Trixie woke up feeling unusually energized. Usually she would be very reluctant to get out of bed until late morning, or even later on some days, but not today. Why you ask? Because she had decided that this would be the day she'd learn how to teleport herself!
Trixie had technically performed a teleportation spell before, but it did not go so well. And even then she did not teleport herself, just a large table. But she was determined to learn how to today.
And even better, since she was currently in ponyville, she had access to who she believed to be the perfect teacher: her friend Starlight Glimmer.
Trixie quickly put on her hat and cape and went on her way to Twilight's castle. She nearly ran the whole way there, being very excited to begin learning this spell.
Trixie, despite being a magician, was always bothered by the fact that she knew very little actually magic spells, but she was determined to change that today.
She arrived and knocked loudly, eagerly awaiting entry. The door opened and she was greeted, not by Starlight, but by the owner of the building, Twilight Sparkle.
"Oh hello Trixie. I didn't know you were in Ponyville. Are you here to see Starlight?"
Trixie, a tad out of breath, replied, "Indeed! The Great and Powerful Trixie requires to meet with her assistant!"
Twilight rolled her eyes a little and stepped aside to let Trixie in, "alright alright. Hey Starlight some pony is here to see you!"
Starlight entered in from the other room, "really? Who is i-"
She was quickly interrupted by Trixie running up, and nearly into her, "Starlight I need your help!" Twilight left the room leaving the two to speak.
Starlight held out her arm to get a bit of space between them "Woah there Trix slow down. You didn't do anything illegal did you?"
Trixie scoffed, "No I did not do anything illegal . I just need you to help me with something!"
Starlight responded, "alright alright, what is it?"
Trixie calmed herself and began to explain "Ok, so, your pretty great with magic right?"
"I guess so,"
"And you can teleport right?"
"Yeah?"
"Soooo I was thinking maybe you could show me how to do that!"
Starlight paused for a moment "uhhh I dunno Trixie... Last time you tried teleporting you kinda caused more than a few problems"
Trixie was about to argue back but couldn't really think of a solid defense "Ok maybe I did... But that was a long time ago! I'll totally be a better listener this time! Please teach me!"
Starlight scratched the back of her head "Trixie that was like a week ago, I dunno..."
Trixie put her front hooves together "pleeeaase?"
Starlight considered it, "well..."
Trixie leaned forward and spoke in a slightly higher tone, "pleeeeeeeaaaaaase?"
Starlight groaned, "Ugh fine! Just quit doing that,"
Trixie smiled and stood up excitedly, "Thank you so much!" Trixie followed Starlight to a different room of the castle, a large open room with plenty of space, perfect for practicing teleportation.
Starlight sat down and faced Trixie, "Alright first things first, what is the most important part of a teleportation spell?"
Trixie answered quickly, "Having a horn to do the spell with!"
Starlight opened her mouth to correct Trixie but paused for a few seconds, before answering, "Actually... Yes I suppose you're technically not wrong..." Trixie smiled widely in response, before Starlight continued, "So after making sure that you do in fact have a horn, the most important part is to-"
Trixie interrupted, "focusing on where you wanna go?"
Starlight smiled a little, "Ah not quite. When teleporting an object the most important part is focusing on the destination, but when teleporting yourself it's a little different. You have to be focused on your own body primarily instead. If you're not you risk injuring yourself,"
Trixie was surprisingly listening rather closely, "Ohhhh, is that why ponies sometimes light their mane on fire when they teleport?"
Starlight smiled, "Exactly"
Trixie smiles wildly, happy to have gotten something right
Starlight continued, "Next up is, as you said, focusing on where, you wanna go. For example; let's say you wanna teleport from the edge of the Everfree Forest to Ponyville, you can't just think 'ponyville' and get exactly where you wanna go, you have to Invision the exact location, otherwise you could end up quite a bit away from where you actually wanted to go,"
Trixie paused for a good forty-five seconds before speaking again, "is it possible to teleport inside of a wall?"
Starlight was a bit surprised by this question and she took a moment to reply, "Uh- I... Actually don't know, I've never tried," she scratched her head in thought, "let's not test it out,"
Trixie, who had sort of wanted to test it out, sighed, "alright... So what's next?"
Starlight smiled, "Well after that you just have to use your magic like you normally would, surround yourself with your magical energy and go for it,"
Trixie tilted her head a little, "if it's as simple as it sounds how come most ponies can't do it?"
