My Roommate is a Vampire: Echoes of the Past
My Roommate is a Vampire: Echoes of the Past.
Chapter one: Happy Birthday
Twenty years later...
KILLINGS CONTINUE, CULPRIT STILL UNKNOWN.
I stared at the headline of the Equestria Daily Newspaper through my dark aviators, as I sipped on my coffee. I sat in the middle of the cafe, as high class Canterlot ponies talked about celebrity gossip around me. Luckily for me, I knew how to not attract attention to myself, otherwise I would already be swarmed by "fans of my work". The truth was, they didn't care about me, they only cared about my art.
"Is that her?" I heard a couple of nearby ponies murmur.
Oh crap.
I tried to surreptitiously make my was out of the cafe, but I was granted no such luck. The murmur turned to a roar, as within moments I was surrounded by my "gracious" fans.
Questions and request rained down upon me, pictures waiting to be signed jabbed at my wide-eyed face, as camera flashes assailed my eyes.
I saw an opening and leapt for it, then began running as fast as I could. The crowd chased closely behind. I could stay ahead of my pursuers on my tail easy enough. There was a problem though; it seemed every corner I turned, I was greeted by more ponies, autographs, and flashes of cameras.
I just kept running, adrenaline pumping through my veins, as I frantically put together an escape plan in my mind. Then I got an idea. I sprinted full speed ahead and sharply turned into an alleyway. As soon as I did, I hid inside a dumpster. I waited for a minute, as I heard the sounds of the crowd draw closer.
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
"She couldn't have just disappeared."
I held my breath and did my best to match the meaning of the phrase, "silent as the grave".
There were more murmurs and, to my relief, the sounds of the crowd began to grow more distant. But now I had a new problem; the smell. It was terrible; and has no doubt, rubbed off on me.
I peeked out from the dumpster. To find that the alleyway was empty.
I hopped out of my hideaway and sprinted home as fast as my legs could carry.
I opened the door and slammed it shut behind me, breathing heavily as I did.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARMONY!"
I jumped in surprise, nearly tearing the door off it's hinges, as my living room lit up to reveal several ponies wearing party hats.
My heart's pounding slowly resided, as I took in the scene before me.
The living room had completely changed, streamers hung from various furniture items, balloons joyfully bounced around against the binds holding them to their positions. The couch was pushed to the wall, to allow room for the snack table. The only thing untouched, was my beloved art kit, sitting neatly in the corner of the room, next to the sound system.
Everypony I knew was there, all my friends, family, even Princess Luna was there, to my pleasant surprise. That is, except for a certain mare I knew. But that was apart of my plan, I knew she wouldn't show up right away.
Then a thought occurred to me.
That's right. I was so concentrated on the planning that I had almost forgotten. Today is my birthday...
That' s so AWESOME! Two birds in one stone!
A huge grin busted out on my face, as I yelled out, and pumped a hoof, "Yeah! Lets party!!" Loud party music began to play. It was my birthday, and the celebration had begun.
One week earlier...
"Hellloo Harmony! Happy early birthday!" A particular pink earth pony mare, who trotted out of the bakery's kitchen in a carefree way, that always managed to make a smile creep onto my face.
She was the towns go-to mare for anything having to do with a celebration. She was, and is, also the strangest pony I know. For example, she seems to know everything, yet nothing, at the exact same time. Not only that, she has a habit of popping up straight out of nowhere.
Which isn't a very good idea around me; I almost tore her head off the first time she did that to me.
But I wasn't seeing her to receive birthday wishes, I had a more important objective in mind.
"Thanks Pinks, I need a favor." I told the hyper active mare. I didn't smile though, mostly due to how much it meant to me that this gets completed.
"Sure thing Harmony, what is it?" She replied in a joyful tone, the pink pony seemed to not pick up the seriousness I was radiating. But I knew she did.
Nothing gets past her.
I took a deep breath and told her, "I need your help, to save my parents."
Present.
The music drummed through my eardrums. It was a mix my parents made before things went south. I had taken my shower shortly after I got home, and my mane still felt a bit damp.
The room was full of parting ponies, however all I needed was one. A particular grey one, whose taste is a little more refined than the current music selection being used.
You know, I sometimes wonder if ponies go to others birthday parties for their own enjoyment more than the company of the hosting mare.
I scanned the room, and found the musician sitting at the end table I usually use for...
Actually, what DO I use it for? I honestly don't remember. Whatever, it'll come back to me.
As I approached the mare, my keen vision helped me confirm, that she was in fact the one I was looking for.
She sniffed the air, then turned to me with a smile, as I reached her.
"Hello Harmony."
Damn. I was hoping the amount of ponies would mask my scent. Of course it didn't work, that mare could smell me a mile away. If she could smell me, then that means the earth pony knew that she, is here.
I can only hope this still works.
"Hey mom," I replied.
I was never a good liar. Not only that, my mother was an expert at finding the truth. So it was a miracle that she hadn't uncovered my plan by now.
But she suspected something. And I could only hold out for so long.
"So what have you been up to mom?" I asked, as an attempt to avoid the inevitable topic. It seemed every conversation we had always somehow shifted to her. It never failed.
"Oh, the usual, we are having a concert tomorrow." She was thinking of her again. I could see it in her cyan eyes. She had a certain color her eyes turn whenever she thinks of the mare. It is like a darker, sadder, blue.
"That's nice..." I replied, my voice trailing off.
For a moment there was only the beat of the music. We just sat there. It's amazing how fast a conversation can turn for the worse.
"Well, you guys seem to be having the time of your lives."
I froze. That voice. It was THAT voice. The one that sang me to sleep when I couldn't do it myself. The one that told me bedtime stories. The one who helped show me the importance of music and creativity. The one that helped me get my cutie mark. IT WAS THAT VOICE. I had planned this myself, but I still wasn't entirely ready for this meeting.
Octavia stared at the source, with several conflicting emotions on her face, the most prevalent being surprise.
I slowly turned towards her, wide-eyed, and there she was.
Vinyl Scratch. The mare who helped my mother give birth to me, to raise, and teach me.
Not to mention my mom's ex-wife.
