As the late afternoon of that summer day faded, the thick grass that led up the hill to Sweet Apple Acres exhaled, gratefully, releasing the intense heat of that early burning noonday sun into a warm, summer evening.
Twilight's hooves crunched steadily and softly on the stone and dirt as she made up the path to the farm. She paused at the top of the hill and turned around to look out over the village below. She smiled and turned back toward the farmhouse.
The mixed smells of rich hay, fruits - especially apples, and that indescribable earthy-sweet scent of home filled her lungs, a scent that surrounded each member of the Apple family no matter where they were. Twilight had discovered it on her first day in Ponyville, and now it always felt like home. It made you want to be part of their world and home and wish you were one of them.
She went up to the farmhouse, stepped up on the porch, and paused. After that dirty trick Applejack had played, they hadn’t spoken in a week, and she wasn’t sure what to expect.
Why doesn’t friendship ever get easier? I hate this! Why did she do that? I should have just come here the day after what happened and straightened everything out, but that was a dirty trick! I should just turn around and march right back down to Ponyville! But she's my best friend. She just better not try to start that up again…still, I've been missing her so much...
Suddenly the screen door creaked open, and Applejack stood there smiling, “Howdy there, Twilight, come on in.”
“Oh, hi, Applejack, thanks,” Twilight smiled and walked into the farmhouse. As she passed Applejack, she sniffed, “Is that apple-scented shampoo?”
“eYup, I made it myself. I just got out of the shower, I figured I’d give it a try. Do you like it? I can let you have some if you’d like.”
Twilight turned around and looked back at her friend standing in the doorway, no red ribbon tying back her hair, the rays of the late day sun highlighting her golden mane. Twilight was suddenly struck by how it framed her face and green eyes.
How did I think I could ever stay angry at her?
"Twilight? You okay?"
“Oh, uh, yes, thanks, I will, it smells really nice. So, Rainbow said you wanted to see me. What’s up?”
“Now come on, Twilight, you know what’s up. We’ve been close friends for too long to play silly games. I just wanted us to clear up what happened last week. I reckoned you were coming up here, us having something to eat and talking was the best way for us to apologize. Come out to the porch and sit down. I’ll bring out some pi- I mean muffins. I used up the rest of the apples and baked some apple muffins. Oh, and don’t worry about any more of those horseflies- Big Mac just put up a new screen around the porch. We got some new furniture out there too - go have a sit.”
“Wow, we need to have fights more often!” she laughed, “I accept your apology.”
Applejack opened her mouth to say something but stopped. A scowl crossed her face until she forced a smile to erase it. "Y'all go on out to the porch, and I'll bring out some muffins."
"Mmm, just let me wash my hooves first." Twilight washed up and went out to the porch.
“Woah!” Twilight called out, “this new furniture is really nice, and this sofa is enormous! I just love white wicker!”
“Thanks, Twilight,” Applejack yelled back from the kitchen. “I picked it out myself, with Granny Smith’s help”.
“Where is she anyway?”
“They all went downtown to do some shopping,” Applejack said, stepping out onto the porch. “Well, here are my muffins. Let me know how you like ‘em,” She offered one to Twilight.
“This smells amazing,” Twilight bit off a good-sized piece from the top and started eating it. “Mmmm…”
Applejack smiled and took a healthy bite, chewing happily. Twilight, both cheeks full, chewed happily away. She glanced over at Applejack and stopped and scowled a little,
“Whah whuzau she asked.
What was what?” Applejack replied, puzzled.
Twilight swallowed, “That little smirk, I saw that.”
“Twilight, what in the hay are you talking about?”
“You know exactly what I’m talking about! I told you! I knew it was a joke - How could I not notice putting rocks and sticks into an apple pie? Okay, so I might get very focused on things once in a while, but not that time, I was just humoring you."
“ ‘course you were.”
“You still don’t believe me, do you, Applejack?”
“Yes, I do. Twilight, can we please not go through this all over again?”
Twilight turned to her, “I am completely aware of everything I’m doing, you know, I don’t just follow directions blindly!”
“I know.”
Twilight scowled fiercely, “Are you trying to start another fight, Applejack?”
