The Trotting Dead
Canterlot Ruins
Previous ChapterTwilight slowly opened her eyes, her breathing was slow as she tried to look around herself. The darkness of the night surrounded her, turning her head to the left Twilight could see the forest around her as the trees stood still. From between the trees Twilight can see the carriage from before, soon her memories came flooding back in, the mare and the stallion from before. How they attacked her, the state the bodies were in though it didn't seem to even bother the ponies as they stumbled toward her.
Energy shot through Twilight's body as she shot up onto her hooves, backing away from the cliff. Her breathing quickened while she looked at the edge, as if the two ponies would appear at the edge any second now. A few seconds would pass as Twilight stared quietly, her ears trying to pick up any noise nearby. “Is he dead… Did i kill a stallion?” Twilight asked quietly as she looked around her.
Taking one step forward, Twilight looked over the edge. Seeing nothing but darkness below Twilight casted a illumination spell, her horn shined through the darkness of the forest, casting shadows all over the place. Twilight aimed her head low and toward the darkness below. The area below her was quite, the mare seemingly wandered off as the stallion's body laid on the ground. No movement from it, a few steps away was a carcass of a dead bunny. Bloody hoof prints lead into the forest. “Sweet Celestia…” Twilight whispered to herself her eyes returned to the stallion on the ground.
“I just killed a stallion… I didn’t have a choice, he was infected! There was no other way, right?” Twilight thought internally as she stared at the body, the image of the stallion's face, his milky white eyes flashed through Twilight's mind. Twilight's stomach twisted and turned as she felt acid rise up her throat.
Shaking her head away Twilight managed to keep her stomach relaxed as she looked toward the carriage. Trotting over to the carriage, Twilight’s thoughts kept thinking about the stallion she just killed. “Everypony will understand, they have too. He no they attacked a Princess, they were breaking the law. But that was this virus that made them do that, there is procedures.”
Twilight had reached the carriage, looking at the broken ride Twilight sat before it, “Regardless, I need to get going. Celestia is still waiting on me and…” Twilight started as her mind finally caught up with her “Celestia! Oh what day is it? What time is it?” Twilight thought to herself running down the road, Twilight opened her wings, though sore Twilight forced her wings to fly.
Staying low at first for her wings to get ready, Twilight flew up to the roof of the forest. Passing branches and leaves, Twilight soon exited the forest and hovered in place for a second. Looking around Twilight thought of where Canterlot could be, using the stars to guide her, Twilight faced toward the north east. “Celestia is counting on us. I have to hurry!” Twilight said as she flapped her wings to push herself toward Canterlot.
Twilight flew past farms and mines as she flew, Rockypoint being left behind her, the smoke from the city not registering in her mind as her only mission was to get to Canterlot, faster than ever.
Twilight would continue to fly past hills and mountains, going above trees and rivers. Only stopping to rest, drink or eat. The trip was long and hard, as two days came and went. Twilight managed to make it to ponyville before reaching Canterlot.
Twilight looked at ponyville, trying to see from her distance if the small town she called home was alright. The first thing she noticed was that the ponies within ponyville were nowhere to be seen. Worry slowly raised up in Twilight, “Spike?” Twilight quietly asked. Looking at the roads that lead out of ponyville Twilight could see a guard post, but no guard.
Finally looking at the railroads of Ponyville, Twilight saw one of the trains of Equestria sitting there, no pony getting on, no pony getting off. In fact it seemed that the train was left behind. As if running from this threat was a better option than waiting for the train to run.
Getting closer to Ponyville with each flap of her wings, Twilight looked at Canterlot then back toward Ponyville. “Celestia needed me a while ago. I should go talk to her and learn more about what is happening here.” Twilight first thought to herself as she slowly faced Canterlot. “but my friends could be in Ponyville. And Spike, if he is still in the castle waiting for me then he must be terrified.”
Looking back and forth from Canterlot to Ponyville, Twilight made her choice. “Hold on Spike, I’ll be back.” Twilight whispered toward Ponyville, turning her back to the town Twilight faced toward Canterlot.
Continuing her flight Twilight turned her head to Ponyville a few times, her mind focusing on the mission but her heart begging her to turn back and get Spike, get Starlight, and bring them to Canterlot.
