The house was empty when she arrived home. Arkessa abandoned her schoolbag by the door and trudged to the living room, wanting nothing more than to collapse onto the sofa. Her mother being away meant she could watch TV as loud as she wanted, so it was actually a blessing. Though, she wondered what her mother was up to. Was she lounging on a cloud after work? Spending time with her boyfriend?
Arkessa paused as she was flipping through the channels. Maybe her mother was out shopping for her birthday. She smiled contentedly at the thought as she finally decided on a channel. Settling in, she figured she could ignore her homework for now, if she was going to be out and about all day for her best birthday ever. The retro channel was playing her favorite cartoon, so this was turning out to be a great afternoon.
Arkessa played with her hair absently while she watched, the bright strands among a sea of blue turning dark as she conjured a dark shadowy tendril with her magic. Arkessa recalled how terrified her mother had been when they discovered she had done it, completely by mistake when she had cut herself washing dishes. It was wild and chaotic, black shadow magic pouring out of her body through any orifice it could. It only lasted a few moments and had tasted cold, flavorless, and stagnant.
That was the day her mother told her a piece of information she had never heard before. Her father's identity.
A demon.
Before that intriguing life event, she and everyone else around her believed she must have been part bat-pony. Her mother had only described her father to be a vile wretched thing and had refused to talk about him, until the event. Even then, her mother remained tight-lipped on the subject. From how quiet she got, Arkessa hoped she would never meet him if he was all that truly horrible. It wasn't as if she really needed him at this point in her life anyway. For the past five years, Red had been her real father. Arkessa was wondering when he would propose to her mother so it could be official. It had already been five years.
Gradually, her attention shifted back to her entertainment, and she lost track of time as she immersed herself in it. With the afternoon fading into evening, the room gradually grew darker.
She was overcome with a sense of unease, enough to prompt her to rise from the plush comfort of the sofa. Where could her mother be? Her question lingered in the air for only a brief moment, as she ventured into the kitchen and laid eyes on a note attached to the fridge.
‘Be back tomorrow morning, birthday girl - at Red's and still planning!’
With a fleeting thought, she returned to the TV, her worries now forgotten. Immersed in the captivating world of cartoons, she continued her deep dive into the animated realm.
It was approaching midnight when her stomach growled violently, prompting her to sit up and sluggishly march to the kitchen. Her gaze skimmed the note once more as she opened the fridge. She felt a chill run up her spine as she quickly flicked on the lights to dispel the eerie feeling creeping over her. But no sooner did the lights come on than they shut off again. The light from the TV in the other room also went dark. She flicked the switch again, but no matter how many times she tried, the bulb remained dead.
The silence was unsettling, pressing in on her like a tangible force. It almost felt like the house was growing colder. Arkessa stood there, frozen, unsure what to do next. The obvious choice was to venture into the basement to reset the breaker.
As her eyes adjusted to the profound darkness, she took cautious steps to the basement door and opened it, peering down into the void below. It was just darkness; darkness couldn't hurt her. But what about the sound? Had a shelf fallen over? A box? This logic helped settle her anxiety.
Clinging to the railing for guidance, she navigated down the steps. Each one groaned in protest under her weight. Her hooves sounded sharp on the unfinished floors, and the cold from the concrete seemed to seep into her bones. Why was it so freezing down here? It was usually cool, but never this cold.
Trying to recall the general location of the breaker, she felt around the wall to keep a sense of direction in the darkness. It was just the dark; it couldn't hurt her, she repeated to herself, trying to keep from turning tail and sprinting back up the steps. No lights if she didn’t get this over with.
Arkessa paused when she touched the metal of the breaker box. It felt like trying to decipher Braille as she opened it and searched for the main switch.
"Have you been keeping me in your thoughts?"
Her skin and fur prickled, and her hairs stood on end as she heard the voice. It was impossibly deep yet simultaneously reminded her of a hoof scraping across a chalkboard, the way it grated and unsettled her. Arkessa whipped around, her eyes searching the different shades of darkness, until she locked her gaze on something across the room. Her muscles tensed, ready to carry her away from the red, luminescent eyes.
