a barrier to his prison. Had it really been three months already? Eventually Zephyr stopped in the middle of an open field, just staring at the sky. Peter observed from afar, wondering if Zephyr just came out all this way to watch the world go by. It was only when he opened his mouth that any peaceful ideas went out the window. “Oh wow Fluttershy. So incredible, so brave. So much the favourite child. Could she be anymore of a perfect pain in my ass? Just for ONCE could she mess up?!” “Guess your attitude really does stink, huh?” Peter, upon hearing Zephyrs' less than loving tone about his own sister, decided to make himself known, catching the pegasus off guard. “You following me? Look buddy, I know I’m amazing, but you're not my type. Perhaps you ask my darling sister. She's obsessed with you enough as it is.” Peter wasn't particularly amused with Zephyr's attitude since he met him. He wasn't sure what it was, but something about it just boiled his blood. Not enough to go Berserker, but just enough to make him annoyed. “Cut the crap. Ever since you got here you’ve been nothing but dismissive of everything Fluttershy has done. Hell, she was amazing when we had our snowball fight, and you couldn't even say as such. What is with you?!” “Oh sure, I’ll do just that. Heap on more approval than what she already gets. Perfect Fluttershy, can do no wrong! Perfect Fluttershy, looks after all the animals! Perfect Fluttershy, gets to be a hero of Equestria! Just Perfect Fluttershy! All. The. Time! I'm sick of it! Sick of having to live up to a standard I’ll never live up to! Do you have ANY idea what that's like?!” An emotional dam had finally burst within Zephyr, his legs giving out from underneath him, tears flowing from his eyes. Peter, who was ready to dish out the same putrid attitude he had received from Zephyr, began to rethink his strategy. Any anger that he was feeling faded away, replaced with pity and understanding. “Actually yeah, I do. I had this friend back home. He was the most helpful guy around, and the best at everything. Everyone loved him for it. And I got jealous. So jealous, and I didnt even see that I was. I started lashing out, hurting people I claimed I loved. I tried to hurt him too. Then we lost him. And I never even got to say I was truly sorry.” Zephyr had been hanging onto Peters every word, staring bewildered through teary eyes. “I do love my family. Truly, I do. It's just… I can tell Mom and Dad are disappointed. And by Celestia I have tried to find a job I’m good at. Something I’m passionate about. But nothing sticks! What am I doing wrong?!” Reaching out, Peter pulled Zephyr to his feet, chuckling at the irony of the situation. “Want my advice? Do something you don't want to do. When I left school I got a job as a photographer. I hated it. The pay was barely enough for bills, my boss was a loud mouthed nutcase. But it kept me going. And I got to learn a few lessons about what having a job is like. Now I do farm work. I don't hate it, but it's not what I wanna do. And sometimes that's just how it is. We all have dream jobs, but sometimes we have to earn them. Trust me, you’ll have plenty of time to figure things out.” One thing Peter had failed to really take notice of this whole time was just how young Zephyr appeared. His attitude the past few days gave an air of arrogance beyonds his years. Something else that he was familiar with. Zephyr himself had slowly but surely wiped away the tears from his eyes, his visage a lot different now that he had been allowed to vent. “So what was taking pictures like? It must have at least been a little fun?” The question had Peter scraping around for an answer. It had been a long time ago. NEW YORK. FOUR YEARS AGO. “Crap. Crap. Crap. Mega crap.” It was a common fact that J Jonah Jameson had a habit for being blunt. And quite intimidating. A mixture that didn't sit well with Peter, whose only goal was to make some money from the Daily Bugle's call for Spider-Man pictures, which had promised a decent payment for any good shots. It had been almost too easy for Peter to set up a scenario to take advantage of the offer. If only he had foreseen just how difficult it was about to become. “I’ll give you 300 bucks for the lot! But I gotta be honest kid, these are pretty amateurish. Not sure how you got these, but next time bring a better camera! Luckily for you, you're the only one to bring in half decent shots NOT on a smartphone!” There weren't exactly many options in that department. The only REAL camera Peter could get his hands on at such short notice was one his Uncle Ben had used years ago. He was lucky there was even some film in it to begin with. “I’ll keep that in mind. But wasn't there a bigger reward for the pictures? It took a lot of effort to get them.” The Bugles editor-in-chief stared in disbelief at the young man sitting in front of him. “300 is about standard pay for a freelance photographer, to which you currently are. IF you play your cards right, perhaps I’ll offer you a job. IF. Now, take this to the girl at the desk at the front, she’ll make sure you get paid. Away with you, now!” Without another word, Peter left Jonah's office, holding the cheque for his work. All that effort for just 300 dollars. “What a ripoff. I knew I should have gone to the Daily Planet website instead. Then again, they have a good photographer on staff already. They'd probably send him out to get pictures.” The main floor of the Daily Bugle was buzzing with action. The big story on everyone's minds was who was the mysterious Spider-Man now swinging through the Manhattan streets, hence the call for pictures of the webhead. At the desk outside of Jameson’s office was a woman that appeared just a little older than Peter, her short, brown hair curling at the ends. She was actually pretty cute. Not that he had any time for stuff like that. He had Aunt May to look after. “Hi there. Mr Jameson said to give this to you.” He awkwardly handed over the cheque, which she silently took to verify it. “I see someone actually managed to get those Spider-Man pictures Mr. Jameson was after. Very impressive.” Peter couldn't help but blush at the compliment. “Thank you. I'm Peter Parker. Photographer.” He outstretched his hand rather awkwardly, but the receptionist took it in hers, perhaps just to humour him. “Betty Brant. Mr. Jameson's assistant.” In the midst of their conversation, raised voices could be heard. Peter and Betty turned their attention towards the small commotion going on, with Betty looking a little concerned. “Wonder who Robbie’s speaking to?” Peter, curious as to what was going on, wandered over to the sight of the commotion. At his desk, senior editor Robbie Robertson was in mid conversation with a mystery woman, clad in a purple jacket. “Look, I just have to speak with Mr.Jameson about hiring a photographer. I would’ve brought ours with me, but he's helping a fellow reporter on another story. No one special, just someone who can use a camera.” Robbie sighed heavily, having gone around in circles on the topic for a good few minutes. “I know you need a photographer, but all our staff are out on assignments. And do you think that Jonah of all people would give one of our direct competitors the resources to snag a story in New York? I'm sorry, but no can do.” Peter, seeing an opportunity arise, stepped into the middle of the conversation. “I can help. I'm pretty good with a camera, and not on assignment. Well, I don't actually work here, but I can still take some good shots if you need them, ma’am.” “I admire the optimism. Plus the ability to see an open door and walk on through. But I gotta see some proof you're actually a competent photographer.” Without hesitation, Peter dove into his bag and pulled out copies of the pictures he had handed to Jameson moments ago. The mystery women seemed to be trying to dissect them as much as possible, until she gave a reply. “Quality is a little off, but by the looks of your camera I can see why. But there is potential. Alright kid, I’ll give ya a shot. If you can keep up.” An elated Peter struggled to keep in his excitement. Another opportunity to get some work, and money to help with things at home. “I swear, I won't let you down! My name’s Peter by the way. Though, now that I think about it, I didn't catch your name.” “It's Lane. Lois Lane of the Daily Planet.” PRESENT DAY Though they were on their way back to the castle, Peter and Zephyr had chosen to take a longer route so that the two could talk a little more. A conversation that could easily have been nothing but a shouting match had become much more productive than expected. Peter had seen much of himself in Zephyr: a young man with no clue what to do in the world, surrounded by people who were more assured of themselves. At the very least he could make sure that history wouldn’t repeat itself. But Zephyr still had his doubts. “What if I get it wrong again? I’ll just go back to being the same disappointing son all over again.” Come to think of it, Peter never had that issue to face. Aunt May and Uncle Ben very rarely were disappointed in him. Both making up the bedrock of his confidence as a kid and teenager. It was once he stepped into the larger world that things changed. But Zephyr hadn’t made that step yet. “Failure happens. It's how we learn. People think that failure gives us nothing. But it gives us the means to plan success. We learn from our mistakes. We just have to choose to accept that we failed.” “But Fluttershy’s never failed at anything. She's always gotten a handle on things. She really just is perfect.” Zephyr’s words were filled with dejection This was the one part Peter knew he had no advice for. He grew up an only child, never being around siblings. He had no one to compare himself to in terms of a brother or sister. He did however know Fluttershy. “Are you sure about that? I’ve only been here a few months and I can tell you for a fact that she's not flawless and perfect.” Zephyr, who had been able to observe how his older sister and Peter interacted with each other, found that hard to believe coming from him. “With the way you and Fluttershy eyeball each other all the time, something tells me you think differently.” Peter hadn't expected such a retort, struggling to find a way to handwave away any accusations. Though judging by Zephyr's face, that wasn't going to be an easy task. “Ok, aside from the fact that Fluttershy and myself are just good friends, she's not exactly the most confident person I've ever met. Why do you think everyone was so excited to see her do well in that snowball fight? From what the other girls have told me, Fluttershy used to have zero confidence. Not sure which version of her you remember, but it's not the same as now.” Zephyr began to think back. How much time did he actually spend around his sister when they were younger? It all suddenly dawned on him: he didn’t spend much time with her at all. “I… guess I don't know her that well at all. She went off to flight school when I was still young. Then when she came home, she was gone again.” It was all beginning to make sense. Peter had figured that there was something not right about Fluttershy and Zephyr's relationship. And