Twilight forced her head toward Canterlot as she started to fly up the mountain. Though she had done this task before and with ease, now Twilight was struggling due to the lack of proper sleep and meals. Once reaching the top of the mountain, Twilight landed on the road that led to the Canterlot city’s entrance.
Looking at the city’s entrance Twilight saw guard post, sandbags, even barbed wire along the area. Magical blast marks were on the ground and the walls of Canterlot City. Carts and Carriages both leading into Canterlot and out of it made a traffic jam. “Am I too late?” Twilight asked, her eyes widening with fear as she took a step toward the entrance.
Looking into one carriage that was nearby her Twilight instinctively gagged as she saw the corpse of a mare, leaning her head and arm out the window. The sun doing its work on the corpse. “Oh, Celestia…” Twilight whispered under her breath as she stepped away from the cart. Tripping over a suitcase, Twilight stumbled onto another carriage. Bumping hard into it.
Looking at the carriage, Twilight only saw the bodies of a mare and a stallion, both of their heads had a hole on them. Their lifeless bodies looked to the sky as their hooves held to one another’s. Twilight finally couldn't hold it back, looking away and toward the ground, Twilight let all her stomach out.
Throwing up on the ground, Twilight coughed, feeling the pain in her throat and the disgusting taste in her mouth. Taking a second to breath Twilight looked around herself. Suitcases, personal belongings and carriages along with pieces of the Royal Guards armor layed around her, blood harden and soaking most of the items around her.
Getting back up, Twilight turned around toward the entrance and started to run. Running past the carriage, and sprawled on the ground, Twilight reached a fence before her. Though the fence was seemingly pushed through, Twilight could still see bloody hoof prints on it, some parts having splats of blood as if a pony repeatedly slammed their body onto it.
The fence wasnt what stopped Twilight in her place. Past the fence but before the gates of Canterlot, Twilight saw piles upon piles of ponies layed about the area. The ponies looked as if they had started the early signs of decay, filling the air with the scent of death.
Taking a step toward the area before the gates Twilight looked around her. Fear started to take hold of her as she passed through small piles of ponies. The area seemed to have become a battle ground, sandbags positioned on specific areas. A guard tower tipped over and seemingly burned to a crisp.
Royal guard members layed on the ground or in the piles, some were facing away Canterlot, but many seemed to have tried to run into Canterlot. Twilight couldn't believe her eyes, wondering if this was all due to the virus Celestia written about.
Looking at the ponies around her, Twilight noticed that most, if not all, had a wound on their head. Not in the same area but close to where the brain was. Twilight even noticed some were missing flesh in various areas of their bodies. Not wishing to get closer to the dead, Twilight assumed it was due to decay.
A soft squishing noise caught Twilight's attention. Feeling a cold wet substance on her front hoof, Twilight slowly turned away from the pile of ponies and looked at her hooves. Below her was a mare, her lifeless eyes looking to the sky as her insides laid across the floor. The mare's hind legs, seemingly nowhere to be found.
Horror fills Twilight's eyes as her hoof was pulled back quickly, the instestan she accidentally stepped on slowly oozed more blood out. “How… Why did this happen?” Twilight said out loud as she looked around her. The bodies upon bodies of stallions, mares, even fillies and colts laid across the area.
Twilight looked at her hooves as she started to wonder what the city before her had to offer. Her eyes now released the tears she had tried to hold in as her vision became blurry. “Celestia… Luna… girls. They are all fine, right? They have to be fine.” Twilight whispered to herself praying that her friends and family would be safe.
While Twilight cried, she thought she heard the hoof steps of a pony nearby. Looking around her, Twilight saw no pony there, facing the drop bridge of Canterlot, Twilight thought she saw somepony walking from the other side of the gate. “H-Hello” Twilight managed to say.
No pony responded. Getting up, Twilight stepped closer to the gate, thinking that the pony didn’t hear her. Walking onto the drawbridge, Twilight noticed the ponies that scattered the area all seemed to have been facing Canterlot’s gate. Their blood leaked into the river below the bridge as it seemed to go down the waterfall that led into the lands of Equestria.
Looking at the gate ahead Twilight could see the metal fence had been put down, this was usually done to keep threats from entering the city. At the gate, a couple of bodies laid before the gate, the same fatal wound on their heads. Looking past the ponies and the gate, Twilight saw there was no guard to be seen. “Hello? Is somepony there?” Twilight asked, but nopony came.
