Chapters Happy Anniversary!...Or Not
Cha-Ching CLUNK !
The sounds of the cash register made when 25 year old Amethyst Bloom rang up a customer’s purchase.
“And here’s your change, have a nice day.” Amethyst chimes as she hands the customer their change before watching them trot away with their items and closes the register.
Though she usually works in stocking in the back, the silvered haired earth pony was asked by one of the assistant managers to work the register while they handle a few other things. She didn’t mind the chance to interact with the customers.
“Phew! You do not wanna go back there.” her assistant manager Dahlia chimes as the yellow pony walks back behind the register. "It's like a skunk dropping a major stink bomb in there."
“That’s a little too much info, Dal,” Amethyst said with a chuckle. “But that’s good to know.” she said, wiping her hand on her black uniform pants. Her off white coat stood out with the dark colors, her nails having a splash of icy blue, her favorite color.
“Thanks for watching the front, after you check the next one out, you can head on back to your post.” Dahlia said as she grabbed her water bottle off the filing cabinet and took a big drink of whatever was inside.
Amethyst nodded before she turned, seeing that a mother was holding her young foal in her arms, a basket on the counter that was filled with food and baby necessities.
“Sorry just a moment.” The mother said as she juggled taking stuff out of the basket and put it on the counter with one hand while holding up her child with the other.
“Here, let me.” Amethyst quickly said, taking the basket from the pony and began unloading them on the counter in a way she can scan easily. As she worked, she couldn’t help but glance up and look at the foal.
He was a tiny unicorn with a light purple coat and messy red mane and yellow eyes. He wore suspenders and a tiny bow tie and looked extremely cute.
She couldn’t help but feel her heart swell. “Your son is very adorable.” Amethyst complimented, looking at his mother as she scanned her objects.
The mother chuckled. “Thank you, he’s pretty much a handful.”
“I think that’s normal for all children.” Amethyst said before hearing the colt making some fussy noises. She looked up at him and made a silly face.
The colt found the face amusing and giggled before wrapping his arms around her neck.
“Do you have any children?” the mother asks Amethyst.
The earth pony fidgets the wedding and engagement rings on her left ring finger, giving the woman a sad smile. “Sadly not yet. My husband and I have been trying for two years.”
“And no luck?”
Amethyst shook her head. “Pretty much tried everything in the book. I got checked out thinking something was wrong with me personally, but the doctor said I’m able to have one.”
The mother gave her a sympathetic look. “Oh don’t fret, I’m sure you’ll get one soon. These things take time and the right moment. How active are you?”
Amethyst blushes pure red, “Uh uh…” she said before quickly finishing up the purchase. “Okay, that will be 26 bits, will that be all?” she asked, trying to dodge this rather personal question.
“Oh yes.” the mother said, digging into her pockets as her son tugged on her ears before putting the bits on the counter.
The mother was freaking out, trying to get her son to stop using his magic, but nope, the little one was playing with every candy item.
Amethyst watches in horror as she watches the candy fly before the majority of them suddenly drops to the ground, the little colt holding the candy of his choice.
And he looked so proud at the mess he made.
The mother looked mortified. “Oh I am so sorry about that!” she said, looking down at the mess now Amethyst has to clean up. She chuckles nervously, looking at her. “Children, they just do the darndest things.”
“Yes, yes they do.” Amethyst said, appearing calm but internally, she was not happy, she had JUST stocked the candy before being asked to work behind the register.
“Still want one?”
“Yes, here’s your change.” Amethyst briskly replied, handing her change.
“Oh wait,” The mother said, taking the candy out of her son’s hands and putting it on the counter. “This too.”
Biting her tongue, Amethyst scans the candy, the mother pays for it and the two left.
Her pierced ears flickered towards her assistant manager who was trying to control her laugh after witnessing the whole ordeal, her heterochromia blue and green eyes squinted at the AM’s general direction.
“Ah kids,” she giggled.
After cleaning up that mess, Amethyst was back to stocking. She was in the canned good sections on a rickety ladder, getting into a groove of sorts. Trying to get her mind off of what she had just done.
As Amethyst continues to stock, something collides into the ladder, it snaps and she starts to fall.