now he had found it. “Well, she’s here now. You just have to talk to her. Find out who she really is.” “Yeah. I think I’ll do that. Thank you, Peter. I'm starting to see why she's so into you.” Once again, Peter was caught off guard, his mind trying to work out what to say in order to dissuade such notions. Unfortunately, Zephyr could see the cogs turning and decided to shut it down. “I'm not exactly the smartest guy around, I can admit that now. But even I can see that she likes you. Alot. And I know you feel the same about her. So maybe I’m not the only one who should be having a chat with her.” When Zephyr began to walk away, Peter was still trying to find something to say, but all that fell out of his mouth were stammers. Eventually he gave up. Sighing as he started to catch up with Zephyr. His thoughts began to turn to Fluttershy. “She is great, I’ll admit that much. But… Do I really wanna settle down here? Bring someone else into this crazy life of mine, after everything that's happened?” Episode 4 - So This Is HearthswarmingEpisode 4 - So This Is Hearth's Warming THE KENT FARM, TWO YEARS AGO May and Martha had been working around the clock almost all day. Preparing a Christmas meal not only for themselves but for Clark, Kara and Peter, was a herculean task in of itself , given that the boys' appetites were borderline insane at times. They even had to make a whole cake just to split between Clark and Peter given their sweet toothes were dialed to eleven. “And to think there was a time I had to be sure Peter wouldn't eat us out of house and home. But with his job paying as well as it does, I suppose a feast here and there won't hurt the bank account, now will it?” May lamented, her mind going back to the early days of herself and Ben raising Peter, and all the hurdles that came with it. She definitely didn't miss some of those days. Martha, having raised a super-powered child of her own, knew the feeling all too well. “I tell ya, May, if I had known for even a second that Clark didn't need to eat all the time, I might have curbed on a meal here and there. But… I suppose it never did any harm. In the end he was always happy and healthy. And that's all we want for our boys, right May?” It had been tough the past two years. May had no one to talk to about Peter's double life except for him, and half the time it stressed her out to no end, even if he did come back every night. But since meeting Martha, she finally had someone she could vent to. Especially the more difficult questions. “Martha, do you ever worry about Clark not coming home? If one day, someone gets the better of him?” The question caught Martha off guard just a little, given it was one she had asked many times, and still did even years after Clark had begun his time as Superman. But she always came to the same answer. “I’ve always worried about Clark. It's the job of a mother to worry. And there are days when I see him on the news fighting one of those villains like Luthor or Metallo, someone who knows how to hurt him. But they try, and my son still wins the day. Peter is the same. They won’t give up until people are safe. And we both know we could never stop our sons from helping others when they need it.” May had seen it many times herself. Nights when Peter came home, his suit half torn and bloodied, even if his wounds had healed ages ago. The next day she’d read of how his deeds had saved dozens of lives or more, and suddenly it all seemed worth it. Then she would remember how he looked the night before. “But I’ve seen Peter bleed, Martha. I’ve seen what happens when he gets in over his head. My boy can be broken, yours can't.” Years of having to help Clark navigate his secret had taught Martha when someone was holding something in. “Clark can be hurt. I’ve seen it happen. And he CAN bleed. If one of those psychopaths uses Kryptonite in the right way, my boy does bleed. More than one tattered suit has found its way into my hands. I understand your fear, May. But at the end of the day, we can't stop our boys from risking their lives for others. They’d never live with themselves if they stopped. I'm sure Peter couldn't.” She was right. May remembered the night Peter had told her about what happened to Ben. His inaction had major consequences. An inaction he vowed never to repeat. “I just… worry Martha, that’s all. Peter is the son Ben and I were unable to have. I don't want to lose him.” It was a situation Martha Kent knew all too well herself, being in the same position. “Jonathan and I had the same concerns. We could never give Clark a sibling, so all we could give him was our love and support. And I know our husbands would be proud of the men our boys became.” While the two were in the middle of their heart-to-heart talk, the shrill ringing of a kitchen alarm went off, prompting Martha to race to the oven. “That’ll be the turkey done. Should be almost time to call the kids in.” The kids in question were all outside in the barn, clearing out any of the winter weather that had gotten inside. Despite being far away from anyone that would recognise them, Clark and Kara kept up their disguises. Though for the former it was pretty much muscle memory at this point. Besides, at the Kent farm he was Clark here too. Kara by this point had mastered her cousin's means of blending in behind a pair of glasses and a change of demeanor. But like him, away from the prying eyes of the world she could be herself. Peter on the other hand could be his usual, dorky self. No disguise required. “God, I can't wait for dinner! The way Aunt May makes roast potatoes is out of this world!” “I’ll believe it.” Clark added. “Combined with Ma’s special recipe Turkey, we’re in for good eating tonight!” The two boys chatted away about food, leaving Kara to her thoughts. She was excited too, just for different reasons. Most of the time, she was with other heroes having to save the day. And while she took pride in it, all she wanted was some time with her family. Today was that one day. “Will Lois be joining us, Kal?” She inquired, aware of the great affection her cousin had for his fellow reporter/sort of girlfriend. “Actually, she is! Not until much later, so she’ll miss dinner. I’m not surprised. Even on Christmas Day, Lois won't stop looking for the next big story.” In the midst of their conversation, Clark and Kara’s heads suddenly perked up, their super senses able to deduce that dinner was almost ready. “Come on you two. Looks like Christmas dinner is served!” Clark exclaimed joyfully, always a big fan of Christmas day, maybe even more so than the two teenagers. Even running ahead of them out of the barn. Kara was still getting used to the idea of the festive season, and many other things on Earth in general. But the concept of a day with just family and loved ones sat well with her. Especially if it meant getting to spend time with Peter, the only other person who had made her feel at home on Earth. Before she left the barn, she found herself just gazing at Peter for a few moments, who thanks to his own senses was made aware that she was looking at him. Even when his eyes met hers, she never looked away, unashamedly in love with him. “I don't have anything on my face, do I?” Peter inquired. “No, you’re fine. I just… Can’t believe how lucky I am. I get to spend today with all my favourite people. You most of all. You’ve made being here so much easier to deal with. I know Kal’s family, and I’m grateful for everything he's done for me. But you’re the one person who understands me the most, who went out of his way the most to make me feel welcome. And I love you for that, Peter.” Every time Kara said those words, Peter had to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Even the snowfall outside made it feel like he was having a moment while he was asleep. It all felt so surreal, making him more grateful when he realised that it wasn't a dream. “I know you didn't come here with much, but I’ll always be there when you need me, Kara. And I’ll always love you.” Their hands met as they walked back towards the house, Clark having gone on ahead to give them a moment. A smile broke out across his face, truly proud of the two young adults. Food was enjoyed, laughter was had. It was a perfect Christmas. APPLE FAMILY FARM, PRESENT DAY A banging noise came from Peter's bedroom door, waking him from what was a pleasant dream. Even if it was more like a memory. “Come on, Pete! Up and at em! We gotta be headin’ over to the castle soon!” Applejack's voice called through, the only one she really raised her voice to Peter, and it was to get him out of bed. Even after months of living on the farm, he still couldn't get up on time without someone telling him to. “Maybe I should just get an alarm clock.” One shower later and Peter was layering up for the journey, the weather still a little on the frigid side. On the shelf behind his clothes, including a few spare Spidey suits, were two boxes. One contained the parts for his web shooters that were donated by the mirror world version of himself, and the other was wrapped up with a nice bow on the top. Though Peter couldn't take credit for the bow. After seeing the abysmal job he had done on the wrapping, Applebloom had swooped in to finish the job, judging him the entire time. Inside was the surprise gift he had gotten for Rainbow Dash, having drawn her name in a raffle so that everyone would receive presents from different people. Fortunately, Dash wasn't shy in talking about her interests, so Peter had done some digging and found her the perfect gift. Thankfully, the weather had calmed down somewhat, with only a light snowfall coming from the sky, making the trip to the castle much easier. A few townsfolk were heading inside, though much less than weeks past. The work on Ponyville was close to completion, with many residents now being able to enjoy the comfort of their own homes for the first time in over a month, and reconstruction was set to be complete by the end of the year. Upon entering the castle, Applebloom made a beeline straight for the other kids, while Granny Smith and Big Mac went off to find a quiet spot of their own for the time being. Entering the map room, Peter and Applejack noticed it was rather crowded. Friends and family all hunkered in making various conversations. And much to Peter's delight, Fluttershy and Zephyr were next to each other and appeared to be having a good time talking. And while he wanted to wish Fluttershy a happy Hearth's Warming, he knew that chance would come up later. Instead, his attention focused elsewhere, spotting the royal sisters talking to Twilight, Spike, Shining and their parents, with Celestia giving Peter a quick wave before her attention returned to the conversation. Flurry Heart was playing with the Cake twins under Cadence and Pinkie’s supervision. Everyone was entangled with each other at this point, leaving Peter unsure of where he could insert himself. Setting his present down with the others, he quietly left the room. “Wonder if they got any hot cocoa lying around?” After weeks of having half of Ponyville contained within the castle, it was strange to now see it so empty. Only a few guards lingered around