Looking around the gate to see if a guard had simply fallen asleep or ignored her, Twilight noticed a blood trail, leading from the dead ponies, through the metal gates and into Canterlot. “Hello? Guard? This is Princess Twilight Sparkle. I need to see Princess Celestia it urgent and I am already as late as it is! If you can open the gate and let me in it would be very helpful.” Twilight spoke to the area before her.
No response came as Twilight thought of what to do. Waiting for a few minutes Twilight heard the hoofsteps again. This time she could identify they came from behind. Looking at the mess behind her, Twilight saw no one there. Feeling more worried, Twilight thought of how to enter Canterlot.
“I can fly in, it won't be that hard. But they might think I am infected or a threat and shoot me down, or teleport me to where the other infected are.” Twilight thought to herself in a whisper. Looking around Twilight soon thought of other ideas not wanting to be stuck in a room with the infected. “Well, teleportation is never a bad option.” Twilight thought
Stepping back and focusing on her magic, Twilight breathed in and out. Calming her mind and focusing on the spell, while she was doing this Twilight could still hear the footsteps behind her, this time she realized, there were more of them than before.
Having her focus broken Twilight turned around seeing figures moving from side to side, in between the carriages, Twilight smiled. Finally about to see more ponies Twilight though that she will finally get some answers. But if that was the case, why did she feel like she needed to run away. “Hello? Do you guys know what is happening here? It's Princess Twilight Sparkle. I have been trying to get to Canterlot for the last few days.” Twilight explained.
About to walk toward the group of ponies, Twilight heard something she didn't realize before. Growls and moans, Twilight quietly waited to see if any of them would yell for help or respond but only growls came from the group.
Twilight's mind quickly flashed the images of the mare and stallion she had encountered in the woods near Pinkies farm. Her stomach dropped as she dreaded the thought of more of them. “Hello? Please say something.” Twilight begged, the growls only became louder.
Though Twilight couldn't see past the piles of ponies and carriages, Twilight knew she had to hurry, lighting up her magic again. Twilight started to focus on the spell all while she looked at the fence before her.
The first to reveal themselves were the Pegasus in the sky, Twilight didn't need to be close to see that these ponies were not normal. Some of their bones were broken in weird angles as others were missing parts of their bodies. The undead pegasus groaned and growled, as they spotted the alicorn and started to lower themselves.
Around the piles of bodies and broken off fences, Twilight saw Earth Ponies and Unicorns revealing themselves. The undead poneis all noticed Twilight right away as they stumbled and pushed one another to get to her. “Stay back!” Twilight shouted at them, her horn shining brighter. “I- I will shoot! Stay back!”
The ponies didn’t seem to be threatened as they trotted toward her. Looking around herself, Twilight kept focusing on the teleportation spell, but with all the stress she was dealing with the spell struggled to be finished. “Stay back! Please!” Twilight begged the ponies
While using her magic to pull the stallion out of the pile, Twilight faced the horde of ponies, as they finally reached the edge of the drawbridge. Using her magic she shot a magic beam at one of the first ponies. Hitting his chest and burning through it, Twilight realized he was still trotting toward her.
As the ponies were inching closer, Twilight shot another magical beam. This one hit a mare on the neck, her head leaned to one side as the flesh tore making the head barely dangle off the spine. Twilight released her focus on the teleportation spell as she shot another magic beam.
An earth pony to the left took the shot on its right leg. Though it burned through the earth pony's leg it still tried to walk toward Twilight, the second it placed weight on its damaged limb, the leg broke from beneath him making the earth pony and a limping unicorn fall into the water below.
Twilight had finally pulled the royal guard from underneath the pile. Running to it Twilight removed the royal guards helmet off while trying to shoot more beams at the ponies. Not facing the royal guard as she shot, Twilight realized that the mare was still moving. Turning around to face the mare, Twilight saw half of the mare's jaw was hanging off as she growled and reached for Twilight.
Without thinking, Twilight blasted her magic at the mare’s head point blank. The mares head blew up into many pieces as it went limp, Twilight looked in horror at what she had just done. Hearing the growling behind her getting louder and louder, Twilight shook herself out of her shock. Turning around, Twilight saw one of the pegasus from above diving down at her.