“Whoa, whoa!” Amethyst cried out, trying to stop herself by grabbing the shelf but was unable to save herself and she fell. The cans she had in her hands went flying. After getting pinged and hit multiple times with the cans and the ladder landed next to her, everything was eerie quiet.
The earth pony sat up, clutching her head. “Okay…that hurt.” she groaned then noticed that she had landed on something that somewhat cushioned her fall.
“You said it.” a stallion’s voice said with a groan.
Amethyst freezes when she hears another voice. Her eyes follow to the source of that stallion’s voice… and low and behold, her landing cushion was a rather built pegasus!
His coat was a warm orange color with dark brown mane that was up in a small ponytail and had a short tail and orange eyes. He had three claw-like scars near his right eye, he wore a brown t-shirt with black pants.
His shopping cart had rolled off towards the snacks aisle and stopped midway, along with many cans scattered all in the ground.
Amethyst’s white cheeks blushed cherry red. “Oh my sweet Celestia I’m so sorry!” she said panicking, ignoring the stinging pain from the cans and the fall, she scrambled to stand. "Are you alright? I'm so, so, so sorry." She said repeatedly as she tried to help him.
“Yeah I’m fine, are you ma’am?” He asked her as he stood. “Sorry, I was looking at my phone and didn’t see you there.”
Though Amethyst felt like she was going to be needing an ice bath when she got home and was sore from cans and the fall, she was more worried about the customer and the mess.
Before she could respond, another voice stepped in.
“What in the world?!” Amethyst turns and sees not only Dahlia, but also their store manager Trick Trap comes rushing in the scene.
The look on the store manager’s face made Amethyst's ears droop.
Oh boy.
Happy Anniversary!...Or Not
Amethyst was face first onto her sofa back home. After an earful from her boss, she was ultimately fired. What was worse was that it was right in front of a customer!
She let the events stew inside her for a moment before grabbing a throw pillow and burying her muzzle into it and letting out a frustrated scream. “This fucking sucks!”
Though it’s just a retail store, it still hurts the fact you spent six years faithfully working there only to be fired.
Amethyst sat up, still clenching to the throw pillow, crossing her legs together. She reached into her pants pocket and pulled out her phone. Sighing softly, knowingly that she’ll have to break the news to her husband.
She calls him up - it was normal for her to call her husband once between breaks. Just the usual checking in on him, asking how his day was going so far.
After a few rings it went to voicemail. “You have reached Duke Whistle from Dodge City Advertise Rally, please leave your name and number after the beep.”
After the beep, Amethyst hung up. “He’s probably busy, being an editor does take a lot of time… maybe when he gets home?” She muttered, twisting her rings on her finger.
She sat in silence for a moment before dialing him again. This time after two rings, he picked up.
“Hah-hey Ames.” Duke greeted by using her pet name, sounding very breathy like he was losing his breath. “Sorry I didn’t realize you called the first time, what’s up?”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you, just checking to say how’s it going.” Amethyst responded with a soft smile. “You okay? You sounded like you just ran a marathon.”
“I was using the company treadmill, just completed a marathon-like run on it. ” He said, followed by some scuffling creaking noises from his side of the call before it stopped. “Nothing much new, what’s up with you? ”
Amethyst sighed and then just told him. “I should’ve waited until you got back home, but I just want to let you know what happened.”
“Damn, sorry honey, are you okay? Are you hurt or anything ?”
“Got some bruises already showing up but other than that I’m fine. I offered to pay for the damages but the boss was not having it.”
“That asshole should’ve watched where he’s going. ” Duke grunted.
“Is everything okay ?” a mare’s voice came up from the other side.
One of Amethyst’s brows arched upward when she heard this unfamiliar voice. “Who was that?” Amethyst asked her husband.
“That would be my assistant Shooting Star. " Duke quickly responded. "The new one that was hired a month ago, remember?"
Amethyst thought for a moment, trying to recall him getting a new assistant. His usual assistant was an old mare named Floral Rain, she always sends her husband home with cookies for the two to munch on. "Right, right I forgot, she retired. Sorry.”
She sighed deeply, sinking deeply into the couch. “God this day just sucked.” She groaned. “When are you coming home?” she asked him.
“Hopefully around six. The boss dumped an eighty page advertisement of a carnival, painfully detailing each performer and why anypony should come and see them.”
“Eighty pages?” Amethyst gawked.“Who submitted that? Princess Twilight and Pinkie Pie?”