As a black tendril floated towards her, it moved weightlessly like a wisp of smoke. When it touched her shoulder, her entire body shuddered. It was freezing cold, its icy energy absorbing whatever warmth her body still held.
“Come of age already? How time flies... when you're out having fun.”
The voice followed by a terrifying laugh sent a wave of horror through her. It was unmistakable. The magic, the eyes, the chilling presence - it all came together in her mind.
It was her father.
Her eyes quickly darted back to the stairwell, her breath catching as she plotted her escape. She couldn't stay here. She had no idea what he was capable of.
"Look at me, you bastard child!" hissed the voice. A tendril snapped to grab hold of her jaw, forcing her gaze away from the stairs and back into the smoldering red eyes. They seemed to get closer, his silhouette creeping toward her in the darkness. Her body, coiled and tense, finally sprang into action, her heart hammering against her breastbone as she tore herself from his grip, feeling the inky magic slide off her coat unpleasantly. She raced up the steps, skipping two, then three at a time, with the sound of his thunderous footsteps right behind her.
Reaching the door, she screamed when she saw his face inches away from hers and slammed it shut. Thinking quickly, she rounded the corner as she heard him let out an unearthly roar, the door splintering. Arkessa was about to reach the threshold of the entryway when she felt a large coil of magic grasp around her torso, halting her momentum. With a grunt, she fell face-first onto the carpet and felt her teeth clamping together painfully.
His magic drew her backward, and she desperately struggled against the carpet and the sofa in an attempt to escape.
“This is disgusting, cowardly behavior. This was not the reception I expected. Now I see you are just a mere insect, crawling, slithering.” She couldn't bear to listen to his voice.
Closer and closer he pulled her as her grip slipped on the leg of the sofa. Her body went airborne until her face was inches from his. In the brighter room, she could see his face more clearly: it was jet black, and his mouth opened to reveal a set of horrifically sharp teeth that put hers to shame. His tongue snaked out of his terrible mouth, drawing across her neck and jaw, making her shudder against it as bile rose in her throat.
"But some insects can still be... Feasted upon." Her panicked gasps fell out of her mouth, tears blurring her eyes. Was she going to die now? She wasn't ready to die!
“If you make too much noise,” the monster began slowly after retracting his tongue, looking thoughtful. “I may have a problem. It really does grate against the ears.” The magic cord that held her snapped to the side, throwing her hard to the floor, knocking the air out of her lungs and leaving her dazed. However, she immediately began to crawl towards the front door.
Her journey was short-lived as a heavy hoof pressed down on her back, crushing her shoulder blades and squashing the breath out of her.
"Are you going somewhere? Come on, small one. Don't you want to get to know me?" His voice had a warm, twisted purr. His hoof lifted, allowing her to take a breath in, but then it tore out of her in a scream as he pulled her upward by her hair, her scalp erupting in searing pain. More tears blurred her vision, spilling freely down her face as the pain seemed never-ending. Her next sob was interrupted by a dark tendril slipping into her mouth, causing her to choke.
“Oh, do try and keep your volume down. It wasn't a difficult request.” She could barely hear his words as she struggled to gasp around his magic. “That aside, you're so deliciously enticing.” He was staring at her much too intently as he forced his magic farther down her throat. It was so painfully hard to breathe, and eventually, she wasn't able to draw breath at all. Then she gagged against him. A new magical tendril wound its way around her body, coiling around her neck. Panicking and seeing spots in her vision, she used the last of her breath to let out a muffled cry.
Was she going to die now?
Arkessa strained her eyes to look at his face. His red irises burned into hers like a ring of fire, and a smirk twisted his features. Just as her vision began to fade, her airways opened. Instinctively, her body gasped, and the fresh oxygen caused her head to spin.
The pressure on her scalp subsided, and her head and upper body fell onto the carpet with a soft thud. He was looming over her, his neck twisting down until she could feel the cold breath from his nostrils brushing against her ear. The magic that lingered around her neck tightened threateningly, restricting her breath again and drawing out an agitated cough that caused her throat to protest with pain.