the halls, their duties mostly tying up loose ends with supplies and paperwork, casting Peter's mind back to the start of the town's reconstruction. “AJ will be happy to see the end of the bureaucracy.” Wandering towards the kitchen, Peter found no one around, at least for now. Fine by him. Which meant he could just help himself to whatever was available. And there were plenty of goodies still left over, including some cocoa powder and cookies. Making some hot cocoa (with a decent amount of sugar), Peter returned to the hallway, happily sipping away and taking a bite out of the cookie he had swiped (chocolate brownie if anyone is curious). “I hope you kept a few of those for everyone, Parker.” His attention brought to the doorway, Peter had a mix of surprise and shock to see Adagio Dazzle entering the castle, followed closely by Sonata and Aria. “Sorry to disappoint you, but this was the last one. If you wanted more, maybe you three should have stuck around after the fight.” He stated, taking another bite as if to purposefully mock Adagio, who rolled her eyes in response. “Well we would have loved to have stuck around, but we needed assurances that the princesses wouldn't have us killed after we helped out. Surely you can understand that?” Peter had wondered why the ladies had dipped out so quickly, but after having lived with the prospect of being enemy number one for a good month, he understood. “Well I have to say, it's good to see you three. And I don't think I ever thanked you properly. Without you three, who knows how many people could have gotten hurt.” It had been a long time since any of the Siren trio had been thanked for any action they had taken that didn’t directly benefit themselves. And in a way, it was more worthwhile. “I want to say we owed you, but that would be a lie. We balanced the scales by warning you of Starlight's little death march.” Normally Adagio spoke with some degree of bravado, but it was clear she was speaking from the heart. “I hate to admit it, but Sonata has a bright idea every few centuries. And she was right. If we didn't stand with you, we’d die eventually anyway. And besides, after Starlight's bluster and Sombra’s threats, it was worth being there just to see you smack them around a little. So I guess… you’re welcome… Peter.” Adagio extended her hand out, shocking her sisters. The elder Siren never saw anyone outside them as worthy of any respect. So clearly Peter had done something right to earn it. With his hand now cookie free, Peter returned the gesture. “Well, seeing as no one else is around, welcome to the castle. I would say the princess is in another one, but all of them are here. Follow me.” With a spring in his step, Peter began to head back towards the map room, with the Sirens following behind with some level of scrutiny, which Peter picked up on. “You three ok?” It was evident that the sisters were now fully aware of what lay ahead of them. Even Adagio's confidence was rocky at best, exemplified by how much she was trying to shield Sonata and Aria. Whatever magic they still possessed, it was far from the power of the Alicorn princesses. “Hey. I know you're all still worried, but nothings gonna happen to you. I’d stake my life on it.” Having been alive for so long, the Sirens knew when someone was lying to them, or just having hollow words. But Peter's words were nothing of the sort. Everything he said was genuine, and they knew it. “Hey everyone! We have guests!” The attention of everyone in the room turned to the doorway, a few gasps coming out at the sight of the Siren trio. There was some hesitation of what to do, that was until Fluttershy broke the silence. “Um… welcome to all of you. It's so nice to have you here for Hearths Warming.” Once again, the Sirens could tell if someone wasn’t being sincere with them, and all they got from Fluttershy was real kindness. Though from what they remembered of the mirror dimension’s Fluttershy, she was always this nice. With the silence broken, Celestia stepped forward, followed closely behind Luna. “Adagio. Sonata. Aria. I have had time to ruminate on the punishment I dealt you three. I am sure Peter has already said this, but without your help, many citizens of this town may have lost their lives. With that in mind, my declaration of banishment is henceforth withdrawn. And, if you would permit, I would like for us to start fresh again.” Adagio's eyes flickered between the two royal sisters, her mind scrambling with thoughts on the situation. Given everything that happened, was she ready to accept such an offer, especially from the ones who were ready to punish her and her sisters? What was the right thing,no, the safe thing to do? Her questions were answered for her as Sonata and Aria took her hands in theirs, assuring her that it was the right path. “I suppose we accept. I’ll admit, it would be nice to not always be on the run, looking over our shoulders. It's been a long time since we’ve felt welcomed anywhere.” The eldest Siren held her hand out once again, with Celestia accepting it with both hands. “You are most welcome here.” With the tension now broken, the others in the room got back to chatting amongst themselves, with Sonata and Aria invited over to join in. It had been a long time since Sirens were a thing in Equestria. As Celestia left, Luna approached Adagio, making her and even Peter a little nervous. But to their surprise, Luna bowed her head to Adagio. “I must apologise, Adagio Dazzle. I of all people should never have judged you, especially when I have been given a second chance to make right to my own mistakes. You and your sisters should be allowed the same opportunity.” A smile broke across Peter's face, delighted to see that Luna had softened a little since her last meeting with the Sirens. Adagio, still recovering from the fact that she and her siblings were now free, could think of no other response than to return the bow. “It's an opportunity we won't waste, Your Highness. I can assure you of that.” As Luna returned to her sister's side, Adagio stood motionless, a tear flowing down her cheek. A concerned Fluttershy approached her. “I know it's a lot to take in, Adagio. But believe me, you're safe now.” Wiping away the tear, Adagios initial thought was to return to her default setting, using her bravado to shield her true emotions. But that wouldn't work here. And after some thought on it, she didn't want it to. “Almost a millenia being on the run, moving from place to place so we wouldn't be found out, or killed… I’d like to think we’re safe here.” Always the empathetic one, Fluttershy couldn't help but bring Adagio in for a hug, the Siren caught off guard by the gesture. While instinct told her to get out of it, she knew that wasn't going to happen with this particular pegasus. “Well aren't you just a ray of sunshine. I was wrong to judge you, Fluttershy.” As the hug broke, Fluttershy grabbed Adagio by the hand, dragging her towards the others, with the Siren unable to find the strength to resist. It felt nice to belong. Finally. *** The day turned into a splendid night, with a hearty dinner having been prepared for the many guests, which went down in no time at all. Now had come the part everyone was waiting for - the gifts! Spike looked at his gift with some level of hesitation, as if he already knew what it was. Twilight did tend to get him the same gift every year, that being a book of some description. Much to his surprise, beneath the wrapping paper was an action figure he had been eying for some time, causing him to leap up with joy into his sister's waiting arms. Under the tree, Rainbow Dash spotted one with her name on it. The wrapping paper had been done atrociously, but the bow looked pristine. She had a better look at the tag to see who it was from. “To Dashie. This should make you look 20% cooler. From Peter.” Dash instantly knew that her parents must have used their pet name for her in front of Peter, realising she would never be spared from it now. Rather than let it annoy her, she decided to see what the gift was. After the easiest unwrapping of her life, she lifted the lid on the box to find an incredible sight. “A vintage Wonderbolt flight jacket!? AND in good condition!?” The overtly fangirl response got a chuckle from Peter. But that was the intention. What he didn’t intend was the bone crushing hug she gave him at warp speed. “Thank you, Peter! Maybe you aren't such a doofus after all.” Thankfully Peter was largely unfettered by the hug, though he could have sworn his back felt a bit better. “Huh. She must have cracked my back unintentionally. Lucky me. It was feeling stiff.” Presents were traded across the room, joyous noises ringing out as someone got a new toy or piece of clothing they really needed. “It would appear that you are without a gift, Mr. Parker. Perhaps we can solve that issue.” Rarity’s voice rang out, a rather sizable box in her own hands. And unlike Peters, the wrapping job had been done much more expertly. And it almost felt wrong to undo such amazing work. It didn't stop Peter from tearing it apart. Inside the box was a jacket also. This one however was fully red, with some subtle blue highlighting. It was clear that this was Rarity's attempt to make something that was emblematic of Spider-Man, but without giving it away. And for the most part, it was rather conspicuous. A quick try on also revealed that it had been made to his size. “The perks of already having your torso measurements. Comes in handy for more than one project, wouldn't you agree, Peter?” A cheeky wink of the eye from the seamstress giving an inkling as to what else she meant. *** The night was beginning to settle down, with many of the older guests deciding to turn in for some much needed rest. Some would be leaving tomorrow, needing to return to jobs or other duties, and could do so in the knowledge that their children were safe. The princesses themselves of course had to take their leave, though Cadence, Shining and Flurry would be leaving in the morning. And though it was well past her bedtime, the infant alicorn refused to go to her bed. Or away from Peter, who had evidently become a favourite of hers. In the end, he had to be the one to try and coax her to sleep. “I’ll be here in the morning to see you off. And we’ll see each other again soon. I promise.” Finally, sleep took Flurry, her baby brain unable to fight it off for much longer, while her hand still attached to Peter's finger until the moment she entered her slumber. “She's taken quite a shine to you. I think we all have.” Said Cadence, she and Shining watching on. “You showed incredible courage to save her from Sombra, and we still don't know how to repay you properly.” It was far from the first time Peter had placed his life in jeopardy for the sake of someone else. And far from the first that he was offered some form of reward. “No need to repay me. I did it because it had to be done.” A firm handshake from Shining and a rather tender kiss on the cheek from Cadence signalled goodnight from them, allowing Peter to return downstairs. Back in the map room, the only ones left were pretty much his immediate friend group, with the kids also having turned in for the