She heard the assistant giggling at that.
“Okay honey, I gotta get back to work, I’ll see you at home.” Duke said.
“See you soon, love you.” Amethyst said. And he clicked off before responding.
She lowered the phone back on her lap, but her ears were dropping down and still clutching the pillow to her chest.
With a soft sigh, she set the pillow to the side and stood up. “Can’t just sit around and mope. Gotta do something.” she muttered.
She went up the stairs to the second level where the bedrooms and bathroom were. The boards creaked with each step her hooves made, she walked past what was supposed to be a nursery but it wasn’t finished due to the fact she was unable to have a foal. She went into the master bedroom and changed out of her work clothes, changing into a simple t-shirt and leggings before heading back down to the living room.
So Amethyst then spent an hour straightening up the couple’s home, some light dusting, vacuuming the rugs and carpet, making sure things look nice for when her husband gets home.
As she dusted the fireplace mantle, she saw the wedding photo there. She quickly dusted the glass before picking it up and looking at it.
A light smile came to her face when she stared at her and her husband. Married just a week after she turned twenty, to save money they had a small wedding with just their parents and Mare of honor and Best Colt. She wore a simple white dress while he wore a suit he borrowed from one of his entourage. Duke was a light gray earth pony with pale green streak on his muzzle and his mane was two tone green with green eyes. He was as attractive as Amethyst was beautiful on her wedding day.
It was a good day.
And now she thinks about it, their fifth anniversary was tomorrow. And tomorrow was a Saturday so her husband would be home too.
“Since today was totally crap, tomorrow especially should be a good one, right?” Amethyst asked no one in particular as she set the picture back up on the mantle. She twists the rings on her finger before she proceeds to finish cleaning up.
She then heads into their kitchen and starts making dinner, keeping track of the time, trying to time it just right so when Duke comes home, he’ll appreciate some hot food waiting for him.
So Amethyst makes cheesy enchiladas with beans and rice, spending a moment making them up before putting them in the oven.
As soon as she put dinner in the oven, her phone rang. She picks the phone up from the countertop. She sees her husband’s name on the caller ID and answers. “Hi honey, I just put dinner in the oven, should be all ready for you when you get home.” She said.
“Hi, yeah I’m sorry hon, but I have to work late. This carnival advertisement has so many errors and trying to figure out how to even shorten the damn thing is taking longer than I thought.” Duke responded.
Amethyst’s ears drooped and she frowned. “Oh?”
“Yeah I’m sorry, I’ll be home as soon as I can. What did you make?”
“Enchiladas.” Amethyst said softly. “Duke, it seems you’ve been working more overtime lately. I do understand editing takes time, but it would be nice to eat dinner with you and not be alone.”
“I know hon, but all this overtime is going to pay off, I promise. Just put my plate in the fridge and I’ll eat it when I get home. I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
“If you say so.” She muttered. Before she could say something else, he hung up on her again.
She placed the phone down and proceeded to twist her rings again. Though they’ve been trying to have a foal for two years, it has been six months since her and Duke had time for each other.
Six months since the last time he actually touched her intimately. Six months of him working overtime kinda prevented that. She wanted to say that he’s dedicated to his job and since it does pay well.
But it would be nice to have some time together with him.
Maybe tomorrow could be their time together?
Morning came and when Amethyst got up, she saw her darling husband sleeping deeply next to her with his back turned to her. Probably snuck into bed after she went to bed.
Amethyst crawled out of bed as quietly as she could without disturbing him. She uses the bathroom, washes up before going downstairs. She starts a pot of coffee before heading outside for a moment. Walking over to the mailbox and checked to see what was in the mail.
She pulled the lid down and saw a stack of envelopes resting inside. She took them out, closed the lid and headed inside. As she walked she went through the mail to see what was what.
“Bills, bills, a copy of Clovenhut, junk, junk and more junk.” Amethyst said as she went through the mail.
When she got to the final letter as she got to the door she stopped. “Huh?”
It was from some traveling agency that was addressed to their address, didn’t say it was for her nor her husband.
She opened the door and went inside, then closed the door and walked back to the kitchen. Amethyst sets the rest of the mail on the counter and proceeds to open the one from the agency. Carefully ripping one end of the envelope and pulling out the letter.