“Twi, you and I are best friends, and last week I was just teasing you about getting so focused on following instructions that you weren’t aware of what you were actually doing. I’m sure you were just kidding around,” Applejack said, smiling.
The porch was silent. Twilight scowed again, “You don’t really believe that do you?”
“Twilight, it doesn’t matter, does it? You are the smartest pony I know, so what if you have a few idiosyncrasies?”
Twilight stood up, yelling, “I may have idiosyncrasies, but I do not get so focused on following directions that I lose track of what I’m actually doing!”
“Woah there, Twilight, it’s okay. It’s one of the things I love about you.”
“Well, you better find something else to love out about me because just like I told you, I am more than capable of-”
“Twilight, I get it, you didn’t have a chance to read through that recipe ahead of time, so you read it as you made it. I get it.”
“Do NOT patronize me, Applejack! I was just playing along with your stupid little test!”
“Of course you were.” Applejack smiled slyly.
“FINE! You want me to prove it? Give me another pie recipe!”
“You don’t have anything to prove, Twilight.”
“Well, clearly I do! Now, where’s that recipe?”
“I ain’t got one, plus we don’t have any apples here at the moment, and I’m too tuckered out to walk over to the barn to get ‘em clean ‘em peel ‘em….”
“Well, I’m certainly not going to leave here until this is settled! Now whadda got that I can make?” Twilight demanded. There were a few books on the white wicker table in front of the sofa. Twilight went through them and found one, "What's this book over here? "Recipes For Mares to Share: An Introduction to Your Next Level of Friendship.
“Oh, uh, I don’t know,” Applejack said.
"Hmm, where did you get it? Is it really a cookbook? " Twilight asked, examining the cover.
Well, not exactly, but there are all kinds of instructions in it."
"Where did you say you bought it?"
"Oh, yeah, well, I, uh, bought it at the spa yesterday.”
Twilight raised an eyebrow, “they sell books at the spa? Where?”
Applejack blushed, “In, um, the Mare Wellness room.”
Twilight’s eyes went wide. ”You went into the Mare Wellness Room? Behind the bead curtain?”
Clearly embarrassed, Applejack answered. “Well, uh, yeah, why not? Look, I went to the spa with Rarity, and when we were getting ready to leave, Rarity decided her mane wasn’t the way she wanted it, so she stayed in the locker room to fix it. ‘Of course, it was taking her forever, so I figured I’d find out what all the whispering was about - what was the big mystery of the ‘Wellness Room,’
Twilight leaned forward excitedly, “What happened? What was in there? Is there, you know...stuff?"
“Well, I’ll tell you if you give me a minute. I went in, and the room was pretty dark. They had a glass counter at the other end of the room lit up and some weird-looking things on the shelves. I think I knew what they were, so I turned around to leave, but Lyra and Bon Bon came in just then, and I bumped into them. I don’t know if they were surprised or embarrassed, but they smiled kinda funny, and we kinda said hi, but it was pretty embarrassing, especially since they seemed really surprised to see me in there. I didn’t want to look like I was, you know, some frightened filly by running out of the place, so I went over to look at the bookshelves. I saw this one here 'Recipes For Mares to Share: An Introduction to Your Next Level of Friendship.' Well, considering the state of the friendship I was in with a certain Alicorn, I decided to pick it up and have a look through the chapters. I noticed that Louts was watching me. She came over and asked if I was going to buy it or read it there. I was kinda embarrassed, so I bought it. I ain’t had much chance to read it, but from what I can tell, it ain’t like any cookbook I’ve ever seen.”
“Okay, fine, but what happened with Lyra and Bon Bon?” Twilight asked with excitement.
“Sheesh! I’m gettin to that. They had ordered something, and it had come in.”
“What was it?” Twilight demanded.
“I don't know - It was in a plain brown box. I'd guess it was about ten inches long, seven inches wide, and five inches deep. Not real big. Whatever was in it, I think there were two of them, but they never took them out of the box, so I don’t know. When Aloe opened the box, the two of them giggled like crazy and looked around to make sure nopony else saw them, you know, spying on them."
"Where were you?"
"Behind the bookshelves, spying on 'em."
Twilight smiled, "You naughty pony. Then what?"