Using her levitation, Twilight placed the helmet on as she started to take the royal guards armor off. Getting an idea, Twilight started to make a bubble around her. The ponies had barely gotten to her as the bubble went up. Pegasus, Earth Ponies and Unicorns all slammed onto the bubble around Twilight. Some Pegasus flew to the air and dropped down onto the bubble, earth ponies used their raw strength to break the bubble, as the unicorn's horns started to light up. Twilight could feel their magic trying to grab her in a telekinetic spell.
Putting the rest of the armor on, Twilight started to sweat as she thought of her next steps on the plan. The hoof plates fit on well as she then put the body piece on, her wings fitting around the sides of the armor as she looked up at her attackers. The ponies growled and moaned their eyes showing no life beneath them as some started to make cracks onto the bubble, the cracks sending waves of pain into Twilights mind. “Please Celestia be with me!” Twilight said as she faced toward the right, though difficult to see through the ponies, Twilight could see the edge of the drawbridge.
Taking her first step, Twilight felt the strength of the ponies pushing at her from all sides, though difficult the bubble moved only an inch. Taking another step, Twilight felt the cracks around her bubble getting larger. Her head throbbed with pain as she looked ahead. Being pushed back by the horde, Twilight felt the bubble sheild breaking, “No, no no no! Stop!” Twilight begged as she looked at the parts of the sheild that broke.
Looking around herself, Twilight looked at the edge of the drawbridge. “I can make it! If I run I can I make it!.” Twilight thought to herself as the cracks on the bubble started to reach around the bubble.
Looking at her goal, Twilight charged up her magic. Making the bubble expand more and more, the cracks stretching the bubble as Twilight struggled to expand the bubble. Though only becoming just a bit bigger than before, Twilight prepared herself, her magic in her horn shined brighter as she yelled. The bubble around her popped outward. Sending many of the ponies off the drawbridge and into the water, some were pushed back into others or onto the ground. Many just stumbled back as they continued to walk toward Twilight.
Twilight ran toward the edge of the drawbridge. The ponies around Twilight were pushed aside by her magic or by her body in a shove to get them away from her. Though some of the unicorns reached out to Twilight with their magic, none made it as other ponies got in the way. The pegasus in the sky dove down to get at Twilight, some bumped into others as they flew as for those that managed to get close, missed Twilight by inches.
Twilight didnt turn around, nor did she shoot another blast as her only focus was to get to the edge of the drawbridge. Upon reaching the edge of the bridge Twilight jumped and extended her wings, before she could fly off a force had grabbed at Twilight's back leg. Looking behind her, Twilight saw multiple magical auras grabbing onto her back leg as they started to pull her back to the drawbridge.
Pain shot up, as Twilight felt the leg being pulled, fearful that her leg will be ripped off Twilight slowed her wings down, trying to keep a steady pace so as to not let her leg get dislocated, Turning her head around to see if she could do something to save her, Twilight saw nothing. Getting closer and closer to the bridge, Twilight started to shoot magical blasts at the ponies, hitting many of her targets and seeing many more fall into the water below, being too eager for a bite, Twilight got an idea.
With little to no other option in her mind, Twilight closed her wings. Gravity pulled her down as the unicorn's pull wasn’t strong enough. As she hit the water, Twilight started to struggle with the current. Poking her head above the water, Twilight looked around to hold onto something. Being pulled down by the current of the waves and the weight of the armor, Twilight kicked and pushed toward the surface.
Her head popped up as the waterfall behind her got louder, telling her that she was getting closer to the edge. Looking at the waterfall, Twilight saw exactly what she needed, a rock at the edge of the waterfall. Opening her wings in certain areas as she kicked and padded against the current, Twilight guided herself toward the rock.
As Twilight reached the waterfall she braced for impact as she hit the rock. The impact winded Twilight for a second as she opened her hooves wide as if to hug the rock. Twilight held onto the rock for dear life, the waves trying to force her down the fall.
After taking a second to recollect her breath and thoughts, Twilight slowly pushed herself onto the rock. Though the armor was heavy, Twilight could tell it was a good idea to grab it from the small pains on her stomach from landing on the rock. Laying on her back Twilight breathed for a few seconds as she looked to the sky.