She then unfolds the letter and begins reading it.
Dear Duke Whistle,
We in The Happy Happy Fun Time Travel Agency, would like to say that your application for a three week getaway to Las Pegasus has been accepted!
After spending many adventures with us at The Happy Happy Fun Time Travel Agency, you have earned travel points to book at the lavish Ravishing Sun Hotel with all your personal touches waiting with absolutely no charge whatsoever!
If you have any questions, please call our help center and have an excellent adventure!
Carefully stapled at the bottom were not only two tickets to have a hot air balloon ride up to the floating party city but information needed to be checked intothe hotel and the dates to go. They had to leave tomorrow at the earliest.
Amethyst let out a loud gasp. “Las Pegasus?” Her heart fluttered and soared.
Was this when he said he’ll make it up to her? She knew he occasionally had to work out of town, but she didn’t realize he traveled enough to have them go on vacation!
And what made it better was finding out on her anniversary! “Oh Duke, I can’t believe this!” She squealed in delight, hugging the letter to her chest.
She then quickly got to work on making their anniversary breakfast. Already, she knew that this was going to be a great day.
Or so she thought.
Happy Anniversary!...Or Not
The whole kitchen started to smell like hash browns and hay bacon, eggs were sizzling and the coffee percolating and soon to be ready to consume. Music was playing from Amethyst’s phone, a rather energetic tune that matched the feeling she was feeling.
She created their plates just as Duke came downstairs, wearing his robe and pjs shuffling down the stairs.
He stops when he sees his wife sway and dance, her long bushy tail happily swishing.
“Morning,” Duke greeted, watching Amethyst dancing.
"Oh, morning, Duke." Amethyst responded as she placed their plates on the table before going over to her husband and wrapped her arms around him and kissed him. "Happy Anniversary, honey."
Duke tensed up when she said that. He wraps his arms around her waist. "O-oh?" He says with hesitation in his tone. "That's today?"
Amethyst giggled, thinking he's just playing. "Why yes, you silly goose." She said, looking up at him. "Breakfast is ready," She lets go of him before going to her seat and sat down.
Duke watches her go before looking at the food she made for them. He tugged at the collar line of his robe before joining her. "Wow, Ames, this looks pretty good here," he said.
"Why thank you. " Amethyst responded, her hand reaching for her fork. "I got something for you, several something's," she said. "In comparison, it's nothing compared to your amazing gift."
Duke nearly choked on his food when she said that. "W-what gift?" He asked hesitantly.
"Oh okay now I know you're joking." She said, getting up from the table and grabbed the tickets off the counter and placed it on the table.
As soon as Duke saw those tickets to Las Pegasus, he started sweating bullets. "O-oh! That gift."
"A three week vacation to Las Pegasus, all expenses paid. Is this what you mean by making things up for me?" She asked with a teasing purr, reaching across the table and grabbing his hand.
Duke held hers, feeling his hand was some reason clammy. " You okay? You're kinda sweaty a little. "
"Heh, when around somepony as hot as you is in the room, sweat happens. And yes, this trip is definitely for us." Duke said nervously.
Amethyst snickered, " Oh I can think of a much better way to sweat." She responded with a flirty gesture. Just because she's married doesn't mean she stops being flirty to the colt she loved.
She stared at him for a moment then, reading into his body language. Before she was going to ask him why he looked so nervous, the two of them heard a phone go off.
Duke quickly let go of Amethyst's hand, dug into the pockets of his robe and pulled out his cell. "Oh hon, I gotta take this." He said, staring at his screen and getting up from his barely touched food and walked out of the room with the phone.
Amethyst watched him leave. What would be so important that he has to leave the room to talk to whoever's on the other end of the line? And on their anniversary too?
She was almost done with breakfast before she saw Duke coming in the kitchen. She turns to see him and immediately frowns.
He was in his work clothes.
"Duke, you can't be serious." Amethyst said, looking at him.
Duke sighed deeply. "Yeah, that was my boss, he wanted me to come in." He said, adjusting to his cufflinks. "He wants me to go up to the office and go over a few things."
"On a Saturday?" She arched one of her brows up. "Can't it wait?"