"I think Lyra asked. I couldn't exactly tell, and they were all whispering. I think she asked Aloe if they were made from rubber. Aloe said it was a special kind of rubber. Then BonBon reached in the box, and it looked like she was sliding her hoof back and forth and saying how smooth they were. Lyra asked her, ‘Do you want the small one or the big one?’ Bon Bon shushed her and said, ‘Well, which one is which? One is longer, but the other is fatter’ Then Lyra said, ‘I just hope they fit!’ All three of them cracked up. Aloe told them once they get it past the head, to just slide it in and out slowly. They should take their time and enjoy it. She pointed to one of them and told them they could use it together at the same time. Then she gave them some kind of special oil to make them slippier and a cleaner or something for free. Lyra said, “Right now, I don’t need any oil at all, and Bon Bon laughed and said the same thing. Aloe then taped up the box and gave it to them. They just about ran out of the spa. I think they were headed home..”
Twilight put her hoof under her chin and began to think it through.“Hmmm, something long, rubbery, and smooth that they could slide in easily once they got past the head. Hmmm… Nope, I got nothing. So tell me about this cookbook.”
“Well, that’s the strange part; it doesn’t say anything about food. From what I could see, it looks like each chapter has a list of steps you follow, kind of like a recipe. For example, I started to read chapter 7, “Don’t go to a state of bliss alone, have your friend come as well.” it looks like it’s instructions on how to massage a friend's hooves - you know to help them relax. I only read up to the fourth page. "
“That’s crazy! Why would anypony need instructions on how to relax?” Twilight asked, a little annoyed.
Applejack didn't appreciate her tone, “All I know is it’s got instructions in it!”
Picking up the book, Twilight quickly located chapter 7 and flipped through it. “Hmm, Chapter 7 looks like it’s long enough to prove my point. What’s this in the back? Tear-off checklists? With lines on the back for making notes! Oh, this is perfect! Let’s get started - it says the first step is to spread one or two large soft and fluffy towels under and around your friend. Hmmm, I wonder what that’s about?” Twilight materialized two large, soft, fluffy towels and lowered them onto the sofa. “Next, it says for your friend to lay back and relax,”
With care and precision, Twilight delicately folded along the tiny perforations on the page and tore out one of the checklists from the back of the book, materialized a pencil, and started writing. After a moment, she looked up from the book, “Well? Applejack, get over here and lay down on the sofa.”
The earth pony rolled her eyes, “Gee, thanks. I feel more relaxed already.” Applejack muttered as she walked over to the huge sofa and flopped down. “How’m I supposed to lay lengthwise?”
“Let me look - hmm, it doesn’t say. I’d say the way you are makes the most sense.”
Applejack grabbed the two throw pillows, placed them behind her head, picked up her back legs, lay back, and stretched out. She grinned sarcastically at Twilight.
Twilight squinted closely at her, “For the last time, I was just humoring you! ”
“Well, you sure seemed mighty upset when you cut that first slice.”
“I was pretending.”
“Then you sure are a hay of a good actress. But you gotta admit, the homemade vanilla ice cream made it all worthwhile.” Applejack said, twisting her body and settling into the sofa cushions.
Twilight scowled, “Are you comfortable yet?”
“eYup.”
“Clearly, I’m supposed to sit at your back hooves,” Twilight went to the other end of the sofa, moved Applejack’s tail out of the way, and sat down. She turned to her right and faced the blonde pony. “Good, let’s see what chapter 7 has to say …."
“Yes, let’s.”
Twilight gave a small scowl, then went back to the book:
” Are you having a rough patch with your friend? The solution is to go to a happy place and ask your friend to come along. To provide the correct relaxation, you must follow the instructions exactly. If you deviate from the process or don’t follow the steps in the correct sequence, the entire exercise will likely end in failure causing your friend more stress, and jeopardizing your friendship rather than bringing you closer together, so above all, remain focused.”
“Hmmm…” Twilight mused.
“Not too late to forget the whole thing,” Applejack offered.
“Really? Not a chance, blondie.”
“Okay.”
“Step one, massage your friend’s underhoof, Well, since you just showered, that shouldn’t be too bad,” Twilight said, still reading.