Above her, the sky was becoming dusk, and was very cloudy. Sometimes Twilight would see a Pegasus from the horde fly off but they didn't seem to notice her. Twilight slowly started to get up after a few minutes though exhausted, Twilight pushed herself to her hooves. Looking around Twilight noticed the horde on the drawbridge had started to disperse around the carriages. Some banged onto the metal gate, others fell into the water and down the fall, but none seemed to have noticed Twilight.
Looking at the Canterlot walls, Twilight thought to why no pony came to help her, no guards appearing to push the sick ponies away or even to keep the sick Pegasus out. “Canterlot couldn’t have fallen, right?” Twilight asked herself as she watched the city.
As she watched the wall another thought appeared in her head, “What if the princesses are infected.” Twilight whispered her mind thinking of a image of Celestia infected with this sickness
Without taking a second to think of her next action, Twilight took to the sky, flying over Canterlots walls and about to continue to fly. Twilight gasped at the scene before her.
Twilight looked at a dead city, the buildings that would hold light and life within them around this hour were now dead. Some laid in ruins, others barricaded by wood or metal plates. Twilights wings almost stopped flapping as she managed to lower herself slowly to the ground.
Her shock took over as she looked around her. Twilight was speechless, as the sun slowly setted behind the mountains. Taking her first step, Twilight looked around at the stores and restaurants around her.
Some of the doors were busted down their hinges, others windows were broken, bloody hooves leading into the buildings. On the streets were papers and trash spread across the area, the city seemingly abandoned.
With her heart getting heavier and heavier by the second to the sight before her, Twilight sat down in the middle of the road. Her tears are now falling out of her eyes. “Princess Celestia, Princess Luna… everypony, I failed you.” Twilights whispered to herself. Not knowing what else to do, Twilight just snaked her head into her forelegs.
Twilight stopped as she heard a sound, at first it was quiet, but slowly the sound became present. Moaning and growling, Twilight turned around to see if the horde broke through the gate.
Seeing nothing, Twilight looked ahead of her. At first Twilight couldn’t see anything with the sun shining onto her eyes, but with the last shines of the sun setting, Twilight saw it.
Coming from deeper in the city, a horde stumbled and trotted. As the sun went out, the moon rose giving Twilight some lighting to utilize. Running toward a nearby alley, Twilight hid near a dumpster. The food rotten within as flies flew around it, placing maggots and surviving off the rot.
Twilight muffled her gag as she looked at the food. Ahead of her on the street, Twilight saw the horde of ponies walk past her. Not seeming to have noticed her, Twilight quietly watched her eyes filling with tears as some of the ponies in the horde Twilight recognized her first grade magic teacher, the gardeners of the castle. Even Shining Armors friends who were in the royal guard.
Twilight cloud only watched as they trotted past her. As they walked, Twilight saw a mare on the ground dragging herself to follow the horde, the only king she had was her front right foreleg. Many of the ponies were missing chunks of their skin and cost as even one stallion was dragging his insides on the ground. “What in Equestria did this infection do?” Twilight asked in shock.
Twilights body had been stepping back on its own, trying to get away from the horde. It only stopped when Twilight bumped into a trash can, making the can fall over and crash onto the ground. The loud metallic crashes made Twilight freeze in fear as she looked back to the horde. The attention of a few ponies were grabbed.
Looking at the noise the ponies trotted into the alley. Though they were slow, Twilight didn’t hesitate this time, her adrenaline kicking in and her fight and flight now at full attention, Twilight started a magical beam. The magic seemed to have gotten the ponies attention as they slowly speeded toward Twilight.
The first magical blast was shot hitting a mare in the side. The mare stumbled and tripped, some of the ponies fell over the mare as they hit the ground. Shooting another magical beam, Twilight struck at a stallions head.
Hearing the body drop to the ground, Twilight focused another shot as she turned and ran deeper into the alley. The horde followed after the alicorn as their growls and snarls echoed into the alley.
The armor on Twilight’s body clanked and clattered on one another as Twilight shot another blast behind her. Not caring to aim Twilight only shot. Turning the corner Twilight saw more ponies in front of her, the alleys seemingly becoming a horrible idea. As a mare lunged at Twilight, Twilight's horn shot a blast, the mare's body went limp as a hole appeared in her head from the blast.
The blood of the mare splattered on Twilight’s face, her eyes opening wide as she spit onto the ground and blew air out of her nose. Before worrying about the substances on her, Twilight saw another pony try it’s luck. Using levitation Twilight grabbed a trash can lid and slammed it onto the stallion the force was only enough to push the stallion onto the ground.
