Octavia was doing the dishes. It was roughly 2:00pm. The sun was blaring through the window into the kitchen, and Octavia was humming a little tune as she scrubbed. A piece that wasn’t her own. Not that she was really aware she was humming to begin with.
It consisted, sometimes, of wubs. And it was in her falsetto, so it made the DJ's dubstep sound somewhat like it came from the Pony Tones.
Not that she noticed.
It was a good day to get things done. She had nothing scheduled for the entire day.
Usually when a day was miraculously free, she’d spend at least a few solid hours practicing or writing new music.
But not today.
Today was, although difficult for her, very intentionally free. It was written down in her schedule as “nothing day” and it had been planned nearly a whole month in advance. Not even practice was meant to sneak its way in.
A very, very difficult task to accomplish indeed, but it was a promise.
The only thing she could allow herself to do was these quiet little house chores. Chores that, very intentionally indeed, did not necessarily need to be finished once they were started.
And you know? It was actually kind of nice.
…If a little lonely so far.
She pondered, as she hummed and sang in her falsetto, just when Vinyl was going to finally pry herself out of bed.
Octavia had gotten up at exactly 7:00am herself, not that she’d needed an alarm clock. And she valued that instinct. The earlier she woke, she felt, the longer her day. And the longer her day, she felt, the more work could be done.
Scrubbing the last plate squeaky clean, she turned the sink off and began placing all of the cleaned dishware into their assigned cabinets.
Only… today was her freeday. Her “nothing day,” as officially written in her schedule.
And she never really realized just how unbearably long the span between 7:00am and the current, what-- Octavia flicked a glance to the clock on the wall for not the first time-- 2:13pm to really be.
…Only 2:13pm?
It had only been thirteen minutes since 2:00pm?
...Okay, it was far too quiet without practice after all.
Well, no matter. There was still plenty of time left for Vinyl to come out, and for them to blast violently obnoxious music at each other for hours on end in a relentless war of sound waves. Just as soon as she got out of bed…
With a faint smile of accomplishment tugging at the corner of her lips, Octavia placed the last fork in its--
But it levitated out of her hoof and swirled around to stab a slice of pumpkin bread laying out on the counter.
“Vinyl!” Octavia swirled around herself to meet with the audacious unicorn standing just behind her, horn aglow with a blanket still draped over her back and tugged over her legs.
The DJ snickered, not turning to face her. She only plucked a piece of bread from its tray and ate it with the probably intentional ‘slick’ sound of her teeth sliding off the fork. A very stupid grin plastered on her face as she chewed.
Octavia let out an unrefined giggle and shook her head. “You’re so bad. I didn’t even hear you coming.”
Vinyl lifted a brow from beneath her shades with a tiny dip of her head.
Octavia rolled her eyes. “Okay, okay, I never do. Shut up.”
Vinyl was going in for seconds now.
“Is that good? Are you enjoying that freshly baked pumpkin bread that totally just popped out of nowhere for your convenience?”
Vinyl nodded quite happily and levitated a plate out from the cabinet Octavia had just finished with. She got herself a very large slice. Octavia couldn't see her eyes through the shades, but she didn’t need to in order to know that they were practically glowing with excitement.
“Oh wow, you really do don’t you.” Octavia couldn’t help but chuckle at the unrelenting display of love for the bread, and she could feel her cheeks puffing in a smile of involuntary pride. “I’m glad. I haven’t actually tried it myself as of yet, but I added a bit of spice to it I thought you might like.”
Just then, another plate and fork flew out from their respective openings, and another comically large slice made its way onto the plate next to the fork. It levitated over to Octavia in a kind gesture.
Octavia barely had time to react besides taking the plate in her hoof before the DJ trotted giddily into the living room with her own.
“Where the hay are you going? I expect you to utilize this ‘nothing day’ with me you were so adamant about.” She trotted after Vinyl and found her slouching on the sofa, hoof extending out from her blankets to grab the TV remote. Powered on, found Hulu.
Vinyl contently padded the spot next to her, and even scooted a little for room.
She never did that. Usually Octavia just had to move the lazy bum herself.
With a sigh, the cellist trotted over and made herself comfortable on the couch beside her, prepared to munch on her pumpkin bread that was apparently so good.
Vinyl scrolled to a series: Kitchen Nightmares. She glanced over for approval.
“Hm. I approve,” she assented. “Although it’s such a ridiculous show, really. The only thing that ram is qualified for is the cooking, not the mending of family relationships and whatnot. It's really quite strange how he thinks he’s so much better than everypony else.”
Vinyl stifled a laugh and cocked her head at her.
“Don’t you even dare! I am nothing like Gordan Ramsay!” She hollered in offense, and then, after a small moment, murmured from the corner of her lips. “That pompous swine.”
Another snort from the DJ and the both of them snickered.
Suddenly, Octavia thought, one quiet day wouldn’t be so bad.