He shook his head. "You already lost your job, I gotta keep up mine." Her ears fell flat at that. "I'll only be gone for a couple of hours. We got three weeks to make up the time, remember?" He walked over to her, placed his hands on her shoulders and gave her a light massage before kissing the top of her head. "Just trust me, the second I'm home, I'm all yours."
Amethyst looked up to him with uncertainty. " Before you go, can I at least give you one of your anniversary gifts?"
" Sure, sweetheart. " He said before letting Amethyst scoot back from her seat and get up.
She went to the living room, walked over to a cushioned footstool, lifted the top up to reveal some storage inside the stool. She grabs a small colorful box from inside.
Amethyst closes the top before heading back to Duke. She hands him the box. "Happy Anniversary."
"Aw, thank you." Duke said before he tears open to reveal a leathered rectangle case. He flips the lid open and it was revealed to be a nice looking watch. The leather was black and the device itself was chrome with three different ways to tell time. Expensive looking too.
"Not bad for a retail salary, right?" She responded with a small chuckle.
"Ames, this looks amazing, I wanted one like this for ages!" Duke said enthusiastically, taking the watch out of the case and putting it on his wrist. "Perfect fit," he said, showing it off to her. " Thank you. okay I gotta go now." He gives her a quick kiss on the cheek. "Could you go and pack for me while I'm out?"
"Yes, dear." Amethyst said before he left.
Once he was gone, she buried her face in her hands. "He's just going to work… he's just going to work," she said to herself. Trying to get this nagging feeling to stop. Trying to think positively on their anniversary.
However, this heavy feeling was weighing down on her shoulders. “Should I go and double check…?” Amethyst muttered, contemplating if she should check to see if his boss really called him in. She wants to give him the benefit of the doubt but she doesn’t know if she could.
A couple of hours go by and Duke hasn’t come back. An hour went by and he still was a no show.
Amethyst, by that time, had finished packing her two suitcases for the three weeks they’ll be gone, hers and her husband’s were on the bed. Having to change to a cute dark blue long sleeve dress, the dress was short so it was six inches above her knees, showing off her long legs, having her hair and makeup done just to look good for her husband when he gets home…
After getting her clothes together, she twists her wedding bands before grabbing her phone and calling her husband.
After a couple of long rings, he picked up. “Hey honey, I was about to call you.” he said with a huff.
“Hey what a coincidence,” Amethyst muttered, having the phone on speaker so she could hear him more as she was now starting with his stuff. “How was work?”
“Work was good, I just left a few minutes ago and I’m going to pick up a few things then I’ll be on my way home.” He said. “What are you up to?”
“Getting your clothes together, I just finished packing mine.”
“Okay, I’ll be there soon.”
“Okay, you too.” Amethyst said and before she could tell him that she loves him, he hung her up again.
Sighing heavily, deciding to take a break, Amethyst walked downstairs, walking over to the kitchen and went over to the wine rack. She grabbed a bottle of red wine and a glass and poured her some.
Taking a long drink, she hears her phone pinged. She went to check and saw that it was a text message from a friend of hers. A friend named Windy Wilds, a mutual friend between her and Duke.
Hey Amethyst, U there?
Amethyst took another sip with the glass in one hand and she texted back with her free hand. Yeah, I’m here, what’s up?
I was taking my daughter out for ice cream….Look who I see across the street. Amethyst spat and choked on her wine. She was sent a photograph, it was of Duke and this red and white spotted mare with curly blonde mane and tail wearing this tight black mini dress.
And the two were kissing!
“Who the fuck is this bitch?!” Amethyst shouts in anger at the picture, gripping at the phone before texting her friend.
WTF!? Who the hell is she?!
I don’t know, but he’s real friendly with her. I’m sorry Amethyst, thought you should know.
Thank you…
She drops the phone on the counter, laying the palm of her hands on the counter top. Seeing that photo started to make things a little clearer: Him suddenly working late, coming home at the dead of night, his so called “business trips”? The way he acted during breakfast, especially when mentioning Las Pegasus.
They weren’t even meant for her! But him and his mistress!
Snarling, Amethyst grabs the bottle of wine and throws it at the wall with a wail. It shattered on contact and wine was dripping down the wall. She stormed from the kitchen and raced up stairs to the bedroom.
“He wants me to pack his clothes, I’ll pack his fucking clothes alright!” She growls as she goes to the closet and pulls all his suits that were hung on the racks off and slams them in his suitcase, tears streaking down her face as she takes each item of clothing and stuffed the case to the very brim.