“Very funny, Twilight.”
As she returned to reading, Twilight said, “I love your sarcasm, Applejack. It says I should …massage the left rear one in a counter-clockwise motion 42 times…
Twilight lifted Applejack’s left leg and placed it in her lap. She gently pressed the tip of her hoof against Applejack’s soft underhoof and began to rub, watching closely, making sure she had it right. Applejack sighed deeply in appreciation.
Twilight continued reading, “Right - rub it in a clockwise motion 42 times. Okay, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,.. Wait, am I rubbing your underhoof? When did I start that? I don’t remember, I got so lost in the instructions…gee, I don’t know what I’m doing?” she said, continuing her massage, “What comes after 6 Rarity? Oh, wait, you’re not Rarity; you’re Applejack. Where am I?” Twilight grinned sarcastically at Applejack, who just smiled back. Twilight continued massaging, never missing a beat.
-”12, 13, 14… Go on, Applejack, you can, 18, 19, 20…”
“No, I don’t want to disturb you, Twi, this feels too good.”
“Mmm…” Twilight replied vaguely, reading.
“I’m starting to feel better already,” Applejack said with a smile.
“Huh? Oh, right, that’s good,” Twilight muttered, counting the rotations. 40, 41, 42. Done, and check,” she checked the little box and jotted down a note with her pencil:
Note, the researcher was able to maintain a conversation while performing the task. The subject began to relax.
“Good. What’s next?” She studied the book.
“Now massage it in a counter-clockwise motion 38 times. As you do, read every fourth word, and ensure the tip of your hoof is at the 12 o’clock position on her underhoof, this will set the rhythm. Every fourth word will be the count you’re on, so it will be easy to keep track of where you are. Read the sentences out loud.”
“This looks like it’s going to be a little more challenging and… kinda weird. One Relax your neck two, close your eyes three, take deep breath four, let out slow five…”
Applejack was loving it.
”...pat her rump fifteen, rub her tummy sixteen, say love you seventeen…”
Applejack’s eyebrow went up.
“... stroke her thigh twenty-nine, smile at her thirty, cock your head thirty-one, nip her ear, thirty-two…”
“What?” Applejack asked.
“...caress her cheek thirty-three…”
“Is that what it really says, Twilight?”
“...kiss her lips thirty-eight. Done and checked off. Note: Researcher successfully completed the task, subject more relaxed.-Applejack, is that accurate? Would you say you’re more relaxed?”
“Oh, yeah. But didn’t you think that stuff you were reading between the numbers was weird?”
“Huh?” Twilight asked. She looked at the instructions and gasped, “What is all this?” She quickly looked up, blushing, took another look at the instructions, blinked, cleared her throat, and in a sing-song mocking tone said, “Oh, will you look at that? There were silly things between the numbers that I didn’t even notice because I was too distracted by the instructions! Oh, my, I guess you were right, Applejack, I guess I am a dumb pony after all!”
“Your words, Princess, not mine. I never called you dumb, what I said was that sometimes you get so focused on the steps that you kinda lose track of what you’re doing.”
As Applejack talked, Twilight stood up, leaned over, and gently nipped her ear, “I bet you thought I missed that, didn’t you.” Twilight said, still blushing.
Applejack giggled but looked at her uncertainly. Twilight kept going, “See? I’m completely aware of everything I’m doing and everything around me. Give me a moment to add that to my notes.”
“I know Twilight, and I’m sorry I doubted you, you were really just playing a joke, okay?”
Twilight sat down at her hooves again, looked up at her, and rubbed her chin. “You’re still not convinced, are you?”
Applejack rolled her eyes in frustration, “Can’t you just let it go? Does it really matter?”
“YES!” Twilight snapped, “Now, are you convinced or not?”
Applejack, growing more annoyed, crossed her forelegs and looked away, “You know what? No, I ain’t! And I think this is stupid.”
“Stupid? It is NOT stupid! This book appears to be full of well-written thought-out lesson plans. The author provides well-constructed sentences that are a pleasure to read and proper instructions, even if they are a little weird that any student who applies themselves can follow. I don’t see any exercises at the end of the chapters, but I’m sure I can take care of that. Best of all, they provide checklists and a place to make notes! And you can stop rolling your eyes now, Applejack!”