"Now comes my favorite part." All she could do was gasp against the suffocating pressure on her neck as he flung her aside, landing awkwardly on the sofa, a leg dangling in the air like a limp puppet.
This was it, he was going to kill her now.
Arkessa screwed her eyes shut, praying silently in her head to whatever powers that may exist to be merciful to her when she died, but she didn't have much faith if this monster made up half of what she was.
Suddenly she felt something alien and repulsive between her legs. Her eyes jerked open, and her face grew hot with discomfort and shame. “Tsk tsk, so much protest. You're my offspring, I can do whatever I wish to you.” His voice dripped with malevolent intent, each cold word sending shivers down her spine. Rather than use his magic, he leaned over her body, a foreleg coming to wrap her hair around his hoof, pulling her head back. Struggling now caused her sore scalp immense pain, so she found herself stilling. The other leg settled beside her neck.
"Your mother was terrified of me as well. It seems you are all the same—cowardly." Arkessa took a shuddering breath. "It's such a shame she won't be joining in on the fun."
Arkessa pictured her mother, terrified and afraid just like she was, and suddenly a wave of despair came over her. What she was had become worse than what she knew. A product of an unholy union, against her mother's will. A product of fear and terror. The darkness closing in around her seemed to suffocate her, and the weight of her own existence crushed her.
As the shadows deepened, she felt his presence looming over her. His menacing jet-black form towered above her, his large, black cock hovering menacingly just outside her entrance. The monster's focus seemed to shift ever so slightly from causing her pain to his own lust, at least for now, the magic that had been clamping around her neck relaxing, and finally dissolving into the air. The pressure was gone, but the soreness lingered. It wasn't long before her body seemed to act against her will, small strands of pleasure from his act finding their way past the misery. The pain grew when he removed them with an audible wet popping sound, and she cried and sobbed into the upholstery, which only added to her suffering. Her throat was raw, each cry only serving to agitate the flesh further. But she couldn't help it, the pain was too much. Her own blood dripped from above, his draped form breathing heavily. Her head was ripped from its position burrowed into the sofa cushion when he forcefully jerked her body, flipping her over before penetrating her again. Her body ached and throbbed, but it was her shoulder that hurt the most. Arkessa wondered numbly if it was still bleeding as the demon above her seemed to only rut her faster.
Every thrust seemed to grow harder, more intense, which only served to cause her more pain. Then, something happened. He seemed to grow in size within her, pushing himself deep inside her before pausing.
Was it over?
Her father raised his head and growled. Arkessa could feel the liquid that began to fill her, stretching her and pushing against her insides until her stomach bulged out unnaturally. Desperately, she hoped her mother wouldn't be too angry about ruining the couch.
Wounds would get infected if she didn't clean them. She should clean her wounds. With quivering, unsteady steps she marched to the bathroom, opening the medicine cabinet and blindly knocking things over in the darkness. There was still no light.
Eventually, she found the little first aid kit. Once she located the hydrogen peroxide, she opened it, the lid falling and clattering somewhere on the bathroom floor. She did a clumsy job of dumping the liquid over her wound, hearing it hiss and bubble violently and gasping at the new shockwaves of pain it sent through her body. She swallowed against a lump in her throat as she bandaged the wound, trying to not feel distracted. Once she was finished, her body collapsed onto the floor, her chest heaving with silent, broken sobs, and her tears falling onto the tiles.
Eventually, exhaustion began to take its toll. Her sobs grew quieter, her tears fewer. Her body ached from the assault and the effort of holding herself together. As she drew her legs closer to her body, she squeezed her thighs shut, trying to find some semblance of comfort. The bathroom floor was hard and unforgiving, but she had no energy to move.
With her head resting on her foreleg, she let out a final, shuddering breath. Her eyelids grew heavier, each blink longer than the last. The overwhelming fatigue started to dull the sharp edges of her pain and fear.
In the quiet and the darkness, with her body curled in on itself and her wounds barely tended, Arkessa fell into a fitful sleep. Her dreams were haunted by shadows, but for a few precious hours, her mind and body found a temporary escape from the nightmare life had become.
As she slept, the house remained eerily silent, the darkness holding its breath, waiting.