night. Adagio, her mug full of something a bit stronger than hot cocoa, raised it into the air. “Well, now that those not in the know are out of the way - here's to the conquering hero!” A small cheer went out around the room, a few hoots and hollers from Pinkie and Sonata. An embarrassed Peter could feel his cheeks blushing. It had been a long time since he had gotten this sort of praise. “I'm pretty sure it was a team effort. I wasn't the only one in the fight. Plus, I wasn't the one who finished it.” While the girls acknowledged that Peter was being humble, some of them wouldn't let it slide. “I mean, yeah we all took part in it. But you were the one that knocked Sombra about. And let's be real - you WON that fight! Not your fault he was a sore loser.” Rainbow Dash screamed out, with the other girls nodding in agreement. Fluttershy handed Peter a cup of cocoa so that he could partake in the celebration. “We'll just have to keep telling you you're amazing until you believe it.” She not so subtly suggested, the other girls seeing her intentions clearer than what Peter did. “Alright, alright. It just… felt good to be a hero again. Being Spider-Man is just what I’m meant to do I suppose. I can only hope I didn't scare anyone.” Peter was clearly elaborating to his Berserker state, which some of the girls had confessed as to being off-putting. Though he wasn't exactly the biggest fan of it either, he now had to see it as another tool in his arsenal. “It is… uncomfortable to see. We see you all the time with such a laid back personality. But we never thought there was all that rage behind you, Peter.” Twilight confessed, a few nods and quiet agreements around the room. The Sirens all shared a look with each other, knowing they had seen the full extent of what Peter truly was capable of. And they would never forget it, even if the past was behind them. “I can only promise I won't use it unless absolutely necessary. But if someone like Sombra comes along again, I gotta know how to use it.” An uncomfortable reality, but one they would have to live with. But even if Peter's power was somewhat terrifying in the girls' minds, there was one thing they had to remember: it would never be aimed at them. “Well!” Rarity shouted out, cutting the tension. “Now that we've gotten the melodramatic part out of the way, let's just enjoy what little of Hearths Warming we have left. Here's to friends, old and new!” Cheers went out, drinks were enjoyed (even if a little too much by those more than old enough to do so) and quiet conversations broke out. It may have been a different place with different people, and with a different name, but there was one thing Peter couldn't deny. It was another perfect Christmas. Author's Note Hello everyone! So here is my very late christmas-themed episode! Hope you all enjoy! Episode 5 - The Party Of PartiesEpisode 5 - The Party Of Parties For the first time in weeks, the snowfall that had almost been continuous had broken. No longer was it frigidly cold outside, as the temperature had become more mild. Though most were still wearing at least a couple of layers during the day as they went about their business. And it was back to business as usual in Ponyville. Almost. Most of the town had now been rebuilt and was open for business. But not everything was the same. Many of the updates to infrastructure were now in place, such as the electric lighting. For many of the longtime residents, it was one change they were still getting used to. Many other buildings had been updated to have some form of electricity, which a lot of people did take advantage of. For Peter, this was a godsend. For months his communicator had been without power, locking away all the information he had stored in it. While not a large device, it was still capable of holding a significant amount of data, personal or otherwise. If Peter could figure out a way to charge it, he would have access to everything stored on it once again. Not that Rarity would give him the time to think about it, since she herself had been too busy finalizing some clothing for him to wear. “Stop dilly dallying, Peter. I have to get your suit ready for the Gala. Which is TOMORROW.” For the past few days, all Peter had been hearing about was exactly that - The Grand Galloping Gala. Yet another event that had yet to be properly explained to him. “So if I'm clear on this, the Gala is a massive celebration to commemorate the end of the year, right? So it's just a big New Years party.” A large gasp escaped from the seamstress. If she was capable of poking Peter with her needles, she would have. Only for her to remember that she lost some already by mistake due to his tough skin. “The Grand Galloping Gala is not JUST a party, Mr. Parker. It is the gathering of many of Equestrias wealthiest, most influential and prominent figures in the land. Although it can be a… mixed bag.” The tone in Rarity's voice gave the impression that something had happened at a previous attendance. “Sounds like something spoiled your night. What happened?” A few moments of silence passed while Rarity struggled to find the right words to say. “One of Princess Celestia's relatives, Prince Blueblood. He had been a crush of mine for years. And when Twilight was able to get us all tickets to the Gala, I thought this was my chance! To meet my dream prince and have him become my lover!” The passion in Rarity's voice fell away just as quickly as she had summoned it. “But… I soon found out that he was anything but a gentleman. He was rude, careless, and self absorbed. Not the kind of man one looks for. It was a tough night for all of us. We each had a vision of how things would play out, and we all left disappointed. Except for the donut shop that saved the night.” Even with the sadness in her voice, it was clear to tell that Rarity had much love for her friends. Peter had seen firsthand just how close they all were, how ready they were to put their lives on the line for each other when Starlight came after Twilight. “You on the other hand, Peter, are very much a real gentleman. In a very forward thinking way.” “I HOPE that was a compliment.” Peter wondered to himself. In the corner of his sight from the mirror, he made out several dress bags, all with symbols attached to them. Peter recognised them as the symbols the girls tended to have on their clothing, leading him to believe that their Gala gowns must have been inside the bags. Rarity noticed Peter's gaze, using her hands to square his head back into position. “Now, now, Mr. Parker. It's far too early for that. You shall see us ladies in all of our finery tomorrow night. If I had more time I would have offered to make the Sirens something. But from what I’ve been told, they have their own plans in that regard.” It was definitely going to be interesting to see the Sirens show up. Not because anyone would recognise them, but because they would for sure turn heads. A few moments later and the last of Rarity's work was done. “And there we have it! Now let’s have a good look at you!” From what Peter could feel, the suit was possibly the best he had ever worn. It wasn’t super baggy, but it didn’t constrict his movement. The waistcoat was a nice touch too. “Can't say I’ve ever looked this fancy. Nice work, Rares.” Peter was ready to take the suit jacket off in the same manner he did with most of his coats, but a stern glare from Rarity made him rethink that entire plan. Instead, he very carefully removed it and handed it over, almost like he was a surgeon handing over a vital organ. Though if he wasn't careful, he might lose a few of his own. While Rarity searched for another dress bag, Peter swiftly changed into his regular attire, new jacket included. He had been practically attached to it since he received it, a fact Rarity very much revelled in. “Now then, by tomorrow I should have your suit cleaned and packed. Once we all meet here, you WILL be responsible for it. Is that clear? “Yes ma’am! Absolutely.” It may have felt like he was being singled out, but something told Peter that the girls had all been given the same ultimatum regarding their Gala attire. Between his Spidey suits and his new jacket, Peter knew just how much Rarity took pride in her work, and the quality of it. Fortunately, like the girls, this wouldn't be the first time he had been around those in high society. Though this would count among the times he was a guest. Other times, he had a job to do. NEW YORK CITY, FOUR YEARS AGO “Good thing I had this dress suit lying around. Jonah would have killed me if I missed out on this bash!” There weren't many New Year's parties this extravagant. And nobody did extravagance more like Tony Stark. The genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist had turned the upper floors of Stark Tower into a Smorgasbord of who's who. Not just from New York, but from around the world. Not too far from where Peter stood, the king of Wakanda, T’Challa, was in mid-conversation with Oliver Queen, the owner of Queen Industries from Star City. Billionaire tech moguls and politicians chatted over glasses of overpriced champagne. All Peter had to do was take some good shots (with his now upgraded camera) and dip. Nothing too difficult. That was until a familiar face recognised him across the room - the recent addition to Midtown High's Sophomore Year, and new friend to Peter, Harry Osborn. “Hey Peter! Surprised to see you here. You on assignment with the Bugle?” Harry noted, his eyes glancing down at Peter's press pass, which was the only reason he even got remotely close to the party at all. “Yep. Jolly Jonah has me on this rather than anything Spider-Man related. Says he wants one of his more “professional” photographers to snap photos of the webhead.” Not that they would have any luck like he did. With his new camera, Peter had been perfecting the fine art of taking photos of himself while as Spider-Man. Though that may have involved wrecking it more than once. “Yet all you're doing is acting like a fly on the wall. Come on man, you gotta REALLY get up close and personal. Follow me!” Harry decreed, dragging Peter by the arm. The pair were headed towards one of the private booths, reserved for when the rich and powerful wanted a break. This one must have been for Harry. “Peter, allow me to introduce you to my dad - Norman Osborn!” Sitting in the booth was indeed Norman Osborn. Founder of Oscorp Industries, one of New York's biggest tech and science firms. And someone Peter very much admired, himself being almost lost for words at the sight. “Um, Mr. Osborn. It's an honour, sir.” Standing up, Norman did look somewhat imposing. Then again, he needed to be that way. But his demeanor changed on a dime, going from serious to gentle before anything was said. “Come now, Peter. No need to be nervous. It's nice to finally meet you. And please, call me Norman.” He extended a hand, which Peter took with great gusto. “I’m sorry, si- Norman. It's not exactly a normal night for me. A little overwhelming.” With a gesture, Norman welcomed Peter into the booth, Harry following behind. As they sat down, a waitress appeared almost out of thin air with drinks. Of course, the boys had something