“Excuse me, Sugarcube.”
“Now, what’s next? It says I’m supposed to put one hoof on the outside of your canon, or calf,”
“I know what a canon is, Twilight!” Applejack said sharply.
“Of course you do,” Twilight spoke as though talking to a filly. Applejack growled.
“Then I put my other hoof on the inside, moving them in counter-rotating circles as I gently move up toward your hip. Hmm, it doesn’t say for how long- oops, yes, it does. - 3 minutes for each canon.”
Twilight carefully began to rub Applejack's lower leg's inner and outer sides. “Ask me anything you want, farm girl!” She muttered to the count, “One Equestria, two Equestria, three Equestria, Four Equestia…”.
Applejack closed her eyes and let her head fall back on the pillow .”That feels great, Twilight. You’d never know you hadn’t done this before.”
“I’ve done quite a few things you don’t know about…eleven Equestria, twelve Equestria….” Twilight stopped rubbing and gently slid her hooves up toward the knee. She turned and read from the book, “Okay, now it says to do the same to your right leg,” Twilight shifted around, placing Applejack’s right leg in her lap and began massaging it.
“Oh, Twi, that feels better than the other one.”
“Well, that’s natural. It’s a typic sensational leg,” Twilight said, returning to muttering the count.
“Wait, what?” Applejack asked quickly, “what did you say?”
“I said that’s a typical sensation when switching legs.”
“That ain’t what you said.”
“Keep it up, Applejack. I know what I said. If you keep trying to confuse me, you’re just wasting your time...fourteen Equestria, fifteen Equestria, sixteen Equestria….” She finished and went back to her notepad and checked the next box. She flipped the sheet over and muttered as she wrote:

Applejack scowled at her.
Twilight continued reading, “Okay, so now I move to your upper leg and massage the inside of the upper part of your thigh with one hoof and your flank with the other. It says:
‘Make sure you move your hoof to the inner part of the thigh while the hoof on the flank is positioned directly across from it. Remember the hoof on the outer part of the leg should remain directly across from the inner part.’ once again, move them in counter-rotating circles as you slowly make your way up the leg until you reach the uppermost part of the inner thigh.
As instructed, Twilight scooted a little forward and started massaging Applejack’s leg just above the knee. Gradually she leaned forward, moving up toward her hip, both on the outer leg and inner thigh.
“One Equestria, two Equestria, I noticed that you had your hat cleaned - it looks very nice, and don’t let me forget to borrow some of that shampoo, six Equestria, seven Equestria, eight Equestira..” Twilight was near the top of her leg. “Yes, I’m sure I can find it where to use thigh shampoo.”
The massage had been relaxing up to this point, but now something else had started to happen, something Applejack had no experience with. None of the Mane Six had.
They’d had a lot of experiences, but for many reasons, not this particular kind. Ironically, Rainbow Dash was the worst of all. Applejack was more than happy to leave the mysteries of mama’s, papa’s, and how they made and had their babies to Big Mac. He was responsible for ensuring the farm animals were cared for once they got pregnant. When the topic got anywhere near that subject, Rainbow Dash would immediately change it, and the rest were happy to follow her lead. . As a result, they were all somewhat prudish.
As Twilight touched her, Applejack pushed herself back against the pillows a little, “Uh, Twi, you can stop now. You’re gettin kinda personal there….”
Her eyes suddenly opened wide as Twilight’s hoof brushed a little too high. She let out a tiny gasp, and a thought occurred to her: Oh no. It’s that apple pie thing all over again! But… if I stop her, she’ll laugh and say she knew exactly what she was doing and that I had to admit I was wrong last week, which I wasn’t! But the only way I can prove I was right is to let her keep going, and I don’t know how much more of this I can stand! Part of me knows that I gotta stop her, but dang, this feels better than gettin a blue ribbon at the Equestrian Fair, and part of me wants her to keep… I reckon I really should have thought things through a little better. Ohhhhh, that feeling between my legs…”
“...seventeen Equestria, eighteen Equestria….” Twilight continued reading the book as she moved her way farther up Applejack’s leg.
