“Ugghhh...” Spike groaned with both exhaustion and relief as he finally reached the front steps of his house. A nagging little voice in the back of his mind reminded him yet again that he could have gotten home much earlier if he had just flown there instead of taking the train, and on any other day he would have gladly listened to that little voice. The sun was already setting by the time he had boarded the train home, which meant the moon was now fully illuminated in the night sky by the time he had practically dragged himself the way from the station up to his front step. Still, the work week was not official over, which meant he had the weekend to recuperate in the company of his loving wife, Gabby. With the promise of a comfy bed now within his reach, Spike sluggishly unlocked the front door with his key and stepped inside.
“Gabby?” he called out as he closed and locked the door behind him. “I'm home!”
No response. The outside lights had been on, which usually meant that someone was home, and yet Gabby hadn't come to greet him at the door like she usually did. Had he gotten home so late that she had already gone to bed without him?
Kicking his shoes off, Spike began to walk further into the house, undoing his work shirt and tossing it onto the floor. “Gabby? You he-” Spike stopped as something crunched under his foot. Now even more curious, Spike continued to follow the trail of petals through the house, him mind already running through scenarios of just what Gabby could possibly have in store for him.