non-alcoholic. “Harry’s told me a lot about you, Peter.” Norman stated in between sips of what was likely a very expensive whisky. “That apparently you're quite the science wizz. You know, I'm something of a scientist myself.” He said with a rather dignified yet smug look. Peter's head was somewhere in the clouds right now. “Oh I know, sir. I follow your work here and there. I’m actually hoping to get an internship at Oscorp in the summer.” Norman raised an eyebrow, curious about what Peter could offer. “Well instead of later, why not now? After all, I do own the company. Give me five minutes and I’ll have you set up.” Peters' eyes snapped open at the offer, knowing that such an early start would help with bills along the way. Bills he had to help pay. “I’m sorry, Norman. I um… I wanna make my own way there.” Even if a little disappointed, Norman was deeply impressed. “That took courage to say no. To chart your own course. Very well then, but I best see your name come up in the summer, you hear me?” “Of course! Hey, tiny favour. Would you mind if I took a quick shot of you and Harry? Jonah would kill me if I passed up the chance.” The two Osborn men had a small chuckle to themselves. “Of course, Pete. Come on dad, let's look good for the cameras.” Harry stood by his fathers side, the two looking incredibly identical. Peter took his opportunity to snap as many pictures as possible. A raised hand from Norman stopped him. “One second, Peter. Let's give Jameson what he wants. Hey Lex! How about some decent PR for a change!” EQUESTRIA, NOW One day and a train ride later, everyone was now in attendance for the Grand Galloping Gala. The girls had been sequestered to a private suite to get ready, while Spike ran some last minute errands. This left Peter with some time to himself, as he figured it wouldn't take as long for him to get ready. With the night drawing in, most of Canterlot was empty, either to call it a day or get ready for tonight's party themselves. In the midst of his wandering, Peter had found himself in the same spot he had once contemplated his future in Equestria. While still not completely sure, he at least knew that being a hero was still part of his future. And perhaps that was enough. “I would ask what you are thinking about. But I suppose I can make some assumptions.” And just like last time, Luna was right there as Peter turned to face her, knowing her voice a lot more now. “It’s hard to think I was such a different person all those months ago. Yet here I am, a new man. Almost.” “It would seem that much has changed for us both. Last time we spoke in this city, I made an unfair request of you. And yet, with some time, you granted that request in a way. I am grateful to you, Peter. Whatever the next year brings, I foresee we shall both face it together along with our friends.” Peter had seen the Princess of the Moon change much in the months he had lived here, and much of it for the better. True, both of them had butted heads on more than one occasion, but they had managed to resolve things by the end. If anything, Luna might have been the reason Peter wasn't killed by Sombra. Though the young man however, still saw that as his own failure. But tonight wasn't the time for any negatives; it was about new beginnings. “First we gotta get through this swanky party I've heard so much about.” Luna's eyes rolled back, a reaction Peter had never expected from her. “Ah yes. The Gala. An event that allows the finely dressed peacocks of the kingdom to gather around and try to make nice enough with my sister and I’ so that we may marry them.” Now the events of the night were about to get a lot more interesting, Peter thought to himself. “Wait a second. You two get marriage proposals? I mean… Brave of them to try.” Alluding to the idea that anyone who tried to wed the royal sisters would have to keep up with them to some degree. “You would be surprised Peter. Ever since my return, suitors have lined up without fail. But all they really wish for is some place higher above their current station. It has nothing to do with love or affection. And besides… None of them can fight worth a damn.” Having seen what her older sister is capable of, Peter began to envision what would happen if some spoiled brat tried to take on Luna in single combat. The end result brought out fits of laughter, with Luna sharing in them, having some idea of what Peter was laughing at. “I see you understand my plight!” Their laughter echoed out across the empty streets. “No kidding!” Peter screamed out hysterically. “I'm sorta hoping that happens tonight. It would be hilarious!” For as much as Luna hated the idea of someone proposing to her tonight, the stipulation of her usual one vs one rules would at least garner some form of entertainment. “Perhaps it shall! But all I ask for tonight is that you have fun. Spend time with your friends. Think of who you intend to be this coming year. And most importantly - think of what you want from your time here, be it long or short.” Luna remarked as she took to the skies and back to the castle, leaving Peter to his thoughts. “What do I want from my time here? Well right now I just wanna hang out and have a good time. I wonder what the girls' dresses look like? Especially Fluttershy’s. I’ll bet she's gonna look…” Peter caught himself mid thought, like he had committed a crime. His anger began to brew at no one but himself. Almost as if he deserved it. But did he? Did he deserve to keep hating himself for something he couldn't change? With a few deep breaths, his anger faded. Looking up, his eyes fell upon the castle where the Gala would be held. And after a few more deep breaths, he allowed his thought to be complete. “Beautiful.” A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER The throne room was a sight that Peter had seen one too many times under less than cheerful circumstances, a sigh of relief escaping him as he realized that he was here as a guest, not as a prisoner. Many of the guests had already arrived, alongside the orchestra which was currently setting up. A few soft notes rang out as the musicians played around with their instruments to get them in tune. While they set up, the room began to fill even more, but still no sign of the girls. Just before the doors closed, a frantic Spike just made it inside, making a beeline for Peter. “Spike? Where is everyone? They got an attendance cap on this thing?” The young drake was still trying to catch his breath, obviously having to run for his life to make it in time. “Oh yeah… the girls… are gonna… be here shortly.” He said, taking heavy breaths in between words. “But… they're entering with the Princesses. Guest of Honour type thing, ya know. Especially after what happened in Ponyville.” “Figures.” It made sense of course; all six girls were heroes known throughout Equestria. Plus, much of Equestria was still unaware that Spider-Man even existed. There were rumours for sure, but nothing concrete. So for now at least, Peter felt it was best to just watch from the background. The murmuring crowd was hushed as the doors opened again, a parade of guards marching through as trumpets blared. Behind them were Celestia and Luna, looking incredibly beautiful and majestic. Like a pair of Greek Goddesses brought to life. Many men in the crowd seemed to think so. Next to enter were Cadence, Shining Armour and Flurry Heart, looking adorable all dressed. The ever observant infant spotted Peter in the crowd, but knew she had to stick with her parents for now. Twilight stepped through next, her dress mimicking the lavender tones she was known for. She looked amazing. Finally, the other girls came through one by one. Dash's look was sleek, a hint of rainbow here and there. Rarity of course had maybe gone a little over the top with hers, but it got much attention. Applejack was the opposite, more simple in places but it was very her. Pinkie's dress had a lot of pizzazz to it. And lastly, who Peter had wanted to see the most, was Fluttershy. What he saw was indescribable. Her dress was mostly green with some yellow highlights. But what stood out was how daring it was. A slit further down allowed her legs to be shown off a fair amount. Something Peter would never have thought she would go for. For a moment, their eyes met, her stare beaming back at his with some embarrassment but also joy, leaving Peter stunned. A claw poking into his ribs got his attention, a rather smug looking Spike looking up at him. “You wanna put your jaw back in place, Peter?” True enough, Peter's mouth had been agape for a few moments once he saw Fluttershy. “PLEASE tell me no one saw me like that? Well, Fluttershy did… Dammit.” At the front of the proceedings, the guards parted, allowing Celestia and Luna to walk the steps to their thrones. Cadence and Shining took their places further down, while the girls stood at the base of the steps. The crowd fell silent, waiting to hear from their beloved princesses. “Citizens of Equestria!” Celestia announced. “Welcome back once again for the Grand Galloping Gala!” The crowd broke into applause and cheers, but a raised hand from Celestia silenced them back down. It was clear she had much to say. “This year has been quite a journey for most of us. And I know that many of you have questions in regards to what happened in Ponyville weeks ago. I can confirm that a renegade Unicorn Clanswoman, through use of magic long since forbidden, had summoned dark forces to aid her in causing death and destruction. But as always, the bearers of the Elements of Harmony rallied behind each other to take on the evil that had terrorized us. Myself and Princess Luna, as well as Princess Cadence and Prince Shining Armour, assisted in their fight. No one was harmed, but the town of Ponyville was destroyed.” Discussion broke out throughout the hall. So the rumors were true. But if they were correct, then what else had happened? “Princess Celestia!” One guest shouted out. “What about the rumours of a so-called masked hero?” And there it was: the very question they had all been dreading. Celestia scanned the crowd, their eyes all fixed on her, waiting for an answer. She had a story ready to tell: to keep Spider-Man in the shadows for just a little bit longer. But then her gaze fell on Peter, standing all the way at the back of the crowd. He seemed content, given that none of his own deeds were being spoken of tonight. And yes, she had fought, as had her sister; they all fought. “But he was the only one who bled. After everything we put him through… He bled for us.” Whatever story Celestia had ready to deliver was immediately wiped from her mind. It wasn't the one she wanted to tell. “Indeed. There was another who stood among us. A hero who called himself Spider-Man.” The hushed crowd now became a lot louder as thoughts on this new hero sparked from person - to- person. The girls became nervous, knowing that the very topic of discussion was in the room. Before the rabble became too hectic, Celestia raised her hand yet again to silence the crowd. “There are only so many questions about him I can answer. He is a mystery to us all right now; his face and name are being kept secret. What is known however, is that he is an