Twilight Oblivion

It is said that alicorns are the pinnacle of ponykind, a mix of the three pony tribes that are greater than the sum of their parts. It is said that they are eternal symbols of near-perfection that are destined to lead ponykind in peace and harmony.

What is said is wrong, there are more than three kinds of pony, and there are things far older than the heralds of sun and moon. A city does not an empire make, but a city is among the last burning embers of something greater, and when the fire of the Sun dares to steal that ember the others will unleash an inferno that will consume all.

The North has always hated outsiders.

The princesses of Equestria had no idea that their effort to turn the Crystal Empire into a vassal state would awaken something old, and now Twilight Sparkle, Element of Magic and prized pupil of Princess Celestia, must race against the clock in order to save everything she has ever known. In the ashes of a war long forgotten she must face a Contender from an age of hate and the magically charged fury of nature itself; both the desperate attempts for the salvation of a dead empire.