The horde around Twilight got close as magic was being used to grab her. The magic weak at first but as one layer upon another layer of magic was added from different unicorns Twilight struggled to break free. Being dragged into the horde itself Twilight didn’t have any idea on how she was to get out.
Flapping her wings and getting above the horde the horde kept its pull on her as Twilight kept flapping. Twilight tried to shoot at any unicorn she could see but to no avail.
Slowly being brought back down due to Twilight's tired wings and the horde's insistent pulls, Twilight heard growls above as Pegasus floated down to her. The Pegasus pushed one another as they fell from the sky or tried to tackle Twilight.
With quick thinking Twilight shot at their wings making them fly past her and crash land into the horde. As she continued to do so Twilight managed to shoot a mare point blank into her head. Already being above Twilight, the mare’s decapitated body was falling onto Twilight. Taking a few more shot out of instinct Twilight hit it two more times, one in the stomach and one on the neck as the decapitated body and Twilight both fell into the horde.
Blood, guts and brain matter landed onto Twilight, the princess disgusted but tired. The horde had beaten her, her magic was on low, her wings couldn’t flap anymore and she was in the middle of a horde of undead ponies. “This is it, they will infect me and I will become like them. This… this is the end.” Twilight thought to herself as her tears filled her eyes, her focus tuning to look at the stars in the night sky.
A few seconds passed, then a minute, then five. Then Twilight realized, the horde seemed to have ignored her. Moving her focus from the night sky to the ponies above her, none of the stallions or mares seemed to pay her any attention as they continued to walk past one another.
Confusion filled her head as she heard a growl to her left ear. Turning to her left Twilight saw one of the stallions Pegasus she shot down. His limbs were broken and twisted in wrong ways. The body hardly looked well enough for a pony to be alive but Twilight knew better. The stallion crawled on the ground with its forelegs, pushing himself around the horde. Twilight expected the stallion to lunge at her any second now but the stallion only continued to crawl past her.
Twilight looked confused as she slowly pushed the lifeless body that was still on her off. The mare's blood and guts had soaked into Twilight's fur, but other than that Twilight seemed to be fine. Getting onto her hooves, Twilight looked around herself, only seeing ponies walking past her.
Looking for the nearest way out, Twilight started to walk toward the alley's exit. Bumping and walking past the ponies that had tried to end her life, Twilight couldn’t help but shiver at the thought of what they could have done to her.
Taking slow and steady steps so as to not get the ponies attention, Twilight had finally made it out of the alley way. The horde only seemed to have become spreaded and separated from one another giving Twilight the ability to move around a bit smoother.
Looking around herself, Twilight shook with fear and excitement that she got out of the situation alive and in one piece. The ponies didn’t seem to take notice of her as she thought of her next plan.
While thinking of the events Twilight was pushed by a stallion behind her, the stallion groaned at Twilight as he stared at her. Twilight looked to the ground and back at the stallion, in a moment of fear, clarity, or just stupidity Twilight growled back. The stallion looked away as he continued on his path. Twilights couldn’t help but let a small sigh or relief out. “Maybe I should move, he didn’t seem to think it was normal.” Twilights thought to herself.
Twilight started to walk past the ponies around her as she looked forward. Heading for the castle Twilight needed answers, maybe even some closure on Celestias and Luna's fate.
Walking down the street, Twilight saw ponies walking left and right of her. None seemed to put any attention to her as she walked by. After a while, Twilight started to see less and less ponies walking by her until she was alone again.
Not stopping until she knew she was safe, Twilight continued to walk toward the castle. Seeing the castle in the distance Twilight couldn’t help but feel a bit of happiness was starting to rise within her.
Until she walked into a sudden walk. Stepping back in confusion, Twilight looked ahead of her. Putting her foreleg out in front of her. Twilight can feel the wall before her. As her hoof touched the invisible wall Twilight can see the magical force field reveal itself. Celestia's magical aura shined at Twilight. Looking around the area she touched Twilight saw that the area she touched was the only part lighting up.
Twilight looked behind the magical force field, seeing no pony within all Twilight stared ahead, “Is somepony there?” Twilights asked into the area ahead. Quick hoofsteps were heard as somepony poked their head out of a buildings window.