“Twi- Twilight, you shouldn’t- I think you oughta stop now, -ooooh that feels gooo-WOAH! Now that was getting a little too close to...ohhhyeaaaah,” Applejack moaned softly, “…you did it again, uh listen, Twilight, you really gotta stop. Something’s happening, and it ain’t… Twilight, I’m feeling something. I don’t think decent Ponies are supposed to feeeeloooOOOhhhhh.... ”
“...twenty Equestria, Applejack, I’m being sure this is to you amazing you, wait, hang on one second, firm, soft, left then right, okay and no offense, with a country pony, can’t understand-”
That instantly brought Applejack out of her fog, and she sat up, “Excuse me?!! ‘Country pony?’ Okay, fine! I can stand being embarrassed if you can. You’re almost at the last page anywayyyy… ohhh… but take all the time you need toooo.” She lowered herself back down onto the pillows.
“... twenty-four Equestria, twenty-five Equestria, I know exactly what I’m Equestria, Applejack, Equestria….”
Applejack closed her eyes and once again moaned in pleasure, then stared at the book, waiting for Twilight to get to the bottom of the page, finish the chapter,r and stop making her feel like this. Somewhere in her mind, thoughts of running into the bathroom to splash cold water between her legs occurred to her, but a much deeper part knew precisely what she would do once she closed and locked that bathroom door. She would keep doing what Twilight started, but without rubbing her legs - she’d reach down right between her legs and feel everything there, caress herself, try to finish whatever it was Twilight had started.
And then Twilight quickly turned the page and continued reading. To Applejack’s horror (and anticipation), It wasn’t the end of the chapter. Applejack’s expression froze.
“...twenty-eight Equestria. Applejack, it says you should feel like you’re coming to a new level of experience - at least if I’m doing it correctly. Would you describe what you’re feeling like a new level of experience?”
“Oh yeah…really new one, but Listen, Tw-”
However, the young Alicorn was back to her notes, “Good. Check and check. Next step.” Twilight muttered softly as she read, “Okay…Hmmm, well, it does make sense. So… apply pressure… precise… confirm….”
That was it. Applejack could see that Twilight had gone into full focus mode. It had happened with the pie, and she and Apple Bloom had snickered and elbowed each other in the ribs as they watched Twilight measure out the stones and layered them in the pie tin. All conversation was to confirm that the process was going as it should.
Twilight looked up from the book and squinted at the now swollen mound of fur between Applejack’s legs, then she looked back down at the book, back between Applejack’s legs, and placed one hoof on it, “That seems about right,” she went back to the book, as she read she asked, “How ya doin there Applejack?”
Applejack’s eyes had rolled partway back into her head, and her mouth was slightly slack-jawed, “Uhhh, yeah,” she moaned softly.
“Good, glad to hear it,” Twilight said automatically. She started to jiggle everything fast and hard. It was too much for the earth pony. The sensation in her vagina from the motion elicited a long sensual groan from Applejack. Her mouth more slack-jawed, she let her head tilt back and closed her eyes in ecstasy. Then the little voice started up in her head.

Twilight mumbled vaguely as she ticked off the previous step. “Check. Now the other side, " You know, moving my hooves in opposite directions like this is harder than it looks.” Applejack recognized that tone. She was no longer there, Twilight was alone in her lab, and at this point, anything was possible. With enough effort, Twilight could be stopped… but why?
“I’m starting to feel that way too,” Applejack moaned, “Uhhhooohhh that feels soooo gooood…”.
“Of course, she can’t, instructions count,” Twilight said, in a feeble effort to show her mind could still grasp the world outside her virtual world in her mind.
Next, she went to work on Applejack’s other leg. Already aroused, Applejack bit her lower lip and whimpered. Twilight muttered, “two hundred twenty-seven Equestria, two hundred twenty-eight Equestria, two hundred twenty-nine Equestria, Three Hundred Equestria, check!”
Applejack’s face was flushed pink, and her breathing had quickened.
“Ch-check already? Are you sure, Sugarcube? I feel like I was comin’ to that place they said in the book.”
“Yeah, whatever,” Twilight muttered, “don’t interrupt. Okay, according to the lesson, now we pick up speed, we have to move quickly between steps.”