She hunts down every pair of pants, underwear, shirts, every article of clothing she could find, puts them in the bag, she stomps back downstairs momentarily, goes back to the kitchen and to the fridge.
She takes out not just leftovers from dinner last night, she grabs every leftover she had cooked and made for the past week and carries them all back upstairs, back into the bedroom.
Amethyst then proceeds to dump everything all over his clothes, smearing every clothing item with the food.
Yelling out every nasty insult she could think of as she defiled Duke’s clothes. She then closed the suitcases and carted his belongings down the steps.
BANG BANG BANG BANG! Something pounded at her front door repeatedly
Amethyst jumped when she was halfway down the stairs. She could just barely see through the stained glass window that there was a large frame standing in front of her door.
She slowly set the suitcases down on the steps, wiping her hands clean on the cases before making her way down the rest of the stairs. As she got closer, the creature on the other side pounded the door again a little harder this way around.
“Who the hell is this asshole?” Amethyst muttered. “I’m coming, I’m coming!” She responded frustrated. She was not in the mood to deal with anyone and really not in the mood to deal with this impatient asshat!
She gets to the door, unlocks it and opens it up to see who was pounding at her door.
Standing outside on her porch, was a tall orange male pegasus that stopped midswing to pound the door again.
The two locked eyes as they both recognized each other…
They briefly met yesterday.
“You?!” Both of them pointed at each other.
Happy Anniversary!...Or Not
Both Amethyst and this pissed off stallion stared off at each other, both in disbelief to see each other again after what happened yesterday.
“Uh hi.” Amethyst said.
The pegasus stared down at her, rubbed his muzzle with his hands before he spoke. “Ma’am I am so sorry, you’re not who I was looking for.
“Oh, who were you looking for exactly? And how did you find my house?” Amethyst asked, not really knowing how to react to this guy here. Though it was a literal accident, she got fired because of him!
He quickly dug into his pants before pulling out his phone. “I’m sorry, I’m actually here looking for somepony else. Gimme a sec.” he muttered before pulling up a picture. “I’m looking for this son of a bitch, have you seen him?”
He holds up his phone with a selfie photograph of Duke posing in one of his nicer going out suits! She didn’t know how long ago that photo was but it wasn’t for her, she could guarantee he never sent it to her!
Amethyst glares at the picture of her husband on this stallion’s phone. “Gimme one moment.” she said, closing the door. She calmly walks back into the kitchen, retrieves her phone from the counter. She pressed the power button on and the photo of her husband and his mistress was still the first thing she saw.
Grunting, she takes the phone and walks back to the door and opens it up. The stallion was still there, still looking like he was about to knock some pony’s head off.
And in a way, it was kinda hot.
She shows him the phone. “You know this mare?” she asked with venom laced in her voice.
The pegasus’s nostrils flared and his wings did too. “That’s my wife!”
“With my husband, Celestia fucking damnit!” Amethyst groans loudly.
Both of them backed up and gripped their heads in frustration.
Great, just fucking great! She got the mistress’s husband here! Great, just fucking perfect!
The pegasus looked like he was trying to control himself but Amethyst could see this boiling rage coming from him and that was understandable.
He gripped his mane before taking deep, long breaths. “Sorry, I’m sorry, its just…fucking hell. Sorry Amethyst.”
Amethyst looks up at him when he calls her by her first name. “Okay, how do you know my name?”
He looks down at her. “It was on your nametag yesterday and it's what that asshole of your boss who fired you called you.” he sighed deeply.
Amethyst blinked, recalling that nasty chewing out she got from her boss. “Okay… what’s your name?”
“Larkin.” He responded.
She nodded. “Huh, okay Larkin,” she opens the door wide and steps aside. “Why don’t you come in, it’s clear that you and I need to discuss a few things.” she said, her fingers tapping on the door itself.
The pegasus considered a moment, he much rather go hunt down this bastard. But that was then the mare said.
“Honey, as much as you want to beat up my piece of shit husband - and yes I can tell you want to do it cause I want to do it too, it takes two to tango and your wife is all over him.” Amethyst said. “Now unless we both agree to beat up each other’s shitty spouses, why don’t you come inside?”
