Melon Twilight
Chapter 1: The Accident
It was a normal, sunny day in Ponyville. Foals, having just been released from school, ran along the road, and played in the park beside the school. The older residents of the quiet town walked together chatting or alone running errands, saddlebags full of different assortments of groceries. Some trotted along with a certain speed in their step, obviously having somewhere to be with only a limited time to get there, but not wanting others to know of their tardiness. The birds were chipping happily in the trees, enjoying the lovely day just as much as, if not more than, the colourful ponies that they shared their habitat with. Anyone you asked would in fact agree that this day, was in fact, perfect.
Despite the lovely weather and overall cheeriness of the outside world, Twilight Sparkle had chosen to stay inside all day, which she did more often than most ponies would find healthy. Rarity herself would often complain to Twilight how bad it was for her hair, or her skin, only trying to help a friend of course, and although Twilight usually chose to take her advice, she still chose to stick with her studies. Today, Twilight was trying to perfect her latest discovery in the form of a spell she had found in an old magic book. She had been concentrating all day, but had yet to get the hang of it, which was a rare occasion for a unicorn of her level in magic, being a student of Celestia herself.
With each failure of the casting came more and more aggravation on Twilight's part, given at how naturally this kind of thing should come to her, her cutie does represent her special talent for magic after all. She was sure this kind of thing never happened to Fluttershy when she was taking care of hurt or scared creatures, to Rarity when she was creating her latest fashion line, to Applejack when she worked on the farm or baked her famous pies, to Rainbow Dash when she was perfecting a new trick, or even to Pinkie Pie when she wanted to make someone smile. Although she knew that they all had their moments when they couldn't work something out, they all eventually succeeded after just a moment of thought. Realizing with shame her jealousy towards her friends, Twilight turned her attention back to the book in front of her.
The spell seemed simple enough, it's purpose was to transform the pony casting it into whatever they desired. Twilight hoped she would be able to use it to turn herself into a Pegasus pony for a day in order to attend a Wonderbolts show with Rainbow Dash the following day, another oddity for Twilight, but Dash had insisted Twilight should come in order to return Twilight's favour of getting her an early copy of the latest Daring Do adventure, having high connections in Canterlot. After discovering the spell to walk on clouds could only be used once per pony, Twilight managed to find this transformation spell. However, as hard as she tried, it refused to work for her.
Twilight eventually became fed up, and in a blaze of anger, used her magic to throw the book across the room with an exasperated grunt. The book connected with the wall with a dull thump, landing with the page of the particular spell open, as if it were mocking her on her inability to cast such simple magic. Twilight glared back at the pages, still fuming, but feeling better having expressed the fury she had kept bottled up all afternoon. Eventually, she was able to calm herself down, and convince herself she would get the hang of it in the end, because that's just what she does.
Feeling guilty about throwing the book, and of not being able to control herself, Twilight reluctantly trotted towards the book to put it back on the shelf. Just as she was about to pick it up though, her eye caught a small bit of writing in the corner of the page she had not noticed before. As she levitated it towards herself, she realized the words were only visible from that specific angle. The small, handwritten note was the last part on the spell she needed.
No wonder I couldn't get the hang of it, she thought taking a closer look at the strange paragraph, I was missing an entire portion of the spell the entire time. I wonder why it was hidden like this.
Too excited that she may finally be able to cast the spell, Twilight didn't bother to look any further into the mysterious circumstances, promising to look deeper into it after she perfected her day's work. She got ready to try the magic one last time. Positioning herself in front of the mirror she brought down from her room, she concentrated on the mental image of herself with Pegasus wings. Closing her eyes, she pointed her head towards the mirror, and her horn began to glow.
Suddenly, Spike burst through the door, having just arrived home from a trip to Ponyville's market. Interrupted by the perfect, warm day, he had ended up falling asleep in the shade of a tree at the park. In one hand he held a small bag of now slightly warm fruits, vegetables, and bread, and under his opposite arm was a large watermelon. He was about to greet his purple friend and apologize for his lateness, when he tripped over a loose book that sat on the floor, catapulting the watermelon into the air and towards Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight had just began to cast the spell when she was struck in the head with the giant, green fruit, shocking her back into reality and disrupting the spell. The magic shot out of her horn, bouncing off the mirror and back at her. With a SNAP, hit her like a lightning strike, knocking her onto the floor. The last thing she remembered of the incident when hitting the floor, and watching the hard, round oval as it rolled away from the scene, knocking against a leg of the nearby table. She could barely hear Spike as he ran up to her, calling her name.
And then everything went black.