Starlight thought for a moment, "I suppose using magic on yourself is harder than using it on other objects, think about how I'm one of the only unicorns who levitates themselves even though most unicorns can levitate other objects,"
Trixie nodded, "ohhhh, I never really thought about it like that. So can I try it now?" Trixie asked excitedly
Starlight smiled and walked to the other end of the room, "Sure. I'll stand here and you try and teleport to me,"
Trixie nodded, "Can do!" Trixie closed her eyes and focused, concentrate on your body, she thought to herself, Invision where you wanna go, Trixie then attempted to activate the spell and teleport directly to Starlight.
Key word; attempted. All she actually ended up doing was shooting a painful bolt of magic through her own body, "Ow! What was that about?!"
Starlight tilted her head a little, "Hmm, no worries, nopony gets it on their first try, this time try to really feel out moving to your desired location,"
Trixie scratched her head, "feel out? What does that even mean?"
Starlight thought for a moment, "uhh it's kinda hard to explain... I guess try to feel like you're actually moving instead of just disappearing and reappearing,"
try to feel? What in the world is that supposed to mean Trixie thought to herself as she prepared to try again, "Sure thing... Focus on my body and-" once again Trixie zapped herself painfully "Ow! Oh c'mon!"
Starlight frowned a little, "Don't get frustrated. Third times the charm?"
...
The third time was in fact, not the charm. Neither was the fourth, five, sixth, or any of Trixie's many other attempts.
"Uhh maybe we should take a break Trix, that looks like it hurts,"
Trixie panted, "No! I can do it! I have to learn how to teleport! No matter how long it takes,"
Starlight walked over to Trixie, "But why? Why is this so important to you? It's just a spell,"
Trixie turned her head away from Starlight very slightly, "Easy for you to say, you can do any spell you want no problem. You're like the greatest and most powerful unicorn in all of Equestria, but me? All I can do is some illusions and card tricks... I don't have any real magic," Trixie said with a hint of bitterness.
Starlight sighed, she was beginning to understand what this was all about, "So what? It doesn't matter that you can't do all the best spells quite yet," Starlight placed her hoof on Trixie's back, lightly patting it, "you're great and powerful in your own way,"
Trixie moved away from Starlight, "Yeah right,"
Starlight frowned, "I'm serious! C'mon Trixie I don't like seeing you get this worked up, you wanna talk about this?"
Trixie paused before letting out a sigh and sitting down, "It's just that you, Twilight, Sunburst... you're all either super powerful, or magic geniuses, and then I, who is supposed to be a magician , am just kinda... Below average"
Starlight went closer to Trixie, "Well I don't think you're below average. I mean... I could never be as good of a preformer as you are, and I mean it's really cool how you make your own smoke bombs,"
Trixie scoffed a bit, "what's preforming compared to actual power?"
Starlight walked over and sat in front of Trixie, "You know just because I have power
doesn't make me worth anymore than you, or anypony really. I think you're magic shows are incredible, and I'm not the only one. Sunburst loves them too. Also -" Starlight looked side to side as if making sure they were alone, before leaning in and whispering to Trixie, "- Don't let her know I told you this, but I overheard Twilight talking to Spike, and she said that your stage magic was, and I quote, 'actually pretty impressive'"
Trixie gasped and put a hoof up to her mouth, "she did not,"
Starlight smiled, "Oh I assure you, she did," Starlight said before booping Trixie.
Trixie giggled a bit, "Thanks Starlight... Alright I'll stop hurting myself trying to teleport now,"
Starlight smiled and hugged her friend, "thank you. And don't worry, I'll totally teach you about all the best spells soon enough, I bet Sunburst could help too"
Trixie smiled and hugged back, letting her frustration out had certainly been a help wow... I feel a lot more relaxed and focused now
*Poof*
Starlight jolted and looked around the room, taking a moment to think, "Uhh... weren't we just... over there?"
Trixie was in shock for a moment, "I.. did it?" I very brief moment before she began hopping around the room, exploding with excitement, "I did it, I did it, I did it, I did it!"
Starlight giggled, "Yes Trixie, you did it, now please quiet down,"
Trixie calmed herself very slightly, "The great and powerful Trixie is now a great and powerful teleporter! I wanna do it again!"
Starlight stopped smiling, "Uhh Trixie wait! Remember to focu-"
*Poof*
Starlight looked around wondering where Trixie had gone
"Uhh Starlight?" Trixie's voice came from the hallway, "Turns out you can teleport into a wall,"