individual of great courage. And believe me, you would need much of it to face what we did that day. And Spider-Man faced it alongside us. Even almost paying with his own life to safeguard so many others.” The last few murmurs began to quiet down as Celestia told her story. And Peter could see what she was doing. If he couldn't stand among them, then she would find a way to honour his actions. “While we do not know his true name, we do know that he stands for justice, and seeks to protect those who cannot protect themselves.” Luna spoke, taking her turn to say a few words. “It is because of Spider-Man that my daughter is even alive. We owe him so much.” Announced Cadence, Flurry Heart cradled tightly into her side. Celestia took over the speech again with a few last words. “There were many heroes that day. One may have chosen not to join us tonight. But I hope that wherever he may be - He knows just how much in debt we all are to him. Because of him, many of us are here to enjoy this celebration tonight. So please, everyone, enjoy yourselves! For a brand new beginning awaits us all!” A roaring round of applause broke out again, this time much louder. Celestia's eyes once again found Peter, nodding a sign of approval which he returned. As the crowd dispersed, Peter made his way up to the front to join the others, Upon spotting him, the girls rushed forward, a group hug forming. “You all looked amazing up there! And your dresses, wow!” Peter cried out, still hopped up on good vibes from Celestia's speech. “Oh we know!” Decreed Rarity. “These gorgeous gals and my sense of fashion? Works of art, dear. And YOU Mr. Parker, well aren't you rather dashing? It seems you look good in just about any suit.” Now that she had mentioned it, the girls all got a good look at Peter in his own formal wear. And they had to admit, he cleaned up rather nicely. “Shame the stylist couldn't do much about your hair, Peter. You look like you just got out of bed.” Twilight pointed out, trying her best to try and slick back Peter's hair with her magic, only for it to pop back out into place. “I think it suits him, honestly. It makes him look like a handsome spy!” Was what popped out of Fluttershy's mouth, prompting everyone to do a double take at her. The Pegasi, aware of her own words, turned dark red on her cheeks. “Dang Flutters. Between that and the dress choice, it feels like a whole new you!” Commented Dash. Even many of the more upper crust guests had taken notice of just how captivating Fluttershy looked tonight. Though the more they looked, the more self-conscious she began to feel. “I know I look a little… ridiculous.” “No way, you look beautiful!” The words that had been thought of for so long finally found their way out of Peter's mouth. And in the most crowded space of all to do it in. The girls were stunned to silence, Rarity's face contorting into the biggest smile. A part of Peter wanted to take back what he said, or play dumb on it. But then he remembered what he thought to himself earlier. He was done denying himself a future. “I mean it. You look incredible.” It wasn't said with ill intent, or try and pretend to make anyone feel good. It was words Peter meant every part of. Almost as if to help set the mood, the orchestra began to play, with many of the guests pairing up to dance. It was an opportunity too good to pass up. “What do you say, Flutters? Shall we dance?” In the past, Fluttershy had been slow to make decisions, even outright passing up on activities with friends as she was too scared to say or do anything. “I would love to!” Today was certainly not one of those days. Peter extended his hand out, Fluttershy grabbing it tightly. Their friends watched on in glee as the two made their way to the dancefloor. Back over at the thrones, Cadence spotted the two, pointing the sight out to Celestia and Luna, their own faces glowing with smiles. “It would appear that Peter has chosen to move forward with his life here. How wonderful to see!” Celestia exclaimed. “Perhaps your speech was enough to give him that last piece of courage, Tia?” Luna wondered out loud. Whatever the reason, the royal sisters looked on with pride as their newest friend began to dance, a rather joyful Flurry Heart letting out a cheer. Fortunately for Peter, he had been to many formal events, so this was easy. Fluttershy on the other hand struggled to find her footing. “I’ve never really danced before. I was always too scared to try.” The two merely circled in place, Fluttershy becoming a little too self-aware of what she was doing. Trying to calm her, Peter pulled her in close. “Hey. It's just you and me here. Just us, ok?” While their proximity made Fluttershy's cheeks blush like they were on fire, it also made her less aware of the crowd around them. The world became a little bit smaller until it really did feel like it was just the two of them. Even the music started to drown out for her as she rested her head on Peter's chest, the slow and steady drum of his heartbeat the only thing she could hear. For the moment, Peter led the dance on, allowing Fluttershy to find her comfort zone. His arms found their way to her back, holding her close. Holding her safely. His eyes never left her, always making sure she was ok. Then she looked up at him, their faces so close. In the heat of the moment, they only got closer until finally their lips met. The kiss was soft and subtle, appropriate for where they were. Even when it broke, the two couldn't take their eyes off each other. “First kiss of many, I hope?” Peter said slyly.” “Actually, that was my first kiss in general. It was wonderful. So yes, I’d like some more.” Fluutershy replied with some level of smugness, mixed in with the fact that she had just had her first kiss, dopamine coursing through her. Back at their booth, the rest of the girls watched on in awe as two of their friends had confessed their feelings for each other. In the midst of the spectacle however, some rumblings could be heard from across the room. The girls, too fixated on what was going on, failed to spot the Sirens finally making their appearance at the Gala. And while Aria and Sonata were more reserved in their choice of clothing, Adagio had gone a little more daring, showing off as much as could be considered appropriate for such a gathering. “I see the high society bunch hasn't changed much here. Almost reminds me of when we spent a couple of decades in France.” “Good thing we left. They had that whole Revolution thing and started killing all the high society types. They would have found us out REAL fast.” Sonata pointed out in her usual to the point tone. The sisters spotted the girls and went to join them, though they were confused as to why their presence seemed to have gone unnoticed. “And here I thought you were all excited to see how we would look! What's gotten all of you so worked up?” As if on command, the girls and Spike all pointed out to the dancefloor, right where Peter and Fluttershy were dancing away, every so often landing soft kisses on each other. “Well now! That IS actually more important than anything else tonight. I see the shy one has come out of her shell. Bravo!” Adagio exclaimed with some level of sarcasm. Beneath it all, she was actually a little proud that Fluttershy had actually taken this big step in her life. “I just cannot believe it!” Burst out Rarity. “I’ve been telling you all for WEEKS! And look at how adorable they are together!” The music began to slow down, signalling the end of the song. Having had their moment, Peter and Fluttershy began to make their way back to their friends, the two being surrounded in a group hug as soon as they made their way off the dance floor. “Well, when Rarity's right, she's right.” Said Twilight, prompting a smug smile from the fashionista. “Took your sweet time about, both of ya!” Commented Dash, earning an elbow in the ribs from Applejack. It was only after the high calmed down that everyone started to acknowledge that the Sirens had arrived. And what they were wearing. “My, my Adagio. You certainly know how to grasp an audience.” Rarity pointed out, made more poignant by the many men looking in the eldest Siren’s direction. “I tend to live by the philosophy that if you've got it, flaunt it. Much like Fluttershy over here!” The past few moments had made Fluttershy almost forget that her dress was a little revealing, her cheeks turning red again. She leaned into Peter, his heartbeat once again being a comforting sound. Adagio, letting her guard down for a bit, changed her tone. “But I must say that you two genuinely look adorable together. But Peter, next time please do something about your hair. This is a FORMAL event.” A few laughs broke out as Peter demonstrated that his hair was not so easily manageable, which turned into some conversation about everyone's dresses. It was then that a familiar tingling sensation worked its way up Peter's neck and into his head. “Of all the nights! Ok Spider-Sense, what have you got for me?” Across the way, Celestia and Luna also perked up, their own magical senses going crazy. “It couldn't be, could it?” Celestia pondered. Peter, now partially a slave to his senses, walked away from the group towards the main door, Fluttershy following close behind. “Peter? Is everything ok?” Instinctively, Peter kept her behind him on the off chance something dangerous was coming. But something was… off. “I don't know. Doesn't feel like the other times. I can sense something coming but… I can't tell if it's dangerous or not.” While Peter's own senses couldn't deduce the incoming threat, the royal sisters had more of an idea. “You did not invite him, did you sister?” Luna said accusingly. “I… Might have. I just never thought he would come. Or if he even got the invitation. He's difficult to find when he wants to be.” The doors to the throne room burst open, catching the other guests by surprise. Peters Spider-Sense felt like it had dialed up a few levels, now putting him into almost fighting mode. A pair of hands wrapping around him brought him quickly out of that mindset. “He won't hurt anyone. Please don't fight.” Flutterhsy pleaded. “He's a friend. Just… more unusual than the girls.” The guards at the door drew their weapons, only to find them turned into animal balloons. A nervous Fluttershy held Peter's hand. “I guess it was only a matter of time before you met Discord.” “Salutations everyone! Now the party can REALLY begin.” Author's Note ANOTHER upload this month? Why yes indeed. And what an episode its been. Stayed tune for the follow up! Episode 6 - Agent of ChaosEpisode 6 - Agent of Chaos “The guest of honour has arrived! Hold your applause, everyone. No need to get all excited.” If anything, everyone in the room was still in shock from Discord's arrival. Even now, being in sight, Peter's Spider-Sense still barraged his head nauseatingly, still trying to distinguish if this new guest was friend or foe. Or somewhere in the middle. Getting a proper look at him, Peter realised that Discord wasn't like anyone else he'd met thus far. His right hand, sporting a fanciful cane, looked more like a feline paw, while his left hand matched closer to a claw seen on a bird. Even the