Chapter 1:

The white unicorn simply shook his head as he noticed the pegasus’s lack of response.

“Well, I can’t say I didn’t expect this to happen. Come on Midnight, do you remember who I am?” The white unicorn asked. As his mind slowly rebooted, the young pegasus’s eyes widened as he realized who was talking to him.

“It’s fine Midnight. We both knew that you’d be like this for a week after drinking all that ale. And besides, you’re a knight just like me, so ditch the ‘sir’ mind you? “Well, I’m no knight, at least not to them.”

The blue pegasus muttered as he remembered how Shining had invited him to a knight’s gathering, yet when Midnight arrived the others refused to let him in on the pretense that he was not a ‘True Knight’ yet. Determined to prove them wrong, the blue pegasus had demanded from them what accomplishments would convince them to change their minds. After being given the list, Midnight had managed to complete one so far, though the week-long pain had been so intense that he nearly wondered if it was worth it.

“Well, you’re always a true knight to me Midnight. Those old bucketheads just don’t want to accept you because they know you’ve done so much in such a short time. And given your progress, I wouldn’t be surprised if you accomplish the other two by the end of the month.” The white stallion stated with a proud smile.

“Speaking of which, what were the other two items I have to do? I barely remember anything at this point.” Midnight asked as he looked at his mentor.

You know you have to, but I get why you’re so hesitant. Either way, your priority should be defeating a dragon. Pack your things, I’m taking you to a swordsmith.” The white stallion said as he left.

Later that day the pair of knights found themselves in front of a small house. Thick columns of smoke shot from the chimney and the two felt an immense heat coming from inside. Soon enough a tall stallion came from the structure, his mane disheveled and his body covered in so much soot that it was impossible to tell what color he was. Noticing the pair he smiled as he walked toward them.

“The name’s Sharpening Station, nice to meet you two! Unfortunately, I'm currently out of material that’s good for a dragon so I could only make this for the young lad.” The stallion apologized before handing over a small sword to Midnight if you could even call it one. The blue pegasus blinked at the dagger-sized blade.

“Erm… I don’t think this will-”

“Nonsense! This will work! It doesn’t matter the size, shape, or length, all that matters is the technique!” The stallion interrupted, causing Midnight to deadpan.

“It’s... but… fine, I’ll give it a shot. Wouldn’t be the first time I was forced to use a dagger, I just doubt it’d work against a 50ft dragon though.” The knight stated as he stored his newly acquired weapon. He would’ve gone with his rapier if it weren’t for the fact it would’ve melted from a dragon's breath.

“Luckily for you Midnight, the nearest dragon is one of more younger adults, not one of the mountain ones that exist. Unfortunately, it's quite ferocious and very intelligent. It will be a tough fight, but I know that you’ll come out on top in the end.” Shining said as he patted the blue pegasus’s back.

“Thanks, I’ll need it.” Midnight responded, putting on a soft smile.

After sorting his things and taking off to the skies, the blue pegasus began his journey, noticing how the air slowly became warmer and the ground lose its color. Now in a small volcanic area, the young knight began to descend, landing on the ground with a silent 'thud'. Taking out his dagger, Midnight began to walk through the rough terrain, sweat dripping from his brow from both the heat and his nervousness.

The young knight suddenly paused as he heard a splash in the distance. Staying still he trained his ear to figure out where the disturbance came from when he heard the sound again. With a general direction now in his head, he slowly sneaked towards the source, using the rocks around him as cover. More sweat began to form on his body, the temperature increasing as he heard the sound of lava bubbling nearby. A 'click' came from his armor before a soft red glow covered him as the runes on his armor turned on, protecting him from the heat and cooling his body. Still, the stallion decided to take cover behind a large boulder and uncork a potion. He drank the black liquid, wincing at the rough taste it had before placing it on the ground.

"Just in case I somehow get thrown into the lava." The stallion thought to himself. While the enchantments would protect him from a direct dragon's breath and even from lava, that would only last for a few seconds before the runes would turn off from continuous use. By drinking the potion Midnight ensured his survival in case that ever occurred. After taking a deep breath the blue stallion poked his head from his hiding spot only to widen his eyes upon registering what he was seeing.

The cyan dragon soon got up from where she landed, a mix of anger and excitement forming on her face as she looked at the stallion.