horns on top of his head didn’t match up either. His skin wasn't exactly normal either, it being a dark grey rather than any human-like pigment. From what Peter could gather, he was a composite of various creatures from the looks of him. Like a chimera. “So, who exactly is this guy?” Peter inquired with Fluttershy, her hands still locked onto his to insure he didn't make any hasty moves. “Well… he’s a friend. He used to be bad, but he's ok now.” Peter cocked an eyebrow at the phrasing she used. “What do you mean by ‘bad’ here?” He inquired. He could see the look in Fluttershy's eyes as her thoughts whizzed all over the place. “I’ll… I’ll explain later.” As Discord made his way into the room, the crowd around him parted, knowing full well who it was that was now present with them. Though Peter and Fluttershy made no attempt to move out of his way. Upon seeing the pink haired Pegasus, Discord's eyes went wide with excitement. “My dearest Fluttershy! My goodness, don't you look beautiful tonight! You're practically glowing. What has gotten you so…” From the corner of his eye, Discord spotted Fluttershy's hands still tightly closed on Peters, the gears beginning to turn in his head. “I see. Well now, I must get more acquainted with this new friend of yours, Fluttershy. And rest assured, we WILL get acquainted.” The sinister tone in Discord's voice didn't go unnoticed, his slim yet intimidating figure hovering over Peter. Yet the young man didn't bat an eye, which caught Discord off guard. “Either you have NO idea who I am, or you are just plain foolish. We’ll find out which one soon enough!” Before he could make his way through any further, the crowd parted to reveal Celestia and Luna. The sight of the princesses caused Discord to land, doing a rather half assed bow as his feet touched the floor. “Ah, Celestia! Don't you look elegant this fine evening? How fortunate I arrived on time. It would be a shame if you had no dance partner for the party.” Peter's Spider-Sense began to flare up again as the two locked eyes with each other, Celestia’s expression turning the most serious he had seen outside of a fight. The sun princess held her composure however, even if it was clear this guy was getting under her skin. “Good evening, Discord. How kind of you to join us. Though I must admit, even I was unsure if your invitation would find its way to you. Perhaps, an RSVP next time so that we may EXPECT your arrival?” A hearty laugh erupted through the throne room as Discord got to his feet. “Oh come now, Celestia! You expect ME to be one for formalities? Isn't it more fun for me to arrive unannounced? Surely it must have been a surprise for you to have sensed me coming, unaware of my arrival? The suspense in the air - all too thrilling!” During the back and forth between Celestia and Discord, the other girls had joined Peter and Fluttershy, Applejack placing a hand on Peter's shoulder to keep him in check. Which at this point, he knew he needed. “Not that ah don't trust ya Pete, but Discord can be a nasty piece of work when he wants to be. Not on Sombra’s level, but still bad.”Every so often, Discord's eyes would glance over in Peter's direction, his intrigue amplified now that the girls had surrounded him, almost as if they were trying to protect him. But with each glance, Peter could feel his Spider-Sense surging, trying his damndest to not let his instincts take over, and to avoid harming Fluttershy, whose hands were still hanging onto his. Celestia, taking notice of whatever Discord was trying to do, and of Peter's growing discomfort, knew she had to do something to take his attention away. “Oh Discord… How about a dance?” A chorus of gasps echoed throughout the room, with even Discord himself looking shocked. “How could I ever say no to such a request? Oh orchestra, if you please?” The orchestra, themselves stunned, broke out of their trance and began to play. Discord approached Celestia, hand outstretched as she reluctantly took it, and their dance began immediately. Even with no moment to prepare, Celestia kept up with every move. Almost like this wasn't the first time she had done this dance. With Discord's attention off him, Peter slowly made his way to the back of the crowd, well out of sight, Fluttershy with him the entire time. The other girls, except for Twilight, followed. Outside on the large balcony space, Peter took a few moments to catch his breath. “Ok, question time. Who the hell is that guy?!” The girls all looked at each other, wondering how best to describe who Discord even was. “He is a force of nature, Peter.” The voice of Princess Luna boomed out as she joined them. “Discord is the spirit and embodiment of chaos. His magic is the very energy of chaos itself. With it, he can reshape reality at his whim. My sister and I faced him eons ago, and had to imprison him in stone for his actions.” “So that's what Fluttershy meant by him being a bad guy in the past tense. But why is everyone ok with him being around now?” All eyes fell upon Fluttershy. “Princess Celestia tasked me with becoming his friend. And so I did. He's become nicer now because of me, I guess.” Of all the things Peter had seen throughout his life, and in Equestria especially, somehow that was the most impressive thing he had heard about. “Do you usually make it a habit of taming bad boys?” A tender kiss on his cheek was all he needed to know. “Just the ones I like. Though I can understand why everyone is a little hesitant to be around Discord right now.” The expressions of the girls, and Luna, all turned furious. “Because he sold us out to Tirek months ago!” Dash shouted out. “It's hard to tell if he's actually on our side when he pulls a stunt like that!” The mention of Tirek’s name took Peter's mind back to the fight weeks ago when he was trying to deal with the Titan-sized centaur. “So the guy that Celestia is dancing with, betrayed you guys to Tirek?” “Only for Tirek to betray him in the end.” Rarity added. “We all had our moment to laugh at the irony. But rest assured, Discord can be very unpredictable. It’s no wonder Twilight stayed behind to keep an eye on things.” A quick explanation as to why Twilight wasn't with them, the ever faithful pupil making sure her teacher, and friend, was safe. Though Luna’s description of Discord got Peter thinking. “So he's a reality warper? No wonder my Spider-Sense went crazy when he showed up. Those sorts of guys are always a pain.” Even after months, Luna was still surprised by some of the things Peter said. “You mean to tell me you have met beings like him before?” Even the girls couldn't help but feel a little shocked. One being like Discord was bad enough, nevermind more. “Oh yeah, quite a few. A friend of mine had one come after him personally. But he dealt with it.” In amongst their discussions, the group could hear the music begin to die down, meaning that the dance was also close to its end. They headed back through, the crowd breaking into an applause as the dancers parted. Discord took a bow before the audience, and an extra one for Celestia. “Quite the show we gave. But I can tell you haven't moved like that in a while, have you? One wrong step and you’d have looked like quite the fool, my dear.” While she may have had to fix a few things on her dress, Celestia never once gave the impression that she had done anything imperfect. “I’m sure everyone would understand. My duties leave little time for dance practice. And I think the last thing my people would critique me on is my foxtrot.” Celestia retorted with much conviction. From the corner of her eye, she spotted Peter with his friends, a sigh escaping from her mouth knowing that he was safe. Discord however, noticed her gaze aiming towards the young man, his eyebrow raised. “How peculiar. Going through so much trouble just for the sake of him. How VERY intriguing, Celestia.” For as much as he always acted like a buffoon from time to time, Celestia tended to forget that Discord’s wit was always razor sharp. However, she was already growing tired of his antics. “Not here, Discord. And if you have any respect for those girls, you will leave it be.” A witty retort was about to work its way out of Discord’s mouth, only for him to pause, his eyes veering over towards Fluttershy, standing ever so close to this mysterious young man. “Oh, very well then. But I will find out what makes that boy so special, Celestia. Count on it!” With a flash, Discord blipped out of view, only to reappear in front of Fluttershy and the others. “Ah, my dear Fluttershy! We have so much to catch up on. How about a drink and some gossip from my dear friend?” With some hesitation, Fluttershy relinquished her grip on Peter. But before she moved away, she planted a soft kiss on his lips. “I’ll be right back, ok? Have fun while I'm gone.” Watching her walk away, Peter couldn't help but feel a little worried. Applejack, seeing his concern, placed her hand on his shoulder once again. “She’ll be ok, Pete. Discord might be a loose canon at times, but he’ll never hurt her. Trust me on this.” While the room was still ablaze with chatter about the dance, the doors opened once again. This time, a couple of guards walked through, followed closely by someone who was dressed rather fanciful. Rarity's eyes widened at the sight of the new arrival. “Oh dear. It appears Prince Blueblood has joined the party.” Peter recalled Rarity's story about Blueblood, and how he had been crass and rude with her. “How could a relation of Celestia’s act like a total asshole?” He would soon get his answer as Blueblood seemed to be approaching them. “Rarity. What a pleasure to see you again.” The fashionista turned her nose up to the prince, failing to return the greeting. Instead of trying to keep her attention, Blueblood instead turned to face Peter, extending a hand out. “And who might you be, my good man?” While taken aback by this gesture, Peter didn't once consider acting rude in any way, and so returned the gesture in kind. “Peter Parker, Your Highness. A pleasure.” From the corner of his eye, Blueblood had noticed that Peter's tie was a tad crooked, and so went to fix it, catching everyone off guard. “A gentleman's attire should never be out of place, Mr. Parker.” A few seconds later and the tie was redone, looking even more fanciful than before. “And there we are. Much better. Very eye-catching.” “Uh, thank you!” Said a rather surprised Peter. “I hadn't even noticed it was loose.” Now he began to wonder if it had looked like that all night, with no one having a moment to tell him with all the excitement. “Think nothing of it, Mr. Parker. Everyone should look their best on such a night. Even those of us with bad manners.” Blueblood decreed, his eyes falling on Rarity, herself looking rather offended by the accusation. “Coming from you, that is rather rich. Given how you treated me at the last Gala!” While Rarity was getting rather flustered, Blueblood seemed to be keeping his composure quite well, leaving Peter confused. “I’m starting to get the feeling this is one of those stories that has two sides.” The others were waiting to see if an argument was about to kick off. Luckily, Peter was there to mediate. “Rarity? Is there any chance you didn't tell me the whole story about the last time you two met?” “Well… I um… I may have… sort of thrown myself at him last time we were here. I shall admit, I let my feelings get the better of me.” And there was the other side of the story Peter thought was there. “And I will admit” Added Blueblood, “That in the midst of things, I forgot my manners and treated you unfairly. A fault on both sides.” The prince extended his hand, a sign to make amends. Though a little hesitant, Rarity accepted the gesture, Blueblood pulling her in to kiss her hand. “And might I say, you look incredible, Rarity. Please, enjoy your night!” With a bow, Blueblood excused himself to join the party at large, leaving Rarity very confused. “Well… I suppose that's that then. Perhaps tonight will be enjoyable after all.” The orchestra could be heard warming up again, with many guests taking to the dancefloor for another go. Instead of mulling about, Rarity offered her hand out to Peter. “What say you, Mr. Parker? A quick dance for a friend?” A smile on his face, Peter took her hand as they headed to the dancefloor. At a small table across the way, Fluttershy and Discord were mid-discussion while partaking in some refreshments, both being choices non-alcoholic. Fluttershy had been regaling Discord with her activities the past few months: The Tantabus attack; Nightmare Night; meeting Princess Flurry Heart, and was just in the middle of Starlight’s attack on Ponyville. But the Spirit of Chaos couldn't help but notice she was omitting one key figure from all these events. “So, your friend Peter. Where was he in all of this?” Fluttershy’s mind ran wild with excuses, trying to think of anything. Should she say he hid? No. Then people would think he was a coward. But then saying he stood and fought would also raise questions. “He was helping people while the Princesses fought the villains. He’s a very brave man, Discord. I want you to be nice to him.” The Pegasus always did have a way of contrasting kindness and firmness when she wanted to. However, Discord failed to believe her words. “Well I hope he is indeed brave, considering he's not from Equestria.” All the blood drained away from Fluttershy's face, her drink hovering just before her lips. “How…? But you just met him. How could you know?” She asked, trying to be as quiet as possible as to not draw anymore attention than they already got. A smug Discord took a sip from his drink before answering. “My dear Fluttershy, how could I not know? His aura reeks of magic not from this world. I'm certain the Princesses must have come to the same conclusion once they got near him. I must say - a being from another dimension as your choice of mate? Bold of you.” While it was nice to actually hear him acknowledge Peter as her boyfriend, Fluttershy still couldn't help but feel worried as to what Discord’s interests were. “Yes. He is my choice. He has been nothing but kind to us since he got here. And he almost died fighting Sombra.” The Chaos Spirit's eyes widened at the idea that someone without access to magic could have beaten someone like King Sombra on his own. “Hmmm. A being of such physical prowess. Makes me wonder what the others on his world are like. Has he ever mentioned them?” This time, Flutterhsy didn't have to worry about making an excuse. She had no answers this time. “No. He hasn't really talked much about his world. We didn't even know he wasn't from here until a while ago. But I judge him by his actions here and now. And I judge him to be a good man.” Even with many unanswered questions, Fluttershy's faith in Peter held firm. Whatever fun Discord had in mind would have to be put on hold. For now. “Then I suppose there isn't much else to say except congratulations to you both. May your days be happy, Fluttershy. But if he harms you in ANY way…” Discord's tone turned eerily sinister, his eyes aglow with magic. “I know he won't.” Fluttershy said to placate him. “As I said: he's a good man.” Looking over towards her friends, Fluttershy had noticed Peter dancing along with the other girls, taking turns with them. Though with mixed results. “Then how about a formal introduction?” Discord inquired, his tone suggesting that he might actually be genuine. Fluttershy took a few moments to process his request, weighing up if it was worth it or not. “Alright. But you will behave, ok? I want you to Pinkie Swear on it!” Discord knew that a Pinkie Swear was basically an agreement written in blood, without the actual writing in blood part. It was something he knew Fluttershy and her friends took very seriously. “Very well then. Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye.” For Fluttershy this was enough, making her way over to her friends with Discord in tow. Peter, taking notice of their approach, ceased dancing. An uneasy tension formed in the air as he and Discord glared at each other, Fluttershy between the two as a barrier. “Discord, I would officially like for you to meet Peter Parker, my boyfriend.” Her cheeks went red at even the mention of Peter as her romantic partner, a detail Discord fully took note of. “Well Peter, it would seem Fluttershy is rather smitten with you. I trust those feelings are shared mutually by yourself?” It was very clear what was going on, and Peter knew it. He had figured that such questions would eventually be asked by Fluttershy's parents, but it appeared that the spirit of chaos would be the one to ask them first. “Absolutely.” He responded in full confidence. “She's been so kind to me ever since I arrived in Ponyville. No memory of where I came from; nowhere else to go. And she's always had faith in me when others haven't. It’s safe to say she's good at keeping some of my more nasty habits in check.” While Discord believed that the young man's feelings were genuine, he also knew that Peter had told one small lie. But a lie that he saw right through. “No memory you say?” He quizzed, leaning in closer to the group. “Or is it that you can't get back to whichever universe you popped out from?” While not in the least bit surprised that he knew, the girls were still furious that he did have some knowledge of Peter's true point of origin. And while the Spirit of Chaos was really tempted to cause a scene with such information, he also knew very well that such action would break Fluttershy's heart - something even he wouldn't dare do. “Oh, not to worry dear boy. Your secret is safe with me. But I warn you now, Peter: should you in any way harm Fluttershy, should that be physically or emotionally, intentional or unintentional, you’ll find chaos knocking on your front door. And no one will be able to save you.” A nauseating tingling shot up Peter's spine, his Spider-Sense telling him exactly just how serious Discord’s threat was. But even with the pain, Peter powered on through. “You can bet I’ll give my life for her before I ever even harm her. I promise you that.” “Then I guess we’re going to get along just fine. Enjoy the party, eat, drink and be merry, dance the night away, and do anything I wouldn't do. Understood?” Everyone wondered what Discord meant by that last part, all coming to the same conclusion slowly but surely. Before they could say another word, Discord had already left, gone in a flash as he teleported over to the other side of the room to strike up some conversation. The girls breathed a sigh of relief, having presumably survived any drama that may have unfolded. Peter began to feel his head stop pulsing now that he was no longer in Discord’s sights. For the time being. “Are you alright, Peter?” A concerned Fluttershy inquired as she hugged him tight. “Yeah. I’ve stared down worse than him. Trust me.” SEVERAL HOURS LATER Later into the night, many of the guests had begun to leave, a few stragglers still within the throne room. While Sonata and Aria were dancing by themselves, Adagio was nowhere to be seen, though she had been spotted leaving with someone earlier in the night. Best not to ask what was going on there. Cadence and Shining took advantage of the now almost empty dance floor to enjoy a dance all to themselves, with Flurry Heart safely in the arms of her Aunt Luna as she slept, the excitement of her first Gala having taken its toll. Celestia was in mid-conversation with a few guests, while at the same time having her eyes every so often check on Discord to make sure he was behaving himself. Twilight and Spike were also on the dance floor, the two of them no longer having to save face in front of a big crowd and could dance however they liked. With much of the orchestra having left, any instruments not belonging to them were now free for Dash, Applejack and Pinkie to mess around with discreetly. Rarity had excused herself, having done some damage to her dress (which she of course wasn't subtle about in the slightest). The last two unaccounted for guests had also excused themselves. Outside, on the rooftops of the castle, Peter and Fluttershy gazed out onto the city of Canterlot and beyond, a crescent moon shining down on the cloudless night. Though given it was still the middle of winter, it was still a touch cold, with Fluttershy now having Peter's jacket draped across her. “I guess I’ll have to tell my parents about us now, huh?” She remarked, giggling all the while, her mind still processing all the new feelings she was allowed to have tonight. “I suppose so, yeah.” Peter responded, himself trying to wrap his brain around the situation. But for the most part, he felt amazing. For the first time in months, he felt lighter than air. Looking down, he kissed Fluttershy on her forehead, earning a few more giggles from her. While the night had indeed been perfect, with some hiccups thrown in for good measure, something Discord said was hanging in the back of Fluttershy's mind. “What was your world like, Peter?” Perhaps he should have been surprised, but after being here for months, Peter knew that at some point someone would start to press him about where he came from. And now it was someone he knew he couldn't afford to lie to. Not anymore. “It was… so different compared to here. Only a small number of people had wings, or could use magic. Our technology is so different too.” Fluttershy’s thoughts were ablaze. She had heard about Twilight's stories from the mirror dimension, but there must have been more. “Are there others like you? People with powers?” Out of any question he could have been asked, this was the easiest for Peter to answer. “Oh yeah. Lots of them, believe me. My world has so many super-powered beings, you'd need a book to keep up with them all. Let's see… Oh, Vixen you would like! Her magical necklace gives her the abilities of any animal she wants! Who else, who else… Oh I know…….. Author's Note Sorry about the break everyone. I was on vacation for a couple weeks!
Episode 1 - Picking up the PiecesEpisode 1 - Picking up the Pieces TWO WEEKS AFTER THE BATTLE OF PONYVILLE A sunny sky cast itself across Equestria.
Bring someone else into this crazy life of mine, after everything that's happened?”
Episode 4 - So This Is HearthswarmingEpisode 4 - So This Is Hearth's Warming THE KENT FARM, TWO YEARS AGO May and Martha had been working around the clock almost all day.