The dragon quickly got back into action, her wings propelling her at high speeds towards the blue pegasus. "You know you would've been more of a threat if your sword wasn't so tiny." The cyan creature yelled before a smirk formed on her face as she prepared to taunt him. "Or are you so weak of a knight that you couldn't even carry a normal one? Heh, you're no true knight then."

Midnight's pupils contracted with rage upon hearing this. With a feral growl that surprised the dragon, the blue pegasus jumped backward, his large wings flaring into the air as magic began to concentrate around them.

"I'm going to make you eat those words!" The blue pegasus roared before sparks began to flicker in his wings. In an instant his entire body was soon covered in electricity, his fur standing up due to the high voltage emitting from his body. The cyan dragon meanwhile looked in shock.

"Wait I never heard a pegasus use magic like tha-ACK!"

The dragon was quickly cut off though as the now electrified pegasus punched her across the face, sending her flying into the air. Even though she had been a hot view to look at, he was now focused on proving her wrong and soon blasted off towards her.

"It's called Lightning Magic." The blue Pegasus said with a calm rage before sending her crashing towards the ground.

The young dragoness hissed in pain as she slowly got up. While she was annoyed that he was dealing damage to her, she was at the same time impressed by that fact. Most of the dragons that she faced were dumb enough to be easily defeated, and the knights that she had to endure from time to time were too ensnared by her curves to fight effectively. That's just sad." Ember said as she tapped the ground with her feet, making sure she could use 'that' plan. She wasn’t exactly very happy about using it but she did warn him that she wasn’t going to hold back. The blue pegasus simply gritted his teeth, his magic spiking in power as he glared at her.

"We'll be seeing what you'll be saying next once I do this!" Midnight yelled before blasting off at her at high speeds, colliding with her. He narrowed his eyes as she was able to hold her ground against him, though a snarl formed on her face as she felt the full force of his electric magic. The two ended up locking each other's hands as they tried to push each other away, causing Ember to be quite impressed with how well the pony kept up with her.

"He's an interesting stallion, unfortunately, it's time to end this," Ember said before smashing her legs into the ground. Immediately the floor gave way, making Midnight yelp as both of them ended up diving into the lava below. The dragoness quickly took advantage of the situation, pinning him against her. “Wait, you’re alive!? How!?” Ember yelled, causing the stallion to freeze before slowly turning around. He winced as he realized that she was there and a nervous look soon formed on his face.

“Uhm, yeah? Ever heard of an obsidian skin potion?” Midnight replied with a hint of fear before continuing. “I thought you left though!”

“I was going to.” The cyan dragon stated as she walked towards the stallion. She frowned when the stallion pulled out his dagger from the lava, but soon raised her eyebrow as she noticed how hot the metal glowed. “You know that won’t do much against me right?”

The dragon smirked as the stallion began to panic upon seeing his only weapon no longer usable. The dragoness tried to approach him but upon seeing the stallion pointing the blade at her she decided enough was enough. She ripped it from his hand, causing the stallion to yelp as he truly had nothing left to defend himself anymore.

“Relax, I’m not going to do anything to you, at least not for the moment,” Ember stated as she examined the weapon. “Hmph. I don’t know who your blacksmith was but they did a pretty lousy job. The metal they used is barely enough to survive lava. To his credit most dragon’s breaths aren’t as hot, unfortunately, I’m not like most dragons.”

With that the cyan dragon took a deep breath before releasing a hot wave of blue flame onto the dagger, causing the blade to lose shape before eventually becoming nothing but a puddle of liquid metal. Midnight simply looked at her with a shocked expression before letting out a heavy sigh.

“I guess they were right that I was no true knight.” The blue pegasus dejectedly said as he sunk a bit into the lava, the molten rock not harming him thanks to his potion. The cyan dragon looked at his saddened expression for a moment before walking toward him and giving him a stare.

“Hey! Stop that face immediately Midnight! You’ve lasted far longer than any dragon or knight before you, and apart from that, you’re still alive thanks to your own preparation. The cyan dragon looked intently at Midnight, and slowly but surely a smile formed on the pegasus’s face as he realized that she was serious with what she was saying. He let out a light laugh before looking at her.

“Thank you. I feel much better now…”

“Ember.”

“Hm? What’s wrong Midnight?” The cyan dragoness asked as she noticed him dipping back into the lava as if he was hiding something.

“I just realized that all of my clothes have melted off.” The blue pegasus quickly replied as he further lowered himself into the lava. The dragon took only a few moments to realize what the stallion meant before an evil smirk formed on her face.
